EVENT RECAP- Product Runway 14
IIDA Product Runway 2014: Garden of Secrets, was Houston’s sixth annual Product Runway event, benefitting the Houston Furniture Bank, TAID, and the IIDA Education Foundation. 20 participating teams, made up of professional architects, interior designers, and design students, competed by designing and constructing couture garments made from assigned interior product materials. The designs were showcased during an energetic fashion show at the Bayou Music Center. With nearly 1400 attendees, IIDA Houston City Center was able to donate $30,000.00 to the Houston Furniture Bank, $5,000 to TAID, $5,000 to the IIDA TX OK Education Foundation and $2,500 for Student Memberships to IIDA.

EVENT RECAP: May CEU
Over 30 designers and industry professionals attended an engaging CEU on Ultracompact Surfacing at Cosentino's new showroom off Beltway 8 and I-10 on Thursday, May 15, 2014. As the first IIDA Houston event after the close of the sixth annual IIDA Product Runway in April, philanthropy chairs Sean Pantin of PBK and Heather Rogers of McCoy started the night off right by sharing publicly the success of the event! All donations were announced to the roaring applause of the group. IIDA Houston also took the time to again thank our PR14 Event Underwriter, JCS, by presenting co-owner Mike Carr with a glossy black guitar signed by members and guests at the VIP Social at Hard Rock Cafe. In rock and roll fashion, the crowd encouraged a song to be played by JCS, which Mike replied to with a humble smile, not a strum, and many thanks to his team and countless IIDA volunteers! After awards and refreshments, a spirited presentation provided by The Kip Co was held in the Forum. Presenter Kip Altstaetter taught the group about the future of surfaces and a new way of producing a less permeable, graffiti proof, binder-less surface material. Strong enough and applicable for use in indoor, outdoor, floor, counter, building cladding, and other vertical surfaces, the production of this new Ultracompact Surfacing takes place over 1.2miles of production span, and is tested to withstand 800*C. Although the crowd was disappointed that such a high temperature was not demonstrated with a blow torch at the front of the room, no building or safety codes were broken during the course of the presentation. After all, it IS all about Health, Safety, and Welfare!

Join us June 19 , 2014 from 6-8pm for a project tour at The Joy School. When the doors opened in 1997, The Joy School had just four students. Today it educates 129 children from kindergarten through the eighth grade. Due to the need for expansion, The Joy School began construction in 2012 of a new master campus and opened the doors of a new building in Fall 2013. The project, designed by RdlR, constructed by Balfour Beatty, and furnished by J. Tyler, reflects the fun-loving character and energy of The Joy School’s students. You’ll enjoy a bright color palette, reclaimed elements of their old schoolhouse, custom window shapes, and a grand staircase. The name of The Joy School stems from the hope that all students will find the joy in learning once again. We hope you find joy in their new facility as well!

PROJECT: LOCATION:

The client, a personal injury law firm based in Houston, Texas, wanted a modern and light filled workspace. To achieve this, the design team chose to replace the typical heavy wood paneling and dark interior spaces traditionally associated with law firms with open workstations, plenty of light, and non-‐traditional uses of classic materials.
The public areas highlight views of the CBD and every seated area in the office has access to natural light. The finishes chosen for the project are inspired by menswear and include pinstripes, wool, silk, and leather. Wood paneling was used to help guide visitors to the reception area and also as an accent on the workstations. Backlit 3Form resin panels were used in contrast with the wood to create a bright, fresh look.

Project Spotlight- Abel Design Group
The client asked for a large breakroom that they could use as a central gathering space and to function as both a dining area and work area. ADG’s concept includes various seating options with banquettes, as well as multiple outlets and USB ports to support this goal. Upon completion, the client was so pleased with the new space that ADG was asked to redesign its offices in Santa Fe, NM.
