IRONWORKS The structures and furnishings in this catalog were designed and fabricated to resemble the early iron and steel bridges that crossed America’s rivers, streams and gulleys in the early part of the 20th century. They are chatracterized by large, straight “I” beams, brackets and braces connected by hundreds of round headed rivets. The large laminated wood beams fit well with the I-beams, and the wood roof decks reflect the wood decks of the old road way bridges. They are also a throwback to the superstructures of monuments like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, built in the 1920s and 1930s. This raw,

industrial form of construction is enjoying a rennaisance of sorts due in large part by projects such as the High Line, an abandoned elevated rail structure turned public park in New York City. These structures fit well in recreation areas where this type of construction is present in existing bridges and buildings. Wood beams and roof deck used to compliment the industrial steel look, offers you the strength of steel with the warmth of wood.

THE EVOLUTION OF AN IDEA

3

For almost thirty years, steel framed picnic shelters have been made of tubular steel, with fasteners hidden within the tubing. The personnel at ICON were part of a group that actually wrote the spec that eliminated the use of I-beams and open channel. However, they came to the realization that in some situations, hidden fasteners are overrated; they like seeing the connections! As more and more older infrastructure was restored and reused, the industrial look gained in popularity. And they figured “why not?” In early 2014, they began looking at designs of furniture made from old machinery parts and wood slabs. They looked at commercial and residential buildings with exposed I-beams and heavy wood beams. And they got an idea for a “new” look in shelters and site furnishings. The IRONWORKS line of products consistes of large gable shelters in one and two story configurations, smaller, two-column shelters for use in public transit or individual picnic shelters, and a line of site furnishings designed to compliment the shelters. The photos on this page are from three separate trade shows where ICON exhibited the IRONWORKS line of shelters and furnishings.

Two story IRONWORKS shelters can be open, covered or partially covered, as shown in the illustrations on this page. In the case of covered shelters with a straight run staircase, the staircase will be under the roof. U-shaped stairs and circular stairs will be outside the roof. The second story floor will have a structural galvanized substrate over which concrete is poured. Concrete should be sloped to one edge, where water can be picked up by a gutter. Stairs can be concrete, wood or steel mesh. Pedestal lights are available for the tops of railing posts. Railings can be welded steel pickets, steel grid panels or tempered safety glass.

Twin structural I-beams straddle architectural grade glu-lam rafters. Galavanized caps cover the tops of the expose wood and the tops of the I-beam columns. Welded structural grid panels bolt to the I-beam webs for lateral stability.

The Twin Column/Extended Rafter IRONWORKS shelters are an updated look to the retro- industrial shelters that were originally released. They demonstrate that the IRONWORKS look can be applied to comtemperary shelters to achieve a completely different type of structure. The extended rafters are capped with galvanized steel to protect the exposed wood from UV damage, and the rivetted caps on the column tops continue that look. As with the all of the other IRONWORKS shelters, rivet plates are applied to the I-beam columns at connection points.

SHELTER ACCESSORIES

Ridge Ornamentation Cast Iron treillage and spires run the length of the ridge. Treillage is welded to a steel cap, and the spires connect to the end of the ridge frame.

Gable Ornamentation Cross bracing fits between the rafter members, with or without circular medallions in the gable ends.

Illuminated Channel Letters Modern versions of the metal channel letters from the early 20th century (shown at right). Letter faces are colored Plexiglass. Internal illumination is with LED lights. Vintage Style Electric Signs Early electric signs were light letters on a dark background, with the letters illuminated by neon tube, as shown below left. Today’s signs have replaced the neon with LED lights. This version has a laser-cut steel face with plexiglass backer fixed to a metal cabinet.
