Hello,

Enjoy a letter from the Publisher s Spring hedges its way around the corner, I find myself excited about the prospect of home projects, gardening, holiday celebrations, and the laug hter that comes with epic Pinterest fails. But with all the excitement comes a level of stress for the working parents from planning holiday festivities and looking ahead to Spring and Summer activities for the family.

This season, iE Parenting is over the moon about being a proud media sponsor of Make-A-Wish® Orange County and the Inland Empire. Over the next few weeks, you’ll notice if you follow us on social, that we will be raising awareness for all the fabulous wishes granted to kids in the Inland Empire by Make-a-Wish. Follow us to read our #WishesWednesday segment.

While the weather is great, we’ve tried to ease the seasonal stress by lining up local hot spots, camps, and family fun waiting to be checked off the list and posted to Instagram. Many of our suggestions don’t cost much, if anything at all, and we made sure to include events from all corners of the Riverside & San Bernardino Counties.

It is our sincere hope that you are inspired to take advantage of all the amazing things happening around our hometown.

PARENT TIPS

From Drudgery to Delight: 5 Tips to Transform Spring Cleaning into a Fun Family Activity

e

Now that spring has arrived, you want to get the house into shape and you know that you can accomplish this project quicker with the help of your kids. However, they aren’t excited to pitch in. But don’t give up on gaining their cooperation just yet. The following tips will help you rally your children to enthusiastically participate in spring cleaning. 1. Create a positive atmosphere. Your children will pick up on your attitude towards spring cleaning which will ultimately influence how they feel about it. If you give them the impression that spring cleaning is boring, they won’t be excited to help. Instead, set a positive tone. Talk to them about how nice it will feel to have a clean house and how everyone can have fun after their tasks have been completed. 2. Assign an appropriate chore to each person. You will gain your children’s cooperation and enthusiasm more readily if you give them tasks that suit their interests and capabilities. For example, enlist your outdoorsy child to sweep the porch or back patio, and ask your neat-freak kid to help you organize shelves and drawers. Let your introvert work alone, while children who enjoy socializing could be paired up to do tasks together. 3. Make it entertaining. Turn cleaning into a game. If you want to get all the windows in the house washed, give a small prize to whoever washes the most windows within a certain time period. Or, have a dance party while mopping and vacuuming the floor, putting on music and encouraging your kids to dance around while doing their tasks. Alternatively, find a podcast or an audiobook that your children will enjoy, and put it on the stereo for them to listen to as they complete their chores. 4. Take Breaks. While you might be motivated to work for the entire day, your children probably won’t be, so take

periodic breaks in order to maintain morale. For example, your kids could work for an hour then take a break for fifteen minutes. Let them do fun things during the breaks, such as eat a snack, play outside, or read a book. But, be sure to tell them how long the break will last, and make it clear that they’ll be expected to help clean again once the break is over. 5. Give Them a Reward. If your kids are particularly reluctant to help, or if your cleaning project will take a long time to complete, consider rewarding the entire family with a pizza dinner, movie, or a trip to the beach or amusement park after the project has been completed. You’ll also get to enjoy doing something fun to celebrate your hard work. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a dull chore for your family. By creating an upbeat atmosphere, assigning chores that fit your kids’ interests and capabilities, making it entertaining, taking breaks, and rewarding hard work, you can turn spring cleaning into a positive and productive experience.

Surviving Music Festivals: 8 Tips for Parents With over a decade of experience carrying out various roles in the music festival industry, insider Eleanor Blaine gives advice on how to keep your kids safe and comfortable at a music festival.

The idea of taking your teenagers to a major music festival may seem terrifying, but if you leave the house prepared you’ll have a much better time. Don’t forget that you’re both there to have fun; kids and parents alike can enjoy the excitement of a music festival. Follow these tips to make sure that your kids stay safe and that you get to enjoy yourself as well. 1. Water, water, water. Dehydration and heat stroke are very real issues at festivals. There are new laws that make most festivals responsible for providing water to concert-goers. Some offer free bottled or boxed water and some allow you to bring in your own sealed bottles, while others only provide drinking fountains. If drinking fountains are your only option, bring a few empty water bottles with you to fill up after you get in the gates. 2. Don’t let the kids dress up. Your kids may want to wear the latest trend that cost you half of your paycheck, but talk them out of it. They will get dirty. They will get muddy. They will get wet. The clothes worn to a music festival rarely make it home in salvageable condition. 3. Bring sweatshirts and use lockers. Have each child bring a sweatshirt. Every festival has lockers that you can rent instead of carrying them around. The price might be steep, but it’s better than having a wet, shivering child on your hands. Don’t trust the weather forecast! 4. Feed the kids before the festival. Festival food is expensive, and feeding your kids and their friends can really break the bank. It’s inevitable that you’ll have to purchase a few snacks for them and yourself, but if you make sure

6

everyone has a big meal before you go, you’ll save quite a bit of money. 5. Realize that your cell phones may not work. When you have 50,000 people trying to upload blurry photos of their favorite band to their social channels, cell towers can get clogged and service will get interrupted. Have alternate forms of communication at the ready. Set up designated meeting points if you and your kids get separated and encourage them to wear bright colors that are not common so they’ll be easier to spot amidst the crowd. 6. Don’t forget sunblock. Putting on sunblock before you leave the house is one thing, but you should also bring plenty with you. Buy some travel-sized tubes of sunblock and pass them out to the kids so that they can reapply whenever necessary -- and so that you have a backup if one tube gets lost. 7. Always buy passes that allow reentry. Tickets that allow reentry may cost a little more, but they’re worth it. Being able to go in and out of the festival as you please means you can leave to find an air conditioned restaurant or dry shelter if it starts to rain. 8. Have an escape plan. When music festivals come to a close there’s usually a human traffic jam at the gates because everyone tries to leave at the same time. If possible, try to leave before the headlining acts play so that you can beat the crowds. If you want to stay for the headliners, don’t rush the exit and be aware that you will probably be stuck on the festival grounds for up to two hours while trying to exit and secure transportation home.

KIDS

Photo by Tyler Nix on Unsplash

Which Summer Camp Is The Right Fit For My Kid? Choosing a summer camp for your child or children may prove to be a difficult task, but it is by no means an insurmountable one. The challenge of finding a summer camp for your child is rooted in the need to find one that will cater to the interests of your children, that will meet your approval, and that is friendly to your budget. Other considerations, such as distance from home, length of stay, and your child’s comfort and need for contact from home may come into play as well. The first step in finding a summer camp for your child is to adjust your frame of thinking. Searching for a summer camp is more than just trying to find somewhere to “put” your children while you are at work for a few weeks every summer. The search for a summer camp is incredibly similar to the search for a new pair of shoes for your growing child. You have to find the right size that will fit their lives and interests just like you would seek the correct shoes for their two precious feet. Summer camp for youngsters is a lesson in growing up. They’ll encounter a lot of new things whileattending summer camp that first year. Some of these valuable life lessons might include dealing with homesickness, learning to swim on their own, and sleeping in a tent or cabin. Here are a few questions to consider while searching for a summer camp for your child: - Is your child old enough or emotionally ready to go to a camp that offers overnight stays as part of its program? - If not, is there an interesting and affordable day camp alternative in your area? - Is there a time during longer stays when family will be allowed to visit? - Does this camp meet with your child’s specific interests or goals? - What type of camp do you think would be best for your child and is it something you can afford? - If your child has special needs, can this camp accommodate a differently-abled child? - Have you compared the specifics of several camps? - Have you asked your child which camp he or she would like to attend? - Does your child make new friends easily? - Will there be other children, who are already friends or neighbors with your family, that will also be attending? ieparenting.com | Spring 2019

Once you find a summer camp with the right “fit”, your children will be on a path to a higher degree of independence and an improved concept of their abilties to succeed at activities and relationships. Now it’s just a matter of finding that camp that fits like a glove. Or, as the case may be, a good pair of sneakers.

Local Hot Spots The Dirty Penguin Chino Hills , CA @dirtypenguincoffeeco Coffee and Kids Pair Well at this Chino Hills Cafe By: Megan Feighery

Coffee and kids aren’t usually a combination that go well together, but April Seals, the new owner of The Dirty Penguin, is looking to change that. “I was really inspired to create a space where parents could get a great cup of coffee and connect with others while their kids were entertained. You don’t usually associate a coffee shop with children but we have managed to seamlessly blend them together.” The cafe offers parents the chance to sip their beverages and catch up with friends, read a book, or get some work done while their kids play in The Little Penguin play area and even enjoy their very own “Babycinno.” The Dirty Penguin offers a special Kid’s Menu with tasty yet healthy options and they now hold a Storytime every Friday at 10:30am. The owners and staff pride themselves on being kids at heart and want to make everyone feel welcome when they enter. Inside, the shop is bright and oh so Instagram worthy with bright neon signs from a local artist and plants galore.

unique and delicious drinks and menu items. From strawberry cream pop tarts to bacon cheddar scones and spinach and cheese croissants there is something for everyone, including vegans and vegetarians, but Seals insists that the avocado toast is the highlight of the menu. The cafe also makes custom specialty lattes with the lavender and salted caramel being some of their most popular. So next time you’re in the neighborhood, swing by The Dirty Penguin and check it out for yourself- it may very well become your favorite new coffee shop. “We are so excited to meet you and your little ones!” Seals says, grinning from ear to ear.

“We wanted to create a very inviting and relaxing environment with a lush tropical feeling,” Seals says. Aesthetics aside, The Dirty Penguin has amassed a loyal following of customers who rave about their
