The Philippine government, through the Board of Investments (BOI) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), recently presented to International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) the 2017 Guinogulan Award for Large Enterprises for the latter’s significant contribution to the country’s economic growth. The Guinogulan, which means “Lord of Gold” in Filipino, recognizes BOI-registered companies that contribute to the country’s economic growth through capital infusion, employment generation, introduction of new technologies and innovation, implementation of community relations, economic linkages, and adoption of inclusive business models in their operations. Gonzalez highlights inclusive business strategies, sustainability In a BOI interview, Christian R. Gonzalez, Senior Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific Region and the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), highlighted ICTSI’s inclusive business strategies in people management, stakeholder relations, environment and sustainability, and corporate social responsibility (CSR): “We have long term concessions. The very nature of our contracts would allow us to think and plan long term for our employees, the communities we are in, the governments we work with, the businesses and stakeholders in the supply chain, and the environment. We have to think sustainably from the very start to survive as a business.” ICTSI Philippine employees are given the opportunity to work abroad in the Group’s global operations with the assurance that their jobs are secure when they return

home. “Employees on overseas assignment are given expatriate remuneration. They are expected to rollout ICTSI’s brand of terminal operations in a foreign port, but when they go back home, they have to share the knowledge they acquired overseas,” says Mr. Gonzalez. In providing value and in ensuring businesses and stakeholders in the supply chain remain profitable, ICTSI implements leading edge port technology and innovation to allow seamless systems and processes, and transparency, and a more empowered client base that could easily make decisions with the real-time information that ICTSI provides. “The technologies we employ, aside from providing value to all stakeholders in the supply chain, guarantee that all aspects of ICTSI’s port operations are environment-friendly. Key considerations to our recent equipment acquisitions are carbon emission and noise pollution levels, and fuel efficiency, among others,” he adds. On CSR, Mr. Gonzalez says: “The best CSR programs are the ones often unheard of. Through our ICTSI Foundation, we have implemented programs that provide support mechanisms to the youth in the areas of education, health and community welfare, and sports. We’ve closely coordinated with public schools and hospitals in our immediate communities. We’re not only doing this locally, but globally.”

MICT success story, BOI support DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez presented to Mr. Gonzalez a commissioned trophy sculptured by Filipino artist Ramon Orlina during an awards gala at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. “On behalf of ICTSI chairman Mr. Enrique K. Razon Jr., and on behalf as well of the men and women behind the success story of the MICT, I would like to express our most heartfelt gratitude to the BOI and DTI,” says Mr. Gonzalez. “For the past 29 years, the BOI has been a key partner in the continuous development of the Philippines’ most important container terminal. Thanks to BOI, our capital funding in Manila has institutionalized MICT as the largest, most modern and premier trade gateway in the country. Without BOI, ICTSI would have not achieved its stature today—the only truly Filipino global multinational,” he adds. ICTSI is monitored for its multi-billion peso capital investments in MICT since its registration in BOI in 1990. BOI ensures that ICTSI projects are completed and delivered on time in the light of government incentives. For the last three decades, ICTSI has a proven track record of exceeding government compliance especially with its contractual commitments in the operations, management and development of the MICT. “Our MICT success story is what we have replicated in our concessions overseas, and this again would not have been possible without the BOI’s support. This public-private
partnership at the Port of Manila is something we Filipinos can all be proud of,” says Mr. Gonzalez. The MICT, as ICTSI’s flagship base, is the Company’s benchmark in the development of its terminals worldwide. As of date, ICTSI has a portfolio of 31 port terminals and projects in 18 countries, and has a workforce of 10,000 employees worldwide, 2,000 of whom are based in the Philippines. Filipino brand breaking through globally DTI Undersecretary and BOI Managing Head Ceferino Rodolfo underscored a Guinogulan awardee’s stature as a world class and global Filipino company: “The award does not only support Philippine global branding but also further highlights the competitive advantages of doing business in the Philippines with the awardees as living proofs and testimonies to the viability and profitability of doing business in the country.” The Guinogulan is the highest award conferred by a host government and its home country to ICTSI in recent months. For the past years, ICTSI and its subsidiaries have been receiving local and international accolades for excellence in supply chain management, corporate governance, financial management, investor relations, people management, industrial relations, innovation and technology, sustainability, public relations and communication, and CSR and philanthropy.

SBITC links to Cebu,
New Container Terminals 1 and 2 at the Subic Bay Freeport is now connected to the ports of Cebu and Cagayan de Oro via a recently launched container barge service seen to boost the facilitation of international and local trade in the Philippines. The new service, launched last August, is a partnership between Subic Bay International Terminal Corp. (SBITC) and Cebu Sea Charterers, Inc. (CSC).

The service highlights the value of Subic in the country’s logistics chain. Located north of Metro Manila, Subic offers efficiency because of the surrounding road infrastructure and its accessibility to larger ships. “The primary objective of this is to make trade more efficient without the need to go through the traffic of Manila. Subic will definitely be more cost-effective and logistically efficient for shippers north of Manila to use for their domestic shipments if you quantify the costs in the current situation in the ports of Manila. But more importantly, this service opens more opportunities for shippers located outside of Luzon to connect to more global destinations and providers through Subic,” said Robero Locsin, SBITC President. The weekly service, which utilizes a 150-TEU roll-on/roll-off land craft transport vessel, makes direct calls from Subic to Cebu, and from Subic to Cagayan de Oro, and vice versa. Cebu serves as a transshipment hub for Bacolod, Iloilo, Samar, and Leyte, while Cagayan serves as a gateway for Mindanao. “We are made up thousands of islands, where only a few major ports are accessible for the global destinations. Imagine the untapped export potential of our country if we are able to maximize the vessel connectivity in SBITC, light vessel traffic in Subic, and the berth flexibility of LCTs in the untapped islands,” said Mr. Locsin. “We will be opening up new opportunities as we coordinate more with regulators in these ports to ensure all cargo movements are above board and can move efficiently and legally. Hopefully, the service will create a new product to facilitate the growth of the rest of the country and connect them to the rest of the world,” he adds.

(ICTSI) Chairman and President, attended the ASEAN Business Awards 2017 held at the Grand Ballroom of the Solaire Resorts & Casino in ParaĂąaque, Manila last 6 September. More than 900 guests composed of ASEAN delegates and economic ministers, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and region's leading businessmen were present at the gala. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte of the Philippines also attended the event and presented the awards to women, young entrepreneurs, and the outstanding small and medium enterprises in the region. ICTSI is a proud partner of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, which is the lead organization for all the events. The Philippines chairs the 2017 ASEAN, which is also celebrating its 50th year.

South Pacific head International Container Terminal Services Inc., (ICTSI) has appointed Ted Muttiah as Chief Executive Officer of ICTSI South Pacific effective 1 September. Concurrently, he is also the CEO of South Pacific International Container Terminal Ltd. and Motukea International Terminal Ltd., ICTSI’s new subsidiaries in Papua New Guinea.

Mr. Muttiah has over three decades of shipping industry experience in seven countries. Prior to joining ICTSI, he served as Chief Commercial Officer of South Asia Gateway Terminal in the Port of Colombo in Sri Lanka for three years. He helped the terminal achieve consistent growth despite growing competition and challenging global liner container industry environment.
Mr. Muttiah, his wife, and daughter currently reside in Melbourne, Australia.
Mr. Muttiah also played rugby and was part of the Sri Lanka national team that participated in the 1984 Asiad tournament.
He was also part of American President Lines until 2014, holding several senior positions and command responsibilities spanning Oceania, South East Asia, the Middle East and Africa. In 1982, Mr. Muttiah started his professional career in Sri Lanka as a management trainee with Mackinnon Mackenzie Shipping. Two years later, he migrated to Australia where he continued his tenure with P&O Containers, holding several frontline leadership roles until 1999, subsequently joining Evergreen. He obtained his Masters in Business Administration in Strategic Management from the Swinburne Graduate School of Entrepreneurship. He is a fellow of the Chartered

International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has named Guido Heremans as the new Managing Director of Madagascar International Container Terminal (MICTSL) effective 1 October. He brings with him more than three decades of knowledge and expertise in the maritime industry. Prior to joining ICTSI, Mr. Hereman held senior positions at ports and terminals in Lome, Djibouti, Dakar, and Algeria. Mr. Heremans replaces Rachid Baho, who led MICTSL for three years.

PICT organized a gathering last August to celebrate yet another fruitful year, bringing together everyone who had been part of the Company’s journey for the past 15 years.
Several team building exercises also provided engagement opportunities for the management and personnel. A question and answer session about workplace safety showed that everyone is highly aware and understands the Company’s safety-related policies.
“PICT has been all about excellence. We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the past 15 years since we started our operation. Let us celebrate all the men and women who, in one way or another, helped make PICT what it is today – a world-class port facility in the service of the Pakistani people,” said Khurram Aziz Khan, PICT Chief Executive Officer. The event also commemorated PICT’s citation in this year’s Chairman’s Cup and Pakistan’s 70 years of sovereignty. The country celebrates Independence Day every 14 August. After congratulating everyone in attendance, Mr. Khan also

APSA vice chairmanship Syed Muhammad Imran Moosa, Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT) Marketing and Commercial Manager, was recently elected senior vice chairman of All Pakistan Shipping Association (APSA). Unopposed, Mr. Moosa gave PICT its first senior vice chairmanship position in APSA. The APSA represents majority of local, regional and international shipping-related organizations in Pakistan and delegates a commissioner for the port authority. It lobbies, negotiates, and advises on behalf of its members, promoting industry development and interest.

Wan Hai Lines senior officials from the Taipei and Dubai offices met with Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT) management last 11 September to discuss mutual interests and possible business opportunities. The delegation was led by Bryan Ma, Deputy Vice President, and Andy Chen, Business Project General Manager from Taiwan; and Vincent Lin, General Manager, from Dubai. They were accompanied by representatives of Riazeda Pvt. Ltd., Wan Hai’s local shipping agents. Khurram Aziz Khan, PICT Chief Executive Officer, toured the visitors to inspect the operations and facilities at the terminal. Wan Hai is one of PICT’s prime customers.
Pakistan Ports & Shipping minister visits PICT
Pakistan’s Minister of State for Ministry of Ports & Shipping Chaudhry Jaffar Iqbal, together with key management personnel from the Karachi Port Trust, recently met with Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT) officials. He was welcomed by Khurram Aziz Khan, PICT CEO, who briefed him about the ICTSI Group and its global footprint and commitment to the Karachi Port Trust. During the meeting, Mr. Khan expressed ICTSI’s intention to make a long-term investment in the country and utilize its expertise to drive high levels of efficiencies at the Port of Karachi.

(SBITC) through the Foundation’s My Reading Nook Project, which aims to improve the learning environments in public schools.

The ICTSI Foundation, in cooperation with Subic Bay International Terminal Corp. (SBITC), recently donated new storybooks and learning materials to 10 daycare centers in three barangays in Olongapo City, Zambales. The turnover was headed by Joy Lapuz, ICTSI Foundation Program Operations Manager, and was attended by teachers, barangay captains, and representatives from the City Social Welfare and Development Office. This was followed by a storytelling session with daycare students. Benefiting a total of 446 children aged three to five years old, the donation is part of the Foundation’s Project AIDE (Assistance to Improve Daycare Education). The goal of the project is to improve daycare education through the repair and renovation of daycare facilities, professional development seminars for teachers, and provision of reading materials and education toys for students.
