SOMERDALE RAMBLERS omerdale Ramblers were formed in 1996. At that time many of the members were employees of the Cadbury chocolate factory, sadly no more. Our membership now is made up of retired Cadbury employees and many others who have joined over the 18 years of our existence. Walks are organised four weekly on Sundays, usually within a twenty mile radius of Bristol or Bath. They are led by a member of the section who would have recently completed the walk and therefore have a good knowledge of the area and any hazards that might exist.
Walk lengths vary but are usually between six and eight miles and nearly always starting and ending near a pub where a meal can be booked in advance for those who wish to eat. Lunch is not obligatory for walkers but we find that it adds to the camaraderie within the group Twice a year in spring and autumn a longer walk will be arranged for those who enjoy a full day out (usually 9 to 10 miles). From time to time short breaks are organized at home and abroad for those who would like to participate. This year for example we have organized a walking weekend in Cornwall. The dates for walks are agreed twelve months in advance and the actual walk area is set three to four weeks in advance and notified individually to members. We very rarely cancel walks because of the weather, We are recognized as a very open and friendly club and many of our members have been with us from the start. There are not many areas of South Gloucestershire, West Wiltshire and North Somerset that our group has not walked although every effort is made to ensure that our routes are varied and interesting
take part in two or three walks before they are asked to join and pay the fee. This is to allow them to confirm for themselves the suitability of the walks and the group before they make a full commitment.
