CHAPTER EVENT RECAP: Student Conference 14 IIDA TX OK SC14 = SUCCESS! The future of design gathered for another year of IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter’s two-day Student Conference in Houston, celebrating learning and the profession of interior design. The IIDA Student Conference by Haworth was pleased to have Haworth as the event underwriter for the second year in a row, which helped make this event such a success.

New this year….We invited all IIDA members from students to industry to join us at a Meet and Greet graciously hosted and underwritten by The Kip Co., Herman Miller, Herman Miller Healthcare, Geiger, and Maharam at the Houston Herman Miller Showroom. It was a fun filled night with refreshments, strangers turned friends and lots of networking to kick off the conference! [DAY ONE] The day started with 32 students, from this year’s IIDA TX OK Campus Centers, kicked off the event with an early morning Design Charrette on Thursday, February 20, 2014. IIDA Houston City Center generously underwrote the Charrette, while Ziegler Cooper served as our Charrette Administrator providing a full program, client + mission, floor plans, and guidelines for the four hour Design Charrette. Jim Hanlin, Janet Rogers, Catherine Runner, and Maria Aquino of Ziegler Cooper, as well as Amy Gilmore, also spent their morning with the students, giving feedback and working through the development process.

CHAPTER UPCOMING EVENT: Leader’s Breakfast Do you have a “Passion for Work (Life)”? Are you building a body of work you can be proud of? When you channel a passion for work into something useful to others, the world around you changes! Todd Henry, founder and CEO of Accidental Creative, a company that helps creative people and teams generate brilliant ideas, will address this topic at the IIDA Leaders Breakfast in Houston on Tuesday, September 23rd. In his talk, you will learn a practical process for identifying personal and organizational passion areas, and a framework for applying them to the work you're already doing. Additionally, you’ll understand why so many people and teams get stuck in a place of mediocrity, and how to avoid these common ruts and pitfalls so that you can unleash your best work.

Mr. Henry regularly speaks and consults with companies, both large and small, about how to develop practices and systems that lead to everyday brilliance. Todd’s work has been featured by Fast Company, Fortune, Forbes, HBR.org, US News & World Report, and many other major media outlets.

Todd’s first book, The Accidental Creative: How To Be Brilliant at a Moment’s Notice (July 2011) offers strategies for how to thrive in the creative marketplace and has been called “one of the best books to date on how to structure your ideas, and manage the creative process and work that comes out of it” by Jack Covert, author of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time and founder of 800-CEO-READ.

His latest book, Die Empty: Unleash Your Best Work Every Day (September 2013,) Seth Godin called, "One of the best books of the year. Passionate, practical and powerful, Todd will help you do more and do it better, starting right now." The Texas Oklahoma Chapter of the International Interior Design Association will host its annual Leaders Breakfast at the Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria. The proceeds from the event benefit the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Education Fund which offers grants to Interior Design students within Texas and Oklahoma. Additional information is available on IIDA’s website, www.iida.org. For tickets to the event and more information, please contact the Chapter Administrator at 214-880-1511 or chapter@iida-tx-ok.org.

Please find below a quick reference and reminder for the following items: Exam Schedule, Fees, Dates + Deadlines, Preparing for the Exam, IIDA TX OK Study Course, Resources. **NOTE: IIDA TXOK Chapter’s next NCIDQ Study Course begins in July 2014.** NCIDQ SPRING 2014 SCHEDULE: http://www.ncidq.org/Exam/Schedule.aspx This schedule only reflects times for the Practicum exam section. If you are taking the IDFX or IDPX computer-delivered exams, your schedule is determined based on the appointment time(s) you reserved. Spring 2014 Examination Schedule -- April 5, 2014 Saturday, April 5, 2014 Practicum, Part A: 8 a.m. - 12:30 a.m. Lunch Break: 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Practicum, Parts B & C: 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. All times must include time to check in and assign seats to candidates, and for a mandatory instruction period. You must be present for the instructions in order to take the exam. We recommend you arrive 15 minutes early to be prepared. Because the number of candidates at each test location varies, actual exam start times for the exam sections will also vary. For more information about test day, read the Practicum Guide. Lunch is NOT provided. Your proctor will designate a break area (if one is available) in the testing facility. FEES: http://www.ncidq.org/Exam/Fees.aspx Budgeting for the exam is a crucial step that many don’t think about until they have to input their credit card number! Although some are lucky enough that their firm reimburses for the NCIDQ exam when passed, you still may need to be able to cover the costs upfront. Here is a list of anticipated costs and expenses for which I saved over the course of a year, in order to ensure that I could pay for my exam and study materials. A full list of NCIDQ fees is also located on the NCIDQ Exam website.
