ANTIGUA, THE HOST CITY Antigua Guatemala is located 45 km from Guatemala City. It was the third capital established by the Spaniards. It was named City of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala in 1566. After pestilences, earthquakes and floods, the telluric movement of 1773 finally destroyed it. In spite of having been a proscribed and abandoned city to create a new capital, its inhabitants gradually gave it life again and today it is one of the main tourist attractions in Guatemala. It is a jewel of urbanism and colonial architecture, which retains its characteristics, as if time had stopped there. Because of its immense historical and cultural value, it was declared by UNESCO "World Heritage" in 1979. Cobbled streets, old and colorful walls, wooden doors, magical fountains, tile roofs, great patios‌ Antigua is the perfect city to host our training. Get ready for morning walks from the lodging to the venue, and get amazed with the volcanoes views while you walk through the streets of Antigua with your friends.Â

TIPS Antigua is a touristic city, so they accept dollars US$ in almost every establishment.

We suggest you not to change your dollars in the airport. Uber is a peer-to-peer ridesharing service. It is available from Guatemala to Antigua, and inside both cities. Antigua is a mild-to-cold weather city; we suggest you to bring your hoodies.

VENUE

COLEGIO MAYOR SANTO TOMÁS DE AQUINO The Colegio Mayor Santo Tomás de Aquino was a major college, run by the Dominican friars in Santiago de Guatemala, whose origin dates back to 1562. It served as the first seat of the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, the first University in Guatemala and Central America. The beginning of the school originated on March 9, 1562, when Bishop Francisco Marroquín and the friars Tomás de Cárdenas and Diego Martínez, representing the Convent of Santo Domingo, signed an agreement for the foundation of a school, in which the children of poor Spaniards learned Philosophy, Theology and Canons. The inaugural lesson was pronounced on October 20th, 1620, and was dictated by Deán Felipe Ruíz de Corral, professor of Theology. In addition to the civil, political and religious authorities, the 77 registered students attended the event. In 1631, the employers of the school closed the doors of it, because in repeated occasions, the Crown had not authorized the requested promotion form the College to become an University. In 1669, the Dominicans opened again the doors of the school, so as not to hinder their transformation into a university. Finally, on January 31st, 1979, the Spaniard Crown authorized the College to be transformed into Universidad de San Carlos. Once the center of education, culture and science of Antigua, Guatemala and Central America, the Colegio Mayor Santo Tomás de Aquino will open the doors once again to science and culture, hosting our training sessions. Old walls, ancient rooms, big wooden doors, stone paved patios, gardens and fountains will welcome us and set the perfect atmosphere to our trainings.
