Students introduce themselves to each other during the first meeting for those interested in the La Casa Latino Cultural Center in 2010 at the center’s location on Seventh Street. About 30 people attended the orientation event.

Meet the IU culture centers

From IDS reports

At IU, the Office of International Services, along with various culture centers, work to try and make the transition to the United States and to the University as easy as possible for international students who are arriving at IU for their education. Here’s what you need to know about each center. The Office of International Services makes the transition to American culture easier for international students at IU. The office provides resources on everything from help with communication for international students to helping international students obtain visas to be able to travel. HELENE G. SIMON HILLEL CENTER The Helene G. Simon Hillel Center is, as its website describes, a “home away from home on campus” for a diverse Jewish student population. The IU Hillel Foundation was founded on the campus of the University in 1938. Hillel provides religious, cultural and social programming opportunities to as-

sist in the creation of a Jewish community on the IU campus.

ASIAN CULTURE CENTER The Asian Culture Center was established in 1988 and is the oldest Asian culture center of its kind in the Midwest. The center provides language sessions on Hindi, Korean and Mandarin for those interested in learning more about the languages. NEAL-MARSHALL BLACK CULTURE CENTER The Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center home to the African American Arts Institute, which has several events and performances throughout the year by groups like the IU Soul Revue, the African American Dance Company and the African American Choral Ensemble. The center’s resources, programs and organizations help to promote an awareness and understanding the experience for black students at IU. LA CASA, LATINO CULTURAL CENTER The La Casa, Cultural Center

Latino was

established in 1973 with the idea and purpose of creating better cultural awareness about Latino culture and history. The center presents arts performances and cultural events and is a link between the University, the city and the Latino community. FIRST NATIONS EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL CENTER The First Nations Educational and Cultural Center was opened in 2007 as a way to create a welcoming environment for indigenous and native students. The center also has an annual IU Traditional Powwow, which is popular among students. LGBTQ+ CULTURE CENTER The LGBTQ+ Culture Center is open to everyone and serves as a gathering space for LGBTQ+ students who might need encouragement and resources to help build meaningful relationships and friendships upon arriving on campus in Bloomington. The Center also recently started a peer mentor program. Dominick Jean

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2018

IU Office of International Services offers guidance By Dominick Jean drjean@iu.edu | @Domino_Jean

With each new school year comes hundreds of international students with questions and concerns about their new home. The IU Office of International Services helps students with academics, postgrad career and with simply adapting to their new environment. The Indiana Daily Student sat down with Rendy Schrader, IU's director of student and scholar advising, to talk about the upcoming year and the services and programs available for students. Schrader graduated from IU with degrees in political science and French and has been working at IU for 16 years now.

What kind of help and services can the Office of International Services provide to international students? We like to think of us as their first stop, especially when they're new, and they don't know where to go to in a university of this size. They'll learn eventually but we serve as a good interface. Our primary mission is advising on immigration regulations, but we get students who may be having academic struggles and don't know what the resources are so we can help point them in the right direction. Or they may be having health issues and they don't know how to navigate the U.S. health system. I've counseled on anything from relationships to health, to academic mat-

ters to career advice. But we know where the line is. Our role is to get them pointed in the right direction and with the right resource. We also do a lot of programming for them in terms of not only helping with cross-cultural adjustment but celebrating their culture and trying to do some programming that helps introduce them to life in the U.S. What is one of the biggest challenges for people coming to the United States for the first time? I think the toughest thing is just being away from home for the first time. Some of them have never been outside their own country or never been out on their own. I think a close second is really the different approach in the classroom.

They're coming from many different systems and very few of them allow the level of independence and participation that we expect here. What is one of the hardest parts about your job at OIS? Our job is keeping them legal, and the government is making it harder and harder for us to provide remedies. In the past, if a student dropped out of status, let’s say they went under the required credit hours and for undergrads that would be 12 hours. And maybe they're dropping a course, and they intend to pick another one up, but their record shows they were below 12 credit hours. That leads to a termination of their record.

ERIC RUDD | IDS

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2018 In the past, we had a remedy where we could help them file for reinstatement and a couple different paths they can follow. And the government has just put out a memorandum that basically says, “no, you could be what we call accruing unlawful presence,” which means you have to leave the country, and you may be subject to a bar for a number of years in terms of returning to the United States. So the government has become much less forgiving and it has diminished the number of resources we have available to us, so we are in a panic right now in terms of how do we communicate that to an 18 year old who's trying their best to navigate hundreds of different things and new environments. Please, please please don't take any action that could impact your immigration status without checking

with us first. Has the government making it harder for you impacted people wanting to come study here? I think its got to have an impact. We're seeing a decrease. Through the efforts of our recruiters, I think we are not experiencing as significant a decrease as some other institutions, but we just feel like the environment is less welcoming in the U.S. in general. So we are working extra hard to make sure that students who come here feel really welcome and really well adjusted and very supported. In your time here at IU, what are some of your favorite memories? I really love it when the students fill out their exit form, and they say nice things about us. They may not take the time during

7 the course of their studies, but when they look back on it they're like 'wow, it was great here.' We had a scholar write us recently and said “I was Fulbright student, a scholar at an ivy-league institution, and I have never felt more cared for than here.” And I was like 'yes!' What advice would you give to someone who just arrived here at IU? I think they need to be open for all opportunities. They need to do the academic work but perhaps not be as hard on themselves. I think they need to know there is so much help available on this campus that we may not notice they're struggling, but if they come and tell us they're struggling, there are so many ways to fix it. They cannot be shy about asking for help. Editor's Note: This interview has been edited for conciseness.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2018

Why collegiate sports are so popular in the United States By Murphy Wheeler jonmwhee@iu.edu | @murph_wheelerIU

To many outsiders, it may seem like a cult. On game days, fans dressed head-to-toe in cream and crimson attire go to whatever stadium around campus is having a game that night, sometimes lining up outside for hours before game time. They pack in to the stands, scream at referees, chant along with cheerleaders and sing along to the IU fight song with thousands of other people. They’re surrounded by strangers with one common interest — they’re all fans of the same team. This is a common scene on college campuses all over the United States, and IU is no different. Collegiate sports have

been a big deal in Bloomington for decades, especially major sports such as basketball and football. Even though the state of Indiana is widely known for its love of the game of basketball, that’s not the only reason thousands of people come out in droves to cheer on the Hoosiers. Plenty of fans attend athletic events simply for their love of the respective sports, but just as many people in attendance aren’t fans at all and only go to the games when they’re with friends at school. Going to games gives students an opportunity to not only spend time with friends on the weekend or a free night during the week, but it also gives people from all backgrounds and walks of life a reason to come together and cheer on their

school as one collective group. Camaraderie is key when singing the IU fight song or clapping along to the men’s basketball team’s tradition of playing the “Martha the Mop Lady” video on the big screen before home games at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The festivities of game days can also give students a chance to simply unwind and take time away from school for at least a few hours. Many people see it as a chance to de-stress by socializing during a night out at Assembly Hall, Memorial Stadium or any of the other sports facilities on IU’s campus. All sporting events at IU, other than football and men’s basketball, are free to any student with a valid

student ID, so there are plenty of opportunities to learn more about sports, such as volleyball, baseball

and more. No matter how big of a sports fan you are, games at IU give new students a

chance to learn some traditions of their school, have some fun and maybe even make a few new friends.

IU is home Juno Huang When Juno Huang, a senior from Taipei, Taiwan, studying marketing with a co-major in international business and business analytics, felt lost her first day on the University’s campus, a squirrel and a new friend came to help her out. After spending time at IU,

Huang said she really liked being able to help people. Although winters were harder than ones she’s used to back home, IU is home for her. “Every time I get off the airplane and on the bus back to campus, I feel like I’m going back home,” Huang said.

Colin Ooi Colin Ooi, a junior from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, studying information systems and operations, felt at home in Bloomington when he was on the bus to campus. He said because of the constant change on the University’s campus, he felt the most stable when on

the bus. Ooi decided to come to IU because he was drawn to the flexibility of the U.S. education system. “You don’t just take classes relevant to your major, but also a wide array of gen-ed classes that make you a more holistic person,” Ooi said.

Philip Jiao Philip Jiao, a senior from Qingdao, China, at the University studying history, said he came to Bloomington after falling in love with the campus after a high school science olympiad trip to the IU campus. “I came to the U.S. because my family wanted

me to receive a better, different education from the Chinese system,” Jiao said. Since being at IU for the past four years, Jiao said he made a lot of friends, who have impacted his time here and have made IU feel like home for him, despite being from China originally.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2018

IU campus leaders give advice to international students Ceci Jerry, President, Indiana Memorial Union Board of Directors Learn as much as possible about Indiana University, its resources, the people you live with in your residence halls and even finding your niche on campus. Our University has so much to offer.

Lillian Casillas-Origel, Director, La Casa/Latino Cultural Center Remember you do not have to do it alone. There are a lot of great people and services in place to lend support as you move forward through IU.

Denise Hayes, Ph.D., Director, Counseling and Psychological Services You might feel alone, but there is a community of people at IU who are going through the same experience, don’t be afraid to reach out.

Doug Bauder, Director, LGBTQ+ Culture Center Because of the world-renowned Kinsey Institute on the IU campus, diversity related to sexual orientation and gender identity has been valued on this campus and in Bloomington for decades.
