DALLAS FORT WORTH CITY CENTER

2013 Wrap Up Dallas-Fort Worth has been very active this past year and things are only going to get bigger and better in 2014! Through programs like networking events, CEUs and project tours, we have provided incredible opportunities to our members. Kicking off a series of fall events, we joined with CoreNet Young Professionals to host a “Roaring Twenties” cocktail social. The event brought together the design profession and the real estate industry and resulted in new relationships. Thanks to Steelcase, Tandus, Corgan, BKM, and Shahan and Son for making this co-hosted event a great success!

In early October, we opened our doors to members and non-members at Community Brewery for our annual membership drive. This year, we were able to share the value of IIDA with over 60 designers and students as well as try out some locally made drinks and eats. Only a few weeks later we gathered at Haworth for a CEU on Open Plan Environments, hosted by USG. With the increase in CEU hours required for registered designers, we will be providing 5 CEUs by the end of February. We also completed our third annual ZeroLandfill DFW upcycling event. For two consecutive weeks, we collected and upcycled over 1,500 pounds of unwanted materials from the design community to the public. With the continuous support from TX Carpet Recycling and the design community, we have been able to divert close to 75,000 lbs from the landfill over the last three years.

In addition to networking, CEUs and sustainability efforts, we joined forces with HDR for a project tour of their recently completed patient tower and expansion at the Baylor Regional Medical Center in Grapevine. The evening was filled with great conversation and would not have been such a success without our underwriters, Armstrong and Dupont Corian.

2014 Calendar Preview

We recently concluded a great CEU series sponsored by Global which featured speaker Paul Bates with UL Environments. Check out the next page for a list of upcoming events including the annual IIDA Forum tour which will be about “Brand Endurance, Brand Equality and Brand Excellence”. We also have a couple premier events you can’t miss such as our ‘Night at the Museums’ in March with tours of both the Kimball expansion and the Modern and the ‘Lavish’ design competition and auction which will take place in April. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook for more event information. NCIDQ Update The new NCIDQ format began this fall during the October exam. With the new format, you now take Section 1 and 2 at a testing center. Section III (practicum) is still a hand drawn and hand graded exam, hence the 10-14 painful weeks of waiting for your results. The IIDA sponsored prep class is an excellent format to prepare you for all 3 sections of the exam. The 11 week class is offered twice a year, and 14 students participated in the last class. The results tend to be very favorable when you take the class versus studying on your own. Students who participate in the class will hear from multiple teachers, all well versed with NCIDQ exams and the particular subject they are teaching. They offer great advice on study tips and test taking tips as well. Participants receive a binder full of reading material, book lists, examples, homework assignments, exams, and pop tests. In addition to the classes is an all-day mock exam designed to replicate the practicum test. In total the class is 41 hours of instruction. The spring class began January 13th, and has 18 students this year. Keep a look out on the IIDA TX|OK website for information on the next class which will begin in late summer. LEED Courses IIDA does not offer LEED prep courses, but we would like to recommend the Collin College Green Building Certification Training (INDS 1375). The course is taught by Deborah Fuller and covers the essentials to become a Green Associate.
