About Idyllwild Arts Idyllwild Arts is located in the San Jacinto Mountains, high above Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. It was founded in 1946 by Max and Bee Krone as a retreat from the rigors of urban life to support the cultural development of Southern California, a place where people of different backgrounds and cultures could celebrate their arts together. Idyllwild Arts Foundation now operates two programs: the Summer Program, which is in its 62nd year of providing more than 100 different classes in the arts for students of all ages and abilities, and the Academy, founded in 1986, which is a fully accredited, independent, college preparatory high school for students with potential for a career in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, writing, moving pictures, or interdisciplinary arts. Idyllwild Arts Academy

Idyllwild Arts Summer Program

The Academy is a fully accredited college preparatory boarding high school, preparing talented arts students for the finest conservatories, professional companies, liberal arts colleges and universities. Students in grades 9 – 12 and post-graduate are admitted on the basis of audition or portfolio evaluation, academic record, and past record as good school citizens. The Academy offers majors in creative writing, dance, interdisciplinary arts, moving pictures, music, theatre, and visual art. Students study six mornings a week in academic classes and, in the afternoons and evenings, attend arts classes and rehearsals, work in studios, or practice.

The tradition that began in 1950 to bring the best artists in their field to teach under the pines continues today. Writer Norman Corwin, choreographers Merce Cunningham and Bella Lewitzky, folk singer Pete Seeger, painter Francoise Gilot, Native American artist Fritz Scholder, and photographer Ansel Adams are representative of the many gifted artists who taught at Idyllwild Arts and set the standard for arts education in the Summer Program. During a nine-week season, the Summer Program enrolls approximately 1600 students ages five to adult in more than 100 intensive, hands-on workshops (the majority twoweeks in length), taught by professional artist-teachers, in dance, music, theatre, visual art, creative writing, filmmaking, and Native American arts.

Enrollment has grown to approximately 276 students (38% from California, 29% from other states, 35% international). Over 65% of Academy students are awarded some amount of financial aid totaling over $5.5 million annually.

The program for young people includes the Children’s Center (ages 5 – 12), Junior Artist’s Center (ages (11 – 13), and Youth Arts Center (ages 13 – 18), offering courses designed to excite and engage young people, and to accommodate a broad range of skill levels and a wide variety of arts experiences.

Each year, graduating seniors are sought by colleges, conservatories, and universities, including American Academy of the Dramatic Arts, California Institute of the Arts, Carnegie Mellon University, Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, New York University – Tisch, Parson School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of Southern California.

Each year, Idyllwild Arts provides financial aid for economically and culturally disadvantaged young people allowing them the opportunity to engage in the making and performance of art – 50% of young people participating in an arts workshop are awarded financial aid totaling approximately $600,000. Programs for adults include special theme-related workshops, seminars and performances, such as Metals Week, Hot Clay, and Native American Arts, featuring renowned artists and musicians.

Board Chair Report What a remarkable year we have had at Idyllwild Arts, a year of celebration, re-engagement and transition. We said goodbye to our treasured president, Bill Lowman, after 25 rich and rewarding years. We said hello to Brian D. Cohen, Idyllwild Arts’ new president. When Bill arrived at Idyllwild Arts, it had a struggling summer program. Illustrious and well-meaning as it was, it faced financial difficulties, and it had just severed its ties with USC. Bill’s vision and strength of personality transformed IA to the wonderful place it is today, a year-round campus with a thriving summer program serving 1600 in 2011, and also one of the finest arts academy programs in the country. We celebrate Bill’s legacy, vision and perseverance. We’ll miss Bill and Carolyn on campus. They continue to live in Idyllwild and will not be strangers to the school. The search for a new president was a daunting task, but with expert consultation a process was constructed that was thorough and involved the entire IA community: board, faculty, staff, alums and students. This process engaged the entire community, reigniting our commitment to the institution and enthusiasm for the future. It also broke down barriers, established new and strong relationships, and created new, successful ways to communicate. As a result of this year-long process, Brian D. Cohen was recommended unanimously by the Search Committee, and elected unanimously by the Board of Governors and Trustees. The announcement was met with rousing cheers by the broader IA community. Brian’s commitment to arts education and his work as a fine artist made him an ideal candidate. His history and experience at The Putney School combined with his intellect, direct and open style, as well as good humor make him an ideal president.

“Bill’s vision and strength of personality transformed IA to the wonderful place it is today, a year-round campus with a thriving summer program serving 1600 in 2011, and also one of the finest arts academy programs in the country. We celebrate Bill’s legacy, vision and perseverance.”

I’d like to thank the Search Committee for the hours of thoughtful work: my Co-Chair, Jim Lovelace, board members Jan Goldberg, Betty Parks, Steve Lavine, Doug Frank and Pete Capparelli, plus faculty members Bonnie Carpenter, Gary Gray and Doug Ashcraft. I’d also like to thank and compliment the staff and faculty for their rigorous engagement, and the Board of Governors and Trustees for embracing change with constructive optimism for the future. Always, part of that future is the support of the Associates of Idyllwild Arts, our community-based support group. Their volunteerism is constant on so many levels. Jim Newcomb, as its President, serves on the Board of Governors, and we value this special link to the community. The Associates’ Jazz in the Pines Festival is now a much anticipated event every summer, and draws increasingly fine talent, as well as large audiences. We appreciate being the beneficiary of the Associates’ activities. Idyllwild Arts has a bright future, indeed. 3

President Reports 2011 I am still new to Idyllwild Arts, yet I quickly recognized how extraordinarily well the school fulfills its mission to educate young artists. It is because of your commitment to the school’s mission of providing an unequaled academic and artistic program to a diverse student body of gifted young artists from all over the world that the school has played such a singular and effective role in arts education. Idyllwild Arts does what the author Chinua Achebe suggests education should aim to do – “to draw out what is there so that it can interact with what’s outside” – to guide the dreams and passions of young students towards lives of distinctive creative accomplishment. Bill Lowman, with your loyal ongoing support, has brought what must have seemed an uncertain dream at the outset to its current high level of success. It is with gratitude to Bill and with great anticipation and belief in our mission that I have assumed the presidency of Idyllwild Arts.

What a wonderful and fulfilling year at Idyllwild Arts. We celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the founding of Idyllwild Arts Academy and offered the 62nd Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. As we read articles about cuts in funding for arts education and the financial struggles of arts organizations, Idyllwild Arts continues to be strong. We believe that our mission is critically important to the world and that it is our duty to serve as a beacon of excellence in arts education. Students continue to fill the Academy and Summer Program to capacity, and supporters provide financial support so that our work at the highest levels of quality remains true. However, we would not be able to offer the wonderful Summer Program to students or enroll the most promising young artists in the Arts Academy without your help. We are grateful that you recognize IA as so important when there are many deserving causes in the world.

I thank you for believing in the mission of Idyllwild Arts and for actively supporting so many deserving students in this extraordinary educational opportunity. Yours,

Brian D. Cohen, President, Idyllwild Arts

The very best thanks we can offer you is the assurance that your gifts are well and carefully spent so that they make an exponential improvement in the lives of our students. Summer Program alumni and Arts Academy alumni have made significant contributions to our society and will do so in even more effective and innovative ways in the future. Due to your support and the support of others like you, this remarkable institution will continue to serve the artistic spirit for generations to come. In my final year as President, I want to personally thank you for all you have done to provide support for IA. I have had the good fortune to be a summer choir student, a counselor, a choir faculty member, a dean, and Assistant Director of ISOMATA, 1965 – 1976, and then to return as Executive Director, Headmaster and President, 1985 – 2011! So when I say thank you, I mean THANK YOU from every possible area of the school. I look forward to the bright future of IA and to its continuing role in leading arts education. Warmest Regards,

William M. Lowman, Founding Head of School & Past President

2011 Academy Report The 25th anniversary year at Idyllwild Arts Academy was completed with the graduation of the Class of 2011 on June 4th. This talented group completed challenging course work in music, visual arts, dance, theatre, moving pictures, creative writing, and interdisciplinary arts. The Academy demands much of its graduates in each of three important elements of our mission: pre-professional training in the arts, college preparatory academics, and positive personal growth. The discipline and focused effort required to succeed at the Academy are essential elements in the lives of our young artists as they face the next step of education and careers in the arts. The Class of 2011 was an extraordinary group, earning excellent college and conservatory admission, and presenting remarkable performances, shows, films, readings, and other expressions of their artistic skills and sensibilities. As we honor their successes, we remember with deepest appreciation the assistance that you, as donors, have provided to enable us to educate this remarkable group. For the second year of this economic downturn, more than 65% of our student body required financial aid to complete their studies. We were able to meet their needs and provide them with a world-class education in large part because of the generosity of our donors. We cannot thank you enough. As we’ve expected from IAA alumni prominent in the creation of art all over the world for 25 years, we now await with confidence and excitement the mature contributions of the Class of 2011 to the world of art.

William M. Lowman, Founding Head of School & Past President

“...more than 65% of our student body required financial aid to complete their studies. We were able to meet their needs and provide them with a world-class education in large part because of the generosity of our donors. We cannot thank you enough.”

The Summer Program For 62 consecutive summers, the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program has worked to fulfill its mission to “ …provide arts instruction and experiences of the highest caliber to a diverse student population of all ages and abilities in a beautiful natural environment conducive to positive personal growth.” Over the past three summers of 2009 – 2011, we have continued to flourish in spite of unstable economic conditions around the world. I would like to extend my most enthusiastic and heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of donors and friends who have continued to support Idyllwild Arts in both good and tough times. In addition, we are supremely grateful for the continuing attendance and support from the approximately 1700 students who participate in the program each summer. Although the financial stability of the past three summers is essential to our continuing success, the most significant work of the Summer Program takes place in more than 115 intensive programs and workshops for students of all ages and abilities in the fields of dance, film, music, theatre, visual arts, writing, and Native American arts. For eight weeks, the campus buzzes with the intensive activity generated by hundreds of students energetically pursuing their passion in the arts. From Metals Week to Mahler and Still Life to Shakespeare, adults, teenagers and children happily and productively immerse themselves in the rewards and struggles of artistic exploration and discovery. Over the past three summers, we have been able to assist more than 1200 young people participate in life-changing experiences in the arts by means of financial aid and scholarships. Deserving students from families with limited financial resources have been supported by the generosity of charitable foundations and individuals who underwrite nearly one-half million dollars each year for summer financial aid. To those who offer such vital help, let me say that we absolutely, positively could not do it without you! Thank you. Finally, any school is only as good as its faculty and staff. We are fortunate to have the most wonderful faculty of artist-teachers imaginable, and a support staff, both full-time and seasonal, of hard-working, dedicated idealists who provide untold hours of creativity, energy, and love for our students. Ultimately, the success of the Summer Program is created by the important work of all these people – thank goodness for the depth and richness of our most valuable resource!

“I would like to extend my most enthusiastic and heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of donors and friends who have continued to support Idyllwild Arts in both good and tough times. In addition, we are supremely grateful for the continuing attendance and support from the approximately 1700 students who participate in the program each summer.”

Steven Fraider, Vice President, Idyllwild Arts & Director of the Summer Program

Jon Lovelace Tribute By William M. Lowman, Founding Head of School & Past President We received word that Jon Lovelace passed away on November 16, 2011. Jon, his wife Lillian, and their four children started attending summer courses at ISOMATA in the 1950s. They supported the original Idyllwild Arts Foundation. They continued their participation in the Summer Program during the USC ownership of the campus from 1964 – 83 and became deeply involved in extraordinary philanthropy in support of Idyllwild Arts in the 1990s. Jon’s image can be found in various historical pictures of the school. He particularly enjoyed the Pete Seeger folk music course called, “Pear Shaped Notes.” He also found inspiration in the photography course taught by Ansel Adams. Jon and Lillian attended many summer courses in Idyllwild over five decades. Their children and grandchildren attended many summer programs and two of his grand nephews graduated from the Arts Academy. Jon Lovelace’s business and investment acumen was legendary as a leader of the Capital Group Companies in Los Angeles. No less important was his philanthropic prowess; however, it was always behind the scenes. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation for more than twenty years. Lillian has been on the Board of Governors for the same amount of time. They provided resources to support Idyllwild Arts in its most important developmental periods, when major investments were needed. He provided support for long-term strategic planning and critically needed expert consultants so that the school could develop in the best possible manner. Jon and Lillian hosted many events over the years at their home in support of IA and introduced the school to many influential donors in the Los Angeles philanthropic community. Their deep and abiding love for the summer program led to remarkable support for some of its most innovative and artistically excellent courses. It is not an exaggeration to note that without the support of the Lovelace family, Idyllwild Arts would not be what it is today. I will never forget the pleasure of serving as President when Jon and Lillian were on the board. Jon always asked perceptive questions and offered insightful suggestions. Jon’s discreet sense of humor and pleasure in the successes of others were a joy to behold. He enjoyed attending the summer musical theatre program as song lyrics were a love of his from his days at college. We sat side by side at the Children’s Center when his granddaughters were performing. I often visited Jon and Lillian “off the hill,” and their support was an inspiration to me in my efforts to continually improve the Arts Academy and Summer Program.

“It is not an exaggeration to note that without the support of the Lovelace family, Idyllwild Arts would not be what it is today.”

All of us at Idyllwild Arts send our condolences to Lillian and all the Lovelace family and are thankful that Jon was a part of the life of Idyllwild Arts. 35
