IFC VP of Recruitment's Letter Welcome potential new members and families!

Congratulations on deciding to take the first step towards becoming a part of University of Wisconsin - Madison’s Fraternity and Sorority Life community. Our community is built upon the pillars of friendship, leadership, academics, and service. The interfraternal community at UW - Madison is composed of campus and community student leaders, high-achieving scholars, community activists, and innovators. If you choose to become a part of the fraternal experience, you will avail yourself of a vast range of involvement and development opportunities that will augment all facets of your undergraduate experience.

As you embark on your journey to learn more about fraternity life and the chapters here on campus, the Interfraternity Council and I are here to help you. We encourage you to remain true to the values you hold dear. Do not try to change yourself to fit a stereotypical mold of a fraternity member. Fraternity men have a responsibility to hold themselves and others accountable. Seek a chapter that aligns with your values, goals, and desires for your undergraduate experience. Being in a fraternity is a lifelong commitment and a personal choice, so take the time to reflect and understand what you are looking to achieve.

President's Letter Hello Potential New Members, It is my honor to introduce you to one of the most transformative journeys that you could go on during your time at UW-Madison. Becoming a fraternity man will lead to moments of great growth and change; realizing what is important to you and teaching you values that will carry on through the rest of your life. I emphasize the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone and exploring as many houses as possible, each house provides an incredible experience that could lead to one of the greatest adventures of your life. This is a time of great growth and learning, so any chance you get to expand your knowledge and worldview, take that big step forward!

Outside of the proper mindset, let it sink in that there’s a mission to being a Fraternity Man in IFC. Healthy fraternal experiences and bonds create distinguished men of virtue.

Your compassion will flourish and lead you to develop an array of intrinsic moral values in which some will be common principles and some unique to you, but it won’t be trivial. Like the men who’ve come before you, it will be on you and your fellow fraternity brothers to act on those values whether it be your chapter philanthropy cause or how you manage conflict within your organization. However, let it be known that to get everything out of this experience it is up to you to take that leap forward, try something new, and meet all of those new people. Taking those necessary steps will help you become the greatest man you can be and make a great change in the world. I will leave you with this, be yourself, be true, and be the man you dream to be.

Meet the Team The University of Wisconsin - Madison, Interfraternity Council serves as the governing body for the 28 men's social fraternities on campus. Every year the chapters elect 10 representative members to serve as the executive board of the IFC The purpose of the council is to not only promote fellowship within the fraternity community, but also to set standards and governing expectations and policies for members of our chapters to abide by.

Office of Fraterinty & Sorority Life For 150 years students have called Fraternity and Sorority life “home” and today the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) at University of Wisconsin-Madison supports over 60 organizations that makeup 5,000 members. The office provides fraternities and sororities with a wide range of services and programs including but not limited to council advising, chapter coaching, leadership development programs, organizational workshop, harm prevention resources, social justice education, and initiatives. Community overview Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)

National Pan-Hallenic Council (NPHC)

The MGC is the governing body for multicultural and multiethnic, also known as cultural-based, fraternities and sororities at UW-Madison. The mission of the Multicultural Greek Council is to foster a unified multicultural community, to promote scholarship, service, respect, camaraderie, and cultural awareness, while creating an inclusive and supportive network for future growth and development.

The NPHC is the governing body of the traditionally African American fraternities and sororities, also known as the Divine Nine. NPHC coordinates activities to develop leadership skills, positive relationships, and citizenship through community service and outreach. Organizations that are part of NPHC embrace the continuance of social actions, political empowerment, and economic development.

Interfraterinty Council (IFC) The IFC is the governing body for the majority of North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) fraternities on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. IFC consists of men’s fraternities; the IFC is a self-governing student organization seeking to develop and maintain fraternity life and interfraternal relations by promoting unity and growth of its member organizations.

Panhellenic Association (PHA) The PHA is the governing body for fourteen women’s organizations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. PHA is responsible for organizing programming and educational opportunities, and implementing primary recruitment for supporting the Panhellenic community. They proudly strive for individual excellence in scholarship and leadership, and promote community building through citizenship and fellowship.

MGC & NPHC Intake Process Both MGC and NPHC do not host a formal intake (recruitment) process. Each organization is responsible for their own unique recruitment processes and events, all of which welcomes people from various cultures, identities, and backgrounds. Chapters intake new members throughout the year, and the new membership requirements and programs vary. If there is interest in a particular organization, contacting the organization's new membership/rush chair would be the first step.

Fraterinty Governance North American Interfraterinty Conference (NIC) & Interfraterinty Council The North American Interfraternity Conference, or NIC, is the governing body that oversees all Interfraternity Councils in the United States and Canada. The Interfraternity Council, or IFC, is a student-led governing body that oversees its member chapters. The purpose of the IFC is to advance fraternity on campus and provide inter-fraternal leadership to the entire UW-Madison sorority and fraternity community. The IFC Executive Board acts as the bridge between the university, the public, and our fraternal community. As fraternity men, it is our mission to promote and embody leadership in action, academic excellence, strong bonds of brotherhood, and service to the community.

Each member of the IFC community pays dues to the IFC council to cover educational programming, intramural sports, health & safety initiatives including insurance, recruitment, and much more. The current cost is $15.00 per active member and $20.00 per new member each semester. Chapters typically gather these funds through membership dues, as IFC charges each chapter based on total membership each semester.

UW-Madison & IFC Relationship The Interfraternity Council serves as the bridge between the university, the public, and our fraternal community. The IFC council is closely connected to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to ensure the health and safety of all students who belong and interact with IFC fraternities. IFC and all its member organizations must be and are registered student organizations with UW-Madison, and are expected to follow university guidelines in addition to IFC governing documents including, but not limited to, student code of conduct, registered student organizations guidelines, and all state/federal laws.

The Interfraternity Council additionally works in close collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards to ensure accountability and encourage healthy behavior with the IFC community. Fraternity experience Benefits of joining a UW-Madison recognized fraternity within IFC includes but is not limited to: Leadership roles on the executive board of the Interfraterinty Council (IFC) at University of Wisconsin Madison.

Access to all university reservable spaces and available classrooms for chapter programs, events and meetings.

Support from UW - Madison FSL staff members, including direct chapter coaching, trainings and retreats, recruitment and continued member education Ability to participate in Wisconsin Intramural League Sports through your chapter membership.

Ability to host social events with other student organizations including Panhellenic sororities.

Support from the IFC including chapter and community programming, event management, individual scholarships and voting rights on all council and community decisions.

Support from a nationally recognized fraternity including staff visits, chapter and individual member insurance coverage, annual/biannual conventions and leadership programs and alumni networks.

Organizations that choose to operate without UW Madison recognition do not have the same rights and privileges as IFC fraternities, and do not receive the same benefits listed above. Organizations that choose to operate without university recognition, lose recognition from the university due to violating IFC and student organizations policies putting members and the UW-Madison community in harm's way. Joining a fraternity is more than finding a group of friends. It’s more than having a weekend of fun. Fraternity life is about coming out of your shell and meeting a group of fellow men who share your ideas, ambitions, and morals. It's about confidently becoming your best self in an environment that fosters lifelong friendships, invaluable skills, and responsible social interaction.

Fraternity membership Leadership & Character Throughout fraternity and sorority life, there are various leadership-based opportunities and chances for your talents to shine. Whether that be leading charities or fundraisers for your fraternity, to managing the chapter entirely as its serving President, the opportunities are endless. Leadership is a pillar of fraternity and sorority life that develops students into future professionals. Fraternity and sorority life gives a sense of social identity and cultivates interpersonal skills critical to leadership and collaboration in the post-graduate world.

Life-Long Membership Fraternity and sorority life provides alumni connections and networking opportunities that are unparalleled in other contexts. These networks often prove to be beneficial to students seeking internships, employment, recommendations, or employees. These networks last in and after your college experience, when you join this community. Networking is an integral life-long skill and part of the college experience. There are currently 9 million alumni of fraternities and sororities in the workplace. These connections you foster here in Madison can strike an instant, unexpected connection down the road for landing interviews, references, or letters of recommendations--the possibilities are endless.

Philanthropy & Service Some chapters raise tens of thousands of dollars for Philanthropy-- Fraternity Life prides itself on giving back to our communities via charities or fundraisers, instilling a lasting appreciation for the value of philanthropy and service. Here, one will find a home for their desires to better the community and value both monetary donations and served time to better their local community and aid nationwide organizations.

Fraternity membership Brotherhood & Community It goes without saying that joining fraternity and sorority life is a riveting, unique college experience. Fun is by no means exclusive to fraternity and sorority life, but you will find an unparalleled brotherhood that is fostered in the fraternity experience. Having brothers from various class levels, countries, and different lived experiences provides opportunity to share and develop your values and identities with friendship. You may be surprised to find out that some of your future brothers will be just a block away from your hometown or halfway across the country. This is an invaluable experience for you to step outside of your comfort zone and meet fellow fraternity brothers and sorority sisters that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Scholarship Academics and scholarship are the core of being a fraternity man. We recognize that we are students first! Each chapter emphasizes academic excellence: hosting weekly study hours, creating study groups, and helping one another select courses for the semester. It is rare to not have classes with other members of the fraternity and sorority community, creating a built-in academic support system. The IFC council awards monetary scholarships each semester, one for each class and one first-generation scholarship. Recruitment Exceptions Recruitment Requirements Full time students, enrolled in 12 units at UW-Madison or Madison Area Technical College.

Registered for recruitment through CampusDirector, in order to receive a bid through the IFC sponsored recruitment process

Recruitment Format The IFC Recruitment process typically begins within the first weeks of the semester, exact dates are updated regularly on the IFC website and IFC Instagram. Recruitment lasts about two weeks; it begins with potential new member orientation and IFC tabling events, where all potential new members get the opportunity to meet all IFC chapters. Following the tabling events, the chapter begins hosting open house events where potential new members can attend to get to know each chapter and figure out where they are potentially best fit. Recruitment events typically happen in chapter facilities, but also on-campus spaces and 3rd party venues, like restaurants and activity-based venues. IFC and chapters work to advertise all recruitment events. All recruitment events should be alcohol-free and appropriate, inclusive, and respectful of all backgrounds and identities.

Chapters are not permitted to host recruitment events on religious or cultural holidays including, but not limited to, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Chinese New Year, etc. After the first two weeks, chapters can officially give out bids to all PNM’s. If given a bid, PNM’s then have 4 days to accept or decline. Upon acceptance of a bid, each chapter has a different new member process that leads to admittance into the fraternity. After this initial recruitment period, chapters can also participate in rolling recruitment, which allows them to continue to participate in recruitment and extend bids, until the end of the semester. Each school year there is a spring and fall semester recruitment period.

Recruitment Expectations When participating in IFC recruitment one should expect a lot of interaction with active members in the fraternities. This is both for the active members to get to know you and for you to learn more about the chapter.

Don’t be afraid to go up to a random active member and introduce yourself. This will be the best way for you to get a feel for the chapter and determine which one you most want to join.

Also, use the recruitment events as a chance to get to know other students that are interested in fraternity life on campus and make connections!

Potential New Members - Bill of rights 1. The right to be treated as an individual.

2. The right to be fully informed about the recruitment process.

3. The right to be treated with respect.

4. The right to be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized.

5. The right to ask how and why, and receive straight answers.

6. The right to have at least 96 hours to consider any formal bid offers and to request more time if needed.

7. The right to make informed choices without undue pressure from others.

8. The right to make one’s own choice and decision and accept full responsibility 9. The right to attend recruitment events without the presence of alcohol or other substances.

10. The right to attend recruitment events that are appropriate, inclusive, and respectful of all backgrounds and identities.

11. The right to request current information about all obligations of chapter membership.

12. The right to have a positive, safe and enriching recruitment and new member experience.

FSL SPeak Bid - A formal invitation to join a fraternity.

Rolling Recruitment - The process of recruitment that occurs after the first two weeks of recruitment. During this time select chapters will continue to actively recruit and extend bids throughout the semester. Note, not all chapters will participate in rolling recruitment.

Potential New Member (PNM) - A term used for a student who has shown interest in being recruited by a fraternity or who has registered for the recruitment process.

Tabling - An event at the beginning of each semester where potential new members have the opportunity to speak to representatives/members of all fraternities.

Unrecognized Fraternity - Groups of individuals who have lost their student organization recognition with the University of Wisconsin-Madison because of code of conduct violations. These violations can include but are not limited to hazing, alcohol and illegal substance use, and endangering behaviors. These groups are not associated with the university or IFC. You can find which organizations are not recognized at ifcuw.com.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) - The governing body for university-recognized fraternities at UW-Madison. The council is made up of the president of each fraternity chapter and is led by an Executive Council. The Executive Council is composed of men elected from the member fraternities for 11 positions.

Initiation - The traditional ritual or formal ceremony, special to each organization, of induction, which marks the transition to full membership of a fraternity.

Associate/New Member (Pledge) - A person who has accepted a bid but is not yet initiated into a fraternity.

Chapter - A membership unit of a national fraternity.

FSL SPeak New Member Classes (Pledge Class) - Group of members in an IFC organization who were initiated at the same time in the same organization.

Big Bro/Little bro - Nickname for big and little brother; a big bro is a mentor assigned to a new member.

Dues - The monetary costs of membership in a fraternity. These fees are used to cover the costs of operation, social activities, leadership opportunities, education programs, insurance and other brotherhood events. Cost of membership is different for each organization. Dues tend to be less after the first semester in the chapter.

Legacy - A legacy means that you have an older family member (brother, father, or grandfather) who was a member of a fraternity or sorority organization. Note, you don’t have to be a legacy to join a fraternity.

Active Member - A fully initiated member of a fraternity/sorority.

Alumni/Alum - Member of a fraternity/sorority who has graduated. Alumni may serve as advisors to the chapter or support the fraternity in other volunteer roles.

Chapter Facility or House - A meeting place or residence of a local chapter of a college fraternity or sorority. Majority of IFC chapters have a facility and they are located on Langdon St. and by Camp Randall.

Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life - Is made of professional staff members that work for UW-Madison to support and advise the fraternity and sorority life community.

Recruitment - The two week process through which fraternities get to meet potential new members, and potential new members get to meet fraternities by attending recruitment events held at chapter facilities, on-campus and 3rd party locations.

Unrecognized Groups An “unrecognized” fraternity is one that chooses to exist “off-campus” after the organization had their recognition revoked by the institution or national organization for various reasons, including such things as hazing, alcohol and drug abuse, risk management violations, and failure to comply with University policies and expectations.

Unrecognized groups do not follow University of Wisconsin – Madison or the Interfraterinty council policies and regulations or the requirements and policies of their governing council. In many cases, these organizations seem to operate like recognized organizations, but they are NOT affiliated with the University of Wisconsin. These organizations do not have any of the privileges recognized organizations have earned. The University recommends that students do not join or participate in any sponsored activity by the listed groups.

It is important to understand that if you choose to become a part of an unrecognized organization you will never be recognized by the university. If a student chooses to join an unregistered organization, the University cannot and will not support this choice.

Frequently Asked Questions When is recruitment?

The primary recruitment period start date is determined by the IFC VP of Recruitment and usually occurs during the first two weeks of school for both the spring and fall semesters. Some organizations will continue throughout the semester until the last couple of weeks of classes. Stay up to date on recruitment information and dates at ifcuw.com.

What does the bid process look like?

The bid process is done chapter by chapter basis after the recruitment event period ends. Chapters will reach out to you to extend you a bid. Once you received a bid you will have 96 hours to accept or decline a bid. It is possible to receive more than one bid, but you are only allowed to accept one chapter's bid.

Is there a difference between spring or fall recruitment?

There are no major differences between spring and fall recruitment except for the semester it occurs. Both occur during the first two weeks of their respective semesters.

I am a sophomore, can I still go through recruitment?

Freshmen through seniors are eligible to go through recruitment, with freshmen and sophomores being the most common. Regardless of the entry year, the experience will be the same.

This varies from chapter to chapter and is something that you can see on their individual lookbook pages as well as ask active members throughout recruitment or via other contact methods.

What is CampusDirector?

CampusDirector is a website that all PNMs are required to register for, that allows all IFC chapters to have access to their contact information, for individual chapters to reach out to you, and for the VP of Recruitment to provide updates and information regarding recruitment. CampusDirector is also used to extend bids to all PNMs and where you would accept a bid to join an IFC chapter.

Will I have enough time to maintain my grades, hold down a job and be involved in other organizations, if I join a fraternity?

Being a member of a fraternity is a commitment, but it should not prevent you from having a job or being involved in other organizations. Fraternity men are some of the most involved and high-achieving individuals on campus, from service to professional development to academic organizations. Academic achievement is a major focus for all chapters on campus for both new members and active students. Every chapter has a scholarship chair, who assists in creating academic plans for new members.

Are there any scholarship opportunities for membership dues?

IFC awards 6 individual scholarship awards every semester. There are five, $1,000, distinguished brother scholarships available for each grade level and one $1,000 first generation college student scholarship. Many chapters and their national organizations also award yearly scholarships.

If I choose to resign my membership, can I join another IFC fraternity?

In most instances, you cannot resign your fraternity membership and join another one. Fraternities that belong to the National Interfraternity Conference (NIC) follow a policy that you cannot join another fraternity, if you have already been initiated into one. There are rare exceptions.

What is the Fraternity and Sorority Life Fee The FSL Community Contribution Fee or Greek Fee is a $30 fee that will be applied to undergraduates participating in Fraternity & Sorority Life each semester.

The FSL Fee was introduced at the beginning of Fall 2020. The fee is added to student accounts at the beginning of the semester and is looped into your overall student tuition and fees. A waiver process is in place to assist those students who may have financial insecurity or be on campus as part of certain scholarship programs.
