Key Policy Issues T
he nation’s home builders and remodelers work hard, take risks and get the job done. They are engaged in their communities, giving back day after day, year after year. Most important, the nation’s home builders create jobs and construct the homes that are the foundation of American family life.
The Key to a Vibrant Economy
Not only is the work of America’s home builders the foundation of family life, housing also helps drive the nation’s economy. Even though most of the nation’s home builders are small businesses with less than 10 employees, collectively the home building industry is a major employer and job creator. On average, 22 building trades are engaged in building a typical new home. According to NAHB analysis, construction of 1,000 single family homes creates 2,970 fulltime jobs. Similarly, construction of 1,000 new multifamily units creates 1,130 jobs, and $100 million in remodeling expenditures creates 890 jobs. The employment effects of new home construction and remodeling extend far beyond the physical structure. About half the jobs created by building new homes are in construction. These include framers, plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. The rest of the jobs are in other industries such as finance, architecture, engineering and transportation, as well as work related to manufacturing products such as furniture, appliances and building materials. Without a healthy housing market, the economy can’t flourish. That means the issues that are important to home builders, remodelers and others in the housing industry are the same issues that are key to a thriving economy.
Home Building Industry Priorities
As policymakers tackle a broad range of issues that affect housing, NAHB is leading the charge to protect its members' interests. To ensure that they can continue to build the American Dream, the nation’s home builders urge lawmakers to: Enable a supply of softwood lumber sufficient to meet demand. Reduce regulations that harm small businesses. Promote policies and job training programs that will help ensure an ample supply of welltrained workers to build the nation’s homes. Reform the nation’s housing finance system to ensure that single-family and multifamily housing credit remains readily available and affordable. Improve and streamline the federal permitting process. Create a national flood insurance program that is predictable and affordable. Pursue immigration policies that complement ongoing vocational training efforts and help fill labor gaps while protecting the nation’s borders.
