FOOTBALL SUCCESS FOR ASHCOTT SCHOOL Congratulations to the Ashcott School football team who are still unbeaten in the Mendip Schools’ League. After 4 matches, the Ashcott team have 12 points and are top of the league table. Well done to all of the players who have played in the matches, and a big thank you to all of those parents who have helped with transport or come along to support the team!

‘READING STARS’ EARN BOOKS FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY A group of enthusiastic Year 6 children from Ashcott Primary School have proved to be true ‘Reading Stars’ The children helped to organise the school’s Scholastic book fair which raised an impressive £565 commission to spend on new books for the school library! The Reading Stars regularly organise activities at the school, promoting reading, as well as supporting younger children with their reading each week. The children have volunteered to champion reading throughout the school and share their enthusiasm for books – clearly they have been successful, as the school’s book fair sold the highest number of books for several years!

ROMAN BANQUET AT COXLEY SCHOOL The children in Hay Class at Coxley School used their community assembly as an opportunity for parents to enjoy a Roman banquet. During the weeks preceding the event, the children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 researched some of the more unusual foods which were eaten by the Romans and planned how they would make modern equivalents. Parents were invited for a nine course tasting menu, which included parrot (roast chicken), sea urchin (mussels in a spiky shell), roasted dormice (shaped sausage meat), flamingo tongues (roasted aubergine skins), giraffe stew (vegetarian option) and the highlight which was REAL ostrich steaks! Dressed in togas, the children served their parents and other family members, who, on the whole, loved the foods on the menu (with the exception of jellyfish tentacles!). Key stage one children and Hay Class also enjoyed tasting all of the foods themselves after the event.
