Follow the ILASCD Conference signs. WEDNESDAY REGISTRATION: If you arrive WEDNESDAY evening, you may pick up your session tickets, name badge and holder, Yummy Coupons, and complimentary tote bag at the Conference Registration tables between 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Verify the tickets for Thursday and/or Friday attendance. The tickets and badge serve as your admission to the various conference events. This is also an excellent time to solve any registration or ticket problems prior to the conference. THURSDAY OR FRIDAY REGISTRATION: You may pick up your conference materials at the Conference Registration tables between 7:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Verify the tickets for Thursday and/ or Friday attendance. Yummy Coupons Illinois ASCD is providing $15.00 in meal coupons per day. KIM ADSIT
Kim is a 2002 Teacher of the Year and has taught kindergarten for 30 years. For nearly 20 years she has traveled to share her ideas and strategies with other teachers. Focusing on developing curriculum and strategies that incorporate child-centered activities, she emphasizes the fun of kindergarten by tapping into the curiosity of young children that plants the seed for lifelong learning. Kim has been selected as an Expert Teacher, and she served as a teacher mentor. She has a Specialist Degree in Early Childhood Education as well as an At-Risk Endorsement. Kim has authored many teacher resources that are available on the: TeacherPayTeachers website.
BECKY ANDERSON
Becky Anderson is the owner of Anderson’s Bookshops in Naperville and Downers Grove and Anderson’s Bookfair Company in Aurora, and Anderson’s Toyshop in Naperville. She began working at the age of 11 in her family’s drugstore after a fire in the store. Her first job was to dust soot off shelves and fixtures. She is the fifth generation to manage the family-owned and operated businesses, which had its beginnings in Naperville in 1875. Books were sold from the beginning, but the family’s first official bookshop opened 59 years ago above their pharmacy. She is also past President of the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association and the Association of Booksellers for Children. Anderson’s Bookshops won the Publisher’s Weekly Bookseller of the Year Award in 2011. She has been a children’s literature consultant and book buyer for over 35 years. Putting the right book in the right child’s hand is her lifelong goal. Her family business has won numerous awards both locally, statewide, and nationally; including the Illinois Family Business of the Year in 2002 by Loyola University.
MARY AMOSON
Mary is an enthusiastic and passionate Kindergarten teacher from Georgia with 18 years of experience. She holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and an Educational Specialist Degree in Instructional Technology. Recently, Mary earned an endorsement in Dyslexia. In addition to teaching full-time, Mary finds joy in presenting to educators across the country for more than 14 years. She loves sharing engaging ideas, handson activities, and rigorous content that has worked with her own kindergartners through her website, Sharing Kindergarten. Mary is committed to instilling passion in teachers 8

KERI BROWN
Holly is a full-time educator who has over 20 years of experience teaching kindergarten and serving as an early literacy specialist. She currently has the very unique opportunity of teaching both beginning readers AND pre-service teachers in her new position as a Professor of Reading Science, teaching both in the college classroom and in the university’s science of reading pre-k -4th grade model school program. Holly is passionate about student engagement, differentiated instruction, early literacy, and educational neuroscience. She is currently wrapping up her Ph.D. in Reading, Language, & Literacy with a specialization in Educational Neuroscience and loves helping teachers better understand exactly how the brain learns when beginning to read and write. Professionally, her mission is to teach EVERY child to be a proficient reader and writer, including those with dyslexia and/ or other learning challenges. Outside of the classroom, her mission is to help teachers bridge the gap between research and practice in fun and engaging ways.
Keri Brown is an educator in Alabama who has been teaching for the past 15 years in kindergarten and first grade. She loves implementing hands-on ideas into her classroom as well as implementing tech in meaningful ways. She loves learning new strategies and researching new ideas to help students and teachers all over. She shares her teaching ideas and her teaching journey at Enchanted Kinder Garden. CHRISTINA DECARBO-WAGERS
Christina (Miss DeCarbo) is a PreK-5 literacy coach, teacher, national presenter, and curriculum author from Northeast, Ohio. She is trained in structured literacy at the Associate Level through the Orton Gillingham Academy and LETRS. Her research-based sessions are packed with engaging lessons and instructional strategies to help students become exceptional readers, writers, and problemsolvers. Christina loves collaborating with educators on Instagram @missdecarbo. As a mom of two little ones, she enjoys spending time with family and drinking all the coffee! JIM GILL
Jim Gill is a musician and author with singular credentials among children’s artists. Jim spent twenty years directing programs in music play for families with children with special needs in the Chicago area. His particular writing style—combining word play and movement opportunities into songs—was developed through this work. Jim completed his graduate studies in child development at the Erikson Institute of Chicago with a special emphasis on the study of play. His work experience and studies have led Jim to create each of his recordings and books as an opportunity for playful interactions between a child and a caring adult.
LeAnna Wolkis Goldstein is an energetic and passionate Kindergarten Teacher from Arizona with over 25 years of teaching experience. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University, a Master’s Degree from NAU, an Early Childhood Endorsement, and achieved the rigorous advanced credentials of National Board Certification. While teaching in her award-winning classroom, The “Wolkis Wonderland,” she designs mini hands-on center-based stations that are brought to life with novel realia. As a Nationally Recognized Presenter, LeAnna empowers educators to create cooperative learning environments utilizing music, movement & manipulatives that foster 100% student engagement.
Jim has released ten award-winning recordings of music play for young children. The songs are now available on all streaming platforms so that everyone can have access to his active musical games! Jim is also the author of two children’s books. Over the years he has received five awards from the American Library Association for his releases.

Gloria Koster has over 20 years of experience as a children’s librarian, primarily at West Elementary School in New Canaan, Connecticut. She has also worked as a high school librarian and as the interim director of Pound Ridge (NY) Library. In addition, Gloria has written many educational books for early elementary students and is the author of several picture books, including Little Red Ruthie, The King with a Horse’s Ears, Dance the Hora, Isadora!, and the forthcoming The Misadventure of Bob the Book. Melissa has been a dynamic classroom teacher (Michigan and Texas; 2000-2008), a state level Literacy Specialist (Texas; 2008-2012) a Professional Learning Designer for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DC; 2012-2014), and a K-12 ELAR and SLAR Specialist (Texas; 2014- 2015). She currently works full-time alongside her team of literacy staff developers to run Leach Literacy Training from her home state of Texas. It is Melissa’s life work to make an impact on student achievement. Leach Literacy blends the research and knowledge of best practices and hands-on application to real-life classroom settings. Melissa’s desire to reach more students is happening, one teacher, and one training, at a time.
Jackie is an enthusiastic preschool teacher with over fourteen years of classroom teaching experience in both fullday and half-day settings. She is from Missouri where she earned a Masters and Bachelors in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Maryville University. Her goal is to help you unleash your teaching superpowers! Jackie’s passion is to inspire you with play-based activities, themed centers, and supports that nurture and challenge little learners in a caring classroom community. MARSHA MCGUIRE
Dr. Mike Lockett is a highly recognized educator. He served 33 years as a public school teacher and award winning administrator in the state of Illinois. He has given over 4000 programs across 32 states and in 17 countries. His programs have included 26 tours of Taiwan and 15 of China where he has perfected his techniques of using “Story Play” to teach English as a foreign language to young children. He is the author of 17 children’s books and a young adult novel in the US, and 11 children’s books in Taiwan.
Marsha McGuire is a kindergarten teacher in Cadillac, Michigan where she has accumulated over 15 years of teaching in early childhood classrooms. Her undergraduate degree was completed at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and her graduate degree in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Differentiated Instruction at Grand Valley State University. Marsha is also the author and creator behind the blog, A Differentiated Kindergarten where she shares ideas, activities and products. Her blog has become an avenue to aide other instructors in developing practical, developmentally appropriate and differentiated instructional strategies in their own classroom.

Katie Blue-Mense is a children’s author, a nationally recognized speaker, and an energetic Kindergarten teacher in Southern Illinois with more than 2 decades of classroom experience. She has a passion for creating fun, hands-on lessons and activities designed to meet the needs of all students. As a student who struggled through school, she truly understands that every student has different needs and learning styles. Katie is a McKendree University graduate, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and later, a Master of Arts degree in education. Crystal Oswald is a district service coach in the North Shore of Chicago. She works with a variety of schools as an instructional coach with an emphasis on social emotional learning and literacy. Prior to this position, she was an SEL Curriculum and Instruction Specialist for 3 years and an elementary school teacher (grades 1-5) for 14 years. Hilary Statum is a kindergarten teacher in Middle Tennessee with 15 years of experience at the school she attended as a child. Mr. Greg is a kindergarten teacher and the creator of The Kindergarten Smorgasboard (TKS). He has been teaching for 19 years. He spent 1 year teaching 5th grade and 2 years teaching 2nd grade before he moved to kindergarten which is where he found his passion and his calling. On the very first day, he fell in love and knew that kindergarten is where he belonged. We typically don’t keep our eyes on the source. Our students are born with five core biological needs: Connection, Autonomy, Attunement, Love and Trust. If a student’s core needs were not met, they develop challenges in self-regulation and interpersonal connection. These compromised needs bring forth student behavioral challenges, the symptoms, in the classroom. This session will highlight many butcher paper activities for various themes, seasons, and learning objectives. Jackie will walk you through the quick process of how to create a butcher paper to match literacy and math objectives. In this one-hour session, participants will learn how to activate prior knowledge using a research-based graphic organizer entitled, “What Do I Know” empowering students of all abilities to share their knowledge of a topic prior to reading. Once students have shared their background knowledge and read a piece of text, students will have the opportunity to create a series of inquiry questions. According to Brugar and Roberts (2022), “…inquiry is for all students, including those who are still building the skills that inquiry requires-perhaps even, and especially, for those kids because it provides so many opportunities to adjust instructional and scaffold learning.” These inquiry questions tap into students’ natural curiosity. As a result, teachers will be able to determine learning gaps giving students the tools they need to be successful. Finally, participants will learn how to utilize “What Do I Already Know” and Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) as formative assessments providing purposeful and worthwhile feedback to the teacher and students.

I will demonstrate how beneficial their implementation will be, particularly as education in Illinois, as well as across the country, moves towards utilizing more online platforms and students navigate “post-COVID” education. Additionally, participants will learn research-based information on both non-cognitive skills and growth mindset, see examples of classroom implementation, and be given a 5-step strategy to begin implementation from the first day of school.
This session will focus on helping students regain appropriate social skills when interacting in and out of the classroom, specifically focusing on regulation strategies, taking turns, and collaborating in groups. This session will introduce strategies for teachers to use to support struggling learners.

However, recent research suggests, that this is not typically the case. Instead, the promise of early writing goes unrealized in many U.S. classrooms (Rowe, 2018).

Trina Hill Becci McCleary In an effort to outgrow ourselves we, a kindergarten teacher and instructional coach, partner to help kindergarten students get their voice on the page, we consider Dyson’s question of what is writing? And...Why do we write? Writing is an intention-driven symbolic tool, through which we participate in kinds of social events. Writing is driven by intention. Skills are just skills, writing is communication. So, from the very beginning this matters (Dyson, 2016). Using a sociocultural perspective (Gee, 2003), we are exploring writing through this lens, where learning to write is fundamentally about social participation. During this school year, we came to understand how this writing space fostered essential aspects of development- including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, joy, and play - that are all fostered through writing. Here we uncover how we support and make instructional decisions that allow children to be decision-makers about their writing as they express their thoughts on paper (Calkins, 2011; Ray and Glover; 2008, Dyson, 2013). We follow the lead of our students to make their voices central in our classroom composing and loving students’ lived experiences that are reflected daily in their writing honoring all their voices. Many students enter our classrooms at very different levels psychologically and academically. Some struggle with focus or even adverse childhood experiences and trauma that affect their executive functioning and ability to self-regulate. Students often do not have the tools they need to focus, keep their emotions in check, and self regulate when their body is starting to feel dysregulated. Count to ten, take a deep breath, or request a break are all great strategies, but can our students use them when anger and frustration set in? This session will show you ways to help bring your students bodies up, help them identify in a healthy way signs they are becoming dysregulated, and giving them tools to help self regulate. What goes up... Must come down...And this session will show ways to incorporate movement and calming strategies to help keep our students centered and able to learn.

The University of Illinois recently launched a free access online resource for parents and teachers of preschoolers filled with kindergarten readiness information and activities. Participants will receive a shared definition of kindergarten readiness, as well as free access to The Ready Child website- full of resources to give users the knowledge and skills needed to help children succeed during the transition kindergarten. The site provides families and teachers of preschoolers the resources to work together to identify each child’s unique strengths, and to build on those strengths. In this session we will discuss 5 core objectives of school readiness, explore The Ready Child resources, and engage in a handson school readiness activity.
