FROM THE DUG-OUT
ABRI SSABRI LAMOUCHI LAMOUCHI
Good evening as we prepare for another important home match against a very strong Fulham side. I would like to welcome Scott Parker, his players and staff as we look forward to a good game of football.
T
here is plenty at stake with every single game in this division, whether it is against the teams fighting relegation or the teams challenging to get into the Premier League. Every minute of every match requires our ultimate concentration and tonight is no different. Fulham are a side very much in the mix for promotion, like ourselves, and we all know how important a victory can be tonight against one of our rivals for those positions. But it is three points that we play for, the same as any other match, so we have to be focused on gaining the victory. Fulham have plenty of quality throughout the team and we are
aware of their threats, but I am sure they are also wary of the threats we pose and our sole focus is on what we can do on the pitch to get the three points. We have had a few games since the restart to adjust to the changes and the new way of working. We have performed well and we are getting better and it is still just as difficult without you, the supporters, here with us in the stadium. But we know you continue to be right behind us from home, your messages on social media have been inspiring for us and we want to continue fighting for you to ensure we achieve our targets. Enjoy the game, Sabri

e have made a positive start since the restart, picking up a draw and two victories in our first three games and we are all determined to keep fighting for every point available. I write these notes before our match at Derby County, and every fixture we play is massively important, regardless of who our opponents are or where they are in the league table. Last time out here, it was great to get the victory in a tough game. Bristol City are a good team with quality players and we were under pressure in parts of the game, but a resolute defensive performance kept it level and a moment of magic from Tiago settled it. As a defender, my first aim is always to keep that clean sheet. To see the lads throwing themselves
on the line for the cause and to preserve that clean sheet is fantastic and by doing that we set ourselves up to at least get a draw. We will have to be equally determined tonight to keep that clean sheet as we are all aware of Fulham’s attacking qualities. They have plenty of players with Premier League class but we also have plenty of ability in our side. We will focus on our own game, as we always do, in the belief that we will be able to secure three vital points which will help us to cement our place in the top six. It will never feel right to have empty seats in the stadium, we miss you just as much as you miss coming to watch us, but keep behind us from home and hopefully we will be able to put a smile on your face by the final whistle. A brace from Lewis Grabban and a late strike from Ryan Yates secured Nottingham Forest a vital 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town at The City Ground. A goal either side of half-time from Grabban, which took his tally for the season to 19, put daylight between Forest and their struggling visitors before Yates put the icing on the cake with a nearpost finish five minutes from time. Juninho Bacuna was shown a straight red card late on for a dangerous lunge on Nuno Da Costa, before Karlan Grant scored a penalty in the last of six minutes of stoppage time after Joe Worrall shoved Fraizer Campbell to the floor inside the box. A fantastic free-kick from Tiago Silva enhanced Nottingham Forest’s play-off credentials as The Reds beat Bristol City 1-0 at The City Ground. Silva’s moment of quality settled an otherwise scrappy contest on Trentside, but Forest won’t care about the entertainment value having earned three points which moved them back above Fulham into fourth place in the Sky Bet Championship. City’s hopes of taking anything from the game were dashed late on as experienced defender Ashley Williams was shown a straight red card for putting an arm into the face of Yuri Ribeiro. Did you see that moment in our last home game that probably sums up the players’ attitude under the expertise of Sabri Lamouchi?
I
t was the 97th minute of a gritty, almost eccentric, 1-0 win against a Bristol City side with their own ambitions to reach the play-offs. Yet there was Yuri Ribeiro, our seemingly indefatigable left-back, sprinting at full-pelt to join in a stoppage-time attack with one of those overlapping runs out of defence. Ribeiro had already been knocked to the floor when the opposition centre-half decided to take out his frustrations by aiming a forearm smash at the smallest player on the pitch. There was then that curious incident when another of our opponents got in a tangle with Ribeiro and managed to escape unpunished with a couple of kicks directly in front of the referee. And, yes, when Ribeiro started surging forwards while we were trying to hold on to

Matty Cash needed lengthy treatment for a gash to the eye after the victory over Bristol City
a one-goal lead, I must admit my mind went back to that now-famous scene of Colin Barrett motoring along the left wing against Liverpool in the European Cup and Peter Taylor grabbing Brian Clough by the hand. “Where the bloody hell is he going? Get back! Get back!” I needn’t have worried. As soon as the play had broken down, Ribeiro seemed to switch into another gear. You might have seen the clip on social media... and it’s quite something to see the speed at which he gets back, at the end of a long and exhausting match, to take up his position in defence again. A lot of players might have wanted a breather and hoped that a team-mate would be kind enough to cover. Not this lad, though. Ribeiro is rapidly emerging as one of the unsung heroes in this team and one of the best left-backs we have seen for a while in what has, for too long, been a problem position. He’s strong, he can look after himself, he has a good positional sense, he can anticipate danger and he gets up and down that wing, with the ability to play as an auxiliary left-winger.
That barnstorming run, going all the way from one penalty area to the other and then back again, also reminded me about an old line from Joe Royle, then the Manchester City manager, when a young Shaun WrightPhillips was bursting on to the scene. “He might be the smallest player but his heart fills his body,” Joe used to say. And, yes, I realise it was only one snapshot from a scrappy, stodgy game but it also tells us so much about the way Lamouchi has the players straining every sinew in that red shirt. You will have seen, for example, the black eye Matty Cash was sporting after taking a kick during the Bristol game. That was some shiner! Cash’s eyelid had been split open. He had another gash on his cheek, courtesy of a flying boot, and needed some lengthy treatment from the medics.
...WORRALL AND FIGUEIREDO HAVE FORMED A GREAT PARTNERSHIP AT THE BACK AND I KNOW OUR MANAGER IS A BIG ADMIRER OF WORRALL’S ALMOST OLD-FASHIONED ‘THOU-SHALL-NOT-PASS’ MENTALITY... Yet all our outstanding right-back wanted to do was get on with the game and, in years to come, when he looks at that scar he can remember he did his job brilliantly. Joe Worrall is another one who would give absolutely everything for this club. Joe is a brilliant leader for this team. He and Tobias Figueiredo have formed a great partnership at the back and I know our manager is a big admirer of Worrall’s almost old-fashioned ‘thou-shall-not-pass’ mentality. Ryan Yates, meanwhile, ended up with a busted nose for his troubles. Yet he also had a sunrise of a smile on his face directly after the match. Our boys will happily suffer if it means us getting three points, it seems. “We will suffer but, to play against us, the opposition will suffer more,” was a great quote from Sabri afterwards. @DTathletic

I
t is a basic human instinct to deal with the threat of distraction by preparing to deal with the threat of distraction. When asked to ‘start revising’, the innate teenage response is to spend hours - possibly days - preparing a minutely constructed revision timetable, ornately decorated and planned down to the detail of snack times and genre of biscuits to be consumed, rather than actually revising. Anything to distract from the brass tacks of actually doing some work. Distraction is a normal state of being. One of literature’s most famous plays arguably boils down to a young man simply spending months in a permanent state of distraction rather than actually facing up to the task of avenging his murdered father. Prince Hamlet even indulges his distracted state of mind by playing tricks on old friends Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern, to the degree of the former observing that, ‘He [Hamlet] does confess he feels himself distracted’. All of which is to say that with the passing of two home games now under everyone’s belt and the oddness of it all slowly fading, how easy it is to be distracted when watching at home is something that has perhaps taken us all by surprise. While distractions still exist when watching in a ground, they are easier to ignore. Sure, you might feel in need of refreshment from time to time but the faff of edging along the row while everyone begrudgingly stands to allow you to squeeze by tends to negate the hunger or thirst. Of course, you could wait for half-time before taking your place in the refreshments queue but you then run the risk of still being stood there deep into the second-half - and
07.07.2020

NOTTINGHAM FOREST v s FULHA M
Don’t be distracted from the action by nipping to the fridge too often or indulging in social media debates
you’d still have the ‘gingerly edging along the row’ faff to face on your return. Yet at home, from the comfort of your favourite chair, snacking opportunities are maximised without constraint. In fact, the only barrier between the biscuit jar and kettle is the proximity of the kitchen from your chosen viewing location, which for most of us is unlikely to be more than ten steps. There is no queue or endless stream of people pushing past you; the only variable in the quantity of food and drink you stuff into your face while watching Forest on TV is how well (or poorly) your fridge is stocked. Perhaps an even larger threat to your focus on the game is social media. During a lull, the temptation to scroll through your chosen platform to check whether other people seem to be watching the same game
as you, is indeed great. You may suspect that player x is playing poorly or that player y is having their best game yet, or even that the referee has got that utterly wrong, but without someone next to you in the crowd to confirm it, you remain invalidated. Social media offers us confirmation and another distraction from the action. With such distractions around us, it is all too easy to miss Yuri Ribeiro running up and down the pitch at full pelt like Roadrunner being chased by a particularly vicious coyote. Or to go and make a brew/grab another can from the fridge while Tiago Silva lines up a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. While it might be slightly harder to maintain focus when sat at home, we must guard against such distractions otherwise we run the risk of missing the really good stuff.

SEAT PITCH Nottingham Forest News editor Lee Clarke muses on a Forest team full of heart, determination and resilience in their quest to reach the Premier League...
T
here’s a video doing the rounds on social media of Yuri Ribeiro sprinting back into position after bombing forward in the 97th minute of our win over Bristol City. Watch it and you instantly hear the Benny Hill theme tune and you’d be forgiven for thinking that a cute editor had made the clip seem faster than real time. This is Ribeiro every day in training though according to Matty Cash and it epitomises exactly why Nottingham Forest are quietly slipping under the radar in their quest to reach the Premier League. Pin Sabri Lamouchi down for an honest assessment of 2019-20 and he’d probably agree that some of Forest’s performances haven’t quite been to his acquired taste. Occasionally after three points a grounded Frenchman will focus on the improvement of performances to go alongside a win - he is a perfectionist after all.
What his team has occasionally lacked in style, however, they have more than made up for in heart, determination and resilience to leave the pitch with three points. What Lamouchi has instilled within the dressing room at this football club shouldn’t be underestimated. For years supporters have waited for a team full of players who would run through brick walls for their manager. We’ve had a handful; Ben Osborn, Chris Cohen and Eric Lichaj immediately spring to mind, but when was the last time we had a team full of them? The back-five looks settled. Cash looked like he’d been 12 rounds with Carl Froch after an altercation with Andi Weimann’s boot but he wasn’t going to be forced off in a million years. Tobias Figueiredo and Joe Worrall are developing a great rapport and I’m convinced that if you tossed the pair a

breeze block, they’d still head the thing back at you! Ribeiro for me stands out as a player who could be an outside bet for Player of the Season. Against the Robins he was simply outstanding. The poor lad gets kicked from a pillar to a post in each game he plays and I personally think it’s because opposition players can’t be bothered to keep running after him. He epitomised more than anyone what Forest have been about this season. Teams might be better than us over the course of 90 minutes, but I’d be amazed if anyone runs further than us over the course of a game.
At 23, Ribeiro could go down as one of the most astute signings the club has ever made, after arriving last summer. He didn’t start the season as a regular in the team but I’m struggling to think of one game this campaign where he hasn’t performed well. What I like about the Portuguese warrior is that nothing seems to faze him. When Benik Afobe and Famara Diedhiou were queuing up from a Jamie Paterson cross last week it seems for all the world one of them was about to equalise. Ribeiro had other ideas though. Left-back is an area that has haunted Forest for years but with the new kid on the block they’ve finally hit the jackpot.

ho scored our first league goal under Brian Clough? Neil Martin has the notable honour of the first of over 1,500 goals we scored in ‘The Great Man’s reign’. His header at White Hart Lane gave us a shock 1-0 FA Cup third-round replay victory against Spurs on 8th January 1975. However, the first league goal came three days later when we visited tonight’s opponents, Fulham. It requires an expert search through the nooks and crannies of YouTube, but hiding in cyberspace is Barry Butlin’s winner at Craven Cottage. Latching onto a direct through ball, he carefully lifts the ball over Peter Mellor in the Fulham goal to give us back-to-back 1-0 triumphs in the capital. £2.90 got our travelling supporters a second class return into St Pancras on “Forestrail” that day. As the advert in these pages proclaimed: “TRAVEL IN SAFETY, COMFORT AND STYLE”.
Fancy a more upmarket journey instead? An extra 50 new pence would get you in the posh first-class seats. Unfortunately, however, it was seemingly too complicated for British Rail to get us anywhere near Putney rail station, so you had to make your own way across the capital and back again for the 6pm return to Nottingham. At that stage, Cloughie’s appointment seemed inspired and 500 fans purchased new season tickets. However, it is largely forgotten that we then didn’t win in the next 15 matches. Indeed, by April Fool’s Day 1975 we were just three points ahead of the drop zone in 16th. George Lyall’s goal edged us past Sheffield Wednesday that day and the threat of Division Three football was averted - as was an even more far-fetched storyline for ‘I Believe In Miracles’. Remarkably, we played Fulham five times in Cloughie’s first nine matches in January and February 1975 - and we’d also played them in December 1974 too.

Butlin’s winner at Craven Cottage in the league was followed by an FA Cup fourthround tie which was postponed at the first attempt due to rain on the banks of the Thames. We were on top in the goalless draw the following Tuesday but couldn’t force the winner and it was back to the banks of the Trent the following Monday. Over 25,000 saw Martin’s second-half equaliser take the match to extra-time, after John Dowie opened the scoring for Fulham in the first-half. Extra-time still couldn’t separate the sides and, just two days later, it was back to Craven Cottage for a repeat of the scoring: this time Alan Slough in the first-half for Fulham; equalised by a John Robertson free-kick in the second; then no further scoring in extra-time. If you’re still keeping track, we were now into a fourth cup tie - this time at The City Ground - in a sequence of fixtures that makes this season’s COVID-19 schedule seem decidedly leisurely. Tantalisingly, the “Forestrail” times to Liverpool for the FA Cup fifth-round tie at Everton were now being advertised as that match was scheduled for the following weekend. Less tantalising was the addition of a British Rail cold buffet for those willing to fork out the £6 first-class fare. For the third match in succession it was Fulham who took the lead in the first half when Viv Busby scored from Jimmy Conway’s cross. Crucially, in the second-half, Busby then rounded John Middleton to finally put two goals between the sides and, although Chapman pulled a goal back, it was Fulham heading for Merseyside. Fulham won 2-1 at Goodison Park and went all the way to the final before losing 2-0 to West Ham. To reach Wembley was a notable achievement as The Cottagers only finished ninth in the Second Division, four points ahead of us in 16th. All told, from December 1974 to January 1977, we played Fulham ten times. Six were drawn and Fulham’s sole success was that FA Cup victory here. Curiously, it was then 22 years until our paths crossed again in the second tier.

OPPOSITION
FULHAM Owner: Shahid Khan Manager: Scott Parker | Stadium: Craven Cottage Top scorer: Aleksandar Mitrovic (23 goals) Last time out vs Forest: Fulham 1-2 Forest (Saturday 24th August, 2019 – Championship) Fulham are right in the mix for a Premier League return, but their hopes of an automatic spot took a blow after the restart with defeats against their rivals for promotion. A 2-0 home loss against West London rivals Brentford set them back, before a crushing 3-0 defeat away to Leeds has seen the gap to the top two widen. A retrospective red card for top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic added insult to injury for The Whites with the frontman missing for tonight’s game, and manager Scott Parker is keen to try and build some momentum again after a poor re-start. He said: “We dust ourselves down as the games come thick and fast. There is no time to mope around, but there is time to analyse and look at where we need to get better. “The performances have been pleasing, so we need to replicate that and improve on little elements. “We need to pick up some momentum. Before lockdown, I felt that the momentum was firmly with us, we were in the
ascendency and we were in a good place. Coming back from the lockdown, coming back to two defeats was not ideal and I am disappointed in that sense. But we need to pick up results, we have a few games left and we need to build that momentum again for the remaining part of the season.” Fulham have been in the mix for promotion all season and will be hoping to get back into form to challenge the top two or go into the play-offs in good shape. They have had to fare without Mitrovic for the last two matches, with tonight’s game the third of his three-match ban. But The Cottagers have plenty of attackers to choose from in his absence, with Anthony Knockaert, Bobby Decordova-Reid and Ivan Cavaleiro among their potential frontline options.

Ahead of this evening’s match, we take a look at the spine of Scott Parker’s Fulham side…
BOBBY DECORDOVA-REID
Bobby Decordova-Reid joined Fulham initially on loan at the start of the season, before making his move permanent in January. The 27-year-old Jamaican international started out in the youth ranks at Bristol City and went on to feature more than 150 times for The Robins, helping them to promotion from League One and scoring a career-best 19 league goals in the 2017-18 season. That form saw him controversially join rivals Cardiff City, who had just been promoted to the Premier League, before he switched to Fulham ahead of this campaign.
TOM CAIRNEY
Club captain Tom Cairney has been an integral figure at the club since joining in 2015. Born in Nottingham, the 29-year-old started out at Hull City and made his Premier League debut in January 2010. He went on to join Blackburn Rovers before switching to Fulham, where he has made more than 185 league appearances. He was made captain in 2016-17 and scored the only goal of the play-off final in 2018 to secure promotion to the Premier League. The Scotland international has twice been named in the PFA Team of the Year and continues to be a top performer at this level.
MICHAEL HECTOR
Michael Hector has been a key performer in defence for Fulham since joining in January, forming a partnership with Tim Ream. The Jamaican international has finally settled after several loan spells, firstly from Reading and then from Chelsea. The 27-year-old started out with The Royals, having loan spells in the local nonleague scene as well as with Cheltenham and Aberdeen, before establishing himself in the side in 2014-15. He moved to Chelsea the following season, before being loaned back to Reading, and went on to have further temporary spells at Frankfurt, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday before his switch to The Cottagers.

Slovakian goalkeeper Marek Rodak has established himself as Fulham’s number one this season after impressive loan spells in the EFL. The 23-year-old joined Fulham as a youngster, moving from MFK Kosice in his native country in 2013, and had his first taste of senior football in loan spells in non-league with Farnborough and Welling United. A stint at Accrington Stanley was followed by two loan spells at Rotherham, where he made 80 league appearances and helped them to League One play-off success. He took his firstteam chance in October this season and hasn’t looked back since.

E P S O VIEW OOOPPOSITION O I T N V P I I P OPPOSITION VIEW W P O S I T I O N VIEW Ahead of this evening’s game at The City Ground, FR caught up with Alan Smith from football.london to get the lowdown on The Cottagers… FR: Has Fulham’s season met expectations so far? Alan Smith: The goal back in August was promotion but the fact the top two now appear out of reach leaves it all on a knife edge. Fail to go up and the campaign will have been a failure. This is a really good squad and there have been patches where the performance level has been where expected, but results have been erratic. After winning four on the bounce in November, they lost three in a row and since then they have failed to win three in succession again. A better run than that is required in the run-in. FR: How have you rated Scott Parker’s time as manager? AS: It is all so finely poised it is unfair to evaluate until the end of the campaign. If Fulham go up then he would be hailed as a huge success, if they fall short then all bets are off. FR: What is the overall mood around the club at the minute? AS: Entering the restart there was still a belief that West Brom or Leeds could be hauled in but the late defeat to Brentford was a blow and the mood was darkened further by a thrashing away to Leeds last weekend.
Fulham captain Tom Cairney has been an influential figure in The Cottagers’ midfield

Anthony Knockaert is a threat from wide areas for Fulham
Winning away to QPR on Tuesday night was galvanising, though with six games to go time is running out. FR: Do you feel that the automatic promotion spots are now out of reach? AS: If it was any other division than the Championship, yes. West Brom, or less likely Leeds, will need to completely fall apart for that to happen but until it is impossible Parker will make sure his players believe they can do it. Plus, they are still probably two wins from confirming a play-off spot. FR: How crucial will the absence of Aleksandar Mitrovic be? AS: A massive blow. The division’s joint-top scorer, level with Brentford’s Ollie Watkins on 23, still has a reputation for being a tad
WINNING AWAY TO QPR ON TUESDAY NIGHT WAS GALVANISING, THOUGH WITH SIX GAMES TO GO TIME IS RUNNING OUT hot-headed but he has scored more than 40 per cent of Fulham’s total and no one else has made it into double figures. FR: Who are Fulham’s key players going to be? AS: Tom Cairney, the captain and next top scorer after Mitrovic, is often given some special attention by opponents but keep an eye out for Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro from wide areas.

BRENNAN B R E N N A N JJOHNSON OHNSON The 2019-20 season has been a memorable one for many reasons, but for Brennan Johnson it will live long in the memory as his breakthrough campaign. The academy graduate made his debut in the opening game of the season and secured his first league start at Sheffield Wednesday in the first game after the restart. FR spoke with the Welsh youngster to talk about making an impact and learning from the experienced pros…
FR: How was it making your first league start? Brennan Johnson: It was a great experience, I really enjoyed it. It is fantastic that the manager showed his trust and support to start me and it was a good experience. It was a tough game, Sheffield Wednesday are a strong team but for the first game back it was good. FR: It was the first game back after the break, how did you find the lockdown period? BJ: It was tough as training on your own is hard, you just have to keep yourself motivated to do stuff every day. It was just training in the gym or going for a run, it was tough so it was nice to get that over with and get back in to play. It was hard to selfmotivate yourself sometimes, and it was hard not seeing the lads too, but we are all back now and it is great.
FR: How have you viewed the season overall, your breakthrough campaign? BJ: It has been a good season. I didn’t expect to play in the first game of 201920 but it has been a term full of ups and downs. I have been playing some weeks and then I haven’t been involved. I have had to motivate myself a lot, going in between teams, but every time I have got out there has been really good. I have played against some really challenging teams so it has been a superb season overall. FR: What has the manager said to you about involving you in the squad? BJ: He said that he trusts me to play and he has confidence in me. He knows the importance of this stage of the league too, so I am really happy that he has given me the chance to play at this crucial period. I know that I am not going to play every game in the run-in, as we have a lot of good

players and experienced players, but every opportunity that I get to go out there I will give it my best and hopefully we can achieve it all together. FR: Yourself and Alex Mighten are two players who have really stepped up this season, it must be encouraging to see young players continue to be given a chance at this club? BJ: Definitely. Me and Alex in particular, the gaffer has really trusted us. He knows how we play and he hasn’t tried to change us, he just tells us to play our game and him knowing that and utilising us is really good. There are plenty of other players coming through the ranks as well and they have had the chance to train with the first-team too. FR: How much have the squad’s senior players helped you? BJ: They have been really good. There are lots of experienced players here and they are all talking to us during the games and in training day-to-day. We have a really exceptional team, everyone is close and if you have any questions they are free to talk all the time, so it has been really helpful. ‘Daws’, ‘Watto’ and ‘Grabbs’ have been great for me personally. During the games, they have been talking to me and telling me little things to help me. FR: Without the crowds being there, it is something we notice how much the players talk to each other… BJ: When there is no crowd, it is a lot easier to talk, but at the same time the other team can hear it too. This team is very vocal and that can only help me and the team. FR: How have you found it without the supporters in the stands? BJ: For me, it is not too strange as I have played in plenty of empty stadiums with the Under-23s. But it is the things like having the crowd get right behind you, which our fans do really well, that you miss. It is tough but you have to motivate each other, we know we have such a good chance so we are all motivating ourselves.
FR: You were involved in the first two games after the restart but then dropped out, do you find that frustrating? BJ: Yes but we have such a strong squad. It is disappointing not being involved but I have to keep training well, it is tough because we don’t have a lot of time to train inbetween games. Whenever I get my chance, I just need to keep training hard and when that opportunity comes I need to take it. It is something that I have to deal with. The gaffer said that there are loads of games and that everyone is needed. I was needed for those first two outings and when my time comes again I will hopefully be able to take it. FR: How is the mood overall in the squad? BJ: It is good, everyone is keeping their feet on the ground knowing that it is one game at a time. We have had tough games so far and we can only focus on the next fixture. FR: The run-in pits us against teams around us in the league table… BJ: Yes it is a tough finish. There are quite a few teams in the mix but we are confident in how we play and being able to get results. We have to take each game as it comes but everyone is confident at the same time, and we know that we have such a good chance and hopefully we can take it.

oth teams were hoping to improve on disappointing mid-table positions when we met here 45 seasons ago. On the fringes of the promotion race the previous season, we were breaking even in 10th place with 20 points from as many games. Fulham, meanwhile, were fading fast after a good start, dropping from second to 15th over the previous 10 games. The programme cover reflected the previous season’s change to the now-famous tree crest. It was featured - complete with a copyright symbol to deter its misuse - next to an action shot from the recent game against York City, with its stylised lettering also splashed across the top third of the cover. Alongside the usual pen pictures and team group in the three pages devoted to The Cottagers, the editorial expressed surprise at the team’s decline, while noticing the recent goalscoring form of skipper Alan Mullery. Ken Smales used the Platform column to bemoan our not having been given a home game on Boxing Day for three years and felt the club’s requests were being ignored by the Football League’s computer. He was wary of clashes with international cricket at Trent Bridge and the greater chance of the city’s clubs having home cup ties on the same day since Notts had joined us in Division Two.
Action photos from the York game showed Ian Bowyer scoring and Barry Butlin heading over in our 2-1 win. Also pictured were Liam O’Kane and Grenville Morris, the former having recently passed the latter’s tally of 16 international caps. Elsewhere, Peter Tozer’s ‘More Programme Memories’ page looked at two fog-affected games in the inter-war years, while assistant secretary Paul White described how young would-be footballers went about gaining trials at professional clubs. Our own young players had overcome Northfield Juniors after a replay in the FA Youth Cup, future European Cup-winner Bryn Gunn featuring in both. With Christmas approaching, the club shop tempted present-buyers with the likes of gonks (another sign we were in the 1970s) at £1.20, “tee shirts” from a pound, and something called “Good News, Bad News”, which - whatever on earth it was - cost 40p. Unsurprisingly, neither team was able to prevail on the day, Neil Martin scoring for us and Rod Belfitt for Fulham. Within just a few weeks, though, we had won the return game 1-0 and Fulham had scraped past us at the fourth attempt on their way to the FA Cup final. By then, of course, we had lost the Notts game 2-0 (Bad News), leading to Brian Clough’s arrival - definitely Good News.

CLASSIC C L A S S I C CCAMPAIGNS AMPAIGNS
Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS selects some post-war Fulham ‘Classic Campaigns’.
1974-75
Alec Stock managed Fulham to the FA Cup final for the first and only time in 1974-75. They were early Second Division leaders, also beating holders Wolves and West Ham in the League Cup, but then slipped to a mid-table position. Ex-England stars Bobby Moore and Alan Mullery were key figures as Fulham defeated Hull City 1-0, Nottingham Forest 2-1, Everton 2-1, Carlisle 1-0 and Birmingham 1-0 in the FA Cup, before losing 2-0 to West Ham in the Wembley final: Peter Mellor, John Cutbush, John Lacy, Bobby Moore, John Fraser, Alan Mullery, Jimmy Conway, Alan Slough, John Mitchell, Viv Busby, Les Barrett.
1981-82
Gordon Davies scored 24 goals as Fulham won promotion in 1981-82. Malcolm Macdonald’s side won just one of their first four games but soared to the top of the Third Division after a 14-match unbeaten run, including 4-1 wins over Swindon and Wimbledon. Kevin Lock returned to defence and Fulham maintained their challenge, also scoring four goals past Carlisle and Bristol Rovers. The Cottagers clinched promotion as skipper Roger Brown’s goal secured a 1-1 draw at home to rivals Lincoln in the last match of the season. Other stars were Dean Coney, Tony Gale, Peter O’Sullivan, Sean O’Driscoll, Gerry Peyton and Les Strong.
1982-83
Ray Houghton debuted in Fulham ’s unlikely promotion push in 1982-8 3
Fulham were unlucky not to win promotion to the top-flight in 1982-83. Ray Houghton made his debut as The Cottagers began with a 1-1 draw at home to Rotherham and were unbeaten in their first six matches. Malcolm Macdonald’s young side went top of the Second Division with a 3-1 win at home to Burnley in October, remaining in the promotion frame until the final month of the season. A 1-0 defeat by rivals Leicester in April was a crucial turning point, but the real drama occurred in the final match at Derby when Fulham lost 1-0 after a pitch invasion and missed promotion by one point. Six players were ever-present.

1996-97
Mick Conroy scored 21 goals as Fulham won promotion in 1996-97. New manager Micky Adams signed Danny Cullip, Darren Freeman and Paul Watson during the summer and Fulham went top of the Third Division after winning six of their opening seven games. Richard Carpenter scored on his debut as Fulham triumphed 2-0 at Darlington, also netting as they won 6-0 in the return fixture in January. The away record was the best in the club’s history and Fulham remained in the promotion frame for the rest of the campaign. They clinched Second Division status with a 0-0 draw at Mansfield, finishing level on points with Wigan.
1998-99
Kevin Keegan guided Fulham to the Second Division title in 1998-99. The Cottagers had missed out in the play-offs the previous season but lost just two of their first 17 matches, also beating Southampton in the League Cup. Geoff Horsfield was signed from Halifax Town in October and scored on his debut in a 4-1 win over promotion rivals Walsall. Fulham went top with a 1-0 win at Preston in December, then beat Southampton and Aston Villa en route to the FA Cup fifth round. They clinched promotion with a 3-0 victory at home to Gillingham and won the title with a club record 101 points. Kevin Keegan then left to manage England.
2000-01
Louis Saha scored 27 times as Fulham won the First Division title in 2000-01. Jean Tigana replaced Paul Bracewell as manager and recruited fellow Frenchmen Saha, Fabrice Fernandes and Alain Goma. Fulham won their opening 11 matches, with Saha grabbing a hat-trick in a 5-1 win at home to Barnsley, and reached the League Cup fifth round. They lost just once in the first half of the campaign and Barry Hayles scored three times in a 5-0 win over Watford on Boxing Day. Fulham clinched promotion to the topflight for the first time in 33 years with a 2-1 win at Huddersfield and won the title with 101 points.
Captain Tom Cairney’s goal sent Fulham into the Premier League
to Jean Tigana masterminded Fulham in 2000-01 101 points and the First Division title
2017-18
Fulham regained Premier League status after an absence of four years in 2017-18. Slavisa Jokanovic’s side won just four of their opening 17 Championship games, then gained a thrilling 5-4 victory at Sheffield United. The 2-1 success at home to Barnsley just before Christmas sparked a club record 23-match unbeaten run, including a 6-0 hammering of Burton. The Cottagers soared to second place but were pipped to automatic promotion by Cardiff City after losing 3-1 at Birmingham on the final day. They beat Derby County 2-1 on aggregate in the playoff semi-final, then Tom Cairney’s goal was enough to see off Aston Villa at Wembley.
