A WORD FROM OUR DIRECTOR

DIRECTOR ELECT Kressia Rodriguez English + Assoc. krodriguez@englisharchitects.com

In July, the 2016-2017 Chapter Board members were graciously hosted by Studio TK and Teknion for a 4-day orientation retreat in Raleigh, North Carolina where we discussed new opportunities and synergies for IIDA to increase value for our members and elevate the interior design profession.

The beginning of fall is just around the corner and we cannot wait for you to see what the coming year has in store for our Houston City Center! We have already kicked off our first event, but have much more happening this fall from months of planning and preparation. This is always an exciting time for IIDA because it symbolizes the beginning of a new service year with new opportunities.

We’re ready to hit the ground running with a packed couple of months in the fall from participating in Leaders Breakfast on September 13 followed by our Membership Social on September 22. Not to mention, we have moved our ZeroLandfill to the fall in order to serve our industry better from firms cleaning up their libraries to make room for new product launches, and students gearing up for their second semester projects. To top it off, plans are well underway for an incredible IIDA Art & Artifacts: Versailles: A Royal Affair. The event is going to be held on Friday, October 14 at one of the most sought after venues in Houston, The Bell Tower on 34th. In honor of the Garden of Versailles, the design competition this year is to capture a moment in nature through photography. It’s no surprise that the Houston City Center Council has already started planning a remarkable schedule of events for 2016-2017 as we continue to provide value and inspiration. Last year, we teamed up with Modern Luxury Interiors to bring a new experience known as Chef’s Night Out. The event was such a success that we cannot wait to partner with Modern Luxury again on the second annual Chef’s Night Out in addition to exploring more synergies with other organizations to bring value to our members and sponsors. With all this excitement, I know this year is going to be one to remember. And with our amazing underwriters and volunteers, we could not have all these opportunities and successes without your support. On behalf of the IIDA Houston City Center Council, we thank you for your time and support and we look forward to seeing you at our events! Cheers,

PRODUCT RUNWAY RECAP Produced by the IIDA Houston City Center’s Community Service Chairs: Kristina Lopez of Kimball Office and Jennifer Brugliera of Koroseal, 04/22/16 marked the 8th Annual IIDA Product Runway Fashion Show in Houston. This year’s event was judged by an incredible panel of experts: Professor of Fashion Design at Houston Community College, Vi Hua; Owner & Principal artist at Henry Membreno Studios, Henry Membreno; Principal at Skyline Art Services, Louise Nicholson Carter; Senior Editor of Houston Magazine, Ray Dennison Bio; and Michelle Maresh, Publisher of Houston Design Resources Magazine. IIDA Product Runway 2016 attracted media coverage from Modern Luxury, and Houston Design Resources Magazine, among others, and was attended by nearly 1,400 people. 19 teams competed in this year’s Product Runway competition, all of which consisted of local interior design and architecture professionals and interior design students. With this year’s theme: Avant Art, each team was assigned a specific art movement with a correlating artist, as well as a piece of work from their assigned artist depicting a true representation of that particular movement. The majority of each team’s completed garment was made of their hard and soft goods and are meant to be as close to the team’s assigned art movement and artist as possible. The assigned artist and image served as an abstract design inspiration to the teams. The garments were handmade by the team members themselves and were created using architectural finish materials such as glass, tile, carpet and wood that were assigned to each team. The final garment entries were showcased in a runway performance by each team’s model, on a 150’ long elevated runway at Bayou Music Center. The impressive stage design emphasized the theme of the evening with 20 individually handcrafted paintings, created by Daphne Yuanidis, Judith Uzcategui, Diana Galva and Miguel Avila. Each of the artists created five of their own interpretations of the 20 art movements that the teams were given as their challenge. They worked closely with Skyline Art Services for all the wrapping and framing of each painting, as well as with Harvey Builders, who helped construct the panels that the paintings hung on the night of the show. All the paintings were made available for purchase a week before the show, as well as to all the attendees the night of the event. Some of the artwork is still available for purchase. For more information, please contact iidarunway@gmail.com. And of course, there’s always technology challenges. This year we had two glitches which impacted awards the night of the event. The Crowd Favorite voting site crashed (apparently we had a lot of voting going on) and the Most Philanthropic award through the Greater Giving website did not update accurately and in time for the event. After-event awards were given to make up for the untimely updates, and we are working with the live sites to ensure that technology does not get the best of us next year. This years final donations will benefit the Houston furniture Bank as, well as TAID and the IIDA Education Foundation. We proudly presented a check of $25,000 to the Houston Furniture Bank which has helped thousands of families by providing them with the necessary furnishings to create a home that improves their overall living condition, and helps elevate their personal pride and dignity.
