GENERAL SUMMARY

END OF THE GALLOWS The play begins with BLACK holding his brother WHITE hostage. They are by a cave facing the shore. It is raining. As soon as the play begins, BLACK shoots WHITE but the latter surprisingly comes back to life. They are immortal, cursed to live for eternity. Apparently, BLACK and WHITE have been playing this cat-and-mouse game for over two millennia: MR. BLACK r uns after MR. WHITE, MR. WHITE is caught, tortured, and killed, MR. WHITE escapes, and then it begins all over again. BLACK has a penchant of doing the grand coup de gras at 3 AM and they still have time. BLACK proposes that they tell stories to entertain one another, and of course WHITE cannot refuse. They tell stories back and forth about people like themselves, people with a reason not to die, people who cannot die even if they tried. One by

one, they go through the stories of the WOMAN who betrayed her lover, the deafmute MOTHER whose only son bit off the umbilical cord that had connected them since childbirth to r un away, the remorseless SOLDIER who even after killing so many innocent people could not give a reason as to why he did those ter rible things. After the stories of the other immortals, they go through their own stor y, the first stor y of betrayal, of woe, the stor y of the first immortals, the stor y of Cain and Abel. By the end of Act 1, BLACK or Cain asks for forgiveness from his brother. WHITE or Abel forgives his brother but says that only the sinner may forgive himself. In throes of suffering, BLACK asks WHITE to take his life. WHITE cannot. To soothe his brother’s pain, WHITE ends the world by

shooting the moon with BLACK’s pistol. Act 2 begins with the end of the world and what people did on that day. BLACK and WHITE pack their bags and travel the rest of the universe. They meet the RED KING, the instigator of all war and enmity. With the RED KING, BLACK and WHITE confront their own situation of brother killing brother. Afterwards they see the creation of the star, a star created by the remnants of the now dead planet Earth. And finally they meet the GOD-MAN himself.

Even after all the stars have died, BLACK could still not forgive himself. All the immortals gather on the last piece of livable rock in the universe, the cave where the play began. When all hope of rest is lost, they see a light in the distance; it is the sun at its last days. One by one, the immortals jump and burn back into stardust. WHITE invites BLACK to go with him. BLACK denies him. The play ends with BLACK sitting on the rock bed, the last living being in the universe.
