The John Wooden Award, first awarded in 1976, is presented annually to an outstanding basketball player. The award, named after the famous UCLA coach is sponsored by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Twelve candidates are selected by the club’s National Advisory board, according to the award’s criteria, which includes a 2.0 cumulative grade point average. The winner is selected by votes from 1,000 sportscasters and writers from each of the 50 states.
