For the past several decades we’ve been working closely with the professionals who rely on our products for their lives and livelihoods, day in and day out. Developing highly functional and reliable tools requires understanding the real-world conditions arborists encounter on the work site. Numbers on a spec chart are only part of the equation. How a rope feels, reacts and lasts through many rough jobs is the real measure of our products’ quality and longevity.

NATS is a new and critical part of Sterling’s product development team. To help answer these questions, we turn to the experts; we turn to the instructors at North American Training Solutions. Composed of the most knowledgeable and experienced individuals in the tree care industry, with more than 200 years of combined work experience between them, NATS is a new and critical part of Sterling’s product development team. NATS instructors train arborists on all elements of proper tree work, equipment usage, safety and best practices when working on diverse and challenging job sites. The vast experience and wide range of conditions NATS instructors face make them the ideal partners to help Sterling develop new and better products, to test solutions on the job and to give us their unvarnished feedback. Our climbing lines are designed from the ground up to meet the specific needs of arborists. Extremely durable and offered in ideal diameters for a wide range of applications, the family of climbing lines work in most climbing/access systems, such as Stationary Rope Technique (SRT) and Moving Rope Technique (DdRT). Sterling’s climbing lines are available with sewn terminations.

Scion™

11.5 mm

Our newest, fully certified addition to the climbing line roster, the Scion Climbing Line’s burly construction and ability to absorb dynamic forces makes this rope ideal for Doubled Rope Technique (DdRT) and Single Rope Technique (SRT). Based off the construction of the popular Tendril, the 11.5 mm Scion has a polyester 24-strand cover and double-braided construction, engineered to have decreased elongation, soft handling and easy knotability. This rope has a tight, durable sheath that can handle mechanical devices and hardware. The Scion is hand spliceable and available with sewn terminations. Meets EN 1891 type A and ANSI Z133 requirements. Colors

Tendril™

11.1 mm

This is our soup to nuts, low stretch arborist rope that excels as a positioning or access line. The Tendril’s polyester sheath and double-braided construction delivers uncompromising strength to this 11.1 mm line, no matter if the conditions are wet or dry. This lightweight, abrasion-resistant line has low elongation and a soft, balanced handling giving it a less stiff feel. Easy to grip with bare or gloved hands, the Tendril runs smoothly with friction hitches or mechanical devices, and resists flattening or glazing throughout heavy use. Tech11™

Designed with the rigors of tree work in mind, the Tech11 is constructed with a Technora® sheath and nylon core. In extensive field testing, Tech11 has been exposed to some of the roughest, most extreme conditions, yet has been consistently rated as the most durable rope available for DdRT and SRT systems, which means it can keep working long after other ropes would be retired.

Tech11 :: A Category of Its Own The Sterling Tech11 has quickly become the gold standard for multipurpose climbing lines for use in the toughest conditions. With extensive use of aramid fibers in the sheath and its kernmantle construction, the Tech11 has been designed to be the only arbor rope that is both high heat and abrasion resistant and won’t glaze.

Occupying the 3/8" (10 mm) sweet spot, this 100% polyester rope has a kernmantle construction and is substantial enough to handle a variety of tasks, including ascension and rappelling due to its durable tight sheath and firm hand. We engineered our 7/16" HTP static rope to include just the right amount of stiffness for improved SRT work and access. Low stretch properties and high moisture resistance allow the 7/16" to operate consistently in wet and dry conditions. Sewn Terminations Sterling was the first company to offer sewn terminations in the US rope market as an alternative to hand splices. Through extensive testing on stitching characteristics and tack patterns, Sterling has an ISO-9001 certified computerized sewing program that

makes sewn terminations stronger than knots and eliminates the need for tying them. We offer optional end terminations on all arbor climbing and rigging lines in both tight eyes as well as large sewn eyes for all climbing and rigging applications.

Atlas™

13.5 mm

Strength and durability are paramount in this beefy rope. At 9/16," constructed with a polyester cover and nylon core, the Atlas is able to absorb large dynamic forces. The Atlas is different than other double braid rigging lines: it has a 32-strand cover, which helps create a highly durable rope that is less susceptible to picking. Because of the combo of its material, construction, soft handling and easy knotability, this line might be the most practical addition to your kit for rigging application. Works with a Port-a-wrap, capstan winch or rigging blocks. The Atlas can be ordered with a sewn eye termination for knotless rigging. Certified to ANSI Z133.1 Colors

Versatile innovation: the UP Lanyard is a true work positioning system for today’s arborist. This 11 mm rope features our unique Technora® sheath, Dyneema® inner jacket and nylon cores. The RIT 8 mm Eye and Eye is made from the high performing, heat resistant RIT 500 cord. It has a firmer, tight Aramid sheath for superior durability and is non-glazing. Extensively field tested by professional arborists, the RIT 8 mm Eye and Eye provides even and consistent friction in a wide variety of hitches. Meets ANSI Z133.

The 9 mm has a softer feel than the 8 mm Eye and Eye but offers the same durablility and consistent performance. The 9 mm is a 24-strand polycore construction made with high performing, heat resistant Aramid. These cords provide even and consistent performance for a wide variety of hitches. Meets ANSI Z133.

The RIT Footlock Prusik makes use of our RIT 8 mm construction to create a prusik soft enough to bite down when hitched, but firm enough to advance easily while ascending during secure footlocking. Twaron® fibers offer abrasion resistance and durability while minimizing glazing. Available in 54" or 58" lengths.

Sterling’s RIT MultiSling Prusik combines our 10 mm SafetyPro lanyard and our RIT 500 bound loop Prusik with an aluminum ring. An optimal blend of heat resistant and high energy absorption, our Multisling can be used as a footloop in an SRT Access system, as a redirect, or even as an ANSI-rated anchor point.

A powerful combination of our HTP Ring Sling and our RIT Ring Bound Loop Prusik, the AR Anchor allows quick adjustments when used as a primary anchor point by moving the RIT Ring Bound Loop Prusik along the Ring Sling. Because of the different sized rings, you can retrieve the entire system once back on the ground.

The Rope Rod is designed to be used as a tether with a Rope Wrench. Triple layer Technora® and computerized stitching make it stiff for advancing the wrench up the rope in single line arbor work.

This unique prusik uses RIT 500 construction with a Twaron速 sheath and nylon core for excellent heat resistance. The steel thimble offers a clean connection point and provides numerous options for adjustable anchors or connections.

Sterling created the bound loop prusik over 14 years ago as an innovative answer to bulky knots. Our RIT 8 mm and 9 mm Bound Loop Prusiks are the latest extension of that product and offer arborists durable, versatile tools for rigging, climbing and lanyard adjustment.

The Bound Loop Prusik does away with bulky, time-consuming knots with its pre-sewn loop construction. Made from 8 mm sewn cord, the Bound Loop Prusik comes in various lengths to meet your specific needs.

The basal anchor rigging chain has an alter ego: the big ass rigging chain. However you refer to it, the BARC still encompasses uncompromised strength and durability. Based on the design of the Chain Reactor, we designed the BARC with full-strength individual loops, which allows you an adjustable chain that’s strong at any length. Ideally used as a basal anchor or canopy anchor, or for lowering or knotless rigging, the BARC is made with 1" T9800 nylon webbing, has an MBS of 6,182 lbs, while each individual loop has a strength of 10,000 lbs and is available in 5' and 8.5' lengths. Depending on the length of chain, they can accommodate trees anywhere from 19" to 32," respectively. Works well with a Port-a-wrap or other friction brake lowering devices. Chain Reactor™ Not your traditional sewn daisy chain, the Chain Reactor is a multi-functional daisy chain designed with full-strength loops. These heavy duty loop slings are great when you need a high strength and super durable anchor. The 1" flat industrial strength webbing is sewn into a 10,000 lb+ sling to give a 1000 lb SWL. Great for knotless rigging, basal anchor setups, and any hauling application that requires a heavy duty anchor strap. Rated for life-safety applications.

Dyneema slings offer significant performance advantages over traditional runners. They are lightweight, have high abrasion resistance, are extremely strong, and resist moisture. These slings have an MBS of over 5,000 lbs and are CE certified to EN 566. Available in 10 mm and 12 mm versions.

The SR Rescue Pulley is compatible with ropes up to 13 mm and works great where a simple redirect is needed.

Prusik-minding pulleys are extremely high-strength and ideal for use in haul systems. They are efficient for progress capture and compatible with ropes up to 13 mm in diameter.

New Pico™ Double Pulley AZTEK™ Omni Blocks Built for our AZTEK System and each machined from a solid block of high strength aluminum, Omni Blocks are engineered to handle high loads. The swivel eye connection eliminates twisting of the rope and can accommodate up to three carabiners. Each block is a different color to ensure differentiation during operation.

Falcon™/Falcon Talon™ The Falcon comes in a compact pear shape, smaller than the Eagle. The Falcon with Talon’s wire gate captive-eye feature clutches the belay loop to reduce the risk of cross loading. Available in Screwlock or Autolock.

SafeD™ The SafeD carabiner is made from lightweight aluminum and features a removable captive eye pin allowing a rope with a sewn eye to be attached to it at any time. Available in Twistlock or Autolock. Safe-D is certified to NFPA 1983; 2012.

Rigging ATS™ Device A versatile, light and strong rigging and descent control device. The curved frame allows the ATS to be positioned so that the top wear bar can alternately increase or decrease friction, accommodating a wider range of ropes for single or double rope rappelling techniques. A heat-rated grommet insert keeps the device oriented correctly and helps prevent cross-loading of your carabiner. Available in anodized green finish and compatible with ropes ranging from 7.5 mm–11.2 mm.

Designed to easily organize your work area and provide multiple anchor points. Made from 6061-T6 aluminum with 5 teardropshaped connection holes that help center carabiners within each hole and keep multiple carabiners from overcrowding a central spot.

A perfect tool for aerial rigging, our R8 is larger than a standard figure 8, which helps the device dissipate heat and work more effectively with larger diameter ropes.

The Sterling rope bag is designed to hold a 60 M of 11.5 mm diameter rope and features a padded shoulder strap, pull tabs on each end for when you stuff it into a pack, and releasable buckles with adjustable tightening straps to keep your rope tight. Arbor Hitch Testing Summary

Sterling conducted a series of static and dynamic tests of popular hitches commonly used in the arbor industry. The purpose of the testing was to provide comparative data for the arbor community on hitch performance. The data presented is for educational purposes only and is not a guarantee of performance. All tests were conducted with new products. The data concludes that different hitches on different ropes provide different results so it is important to ensure components in a climbing system are compatible. Note: 1 kN is equal to 224.8 lbs.

Static Pull Tests This test procedure is a modified version of ANSI Z359.3 Slow Pull Test for Rope Adjusters. We created a test program that will set the hitch at 0.98 kN (approximate load for body weight), reduce the load to approximately 0.0 kN and then ramp to 4.45 kN. We then measured the slippage. Dynamic Drop Test These tests were conducted using a test mass of 100 kg. A fall factor 0.3 was used, which is the free fall distance divided by the length of the rope in the system. The hitch is tied to the host rope and then anchored to the test mass. The hitch is set prior to drop test. The mass is then raised to the prescribed drop height and released.
