Why study this subject?

For most of us, Film, Television and New Media are our primary sources of information, communication and entertainment. They are important channels for educational and cultural exchange and are vital to our selfexpression. Moving-image media enables us to understand and express ourselves and engage meaningfully with others. This subject equips students for a future of unimagined possibilities with highly transferable and flexible skills. Students develop valuable twenty-first century attributes including: • • • •

Critical and creative thinking skills Communication, collaboration and teamwork skills Personal and social skills Information and communication technology skills.

What do students study?

Unit 1: Students study digital photography. In doing so, they learn the practical skills involved in using a DSLR camera and taking still images that are aesthetically pleasing, construct a particular representation and appeal to a chosen target audience. They also use a professional editing program to edit their photos before compiling a photography portfolio. Additionally, students explore famous Australian photographers and their work. Students learn to analyse and appraise these iconic photos. Unit 2: Students study consumer culture and the world of advertising. They develop an understanding of persuasive devices commonly used in marketing to provide explicit and subliminal messages to audiences, while also examining the varying platforms available for advertising. Students use film language and critical literacy skills to critique advertising campaigns. They will further their filming skills and use a professional editing program such as Adobe Premiere. They learn the stages of pre-production, before designing and producing their own moving-image advertisement.

Assessment techniques include: • Curational letter • Photography portfolio • Case study investigation and written report • Advertisement treatment and storyboard • Moving image advertisement
