according to research and Markets, which claims to be the world’s largest market research resource, the global jewellery market is expected to reach us$257 billion in 2017, and to grow at a rate of 5 percent per year over the next five years. there is a lot to love about bling. Jennifer Lawrence, a frequent collaborator with Dior, stars in the brand’s Cruise 2018 campaign. The photography features stunning pieces inspired by artist Georgia O’Keeffe, “the mother of American modernism”. The actress wears a mixture of long dresses, long vests whose motifs evoke desert flowers, paired with charm necklaces, and the revisited bar jacket worn in a relaxed manner, with trousers and a white shirt. Olivier Lapidus’s first creations as the new Artistic Director for Lanvin received mixed reviews in Paris in September. Fashionista described them as “a collection filled with bland black dresses, simple suiting that could be a retail staple during any season and, most notably, lots and lots of logos. Much like Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi and Gucci, Lapidus likely made a play for the all-important millennial shoppers by covering some slinky, short dresses in a print reading ‘Lanvin’.” Said The Guardian: “Lanvin’s show started simply, with the model Binx Walton wearing a black dress with a scooped, dropped back, her sleek, low ponytail wrapped in silver netting. But the looks that followed tended towards form-fitting silhouettes and leg-baring minis.” Lapidus said he hoped that by offering short hemlines, while many other brands were producing long ones, he would bring youth and freshness to Lanvin. This, he hoped, would appeal to millennials “because they influence the world. So this is a very interesting moment to take very old things and twist them and make them new.”

LouIs VuItton returns home Louis Vuitton opened the Maison Louis Vuitton Vendôme on October 4. Located at 2 Place Vendôme, and newly designed and reinstated by architect Peter Marino, the opening marks the house’s grand return to where its story began more than 160 years ago, when a young Louis Vuitton opened his first store. Travel goods, fashion and jewellery have been part of Place Vendôme and its neighbourhood for over 300 years. It was in these streets that Louis learned his craft and where he founded his first store in 1854. The new Louis Vuitton Maison reunites Place Vendôme and the House’s traditional métiers. Couture, ready-to-wear, jewellery, watchmaking, leather goods, shoes, fragrances, accessories, and artisanal workshops are all brought together in one place.

Waight Keller presented her Spring 2018 Givenchy collection at Paris Fashion Week. “Gone are the flowy dresses of Waight Keller’s Chloé days,” Vogue went on. “At Givenchy, she opened the show with a tailored, double-breasted jacket with strong shoulders and a cinched waist. “Though the collection, on the whole, had a dressed-up feel, there were a few striped shirts and sweatshirts with Givenchy printed vertically in white down the sides.”

The original supers are still worshipped by the industry,” wrote The Guardian’s Jess CartnerMorley of the sensational joint appearance of Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen and Carla Bruni in Donatella Versace’s Milan show in September. Simplicity of form

The Materic table by Piero Lissoni for Porro emerges in the space with its clear and rigorous aesthetic. Sculptural triumph At the end of the1950s, when he designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, Arne Jacobsen created the Egg, the Swan, the Swan Sofa, the Series 3300 and the Drop. “My industry is not merely about luxury consumption,” declares Stefanus Lo. “Jewellery is a treasure asset that holds both investment and heritage value.” The entrepreneur behind jewellery retailers Mondial and Frank & Co. spoke to chris hanrahan

StefanuS Lo, trustworthy jewellery retailers play a special role in society. “Unlike expensive cars, branded leather bags and so on, the jewellery industry is not merely about luxury consumption,” asserts the 50-year-old founder and CEO of Central Mega Kencana (CMK) during an interview at the Frank & Co. store in Plaza Indonesia. “Jewellery is a treasure asset that holds both investment and heritage value. Customers will own the pieces for themselves and they will pass them on to the next generation. Therefore, they have the right to receive correct information about the quality of the jewellery, prices as well as after-sales service. “Becoming the only clean-and-clear jewellery retailer in Indonesia, that’s our mission. We take this business seriously. Diamonds, precious stones and precious metals are serious commodities. Therefore, the jewellery industry is a very serious industry. Because of our values, we are attached endlessly to each and every piece of jewellery sold by our brands. Our responsibility for every sold piece is timeless.” Growing a family business that was founded by his father, Lo Kurniawan, in the late 1960s, Stefanus Lo opened the first Frank & Co. store at Pondok Indah Mall in 1996. Just over two decades later, his company has four brands (Mondial, Miss Mondial, Frank & Co. and The Palace) serving from middle to high-end segments. It employs some 1,700 employees and has 50 stores. Lo is in expansion mode. By 2020, he aims to have 100 stores and to take his company public. Born in Jakarta, he earned a degree in civil engineering from Universitas Katolik Parahyangan Bandung. After his father retired, he became founder and CEO of Frank & Co. Jewellery in 1995, and Chairman of CMK in 2001.

“The most important thing my father taught me was the importance of trust in this business,” says Lo. “Unscrupulous dealers can easily cheat their customers. How do people know whether the jewellery they are buying is of the quality the dealer says it is? This is why trust is everything in jewellery retailing. When customers buy gold and diamond jewellery in our stores they can be sure they will not be taken advantage of.” Lo claims that CMK has grown to become the biggest jewellery retailer not only in Indonesia, but in Southeast Asia. How has he done it? “It wasn’t an easy path, but it all paid off because of our consistency,” he says. “Each of our brands caters to a different target market and has a unique approach in terms of design. Central Mega Kencana and its four brands are all about high quality and exquisite design. The characteristics of our female customers are those who know how to define success. Their definition of success ranges from being happy and healthy, raising happy and healthy kids, and good family relationships.” Before Lo launched the Frank & Co. chain, jewellery retailing in Indonesia was a mom-andpop store business. “In 1996, the time was right to upgrade,” he recalls. “At that time, jewellery stores in modern shopping centres started to become a trend in Singapore and Hong Kong. In Indonesia, modern shopping malls were also being introduced. We saw this as a big opportunity to bring our passion for jewellery to the next level. “Being a pioneer is not an easy job. Being a pioneer in jewellery retailing in Indonesia is something else. Jewellery lovers were so used to shopping in traditional stores. But Frank & Co. launched a new concept of a jewellery store in a shopping mall, completely run by professionals, not owners.

These stones are selected only from the world’s top type IIA diamonds. Of all

diamonds, type IIa stones are the most rare and valuable, and, therefore, the most sought-after by collectors and investors. This type represents just 1 percent of all diamonds. The reason why these stones are so exceptional is that they contain very little nitrogen or none at all within the crystal lattice, so they do not easily absorb short-wave light. The result is that light is easily able to pass through and bounce back at the

beholder’s eye, producing a stunning appearance. Because they are almost pure carbon, white diamonds are remarkably colourless, unless they contain an inclusion that absorbs certain light. Fancy colored diamonds of this type can be pink, grey, yellow, brown, light blue or light green. Type II diamonds have differing fluorescence and no visible absorption, no nitrogen impurities that may cause a yellow or brown tint. Additionally, type II diamonds form under remarkably high pressure for longer time periods, and tend to have an irregular shape. Mondial’s diamonds are sourced directly from two international sightholders, as well as being certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority in jewellery. A sightholder is a company on De Beers’ global list of authorised bulk purchasers of rough diamonds. The London-based De Beers Group is the world’s leading diamond company, the largest producer and purveyor of rough diamonds.

Lo says Mondial employs stringent selection criteria to ensure that its hand-picked diamonds are of the highest standards. This has enabled the brand to achieve many patents and accolades for premium collections such as Mondial Excellent Cut, the world’s first beyond GIA-graded Triple Excellent Diamonds, selected under 49 parameters. “We source our diamonds from legitimate sources all over the world,” says Lo. “Diamonds are the ultimate symbol of love, so it is very important to ensure that every piece is a responsibly sourced natural diamond. We have been partnering with a few credible sightholders to ensure that our diamonds are conflict-free natural stones. “With man-made CVD stones being aggressively distributed all over the world nowadays, we pay extra attention to the quality of our diamonds. We are very particular when it comes to choose partners to collaborate with. Our long-time partners understand all our parameters, and they strive to deliver.” CMK’s Miss Mondial brand targets the young and affluent market, offering statement pieces with bold designs. Frank & Co. offers timeless, classy pieces, while The Palace is a mass-market affordable jewellery brand. Wedding bands are big business for CMK, accounting for about 30 percent of total sales. The company collaborates with fashion designers, notably Sebastian Gunawan, Anne Avantie and Tex Saverio, to create exclusive wedding-band collections. Says Lo: “We recently launched The Greatest Love Collaboration with Sebastian, Tex and Anne. These three are undoubtedly the

maestros in their own expertise. Each of them has a similar DNA with our brands. It’s every bride’s dream to wear one of their designs.” CMK uses social media to promote its brands, but e-commerce is a low priority for the company. “We started to invest in digital two years ago,” says Lo. “It was essential to mark our presence digitally, especially for the millennials. We tap into the young and affluent market through our social media channels, campaigning mostly gifting ideas and bridal jewellery items. “To be honest, we don’t believe in e-commerce in the jewellery industry. Our market still cherishes the journey of going to the store, holding a piece of jewellery and trying it on. It’s about enjoying the moment when our jeweller presents the pieces inside our exclusive velvet box.”

Kartika Winata fell in love with sparkling jewellery timepieces at a young age. The 28-year-old Managing Director of Eurobutik focuses on introducing freespirited independent watch brands and their unique creations to collectors here, writes handayani tanuwijaya

KartiKa Winata is an unusual millennial. While so many members of her generation seem to want to own or manage tech companies, this entrepreneurial young lady co-founded Eurobutik Bangun Indonesia (EBI), a distributor of Swiss luxury timepieces, at the age of 24. “My first watch, I still have it,” she recalls. “I got it when I was seven years old. My mom bought it for me. It was a Forever Friend, a baby blue coloured watch. I wore it every day, even when I was sleeping. The only time I took it off was when I showered! I have kept it to this day because it has sentimental value.” Along with business partners Hartanto Sutardja and Yanto Chou (who has since left the company), she introduced the independent luxury watch brand deLaCour to Indonesia in 2013. DeLaCour was established by Alfred Terzibachian, Louai Kuzbari and jewellery designer Pierre Koukjian in 2003. With a mission to offer Indonesians “a slice of European luxury” and “to link the right community with the brand”, the first model the watch firm’s founders introduced was deLaCour’s innovative Bichrono. Powered by two independent chronograph movements and decked with 33 diamonds, the unique timepiece won a Unique Design Watch award in Tokyo. More recently, deLaCour launched The Passion, “a timepiece that knows no boundaries”, in a limited edition of just three pieces. The Passion is the marriage of two materials: white gold for its main external visible case, and titanium for the inner case. The use of these two materials offers the wearer the benefits of lightweight elegance and

comfort. The combination of diamonds consists of 13 carats, lending subtlety to the diamondpaved edges. Besides deLaCour, EBI represents Hautlence, BRM, Moser & Cie and Dietrich. All of these companies are independent luxury watch brands from Europe. “The reason we specialise in these highly creative independent brands is because we saw that there was a lack of them in Southeast Asia,” explains 28year old Kartika, who is EBI’s Managing Director. “Initially, the decision to work with deLaCour was helped by input from my partners. I was new to the business, having just graduated from college. To be honest, at first I was really intimidated, because a lot of the people I met were much older and the majority were men. When they saw me there, they would think I was an intern! At that time I was involved in marketing. For the first 18 months of EBI’s existence, I had the role of Marketing Director. This was still acceptable to those big powerful men in Europe. “For me, watchmaking is an art form. I like watches that are very artistic. Each of my brands speaks differently to me. But ultimately, what makes this industry interesting is the people who are so skilled at making a brand good. It’s all about branding and quality. There are people in the industry whom I have met that I admire and who have taught me a lot. They think differently. They are so influential and powerful. Their mindsets are what gets to me. “The watch industry has changed tremendously in the last few years. I came into when it was going through a big change. I saw that in the last three years, going to Baselworld and SIHH in Geneva. The first year, the three big buildings in Basel were

all full. But in the last two years, the number of companies taking booths has been getting smaller and smaller. Some brands did not survive the crisis. We don’t hear much about them because most of them are independent brands - not just in watches but also in jewellery. “But the good thing about watches,

even though some companies have suffered, a lot of independent brands are still surviving pretty well because they serve a niche market of people who love and appreciate timepieces. Luxury watches are so expensive that you need to see them before you buy, so competition e-commerce hasn’t affected my business too much. Clients aren’t going to buy a deLaCour or Hautlence watch online. They want to see the timepiece and feel it. They want to see

the movement and learn about the watchmaking techniques that have gone into making it. That’s why the retail industry for luxury watches is not going to fail.” Kartika studied at the University of San Diego, majoring in Marketing Communications, and at Oxford University, where her major was in

Her father is a watch collector, and deLaCour is one of his favourite brands. “The person who helped me a lot through my career is my father,” says Kartika. “I look up to him. He’s the person who introduced to me to deLaCour. The watch business is lacking something here, and he gave that idea to work with independent brands. When times were hard, I asked him for advice, but he has never forced anything on me. That’s the kind of mentor I need because I don’t like it when people tell me what to do. What I’ve learned from him is to be persistent. Entrepreneurship requires an optimistic character to keep going. So no matter where you are, keep moving. Be persistent and optimistic, that’s his motto. “I admired deLaCour watches when I was younger. Years later, when the opportunity came along, I was like, ‘Isn’t that the watch I liked before?’ The timing was right, and I felt that this brand had big potential here. What I like about the independent brands is that they have the freedom to create whatever they like. In my opinion, they are more artistic than the big brands.”

Each brand at EBI has its own identity. Says Kartika: “When I pick a company, I consider price points and market segments. I ask them, where are you going with

your brand? I need to know their trajectory. What makes our five brands succeed here is the fact that their principals are so involved. Whenever we need them for a marketing event, they come along to support us. That’s really important, because when

we bring in a new brand we have to educate people about it. It’s very helpful if the principals come along.” Among EBI’s brands, deLaCour has a special place in Kartika’s heart. “The designs are so elegant. They look classy and expensive,” she explains. “The ladies’ models speak femininity because their curvature is inspired by the human body. I would say that the City Umbra (an eightpiece limited edition) is the star of the deLaCour diamond watch collection this year. I love how bold it is and how each stone was meticulously picked out to create the most beautiful rainbow ombre effect.” Jewellery watches are a niche market that has held up well in Indonesia during the last few years. “The devotees are there constantly,” says Kartika. “Our business has been steady. Assuming you like the brand and admire the design and the mechanical aspects of the timepiece, the most important reason for buying a jewellery watch is the quality of the stones – and how well they sparkle!”

The supermodel has always shared Omega’s values: a commitment to beauty, quality and reliability, and a strong sense of tradition. Crawford was instrumental in establishing the brand’s fashion credentials. Today, the relationship is strengthened even further with the selection of her children, Presley and Kaia Gerber, as Omega’s newest brand ambassadors. Prestige had a rare opportunity to meet Crawford when she attended Omega’s “Her Time” exhibition opening in Paris at the end of September. Highlights of an absorbing interview:

What do you enjoy about Wearing a Watch? It used to be that I wore a watch every day because I’m a very punctual person. A watch was a necessity. I even slept with my watch on. I think that’s why Omega likes me, I’m always on time. But nowadays, no one needs to wear a watch. We all have our phones. The watch has become strictly an accessory. But to me, it’s a real statement accessory. And different watches make me feel different. It’s like the difference between flats and heels. It’s like, how do I want to feel that day? Do I want to wear a more masculine watch with a shirt and jeans. Or do I want a feminine watch with something more for the evening. Or do I want a little more sparkle or bling? I’ve learned to really appreciate the craftsmanship of a quality timepiece. Also, just having fun with a watch wardrobe and really just being able to wear what you want. But my basic everyday watch is stainless with rose gold, more of a men’s watch with a black face. What are the highlights of your Work With omega? I’ve had so many. I’ve ridden an elephant in India. We’ve gone to the Olympics with Omega several times. But I think the one that was the most impactful was when, three years ago, I went to Peru with my daughter and Orbis. And we did a documentary about the Flying Eye Hospital, because Omega had partnered with Orbis. It was just to be able to share that with my daughter and to work with a company that gives back. And even for her to see in Peru, not every

child there has access to good eye care. For her, it made a big impression. She saw that you can make a difference, even in a country far away from yours, and that was a great thing to share.

since you joined omega, hoW have you evolved and hoW has the Watch evolved for you? When I first started working with Omega, they hired me as a model for an ad. At that time, the way they saw me was as a fashion model. And the way that I saw them was as a client for an advertising job. But when we did the shoot, everyone got along and then they invited me to an event in Milan that they were doing, and that’s when we really connected I think. Omega is all about heritage and quality … there’s so much history there. And even as a young woman, I knew that I wanted those same qualities to be associated with my brand. Then we started working together more … It’s kind of like dating; You go on the first date, then you go on a second date, and then we decided to get married. I always joke that I’ve been with Omega longer than I’ve been married to my husband. As their brand ambassador, I love that they’re not still expecting me to be the 25-year-old model that I was when we started. They embrace the fact that I’m now a mother, a wife, a businesswoman. I’m 51, not 25. They’re not trying to make me be that still. They’re letting me grow up and they appreciate this history that we have together. Now that my children are joining the Omega family, I’m so excited for them. Omega is all about legacy and obviously my kids are my legacy. And they’ve already done things with Omega. We’ve gone to the Olympics together. They already know a lot of the Omega team. They know what Omega stands for and they’re really excited. What sort of legacy do you hope to see presley and kaia carrying forWard? For both of them, it’s about finding their passion. My husband always tells them, “If you love what your job is, then it doesn’t feel like work. You’re just doing what you love.” I want to help them define what it is that they love and figure out a way to make their work life a part of that. As a model, I’m sure Kaia’s career will be different to mine because the world has changed. We didn’t

about is children with cancer. Since I started modelling, I’ve raised money for the hospital where my brother was treated and for the American Cancer Society. And even with Omega, usually when I’m in any city, I go to the children’s hospitals and we bring toys. The kids don’t even know who I am. The parents do, but to the kids I am just someone who is giving them a present and paying attention to them. That’s my main charity. And then with Omega, I got involved with Orbis. Its International Flying Eye Hospital gives free eye operations to disadvantaged children all over the world. I think it’s important to find a charity that you can connect with personally.

For me, getting older is about taking care of myself, but also about developing the other areas of my life. Yes, the past was great and I had fun, but I also want the present to be great and the future to be great. So it’s about embracing where you are today, and what that is about, and not only being nostalgic for the past.

88 hoW do you maintain your good looks? I thought it was really going to be hard to turn 50. I said, “There’s nothing girlish about 50. It’s not young.” But the day after I turned 50, I was like, “I’m still the same person.” I realised that the anticipation is worse than the reality. I’m lucky because I have one grandmother still alive. I have my mother and my father. So I have great genetics to look to. Since I started modelling, I’ve exercised. I try to eat healthy. I think every year I even get a little better, because I learn more. I know that I don’t look the same as I did when I was 20, and I shouldn’t really either. I have kids who are almost 20.

My brother died when I was 10 years old. He had leukaemia. So for me, the charity that I’m the most passionate

Who are the Women Who inspire you? I’d have to say that my mother and my sisters are my biggest role models. It’s funny because, when I was young, I did not think much of my mother as a role model because she didn’t work. She was a housewife, whereas I knew I wanted to work. But then, when my brother eventually passed away, she did go to work. My mother had bumps in her life, losing a child and getting divorced from my father. But she is the type of person that would always make the best out of everything and I used to say, “You’re such a Pollyanna.” Only when I became an adult did I realise how incredibly strong my mother is. She always chose to see

That’s a choice. I remember when I was young, she wasn’t like an executive woman who had a power suit on and a briefcase. Her power was in how she chose to deal with the life that was handed to her. How she approached life. And I think that’s a great quality. My sisters are very similar to her. They’re both great moms and they’re both teachers. If I didn’t become a model I probably would have been a teacher as well.

What’s your favourite Watch? I’m the most sentimental about the Constellation. When I started working with Omega, I went to Switzerland and I met with the watchmakers and they were redesigning it at the time, and I actually got to have a little bit of input. So I’ll always feel connected to the Constellation. As I said, I love having more than one watch. At night, I wear the Ladymatic a lot. There are so many great ones, it’s fun to have a little bit of choice to play with. Which of omega’s values really speak to you? What I’ve loved about Omega from the very beginning is its quality, and seeing how much pride

the watchmakers have and their attention to detail. It gave me a whole new appreciation for watchmaking and quality timepieces. Omega also stands for legacy, history and a timelessness. Even though it’s about time, there’s a timeless thing about the Omega brand. But also their innovation, and the moon, and their involvement with the Olympics. They just do a lot of cool stuff. And their other ambassadors, I know most of them. They’re all really nice people as well as being at the top of their fields. So, for my kids, legacy will be the most important thing, because they grew up with Omega. I grew up in a time when you had to wear a watch to tell the time. For kids now, it’s different. It’s only about the statement they’re making. It’ll be interesting for Kaia and Presley to be a part of redefining why a quality timepiece matters to their generation. It’s like, why do we love vintage cars? I guess it’s that sense of understated luxury.

he scale of Jakarta’s traffic jams never ceases to amaze people, even those of us who have been living in the city for years. Jasmine Prasetio has just returned from a business meeting, a journey across town that “took longer than I thought it would because the traffic is really bad today.” There’s a little surprise in her voice, even though she knows only too well how hellish the congestion can be. An hour before our meeting, she had politely sent us a message warning that she might be delayed for as much as 30 minutes. In the event, she arrives at Sotheby’s Indonesia Representative Office at The Capital Residence in the SCBD precisely on time – and holding two cups of cappuccino. “I hope you like this,” she smiles. “There’s also toast with cheese and condensed milk for us. It’s my favourite snack.” Jasmine is Director, Asia, and Country Head in Indonesia of Sotheby’s, one of the oldest auction houses in the world. She started with the company as an intern in Singapore in 2004. She worked there until 2009 and then moved

to the Hong Kong office, as a specialist in Southeast Asian paintings. She took charge of Sotheby’s Indonesia in 2013. Prestige interviewed her back then. Four years on, Jasmine still exudes the same charm – softspoken, incredibly smart and knowledgeable. “I have been with Sotheby’s close to 13 years now,” she says. “I have been so fortunate to be with a great company like Sotheby’s that has an excellent platform and enables me to interact with my colleagues who are some of the foremost experts in the industry. Being at Sotheby’s has given me the opportunity to observe how the art and jewellery markets have evolved.” In her work, she has seen and touched a lot of “national treasures” from around the world. “Because this is the Bling Issue, I would like to share my experience about jewellery and gemstones. For instance, when I tried on the iconic 1928 Cartier Tutti Frutti, one of the highlights of Sotheby’s October Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Autumn Sale in Hong Kong, it was like having a sculpture on your wrist,” she says. “The original Cartier family were also collectors and they went to India and collected stones from the Mogul period. They matched the colours of emeralds, sapphires, rubies and onyx. The fact that it is hand-carved and that he put all the gemstones of the same hue together to create it is painstakingly beautiful. I’ve been so fortunate, so blessed, that I can experience things like is as part of my work.” Jasmine talks about the 59.60-carat CTF Pink Star diamond, a Fancy Vivid Pink Internally Flawless stone, which sold for US$71.2 million at Sotheby’s earlier this year. “It is indeed one of the most remarkable pieces of jewels I’ve ever seen,” she muses. “It set the world auction record for any diamond or jewel and the highest price for any work sold at auction in Asia. “I love jewellery. Well, who doesn’t? It represents culture and makes us feel beautiful. It’s a fashion statement, an art that you can wear,

and it has an asset value. Jewellery is the perfect integration between art that nature creates and art that mankind makes.” When it comes to the magnificent world of jewellery, Jasmine could be the perfect insider. Her job is essentially that of a treasure hunter. She travels around the world seeking collectible jewellery, paintings, sculptures, timepieces and other precious items, and connecting their sellers with prospective buyers, at auctions or in private sales. She knows more than a thing or two about bling. “One of the most interesting things about jewellery is that it’s not only women who collect it,” she points out. “Men do as well. In fact, the tradition of collecting jewellery has been around for centuries. Take a look at the Mogul Empire in India in the 16th century. When we look at jewellery in macro perspective, the pieces are precious and unique. No two stones are completely alike, especially with gemstones like rubies. The perfect shade of red, known as pigeon blood, is really hard to find, even in Myanmar.” Personally, Jasmine has no limit in terms of the kinds of jewellery she likes. “I do like statement jewellery,” she says. “I like necklaces and earrings. It’s very subjective, of course, because there’s beauty in everything. Above all, there’s one piece of jewellery that has a special place in my life. My grandmother gave it to me when I was 12 years old. She’s the one who taught me about precious stones and crystal.

She gave me an antique ring. It has a green diamond flanked with two rubies. It’s very small. I love it because it’s unique and has a history. I guess that’s one of the enduring charms of fine jewellery. It’s part of a legacy that you can pass on. It has an idea of heritage. You can have a little bit of the past and a memory of someone you love.” How about buying jewellery as an investment? “It’s all about timing and opportunity,” says Jasmine.

Art is a big part of her life and work, of course. “Perhaps because it is so integrated with my life, I recognise art in my daily life: in food, fashion, jewellery and many things,” she says, mentioning that The Broad in Los Angeles is her favourite museum. Jasmine has a degree in Economics from the top-ranked Wellesley College in

He bought the 8.62 carat ruby for a second time, having acquired it first at an auction eight years prior for US$3.6 million and sold it for a profit. This is an illustration of how rare gemstones are so collectable. “If you want to start collecting jewellery, always buy what you like. Second, be aware of what you’re buying: does it have a secondary market value? Buying a good brand is also an added value. Third, buy period pieces that are rare. Last, you have to be able to make your decisions in a timely manner. Like I said, it’s all about timing and opportunity. When the market is

Massachusetts and once wanted to be a lawyer. Art has always been her hobby. Her mother used to take her to galleries and to artists’ studios in Bandung and Yogyakarta when she was young. She was 14 when she was in an airplane and looked out of the window to see the sun rise. The streaks and bands of orange, pink, blue and yellow in the clouds reminded her of a Rothko. That was the beginning of her love affair with art. “In the art market, we have seen prices go up and down, but in the greater scheme of things what matters most is that the art of collecting and patronage has been in existence for centuries. Indeed, there are records of art patronage in 15th and 16th-century Florence. The drive to collect has only strengthened over the years. President Sukarno was one of the world’s most prominent and voracious collectors. Today, when I go to art fairs and exhibitions, I am delighted and excited to see so many young enthusiasts.”

Talking about the Indonesian contemporary art market, Jasmine gets excited. “We have morphed from being the underdog from an emerging market to a serious and respected player in this globalised world,” she declares. “With that also come the challenges and the responsibilities for all of us involved in the art industry, because in order to escalate to the next level, it takes a whole nation. We had members of the board of Asia Art Archive (a respected non-profit) visit Jakarta and Bandung recently. They were of diverse backgrounds and nationalities - all intellectuals, all used to seeing the best of the art world, and I felt privileged and honoured to hear how impressed and energised they were by their art exploration experience here.” At the end of our conversation, Prestige asks her that if she could have a lunch with one of the greatest artists in history, who would she choose? “Raden Saleh,” she says Jasmine, with certainty. “I’d be interested to know what he thought about the art world today. He lived in a time that was at the cusp of change. During the colonial era, his art expressed how to live with dignity when one lived under oppression. Among his most iconic themes were hunting and fighting, and animal scenes. They illustrate the circle of life. They say that while life is often about the survival of the fittest, there is no absolute power or absolute predator. There is always someone stronger. Therefore, we must always have hope.”

Cheryl blossom is your breakout role. how DiD

you get the part?

wenty-three-year-old actress Madelaine Petsch has captured the imaginations of millennials all over the world with her fierce portrayal of “fabulous queen bee” Cheryl Blossom in the Riverdale television series. The second season of the show, which is based on Archie comic characters, premiered in October, and the first episode became its highest-rated and most-watched to date, according to Nielsen.

I auditioned for a guest spot on Legends of Tomorrow. It turned out that the casting director was also casting the pilot for Riverdale. He asked me to audition for the role of Betty Cooper, but I always had the Cheryl Blossom character in mind. The minute they had scenes for Cheryl, I went in, and the rest is history. what maDe you want to play Cheryl blossom? She has so many layers and complexities beneath the surface. At any given point, Cheryl is feeling at least five different emotions. It makes being her so much more fulfilling as an artist, and exciting.

who is your biggest influenCe in aCting? I would say Meryl Streep.

what is your personal goal in life? To always be happy and appreciative of where I am. To stay inspired and passionate about my art. I would love to delve more into the world of movies soon, and eventually get into directing and producing as well. I want to try everything.

F 123 r iday, september 29 was a big day for legendary Swiss watch manufacturer Omega - and for Cinta Laura Kiehl. The stunning 24-year-old German-Indonesian actress was one of the friends of the brand to be invited to the opening of Omega’s “Her Time” exhibition in Paris. Cinta joined supermodel Cindy Crawford and Omega CEO Raynald Aeschlimann in celebrating the company’s ladies watch collections in the historic and magnificent setting of the Hôtel de Sully, a private mansion in the Louis XIII style located in the Marais, IV arrondissement. Prestige joined Los Angeles-based Cinta in the city of light, where she was photographed by Mitchell Nguyen McCormack. “I’m a representative of the millennial generation,” says Cinta of her role with Omega. “This is

an opportunity for me to depict my country in a strong and positive light. I feel honoured and grateful to have been chosen by Omega to represent Indonesia in Paris. “The exhibition was very beautifully laid out. I found the progression of Omega’s women’s watch designs fascinating, due to the fact that the models on display clearly demonstrated the trends of each time period. I personally loved the designs from the 1920s. They incorporated a bold gold strap and fierce feminine curves that allowed them to serve as both watches and as exquisite bracelets. “The Hôtel de Sully added to the grandness and elegance of the occasion with its old Parisian interior. This reinforced Omega’s image as a luxurious and sophisticated brand. In essence, everything was executed very tastefully.” What was it like to meet Cindy Crawford and her family? “It was great to see that Cindy has remained so grounded, despite her fame and success,” says Cinta. “Her eloquence adds to her poise and elegance, which in my opinion makes her even more captivating. Her children (Kaia and Presley), who have joined her as brand ambassadors, seemed to be very sweet. “Raynald Aeschlimann was extremely charming. I was in awe of how sweet he was. Jean-Pascal Perret, the Vice President, was also very kind. He sat with the Omega Indonesia team and me at the welcome dinner. It was quite evident that we were his favourites! The trip demonstrated that Omega is a familyoriented brand. Once welcomed by them, one automatically becomes a part of a loving, loyal and impenetrable ‘household’.

“All in all, my time in Paris with Omega was very enjoyable. We were lucky that the weather was extremely pleasant for autumn. Hence, we were lucky to have the city lit up beautifully during the photo shoot. I almost felt like I was on holiday, given that Omega made me feel so relaxed. The shoot with Prestige was a great experience as well. Mitchell and Peter Zewet were a blast to work with. It was never boring, and I definitely enjoyed myself.” Cinta was born in Quakenbrück, Germany on August 17, 1993. Her mother, Herdiana, is a lawyer, while her father, Michael Kiehl, is an hotelier. “I grew up in multiple countries due to my father’s work,” says Cinta. “I lived in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia and Germany. I moved to Indonesia at the age of 12, lived in Jakarta until I was 17 and then moved to the US. “Essentially, I was raised everywhere! I feel blessed to have been raised that way, as it allowed me to become the adaptable person I am today. I love learning about new cultures and want to continue to experience living in different places. Our world is globalising and I feel that it is imperative for individuals in present-day society to have the capacity to understand

126 the world and the people in it. “Having a very disciplined and organised German father definitely helps me to manage my time. I was raised to always respect other people’s time and to work in a very efficient manner. Being punctual comes naturally to me and, therefore, I cannot imagine myself being any other way.” Cinta studied psychology and German literature at Columbia University in New York City,

and Teen Wolf, and is set for a spring release in 2018. Cinta adds: “I am currently filming my fourth Hollywood movie in LA. I can’t disclose too much information at this point. Nonetheless, it is my favourite role so far because it’s very different from anything I have ever done before. Imagine the teenage version of Rosamund Pike’s character in Gone Girl. Just stay tuned!” The actress lived in New York City for three years. Then, having completed her studies, she moved to LA to focus on her career. Says Cinta: “I believe that life is about creating new

graduating with honours. She began her career as a teenager in 2007, and has appeared in several TV series and movies. Among her Hollywood movies are After the Dark and The Ninth Passenger. “I was in Savannah, Georgia this past summer filming a movie called Crazy for the Boys, in which I play the quintessential high-school mean girl,” she grins. “The movie is akin to High School Musical and was really fun to shoot.” The film features actors from TV shows such as Degrassi

challenges. So it’s important for me to push myself and see if I can bring my love for acting to the next level. “Getting a part in a Hollywood movie is not easy. It can be a long and tedious process that requires a lot of mental strength and will power. Only one percent of those who attempt a career in Hollywood actually make it big. Yes, it’s that hard! One must go through numerous auditions, which in most cases end up in rejection until, hopefully, that one perfect role comes along. “Long story short, it is definitely important to have a solid manager and agent who can help you land auditions for good-quality projects.

Casting directors only take actors from reliable managements and agencies. Additionally, there’s anywhere between five to 10 steps after a preliminary audition before a new actor actually lands a role in a movie or TV series. “It’s a tough industry, but I am seeing very good progress in my career that is allowing me to take on bigger and better roles. They say it takes on average a decade to rise in Hollywood. Let’s hope I can beat that statistic. “I’ve attended quite a few prestigious movie award ceremonies, like the Oscars and Bafta. I enjoy these because it allows me to meet interesting industry people that work behind and in front of the camera. I have met many big stars at these events, such as Emma Stone, Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Lawrence, Sofia Vergara. The list goes on!” How long will Cinta stay in LA? “We’ll see,” she smiles. “As we all know, life likes to throw random curveballs. My motto is, ‘No matter where life takes me, I refuse to live a mediocre life.’ All I can say at this time is that I will continue to work towards succeeding in the international entertainment industry. My biggest goal is to have a stable career doing what I love, starting by booking amazing film and TV projects that I’m passionate about.”

Sofia Coppola finished shooting Marie Antoinette in 2005, she treated herself to a Cartier Tank watch. Twelve years later, she shot a short film for the online campaign of the updated Panthère de Cartier watch, originally created in 1983. The partnership between Cartier and Sofia is not only a great match (Sofia is an adopted Parisian and style icon besides a celebrated movie director, the jeweller is French), but also an idealistic one. Sofia’s renowned feminine perspective in movies appears in the short film for Cartier, starred by and told through a female lead. Sofia has stood out as an icon of style, taste and contemporary elegance. As a determined artist whose work transcends trends, she gives sensitive expression to what femininity is today. While men do sometimes play roles central to the narrative of her films (Stephen Dorff in Somewhere or Bill Murray in Lost in Translation), her leading characters are almost exclusively women. With an abundance of talent and a distinctive artistic vision, she knows, better than anyone, how to reinvent the past with a rigorously contemporary touch. With retro sound blasting on the background, the Cartier short film is a showcase of Panthère de Cartier as a round-the-clock piece. From afternoon dip to sexy time with the lover and dance hour at the club with friends – the watch is as versatile as it gets. The short film was shot in Los Angeles and stars the Australian actress Courtney Eaton from Mad Max: Fury Road and also Brooklyn and Amanda Sudano, daughters of disco queen Donna Summers. “When the Panthère watch came out in 1983 there were so many great movies, and I love the stars of that time,” says Sofia. “I remember the glamorous kind of women who wore a Panthère watch. It was just a stylish time to remember and to propose a modern interpretation of it.” The updated Panthère de Cartier features square case and rounded corners, made entirely in metal – be it gold or stainless steel. There are also three limited-edition styles in a lacquer panther-spot motif: white gold and pave diamonds or pink gold in two sizes. “With an abundance of talent and a distinctive artistic vision, she knows, better than anyone, how to reinvent the past with a rigorously contemporary touch,” says Cartier in a statement.

Designed to protect the most fragile objects during long journeys, that luxurious luggage came with padded compartments for scents. Later, in the 1920s, the maison called upon artists to design decorative motifs for engraved crystal bottles. Encouraged by the success of these collectibles, in 1927 Louis Vuitton launched

its first fragrance, Heures d’Absence. This was followed by Je, Tu, Il in 1928, Réminiscences and Eau de Voyage in 1946. Les Parfums is the brand’s first new collection of fragrances in 70 years, made possible by the acquisition of a creative atelier in Grasse, in the Provence region of France. The seven fragrances that comprise Les Parfums were created by House Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. Exclusively available at Louis Vuitton’s Plaza Indonesia flagship store, the collection is an invitation to travel, a prologue to an imminent departure. Prestige brought together seven fabulous friends of the brand to model the

seven new fragrances: Apogee, Contre Moi, Turbulences, Matiere Noire, Rose Des Vents, Mille Feux and Dans La Peau. During a day-long shoot at Da Vinci on Sudirman, we asked Kelly Tandiono, Shalvynne Chang, Olivia Lazuardy, Stella Lowis, Angel Pieters, Millane Fernandez and Tatjana Saphira to tell us about their favourite perfumes, what they like most about Louis Vuitton and what projects are keeping them busy these days.

146 Kelly Tandiono “Louis Vuitton is timeless. It’s been one of my favourite brands since I was a kid,” declares the multitalented model and actress. “I tried Matiere Noire from the new collection, and I like how it’s very simple and modern.” When it comes to signature scents, Kelly, who at the time of interview was preparing for Jakarta Fashion Week, opts for those reminiscent of the outdoors. “I love the sea and the smell of cleanliness. That’s why when it comes to my favourite scents, I gravitate towards the ocean,” she says.

Shalvynne Chang For Shalvynne, the perfect combination of scents would be light and not too overpowering. “Fresh with a little hint of florals and musk, that’s my favourite kind of fragrance,” says the 27-yearold Director of Serpong-based Cometal, a metal fabrication company. She tried Turbulences from the collection. “Their pieces are always classic, but not at all outdated. The brand is also very feminine and chic at the same time,” she says of Louis Vuitton. Shalvynne plans to open a Montessori pre-school next year, having recently gained early childhood education certification.

olivia lazuardy Olivia is naturally feminine and elegant, so when it comes to her signature scent she gravitates

towards anything pure and sweet. “I think floral and fruity smells suit my personality the best,” says the 24-year-old fashion blogger. “I love their boots. They are very cool and easy to pair with mini dresses,” she adds. “I also like their classic monograms.” The Binus University graduate, who modelled Rose des Vents from the collection, is busy with her clothing label, Calla Atelier. “We are creating a ready-to-wear line, so please look forward to it!”

STella lowiS “Pure vanilla with hint of roses. I love how it reminds me of freshly baked cookies, and the light roses just add the right amount of sweetness,” says 27-year-old Stella Lowis of her favourite kind of scent. The co-founder and executive pastry chef of La Maison Patisserie says she feels a strong connection to Louis Vuitton. “Apart from their mind-blowing designs, they also make a big contribution to society, as seen from their latest campaign in collaboration with Unicef,” she explains. Stella, who modelled Contre Moi from the collection, aims to expand her bakery business, now established in Medan and Jakarta, to other parts of Indonesia.

TaTjana Saphira The 20-year-old actress, who has just finished shooting her latest movie, Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2, with Fedi Nuril, Dewi Sandra and Chelsea Islan, loves the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. “I like how it has a very soothing and calming effect on me,” she declares. Talking about Les Parfums, Tatjana has nothing but praise. “I like how each scent lingers,” she smiles. “When it comes to Louis Vuitton, a few words come to mind: classy, timeless, comfortable, luxurious, chic. I think these perfectly fit the essence of the collection.”

angel pieTerS The 20-year-old songstress favours sweet yet strong fragrances, as these describe her personality the best. “In particular, I love the smell of green leaves and roses,” says Angel, who modelled Mille Heure. She grew up with Louis Vuitton, so it’s one of the luxury brands she loves the most. “Their pieces are classic and timeless. Many people say this all the time, but it’s very true,” says Angel. “The first bag I ever had was a Louis Vuitton, and I still have it.” She is working on her first album. “It’s going to be mix of pop and soul song,” she tells us. “I’m currently finding inspirations and exploring many options for the album.”

Millane Fernandez For Millane, a perfume is something that makes a first impression, “A scent is something so personal,” she points out. “For me, it’s important to smell good and have your own character through it.” The 31-year-old singer, who modelled Dans La Pau, considers Louis Vuitton as something she cannot live without. “Their pieces are iconic, with an extensive range of bags, clothes and now perfumes,” she says. “It’s something you would want for sure.” Millane is about to release her first Indonesian album. “This is my ‘baby’ right now,” she reveals. “I’m hands-on with everything, from the writing to melody arrangements and music video concepts. It’s very special for me.”

Louis Vuitton launched Time Capsule in Singapore on October 17, a journey through the history of the house that revisits its landmark innovations in technology and design. Travelling from the house’s beginnings in 1854 to the present day, the story is told using rare and celebrated objects selected from the Louis Vuitton archive. The immersive exhibition features interactive digital experiences, including a highly sensory LED animation in the Magic Malle room, as well as a Facebook Messenger based Digital Guide. That’s why we offer international comfort food with a twist,” explains Executive Chef Vebrina Hadi. “For example, we have Japanese fried rice, which is an all-time favourite among comfort foods. stints at two top Melbourne restaurants – as Chef de Partie at the two Michelin-starred Rockpool and at Maha Bar and Grill, where she worked for celebrity chef Shane Delia – Chef Vebrina bosses the kitchen of Ismaya Group’s latest eatery, Mr. Fox, on the ground floor of The Energy building in Jakarta’s SCBD. Mr. Fox is a character dreamed up by the marketing team at Ismaya Group. They see him as a charming, witty and alluring character who has made countless good friends around the globe. As a result of all these encounters, he has created an amazing menu of dishes and cocktails. Every detail of the 150-seater eatery - from the dishes to the cocktails and the framed pictures in all corners of the place - represents Mr. Fox’s personality. The new restaurant’s ambiance is quite different from Ismaya’s sophisticated ventures, such as Gia or Skye. This one is casual and homey, with an eclectic interior in mint hues. The dishes that come out of the kitchen encompass a wide range of flavours, from fresh healthy breakfast selections to contemporary presentations of classic comfort dishes. The restaurant encourages adventurous ordering so that diners can explore numerous tastes and discover new favourites.

Equal to his love of food and travel is Mr. Fox’s passion for cocktails. The restaurant’s mixologist, Peter Seabrook, previously worked at top bars in London and Sydney. Each of his creations has a story behind it, including Madame St. Germaine (Rp 130,000), Captain Cori (Rp 120,000) and Carmen “Chi Chi” Colada (Rp 120,000). Cocktail ordered, what about the food? Crickets perhaps? Among the appetisers, Chef Vebrina recommends an adventurous, exotic snack called K.F.C (or “krunchy” fried crickets) (Rp 75,000). Crickets are a popular snack in Thailand, and she and her colleagues at Mr. Fox hope they will also tickle the taste buds of diners in Indonesia. Maybe the idea of eating crickets sounds terrifying. But their taste, when blended with crispy garlic, sambal kacang and sweet soy caramel, is surprisingly good. 180 All Saints’ Day z Australia’s newest joy are the wines of St Hugo. gerrie lim gets to visit the Barossa Valley vineyard and enjoy its Legacy Wine Experience z

i’m in the barossa valley, South Australia, home of St Hugo Wines, gazing over to the adjacent Eden Valley and a parcel of Riesling vines at the Steingarten vineyard. Glass in hand and feeling playful, I bless the vines with a resolute flourish. The wind blows the wine back into my face and I laugh, knowing that now I’ll never forget the place. Steingarten is one of the portfolio of vineyards under the St Hugo aegis. It’s also the spot where Colin Gramp, great-grandson of Johann Gramp, an immigrant from Bavaria and the founder of the winery that eventually became St Hugo (confusingly, the Riesling is labelled St Helga), decided in 1962 to blow out the soil with dynamite. His intention was to prove that Riesling vines founded on the Mosel variety could thrive here in the schist soil, with its dry ground that requires deep vinous roots.

Fast forward to the present day and lunch at St Hugo’s newly opened restaurant, which was built at its Barossa winery within restored ironstone walls from the 1850s, where I’m drinking the very same Riesling. It’s an off-dry style that would charm anyone into thinking the wine hails from Alsace or Germany rather than South Australia, vindicating with a vengeance the younger Gramp’s foresight. Moving past the St Helga, I next confront a 2012 Grenache Shiraz Mataro, a 2010 Vetus Purum Shiraz, a 2012 St Harriett Semillon, a 2012 Private Collection Rowland Flat Shiraz, a 2008 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and a 1970 Tawny. The Vetus Purum Shiraz, a dense purple wine with crimson hues and a penetration made subtly stronger by its smoky notes and engaging intensity, is my favourite wine of the session, well paired with a seared Wagyu, grilled Romaine lettuce and Jerusalem artichoke chips. I share the morning’s Riesling story with St Hugo’s Chief Winemaker, Daniel Swincer, and ask how the Wine Society’s 2011 Young Winemaker of the Year came to Steingarten. “Originally, I didn’t want to be a winemaker,” he

replies. “I wanted to be a fighter pilot. But then I realised winemaking was a great job. You get to travel and see the world, it’s agricultural but there’s science involved. There’s a bit of artistic licence in what you do and you get to talk to people about it, so this is a diverse job. I grew into it, essentially.” Swincer had earlier taken out some barrel samples from the 2017 vintage from various parts of the Barossa, so “we can see what they taste like. Then we get to fly over those same areas in a helicopter to see what they look like from above”. He emphasises that while the company has existed since 1847, St Hugo is its luxury brand and originally it produced only one wine, the St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. “That was it until 2011 when we released the rest of this range we’re going to taste through,” he says.

“The red wines are blends from the Barossa and Coonawarra. We have the cellar door here, our travel retail and then finally our ‘icon range’ – our single-vineyard Vetus Purum wines, launched in 2014. We use mostly French oak and start with the fruit and the vineyard, which is the most important. It’s about the intensity of fruit and the density of the tannin, but it’s not overblown and jammy.” “Everything starts with the wine,” says Mark McNamara, executive chef of the St Hugo Restaurant, who energises us in a “food philosophy” exercise that prominently showcases how his menu pairing starts with wine, not food. “The essence of this is to discern which flavours are tied to this wine,” he

says. “Last night we had Cabernet with lobster and it worked wonderfully, because it’s not about the lobster but the flavours that go with the lobster. We need to find the right affinity and we do this so often that we have this programme about the basic flavours.” He points to the table, where lines of food items are strategically placed in precise rows that actually tell a story. “Like here we have seaweed which goes well with Cabernet. We don’t use much vinegar in my cooking except black and brown rice vinegar. We use a teaspoon with five litres of sauce. We much prefer turmeric or verjus, things that have malic or tartaric acid, the same acids you find in your wine.” McNamara indicates the salty flavours – anchovies, capers, olives, fish sauce and kombu sauce, mushroom sauce and fennel sauce – and fats – coconut, butter and olive oil. “We used to have a pork belly braised with cocoa and verjus and miso, and it was sensational. I’d suggest

you try this line here because it’s so pungent and powerful, they’ll stay on your palate for a long time – vanilla paste, lemon zest, fresh thyme. Finally, some fresh green herbs that will be in season – fennel fronds, tarragon and basil. Your feedback is essential to how we’re going to prepare the dinner tonight.” But before that it’s time for our helicopter ride. The Legacy Wine Experience allows for a tasting of old vintages from the Hugo Gramp Room, followed by a jaunt in the whirlybird. As we judder serenely in the skies above, I look down at the Steingarten vineyard from where I’d started out that morning and I can visualise old Colin Gramp, who’d celebrated his 94th birthday just the day before, smiling contentedly.

z Style is not done by halves in Hanoi’s French Quarter, and nowhere more so than at the city’s storied Metropole hotel, writes nick goodyer z

the appellation grande dame. Few are worthy of it, but one that has most definitively earned that sobriquet is the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. Opened in 1901, the hotel has played host to a long list of the good, the great and, in some cases, the shady, including Graham Greene, Mick Jagger, Charlie Chaplin, Joan Baez and Robert De Niro. During my stay, Gérard Depardieu was in residence (I literally bumped into him in the lobby and he really does have an almighty hooter). Also in residence at the time was the current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, never alone and always surrounded by an entourage of large chaps in dark suits muttering into their cuffs. No chance of bumping into him. Why the hotel attracts such distinguished guests is immediately evident upon entering. It is oldworld French-colonial charm personified, reassuringly solid in brass and dark woods, reverential in porcelain and hushed corners, but with a degree of panache that the other old dears – The Strand

many hotels claim

in Yangon, Singapore’s Raffles and the Eastern & Oriental in Penang – might struggle to match. What these hotels have in common is their position on historical shipping routes and, later, air routes from Europe to the Far East, coming into their own in the heady days of France’s Air Orient flying-boat service. The Metropole opened when Vietnam was part of French Indochina; it was renamed the Thong Nhat following independence, and during the Vietnam War sheltered guests – including Jane Fonda – in its bomb shelter during the Christmas bombings of 1972 (the refuge and its cramped confines was recently rediscovered and is now open for tours). After the war, the building housed several embassies and consulates in the 1970s, and in the early ’90s reopened as the Pullman Hotel Metropole following extensive renovations; the Opera Wing was added during the Pullman era. It took its current title in 2009, as part of the Sofitel Legend collection. All this and more can be found in a highly detailed account of its past along the History Path in the Metropole Wing, while the hotel has resident historians who remember the war only too well, and who give highly informative tours with a number of anecdotes thrown in for good measure. The Metropole’s historic pedigree comes to the fore in the original Metropole Wing, while the Opera Wing, in neo-classical style, is less teak, more chic. In all, the property has 364 rooms,

including three suites named after Greene, Chaplin and Maugham that are favoured by visiting heads of state. Yet the property’s storied past does nothing to cramp its style. Like many great hotels, its bars and restaurants are a focus for high society. Of particular note is the fine French dining at Beaulieu, where the French Dover sole with hazelnut crust is particularly outstanding. Spices Garden offers Vietnamese classics such as pho (actually a breakfast dish), spicy pork ribs and soft-shelled crab rolls. Bamboo Bar, next to the pool, is a wonderful venue to chill of an evening (perhaps literally – Hanoi is quite cool in the winter), while La Terrasse is a Parisian-style street café and a lot of fun, albeit with views of an Asian city’s street life complete with the ubiquitous scooters. The Metropole is located just a stone’s throw from Hanoi’s most famous tourist attraction – Hoan Kiem Lake, complete with scenic pagoda in the centre and ornate bridge to a small island. The lake is renowned for its giant turtles, though it’s now uncertain if any are

left, one being found inauspiciously dead last year. The road around the lake is pedestrianised at the weekends, bringing in youngsters who sing and play instruments or take part in traditional street games and impromptu football matches. The street-party atmosphere is particularly fun at night, as is the market area to the north running along and off Hang Dao Street. An evening there settles the Hanoi versus Ho Chi Minh City debate very easily on the side of the former: its decaying but dignified French-colonial architecture, street life and laid-back atmosphere make it an easy winner. And after a lively evening of great food, live music and Ha Noi beer, it’s a real treat to retire to your Metropole room and the sumptuous depths of its Sofitel Mybed. Northern Vietnam’s most famous tourist attraction, the karst islets and pinnacles of Ha Long Bay, is four hours by car from Hanoi, though the Israeli prime minister opts to go by helicopter. The bay is said to have in the region of 2,000 limestone islands, depending on the definition – some are really large rocks, while others are quite sizeable and support fishing communities. The jagged grey crags topped with lush vegetation set against the

blue-green waters of the bay have earned the area a listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site, though that status is by no means unusual these days. What is remarkable is the bay’s beauty; and as one of Earth’s natural wonders it should be on the itinerary of any trip to Vietnam. I last visited Ha Long bay eight years ago, from the vantage point of a sizeable, upmarket cruise liner. Back then, the numerous vessels that sailed from the ports to the east of Hai Phong for overnight trips among the islands looked a little down at heel, in some cases barely seaworthy. No longer. Of the many high-end craft that now ply the waters, those in the Paradise Cruise fleet are particularly plush. Ours – the 31-cabin Paradise Elegance 1 – was launched in the spring of this year and is the only boat of its kind based in Ha Long Bay to offer fivestar amenities such as near-roundthe-clock room service, fine à la carte dining, a piano bar with live music, and beautifully appointed, generously roomy 25-squaremetre cabins with balconies and all mod cons. For those not arriving on liners, this is the way to see the bay. The Elegance’s chosen spot for the night is Coconut Island, though

185 by dawn it becomes apparent that it’s also favoured by 30 other vessels, albeit a respectable distance away. From Coconut Island, Paradise Cruises offers a selection of activities such as kayaking through sea arches and caves and the chance to spot golden-headed langur monkeys and their ginger infants, while on-board diversions include massage, cooking classes, tai chi on the sundeck and the opportunity to make a fool of yourself at the karaoke microphone.

The success of the awardwinning Paradise fleet means it’s growing. The Elegance 1 now has a sister vessel, while the engagingly named Paradise Prestige is also new, a wooden vessel with junk sails. Typically, guests book for either one- or two-night trips, though charters are available. However, the distance of the embarkation and disembarkation point – Tuan Chau island – from Hanoi and other major tourist points means that an increasing number of visitors choose to stay on land for a few more days. Paradise has answered this demand by building a suite of resort hotels on the island – the Paradise Suites and Paradise Trend hotels. The former comprises 78 suites (and has a truly sumptuous spa) and is in a more classical style than the Trend, which has 78 rooms with an edgier, more contemporary feel. Combining a trip around the bay with a few nights at one of the hotels gives visitors the chance to explore the sights on land as well as at sea, and indulge themselves with a spot of pampering between sampling the many varied attractions this part of the world has to offer.

186 z Elegant on the outside and glamorous within, the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe is an engaging mix of old-school grace and contemporary tech, writes jon wall z

after disporting ourselves during the past 10 months aboard a succession of ever faster and more powerful automobiles, perhaps at this juncture we should turn down the boost just a tad. For here we are, already well into autumn, and it seems to me that Keats’ “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” might not be the most appropriate time of year in which to be careening hither and thither across the landscape like a screeching, demented bat. So, for this month’s ride, I was looking for something more relaxed, refined and elegant. Something that’s certainly not sluggish, yet is neither ridiculously rapid. Something with presence, but is by no means in your face. And something that contrives to be both subtle and eye-catching, that whispers wealth, ease and perhaps even a certain stolidity, while never vulgarly proclaiming its occupants’ good fortune too stridently. That seemed like a tall order, until the kind people at Daimler asked whether I’d feel like spending a long weekend in the company of their Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe, and

suddenly I had exactly what I was looking for. For Benz – and I’m not talking about its hyperactive AMG offshoot here, or the company’s stunning run of successes in Grand Prix racing in the past four years – was for decades as much a byword for rugged dependability as it was for a particularly Teutonic take on discreet but practical luxury (and, so the neighbours wouldn’t gossip overly, not too much of the latter either). And in several key aspects, this two-door version of Merc’s latest executive-segment saloon turned out to be as sensible a take on the concept of the posh coupe-cruiser as were its antecedents of half a century ago or more. It may seem odd to talk about practicality when referring to a car that’s as inherently frivolous as a four-seat, two-door coupe, but the new-generation E Coupe scores massively in this respect when compared with its immediate predecessor. For although entry and egress for rear passengers are inevitably constrained by the glaring absence of a pair of apertures, unlike the earlier car, which was built on the platform of the smaller C-Class, the latest model shares its underpinnings with the highly rated (and considerably larger) E saloon. It thus offers so much more room that it can comfortably accommodate a quartet of full-size adults, who can now emerge after a lengthy stint on board without feeling as if they’d been imprisoned in a packing case for hours on end.

Another distinctive aspect of the E Coupe’s interior – and I’ve been raving about Mercedes cabins for some time now – is just how fabulous it is. Forget any notions of Germanic severity, for this is pure Hollywood glamour, from the twin 12.3-inch Widescreen Cockpit displays that take up much of the sweeping fascia, to the six exquisitely jewelled air vents that resemble jet-engine intakes, the door-mounted grilles of the 23-speaker Burmester sound system (which, like the hi-res infotainment screens, is

an option box that most buyers are likely to tick), and the 64-shade, coloured ambient lighting. The seats, clad in leather on the test car, are as comfortable and supportive as anyone could reasonably wish for; along with the excellent driving position and the almost total absence of exterior noise in the superbly insulated cabin, they lend strong credibility to the Coupe’s ambitions of being a pukka grand tourer. The E-Class Coupe may not be perfectly proportioned on the outside – there’s a little too much flab around the hips for that – but it’s undeniably one of the best-looking designs in the current Mercedes line-up, and especially so

when optioned with the AMG body kit, which adds a front apron, side sills, a diffuser-like rear end and 19inch, five-spoke alloys to its exterior. Indeed, my only real issue with the styling concerns the fixed rear quarter-lights, whose frames mar an otherwise unbroken expanse of glass – or air, whenever the screens are lowered – at each side of the car. To be fair, this aesthetic shortcoming isn’t especially hard to live with, and in any case it can be somewhat camouflaged by specifying smoked windows at the rear. Accoutred in AMG bling, the E is purposeful and even aggressive, which these days is how we expect our cars to appear, no matter how inoffensive they may be beneath the skin. So, while the reality is that this coupe isn’t quite the low-flying missile that its looks suggest, nor can it be called a slowcoach.


It wasn’t very long ago that a “3” at the beginning of a Mercedes model number generally denoted the existence of a 3-litre six beneath its bonnet, but today any such linkage is likely to be coincidental. Thus, the E 300 is powered by a relatively modest turbocharged 2-litre four, which here is good for more than 240bhp and a reasonably gruntworthy 370Nm (and as the latter is available from a minuscule 1,300rpm, it’s hugely flexible too). If you’re the kind of driver who enjoys laying down rubber at traffic lights, this 1,685kg machine will canter from a standstill to 100km/h in a brisk 6.4 seconds and eventually – if you’re fortunate enough to have an autobahn at the end of your road – run out of steam at an electronically governed 250. The engine is smooth and unobtrusive at motorway cruising speeds, though start-up and hard acceleration do induce a discernible

four-pot dissonance. Much of that tends to be dialled out in normal use by the Merc’s silken nine-speed 9G-Tronic transmission, but as the motor’s noisier exertions do rather jar with the car’s svelte lines and ultra-urbane persona, you’ll probably find yourself resisting the temptation to switch the Dynamic Select controller to Sport, in which mode the power unit is likely to be at its most voluble. (And if you absolutely can’t live without a six-cylinder under the bonnet, there’s always the option of an E 400 Coupe to consider.) Otherwise, the E-Class is as refined as its sleek silhouette portends. Its computerised, self-levelling air suspension flattens undulations admirably, and though the boulevardier orientation means it’s clearly not a sports car, both

handling and grip are reassuringly predictable and can translate into surprisingly rapid progress. And though you may decide that its steering lacks the scalpel sharpness of a two-seat roadster’s, or that the helm could benefit from a little more feel, you’ll almost certainly be engaged by the way the Coupe can be hustled precisely through a sequence of corners, and by its unflappable air of composure. And that, in a nutshell, is the key to the Mercedes-Benz E 300 Coupe’s appeal. It isn’t a car that screams for attention through daredevil speed and pyrotechnics. Instead, it charms more discreetly: lovely (almost) on the outside and alluring within, it offers grace, comfort, quiet and even an unusual degree of practicality to its privileged passengers. If that makes it sound a trifle old-fashioned, so be it – I, however, prefer to think of it as a modern classic.

meets TAG Heuer’s new Art Provocateur

sporting a hat, with his face masked by a bandana, graffiti artist Alec Monopoly surely stands out in a crowd. When he visited Jakarta in September, we sat down with TAG Heuer’s new Art Provocateur for an enthralling interview. Alec (real name Alec Andon) greeted us warmly and, once there were no photographers around, unmasked and started talking about how he began his street-art career in his hometown of New York City. In 2008, he quit the Big Apple for California. That was the year the markets imploded. The subprime crisis, the new Wall Street crash, fraudster Bernie Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme,... the world of high finance experienced its darkest days since the 1930s. All this found an echo in Alec’s work, and his career took off. People started calling him Mr. Monopoly, after the diminutive and debonair banker who appears in many of his paintings. He has depicted the banker in every conceivable situation and his rich, colourful works are filled with dark humour. Alec has turned his focus towards reimagining other icons of popular culture, such as Scrooge McDuck and Richie Rich. Movie stars like Robert De Niro, Adrien Brody and Seth Rogen have bought his confrontational paintings. How did Alec feel about being asked by TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver last year to become one of the company’s brand ambassadors? “I saw it as a perfect opportunity to combine my artistic abilities with my love of timepieces,” he replies. “I’ve always had a passion for beautiful watches and it started kind of organically with Jean-Claude. When we first met, he told me he was collecting some of my works, and we really hit it off. It was just a beautiful beginning. “As Art Provocateur, I’m a brand ambassador. But I’m also more of an Art Director for TAG Heuer. I create artworks for the company, and we are transforming boutiques into art galleries, which is something that’s never been done before. For me, to be a graffiti artist working in the brand’s manufacture in Switzerland is amazing. It’s also been a lifelong dream of mine to design my own watches and to have my artwork on the dial of a new model, which we have coming out soon.” It seems that Alec was born to be an artist. “My mom is an artist,” he says. “She taught me all the skills. Ever since I can remember, art has always been a part of me. Also, growing up in New York, it’s a way of life to be involved in the street art scene because it’s part of the culture of the city. I always wanted to be an artist.

I knew early on that was my passion. It was what I wanted to do as my life, my career. “When I was in my teens I was skateboarding and doing graffiti in the streets. Later, I had an art show in New York and that’s when the police started catching up with me. They actually came to my show and they tried to arrest me, and that’s why I now cover my face and hide my identity. It’s for all the illegal graffiti that I’ve done in the past, because in the States they’re very strict about it. That’s when I ran from New York and went to Los Angeles, where they’re a little more lenient. And there are a lot more walls to paint since L.A. is a huge city. At first, I was just kind of hiding out, but then I ended up living there.” What was it like being on the wrong side of the law and being arrested? “It’s the worst!,” Alec replies. “Having your freedom taken away, and you have zero inspiration there. But now, I’ve grown up and I’ve learned a lot. I express my art in more of a positive way, and when I do graffiti murals, I usually get permission first or it’s on an abandoned building that no one really cares about. I’m a lot more cautious now. “I think it’s good that street art is becoming much more accepted nowadays. But at the same time, if it was allowed everywhere it wouldn’t be as much fun. I kind of like the aspect of breaking the law and running. I think that’s what makes it interesting.” Has he ever been accused of selling out by collaborating with big brands? “That’s how people can see it,” Alec agrees. “But they should see what I’m painting, the subject matter. I think it’s kind of funny that anyone can go, ‘Oh, you’re selling out’. But see first what my work is really about. And for me, I’m very selective about the brands I work with. So, it’s not like I work with just any brand. TAG Heuer is a very cool brand. I’ve been a fan of their watches forever, and it’s part of my dream to create my own watch. Some people can say what they want, but I’m just living my dream.” What does TAG Heuer’s Art Provocateur hope to achieve in the future? “Early on, the goal was to do a museum show and to be immortalised in art history,” says Alec. “Now, it’s more about giving back. You know, inspiring the next generation and doing charity work. I recently did a piece for hurricane relief in Houston. A lot of my friends were affected by it. I auctioned a painting to raise funds. It’s not easy to create an artwork, it takes a lot of time. But it is easy to raise money from selling a painting and give it back.”

198 Never before has the “Art et Elégance Richard Mille” event at the Château de Chantilly, held this year from September 9-10, demonstrated so spectacularly why it bears its name. Art lovers were thrilled with the kick-off to this year’s gathering: the inauguration of an exhibition dedicated to Poussin’s world-renowned painting “Le Massacre des Innocents”. The most talented young singers and dancers from Chantilly led guests round the park on their way to the exhibition with songs and artistic happenings, the brainchild of Mélanie Treton-Monceyron, the brand’s Artistic

director. In front of the château, they were treated to a stunning mise en scène of dali’s “Metamorphosis of Narcissus”, and inside the museum itself the highlight was undoubtedly a moving rendition of “hallelujah” in front of Picasso’s “Charnier”. The work, one of many inspired by Poussin’s original, had been brought back specially to Chantilly, with Richard Mille’s support, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Elegance was in no short supply either at this, the fourth edition of the world-class automobile contest, attracting over 16,000 visitors, a 20 percent increase in turnout. Ninety classic cars competed in the Concours d’Etat and close to 800 in the Grand Prix des Clubs. Saturday’s first rally brought together vehicles entered in the Concours d’Etat, while the second

consisted of similarly rare - but much sportier -supercars. McLaren provided a fascinating introduction to its range on the challenging Mortefontaine circuit. On display were the most famous electric cars in automobile history, from 1899 to the present: the renowned Jamais-Contente from 1899, the first vehicle ever to clear 100 km/hr, and the avant-garde Porsche Mission E, boasting 600 hp and a 500-km range. A highlight of this edition was the celebration of Ferrari’s 70th anniversary, fêted with a display of around 30 of its creations, all of which participated in the Le Mans 24 hours. A legendary

Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa stood side by side with a 250 GTO. The 330 P4, 312 P and 512 S Spyder were lined up on lawns which were designed by none other than Le Nôtre himself! VIP spotters will not have been disappointed either with sightings of eminent Richard Mille partners, such as Mutaz Barshim, Felipe Massa, Romain Grosjean, Jean Todt, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Alain Prost. Friends of the brand also visited, didier drogba, Eric Boullier and Frédéric Sausset among them, all relaxing in the dedicated Richard Mille lounge around a delahaye MS 135 coupé Chapron 1937 and serenaded by French music from the Belle Epoque. It was on Sunday, after a stunning equestrian show performed by Mario Lurashi and his team, that the judges, including FIA president Jean Todt, bestowed the Richard Mille Concours d’Élégance prizes on the Renault Trezor, an electric-drive sport coupe GT, and the Citroën CXperience & Yang Li. The prize for Best of Show was conferred on the unbelievable Bugatti 57 S Atlantic (1936) in the Pre-War class, and the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa (1958) in the Post-War category. The Concours des Clubs distinguished the Fiat Fan Club for the quality of its refreshments, as well as its mise-en-scene of the traditional garden-party picnic. Never have art and elegance come together in such a stunning way, setting the bar very high indeed for the next edition.

Cindy Crawford and other celebrities visited Paris in September for the launch of Omega’s “Her Time” exhibition, a celebration of beautiful ladies’ watches amid the fanfare of Fashion Week. Peter Zewet reports

Hôtel de Sully, a historic private mansion in Le Marais in Paris, was the latest venue for Omega’s “Her Time” exhibition, which has been showcased in Milan, Moscow, Shanghai and Sydney. Demonstrating the company’s dedication to ladies’ watchmaking for over 100 years, the exhibition displayed the evolution of women’s timepieces at Omega: from early Lepine pendants to the secret jewellery watches of the 1920s, and to today’s Ladymatic and Constellation models. The line-up of watches on display was complemented by examples of vintage artwork and Omega advertising, all of which showed women in a variety of lifestyles and fashions throughout the years. There were three display areas, each representing different eras. Iconic timepieces were displayed in glass bell jars, while discoverable drawers featured vintage advertisements. The opening night of the exhibition on September 29 was a grand affair, attended by celebrities and clients from all over the world. “Omega’s women’s watches

reveal some of the most beautiful designs in our history,” said Raynald Aeschlimann, the company’s President and CEO. “There is so much variety and artistry. I’m so proud to bring this exhibition to Paris, one of the world’s homes of fashion.” He was joined on stage by one of Omega’s closest friends, Cindy Crawford. The supermodel has been associated with Omega since 1995 and is the company’s longestserving brand ambassador. She brought along her children, Kaia and Presley, who have become the brand’s newest ambassadors. While having Kaia and Presley join Omega can be perceived as a great way for the company to become

more relevant to the younger market, it’s also a move that makes perfect sense because of the enduring relationship Cindy has had with Omega. Then came a short afternoon break at a hidden coffee shop, a quiet time she used to select photos taken from her favourite camera. Then, she ended her day visiting a Wayang Kulit, a traditional shadow puppetry workshop, even trying to be a puppet master herself. Director Raditya Bhramanta wrapped up the shooting of the video in one day. “The main concept of the video was a play of time and lighting,” he said. “The shooting process was very tight but it was not difficult thanks to Adinia and the team. “Asti is one of the reasons I agreed to take on this project. I had always wanted to work with her. Indeed, I have idolised her for a long time! It was easy working with her. not only was she professional, she also fully understood the Javanese elements of the story we created for the video.” The video premiered in September and is available on PrestigeOnline.com and the Prestige YouTube channel.

Jamiroquai played some live – and very loud! – funk and acid jazz. and the impressive “Ferrari setanta” came to a growling grandstand finish amid an emotional, ear-splitting, pyrotechnic spectacle starring a plethora of revved-up Ferrari models. But the real highpoint of Ferrari’s spectacular 70th anniversary Celebration Ceremony at the Fiorano Circuit in Maranello in northern italy on the evening of saturday, september 9 was a tribute to the company’s legendary Formula One drivers – past and present. although sebastian vettel and Kimi raikkonen, Ferrari’s current top drivers, made brief appearances on stage, the biggest roar of the evening was reserved for someone who couldn’t be there. While an incessant downpour of rain was soaking the circuit outside, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as a moving presentation honouring Michael schumacher unfolded. the segment summed up the incredible career of Ferrari’s greatest F1 hero. the only driver in history to win seven F1 World Championships, five of them consecutively, “schumi” was seriously injured in a skiing accident in 2013. “#Keep fighting Michael” was the defiant and hopeful message at the end of a presentation that brought a proud and enthusiastic audience of some 4,000

Ferrari fans to its feet. the carefully planned and dramatically executed show in Maranello, birthplace of Ferrari and location of its state-of-the-art factory today, looked back more than 70 years to the days when enzo anselmo Ferrari resumed his career after the conclusion of the second World War. enzo’s passion was designing racing cars. in March 1947, he took the first official Ferrari, the 125 s, out for a test drive. it went well. the marque scored its first win that year, at the rome Grand Prix, and went on to notch victories at the Mille Miglia in 1948, the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1949 and the British Grand Prix in 1951. in 1952 and 1953, Ferrari driver alberto ascari won the world racing championship. not just in italy, Ferrari celebrated its 70th year as a carmaker with events worldwide. there were Ferrari car shows, Concours and racing events all over, and the importers and their dealers held events in their respective countries. as Ferrari is all about driving your car, owners were encouraged to take part in an anniversary rally. Carlo and rome, 450 Ferraris drove in style to Milan, where they attended a lavish gala on Friday september 8. next morning, they drove to Parma for lunch, and from there they drove together to Maranello, to be greeted by hundreds of Ferrari fans along the way. after arriving in Maranello, all cars where directed to the Fiorano circuit to be parked for the weekend. the most impressive drive came from an american, Mark Davies, who flew his 1958 250 Gt LWB tour de France (0895 Gt) from new york to London, and drove from there on the rally to Maranello for 1,200 miles without any problem. On the same saturday morning, more than 100 classic Ferraris awaited their start of the events in Maranello. they were invited to take a tour to Modena for lunch at the Military academy of Modena, as it was here that Francesco Baracca (from who’s family enzo obtained his Prancing horse emblem) received his military education. Under police escort, about 80 participants first drove through the centre of Maranello and from there

to Modena, where they passed the Casa enzo Ferrari museum alongside enzo’s place of birth in 1898. From there, it was off to the Military academy in Modena. in typical italian style, all cars were parked in front of the academy, where the local citizens turned out en masse to enjoy the cars. after lunch, the cars drove back to Maranello to be parked and made ready for judging in the Concorso D’eleganza. it was in the 1950s that Ferrari began producing cars for road use, with the rich and famous lining up for a chance to purchase one of these dazzling vehicles. there were plenty of eager bidders on hand when Ferrari and rM sotheby’s teamed up to hold “Leggende e Passione”, an auction of Ferraris whose owners included Keith richards of the rolling stones, during the saturday afternoon preceding the big show. thirty-eight cars were sold for a total of Us$74.5 million. the highlight was a LaFerrari aperta that sold for Us$8.3 million to benefit save the Children. On the morning of sunday, september 10 a dryingout circuit saw the launch of the 2017 Concorso

With Ferrari board members Piero Ferrari, John elkann and sergio Marchionne on stage, the two winners were announced: ronald stern with his testarossa spider one-off for Gianni agnelli (62897) for best in Gt and the 1953 Mille Miglia winning 340 MM vignale spyder of Umberto Camellini (0280 aM) won Best of show Competition. and so ended the stylish and emotional celebrations of Ferrari’s anniversary. here’s to the next 70 years!

The quiet, refined 67-suite luxury resort has certainly brought the neighborhood’s glamour quotient up a notch with the opening of this splendid 36-seater watering hole. gone is the more casual Ocean Bar, and in its place is a more illuminated drinking venue with an impressive list of tipples and light bites. Think Cristal, Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot and Billecart Salmon paired with caviars and canapés. The thatched hut comes with tasteful wicker furniture, while daybeds have been placed fronting the ocean for those who

want to sip their cocktails while admiring the view. The new lounge has become one of the resort’s main draws, says Panchaud. Open from 8 a.m. to 12 midnight daily, The Ocean Champagne Bar has become a favorite hub for jazz fans thanks to its Thursday and Sunday live entertainment. The place is an intimate venue for people looking to unwind and experience a quieter side of Seminyak. “it’s a relaxing atmosphere here, where the sea and music mingle together,” says the gM. Other than the bar, guests at The Legian Bali can also look forward to spending time at The Spa, a beachfront rejuvenating area made of teak and decked in earth-toned hues. Using award-winning products, the sanctuary offers signature treatments such as massages, body scrubs, and wraps. guests can also indulge in the resort’s warm and cool indoor plunge pools or spend an hour in their sauna and steam rooms. Sessions in yoga, Pilates, and
