This is a housing project which is located in Mimar Kemalettin district in İzmir. The project is a product of series of redensification strategies. As a principle, it requires maximum invervention with minimum distortion in the area. With this understanding, while the total volume keep the same, the builging which has the biggest volume in the block is removed and the volume is distributed to building with the smallest volume, in order to have unearned income tax from the landlord to be used for public good. With this strategy, the project provides 356 m2 rent free spaces for non-profit organizations. In the bigger scale, as a response to create more balanced community, it was taken as a problem of the area not having an residential structures. It is known that land values are too high for residential project. Therefore, “creative indıustries” a target group of users. Idea is to create compact space with house and studio for the ones who are already pay for both. Naturally, this decision contributes affordability for an housing project. The project occupies, three parcel of same block. Three parcels gently placed on the site and work as one. First two floors provides residential areas for the existing needs. Again in the second floor, there is non- profit organizations. A %8 ramp connects all the parts of the building together -as a main circulation element. To response to natural locations of the blocks and form of the ramps, there is radial organization with the housing+studio part.

The project aims to unite more efficient production together with an eye-catching selling strategy. In that case, experiment based economy is applied on site by creating a new inner street visible from any sides. At the same time, manufacturing process is ordered visually with two separated forms in connection according to the internal logic of production. For example, delivery and the manufacturing are backstage progress in fashion sector but all these actions are going on in the main Mimar Kemalettin Street and generally available to see directly by the passersby. By recreating that two formed building in the area, this situation has changed and embark to play a big role to other tradesmen within the area. As a little detailed information, there are two existing buildings preserved for their architectural character in the redesigned site with their façade strategies and changed according to sunlight to work as sun breakers providing efficient daylight through the structure. Then, the form took shape with the other neighbor structures. Some cantilever provide more enclosure to istorefronts on the main elevation of the building and pathways around it. An urban aisle leads people to the entrance from the Mimar Kemalettin Street. Circulation bridges around the building also represent and support the idea of designer based “manufacturing” inside the building. They also provide shade to café terrace and Inner Street and generate courtyard type places.

LA arch 498

The goal of this textile art center is that the potantial of this area increase and the production is supported. Mimar Kemalettin is in between Konak and Alsancak so people use this area by passing. As a result of this, if there is a plaza, the people can be attracted to this area and the potantial of area and the potantial of the building increase. There is an entry sequence because people come from out to the plaza, then they go to the court and they go to the gallery and inside. When people come in inside, they meet the spacious lobby and they walk in exhibition area. In addition, if they want to see the more details for clothings, they can go to the exhibition area and they can watch the fashion show. Also people can see the stage of processing of the textile products in atelier. The materials come and they are processed and then, they are exhibited and are sold. There is an a accommodation possibility because some of workers come for several months or weeks and so they can stay in accomodation floor. The building facades are generally transparent because people can make an observation from the outside so there are sitting places around the building and the facade is brick covering due to the classic beauty, durable value, energy efficiency, low maintenance and natural material.

FABRIC.ATION

LA arch 498

This building complex is designed mainly as a big storage in garment district which is located in Mimar Kemalettin Street, İzmir. According to the existing system, fabrics come from Torbalı, İzmir. However, it causes traffic problem, and dependency to Torbalı companies as economically. For this reason, the main target of this building is being a storage for that district. Conceptual idea is that providing an opportunity to new commers (refugees) which is surviving in that district. Firstly, training them in ateliers, then employ them in that facility. Thus, creating a mutualistic relationship between employee and employer. This building complex consists of mainly 3 parts which are storage part, working part and exhibition part. In exhibition and storage buildings did not have much chances as formly, except reducing the floor numbers. In working part, in order to provide the comfortable zone for fabrics, microclimate idea is used. According to the microclimate idea, the courtyard idea is implemented by placing all facilities around that courtyard in the middle. Also, the other subsidiary elements are used to provide and support the microclimatic area, such as plants, pool, and clay. The spaces of working area is divided to two parts which are atelier and desinging areas. In desinging part, there are spaces like management area, gathering area, marketing area, researching the world cases areas, pin up areas and etc. In atelier part, there are areas like training part for new commers, sewing area, cutting area, packaging area and loading area. There is a continuous circulation system in all over the building. Also, 2 glazed corridoors are added to strenghten and ease the circulation.

In the area there is a lack of design. Many firms do not use any designers in production only they copy the products of big brands. That’s why the project aims to provide design issues for the community. It serve as designing, learning, producing and selling. For attracting people to inside of the building created an interior street inside of the building. Function of the street is cahanged in day time. It used as selling area, sitting area and exhibiting area. Also the form of the building become from straight walls to the more folded to provide tectonic relations and used as shading element in some where. These folded walls provide more light to the spaces and satisfy their needs. The spaces arranged in 3D according to the visual connection between them. The gaps between the buildings used as interior garden in building and it has a visual connection from the street. There is a connection from the upper floor of the building to the garden.

The main idea is that for increasing the women visibility with production. While doing this, the production areas can be combined with a bridge which comes fromthe main bridge and created a big open space like gathering point for consumer and producer. For plan layout, the points were placed according to selling and fitting activities. Using the voronoi system, small areas were placed and drawing the plan layout with surrounding the small areas. According to transient areas, inside circulation was decided and machines were placed around this path. For the materials selection, section and plan worked together. In facede, mostly used glass to provide and increase the visibilty. The building is located on the Mimar Kemalettin Street area in Çankaya in İzmir and the area is considered as a fashion center. While analysing the site, there have been faced with some problems like facades that are far away from the visitors and hard to perceive used for showcases. The aim of the design to increase the surface area and to provide easily perceptional facade to the building. While designing the building, the orientation of spaces was arranged according to relations to each other and needs of being closed or distant on plan. The location of spaces from ground level was arranged according to publicity degree and ease for service circulation. With the same aspect, the circulation is divided into two according the back of house and front of house phenomena to seperate customer and user circulation. Moreover, the ration between area of the spaces and surface area of the space was calculated for every space and the opennes of spaces on facade was designed according to that ratio.

This design is for “traditional shopping”. Comparing the Mimar Kemalettin and Kemeraltı by considering the closeness in distance and similarities in function and deciding that bringing some functions, economic potantial and history from Kemeraltı to Mimar Kemalettin could became a critical thinking base for this project. Location is chosen accordingly and wanted that building became a border between this two important shopping district with its form and function and give opportunity to pass through. A historic building which has beautiful courtyard and balcony protected and making a relationship with that building both structural and functional. Load bearing stone walls which constructed from historic building, have some angles and creates and axis along the new designed building and defines the spaces. This load bearing walls change in each time according to needs of space and turn out to be column, window, door, passage or shading element. Also it shaped according to traditional to modern idea and represents a transformation in architectural language from past to today. Conceptually inspired from caravansarais, passages and stoas and tried to make modern interpretations of these historic buildings both formal and spatial language. This building have main and support shops for special days such as wedding, engagement, prom or circumcision and give opportunity to accommodate for these people who are came this area for this purpose with their relatives and families. FASHION DESIGN&COMMUNITY

G

LA arch 498

The building serve for development of young fashion design community that interpretated in architectural way in terms of selling and shopping. It placed in Konak, Mimar Kemalettin Street and connected with a historic fabrics near it. Aim of the proposed site design; is enhancing density of the commercial street using with different types of functions and users, gained a new identity to attract attentions of more people and creating new squares and nodes to improve capacity of pedestrian street. After the site analysis, I focus on the comparing between shopping types of Kemeraltı and Mimar Kemalettin. Shopping is the main architectural capital in the areas. Distance of row materials makes a differences in terms of users density and retail selling is self-sufficient in Kemeraltı. Therefore, it is decided to construct a retail sale area based on design and production in the place. It is aimed to create a area that will revive of the street life more vividly and create a point of attraction. Project site which is in the political/economic development line of Mimar Kemalettin has a critical meeting point potential for the surrounding commercial areas. Promoting commercial activities in the district with the goal of revitalising physcial structures and regenerating economic/social activities. Operation consist of four main parts: learning, working, selling and living. Therefore, action time increasing with the architectural program. Determined strategies from site analysis will applied in form. Small streets are created to enhancing views and advantages of window shopping and shopping. Segregation of areas change according to workers/customers, public/ private and architectural purpose.

The project is located in Mimar Kemalettin area in Ä°zmir. In that area, there are mostly shops and production ateliers. People generally prefer coming in that area when they need to something about textile and also wholesaling. The aim of this project is to make production visible and in touch with the community. Hands-on building has small scale production, training and accommodation for learners. Everything starts with the low people density in the Mimar Kemalettin area. Reasons for this was thought to be visibility of more men population on that area. Based on this, thought as a critically say that have a policy that related to bringing more women in that area. From this point of view, designed a building that based on handiworks and including trainings related to this function like needlepoint or embroidery. By this way, mostly women would prefer this kind of practices. In addition, people can experience production, exhibition and selling processes in and from courtyard of building and they can get involved in production somehow. It is a kind of experiencing economy. In addition, handiworks that practice in this building are based on tactile kinesthetic learning type and in this learning type, flexibility, visuality, repeating and interaction are key actors. These reflect spatially in building like level differences, spreading areas of training in production areas and increasing transparency in between spaces.

ADAPTATION

LA Y arch 498

This building is a support center for immigrants and refugees. It is located in Basmane, Izmir where is used intensely by immigrants and refugees. The aim of this project is to adapt those people who are coming from another place to their new place. The most important thing in this project is while adapting the people to their new place, adapting also the building to its site. To achieve this some design ways are considered such as not to demolish anything with respect to the area and existing building. And also, reviving some existing unused places such as the shops. When the site is analyzed, these existing shops were discovered and considered to be renewed and used again. In this way, this part of the area will be more alive. When it comes to the inside of the building, it contains some language support places for those people to have the chance to learn our language and communicate with the local people. Also, to give them another chance to adapt to their new living places, some working areas are designed to work and sell their products and earn their own money.

This Project is designed for women and children. The Project site is located in Basmane. The theme of the project is living in transition and temporary accommodation. According to analysis, the most important issue is safety problems in Basmane district. To solve this problem, this project proposes cultural path between Agora, Hatuniye Square and project site, public spaces and socializing areas to revive the street. The program includes socializing, crafting and sleeping areas for women; there is a statement of United Nation Security Council: ‘Wherever there is conflict, women must be part of the solution.’ So this project proposes a place for women and children. The aim of this Project is to provide that women take more part in social and economic life. The keywords of this project are regeneration, flow, reusing and continuity, integration.

And in these conditions people can’t their meet basic needs. There is a steel structure car park on site which is very durable structure and can be easly convertable to an othe structure of different uses. This project offers a permanent public kitchen and a temporary field hospital. The exisisting car park will be converted into hospital in a disaster condition just by pulling down the shutters (all the walls can be constructed by using garrage shutter doors). All the medical equipments will be stored in medical storage which is next to public kitchen. For shipping all the equipments existing ramps of carpark will be used.

RELIANCE

G

LA Y arch 498

The aim of the Project is to design a place for temporary accomodation. A place for living in transition. The site is located in basmane and it has been an accomodaion place through the history. It is closer to Basmane train and metro station and the city centre. Accessibility to transportation network, accomodation in historical texture, commercial functions, affordable accomodation and central location can be the advantages of the site. But there are some disagvantages also. In basmane the hotels region the buildings are damaged and has very poor physical equipments and it is not prefered by citizens after the increase of immigrants there is a need for accomodation. From the inferences of the site, my approach will be increasing the quality of space by creating spaces for different user profiles and support with activities that can make atraction points into the site. I will consider the security problem in the site. Also, the site has security problem. From Jane Jacob’s observations the continious users on sidewalks and public&private space demarcation can help to make the streets safer. By putting multi-purpose social spaces on ground floor and private ones on the upper levels can be my approach to create more interactive relationship with the street on ground floor level by inspiring from the same logic in built environment of Basmane. My another approach is the term newly occured ‘solidarity tourism’. It is a volunteering program gathering volunteers and local people around a common purpose to boost the development of the local community and its economy. It can help to differentiate the user profile in the site.

SELF-SUFFICIENT LIFE CYCLE

G

LA Y arch 498

Izmir Basmane area has been challenging with the refugee crises during the time. Demographics of the refugees changed in each decates and nowadays Basmane is dealing with Syrians. In regards to that the function of the complex is directly related with those people especially concerning their needs and the quality of their lifes. So that the self sufficient life cycle is offering them to accomodate temporarly while working and producing and also supplying their economic cycles from the same place. Tourists are the other users and the proposal over them is that they will buy the handcrafts that are produced in the complex and stay in the same place to leave money to the refugees who are at the same time the temporal owners of the place. Anafartalar street, Basmane train station and the hotels street are the main stimulants for design development process. They offer easy transportation means a cluster of people can use the place, train station which is the first place for refugees in Izmir and hotels which the program had been feeded by. Rather than a concrete mass the open spaces, corridors, arcades and green integration in all of them are feeding the comfort of the architecture. The circular type of circulation paths are the elements of the concept.

Basmane is a very old and alive place which is throughtout history been first place for the new commers of İzmir because of Basmane station. Nowadays it is more alive and crowded with Sryian refugees. Most of the Sryians staying in İzmir for a couple days and then they are continue their road. But most of them couldn’t integrate with society or city because couple of problems. They are coming a place which they are totally strange. They cannot talk because of language issue. This project concept occurred between this issues. Sahaayak immigrant and refugee centre is a temporary accommodation and orientation place for every person around the world. Every person should have a right of temporary accommodation in any country in the situation of natural disaster or war. Between this information, we can say that the users of the buildings are not coming from a good environment and healthy mentality. Most of the buildings around the world made by concrete which is grey color.Grey is also color of war and disaster. made by concrete which is grey color. For not the remind them this feelings, the building is not grey color and concrete. It is also giving the feeling of the permanence effect of the most of the houses made by concrete. But the concept is not staying in a long term. Building should give the effect of temporality by itself. This building should be easy and fast to built and low cost. The material should be easy to find. Sahayaak aimed that being a model for all around the world.

The goal of the Project is designing a Cultural Hub into redesigning and applying pedestrianize site. A priority has been identified to design sustainable building. In the field there are two important elements which are; the sea and historical building. As conceptual approach ensure connection is most important thing. Cultural Hub has 2 entrances, one of them is from seaside and the other one is from Street. Entrance by sea provided by large courtyard which is minus level difference. And this courtyard also using for exhibition area. Library, workshops, community area and education rooms has connection with this courtyard. Entrance by Street has beautiful garden around it. Ä°t provides reach to courtyard, foyer and cafe. In this Project green roof of the auditorium using as viewing terrace. Other roofs designed sloppy according to analysis of sun. Using of moving shade block the much sunlight. Their angles changes according to sun lights angles. For natural circulation rotation of wind applied to building form. And designed as angular. Mostly green areas augmented, building can produce its own energy and aimed spend minimum energy. And thanks to those features of the building we can say it is Green Building.

GREEN INTEGRATION

LA arch 498

This project is located in Mithatpaşa/İzmir, next to sea. Aim of the project is to integrate the building with the urban park next to it. To reach this goal, most of the project area used as a garden and the building is designed and located smoothly to the site. Creating this smooth touch to the site has made a difference to the alignment of the buildings at the seaside. While most of the buildings are making a wall effect, this project gives a public green space with a cultural center to people. After designing the landscape and the building, a connection between them has created. This connection designed to stop the winter wind, while taking the fresh summer breeze to the building and the inner streets. Also, the sea view from the building has an effect on the design of this connection. Project has two different parts that are connected at the entrance. Library, temporary exhibition hall and silent workshop rooms are located in the one part. Speciality of this part of the building that it is mostly silent and restful. On the other hand, the other part of the building has the auditorium and a permanent exhibition hall. Auditorium is used for conferences, concerts and events such as them. Permanent exhibition hall has a permanent exhibition space and at the specified times, some workshops and events are arranged to keep that space more alive. Also, there is a restaurant in the building, which can be reach from the buildin or directly from the outside by using public stairs.

The general concept for the project is defined as a mixed cultural hub in the area of Karataş, Izmir where the new arrengement for the coast is applying by the local municipality. The new proposal for the site is analyzed in the beginnging of the project and landscape design is re arrengad in relation with the Inhabitable Campus. The main idea of the project that affects the landscape design is inner street. It serves for the public and shops along the street are rentable. For my own project, concept is integrating the building with public use in both sides and providing an international studying environment. To achieve these, I have proposed public platform for current activities that facing the sea. For the south facade which is facing the Mithatpaşa street, double skin facace for the ecologic support is designed with media wall. Mithatpaşa street is well functioning and with a simple facade design just helps eye catching, people can get an idea of what kind of activities there inside. Different from the public platform, this contributes the project for integration not physically, but visually. The activities campus have are auditorium, dancing and music studio, library, reading room. The building at the end of the street is functioning seperately in terms of program. It is more private area and named as a artist house for people who can live there and work for one or two weeks on an artwork like painting, ceramic works or etc. During the whole desing, environmental and ecologic factors well analyzed like they affected the design process. Ecological strategy is the one of the strong part of the project.

Site area has important location becouse of new developments in Mustafa Kemal seaway and adjacency to Konak, which is landmark for cultural activities in Izmir. This urban innovations will effect on majority of Izmir people becouse of connection between coastal districts and central districts.Site area has direct connectivity and attachment with new tram route and underpass, so this opportunity makes area recognizable and unique. Form of the cultural center shaped according to major pedestrian routes and main axes all along to coast line and taking care to the daily sun path and wind directions. Interior design generally planned as a open plan for undisturbed circulation. This approach combined with linear ramp in the center point of the building. Becouse of the Mediterranean climate,Izmir is generally hot and droughty, therefore curtain wall designed and outstreched for preventing sunshine and creating shading.Additionally its providing privacy for outdoor spaces and distribute sunshine as needed.

Linking architecture and landscape is central key of the project. The stair roof is create a large and sensitively shaped public area. Also the building have a monumental appearance. Also, stairs create terraces for inner spaces. So, the building is open access for all. The main idea is access to the public, and integration with the new public square. The windows are designed and situated to allow in as much sunlight as possible. Glass slits in between the treads allow sunlight to filter into the building. Also, the auditorium can work 2 way, according to the event and season, so there is sustainability in terms of space.

SUNKEN CONTEXT

LA

G arch 498

Site is located one of the Izmir’s coastal district called ‘Karatas’.The site is one of the fundamental key for this project. In the current situation there are too many residentials that blocks the sea site. There is no connection to inner parts. Just behind the site there are some historical buildings which are used as high school and military facilities. The specific feature of this project is bringing this historical fabric to front creating a building that doesn’t block this view and strengthen the connection between inner part and the outer part ‘Sunken Context’ is a cultural center includes: library, temporary exhibition areas, restaurant&cafe’s, Public amphi for free uses and a auditorium. Total built up area is 3.500 m2 and it has lots of outside areas part of the center. The urban aim of the project is the visibility of historical part. To make these historical buildings seenable some specific points has selected (bike road, ferry station etc.) After the selection of points view angles also has been set . Lastly collecting every interspaces gived a pattern in the site and that has determined to put the masses and also the sunken parts.

Mixed Use Cultural Hub | Boxie

N

LA

G arch 498

Mixed use Cultural Hub named “Boxie” for this occasion reflects contemporary tendencies for venue which, by it`s definition, may represent broader cultural and library center, a concert venue, workshop hub, theatre and community related social spot. Regarding given theme and its challenging context I dare to ask and redefine the purpose of “Mixed Use” facility by connecting the functions which regularly may not appear in specigic given contexts. Hence word “mixed” pushed me forward to think about ‘workshop’ spces as a set of design disciplines where design is taught and eventually produced. Merging such departments as industrial design, fashion design and sound design with digital design labs and painting atelier bring us into position to lay out a new form of local social venue for citizens of Karatas district. Additional functions combine library oriented platforms defined as “reading areas” with “conference hall” and “theatre\performance club” with restaurant caffe so that visitors adopt feeling of mutual affiliation attending events alternately and optionally. Important additive to such concept are educational rooms where variety of courses are delivered to low wage citizens by symbolical fee so that center attracts wide radius of citizen classes. Hub is devided into three main entities and within them to sub-entities in a circular form where outdoor gallery dominates in the focal, central point of library and `call` passers to explore more.
