IOT with ESP32 One of the biggest trends presently, IoT i.e. the Internet of Things has a lot of potential. Due to IEEE’s Shodh we got a glimpse of this potential.
Our team was assigned to create an app to communicate with the popular Espressif MCU ESP32 over Bluetooth.ESP32 is a low-cost,

low-power S.O.C. MCU with integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules. Interaction over Bluetooth is more of a beginner's way to do it, which we were.
Now, there are two ways of using Bluetooth i.e., Bluetooth Classic and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). Communication over BLE is difficult to implement. Hence, we were told to communicate with Bluetooth Classic.

Arduino In Arduino IDE, we imported the required libraries including BluetoothSerial.h which provided us with the ability to create a Bluetooth object. It has the methods needed to both, initialize the Bluetooth interface and to receive the data. If there is a byte available, we will read it using the read method of the BluetoothSerial object. We are expecting to receive the commands as chars, we store the value returned in a variable of type char. Then, the remaining part is based on the usual template.

App We used Bluetooth sockets to establish a connection and on setting it up we securely read and write the bytes using InputStream and OutputStream. That's all. Our app becomes ready to communicate over Bluetooth.To establish this function, we used the protocol mentioned for Bluetooth permission on Android Studio developer webpage. All we need to do is pair the ESP32 with our phone and start the app, which features single-click buttons. Example - We click Power On to switch on the device connected to the ESP32.

The First Activity/Page of the application covered the authentication with the login and sign up features. The authentication used was Email/Password. It was also able to detect Username format to be in the Email Format and detect empty blanks. The Second Activity was used to turn the Bluetooth ON/OFF using the Bluetooth adaptor. The Third Activity took the user to the selection of a Paired Bluetooth Device using list-view. The Fourth Activity after successful connection brought the user to the main controls of the appliance, fan in this case. It included Buttons to turn the Power ON/OFF and Regulator Buttons to control its speed.

User Interface We, the UI team had the task of making the UI for the Shodh Remote App. It was a great experience working as a team. The UI was made with the help of Adobe-XD software and then imported in Android studio. The basic idea was to make an attractive and user-friendly UI for the app. We also had the
