A Note from Wendy Grojean, IDEAS Room Coordinator Taking Ownership of Professional Development Through Professional Learning Networks Oftentimes I am asked, “How do you keep up with the technology that is out there?” My response is always, “I am on Twitter.” Twitter is my professional learning network (PLN). I follow educational technology experts such as Adam Bellow (@adambellow) and Richard Byrne (@rmbyrne). Through the use of Twitter, I find articles on technology, learn what educators are using in the classroom, and then join conversations on educational technology. My PLN on Twitter provides me with professional development on the topic of my choice, educational technology, because I follow people with similar interests. You can learn about a variety of topics based on whom you choose to follow on Twitter. If you are not a fan of Twitter, there are other sites for you to consider, i.e. plurk.com, ning.com, thinkfinity.com, even Google+. Regardless of which site you use, I challenge you to create a PLN of your own. Keep in mind, we are not just teachers in the 21st Century; we are 21st Century learners, as well. 1
