PMA 2012 Conference: From Strategy to Delivery
Background and aims The PMA 2012 Conference will return to Cambridge, UK, from 11 - 13 July 2012 at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge. PMA 2012 will build on the successes of previous international conferences, the most recent of which was hosted at the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2009.
Who should attend Performance measurement and management is a diverse field of study. One of the greatest strengths of the PMA series of conferences is that they attract people from very diverse backgrounds. Delegates and presenters are expected from a range of academic disciplines and from both the academic and practitioner communities. Anyone interested in performance measurement – either from a research or practice perspective – will find PMA 2012 a stimulating and rewarding conference in which to participate.
Location The conference will be held at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge from 11-13 July 2012. The college is a few minutes from the city centre and the famous Cambridge Backs. The city of Cambridge is compact and easy to get around, and there is always something new to see and do with historic and modern buildings to visit, world-renowned museums, theatre and live music, and of course, the opportunity to try your hand at punting. The University and its 31 colleges dominate the centre with atmospheric cobbled courts, chapels, gardens and bridges. Cambridge has a wide range of of independent shops and boutiques as well as the high street favourites contained in modern shopping centres, and the traditional bustling stalls of the outdoor markets.
The theme for PMA2012 is Performance Management: From Strategy to Delivery. Exploring the latest thinking and research into how to connect strategy to delivery, through technology, systems and process, the conference will be mixture of keynote and plenary presentations, as well as parallel streams and discussion groups. Delegates and presenters are expected from a range of academic disciplines, as well as the business and public sector communities. The aim of the PMA conference is to bring together those who want to explore and better understand the role that performance measurement and management plays in improving organisational performance. No other conference better facilitates dialogue in the field of performance measurement, providing such a rare opportunity for academics and practitioners to meet and exchange ideas. The highly successful PMA series of conferences has been running since 1998. This time we are fortunate to have secured two world-class keynote speakers, Howard Dresner, a widely regarded expert in business intelligence and Professor Gerhard Satzger, IBM’s Director of Business Performance Services, Europe. Typically up to one third of participants at
the PMA conference come from practice, while two thirds are drawn from academia. Attendees come from all over the globe and have diverse backgrounds and perspectives, which makes the event particularly fascinating given the diversity of views held and shared by participants. The conference is organised on behalf of the Performance Management Association (PMA) by the University of Cambridge. The conference co-chairs are Professor Andy Neely from the University of Cambridge and Professor Mike Bourne from Cranfield School of Management. As in previous years the conference will commence with a Welcome Reception, followed by two and a half days of parallel stream paper presentations. Keynote presentations are delivered on each day and additional plenary sessions will be held throughout the event. The principal aim of the conference is to provide a unique interdisciplinary and international forum for the exchange of cutting-edge knowledge and research about organizational performance measurement within both the public and private sectors. Abstract submission details Submission of abstracts for the conference will be handled electronically via the conference website. To submit an abstract for PMA 2012 please register on the Oxford Abstracts system and follow the submission instructions. The deadline for submitting abstracts is 31 January 2012. Decisions regarding abstract acceptance will be based on the recommendations of a blind review process, although the Conference Officers will make the final decision.
Conference proceedings All accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings. Following the conference selected best papers will be invited to submit a full paper for inclusion in an edited book and a special issue of an international journal.
Abstract Submissions Academic research submissions: An extended abstract of between 750-1000 words is required, which is to be submitted by 31 January 2012. This should include an indication of the literature covered, the research question being investigated, the methodology used, as well as an indication of the findings and conclusions. The abstract should reflect the intended presentation. Academic Research Abstract Evaluation Criteria: 1. Relevance to Performance Measurement and Management 2. Relevance to the themes identified for the conference 3. Originality of the research 4. Appropriateness of the methodology 5. Contribution to the state of knowledge (theory and practice) 6. Clarity of the abstract
Practical application submissions: We encourage submissions from practitioners and work reporting collaborative research. An extended abstract of between 750-1000 words is required, which is to be submitted by 31 January 2012. This should reflect the intended presentation. Practical Application Abstract Evaluation Criteria: 1. Relevance to Performance Measurement and Management 2. Relevance to the themes identified for the conference
3. Importance of the lessons learned 4. Potential contribution to future applications 5. Contribution to the state of knowledge 6. Clarity of the abstract All abstracts will be double blind reviewed and acceptance for presentation will be made subject to recommendations of the reviewers. Decisions regarding paper acceptance will be based on the recommendations of a blind review process, although the Conference Officers will make the final decision. All submissions must be original, not presented at other conferences, published or under publication elsewhere. Acceptance will be based on the quality, methodological rigor and relevance to the central themes of the Conference.
Invited panels / workshops In addition to traditional presentations we are keen to allow space on the agenda for discussion workshops and panels. If you are interested in proposing a workshop or panel to run throughout the conference please submit your proposal by 15 December 2011. This proposal (which should be 1000 words maximum) should explain the aims of the symposium/stream; who will be participating and what role they will play. Conference Activities The conference itself will comprise a mixture of plenary and parallel sessions. Details of additional panel sessions workshops will be posted on the conference website. There will be a prize for the best paper. A Welcome Reception will be held on the evening of 11 July and the Conference Dinner will be held on 12 July 2012.

It is essentially a voluntary network which has a multidisciplinary constituency covering accounting, economics, engineering, finance, HR, IT, logistics, marketing, operations, purchasing, sales, strategy etc. Its development and continued growth is overseen by a board of leading academics in the fields of performance measurement and management. Members from both the academic and business communities benefit from the Performance Measurement Association. The ability to share knowledge and pool resources is fundamental, enabling members to keep up to date in a field that is developing and moving at a rapid rate. Conference Organisers:
The registration fee will entitle each participant to a copy of the Conference Proceedings, lunches, refreshments, the Welcome Reception and Conference Dinner. Early registration fee (up to 31 March 2012) will be £415 pounds sterling including VAT. After this date the registration fee will be £475 pounds sterling including VAT. Accommodation booking details
The Conference Announcement and Call for Papers are correct at the time of printing. However the Conference Organisers reserve the right to make alterations without prior notice.
Accommodation will be available at Fitzwilliam College for the nights of Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 July 2012. The rooms are ensuite (with shower) and have tea and coffee making facilities and internet access. The cost will be £85 per night, and you can book on-line with conference registration.
