Vancouver, British Columbia Currently this structure just accommodates the Architecture School at the University of British Columbia. With the additions and new program, it will also include the Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning department. Their goal is to bring the interdisciplinary idea by having all three departments working together in the same building, exchanging ideas with one another. The goals for this design were to create comfortable gathering spaces for interaction through circulation, provide more of a presence on Main Mall while activating the central courtyard, and creating dynamic roof forms that naturally daylight studios through top lighting.

Exterior Breakdown

This civic center design located in the center of downtown is spread on two blocks. The City Hall + Police Station is a two story building across the street from the library and community + senior center. The central plaza of the three buildings is the main public gathering space. The water tower, a historical landmark of Junction City, provides shelter for the jungle gym. The roof shapes allow natural light into the more active spaces while the service areas appear modest. The horizontal metal siding which covers the service areas contrasts the vertical wood siding used to display the communal public spaces.

The Masieri Foundation is located on the Grand Central in Venice, Italy. The design is based on a radiating pattern that responds to the corner in which the Grand Canal is located. The Masieri Foundation houses twelve students and contains a gallery, dining area, classroom, lecture hall, penthouse for the faculty housing, dorm rooms, studio space, and a beautiful patio space.

Parti Diagram

The facade is a direct contrast of traditional Venetian facades and modern facades. The glazed curve on the corner of the building makes the public spaces comfortable and exciting as it faces the Grand Canal with no interruption. By creating this ambience, students will be most likely to hang out in the public spaces instead of their rooms.

Wellsprings Alt. High School Wellsprings Alternative High School, located in Eugene, Oregon, creates an environment of “separate but equal with the church facilities addressing 18th street and school spaces open to the rear forestry. The library opens to the south side with Wetlands and integrates the tranquil beauty of nature for students. There are two courtyards, one for both church and school and the smaller one specifically for the students. The focus was to integrate landscape in design, connect our building with nature and imply vague connections between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Zee Chair The Zee Chair was designed in Copenhagen, Denmark while taking a Scandinavian furniture studio course. A chair has to be designed and built at full scale from a plank of maple wood with the dimensions of 75 cm x 25 cm x 10 cm. The top of the seat is chiseled to provide comfort. Biscuit joints were used to make the seat one piece, dowels for the back leg and support, and dovetail joints used for the front two leg connections.
