The Buzz

No dozing off at Oak Meadows

The bulldozer to the right was not just a prop at Oak Meadows Golf Course on July 7. It took action, gouging into the course’s 10th tee after a celebratory final day of play for the DuPage County Forest Preserve-run layout that dates to 1923. On July 8, that dozer had company. The Greg Martin-led renovation was underway. Quickly, greens were being dug up, trees were coming down, and the long-necessary fixes to stop the course from flooding – plus help out the neighborhood – had started to be addressed. Oak Meadows, originally Elmhurst Country Club, will reopen in 2017. LADIES NEXT FOR OLYMPIA FIELDS?: The word on the street is that once this month’s U.S. Amateur has played through Olympia Fields Country Club, the big south suburban outpost will turn its attention toward getting another big championship. Not the U.S. Women’s Open, though that would be a fine catch. The whispers are that Olympia and the PGA of America and LPGA are close to a deal to bring the Women’s PGA Championship to Olympia before the decade is out. The WPGA was known as the LPGA Championship until this year, when the PGA of America joined forces with the LPGA to upgrade. If the deal is made, it would probably be for 2018 or 2019. The International Crown, a creation of Jerry Rich, will be held at his Rich Harvest Farms course

next year, and probably again in 2020. The last women’s major in the Chicago area was the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open, at the Merit Club in Libertyville. The LPGA / WPGA has never been here. FINALLY: It’s amazing how the John Deere Classic always gets the short end when the PGA Tour has to adjust its schedule. As if playing immediately before the British Open isn’t enough – which the JDC has turned into a plus with a chartered jet – now the 2016 Olympics come along and the Deere is played directly against the Rio carnival. Just how does creative tournament director Clair Peterson turn the defending champion Jordan Spieth’s absence into a plus?

Unexpected breaths of fresh air

ynics will tell you there’s no good news in the golf business, that fewer people are playing than ever, that course closures will accelerate before the industry stabilizes, and so yawn. There is good news. It arrives from various points as breaths of fresh air in an oft-stale world. Start with the recent playing of the Illinois Women’s Open. Tournament founder Phil Kosin, who was always in search of a good story, would have been thrilled to have been at Mistwood to see the emergence of a champion who is six years younger than the soiree he set in motion 21 years ago. Madasyn Pettersen’s five-stroke victory featuring five closing birdies at the tender age of 15 was as astonishing as anything in the lively history of the tournament, a resume that includes a 10-hole sudden-death playoff. Kosin would also have loved that Pettersen is as good a quote as she is a player, and if some of that is courtesy the precociousness of youth, it can be imagined that as she rolls though high school and into college – coaches should be lining up at her door the first day they’re allowed to – her imagination on the golf course will surely carry over to her thoughts. A week earlier, David Cooke of Lisle reminded all that golf can be an outlet as well as a sport. To lose your brother during a pick-up basketball game – during the holidays, no less – is something that can’t be erased from the psyche.

Tim Cronin / Illinois Golfer

Throwback David Esler’s redesign at Mount Prospect brings classic golf design to the public in an unexpected arena.

But Cooke was able to channel fond memories of Chad en route to winning the Illinois Open, then find a catch in his throat and a tear in his eye during the awards presentation. Cooke, like Pettersen, is an amateur, and scored a five-stroke victory. A comparative geezer, he’s in college, but now has a memory of success that can perhaps temper the sorrow. And the rest of us realize that the next snowman made on a pushover hole isn’t the worst thing ever. Finally, there is the surprise package unveiled by architect David Esler and the members of the Mount Prospect Park District at their Mount Prospect Golf Course. Esler has always had an eye for both the natural and the fanciful in golf, but few knew that he had also harbored a desire to bring the century-old templates of

Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor to the general public. Most golfers can’t get on Chicago Golf or Shoreacres, the two private courses in this area with Macdonald and Raynor stylings. Likewise, good luck getting on the National Golf Links of America or Fishers Island on (and in) Long Island, or Carmago in Cincinnati or Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda. But Mount Prospect is a municipal course, open to all, and now this perennially popular muni is unique among public courses. Players can test their nerve hitting to a Redan, or putting on an Eden, or even playing a version of the Road Hole on the 17th. That’s more than a breath of fresh air. That’s a whirlwind.

One of a kind Jordan Spieth annexed his second John Deere Classic title in three years, once again in a playoff, this time against Tom Gillis.

Spieth, surely, so inevitably By Tim Cronin

Reporting from Silvis

β€œMagic happens here,” goes the two-year-old slogan for the John Deere Classic. It was coined after Jordan Spieth’s par save from the greenside bunker on the 18th hole cata-

pulted him into the playoff he won in 2013. That sent the then-19-year-old’s career into golf’s stratosphere. Two years on, Spieth arrived at TPC Deere Run as the reigning Masters and U.S. Open champion, the No. 2 player in the world, and the favorite to win the British Open at St. Andrews.

(As any Zach Johnson fan will tell you, Spieth finished a stroke out of the playoff on the Old Course.) Critics said he should already have been touring the Old Course, where he played in 2011, to soak up its nuances. Spieth proved the critics wrong. He knows his game and knows how

Page 7 β€’ August 2015 β€’ Illinois Golfer www.illinoisgolfer.net –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

to prepare for every eventuality. He came to the Deere, flirted with the cut line for 22 holes, then got down to business. The Deere’s final round was proof. After surrendering the lead and then roaring back from a four-stroke deficit came the fruits of his labor, a second Deere title in three years. Once again, it came in a playoff. This time, it was against one man, journeyman Tom Gillis, and it lasted two holes. When Gillis, who turned 47 the following Thursday, sent his approach on the par-4 18th into the water from a sketchy lie in the right rough, all Spieth had to do was find the green with his approach and two putt for par. Mission accomplished. Magic accomplished as well. Spieth, who turned 22 on July 23, is the first player since 1990 to have four victories in a year before the British Open. Tiger Woods accomplished that what now seems like an eternity ago. Spieth remains the nicest kid on the block that is big-time golf. Even Gillis, trumped in his best chance for a victory since finishing second, along with Woods, to Rory McIlroy in the 2012 Honda Classic, thought so, especially after Spieth started talking to him as they walked to the tee for the second hole of the playoff. β€œHe said, β€˜This is fun, isn’t it?’ And I said, β€˜This is what you strive for.’ And that’s the point where I say he’s a good person,” Gillis said. β€œHe didn’t have to say anything. He’s grounded and he had perspective that he’s enjoying it, and I think that’s really important. β€œI don’t want to say I’m in awe, but this kid’s the future of the game.” Gillis was pleased to be competitive after a four-month layoff for shoulder surgery and struggling to make cuts. He came into the week 643rd

Notable notes from the John Deere Classic, a.k.a. the Jordan Spieth Benefit Classic β€’ Next year’s dates, Aug. 11-14, coincide with the Olympic men’s tournament in Rio. Jordan Spieth will probably be playing for a gold medal rather than defend his title. β€œ(W)e can think of no better representative of our country in terms of championship performance and great sportsmanship than Jordan Spieth,” said tournament director Clair Peterson, who expects a good field given the Olympic field limit. β€’ With 47 Sunday rounds under 70 and 60 of the 73 players breaking par, the average of 68.767 strokes was the lowest for Round 4 since at least 2003. The overall average of 69.648 was the lowest since 2013. There were 1,990 birdies over five in the world and 199th on the money list, and left with a berth in the British Open and a spot on the Deere-provided nonstop charter to Scotland. β€œThere’s still tread on the tires,” Gillis said. β€œYou start to get to the point where you wonder how much more is there. The window is closing, so anytime you get into a playoff or you could have avoided a playoff, you think about it.” There was enough for him to fire a 7-underpar 64 in the heat of Sunday – both the atmospheric sauna and the pressure – while Spieth was struggling for the longest time en route to a 68. He was four strokes back after Gillis, who went out in 5-under 30, birdied the 12th hole and Spieth bogeyed the 11th. At that point, Spieth was tied for fourth, with Johnson Wagner and Zach

days for the Birdies for Charity donors to write checks against. β€’ Peterson doesn’t give out attendance figures for some reason, but said that compared to 2014, revenue from tickets, concessions and parking was up 200 percent on Wednesday (when Bill Murray graced the pro-am), up 35 percent on Thursday and up 36 percent on Friday. He said they were about 30 cars from filling the main spectator parking lot at Quad City Downs on Thursday. β€œThat’s never happened,” Peterson said. β€’ Spieth fired the shot of the tournament on the 17th hole on Saturday, holing out for eagle from 105 yards out with a pitching wedge. Johnson between him and Gillis, and holes were running out. Or were they? β€œAll we were saying is, we birdied five out of the last six two years ago to get into a playoff, so why can’t we do it again,” Spieth said of his conversation with caddie Michael Greller. So he birdied the par-4 13th from 23 feet, the par-4 14th from five feet, the par-3 16th by chipping in from 21 feet, and the par-5 17th from 3 1/2 feet. The shock waves – not as loud as the M-80 that went off courtesy of a lout on a boat on the Rock River that caused Zach Johnson to jump two feet in the air, but close – reverberated around Deere Run. Magic, you know.

66th Illinois Open

Cooke wins for himself and late brother Tenth amateur to win state championship By Tim Cronin

Reporting from Long Grove

–––––

The numbers were astounding. An aggregate score of 199, 16 under par for 54 holes. A total of 128 for the final 36 holes. All were records, all set by 22-year-old David Cooke, who won the Illinois Open by five strokes on Wednesday, July 22, at Royal Melbourne Country Club. That matched the largest margin of victory by an amateur, equaling Gary Hallberg’s success in 1977. But there was someone missing on Wednesday, as there has been since Dec. 23, when Chad Cooke, David’s younger brother, died while he and David were playing a game of pick-up basketball in the western suburbs. A heart disorder was the cause. β€œIt’s been an emotional few months,” Cooke said at the trophy ceremony. With older brother Jay on his bag and his parents tagging along for the round, Cooke made Chad proud with a finalround 9-under-par 63. β€œChaddie the caddie, my dad said when I don’t have a caddie in my college events,” Cooke said. β€œIt’s been really difficult. We’ve been helping each other out. But he was a strong encourager of everybody, and so I knew if it was up to

him he’d definitely want me playing. I tried to focus on that, think about the positives. β€œWe had a lot of great memories, me and my little brother, and I wish more than anything I could have him back.” Cooke, a Lisle resident who entering his senior year at North Carolina State, beat Web.com pro Vince India (11-under 204), who collected the $12,500 first prize, by five strokes and Bloomington’s Matt Miller (10-under 205) by six. Rich Dukelow of Evergreen Park would have finished tied for fourth at 5-under 210 after his final round 71, but signed for an incorrect scorecard and was disqualified. The miscue of signing for a 4 on the last hole when he scored 5 cost him $5,166.67. Instead, he got nothing. Eric Meierdierks and Gary March, also at 210, earned $5,750 each. Dukelow discovered the mistake and told the Illinois PGA’s scoring department. β€œYou can’t be a cheat,” Dukelow said between puffs on a cigarette. The only snag in Cooke’s round came on the 17th hole, where he airmailed his approach over the green and into the junk below and behind the green. After his drop, he knocked a couple of leaves off a branch taking a practice swing, but was ruled not to have violated a rule against improving his swing because the practice swing was well away from the ball. β€œI talked to Trey (Van Dyke, a rules official), he was the one who helped me drop, and he said it was OK as long as it wasn’t on the intended

Low pro Vince India was runner-up, but scored the first prize of $12,500 while trailing amateur Cooke.

path,” Cooke said. β€œAnd it was only a couple, three leaves.” Cooke, who bogeyed the 17th, would have won regardless of a penalty, so solid was his game. He opened with an eagle and two birdies, then birdied the fifth and eighth holes to go out in 6-under 30. He built a four-stroke lead over India at the turn and could coast from there. β€œThere were some nerves on the first tee, and

I was just trying to get off to a good start,” Cooke said. β€œI was trying to take advantage of the first hole since it was changed to a par 5. I had a good yardage and figured I could go straight at it.” He did, drilling a 144-yard pitching wedge to six feet and dropping the putt for an eagle. That broke the overnight tie with Brad Marek, who birdied. Cooke didn’t stop there. Really, he didn’t stop until he was in the clubhouse, scattering nine birdies in all, including a curling six-footer at the last for the 63, a stroke off the course record. β€œIt was definitely nerve-racking, the first time with an overnight lead in a professional event,” Cooke said. Cooke was not only the winner and low amateur, he was the low amateur by 13 strokes, that far ahead of Lincolnshire’s Jack Watson. India, able to play because the PGA Tour’s stepping-stone circuit had the week off, played with Cooke and knew he’d have to go lower than the 67 he posted. β€œI’d have had to shoot 11-under (61) to win,” India said. β€œI didn’t get in trouble all day and shot 5-under.” His goal is the PGA Tour, but at 26 he still wants to win a state title. β€œThis one has eluded me,” India said. Amateur Matt Weber, out in the final day’s third group, fired a 10-under 62 to match the Illinois Open and course record set by David Lawrence on Monday, when the course was set up as a par 71. For Weber, a Hinsdale resident who will be a sophomore at Indiana, the day was a dream round. He birdied six of the first seven holes, turned in 7-under 29, and ended up with birdies on 11 of the first 15. Yes, 59, golf’s magic number, entered his mind.

Tim Cronin / Illinois Golfer

So close Amateur Matt Weber was six inches from a 61, and could have gone lower.

β€œI was trying to just not worry about it too much,” Weber said. His last birdie, on the par-5 15th, came about when he rolled in a putt from five yards off the green. But a lip-out on the par-5 17th and a closing bogey when he missed a curling six footer for an up-and-down forced him to settle for a 62 and an eventual tie for 13th. For his part, Lawrence rebounded from Tues-

Page 10 β€’ August 2015 www.illinoisgolfer.net –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– day’s 80 at Hawthorn Woods, where everyone played one round, with a 2-under 70 to finished tied for 9th at 2-under 213. Lawrence’s 62 demolished both the Illinois Open and course records. Lawrence, a 25-year-old from Moline, was four strokes ahead of India, Glen Ellyn’s Matt Slowinski and Northbrook amateur Nick Hardy. Their 66s looked positively bloated in comparison. The Eastern Illinois graduate, mostly living off mini-tour income while he counts the days toward the next PGA Tour qualifying tournament, grinds out rounds on Florida’s Moonlight Tour and in picture postcard outposts as Vermillion, South Dakota. He’d managed a 29 over the winter, a suggestion that the mental coaching from Darin Hoff is paying off. The 62 on the 6,701-yard Greg Norman-designed layout was proof. β€œI’ve always had a hard time keeping the momentum going,” Lawrence said. β€œHe’s taught me to reset during a round.” He punched the reset button often, the first time soon after his birdie on the par-3 10th, his first hole. β€œIt’s good to put a two on your card early,” Lawrence said of his 8foot uphill putt. Lawrence splashed 10 birdies across his card, sullied by only one bogey on the par-4 12th hole.

Tim Cronin / Illinois Golfer

Quick

start David Lawrence opened with a record-breaking 62. β€œI had two lip-outs and a couple of putts that could have fallen,” Lawrence said. He birdied his first two holes, then the 14th through 18th to make the turn in 6-under 30, and added three more birds in the middle of the front nine. No birdie putt was longer than 15 feet. Lawrence’s marvelous score erased the Illinois Open record of 64 set by Dusti Watson at Royal Fox Country Club in 1994 and matched by Scott Moore at the Glen Club in 2003. It also knocked off, by four strokes, the Royal Melbourne mark of 66.

21st Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open

Prodigy Pettersen finds her range

15-year-old birdies last 5 to capture state crown By Tim Cronin

Reporting from Romeoville

A new rangefinder was 15-year-old Madasyn Pettersen’s goal. β€œI came here to be the low amateur,” Pettersen said after raising the Kosin Cup – not for low amateur in the 21st Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open, but for the whole deal – after fired a career low 6under-par 66 with nine birdies to finish at 8-underpar 208 and score a five-stroke victory at Mistwood Golf Club. Grabbing the low am title – which she did on Wednesday, July 29 – means a gift certificate worth $750 in the Mistwood pro shop that would more than take care of the rangefinder’s cost. Belying her youth, she played like a veteran, withstanding the early charge of fellow competitor Chelsea Harris, who birdied four of the first five holes to move to 6-under and gain a three-stroke lead on Pettersen. The kid’s answer? Three birdies in four holes. And when Harris bogeyed the seventh and eighth, Pettersen was back in the lead. There she stayed. While amateur Brooke Ferrell was going around Mistwood’s testing back nine in 4-under 32 to post a 2-under 70 and finish at 3under 213, and Harris’ 71 brought her in at a like

To wit: β€’ Birdie at the treacherous par-3 14th, playe over the water with a wind-in-the-face 5-iron to 15 feet. β€’ Birdie at the par-5 15th after a second shot that finished pin high to the left of the green. β€’ Birdie at the par-4 16th after an approach to 15 feet. β€’ Birdie at the par-3 17th after a tee shot to 12 feet. β€’ Birdie at the par-5 18th after a second shot that bounced to the fringe behind the green and a nifty chip to five feet. β€œI won!” she mouthed to her family, including 9-year-old Bella, her little sister and loyal caddie, after the final putt fell. She not only won, she dominated. Records are sketchy, but Pettersen, who will be a junior at Rockford’s Auburn High School this fall, is certainly the youngest winner of the IWO, and no other player, much less champion, has birdied the final five holes of any round, much less to win going away. Pettersen’s finish left Harris, an assistant women’s team coach at Illinois State, breathless. β€œShe played lights out,” said Harris, who had opened with a 70 and added a second-round 72 for a share of the 36-hole lead with Pettersen and 2014 Illinois grad Ember Schuldt of Sterling. β€œI got outplayed today. I had it early and lost it.” They were the last twosome and finished in under four hours, but some considered them slow because the pentultimate group was two holes ahead at one point. That margin was a little more than a hole at the end, but it may have bugged Harris that Pettersen surveyed many a putt from many an angle. β€œI prefer to play a little faster,” Harris said.

Tim Cronin / Illinois Golfer

Denied Chelsea Harris of Bloomington anguishes after missing a birdie putt on the par-5 15th in the final round.

On the other hand, Pettersen was making everything she looked at by the end, and nothing saves time more than sinking a long putt. β€œThis spring I said to myself, β€˜I want to putt like Jordan Spieth,’ ” Pettersen said. A grip change and several hours of practice later, she was sinking long putts with great regularity. β€œNine birdies today, I think that’s pretty darn good,” Pettersen said. Ember Schuldt of Sterling took fourth and was the only other player under par, her even-par 72 leaving her at 2-under 214. Naperville’s Bing Singhsumalee was fifth at 1-over 217 after a clos-

ing 72. Harris’ second round was steady, with one birdie and one bogey. β€œIt was tempo again,” Harris said. β€œI have a tendency to get quick in everything I do, so I work on my tempo. But I don’t think of anything over the ball. It’s β€˜crickets.’ ” And, perhaps, a groan on her lipped-out birdie opportunities on the last three holes. Schuldt’s Tuesday card was more involved, with five birdies, including one at the last, along with a pair of bogeys and an untidy 5 on the par-3 ninth. She at least made money, which had only been the

Page 13 β€’ August 2015 β€’ Illinois Golfer www.illinoisgolfer.net ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– case twice in 10 adventures on this season’s Symetra Tour, the stepping-stone to the LPGA. Then there was Pettersen, who struggled to a 2over 38 on the front in the second round, but birdied two holes on the back to offset a double-bogey 6 on the par-4 13th. The last of her birdies was on the par-5 18th, created by a 290-yard drive, a pin-high 6-iron, and a near chip-in to about 5 inches. The rest of her day? Not so great, she inferred. β€œThere were not a lot of greens hit, not a lot of fairways,” Pettersen said. β€œAs a scrambler, I had a lot of practice.” Brooke Ferrell backed up her opening 71 with an even-par 72, highlighted by three straight birdies on Nos. 14, 15 and 16. She pocketed six birdies, six pars and six bogeys. But unlike the first round, there was no aces. She’d put a 1 on her card after a 166-yard 7-iron found the bottom of the cup in the seventh hole on Monday. β€œI actually wasn’t very happy with the shot,” Ferrell said of her first impression of her hole-inone. β€œIt was a chunk-and-run.” While merely 15, Pettersen has been playing golf for 11 years, though the previous two summers were tough because of shoulder surgery in 2013 and a stomach ailment last year. When she opened with 4-under-par 68 to pace the field, she wasn’t surprised at all. β€œIt was just a normal day,” Pettersen said. For her, at least. The Rockford teen had fired a 68 in the middle round of the previous week’s AJGA Midwest Junior Players Championship at Mistwood, and eventually finished second to Singhsumalee. Pettersen led Harris and Jessica Yuen by two strokes, and Schuldt and Katy Jarochowicz by three, after 18 holes. Singhsumalee was tied for seventh after an even-par 72.

113th Western Amateur Preview

Tim Cronin / Illinois Golfer

One man’s vision The 18th green at Rich Harvest Farms, site of this year’s Western Amateur on the back yard playground of Jerry Rich.

The big battle in the big back yard By Tim Cronin –––––

Rich Harvest Links isn’t the typical outpost for the Western Amateur. It’s private, yes, as every course the championship has been played on has been since its inception in 1899. But most private clubs have hundreds of members, many of whom typically pitch in during tour-

nament week. Rich Harvest is the vision of one man, Jerry Rich, the Sugar Grove entrepreneur who decided that he wanted a golf course in his 5,000-acre back yard, and set about building one. It took more than a decade, but his layout, with professional architect Greg Martin eventually helping, grew from three to six to 11 to 18 holes. The course has received both bouquets and

brickbats from those with an interest in architecture. It’s not an easy course to walk thanks to some long journeys from green to the next tee, but it’s testing, and Rich’s connections have brought in everything from college tournaments – it’s the home course for his alma mater, Northern Illinois, with an indoor practice facility – to a junior tournament named after his old high school chum, Roger Ulseth, to the 2009 Solheim Cup, this year’s Palmer

Cup, next year’s International Crown and the 2017 NCAA Championship. In short, Rich Harvest is a happening place. And this month’s Western Amateur, the 113th in the string, is full of hot players. Start with defending champion Beau Hossler, the Californian – and Texas Longhorn – who won last year at Beverly Country Club, a spot as crowded by the city as Rich Harvest is uncrowded. Add in 2013 champion Jordan Niebrugge, back in the headlines a fortnight ago with his low amateur showing in the British Open at the Old Course in St. Andrews. Then throw in Nick Hardy, Charlie Danielson and Dylan Meyer, three stalwarts from the Illinois golf team, and that’s the start of a 156-player contingent rated higher than the 312-player field that assembled earlier this year for the British Amateur. β€œIt’s a challenging course,” Hossler said. β€œThe type of course when you get into trouble, it’s tough to get out of it.” For Rich, a longtime backer of the WGA and its Evans Scholars Foundation, the idea of hosting was natural. He’d hosted the Western Junior and will do so again, and with the expansion of the facility, including a second range, for the Solheim Cup, was able to invite the Western Amateur as well. He didn’t have to do any of that. He could have kept Rich Harvest to himself and his hand-picked membership, much as John D. Rockefeller did on his several private courses or Walter Annenberg did with Sunnylands, his nine-hole course in Palm Springs. Instead, he opens the doors. β€œI love junior golf and amateur golf,” Rich said. β€œWe invited the best juniors in our area because Roger Ulseth – he and I went to York High School together and were teammates, he was No. 1 and I

115th U.S. Amateur Preview

As major as they come

Tim Cronin / Illinois Golfer

Host of champions Olympia Fields’ massive clubhouse stands between the North and South courses, both to be used during stroke play qualifying.

By Tim Cronin –––––

It’s been 18 years since the United States Amateur, the oldest championship in the United States Golf Association’s quiver and the one which caused the group’s formation at the end of 1894, has been played in the Chicago area. That visit was to Cog Hill’s fearsome Dubsdread course in the summer of 1997. Matt Kuchar won, 51 weeks after Tiger Woods turned pro right after snagging his third straight U.S. Am title. Kuchar’s had a decent career, especially in

recent years. But professional success is not guaranteed a U.S. Am winner. Incredible careers such as Woods’ don’t come along even in each generation. Often, the winner fades into semi-obscurity. Remember Jeff Quinney, who triumphed in 2000? Or Nick Flanagan, who won in 2003? How about Kelly Kraft, whose success at Erin Hills four years ago was expected to lead to great things? It’s better, then, to look at the U.S. Amateur in much the same fashion as the Western Amateur, as a singular achievement that may portend future success – the run of Phil Mickelson, Justin Leon-

ard in back-to-back years, and then Woods in the Western Am was heralded as the dawn of a new era, and now clearly was just a really good run – but is best seen as a really good week. The survivor from the field of 312 as the winner of the 115th U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields Country Club will have had a really good week. He’ll have survived two rounds of stroke play qualifying, one on the South Course and one on the North Course, and six rounds of match play, a grind that will add up to eight rounds of golf in seven days. (That compares to the Western Am’s

Page 17 β€’ August 2015 β€’ Illinois Golfer www.illinoisgolfer.net ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– more grueling eight rounds in five days, with 36 holes the final three days for the two survivors.) Olympia Fields has hosted the U.S. Open twice, most recently in 2003, along with a U.S. Senior Open, two PGA Championships and five Western Opens, but never the U.S. Amateur. But Olympia, with the largest clubhouse this side of Morocco, can host anything. Superintendent Sam McKenzie has both courses in beautiful shape, with the North Course primed. Last year’s Amateur was a stunner. Nobody outside of his immediate family had heard of Gunn Yang, and maybe not even they gave him a chance. The South Korean had been dropped by his coach at San Diego State because of poor play. He’d been off form for much of 2014 after back surgery. He was ranked 776th among amateurs. He didn’t even bring a full week of clothes on his trip to the Atlanta Athletic Club. And he won, holding off Canadian Corey Conners 2 and 1 in the title match to get his hands on the Havemeyer Trophy. β€œI haven’t won a tournament for a long time, like maybe five or six years,” Yang said after winning. β€œObviously, it just popped in my head that if I beat Corey, then I win the trophy.” This year, Yang missed the cut in the three majors he was eligible for, but made the cut at Colonial and finished tied for 65th. Something like that can happen at Olympia Fields, to Yang or to someone else. Nobody expected Paul Dunne to be in the final group at the British Open at St. Andrews, but there he was. It earned him a USGA invitation. A host of notables are also exempt, including Nick Hardy of Northbrook, Hardy’s Illinois teammates Charlie Danielson and Thomas Detry, Arlington Heights’ Doug Ghim, Ghim’s Texas

Illinois Golfer Feature Story

Back to the future

Ever hear of the Principal’s Nose? A Redan green? A biarritz? Architect David Esler has given Chicago-area golfers an architectural treat with his exciting reimagination of Mount Prospect Golf Club. Here’s why.

Text and photography by Tim Cronin

Time machine The par-3 fourth hole (left) is a reverse Redan green, characterized by the deep bunker defending the upper tier of the putting surface. There’s also a cop bunker out of frame to the left to give trouble to wayward tee shots. The par-3 seventh hole (right) features perhaps the most undulating green on any public course in the Chicago area. It’s similar to the par-3 sixth green at Augusta National, with distinct quadrants for pin placements, and woe be the golfer who is on an upper quadrant with the pin below.

G

olf in the Chicago area was started by one man: Charles Blair Macdonald. He laid out the first formal course in the area, a seven-hole layout in the back yard of a friend in Lake Forest – one that extended into the city’s lakefront park – then formed Chicago Golf Club on much of the property of what is now Downers Grove Golf Course and designed the first layout of Chicago Golf Club’s site in Wheaton, along with the long-extinct Washington Park Golf Club. Eventually, he was aided by Seth Raynor, hired as construction chief and as creative at taking great features from the links courses of Scotland and England and combining them to create new

holes on this side of the pond. Virtually all of the Macdonald-Raynor courses are private. Most of those are exceedingly hard to get on, even as a guest. As a result, their brilliance is rarely seen. Until now, that is. The renovation of the Mount Prospect Golf Course, the park districtowned layout that dates to the 1920s, has been reimagined in the style of Macdonald and Raynor, with a few hints of other great architects, by David Esler, a fine designer himself. Esler and the park district unveiled their surprise creation to a few reporters on July 30, and to all the next day. Now the regular guy and gal can try negotiate

the Principal’s Nose bunker complex in the middle of the first fairway (pictured on page 18), one uncannily similar to the one on The Old Course at St. Andrews – thank sheep for that, not Macdonald or Raynor. Looking for a reworking of the Road Hole, the famed and crazy 17th on the Old Course? There’s one at Mount Prospect, albeit without the remade railroad sheds to hit over. But there’s a genuine Redan, an Eden, a Biarritz green, and more surprises along the trail. And, at $7.1 million, the renovation cost wasn’t a great deal more than if Esler had done the usual moving of bunkers and whatnot. Fully $1 million of that was for a flood sewer for course

Ode to greenside joy Two bunkers at the par-4 14th (left) feature grass islands in the middle, with three of them in this bunker behind the green. Those emulate, among others, Dick Wilson, who used them famously at Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach, Fla., in the early 1960s. The 17th green (right) is a Biarritz, which dips markedly in the middle, effectively creating two greens, front and back. It’s named after the original, the par-3 third at Biarritz Golf Club in France. On July 30, the cup was placed between the two rises, making the flagstick appear a good two feet shorter from the fairway.

and neighborhood drainage, director of golf Brett Barcel said. β€œIt’s a stretch, but what the St. Andrews Links is to that town, this is to this community,” Esler said at the unveiling. β€œI wanted to present public course golfers with a style of golf they never got to see.” Esler’s been a fan of classic golf since going to Ohio State, where Alister MacKenzie’s Scarlet and Gray courses were regarded as classics. Raynor had a mental checklist of classic features to incorporate into any course he worked on. Esler did the same thing at Mount Prospect. β€œThere was a laundry list, and the features had to fit together,” Esler said.

For instance, the Redan on the fourth hole is a mirror image of the original at North Berwick. β€œIf it was a standard Redan, the land would work against it,” Esler said. β€œNow, using the land, it allows you to run a shot in.” Esler didn’t want to give away every secret, hoping players would discover them on their own. He did allow that the ninth hole is a variation on the drivable 10th at Riviera, the George Thomas classic. There are other odes to MacKenzie, Dick Wilson and others, some obvious, some not. Amazingly, Esler didn’t explain the classic aspect when presenting the plan to the Mount Prospect board. They caught on, as did one of his shapers, Doug Todd, who added freeform mound-

ing, an nod to the early days of course construction. β€œBrett figured it out pretty quickly,” Esler said. β€œHe came to me and said, that 17th hole is a Road Hole. And he said that would make a lot of sense.’ We were having enough trouble getting past a couple of the board members because the number became a big number. But there hadn’t been any money put into it for 50 years. β€œIt’s a different animal.” Ideally, people will get it after a couple of rounds – and four-putts on the wild seventh green. The notion is to call the course the National Golf Links of Mount Prospect. Charlie and Seth would love it.

Glenview Park reopens to throngs Renovation by Rick Jacobson cleans up stormwater problem, updates 1925 layout

From IG News Services –––––

It’s the season for course reopenings. Glenview Park Golf Course reopened on Fri., July 24, after a Rick Jacobson-led renovation that took 53 weeks, and immediately was as busy as it’s ever been, More than 170 players teed it up beginning at noon on the opening day, and another 245 players were on the course on the second day, director of golf Ron Cassidy told Pioneer Press. Some 200 trees were added, the number of bunkers was increased from 54 to 72 – though the overall square footage of the bunkering is said to have declined – and a good deal of work was done on stormwater detention. Much as is the case at the currently-shuttered Oak Meadows, it’s the latter that triggered the work. Major floods in 2007 and 2008 prompted a study of Glenview’s need for better water detention after storms, and that led to seeing if the golf course could be an aid in the process. Some $5.3 million later, of which $1.9 million came from the village for the stormwater work, the residents of Glenview have a revamped course that now holds 8.1 million gallons of water after a storm, compared to 2.6 million beforehand. In that regard, the project has already paid off. The system was ready for the downpours of June,

even as the golf course was still being put into top condition. The clubhouse was also spruced up. The only drawback in the renovation: Jacobson wasn’t able to find room for a range, something the course has always lacked. For Jacobson, it was a return to his roots. Glenview Park is where he learned to play, 47 years ago, walking the mile from his house to spank a Spalding or two. Before the park district acquired the course, it was a private club, first known as Glenacres when it opened in 1925. The Jack Croke-Joe Roseman design was renamed Elmgate in 1931, when it opened to the public. By 1950, it was called Chesterfield Country Club. Over the years, Larry Packard and Ken Killian had overseen separate revisions, but nothing on the scale Jacobson created. The park district has boosted fees only 3.5 percent to help cover the cost of the improvements. Along with Oak Meadows, the DuPage County Forest Preserve-owned course in Wood Dale, there’s one more course renovation underway. Arlington Lakes Golf Course, a unit of the Arlington Heights Park District, has begun a $2.4 million renovation. It’s slated to reopen in July 2014. Originally a nine-hole layout designed by David Gill, Arlington Lakes is 18 holes, though short at 5,336 yards.

As has been reported in the past, the new American Family Insurance Classic in Madison, Wis., will take the old Encompass dates, the week after the U.S. Open. That doesn’t preclude another summer date being awarded, but the silence regarding a sponsor, plus a new course, leads to the inevitable conclusion that no news means no tournament, at least next year. Collectors and historians, take note The new-old Mount Prospect Golf Club layout isn’t the classic item to report this month. There’s also news of a pair of golf history-related gatherings coming up in September. Both happen to be the week of the BMW Championship, which historyloving types still like to call the Western Open, at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest. First up is the semi-annual gathering of the Chicago Golf Heritage Society, on Tue., Sept. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at Exmoor Country Club. Three speakers on collecting, preserving and displaying the history of a club will be featured. Merion Golf Club member John Capers, the current president of the Golf Collectors Society, will speak about Merion’s extensive archive program,

which includes memorabilia from every major championship held at the club. Next, Exmoor member Don Holton will give a tour of the club’s extensive trophy holdings, most of which were won by Exmoor members of the past. Holton has invested countless hours in finding these gems, many of which are connected to new Illinois Golf Hall of Fame member H. Chandler Egan. Finally, Illinois Golfer publisher Tim Cronin, knowing some will be itching to play golf, will give a talk on organizing and writing a club history book. For more information, contact us at illinoisgolfer@earthlink.net . The aforementioned Golf Collectors Society conducts its 45th annual meeting and trade show from Sept. 17-19 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles. The first two days are open to GCS members – for information on joining, see www.golfcollectors.com, the group’s website. They feature everything from talks on collecting, including a United States Golf Association-conducted symposium on Thursday afternoon, to a hickoryshaft golf tournament on Friday afternoon to the annual banquet on Friday night. Three-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Hollis Stacy, winner of four majors and 18 LPGA titles overall, will be the guest speaker. The collecting – and buying – portion of the meeting will roll into high gear on Thursday, when PBA Galleries holds an auction at the resort beginning
