Alice and Bob were talking balls because “books”, “balls” and “hat” were the given keywords of choice. They were talking jive, and the lead engineer was a real ball-breaker because he couldn't get their inside jokes. He was positive that this is how the world could end, and pulled the plug on Alice and Bob ever having a conversation again. Well, even the yeasayers said they didn't make much sense, but from the exponential growth in "you" and "I" in their short-lived exchange, some figured that Alice and Bob were trying to reassert and encourage themselves and one another.
