This issue we talk about the third year exhibition in 2013. It will include work from the third year Graphic design students for this year. The exhibition will be held at the Graham Sutherland Building on 31 May and will include selected work from the third year graphic design student who will graduate the end of this academic year. Some guests maybe attending the exhibition to view the work of the third year students for possible future business with the guests that maybe viewing the work. Some of these names include‌ While they are busy putting everything together, they have managed to provide us with an insight of their experience putting the exhibition together by talking to us about the work putting together and fund raising for the exhibition as well as the work to be put in the exhibition that they have produced ready to be put up.

The Making of Hi Res This is the first issue of Hi Res, and to celebrate this occasion. We are going to tell you stage by stage how we made the issue, from the basic concepts and layout designs to the final published piece that you are reading right now.

First we went off to research to see how we could present the information in a way that people would be interested with. Once we had done that we came together to come up with some ideas on how we should present this newsletter and decided what should be the content of this issue before we went back to researching on the best way to present the content.

After the research we went ahead and designing layouts on the best possible solution to showing the information in an interesting context, so people could enjoy reading. After this we decided to design a style that people would enjoy reading, so we started to design logos for the newsletter and tried to design an interesting style around the logo.

After the designing process was complete we had to gather all of the resources for the newsletter. This included all images (with help from the third year students happy to help us collect images of their work) and we then wrote our own text for the newsletter. After all this was done, it was just a matter of putting the whole thing together ready for you to read.

INTERVIEW:1

BEHIND T H E SCENES

We sat down with the team putting together this year’s GD degree show to find out just how they did it.

Hi Res: I guess we should start the interview off with exactly what does it take to put together an exhibition of this size? Teamwork, Good communication with each other Good arguments Yeah the ability to argue Also strength to have the ability to carry chairs, all day long Also it’s being in the right mind-set, because if you’re not in the right mind set to say you want to do this you might as well not turn up...Yeah, you’ve got to turn up on the day and be like “We’re gonna get this all done, we’re gonna be fine.” It’s just the willingness to get things done and being able to trust other people to get things done as well About trust, I’ve got to be able to say to someone can “Can you do this?” and if they say “Yeah I can” you will be able to say, “Ok I trust you to do that.” For example, with the catalogue, we had to trust people with all those pages, to get them done on time. You have to know the abilities of the people you work with before you give them a task to do because they may not have the skill set to be able to do that there’s not really much point in giving them that task.

Hi Res: What sort of tasks have you had to do? Collecting artwork for the display boards and the catalogue and website, making sure all the files are there, comparing prices and getting quotes from people... Chasing people up for work! Making sure the files are right, liasing with technical people. Being able to work with Keith and communicate with him about what tasks need doing. Painting, to make sure everything here looks nice, make sure we maintain the room and keep everything clean.

Hi Res: What was the most fun task you have done? None of the above! (laughter) Probably going to Ikea and getting some tables, that was the limit of our fun. How did we get them back here anyway? In the car I carried them on my back! (more laughter) I think the whole thing is the design of it all. Thinking of how we’d put it together and seeing it come together, it’s quite exciting It’s a good collaboration between all of our work, where we are split into groups, so one group would be producing something for the catalogue while one is working on the website you just see put together as work together, were in separate groups but your doing it all for the same cause so how it all plans out together. So it goes from being separate things like the layout of the exhibition to fundraising, everything just seems to mesh together at the end. It takes a lot of time to get done but once you get to that point you just turn around and you go: “I think we’ve actually done really well.” Because you will panic but you have more than enough time to finish so try to keep your head down and get on with it.

INTERVIEW:2

BEHIND T H E SCENES

We sxfdsfsfdgdfhfgdhfghfghgfhghgfhfghow to find out just how they did it.

Hi Res: When did you start fund raising? (I think it was about last week or something) It was after Christmas everybody reading this who is going to be doing a degree show, go fundraising, start fundraising now because if you leave it to the last minute, we were lucky because we managed to make a lot of money in a short time but that was a tall order for the fund raising people to be able to do that, but start doing it now rather than later because it may appear a long time away and you start to believe you got loads of time but as soon as you come back for your third year, it just goes because of all of the project work you have to do and then all of a sudden the fund raising had to be done after Christmas, and then that when we started fund raising and we had so much pressure put on us, and we’ve just had all the pressure taken off our backs, so from Christmas up until a few weeks ago it was hell. Hi Res: What exactly have you done to promote the exhibition? Third Years: We did posters, goodie bags, logo, and decided name, it was a big group decision to decide how it would look by voting for thing like the logo and the name, so say if ten people are not happy with it the majority are then it will be picked, so it was a group decision, you will argue with people on your course though and you will fall out with people (you know that guy who I cut the throat of, he’s in the cannel), it’s always the people with the loudest mouths that will argue, the people who like to shoot off their opinions shouldn’t all be in the same group, also with promotion we have had a Twitter page and go fund me.

PULL QUOTE HERE XXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX

Hi Res: Did you give incentives to people who gave generous amount of money? Third Years: Yes we gave bits of art work, screen prints and stuff like that, Thank you videos, the thank you videos were pretty easy we were all filmed together and then each person give their own part of the film and it worked out very well Hi Res: How much did it cost to put the entire exhibition together? Third Years: I would say about £2000 just to get this room done, and then a little bit extra for any emergency or anything like that, the money as been quite well organised, for the website I asked for a certain amount of money and it was there, it was quite good really because we didn’t have to fight, so they ask how much you need and you say how much and they say it fine, considering I thought I was going to wait for about an hour, two minutes, how much do you need, this much, fine. Same as others if they need an amount, we raised enough to be able to do that.

Hi Res: What did you do to raise the money? Third Years: We’ve have two bake sales, which were successful, a couple of nights out to raise money, you would be surprised at how much you can make on a night out, the first one we got around £500, that was just charging admission on the door, and the second was about 200 to 300 but it all adds up, you would be surprised at how much you can make from stuff like that and the go fund page, and we all give £50 to put into it which made around 500 catalogues.
