PUBLISHER’S LETTER Well, it’s an age thing ... hahaha, I so wanted to write this. And I guess I will have to buy him a drink for doing so. All kidding aside, I’ll miss him. “Wait, what?” Yes, Terry retired - from his position as publisher of The Okanagan Valley Newspaper Group. After 28 years working for the company, he decided that it is time for some new business endeavours. And at a very youthful 53 (maybe he buys ME a drink now...) we can’t wait to hear and see where the next chapter will take him. He won’t be bored, that’s for sure, as he already serves on the board of the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, Telus Community Board and Canadian Newspaper Advisory Council; and is a trustee for the Printing Industry Health & Welfare Board.

Here’s to you, Terry! All the best, and thanks for believing in our little lifestyle magazine! Let’s grab a beer soon ... as always! Krista Frasz will continue to oversee sales and content and since she has been a part of ICON from the first day the magazine was published by The Okanagan Valley Newspaper Group nothing really changes - we endeavor to deliver a great magazine to our devoted readers throughout the valley! The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

With every passing decade we get farther from the cultural norms that made society seem to run with a bit more refinement and class. At what point did we stop passing down the original traditions of chivalry and respect? For those brave among us willing to step up to stand out, becoming a true gentleman is really quite simple. In one sentence, being a gentleman (or a lady for that matter) is about making sure that everyone around you is as comfortable as possible. I’m pretty sure it can’t be put any more succinctly than that! Here is start for classing it up, toning it down, and bringing out your inner “James Bond.” They should have taught you this in school... The noodle handshake. A gentleman will always give a firm handshake and make eye contact the whole time. When you look past someone during the shake, it shows disrespect. It is also a great idea, when meeting someone for the first time, to repeat their name immediately after hearing it. It is always impressive when you recall the name of someone you met a long time ago, and everyone likes the sound of their own name. You look like a slob. It is always better to be over dressed than under dressed. Showing up to a gathering or an event with your pants falling off wearing the shirt that was closest to you on the floor when you woke up is a great way to lose people you may want to take you seriously. In general, it’s time for us to dress like a man...not a high school “smoke doors” wanna-be gangster. Get jeans that fit, a collar if possible, and lose the skate shoes. A gentleman takes pride in the way he looks. (yes, being comfortable is sometimes great too, so keep your sweat pants). Shine at a restaurant. Unless the service is awful, always tip minimum 18%. When a woman arrives to join your table and you’re seated, stand-up to greet her. Put your napkin on your lap while you’re eating, on your chair when you stand-up, and don’t turn it into something that looks like a C.S.I. rag from a murder scene. If you initiate the dinner/lunch then you should offer to pay. Pay and tip discretely...it isn’t polite to blab about the bill, money or the tip.

so you know, the girls who want a mature classy guy don’t want to talk about your money either. Game Over – So you learned about all the ridiculous dating “games” you can play to make sure you look cool and avoid being vulnerable. “Don’t call her for 3 days after the first date,” was always a favourite (sarcasm?). Grow up and get out of the game. If you like her, tell her. If you want to see her again, ask her. If she doesn’t respond favorably to that, then you chose the wrong girl. Move on. Your Mother. Treat people like you want your mom and grandma to be treated when you’re not around. Hold a door open when anyone is following you, open a car door for your date, and take it easy with horn honking and road rage. When walking, always walk between your date and any danger like traffic (or a cliff I suppose). Her safety is the most important...like your mom’s! Lana Turner said “A gentleman is simply a patient wolf.” You can be a man in the most primitive sense of it, but do it bathed in the virtues of patience, temperance and humility. Your ability to display the class and sophistication of a true gentleman is a currency in and of itself. Be a patient wolf, watch how people respond, and enjoy the fruits that it will bring.

You have money? We don’t care. The true mark of a gentleman his humility. Typically the guys who brag about money the most are the ones who did the least to earn it. We don’t want to hear all about what you drive or where you live unless we ask. Being humble is much more attractive, and later when you get into a fancy car, everyone will be impressed that you didn’t yak about it all night like a lot of guys do. Just

ALFA ROMEO STELVIO ‘QUADRIFOGLIO’ “A NEW LEGEND IS BORN”

Inspired by the immensity and grandeur of the Stelvio Pass at the Northern Italian border, the dreamers of Milan, engineers of Modena and artisans of Cassino have created the optimal vehicle for those demanding the highest level of performance and utility in equal measure. This is the all-new Stelvio Quadrifoglio, featuring Best-in-Class 505 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, born from its all-aluminum 2.9L Twin-Turbo and direct injected V6 engine, ultralight materials such as carbon fibre and aluminum, and an 8-speed automatic transmission with standard Steering Column-Mounted Aluminum Paddle Shifters. With its interior-design primed to expand the driver’s realm of possibilities, Stelvio Quadrifoglio brilliantly delivers the exhilarating driving experience of a true Italian sports car within a highperformance SUV.

ACURA RLX “OPTIMIZED BASED ON NSX LEARNINGS”

Available in 377-HP Sport Hybrid with 7-Speed DCT or 310HP Precision All-Wheel Steer mated to an all-new 10-Speed Automatic Transmission. The 377 horsepower Sport Hybrid shares supercar technology with the NSX for a powerful, precise driving experience unmatched in the segment.

AUDI A8 “VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK”

The fourth generation of the Audi A8 again provides the benchmark for Vorsprung durch Technik – with a new design language, an innovative touchscreen operating concept and a systematically electrified drive. The luxury sedan is also the first production automobile in the world to have been developed for highly automated driving: The AI traffic jam pilot takes charge of driving in slow-moving traffic at up to 60 km/h on highways where a physical barrier separates the two carriageways, while the remote parking pilot autonomously steers the A8 into and out of a parking space or a garage. The A8 comes standard with an electrified ‘mild hybrid technology ‘drivetrain. This enables coasting with the engine switched off and a smooth restart. The key element for this is the 48-volt electrical system, which in the A8 serves for the first time as the primary electrical system. The A8 is available in a 5.17 meter standard version or the A8 L, which has a 13 centimeter longer wheelbase.

BMW M5 “STARTING AT INCREDIBLE”

More powerful than ever - the numbers are impressive: The all-wheel drive system 2018 BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8 produces 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Which means Zero to 100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds. And if you want something really special, quickly place an order for the ‘First Edition.’ The sporty and elegant edition model is limited to 400 vehicles worldwide, appears in an exclusive BMW Individual Frozen Dark Red metallic paint finish and features a fascinating composition for both exterior and interior. M means a must-have for sports car enthusiasts...

AUDI A5 SPORTBACK “RE-INTERPRETED”

Pairing the sleek design of a coupé with the enhanced functionality of an avant, the new Audi A5 Sportback has it all. The stretched wheelbase, the short overhangs and the long, wraparound engine hood with power dome emphasize the dynamism of the five-door coupe. The three-dimensional Singleframe grille is significantly flatter and wider than on the previous model. With 480 liters (17.0 cu ft) of luggage capacity, the A5 Sportback rates among the best in its class. Customers can choose between two TFSI and four TDI engines.

BMW i3/ i3S “SILENCE SPEAKS VOLUMES”

The BMW i3 is the bestselling compact battery-electric vehicle in the Premium Segment worldwide since it was launched in 2014. The new BMW i3 has been altered to enhance the sporty, urban built yet elegant design. Featuring a wider track, wheel arch molding and design lines that are vastly horizontal, the BMW i3 models have morphed into a versatile, urban, innovative efficiency mobility vehicle.

BMW Z4 “SOON TO BECOME REALITY”

Yes, the above picture shows the bold Z4 concept, introduced at Pebble Beach, but we hear the production model won’t be far off. Stay tuned!

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT “THE ULTIMATE GRAND TOURER”

The redesigned 2018 Bentley Continental GT has arrived. It is far sleeker and more dynamic than the current model, with an overall profile that is lower and longer than the current Continental GT. Power is provided by an upgraded 6.0-liter W-12 (626 hp; 664 lb.ft.)

FORD MUSTANG “STANDOUT. BY DESIGN.”

The Ford Mustang gets its first major makeover since the all-new car was introduced for 2015. The good news - it is unmistakably a Mustang with a more aggressive front clip, including standard LED headlights and available LED foglights, and a lower hood with new vents. Around back, Ford has revised the LED taillights and rear fascia. Two models, with two engine choices: A 2.3L EcoBoost and a 5.0L V8.

HYUNDAI i30 FASTBACK “A SOPHISTICATED TWIST”

Hyundai is bringing four-door coupe styling to the masses. The South Korean brand unveiled its new i30 fastback at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. Hyundai says the i30 Fastback encompasses the brand’s latest design language, that is a “sophisticated twist with an elegant character,” calling it a “5-door coupe.” It was not clear by the day we went to print if this model will come to North American, but it is closely related to the Hyundai Elantra GT.

GMC TERRAIN “LIKE A PRO”

GMC’s popular Terrain compact SUV has been redesigned for 2018, with a bolder yet curvier look than the outgoing model. However, the big news is under the hood: With three new turbocharged engines, including an efficient 1.6-liter turbodiesel, advanced performance technology and efficiency, the all-new Terrain provides a remarkable range of power. The new gasoline-powered turbos will employ a nine-speed automatic transmission. Available in three trims, SLE, SLT and Denali.

HYUNDAI KONA “BOLD STYLING. COMPACT SIZE.”

The next addition to the Hyundai CUV family is “inspired by the energy, excitement and active lifestyle of the Hawaiian district it was named after.” The all-new subcompact crossover slots below the compact Tucson in Hyundai’s lineup. Billed as an “urban SUV with a low, wide stance and bold and modern styling for an adventurous buyer,” the Kona will be available with a base 2.0-liter engine (147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque), and a 1.6-liter turbo GDI engine producing 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torquet.

FORD EXHIBITION “VERSATILE AND SPACIOUS. SECOND TO NONE.”

For 2018, the Ford Expedition will feature a body made of lightweight aluminum, rather than steel. The weight savings (nearly 300 pounds/ 136 kg compared to the 2017), paired with an efficient new turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost 375 hp powertrain, is expected to provide significantly improved fuel economy. The Platinum trim level comes with a slightly heftier 400 hp and 480 lb-ft torque engine.

HONDA ACCORD “THE 10TH GENERATION”

It’s hard to believe that the Honda Accord has been around for 41 years, with more than 13 million of the midsize sedans sold since its 1976 introduction. This year we will see the 10th generation, and it’s new in almost every way. It is lower and wider than the outgoing model, with a longer wheelbase and a shorter overall length. LED low-beam headlights and tail lights are standard, with some models receiving nine-lamp full-LED high- and low-beam headlights. Accord buyers will have a choice of three all-new engines, including two turbocharged four-cylinders.

FERRARI PORTOFINO “THE ENTRY LEVEL FERRARI”

The V8-powered coupe-convertible is replacing the California T. Named after the Italian port town, the Portofino uses a 591 horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V-8. Based on a new, all-aluminium architecture, which Maranello claims ‘features a significant weight saving over the California T it replaces,’ despite being much stiffer, it comes to a whopping 0-100 km/h in under 3.5seconds and a top-speed of 320 km/h. You want it for next summer? Not a problem - delivery starts in the first quarter of next year, so get your chequebook ready.

JAGUAR E-PACE “HEAD-TURNING LOOKS”

Now, it’s not a hybrid version of Jaguar’s popular F-Pace. The E-Pace is actually the first compact SUV from Jaguar. Pretty much what the Porsche Macan is to the Cayenne. Described as “a dynamic, agile SUV with a sculpted hood and muscular rear haunches, the E-PACE has the lines of a coupe.” And with a $42,700 starting price, the E-Pace will be the most affordable car in the Jaguar lineup. Canadian models will come with a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four with 246 hp, and 269 pound-feet of torque, backed by a ninespeed automatic and AWD. On top-spec models, the turbo-four makes 296 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque.

LEXUS NX “THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT”

When the Lexus NX was introduced in 2014, no one could have predicted that it would become a worldwide sensation, outperforming sales forecasts in every one of its markets around the world—including North America, Europe and China. For the 2018 NX, the entire front fascia of the new NX has been refreshed, with the upper portion of the grille and the front bumpers redesigned to more fluidly blend into the hood and front doors, resulting in a sleeker overall shape and excellent aerodynamics. The rear end has also been refreshed. The lower rear bumper cover now involves elements of the grille’s spindle motif, and has been broadened to enhance the vehicle’s wide stance and low-center-of-gravity look. Powering the NX will be apowerful and fuel-efficient turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4, while the h’s hybrid drivetrain will continue with a 2.5-liter inline- 4 combined with a pair of electric motors.

MCLAREN 720S “RAISE YOUR LIMITS”

Lighter, stronger, faster. That’s the McLaren 720S. Taking inspiration from the Great White Shark, the designers at McLaren created a beautifully sleek yet brutally efficient hunting machine with a 710 hp twin-turbocharged V8 that prepells the new 720S to 100 km/h in an incredible 2.9 seconds. The McLaren 720S starts at $312,500 and the entire first-year supply is already sold.

LOTUS EVORA 400 “SUPERCAR STATUS”

The Lotus Evora 400 is the fastest Lotus road car of the New Millennium, worthy of supercar status. It is stylishly attractive, beautifully designed, yet purposefully aerodynamic. From its aggressive new front cooling intakes, past the fascinating lateral graphics, to its more prominent rear, 5-blade airflow diffuser and new three-element tail spoiler, it is every inch the purpose-built supercar.

JAGUAR XJR 575 “THE EPITOME OF TECHNOLOGY”

RANGE ROVER DISCOVERY SVX “THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE”

Land Rover has revealed the new Discovery SVX at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It is a production preview of the most extreme Land Rover yet, with go-anywhere capability – increased ground clearance, body and suspension lifts, more wheel articulation and large allterrain tyres ultimate. It comes with a 525PS 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol powertrain. Striking proportions, flush door handles and an integrated rear spoiler all improve aerodynamics. Features including the foil stamped grille give the vehicle’s front profile an undeniable presence. All-wheel drive system, available four-corner air suspension and a ground clearance of 9.88 in.

PORSCHE 911 GT2 RS “THE MOST POWERFUL 911 EVER”

The new 911 GT2 RS is simply the most powerful 911 ever built by Porsche – with the performance level of a super sports car. Its racing chassis with excellent cornering stability gives the new 911 GT2 RS those crucial additional seconds. And its 3.8-litre, six-cylinder, twinturbo engine producing 700 hp lends it sufficient authority to lead the field. Weighing in at 1,470 kg with a full fuel tank, the lightweight two-seater accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. The rear-wheel drive Coupé has a top speed of 340 km/h, and with its nearmotorsport drive technology, the new 911 GT2 RS trumps its predecessor by 80 hp and achieves a torque of 750 Newton metres.

MERCEDES-BENZ E-COUPE & CABRIOLET “BEAUTIFUL & BRILLIANT”

After the world’s most intelligent executive saloon, the Estate and the All-Terrain, the successful E-Class family now welcomes another new member: the Coupé & Cabriolet. The coupé-esque proportions typical of Mercedes-Benz are characterised by a distinctive front end with low-positioned sports grille and central star, a long bonnet with powerdomes, a rearward-shifted, squat greenhouse and a muscular rear end. The dynamic looks are underlined by four frameless, fully retractable side windows and the absence of a visible B-pillar. At this point, the only engine option in Canada is the E 400 4Matic with a 329-horsepower, twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6.

PORSCHE CAYENNE “THE THIRD GENERATION”

The latest Cayenne, which arrives next year as a 2019 model, is arguably the most important model in the Porsche lineup. Profits generated by the SUV are what allows Porsche to develop an everincreasing number of 911 variants, for example. Underneath the fairly familiar sheet metal, virtually everything has been renewed. The base model will most likely get a new turbocharged V-6 with 340 horsepower, while the Cayenne S has a twin-turbocharged V-6 with an impressive 440 hp. Porsche-insiders say there will be both a Cayenne Turbo and Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid. The Cayenne Turbo should come with a twin-turbocharged V-8 with 550 hp. The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, is expected to use the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid’s V-8 and electric motor combo and should be good for a whopping 680 hp.

ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM “THE WORLD’S MOST LUXURIOUS SEDAN”

The eighth iteration of the Rolls-Royce Phantom is basically a penthouse apartment hitched to four wheels and a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 rated at 563 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. A GPS system helps to optimize shift points based on where the car is going going, optimizing comfort and engine speed for corners and hills. As for the Phantom VIII’s radical claims of quietness (“The Most Silent Car in the World”), the car is basically been loaded with more than 130 kg of sound insulation to keep its occupants from the offensive noises of the outside world. Rolls-Royce also worked closely with its tyre supplier to invent ‘Silent-Seal’ tires with a foam layer placed inside the tyre to wipe out tyre cavity noise.

VOLVO XC60 “THE DYNAMIC SUV”

They call it “the evolution of the dynamic Swedish SUV. Where bold design meets a beautiful interior. Where technology is natural. Where every drive is a pleasure.” It is the first redesign for the model in nine years, and all models come with standard all-wheel drive, and while all of the powertrains on offer feature 2.0L displacements and four cylinders, the three different configurations deliver varying power outputs. The T5 engine is turbocharged for an output of 250 hp; the T6 is one of Volvo’s turbo- and super-charged Drive-E engines and pushes out 316 hp; and the T8 tacks on a plug-in hybrid system for a twin-engined, 400 hp output.

“GET IN. GET NOTICED.”

“ELEGANTLY REFINED”

The C-HR is a small hatchback that its maker calls a crossover, despite the lack of all-wheel drive. It comes in two trim levels, XLE and XLE Premium, and other than the paint job there is not much to choose from. 2.0-liter four cylinder, 144 hp; 139 lb.ft.

SMART VISION EQ “IT’S FOR SHARING”

The pure electric, completely autonomous car is built for personalization without actual ownership. Based on the Smart Fortwo, the car is the company’s vision of mobility and EVs. The tiny autonomous EV will have inductive charging and lack a steering wheel or pedals. But what it’s missing in controls, it makes up for in utility. The car will be shared not only with other individuals via ride hailing; when it’s not being used to shuttle people around, it can double as a rolling informational display. According to Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, when idle, the Vision EQ can be used to display sports scores, the weather or the time in a city center.

Volkswagen is introducing a new 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which drops the horsepower to 184, but with 221 lb.-ft. that peaks at 1,600 rpm, as well as an eight-speed automatic transmission that replaces the current six-speed, it will actually give you better performance.

And, of course, the ... TESLA MODEL 3 The Affordable Electric Car

You thought we would not show it, right? Nah, here it is ... Tesla Inc. has finally made its long-promised affordable electric car. But you might have to wait a bit before you will get it, unless you put your oder in quite a while ago. CEO Elon Musk said Tesla will build the cars as fast as it can, but acknowledged that supply issues and other complexities will make it tough to reach his goal of making 500,000 cars next year. Tesla has never made more than 100,000 cars in any of its 14 years. Tesla hopes that its US$35,000 starting price -- half the cost of Tesla’s previous models -- and range of up to 498 km, the Model 3, will take the brand from a niche luxury brand to the mainstream. Musk said more than 500,000 people worldwide have already put down a $1,000 deposit to reserve a Model 3. People ordering a car now likely won’t get it until late 2018.

2018 Porsche Panamera In 2009, Porsche introduced the Panamera and although it quickly became the best handling and most usable sedan on the market, many Porsche enthusiasts weren’t too thrilled with what they called the biggest design flaw: the hunchback-styled rear liftgate. But that’s the past. Welcome to the next generation Panamera. And it is much, much sleeker! The new Panamera brings the Porsche flyline to the four-door body style by lengthening and widening the visual impact of the new chassis. The front wheels moved forward and the rear of the roof line was lowered, thereby creating a longer and sleeker profile. Two regular models with familiar names are available: the Panamera 4S and Panamera Turbo. A 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 powers the 4S, while the Turbo is now equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Both models feature a centrally located direct injection nozzle and a pair of twin-scroll turbos. Both engines are mated to a new eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung dual-clutch gear box and send power to all four wheels via Porsche’s hang-on clutch system. Finally, the interior concept of the Panamera range includes a new Advanced Cockpit system that features black-panel touch activated switches and a large 12.3-inch TFT touchscreen display. Two configurable displays flank the centrally mounted analog tachometer. Brand new for 2018 is the “Sport Turismo” - a five-door design created for Porsche customers who desire a Panamera with increased luggage capacity, a rear seat with more luggage versatility and a lower loading edge for easier use.

BRIAN

AUGUST

So other than this business, what other businesses do you have? Well really, just August Motor Cars, which is probably more my son Matts than mine. I mean, he was sort of the instigator behind that and had the ideas behind it. So this is really my main business, but Matt is involved in this as well. Baby boomers are retiring and the second generation is coming up. What advice would you give to people coming up the ranks to potentially take over the business? I was head of Mazda Dealer Council and had a bit of a difference of opinion with the then-president of Mazda Canada. I came home one day at supper time and said to my wife, “Maybe I should sell out, I’m tired of dealing with this President,” and I looked over at Matt, who was in grade 7, and he was all sad. I said, “What is wrong with you?” and he said, “Well Dad, if you sell out you’ll ruin my life. What will I do?” So, anyway about two months later they ended up letting the president go and replaced him with a good guy. It’s not something you can force; you have to want to do it. I tried to get our daughter into this business as well, but she ended up following her passion and started SpinCo. Now she’s across Canada with that. You can’t sort of force them. Is there any kind of phrase that people around here might have heard once or twice? Treat people the way you would want to be treated yourself. That’s what we always did with our kids growing up and it seems to have worked out. I don’t want to micro manage everything people do here, so just imagine if you were on the other side of the shoe, what would you want someone to do for you? What do you want your family, friends and business associates to say about you at your funeral?

I guess that I was fair and treated everyone with fairness and respect. I never have to go and hide my face and say, “Oh my God, I sold that guy a car.” It’s been pretty good for the most part. If you could change one thing about Kelowna, what would it be? Something with the downtown. We still have the property downtown where they started on Lawrence and Pandosy. Our phone number when we first started in 1945 was 778. Which is now one of the area codes. So we were on Lawrence and Pandosy when Pandosy was spelled Pandozi. Dad and his partner bought this property on Water and Leon and everyone said, “You’ll never make a go of it; you’re too far from Main Street.” Of course the bridge wasn’t in yet. Ferries went to Queensway, so it was really off the beaten track. At one time, all of the dealers were downtown. We were the last dealer to remain there. It’s so sad to see the way that the whole area around Water/Leon is, with people sleeping on the streets and the drug issues. It would sure be nice if we could somehow get those people off the street and get them to be productive in society, and not be dying from drug overdoses and stuff like that. How has your business organization most impacted the community? My brother passed away three years ago, so my son and daughter wanted to do a fundraiser for hospice. They did a charity event up at my son’s house where they moved all the furniture out and had auction tables where they were able to raise approximately $34,000.00. The following year, they had the idea to do a dream rally. It’s amazing. People come out in the their cars, and have children from hospice as their passenger co-pilots. The kids have a great day! I was just talking to my copilot’s mom this morning to see how he was doing,

Fall 2017

as he is fighting an illness. It’s pretty neat, as a lot of the drivers keep in touch with their co-pilots. Last year we did the dream rally, raising $134,500.00. This year the rally raised $193,000.00.

Dream RallyV.2

INSPIRE. CHANGE A LIFE. REPEAT.

O

n Sunday, Aug. 6, the second annual Okanagan Dream Rally put big smiles on the faces of more than 150 special children. This is truly an amazing event, and we are honoured to have been a part of it since its inception.

As in the first year, Bernard Avenue in Kelowna was blocked off in the morning, which allowed organizers to showcase 180 luxury, muscle and super cars. From Ferraris to Lamborghinis, the mighty Dodge Viper to a big block Chevrolet, from Porsches, a Rolls-Royce, Bentleys, Maseratis and even a rare Porsche 918 hypercar, vehicles worth almost $2 million took part. Bernard Avenue turned into the biggest luxury car show the Okanagan has ever seen. Truth be told, though, it wasn’t the cars which were the stars of the day — it was the children who would be riding in the passenger seats. With invitations in hand, car owners from the Okanagan, Calgary and Vancouver volunteered their time and rides, offering children with disabilities, illness or emotional

distress a chance to become a co-pilot in the car of their dreams. The journey went from Kelowna to Penticton, where a lunch had been organized. It also offered locals the opportunity to see the cars and fill their social media accounts with pictures. “Look at this street now and why is this street full? It’s because of all of you,” said Matt August, co-founder of

providing special children and their families with an incredibly fun-filled experience of being in the hot seat of a dream car for a day.

August Family Foundation, in welcoming the crowd to Bernard Avenue. “Drivers and volunteers, you are going to make a special kid’s day today and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.” In 2016, the August Family Foundation raised $134,000 with the first Okanagan Dream Rally for the Central Okanagan Hospice Association (COHA) in support of their Bereavement Centre. This year, the rally raised $194,000, with funds going to support Autism Okanagan, KidSport Kelowna and COHA.

Many public figures attended the event, including professional snowboarder Mark McMorris, NHL player Shea Weber and Kelowna mayor Colin Basran. The exotic car co-pilot experience for the children came to an end when the cars pulled into the parking lot at August Luxury Cars. However, the car show continued with a fun after-party for the drivers, the children and their parents. A dynamic day and an unforgettable experience.

When you CHEAT the TAX MAN, you CHEAT YOURSELF

!

!

Common mistakes Business Owners make prior to Selling

In the course of doing my job as a business broker, as one might expect, I talk to numerous business owners who ask about the process of selling their businesses. When I run through the standard questions, invariably we wind up talking about sales revenue and general income. It’s pretty common how frequently a potential seller will make reference to “under the table” income. That comment is usually followed by a palpable pause on my end, followed by a discussion about how we cannot assign any value to that income in our business valuation, because it can’t be verified. This is usually followed by another lengthy pause, this time on the business owner’s end, then a comment like:

“Come on, everybody knows that a little “skimming” goes on. Everybody does it.” Don’t expect to have your cake, and eat it too. If you are hiding income you are also effectively hiding it from your potential purchasers. Additionally, if you are being openly dishonest, potential buyers may wonder just what else you may be less than truthful about. How many other skeletons are lingering in your closet? I heard a statistic recently that really puts this issue into perspective.

For every $0.19 saved in taxes on undeclared income, $2 is lost on the business valuation. It makes total sense when you do the math; in fact, I would suggest that a $2 loss may be on the low side. With a corporate tax rate of around 20 per cent, that single dollar that you don’t show as net income on your financial statement, has reduced your tax bill by around $0.19. Meanwhile, that same dollar that should be sitting on your bottom line, and subject to a multiple of 2-3-4x, isn’t there, and is not recognized. Moreover, it is also likely that

44 ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Fall 2017

the input costs necessary to earn that dollar (cost of goods sold, labour, etc.) have not changed. The result is that the business appears less efficient, have weaker margins, and lower profitability as a percentage of sales than comparable businesses in the same industry. Waiting too Long Another common mistake I see is sellers waiting too long to decide to sell their business. Many business owners lose a lot of money, because they miss their window of opportunity. Selling a small business takes an average of 9 -12 months, but it can take up to two to four years. Therefore, it pays to have an exit strategy. Proper planning prepares you for profits. Many sellers wait until they are burned out and have no interest in their business anymore. At that point, they usually don’t care about growing (or even maintaining) their business and it predictably begins to trend downward. If your business is in a downward spiral due to burnout, then it is not a good time to sell. When you are beginning to think about selling, it’s usually a sign that it’s time for you to move on, typically at that point the business is still doing well and will be in much better shape to sell. Do not wait too long to sell your business just because you think your business isn’t ready. Make your business ready!

17.DougCIconAd3.54x9.80 2017-05-12 2:57 PM Page 1

At the end of the day, if you have intention of selling your business, and want to receive full value for it, it is imperative that you show absolutely all income. Beyond receiving full value for your business, you will also be able to sleep better at night not stressing over being audited. It’s also important to remember that it could take several months, perhaps more than a year, to sell your business, if you wait until you are fed up, by then it may very well be too late. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot (or wallet) by postponing your exit strategy. If you are considering the sale of your business, do what smart sellers do and get in touch with a business broker to discuss your plan going forward.

GET THE “HANG” OF IT! The room-transforming, style-defining powers of wallpaper. by Dianne Haber

W

allpaper - that’s right, wallpaper - has made its way back into our homes, one wall at a time. Who doesn’t remember the flocked paper with the raised, typically red or black, damask print. It felt like a bristle when you would squish it under your finger. (Hope you aren’t reading this Mom!!). I had a floral theme wallpaper with including an even MORE floral feature wall in my bedroom growing up and now that I look back at the amount of pattern and colors in one small room, perhaps that was the beginning of my claustrophobia? Flipping through design magazines now, you can certainly find lots of articles highlighting wallpaper patterns available to create a unique look in a powder room, bedroom or living room. Nature inspired prints, glamorous metallic or big bold statement patterns adorn feature walls making for a more interesting space. Wallpaper can instantly transform your room and with an unlimited variety be sure to check out ideas on the numerous DIY web sites. As far as

comparing the cost of painting vs. wallpaper, paint will be a less costly option and a much easier to complete a project. If you haven’t hung wallpaper before, be sure to do some research prior to making the first cut. The end result will most definitely be worth the potential sweat and tears.

A style for every point of view

Types of wallpaper to consider would be paper or vinyl. Vinyl is great if you have little ones around as it will be more durable and washable, even scrub able. Moisture is not a wallpapers friend however so be careful with bathrooms and kitchens where high humidity can cause paper to peel. The wall surface is also important for a smooth installation, so be sure it is free of blemishes as they will be visible through paper. Go forth and search out the best option for your room. Remember to measure twice and cut once!!

AN ARTIST’S DREAM HOME OF CURIOSITIES

A

home filled with one’s cherished treasures and favorite things is a dreamy home, indeed. One of the most important design elements to any luxuriously chic property nowadays is an enhanced focus of personalized, conversationsparkling, eclectic décor infused with quality architectural features and statement design. We want to walk into a home and be instantly inundated with all of the wonderful and wacky attributes of its’ occupants. A home’s decor should not only tell your story to all who enter, but also comfort and inspire you, the owner, reminding you of all the wonderful places you’ve been, all of the precious people you’ve known and all of the glorious goals you desire to accomplish in the future. Our home’s should be a physical embodiment of the daily celebration, and simultaneously, exploration of our lives. Powerful, huh?

and upholster the chair you always watch the game in with them – or decoupage the bar top and overlay with a piece of glass because no one likes to see jerseys simply hung on the wall….). Consider a hallway of mirrors and fun, framed artwork; if you vary the sizes and styles of frames but keep a consistent monochromatic black and white image, the grouping will feel harmonized and creative!

We adore adorning! We will often dress up a simple vase or sculpture by adorning a piece of quartz crystal (great for amplifying positive energy at home) to the item. Sometimes we will graffiti a chair or cabinet to amp up the wow-factor and create an artsy mood (don’t be shy, it’s only paint!). Adorning inexpensive wallpaper with silk flowers and gemstones can transform a small room into a detail-lover’s dream. Wrapping the outside of a plain lampshade with faux leather and sewing on a fringe trim dresses up a lamp - the other option

is to line the inside of a shade with a metallic foil wrapping paper which creates a subtle gorgeous glow! Speaking of glow - this is the perfect time of year to bask in candlelight so adorn your natural (no fake scents!) candles with one-off earrings or pins for extra glam. Even something as simple as replacing basic knobs on a dresser or kitchen cabinet with more creative options (like scorpion pulls or amethyst druzies) can really make an impact for little expense. A well-designed home will improve your health, your mood, your love life, your success and attitude at work and ultimately, your daily efficiency and happiness, so treat it with respect by keeping it clean and well-maintained, style it with whimsical décor that makes you laugh (life’s best medicine) and most importantly, fill it with love and beauty!

ZALESKA

Modern bohemian accessories brand Zaleska Jewelry has evolved from the local Vancouver market scene into a prime position within the world of fashion e-commerce. The label has recently expanded to retailers across the country, and Zaleska’s designer and CEO, Sylvia Tennant, has her eye set on boutiques in the Okanagan Valley. The brand is handmade by Sylvia and her talented team of silversmiths in Vancouver, B.C. and Bali, Indonesia.

“If you had told me five years ago that a significant part of my future career would be maneuvering a scooter through rice fields and jungles wearing a backpack filled with gemstones from around the world, I would have laughed in disbelief.“ The evolution of Zaleska started with Sylvia’s best friend, Danielle Noel. While attending the University of Victoria (both women hold degrees in Fine Arts and Education from the institution), they began collaborating on necklaces and rings that featured repurposed vintage findings inspired by an esoteric aesthetic. As the brand evolved, their vision for Zaleska grew into the idea that jewelry had a greater purpose than simply adornment - it could ultimately enhance one’s state of being. Incorporating crystals into the line came from a genuine interest in metaphysics, and Sylvia began studying the countless civilizations that used gemstones for healing and honing energetic fields. By 2016, when demand for the brand’s signature crystal jewelry started to overwhelm production from Sylvia’s kitchen table. “I knew at that point that I needed to have balance to enjoy my work, so we decided to go to Bali.” A press trip for NICHE Magazine and DRIFT Travel (two luxury magazines Sylvia has accessories and travel columns in) turned into a serendipitous meeting with a talented team of silversmiths. With only ten days to spare, they collaborated with Sylvia to bring part of the Zaleska sketchbooks to life. Staying true to the brand’s tagline, “mystic crystals for the modern bohème,” featured gemstones in each collection include labradorite, opal, moonstone, and sapphire. Zaleska’s subtle designs cater to a wide variety of customers, many of whom have been supporters since its inception. Since last year’s design trip, Sylvia returned to the magical island of Bali once again to create the brand’s latest collection, “Into the Mystic.” The consistency of her visits have affirmed her business contacts and helped orchestrate the growth of her brand vision. She still makes 60% of the line herself though – at the same kitchen table that hosted the very first designs.

Shoes & Bras!!

They have more in common than you think!

How good do running shoes actually look with a cocktail dress? or Would you run a marathon in 4 inch platform stilettos? Yes it is a quirky way to start off an article about bras however some bras can have an expanded range of uses kind of like the running shoe, and others not. So let’s talk types of bras! The number one request we get in the shop is for the “Push-Up” bra ,however “Push-Up” bra can be defined as two different things. For a number of women who have never been fitted or worn bras that fit their body a “Push-Up” bra in their mind is simply a bra that gathers up “the girls” and lifts them to a position approximately where they once were. In our world every properly fitted bra should lift, support and separate the breasts on the body filling the description of “Push-Up” bra. The second type of “Push-Up” bra is designed to enhance and accentuate cleavage - in our house my cleavage bra is lovingly referred to as the “date night” or the “Angela has bad news to deliver - please stare directly into the cleavage bra”! These bras can deliver the great cleavage however aren’t always the most practical “high activity” bras. <Insert discussion with a woman why her breasts kept popping out of the top of her cleavage bra while she was skiing moguls or why we don’t run marathons in stilettos.> The other area where there seems to be confusion is between actual “Sports bras” and what we call “Leisure Bras”. True Sports Bras are evaluated on how much movement of the breast they prevent during activity. Typically these are the bras that are more expansive in form and tend to fit snuggly to the body in order to perform. Women who exercise frequently or who have physically demanding jobs tend to lean towards these bras for maximum support . < The reality is that I have yet to hear the term “sexy” applied to these bras. > Often “leisure bras” get called sports bras however what women are looking for is the exact opposite of a Sports bra. Leisure bras are usually slip on bras that provides a little coverage and a little support without feeling compressive. < I usually compare these bras to slippers.> Now don’t even get me started on the definitions of T-shirt bras! Basically the best advice I can give a woman who is bra shopping is to talk with your fitter about what you want the bras to do in your wardrobe and how you want them to feel. Please keep in mind there is not one bra that does everything for everyone, <see article about Unicorn Hunts!> and try on different options you’ll be surprised what you find!

iconic events! A Splash of Red Aug 24, 2017, Vernon Photos and story by Kristin Froneman

In her later years, Vernon-raised artist Sveva Caetani, who was born into a known Italian aristocratic family, liked to throw lavish garden parties showcasing her and her fellow artists’ work. Now 23 years since her death, Sveva’s legacy lives on with the Splash of Red fundraiser. This year’s sold-out event, held Aug. 24, saw more than 150 revellers dressed in their finery, with a splash of red for good measure, gather on the beautiful grounds of the Caetanis’ former home, an early 20th century mansion located on Vernon’s Pleasant Valley Road. Gifted to the city, the home and property is now run as a cultural centre, with artist studios, and offering artist residencies, exhibitions, programs, and outdoor music concerts. However, the hope is to one day open the inside of the home to the public. “We have never been able to fully realize our potential to open to the public because we had things holding us back such as a sprinkler system, fire safety and other electrical work. It had to be safe,” said Susan Brandoli, executive director of the Caetani Cultural Centre. Events such as the Splash of Red are integral to the Caetani Cultural Society’s fundraising efforts that coincide with government grants. Besides supping on a delectable four-course, sitdown Italian dinner catered and prepared by Basket Case Picnics, patrons willingly used their bidding paddles during the live auction to bid on donated pieces of art by such well-known Okanagan artists as Doug Alcock, AJ Jaeger, Wanda Lock, Michelle Loughery, Destanne Norris, Julie Oakes, and Heidi Thompson.

They were helped along by auctioneer Paul Bielby, whose art knowledge and encouraging banter helped secure more than $50,000 and see that Sveva’s vision for her home finally comes to fruition.

health|beauty The Vampire Facial: How & Why PRP Works.

by Dr. Janna Bentley

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment has been popularized by celebrities... but even if you never read the tabloids at the Save-On Foods checkout, you may now be bloody curious.

What makes PRP enticing for many is that it doesn’t use anything foreign or artificial – there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction – making it a rather safe choice.

PRP is a Health Canada approved collagen stimulating therapy, ideal for treating ageing skin on the face, neck, eyes, hands and décolletage. It is commonly used in the treatment of hair loss – more below. Key: it uses the patient’s own platelets extracted from a small sample of their blood.

There is a chance of some redness, swelling or bruising with Fractora (possibly a few days), but much less so with Microneedling (any effects subside in hours typically).

As we age, collagen and elastin become depleted in our skin causing lines, wrinkles and thin skin. PRP is designed to reverse this: improve the texture and tone of the skin, helping it become progressively thicker, tighter and suppler. Vampire Maybe... But Not Magic While commonly referred to as the Vampire Facelift, PRP improves texture and reduces fine lines. However, it is not a magic silver bullet – there simply aren’t any quick or cheap fixes to the march of time! So it is best with other antiaging therapies (eg regular SPF, skin care products, laser treatments or Botox/dermal filler).

Value Patients typically pay $500 to $750 per treatment (depending on the clinic), with a treatment regime of three treatments recommended on average. Treatments are separated by approximately a month each. More treatments are often needed for scar treatment or hair growth stimulation. As stated, each patient needs a personal consult.

Process & How it Works PRP starts with taking a small sample of the patient’s blood with a syringe – no fangs, just to be clear. Next, the blood sample is spun in a medical centrifuge (about 10 minutes, onsite) to concentrate the platelet rich plasma. Finally, the patient’s own plasma is then infiltrated (injected and/or massaged) into the desired areas. Activation causes platelets to release essential growth factors and signaling proteins, which are responsible for the wound-healing process and skin rejuvenation. Various Methods to Deliver PRP There are several common methods of delivering the plasma into the treatment area: 1. A medical energy radio-frequency (RF) device, like Fractora, micro-punctures the skin. Fractora+PRP promises the most results (in terms of collagen growth). 2. Microneedling: a pen-sized medical device delivers a series of micro-needle punctures. 3. Syringe: a very fine-gauge needle is used to inject the serum.

PRP for Hair Loss in Any Gender When PRP is concentrated with larger volumes it can be used for stimulating hair growth in men and women suffering from pattern baldness since PRP contains growth factors that stimulate the development of new hair follicles and improve the health of existing ones. PRP is injected in a pattern with very small-gauge syringe. Note: PRP is not a cure for baldness (Androgenic Alopecia). This therapy is best for patients who are not candidates for a surgery or those wanting a nonsurgical approach to hair loss therapy. Platelet Rich Plasma Conclusion PRP is an increasingly popular treatment. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to brighten up your face – or to stimulate hair growth – and you can do this pretty quickly via PRP, with few side effects and a short recovery time.

PRP takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes to perform. Downtime & Risk First off, PRP should be performed by a doctor or qualified nurse in an accredited medical facility. PRP itself is not new – it has been used effectively for years in the treatment of burns, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and physiotherapy to accelerate wound healing. It is considered quite safe: a very low risk of any complication.

The Lady

by Kristine Jones

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

Time-Saving Mom-Cuts When I was younger, I would look at Kool-Aid stained kids and vow to never be that mom who let her kids out of the house with a dirty. Today, I’m shoving PB toast in their mouths while simultaneously yelling at them to brush their teeth... and if my two kids only leave the house with WonderBread crumbs on their faces and crusty toothpaste in the corners of their mouths, I feel like it’s a good start to the day. When I was younger, I also swore that I’d never take my unwashed hair and toss it up into a ponytail with a scrunchie from 1992 and then hit up the grocery store. Today, I’m not only rocking the scrunchie, but I’ve started to relate to my grandma when she would complain about the rising cost of cauliflower. Right?!! I’ve even become that parent who freaks out over lights being left on. This was something my brother and I used to mock my dad for... when did this happen?! When did I lose my coolness? (Or maybe I was never cool?) Being a busy working mom has pretty much sucked any coolness right out of me. Not that I have given up and my youth, I’ve just started to embrace the title “Working Mom” and I’m no longer the mom pretending to have to all together, when some days I clearly do not. I’ve even mastered some mom-shortcuts along the way. Things that help me survive everyday chaos... that I’ll shamelessly share... No Time to Bake You want to contribute, but don’t have time to bake? Who cares... those Lofthouse cookies that pop up at every holiday are a total hit. Potato Salad Costco potato salad is awesome. Scoop it into a bowl, add a few hard boiled eggs and sprinkle with paprika. #crowdpleaser

Instant Coffee Keep a jar in the cupboard. Most days I just spoon it into a cup, add hot tap water and keep on running... (I don’t actually run, and my elliptical is a great coat-hook too) Baby Lips By Maybelline. I keep these lip balms everywhere. They make any dark, disastrous day turn into unicorn and kittens pretty. So fresh and so inexpensive; they add just enough tint to look polished. Her name is Dustiny Central vac used to be a must-have for me - but then I met Dustiny, my Dyson Animal. When there’s a Cheerios disaster, I let the kids suck it up - literally. There’s no time to haul out that beast from the closet 164 feet across the house! (Slight exaggeration, maybe) Inside-Out-Right “You put it into the dirty laundry inside-out, therefore it’s getting folded inside-out.” ... you might not think this saves time, but it does, and it feels perfectly rebellious too! Now, I’m not saying that every working mom is a mess, I’m saying that every mom is a #hotmess and these are some sneaky ways to stay cool along the way; or should I say, “keep our cool” along the way?! Oh and, the most important mom-cut, always buy two bottles of wine at a time. Not only do you end up with an emergency bottle for yourself, but you never know when you might need to give a last minute gift. Eventually our kids will realize just how cool we are; once they are sending their own kids out the door with a Kool-Aid moustache and mismatched socks. Until then, keep cool and carry on ladies!

Birthday Party Shopping The kids can make the birthday card, and as for a gift... movie passes in bulk. Tuck them away for gifts. Gender neutral and no last minute shopping. Kristine Jones ~ From a Thirties Girl Twitter @whitedaisies14 Facebook: Kristine Jones

Keep Your Eyes Closed Mom’s wake up when our kids do... but kids don’t need to know that. When they come to your side of the bed and stare, pretend to sleep. They eventually go play.

One day I’ll learn that Snap Chat thing. But that can be my 2018 resolution…

When consumers and restauranteurs come across a bottle marked as a B.C. Wine Award winner, they don’t have to worry about disappointment. To determine the cream of the crop, each year the B.C. Wine Awards brings together many judges to undergo a tedious tasting session of hundreds of wines. “The B.C. Wine Awards is a well-marketed, professional wine competition that is respected by the industry and marketed well to consumers. It will result in significant incremental sales of a wine that wins a particular award,” says Blair Baldwin, general manager of the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society.

THE CREAM OF THE CROP THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE 2017 B.C. WINE AWARD WINNERS The oldest B.C. wine competition, the British Columbia Wine Awards is also the province’s largest. This year’s esteemed panel of professionals, which came together on September 14-17, brought experience from coast to coast in Canada, as well as from the Pacific Northwest in the United States.

This prestigious award for the overall best wine went to Sandhill Wines for its “Terroir Driven” 2015 Syrah. Another seven wineries received a platinum award.

“We exercise a high degree of professionalism; there are no ulterior motives, meaning you don’t have somebody trying to make money off the competition,” Baldwin said. “It’s truly honorable and objective in nature; that’s why the industry gives it so much support.”

So maybe keep this guide handy for your next purchase at a winery or your local liquor store.

This competition is open to all B.C. wineries that use 100 per cent fruit grown in the province. Last year’s competition saw an impressive 620 entries.

About The Okanagan Wine Festivals Society

The Premier’s Wine Award Several hundred wines were tasted before the medals were awarded to the winning wineries. The most prestigous award is the Premier’s Award. It is elected from all platinum medals, and, based on the judges’ consensus, is named the best wine in British Columbia. This award was introduced in 2014 as a legacy for the sitting Premier to present annually, given the stature of British Columbia’s wine industry.

Pages 84 and 85 list all of the gold, silver and bronze medal winners. Congratulations!

The Okanagan Wine Festivals Society is well known for producing four seasonally inspired Okanagan Wine Festivals annually in winter, spring, summer and fall. Its Winter Okanagan Wine Festival is run in partnership with Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops and its Summer Okanagan Wine Festival is run in partnership with Silver Star Mountain Resort. It is also responsible for Signature Wine Events including Cropped by Valley First, the WestJet Wine Tastings and others, and produces and runs the British Columbia Best of Varietal Wine Competition and the Province’s most prestigious and oldest wine competition – the B.C. Wine Awards. For more information visit www.thewinefestivals.com Fall 2017

Paul Zitarelli of Seattle’s Full Pull Wines was one of 10 judges for this year’s British Columbia Wine Awards, which were handed out during the 37th annual Fall Okanagan Wine Festival, Sept. 28 to Oct. 10.

“a keen sense of smell”

ZITARELLI Last year, Paul Zitarelli arrived with a wicked head cold to judge the British Columbia Wine Awards. “I could hardly smell and taste the first day,” he said with a laugh. “By the second day, I was better and smelled and tasted some amazing wines.” Zitarelli, the founder, owner and operator of Seattle-based Full Pull Wines, was back for an encore this year to judge, clear-headed and enthusiastic. Zitarelli, who is on level four of five on his path to a Masters of Wine, was one of 10 respected judges who tasted 600 wines in three days, Sept. 15-17, at the Penticton Trade & Convention Centre. His routine for tasting 100 to 200 wines a day is to favour his keen sense of smell and aroma detection, because his palette can “get bludgeoned” tasting so many wines in a row.

All the winners were announced Sept. 28 at the 37th annual Fall Okanagan Wine Festival kick- off B.C. Wine Awards gala at the Laurel Packing House in Kelowna. Guests who paid $55 to attend were also able to sip medal-winning vintages. A full list of winners can be found in the previous pages and at TheWineFestivals.com. The judges’ visit to the Okanagan wasn’t all work and no play. They got out daily to visit wineries – Lake Country’s Arrowleaf, Penticton’s Time and Naramata’s La Frenz – and had magical meals at Gray Monk in Lake Country, Lake Breeze in Naramata and Play Estate in Penticton.

He also eats lots of crackers to cleanse his taste buds and drinks litres of water to stay hydrated.

Zitarelli came to wine and judging in a roundabout way. He and his wife have always been wine lovers, but when they were living in Boston he was working for a firm, called Carney Sandoe & Associates, that matched teachers with jobs.

“But tons of water also means running to the washroom constantly,” he said with a chuckle.

That job, fortuitously, led to the the name of Zitarelli’s company, Full Pull Wines.

The judges’ sniffing, slurping, spitting and expert evaluations determined which wines deserve B.C. Wine Awards platinum, gold, silver and bronze medals.

While on a Carney corporate retreat in the Adirondack Mountains, Zitarelli had a glorious day hiking in the sunshine, eating locally-sourced foods and sipping fine wine.

The contest also feature the Premier’s Medal, an accolade bestowed on one, and only one, wine annually as the ultimate prize, the best wine in British Columbia.

When discussing his day with Jim Carney, the company CEO quipped such good times in good weather is what they call a Full Pull in the Adirondacks. The phrase resonated with Zitarelli and when it came time to name his company after moving to Seattle, Full Pull made the grade.

Last year, the Premier’s Medal was won by the 2014 Pinot Noir Cuvee by Kelowna’s SpierHead Winery. Who will it be this year?

In 2009, FullPullWines.com went live selling wines online to members who Fall 2017

simply have to sign up free as members. “Eight per cent of the wines we sell are from Washington state and Oregon,” said Zitarelli. “But after my latest trip to the Okanagan, I’d love to start importing some B.C. wine to sell in our system.” First up, he’d like to import some Quails’ Gate Pinot Noir from Kelowna because its so yummy and he’s currently on a Pinot jag.

He and his wife are also drinking a lot of fresh Savioe white wines from the French region that borders Switzerland and rose “from anywhere.” In the past, Full Pull has sold some Blue Mountain sparkling wines from Okanagan Falls, and Zitarelli would like to do so again. Zitarelli also judges at other competitions for the Great Northwest Wine organization and writes a regular Tasting Notes column for Seattle magazine. www.iconokanagan.com

the tasting note

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

Oh darn, summer is gone. Yes, we still have warm and sunny days, but the evenings are getting cooler and the leaves clearly tell us it’s FALL! And as we all know, there are certain wines that are appropriate for different seasons of the year. Most of us drink more whites and rosés in warmer weather and reds that are light- to medium-bodied and have a range of spicy flavors in colder weather. As for the whites, Viognier, Roussanne or Chardonnay comes to mind. Well, we are blessed with outstanding wines right here in the Valley, so come and join us on our quest to find the best wines for fall moods and cuddly evenigs.

2014 MISCONDUCT FUMÈ BLANC

2013 OLIVER TWIST SYRAH

2014 PAINTED ROCK RED ICON

How can you not love this wine? Wait, we are not even talking about the wine itself, we mean the bottle. Or better, the label. Audrey Hepburn? Breakfast at Tiffany’s? Tiffany & Co? Got it? Yep! But now to the wine ...

This award-winning (Gold - 2017 BC Spring Best of Varietal | Gold - 2017 National Wine Awards of Canada | Silver - 2016 NorthWest Wine Summit) is savory, spicy, and lingering.

We received at bottle of Painted Rock’s signature wine at our launch party in 2010. We still have it. Unopened. Memories. And as proprietor John Skinner says: “Those who cellar this wine will be rewarded.”

Notes of smoky bacon, blackberry, black plum, and warm spice aromas meet the nose on this medium-to full-bodied dark fruit flavored wine. It spent 12 months in French and American oak barrels creating beautiful soft vanilla tannins, good structure, and a long finish.

Part of the Suspect Series, the 2014 Fumé Blanc is 100% stainless steel fermented, followed by four weeks contact with American Oak with a medium toast. The result? Flavours of lemon, lime, tropical fruits with hints of fresh cut herbs and traces of smoke, spice and vanilla. We had this amazing wine with a spicy shrimp ravioli in a citrus achiote vinaigrette. $25.00 Alc./Vol.: 12.6% www.misconductwineco.com

This Syrah pairs perfectly with roast pork, spice rubbed chicken, or grilled meat.

2

A blend of 33% Merlot, 21%, Cabernet Franc, 19% Malbec 16% Petit Verdot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine shows rich aromas of blackberry, dark plums, cassis and sweet spices. The palate, with its velvety tannins and high acid, offers juicy black fruit layered with pepper, baking spices, vanilla & chocolate. $47.79 Alc./Vol.: 14.3% www.paintedrock.ca

3

2015 TANTALUS PINOT NOIR

2016 KITSCH DRY RIESLING

A rich garnet in colour, the nose is bursting of lingonberry, Bing cherry and sweet anise alongside floral notes of crushed rose petal and violet. Ripe raspberry and dark plum emerge on the palate with an intriguing graphite minerality on the finish.

Not into a sweet wine? This Riesling is the other side of the spectrum from the sweeter, more traditional Kitsch Riesling which we have reviewed a while ago (it was judged best of variety at the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival).

All sourced from their single vineyard estate, select Pinot Noir blocks were handpicked and vinified in small lots using entirely wild fermentation.

“With bright acid, this age-worthy Riesling is reminiscent of a zesty and zippy lime margarita with a twist of ginger to spice up your life.” This Dry Riesling will age for at least 10 years , but can be enjoyed right away.

The small batches were then placed into a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques for 12 months and blended, unfined and unfiltered, just prior to bottling. Although enjoyed in its youth we see this wine aging gracefully over the next 7 to 10 years.

We actually used this wine to cook a coq au vin! The chicken was braised in the Riesling and silky-rich crème fraîche was then stirred in at the end, making it extra-decadent. And yes, we enjoyed it with a glass of the very same wine. BOOM!
