Four simple tips to create delicious, quality meals at home

A

s families become more concerned about the quality of food they are putting on the table, many are realizing that getting back to the basics is one of the best ways to eat better and not compromise on taste. If you’re looking for ways to improve your family meals it doesn’t require a major overhaul of your approach to shopping or cooking. Often, just a few simple adjustments can go a long way.

One of the easiest ways to upgrade a home-cooked meal is to select the freshest form of the recipe’s main ingredients, and focus on the quality of groceries on your shopping list. If you need some inspiration, here are four ways to focus on keeping meals simple and delicious:

* Using quality ingredients doesn’t mean everything needs to be made from scratch. Pack fresh vegetables into family favorites like classic salads and sand-

wiches. Complement these dishes with ready-made products that also focus on quality ingredients. For example, a staple ingredient that makes classic dishes such as BLTs and homemade potato salads taste even better is Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise. It’s made with high quality, simple ingredients such as oil, vinegar, and now cagefree eggs. Dedicated to real, quality ingredients for nearly 100 years, Hellmann’s recently announced its commitment to transition all of its recipes to 100 percent cage-free eggs by 2020.

* Pick out the main ingredient in your recipe and aim for quality. Whether you’re making steaks, chicken or eggs, try using farm-fresh products from a local producer. * Build meals around vegetables that are in season, such as midsummer BLTs when tomatoes are ripe for the picking. Plan a meal on the same day that you visit a local farmers market so you can use vegetables that may have been picked that morning, or better yet, cultivate your green thumb with a home garden for unlimited access to fresh - and inexpensive - vegetables.

* Use fresh herbs as seasoning to add a burst of flavor to your meals. Fresh garlic is a great flavor booster, as it has a long shelf live and can be used in a wide variety of cooking styles. The following Turkey & Avocado BLT recipe demonstrates how a few simple, quality ingredients can make for a delicious meal:

Turkey & Avocado BLT Ingredients: 1 tablespoon Hellmann’s or Best Foods Real Mayonnaise 1 ciabatta or soft roll, split and toasted 2 green leaf lettuce leaves 3 ounces sliced deli turkey breast 2 slices tomato 3 slices avocado (optional) 2 slices bacon, crisp-cooked Directions: Evenly spread Hellmann’s or Best Foods Real Mayonnaise on roll, then layer with remaining ingredients. Visit www.hellmanns.com for additional ideas on how to incorporate real, simple ingredients into more of your classic dishes. There you can find recipes, as well as behind-the-scenes coverage of the FOOD & WINE Classic from Aspen, Colo., where Hellmann’s partnered with celebrity chef Tim Love to share everything from chef secrets, to the essential ingredients that you’ll need to create your favorite dish. 9 iLENE CAROL/ FALL 2012

How do others perceive you? Written by: Larissa Castelluber Founder of design [moves]

It is important to take notice of the way in which people interact with you, the clothes you wear, the style of your hair, communicative speech, your skin and physical appearance. These are all aspects that affect both your personal and professional life that you may not take notice of. A person’s visual appearance has an effect on others that can make someone feel intimidated or openminded about approaching you. Speech and charisma are both key to helping the other person within the conversation understand what kind of person you are. Each of these aspects of yourself can speak volumes to another person. For example, a person who is at an average weight and is in good physical shape likes to wear business casual attire, with a powerful yet understanding charisma about themselves. This shows that they care for their physical appearance, however not as much as they prioritize their work. This individual enjoys feeling powerful in business

You Don"t Have to Be Young, Tall, Beautiful and Skinny to Be a Model Commercial models are the “real” and beautiful looking people seen in virtually every non fashion ad. These publications can vary from Gap catalogs to Readers Digest. The best part is that along with paying up to $250/hour (in New York only), most commercial models work on a part-time basis. Even if you live in a small market, chances are, commercial models are hired for jobs. Commercial models take a few hours off from their jobs, or leave school early, go to the photographer’s studio for the shoot, and go back to work/school before the end of the day.

ave you ever dreamed of seeing yourself in a magazine ad, on a billboard, in a catalogue on a poster, but thought you are too old, not tall enough or your body is not perfect enough?

Most people do not realize that commercial modeling is like any other kind of business. Before entering this or any industry, you must do your homework. You must learn about the types of photos that will get you the most work. You must understand what agents do, how to find legitimate representation and how to avoid the scams. The people who have done their research and have gotten the needed information will have the greatest chance for success. So, if you only thought that modeling was a fantasy for you, think again. You could be seeing yourself or your child in a great magazine ad very soon.

Fashion The Lane Style House is an online global showroom, was founded in 2011 and has been well-received by the fashion community. The comprehensive showroom joins upcoming and established fashion labels with our media, press and buyer contacts. Although, Fashion PR is not a new concept, The Lane Style House’s mission is to pair today’s technology with traditional PR practices. The Lane Style House is a one-stop virtual shop for celebrity, editorial and costume stylists, on its way to becoming a mandatory designer and stylist resource. The Lane Style House is a stylist’s dream, mixing avant-garde, contemporary and artistic pieces. The Lane is working hard to build long lasting relationships with stylists, celebrities and their publicists.

The Love Story In 1960 George and Elaine ran away and got married. They were 18. He was the all-american, mid-western football quarterback and she was the beautiful and blond cheerleader. They were a match made in heaven. They kept their marriage a secret for five years, never wore wedding rings and stole kisses when no one was looking. 52 years later, nothing has changed. They are still married, with three children, no wedding rings, and are still stealing kisses when no one is looking. George (or Georgie and they called him when he was little) and Elaine are my grand parents. To this day, my 99 year old great grand mother still doesn’t know they ran away and got married. --Devin VanderMaas Inspired by their honesty, youthful spirit, and simplicity, I created the Georgie and Elaine Collection. G&E is a contemporary readyto-wear line in the bridge market. With each collection, we aim to tell a different, real life love story. Staying true to soft-muted pallets, silk fibers and flowing chiffon dresses, G&E reflects femininity, nature, and romance. The Georgie and Elaine Spring 2013 collection is based on love and eternal romance. The inspiration behind the line is that of a real-life fairytale and the desire to share other magical, historical, and wondrous stories of found love. The designs are simplistic, but ethereal with muted and pastel pallets. The pieces are contemporary and vaguely resemble designs from another era. This collection is a ready-to-wear line with a focus in the bridge market. With feminine dresses, silky slips, and classic separates, Georgie and Elaine exemplifies grace, beauty, and the romantic heart that pumps within everyone.

Jessica JessicaVerSteeg Versteeg speaks on running for Miss Iowa and what beauty means to her. The beauty of a woman is not the shape of her body, the color of her skin, or how white her teeth are. True beauty is not psychical. I believe the real beauty of a woman is reflected in her soul. It is shown in her caring ways, the way she lovingly loves to love, the passion that she shines from within. My name is Jessica VerSteeg and I am running for Miss Iowa USA although this is a “beauty pageant” I hope to show and inspire others that beauty comes from within, it comes from confidence and it comes from faith (in whatever your faith may be). My mother Francesca Roman is my Beauty Queen. She was brought up facing many obstacles from being too tall, too skinny, too poor, too Latin, and many, many more bumps in the road that most would look at and say “aww poor girl she does not even have a chance to get out of poverty.” She proved them all wrong and joined the US Air Force sending her family money and encouraging her brothers and sisters not to fight with the gangs of NYC but to fight for the USA in the military. After the Gulf war my mother was put in a very difficult situation and was forced to be a single mother of 3 girls. She somehow provided us

20 iLENE CAROL/ FALL 2012

with everything we needed, from a hot breakfast every morning to new school clothes every year. She somehow managed to go to college, work full time, and support us in our choice of school curriculums and events while staying up with my sisters and I to do homework after dinner, sometimes until past midnight. My mother was always “Super Mom” and she was always beautiful, she has always been the rock in our family so when I got the news that my mother had been fighting breast cancer for the past few months and somehow told no one, I was in disbelief. When I found out she had gone to work every day after chemo and radiation while still making breakfast and dinner every day for my sisters I just could not accept that my rock, my super mom, my beauty queen was losing her hair, was fighting for her life, and wanted no sympathy from anyone. I knew at that moment that this was something I wanted to raise awareness for. I was in Miami modeling and I only found out about my mother’s cancer because I flew home one Christmas to surprise her and my sisters. Little did I know I would be the one surprised to see my Mothers beautiful long black curly locks gone. Her beautiful Puerto Rican complexion turned grey, and her loving hands that used to scratch my back until I fell asleep had nails that were dark and week. My mother told me to not cry for her only to pray and be strong. She told me she has faith that our Lord is using her to help others. She stuck to that and made

sure my sisters and I did as well. My mother has always taught us that beauty is much more than a pretty face, shiny hair, and new clothes, she never invested in material things so I grew up truly believing in what she preached. Just like my faith grows with age, my definition of beauty has grown with age as well. During my mother’s cancer I saw her at some of her most beautiful moments. I hope to be crowned Miss Iowa USA so that I can reach out to even more people and raise awareness about breast cancer for men and women. I want to inspire more people to look for beauty in actions. To learn to stop seeing with their eyes and to instead learn to look deep within a person to the core of their souls. To find the courage within themselves to look at everything they think is bad in their lives and to see it as a learning opportunity, a path to help others, a challenge and a chance to grow spiritually as God intended.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt

I model full time in Miami, FL and New York City, NY but my boyfriend and I are both from Oskaloosa, Iowa. My boyfriend is Tyler Sash and he plays for the New York Giants. We also have a home in Iowa that we go to on weekends and on holidays because our families still live there. We love Iowa!

Let Go to Grow

Let Go to Grow is the groundbreaking new book by Doug and Polly White that explores how the role of the owner must change as a business grows from a one-person startup to a multimillion-dollar enterprise. Many books focus on how to start a business, how to grow sales, or how to run a Fortune 500 company, but very little is written about the role of the principal and how it must change as a business grows. Doug and Polly analyzed more than 100 companies to learn why some businesses thrive and others fail to reach their potential. They found that as a business grows the owner will have to let go of certain responsibilities. If the principal doesn’t let go, at some point, his or her capacity will be exhausted. He or she will then unwittingly become the constraint to further growth. Letting go is all the more difficult because at each step in the growth of the enterprise the owner will have to let go of the very thing that made the business successful at the prior stage. Equally important is that the owner will have to acquire new skills to deal with an everincreasing set of challenges as the enterprise expands.

Let Go to Grow outlines what small business owners must do to succeed, but it goes beyond simply describing what must be done. It explains how to do these things. Order Your Today! Order YourCopy Copy Today! About the Authors

Overeating is a common response to stress for many people. You are not alone. For most, stressed spelled backwards is “D-E-S-S-E-R-T-S!” Here are a few tips to get you through the tough times:

o Gooders Revealed -- Find out what charities hit the spotlight and who is our honorary humanitarian.

1. Write down what you are eating and how you are feeling for several days. Identify other eating cues and unhealthy foods that you tend to consume when you overeat. Note your “self talk.” What do you say to yourself and how do you justify the decision to overeat? 2. Stabilize your eating patterns. Set a goal to eat three meals every day and plan for healthy snacks between meals to prevent extreme hunger. Try not to let more than three or four hours elapse before eating a healthy snack or meal. Don’t berate yourself if you slip. Just get back to eating regularly as soon as possible. 3. Manage your time so you are not under stress. Get in touch with hunger and satiety. Ask yourself, “Am I eating because I am hungry or because I am stressed?” Eat if you are hungry and understand that you are making a conscious choice.

4. Savor the flavor and texture of the food. Eat slowly and chew every bite. This will give the body time to send chemical signals that register satiety. To contact Donna M.
