MARCH PROJECT TOUR - HEADQUARTERS Last month we had the opportunity to tour one of Houston’s most original workplaces, and see the brand-new space designed by PDR. Headquarters is located in Houston’s trendy EaDo neighborhood and everything about the space embodied the creative vibe felt from that area. Headquarters is a creative office where people with all different needs can find a space that works for them. You bring your own furniture and the collaborative and shared spaces are provided to you. IIDA would like to give a huge thank you to Peter and Devin Licata, co-founders of Headquarters, for touring and hosting us, and WPS and MDI for sponsoring food and drinks.

IIDA STUDENT MENTORING PROGRAM - A WORD FROM THE PROFESSIONALS We would like to thank all who could participate in the 2017 IIDA Student Mentoring Program. Design students were matched with mentors to experience a day in the life of a designer. Students attended meetings with clients, visited job sites, sat in CEU lunch and learns, and so much more. If you participated, we would love to hear your stories and see your photos. You can send us your 1-2 paragraph write up and your photos to Maureen McLaine at Maureen.McLaine@stantec.com. If you are interested in seeing what other students and mentors were up to, you can search hashtag #IIDAsmp. Kressia Rodriguez of English + Associates, hosted Daniela Gonzalez a student from Houston Community College as part of the IIDA Student Mentorship program. “The day started with a tour of the office and went straight into a conference call construction meeting. During lunch she was able to experience a CEU lunch and learn. She spent part of the afternoon in our resource library getting to know some of the finishes we use on a daily basis and was able to assist in finish selections of a current project. She finished her day by spending some time learning some Revit tools from one of our Project Managers. The E+A team truly enjoyed having Daniela at the office and spending the day with our designers.” - Kressia Rodriguez, English + Associates

Maureen McLaine and Gretchen Diesel of Stantec Architecture, hosted Houston Community College student Montserrat Puente as part of the IIDA Student Mentorship program. “Trying to convey what a designer does into one day can be difficult, so we did our best to compact as much information as we could into our time. We began with a tour of the office and getting to know more about each other. After the tour, Gretchen and Montserrat met with the design team on a current project. For lunch, we sat in on a CEU lunch and learn. During the second half of the day, she sat in a team meeting where she had some great ideas regarding the furniture and equipment layout for a space. The day came to a close with finish selections and some discussion on material specifications. The Stantec team had a great time working with Montserrat & truly enjoyed her input.” - Maureen McLaine, Stantec Architecture

IIDA STUDENT MENTORING PROGRAM - A WORD FROM THE STUDENTS

Kimberly Serrano of Gensler hosted Nancy Tongogaro, a student from the Art Institute as part of the IIDA Student Mentorship program. “Kimberly was a great mentor! I was given very clear instructions on how to get to the Gensler office and was also provided with multiple options on a date that would fit both our schedules. During the session, she took great strides to ensure a beneficial learning experience by having me sketch a display for a client, visiting a job site, and walking me through the process of receiving submittals and RFIs through a general contractor. The most meaningful part of my day was visiting the job site and being able to see the process in motion. In addition to seeing the process, it was nice to see the interaction between interior designer and client. I am grateful for IIDA and Kimberly for making opportunities like this possible for students.” - Nancy Tongogaro, Art Institute of Houston Kimberly Phipps-Nichol formally with Inventure Design hosted Nadia Krotz, a student from the Art Institute as part of the IIDA Student Mentorship program. “I had a great experience attending the IIDA mentorship day with Kimberly Phipps-Nichol. I was able to see what the day in the life of a designer was like and learned how their office functions. I reviewed finishes for a client with Kimberly and Courtney Thomas, the architect in the morning. We went to the job site to meet with the client, contractor, broker and owner and looked at the shell space for a medical office. I really appreciated watching Kimberly work at the job site and it was obvious how her experience really benefited the client. We don’t get a lot of exposure to healthcare projects in school, but seeing how design can improve the patient and employee experience was inspiring.” - Nadia Krotz, Art Institute of Houston
