ACTIVITIES The community of Bloomington-Normal offers additional opportunities for athletic and recreational activities. The Pepsi Ice Center, located adjacent to the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in downtown Bloomington, offers ice time for hockey and skating year-round. Located minutes away from the University is Upper Limits Rock Gym and Pro Shop, which is among the largest climbing gyms in North America. The facility features more than 20,000 square feet of climbing surface, a 110-foot outdoor wall, and even ice climbing on an artificial frozen waterfall during the winter months. Illinois Wesleyan offers a coeducational intramural sports program in which all members of the campus community are encouraged to participate. Students, faculty and staff compete in 12 different athletic events. Competition includes badminton, basketball, flag football, floor hockey, racquetball, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and wallyball. In addition, the University’s club sports program includes floor hockey, racquetball, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, badminton, cheerleading and dance.
Discovery Channel International, offers opportunities for climbers of all experience levels. Another popular attraction is the Constitution Trail, which features more than 24 miles of paved trail through both forested and commercial areas of the Twin Cities. The trail attracts runners, cyclists and in-line skaters and is accessible just a few blocks from the Shirk Athletic Center. Furthermore, IWU Student Wellness offers a variety of fitnessoriented classes throughout the school year. These classes are designed to promote cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and muscular flexibility, as well as to encourage healthy lifestyle choices among students. Other opportunities through the Wellness Program include workshops, massage therapy, health screenings and special campus events.
