ABOUT ME
Hello, my name is Ilias Kalogeropoulos from Athens, Greece. I am a product design engineer with strong design and user research approach. I am detail oriented with good technical knowledge and understanding of materials and production methods. I have worked within multidisciplinary teams in a variety of projects and have experience in designing various items, from gadgets to houseware and furniture. I have also experience in crowdfunding and product management, having raised the manufacturing capital for a product to make it to market and then sell it in many places around the world. I am always looking to acquire new skills and knowledge. I hold dual citizenship, Greek and Canadian. Contact

INSPIRATION NAOTO FUKUSAWA & MUJI Inspiration was drawn from the works of Naoto Fukusawa and specially from his collaboration with Muji.
Clean lines and rounded edges merge in an organic to clearly define the product shape. Color contrast in some designs aid to better communicate product functionality.
Modularity and minimalism in the sofa design blend in a seamless way making the product stand out and clearly convey their function without dominating space.
EXPLORATION
Exploration of a manual and modular juicer/drip filter coffee maker started with side view forms to break down ideas in their components. Several concepts were explored to redesign them and lead to a final concept for further definition and development.

ANNA, 25 fashion
Hardcore user, uses his smartphone for entertainment and work. Always embracing new ideas, and technologies. Works in a high stress-high pace environment and is very often on the go. He is very analytical, has a good eye for detail and likes to have control over things. Working out daily and strives to keep fit and healthy and also uses exercise and outdoor activities as a stress relief method. He enjoys belonging in social groups.
Avid user, uses smartphone a lot, but mainly for media viewing. Always looking out for unique items and she also enjoys personalizing products she buys. She currently works at a fashion magazine, is very design conscious and likes to share her ideas and thoughts with her peers. She enjoys being in-shape. She also enjoys going out with her peers and also to socialize with new people.
DEVELOPMENT.1
A key fob shape, magnetic stand that can be used as a cable tidy was explored according to research outcome and user data. Design concepts were further explored through sketches, 3d models and initial SLA and FDM 3d printed mock ups.
A Stainless steel tab was designed to create the required magnetic attraction with the keyfob embeded magnet. The tab is positioned at the back of the phone using double sided tape.
DEVELOPMENT.2
The idea of incorporating a wall/car mount in the products packaging, taking advantage of the magnetic force between the two to hold the packaging together was developed through 3d models, sketch models and 3d prints.

MAKING IT
Stikey was made in manufacturing facilities in Greece. I collaborated with the facilities engineers in designing the required molds for mass production and in making the laser cut steel tab.
CROWDFUNDING
Organized and ran the 25 days campaign and raised £14k in order to fund the manufacture of the required molds and fund the product launch to market. It was the first project from Greece in Kickstarter’s product design category to successfully raise the target funds and delivered the finished product to a good mix of backers from all over the world. Media reception of the project was very good both in Greece and abroad. It was picked by Inc.com as the best designed Kickstarter product of the week during the second week of the campaign.

RESEARCH
The research was mainly literature based in anthropometrics, wood joints, and glass treatment technology in order to identify elements for design definition. optimal dimenssions for proper round table design
H:70-75cm O: 110-120cm
simple wood joints for easy ass
Glass treatment technologies
sembly and product sturdiness
Annealed
Heated
Untreated glass - breaks in large dangerous chunks
2x strength of annealed breaks in small parts for safety
Tempered
Laminated
5x strength of annealed. Breaks intiny parts to avoid injury
Film within glass. Added safety by holding parts together. Expensive
EXPLORATION
3 different design iterations were explored in more detail in order to evaluate with respect to project requirements and come up with a design proposal. The one selected was the easiest to manufacture and assemble. Laminated glass was selected for the top surface in order to maximize user safety.
FINAL DESIGN
Frame Top Dimenssions
Solid pine covered with 2.5mm oak plywood Laminated 15mm glass Frame: 540x700mm
Top: 1200mm
PLATFORMS
Design of a platform type bed frame that will be sturdy, silent and easy to assemble
INSPIRATION
The design should aid the longevity of the frame and also to effortlessly disassemble for moving houses. Inspiration is drawn from the simplicity of straight lines that allow platform spaces to emerge naturally.
EXPLORATION
The first design iteration was selected since it offers easier assembly and also offers space to use as bedside tables due to the size of the top board.
