Issue 2020-01

Representative’s Corner My thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. IICA has a tremendous history and list of accomplishments. It is an honour to continue the mission to advance agricultural development and rural well-being in all member states, including Canada. We have achieved much in my first three months. I look forward to working with all of you, to leading the Canadian delegation, and fostering sector collaboration across the Americas.

Rural Woman Photographic Exhibition IICA Canada, in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada, recently showcased a photographic exhibition during International Development Week, called "The Soul of the Rurality in Latin America and the Caribbean." The exhibition compiles over 28 images and statistics offering visitors the opportunity to explore the reality of rural women in Argentina, Brazil, Guatemala and Jamaica. The photographic exhibition is part of IICA's commitment to stimulate and contribute to the creation of solid and long-term public policies that benefit the women who live in rural areas. Developed through a joint effort with VOGUE Brazil and IICA, the travelling photographic exhibition has been shown successfully

in San José, Costa Rica; São Paulo, Brazil; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Madrid, Spain; and Washington D.C., in the U.S. In commemoration of International women's day, the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum will be hosting the exhibition in its Learning Centre from March 8, 2020, until the spring.

“Our mission is to encourage, promote and support Member States in their efforts to achieve agricultural development and rural well-being through international technical cooperation of excellence. “

Agreements, strategy to strengthen stakeholder’s engagement

Since joining IICA last November, Dr. JeanCharles Le Vallée, IICA’s Canada new Country Representative, has been strengthening relations with the diplomatic corp of IICA’s member countries. The Delegation is exploring the needs of member countries to integrate efforts with our 34 offices in LAC countries to offer technical cooperation and collaboration in projects related to international trade, food safety and agricultural health, the bioeconomy, rural development and family farming, climate change, gender and youth, and innovation technologies.

Last November 2019, in San Jose Costa Rica, IICA signed an agreement with 4H which aims to support international technical cooperation to build leadership as well as integrate youth into agricultural development in the hemisphere while strengthening their communities. On December 5, 2019, IICA Canada signed an MOU with l’Union des producteurs agricolesDéveloppement International (UPA DI) to prepare and execute collaborative projects to accelerate agricultural and rural development in the Americas with an initial focus on Haiti.
