PUBLISHER’S LETTER Happy Anniversary! To us! Yes, another year has passed. ICON Okanagan Lifestyle Magazine is now officially in its 8th year, and you are holding the 25th edition in your hands, which also marks the second year in our successful partnership with the Okanagan Valley Newspaper Group. Four times a year, we introduce our readers to what is happening in the valley, show some interesting and new products and businesses, look behind the scenes and interview some of the people in our area who make a difference. We love the fact that you, the readers, actively take part in creating our magazine, telling us about interesting places and stories to be told. Please keep doing this, as this is what the magazine is all about -- communication and information.

This time we have a “Road Trip” special introducing our communities in the Thompson-Okanagan. Summer is finally here, although it came with such speed and power that it’s causing quite some trouble for those of us who live close to the lake or to one of our creeks. But now is the time to plan some road trips, take the bike or car and explore our surrounding areas and cities, do a day trip or plan for a fun weekend journey. It’s the time of the year where we truly enjoy the outdoors, go hiking, spend time with family and friends, visit one of the many events or simply relax on one of our patios with some good food and a glass of Okanagan wine. Have fun, enjoy the summer. We’ll see you around!

On the cover ... It is always a fun time when Jana Webb visits her “other home,” the Okanagan Valley. She comes to Kelowna quite frequently, and has actually been on our cover before (although this time we decided not to put her on the roof of a car...). The JOGA founder and Real Housewives of Toronto star who just recently opened her new studio gym in Yorkville, Ont., came to the Okanagan to finalize the details of her upcoming Joga House wine, a collaboration with Perseus Winery and winemaker Jason Parkes. She also attended the An Evening Under The Stars event in Penticton during the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival. They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

“I Know What You’re Doing This Summer...”

T

here are few people who wouldn’t agree that being in the Okanagan in the summer is truly a gift. From the weather and the wine to the lakes and amazing food, this is paradise. It seems pretty common that even when surrounded by so much, we can still find ourselves looking to switch it up a bit. We all love a drink on the patio or a day on the boat with friends, but what if we want something a bit different?

If you can’t play…watch – On a hot day, why not check out a local football or a baseball game? You might be surprised at how much talent can be seen and how much fun can be had. Holding a beer or an amazing nitrate-filled hot dog doesn’t hurt either. Don’t forget your sunscreen! Time for cruise – Yes we have all seen you driving down Bernard in Kelowna in your shiny car...we were all impressed after the first two laps you did. But for a change, leave the car at home and hop on your bike. Try a cruiser bike ride by the lake, a stop for some wine or an ice cream, or just some exploring in a new neighborhood. Get moving – As we are rolling gracefully out of our youth, exercise is becoming more and more important. Take up golf and walk the course, or grab a partner or three and go play some tennis at one of the fantastic courts throughout the Okanagan. On the exceptionally hot days, try tennis at night under the lights! Remember when you were 10? - How about a day at the waterslides followed by a night at the drive-in? If you are “too cool” for this kind of day, then your friends should go without you. You are never too old for a day at the slides, and I personally challenge you to stay up for both movies. Time for a float – If you haven’t already, this is the year that you have to float one of the channels or rivers throughout the Okanagan. Grab a floaty, your best speedo, a giant hat, and get to the water. What is happening – I can’t count the number of times I have been downtown or in a random park and seen a crowd of people or vendors at an event I didn’t even know was happening. In the summer, there is a festival or a concert going on almost every day, so get online and get up to speed! I missed an event last week that featured knights in a jousting battle…I will never forgive myself. Lesson learned. Get Natural – There is something innate in humans that draws us to the idea of living and sleeping “outside.” Camping by a lake, in a forest, or even on a boat can be one of the best ways to spend a weekend. You may be the tenting/no matches/eating squirrels type, or you

14

may be the 40-foot monstrosity motor home guy, but, either way, you are going to be happier and healthier after a camping trip. Simplify – So many people forget the simplicity of just sitting and relaxing. One of the best days might be just going to the beach or a nice grassy park and actually laying out with a book. Maybe there are some Saturdays where you don’t have to sit on a patio, spend money, and try to guess what work people walking by have had done on their faces (don’t get me wrong…that is fun too). Eat with friends – Everyone loves a good barbeque. It’s a great way to see friends, enjoy a home-cooked meal, and maybe play some games. If you are looking to switch it up however, try an open invitation for a Saturday or Sunday brunch. Tell them to come after 10 a.m., whip up your best breakfast foods, and mix up a ceasar or a mimosa. It’s great way to start the day, and then you have the whole afternoon to enjoy some of the other things on this list! It’s the most exciting time of year in the Okanagan, and we have a lot of choices when we are asking “what should we do today?” It is this writer’s opinion that this is the year of simplifying, switching it up, and slowing it down. This place was paradise before we had $200,000 boats and expansive patios with loud music. You’ll still find us on both, but my smile will be just as big when sitting in front of my campfire.

A Thompson-Okanagan

ROAD TRIP The Okanagan is often referred to as “Nature’s Playground Number 1” -and for a good reason. This paradise, with its rolling hills, lush valleys, the many lakes with sandy beaches and high mountain peaks, is simply calling for outdoor adventures. And for those of us who love our cars and motorcycles it offers some of the most spectacular highways and roads in all of Canada. You can travel alongside rushing rivers with snow covered mountain peaks in the distance, drive winding roads with magic vistas of the lakes, vineyards and orchards, and you can even enjoy the thrill of a track-car experience in the South Okanagan! Take your baby (we mean your car or bike) to one of the many wineries, and/ or book a helicopter trip to see the paradise from above. There is so much to see in the Thompson Okanagan ... take your time, and enjoy!

The city is situated on the banks of the Columbia River just south of the Revelstoke Dam. The construction of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1962 eased access to the region, and since then tourism has been an important feature of the local economy, with skiing (Revelstoke holds the Canadian record for snowiest single winter) having emerged as the most prominent attraction. The all-new 2017 Yamaha EX DELUXE New for 2017 is the Yamaha EX WaveRunner Series designed for buyers seeking an affordable entry to the sport of personal watercraft, but demand the durability, reliability and quality that only Yamaha can deliver. Included in the EX Series are the EX, EX Sport and the pictured EX Deluxe. However, the EX Series is manufactured with the same durable materials and high level of craftsmanship that Yamaha is renowned for. The result is a fun, exciting Rec Lite WaveRunner that families can enjoy for years. EX DELUXE The EX DELUXE is powered by Yamaha’s award-winning TR-1 three-cylinder marine engine that is 40 percent smaller in size, 20 percent lighter in weight and provides better fuel economy than Yamaha’s previous four-cylinder Yamaha MR-1 engine. The new deck and hull design provides more space, more features, updated looks, more storage and improved handling. And new to Yamaha 21-foot models is the award-winning Connext helm control system with 7” touchscreen and joystick control.

Moving into the cockpit, there are dual Captain’s Chairs. The portside chair reclines with self-leveling arm rests and 180-degree swivel action to observe watersports.

The difference between these high-end models is the 212 Limited S includes a forwardswept aluminum watersports tower that is not included on the 212 Limited, and the 212X is designed for watersports action with its 1100 lbs triple ballast system, board racks, oversized billet aluminum rear view mirror, and a premium sound system that includes a tower-mounted sound bar, subwoofer, 500-watt amp, and six Polk audio mid-range speakers.

The refined helm layout now includes Yamaha’s award-winning Connext helm control system and joystick. Connext provides critical information such as water depth, fuel gauge, RPM, compass heading and miles per hour. Connext also serves as the entertainment hub of the boat, providing full access to radio and stereo controls, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity and USB connections. The 212 Series is powered by two 1.8L Yamaha High Output marine engines that deliver excellent performance, reliability, and durability.

Beginning at the bow, the high bow lines create a comfortable, spacious seating area for passengers big and small. Completing the bow on the 212 Limited S and Limited models are upgraded, premium stainless steel handrails, chrome plated cup holders, and premium marine vinyl seating that is hinged to make access to the expansive under-the-seat storage more convenient. There are also two great sounding speakers. The 212X features billeted, aluminum handrails and accents. All three models feature upgraded teakSummer 2017

Okanagan Dream Rally INSPIRE. CHANGE A LIFE. REPEAT.

D

photography by Steve Rosset; Gary Nylander

owntown Kelowna was unlike anything you’ve ever seen before when thousands of people lined the streets on August 7th, 2016, as more than 100 supercars and luxury vehicles departed for a round-trip to Penticton as part of the very first annual Okanagan Dream Rally. Each car had a child co-pilot, including children who had lost a loved one, had a disability or were fighting a terminal illness. Traffic over the bridge was halted as the cars departed downtown with a Kelowna fire truck leading the way. The cars were also escorted in and out of Penticton by a police car, which was where rally drivers, co-pilots, parents, and other participants stopped for lunch and enjoyed live music. Each participating vehicle was sponsored by business or organization, most of which were local to the Okanagan Valley. A wrap-up party was held at August Luxury Motorcars following the rally, and included both live and silent auctions as further fundraisers. In the end, the event raised $134,500 for the Central Okanagan Hospice Association, which will use it to support the no-charge services offered by the hospice association, including volunteer training and bereavement services. For Matt August, organizer of the rally, co-founder of the August Family Foundation, and owner of August Luxury Motorcars, a dream came true. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the response to this inaugural rally,” he said with a big smile on his face. “With the Okanagan Dream Rally, we hope to provide special children and their families with an incredibly fun-filled experience of being in the passenger seat of a dream car for a day. My favourite part of the day was watching all the drivers

having lunch with their co-pilots in Penticton. They were sitting on the ground with them, talking to them, eating with them. It was absolutely amazing to see the connection. For all of the visitors and spectators, it was a chance to see some of the most amazing exotic and luxury cars all together in one place. It’s a win-win for all of us, and especially for those in need.” August became involved with the Central Okanagan Hospice Association after his uncle Gary passed away of brain cancer at Hospice House. He is so passionate about the services they offer that he now sits on the Hospice Association’s Board of Directors. “The Gary August Fundraiser was our very first event with the Family Foundation which got the ball rolling and gave us the idea to have an annual fundraiser. The Okanagan Dream Rally started out as just an idea between Matt and his sister, Michelle,

as they were sitting on the porch one evening discussing memories of their uncle Gary. “We had no idea how big of a deal this rally was going to turn into”, said Matt, looking back at that moment. We just really want to continue with our mission to help charities and organizations within our community who have helped touch locals throughout the valley,” August says. “This year, for our second Okanagan Dream Rally, we have already more cars and drivers than last year, and more and more people are registering up each day. We also have some surprises and exciting ideas in the works!”

WEST KELOWNA

The Westside (as the locals like to call it) has always been appreciated for its quiet beaches, rolling hills of orchards, and fantastic outdoor activities. The small, sleepy town that once was has grown into a thriving independent municipality that has a ‘rural sophistication’ feel to it with vineyards, wineries, summer concerts, trails, agricultural pursuits, along with shops that offer the familiar comforts of home. It is said that West Kelowna landscapes are the most photographed in the Okanagan Valley. The dormant volcano, Mt Boucherie, has created a terrain that is dynamic and interesting, while at the same time rich and lush. Its volcanic soil has primed the land for growing premium grapes . 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT “When your lifestyle demands performance, the Elantra GT Sport delivers.” Hyundai debuted the all-new 2018 Elantra GT at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show in February, and later at the 2017 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto. Lower, wider, and longer, the all-new Elantra GT adds a more aggressive stance and interior volume to its clean European style and driving dynamics. With clean proportions, flowing character lines, and an attention grabbing new cascading grille design, the new GT imbues class and sophistication. While the outside dimensions effectively match that of most compact hatchbacks, clever ergonomics and packaging make room inside for five and so much more. In fact, with 96.5 c ft of passenger volume and nearly 25 cu ft of cargo volume, we expect the EPA to classify the Elantra GT as a large car, rarified territory for this class. The direct injection 2.0-litre makes an estimated 162 hp. It mates to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Opt for the GT Sport and get the 1.6-liter turbo engine found in the Elantra Sport and enjoy an estimated 201 hp and 195 lb/ft of torque. The six-speed manual is available or a seven-speed dual-clutch gear box.

! ?

? IF MONEY ? GREW What..

ON TREES?

I recently had the pleasure of participating in Kelowna’s Neighbourwoods program. For those of you who aren’t familiar, it is an annual program promoted by the municipality whereby they sell discounted (subsidised) trees to homeowners, in an effort to increase the percentage of canopy coverage within the City. I selected a Northwood Maple, because I thought it would do best in the location that I intended to plant it. My neighbour, who tipped me off to the program, informed me that she had shopped around at various local nurseries, and equivalent trees were priced 2-3x what we were charged through the program. While planting the tree (and congratulating myself on scooping a great deal), I began to think about how trees are priced. I imagine it’s a lot like most other retail items, there are pretty standard input costs, things like: soil, seeds, fertilizer, plastic pails, as well as other general overhead expenses such as: labour, land usage, property taxes, etc. Naturally, there also needs to be a reasonable amount of margin added to the price to not only cover the expenses, but also allow for some profit. It occurred to me, that the people cultivating these saplings, were effectively planting money, which made my mind wander a little further and think,

If money grew on trees, how would they assign a price to them? Yield is King

The most relevant analogy I could think of for pricing a money producing tree is that of valuating a business. Generally speaking, the more money a business makes, the more it is worth to a buyer. One of the key values we use in calculating a business’s value is that of Seller’s Discretionary Earnings (SDE), which is essentially the total monetary benefit (or equivalent) that an owner receives in the course of one year

50

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Summer 2017

of operations. Typically, most businesses fall within a multiple of 2-3x their SDE. It would be nice if the valuation process was just that easy, however, there’s a lot more to it than just a simple calculation. To get the full picture we need to dig a little deeper (pun intended), and look at numerous other factors:

1) History.

How long has the tree been producing cash, and how much? A consistent and reliable track record obviously bolsters the underlying value. Producing a “bumper crop” one year, won’t have a huge effect if it appears to be an anomaly.

2) Future.

Is there a lifecycle to the tree, and just how advanced is the tree in that cycle? Are there any evident threats that could present a threat down the road (climate change, Pine Beetle outbreak)?

3) Owner involvement.

The same tree under the care of two different gardeners can produce dramatically different results. If the tree requires constant nurturing, and only produces worthwhile output at the hands of a very dutiful professional arborist, it is likely to be worth less than a money tree requiring little attention. If the upkeep of the tree is relatively nominal, and can be done without any special skills, it is much more marketable, and appealing to a buyer.

4) Intrinsic Value.

Beyond providing shade, and pleasant looking foliage, if the tree, for one reason or another, should stop producing cash, what is it worth beyond that? If it is a rare and exotic tree with wood that can be turned into furniture (or lumber for that matter), then there is definitely some inherent value. Alternatively, if what remains of the tree is good for nothing more than firewood, or worse: mulch, then that needs to be factored in as well. If you would like to have a dollar amount assigned to your “money tree”, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the professionals at, Business Finders Canada. For what it’s worth, my recently planted Northwood Maple is thriving, now if it would just start producing some cash!

Robert

LOUIE Tell me what brought you/your family to the Okanagan Valley? My family and I were born here and we are decendents of the First Nation Peoples. Our ancestors are the Okanagan Syilx peoples and we go back thousands of years. The Okanagan Valley is named after our people.

What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment to date? On a personal note, marrying my wife Bernice, who is always there for me.

How long have you been in business? I have several businesses. My first business was in the cattle industry going back to the late 1960’s and my most recent and current business, with my wife Bernice, is Indigenous World Winery. Our wine production facility has been operating for 4 years and our wine tasting facility and Red Fox Club restaurant have been open since May 28, 2016.

On the business side I am divided in my answer. I’m equally proud in helping to bring Westbank First Nation where it is today with self government and all its development; and my work with First Nations throughout Canada with First Nation Land Management and bringing all those communities I’ve worked with into incremental self government and gaining control over their lands and resources.

Describe the growth you’ve witnessed over the past 20 years. I was born at home on the Westbank Indian Reserve in 1951. I have seen a lot of changes. The last 20 years, in particular, have seen accelerated residential and population growth. The dynamics of being a small city are now over.

What plans do you have for the future of your company? There are several business endeavors. Indigenous World Winery (IWW) will involve my family and will be recognized as producing some of the best wines in the world. We already have 22 top awards in the world.

What inspires you? I am inspired by wife, family, my grandmother and parents, great people around me, great wine, a beautiful place to live and a passion to succeed. Nothing stands still in development and if it does, you’re doing something wrong. What does a typical day look like in your life? Hectic! More often than not I am working 7 days a week, and lately at least 50% of the day is business oriented. “You make hay when the sun shines!” Where do you see Kelowna 25 years from now? Kelowna will exceed the growth rate of most cities in Canada. It will be one of the most populated cities in B.C. and will remain one of the most desirable places to live in the world.

Knowing my wife and family are always in support of me down any road I travel makes me feel incredibly blessed!

Indigenous World Spirits distillery will be selling product throughout the world and along with IWW, will be recognized as Indigenous branded. The construction, renewable energy projects and product development plans will be a “wait and see”. I can assure you however, you may be pleasantly surprised in the future. What direction do you see your company heading in over the next few years? On a graph chart, it will be going up in the right direction. Profitability is a strong motive. The Indigenous World concept will evolve into many directions. Any exciting projects in the works? There are many exciting projects in the works. You will not recognize the development changes that will be taking place in the next 5 to 10 years.

What would you say is the key to your success over the years? Hard work, I do what I say. I am surrounded by good people, I have a supportive family and we collectively work as a team.

What would you say are the key components to a successful city? Leadership, community pride, harmonious relationships with neighbouring communities and jurisdictions. What is the driving force behind your business? An overwhelming desire to be successful with the passion to carry it out. My family came from the poorest of poor. Failure is not an option. If you could start over, what would you do differently? That’s hard to say, but given my business

sense, perhaps I should have stepped down as Chief of WFN and gone into private business in a bigger way much sooner.

How would you like to be remembered? Someone who really cared about the community; someone who worked hard to make Indigenous Peoples lives better.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your years in business? Be careful if someone says they can raise money for you. Sometimes it’s better to do it yourself.

For your great, great grandchildren listening to this years from now: Is there any wisdom you’d want to pass on to them? What would you want them to know? Did you and are you walking a straight line? Are you committed in what you are doing in life? I mean, really committed? I will be watching you, hopefully from a better place.

What legacy would you like to leave in the community / the world? My legacy? A man known with determination and perseverance. Tell him “it can’t be done” if he thinks it can be, he will find a way to do it. A trailblazer for Indigenous business entrepreneurs around the world. What’s your favourite project to date? That’s a tough one. They are all favourites. I love the Indigenous World projects, but I think my favourites are yet to come! Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you? My Stemtema (grandmother). She taught me to “walk a straight line and never get side tracked.” I think that’s good advice for anybody.

What are you proudest of? My family and my community. What inspired you to become a Leader? Same answer as the previous one, my family and my community. What motivates you? Knowing there can be a better future. What’s your guilty pleasure? I’ve bought and owned too many cars. I don’t have time to drive them. How has your life been different than what you’d imagined?

Summer 2017

I was born poor, however I knew I wouldn’t let myself and my family remain poor. I’ve been blessed with a B.C. Aboriginal Lifetime Achievement Award but I feel my life’s just getting started. Do you have any regrets? I have no regrets. We finish the interview and you step outside the office and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $100 million. What would you do? It depends on who the lottery ticket belongs to. If I find it and it belongs to someone else, it’s theirs and I would gladly give it to them. It’s not mine. If I legitimately acquired the ticket, I believe I would donate much of it away to those that are poor or in need. I would feel really good about being able to do that. Thank you!

Modern Farmhouse Style Fresh off the Farm with a Twist

R

ecently, the Modern Farmhouse Style has become a sought after look. Its appeal is the comfortable representation of the past, which it evokes. Far from the urban modernism that prevails in the glass and steel monoliths in our big cities, it is perfect for our local warm and sunlit Okanagan Valley homes. It embraces the environment rather than trying to conquer our surroundings. It offers us an escape from all that visual and audible noise of the metropolis, by creating a relaxed look and feel in our homes Farmhouse style brings to mind an old fashioned sense of home where the family gathered around the hearth and the kitchen table, which we now know as the present day kitchen island. Houzz contributor Laura Gakskill describes it as ‘fresh rustic, comfortable modern, heritage with a twist and modern farmhouse style’ is all of these things and more. This easy-to-love style takes the best of the past and updates it.” The important element, which separates it from past rustic and county style, is to use a modern eye for simplicity. Less is more, so you may wish to edit your favorite collections, to showcase your treasures, rather than distracting the eye with too many competing items. It’s ok to mix… old with new, in fact it’s all in the mix, but you will want to minimize mass produced items that you would find in your big box stores, to create your own original story. Try to use authentic materials to give it the room the richness and depth it deserves. Use functional designs such as a hand crafted ceramic pitcher or vase. Canadian designer Viki Mansell remarks that it is a blending of contemporary and rustic style with texture and original artwork to create a fabulous farmhouse retreat. Rural art subjects, painted in soft oils are perfect for this style. They embrace their surroundings adding life to your room, while keeping the look soft.

Antique wood furniture, or what I like to call ‘furniture with a past,’ will tell their own story. Something genuinely old lends gravitas to this interior, this is especially important if you are channeling farmhouse style in a condo or a new modern house. Even one piece can set the stage.

What’s important here is to know that this style is not just a ‘trend look.’ It embraces what we hold near to our hearts and values. In a world with such change and turmoil, why not come home to peace and comfort that enriches your soul. Now go ahead and create your retreat. More key elements will be discussed in our next article. Renovate & Celebrate! W

okanagan dream homes

hile many Okanagan residents acquire their dream homes through the long and laborious process of building new, we are seeing more and more families opting to renovate existing properties to transform a house with good bones into their own personal sanctuary.

photography: Jenn Beal Photography words: Sam Shakura

Often it’s a faster, more affordable process, and while you don’t have the complete freedom of starting from scratch - you do have the ability to dramatically reinvigorate or reimagine a property’s look and feel. This was the case with a West Kelowna home near Shannon Lake that we recently renovated. A young family fell in love with the property’s location and breathtaking backyard, but couldn’t envision moving into the home in its current state - a very dark, moody, masculine and cluttered interior with faux stone covering the walls from floor to ceiling, suffocatingly small, closed-in rooms and orange... yes orange shag carpet. Being the savvy buyers that they were, they called in our professional help before writing an offer to help them access the property, discuss their goals, and determine

if the renovation could be possible within their budget and timeline. It truly does pay to have your favourite designer, remodeler or builder walk through a property with you before purchasing the project. For a small hourly fee - pennies compared to the investment you’re about to make - you can have an educated and thorough discussion of all the pros and cons of the home and its potential before committing. This will always ultimately save you money in the long run, not to mention, ensure you achieve a positive, creative and fabulous result! With limited funds available, knocking down and starting fresh was not an option, but we knew we could lighten, brighten and convert this claustrophobic, wild bachelor’s pad into a lovely, serene and welcoming family home for our client -- and thus the renovation project commenced! Our first step was to open up the main floor’s layout and eliminate the confining feeling of the dark stone surrounding every space. People often forget that they can paint surfaces besides drywall - remember paint is our least expensive, most effective tool - we quite regularly throw a coat of paint on brick or stone if the client wants an updated color or modernized feel without having to spend the big bucks demolishing, repairing and resurfacing the walls. Another perfect example of giving a material new life through paint can be found in how we treated this home’s original golden oak hardwood (which we were pleasantly surprised was hidden underneath the orange shag carpet!). Instead of replacing the hardwood (a costly expense), we opted to refinish and sand the wood back to it’s bare state and re-stain the floor a gorgeous rich, dark chocolate.

There was no saving the kitchen - we needed all brand new appliances and a completely re-designed layout to provide a Summer 2017

better working area and place for the family to sit and enjoy each other’s company. We sourced a hand-painted-esque large scale patterned backsplash that was great bang for buck and broke up the monotony of the stone on all the other walls (remember the essential key to combining patterns is scale, so if you’re going to mix textures or patterns, always ensure they have varying scales or sizes and a continuous theme of color or vibe).

The third and most important key is to be flexible undoubtedly, things will go wrong, unexpected problems will arise, and monies will have to be re-allocated - that is all part of the art and science of renovating but if you can try to enjoy the process and have a little fun along the way (wine helps!) I can guarantee you’ll be even more in love with the home when your finished the strenuous, gruelling, stressful AND super rewarding, fun and gratifying experience!

Before & After!

We installed a waterfall edge granite island which gave the kitchen a luxurious feel and the custom oversized, industrial hood fan created a wow-factor statement piece that grounded the open concept main living area. This property was all about the stunning scenic views of Shannon Lake and the Okanagan skyline so we wanted as much light coming through the windows and unobstructed pathways to grand balconies.

a team who’s portfolio work you love and relate to, and a team with whom you have excellent communication with. The construction process is intimate and lengthy - you want to ensure you’re surrounding yourself with people you like and are inspired by.

When you are renovating - the first imperative step is creating a budget at the very beginning of the project with a clear “total” number that you can spend, and a detailed outline of how and where you will be spending those dollars. The second imperative key is to work with or hire a team you trust,

Africa - Unleash the Awe! by Donna Bennett

It is a place of the soul. The second largest continent, covering about one-fifth of the total land surface of Earth. Africa! The wildlife, the great deserts and the savannah plains; the people ...

Vibrant cultures, friendly people, glittering cities, pristine beaches, and close-up wildlife encounters that will take your breath away, are all waiting for you in Africa. Africa is big! It is the 2nd largest continent in the world, and home to over 1.2 billion people. There are over 54 different countries in this diverse continent. Travelers initially go to see the animals, and they go back because of the people. Africa is a perfect destination for everyone! Baby boomers who want a new adventure are going to Africa while they are still fit and healthy. Some are adding an African Safari onto a cruise itinerary. Millennials who view themselves as global citizens, and want to give back to the world, are heading to Africa. There are 90% fewer rhinos today, then there were in 1973, so the animals need our support. Some populations are in emanate danger of disappearing, and some fortunately are on the road to recovery, thanks to educated people who care. Many travelers are now aware they should disable the GPS on their cell phone and iPad when they take pictures, as poachers use this information to pin point the exact location of animals to harm. Africa is also a perfect destination for multi-generation travel, foodies, romantics (beach and safari honeymoons), and those who want an active holiday. There are world class gourmet and fusion restaurants, wineries, action packed activities, as well as relaxation and wellness options. Different travel options are available for every budget range. You can do a tailormade safari, choose a safari vacation package, or go with a small group for comradery. South Africa stands out as the most diverse country in Africa. There are 11 official languages and many cultural nuances. The famous Cape Winelands offer wine tastings at local estate wineries and excellent cuisine. South Africa has craft markets, art galleries, and many world class spas. In the National Parks, you can see a lot of animals. The rangers can go off road, and get up close when they see a pride of lions for example, so you can have an intimate experience.

Summer 2017

South Africa is perfect for families, as there are hotels and lodges that offer family friendly programs and activities. There are even malaria free private game reserves with lions, elephants, buffalo and rhinos that are perfect for young children and women who may be pregnant. East Africa is an excellent choice for travelers who are interested in culture and wildlife but don’t care about touristy things. It is the perfect choice for people who want to have a traditional safari experience, and perhaps see some primates. “The Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth” happens in Kenya, when over 1 million wildebeest and zebras do their annual migration from the rolling grasslands of the Masai Mara, to the wooded savanna. East Africa is a year- round destination, but you can target the area where most of the animals are at a certain time. The Serengeti in Kenya is ideal between December and June, and the Masai Mara area is ideal between July and November. The Masai Mara has the largest number of lion prides, buffalo, leopards, warthogs, eland, bushbuck, wildebeest and zebra. To feel the emotional impact of seeing silverback gorillas in your mist, you need to travel to Rwanda or Uganda. The Kibale Forest National Park in Uganda has one of the highest concentrations and diversity of primates, including chimpanzees which are endangered. Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest has over ½ of the world’s population of Bwindi mountain gorillas. Seeing a family of mountain gorillas in their own environment, and a mother playing with her babies, is an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime experience. In Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, you can have both a land and water safari experience. The Okavango Delta in Botswana is fed by the Okavango River, and is a jewel in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. Flooding occurs every year between May and July, as the river has no ocean outlet. Imagine seeing little baby hippos and crocodiles nestled in the grass as you canoe beside them. Victoria Falls, a natural wonder of the world, is a must see in Zimbabwe. The Zambezi river becomes the roaring waterfalls called Mosi-ao-Tunya by the locals, which means “Smoke that Thunders.” The South Luangwa National Park is perfect for walking safaris in the lower Zambezi. In Zambia, there are special Sunset game drives, where guides can use a spot light to find cats, leopards, and other nocturnal animals. Namibia is home to the famed Sossusvlei Dunes, the tallest sand dunes in the world, and it is the driest country on earth. The massive shifting sea of sand morphs in colors from red to orange depending on the sun. Himba tribes people have lived in this desert for over 100 years and cover their bodies from head to toe with the red earth mixed with butter. This keeps their skin moisturized, which protects them from the sun, and mosquito bites. The women have very elaborate hair styles, and the Himba people have hardly any wrinkles, and go through their whole life without taking a bath. Even though it is so dry, Namibia has a thriving wildlife population, and the largest concentration of cheetahs, another endangered species. Fish River Canyon in the south

of Namibia, is the largest canyon in Africa, and draws hikers from around the world. There are many details to consider when planning a trip to one of Africa’s amazing countries. You need to know what Visas are required, what currency to bring, what colors of clothing to wear, the baggage allowances on flights, and information about any possible vaccinations and required medications before you travel. Call us, and we will use our 20 years of experience to help you with every detail, so you have an epic soul stirring, seamless experience. We do not charge a fee for our services. Africa is an incredible, life-changing place. Once you have unleashed the awe, you can leave Africa, but Africa will never leave you!

THE CLEAN BEAUTY MOVEMENT A Q&A with Nikki Hunter

With so much new information surfacing about toxic ingredients, animal testing (and other unethical practices) and our desire to be accountable for the environmental impact of our choices….. a movement has begun! What IS clean beauty? When a cosmetic brand has made the commitment to be clean, they chose to be transparent so you can easily see products clean from toxins. Clean of ALL unethical practices, including animal testing, forced labor, human and animal exploitation. Clean for our planet with long term sustainability and waste stream management. How do you know if a brand is clean? Start with reading the ingredients then dig into brand ethics as well as social and eco commitments from their websites and utilizing their customer information hotlines, websites and in-store representatives. If you cannot get the information, let your Spidey-senses tingle! Transparency is a hallmark trait of clean branding. Consider using resources like Environmental Working Group (EWG) Database to investigate individual ingredients until you get more familiar with what ingredients you are choosing to avoid.

How do I know if my products have been tested on animals? Designation as “cruelty-free” or “not tested on animals,” or even the image of a bunny on a label may only refer to the finished product, when in fact, most animal testing occurs at the ingredient level. While a company may claim, “We do not test on animals,” it could still contract other companies to do the testing. The only way to be 100% certain a company is cruelty-free is to buy products from companies that have been certified by the Leaping Bunny Program, which requires that no new animal testing be used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or ingredient suppliers.

5 easy tips to shopping clean 1. Avoid reading bold print on packages telling what’s NOT in it. Read the ingredients to know what IS in it. 2. “Fragrance” isn’t a single ingredient. It legally gets a free pass to hide multiple ingredients while only using one place in the list. 3. Be aware of claims and use of the words Natural, Fragrance/Scent Free, Organic or Hypo-allergenic. These words can be misleading to give customers a false sense of safety. 4. Do your homework before you shop so you know what questions to ask and what brands meet your expectations. 5. Find a clean beauty retailer that offers consultations in store or online.

decreases the amount of plastic that will end up in the landfills (and ocean).

Q&A

What does “green washed” mean? Sadly, many of the words that we look for like Eco, Natural, Organic, Fragrance/Scent free aren’t regulated and many brands are trying to capitalize on the customer shift to cleaner, healthier alternatives without actually committing to it. Brands who choose to green wash their products are choosing to mislead us by creating packaging that implies its contents are natural, non-toxic and safe to use. When a package is covered in images of fruits, veggies, lush greens and plastering it with the words we want to see, we trust that the brand contains these things. Be wary, Remember to look beyond the package and read the ingredients. In addition to this, many of these brands cannot (or will not not) disclose information regarding ingredients sources or product testing and manufacturing practices making it impossible for customers to know if their products are clean and ethical. How do I know which ingredients to avoid? This is a personal decision and depends to how toxin, ethical and eco conscious you wish to be. A great place to start is with “The Dirty Dozen” from the David Suzuki Foundation. This will help you eliminate ingredients that are known carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors. Many of these are also a huge burden on the planet. If you wish to really detox your vanity consider using resources like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Database to investigate individual ingredients to help you get more familiar with what ingredients you prefer to avoid.

Am I going to like how clean makeup performs? Absolutely! There are a few nuances you need to adjust to, like using WAY less product, once you transition you will discover they are lightweight, comfortable and can last through the day just like you are accustomed to.

Can I get the same results from all natural skin care? Absolutely! All natural doesn’t always mean no science! There are many brands that pride themselves on being rich in both. The new conscious customer has created a demand for companies to research and innovate cleaner, high performance products while maintaining strong ethical and sustainable practices.

Are natural and naturally derived the same thing? No. Selectively removing some of the ingredients from a natural source, then altering it biochemically or concentrating it means it is no longer natural. This process changes the properties of the ingredient. In many cases making it unhealthy or we simply don’t know the long-term affects. High fructose corn syrup and trans fats are examples of naturally derived ingredients that we have learned are harmful. How can we manage our cosmetics waste stream better? We all know there is tons of garbage that comes from the cosmetics industry, including after if gets to our hands. Many of the tubes and compacts and jars aren’t included in municipal recycling programs. This means we throw it in the garbage. With the zero-waste movement, some cosmetic companies have made serious commitments to virtually eliminate waste. Refillable and compostable containers. Eliminating all unnecessary packaging. Choosing to make their containers out of glass and sustainable bamboo or recycled plastic. This dramatically

Summer 2017

Tips to reduce you cosmetic waste stream 1. Buy what you will use. Many of us buy skin care programs with the intention of using them, but they end up under the sink. Don’t feel bad, buy what works for your routine. Choose brands that are simple and flexible. 2. Try before you buy! And not on your hand! Choose to shop in full serve environments where experts can sit you down and help you find the right product. 3. Discover brands that have created a waste management program or have eliminated waste. 4. Find your local TerraCycle cosmetics recycle depot. Participating businesses offer plastic cosmetic package recycling. Simply clean out your containers and drop them off. Is clean beauty expensive? Clean beauty has many brand selections with variation in prices, just like the mainstream beauty industry. Shop around! You will be surprised on how affordable it is!

Crystal Hills

Mad Hippie: More Actives. More Results.

Exquisite flowers, beneficial herbs, and high-vibration crystals are synergistically blended to create the Crystal Hills product line. Our goal is simple: to use the healing power of nature to cleanse, soothe, protect, and beautify your skin.

It used to be that you had two choices when it came to skin care: Choose a traditional brand with sophisticated anti-aging actives, but run the risk of exposing your body to harmful synthetic additives, or choose a natural skin care line that while safe, did little more than hydrate the skin. HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY REDUCE SYMPTOMS OF AGING Q&A with Nurse Lauren Nurse Lauren Woychuk, who started W180MD along with her husband Dr. Wesley Woychuk, answers some commonly asked questions regarding the increasingly popular hormone replacement therapy.

What is hormone replacement therapy? Hormone replacement therapy replaces hormones that naturally begin to decrease as we age, aiming to slow down or decrease symptoms of aging.

How does it work to reduce signs of aging? As we age, certain hormone levels begin to drop which causes our bodies to fail at carrying out processes that keep us looking and feeling healthy. We start to experience aches and pains, digestive issues, fatigue, menopausal symptoms, or diminished libido. We see our skin weathering and notice excess fat in areas that were once lean. Increased muscle mass is one of the key reasons that hormone replacement therapy makes us feel so much healthier - because a higher muscle mass is known to help our body function more efficiently, remove unneeded storage of excess fat, and place less stress on our joints.

When will I start seeing results, and how long does the therapy last? It typically takes between 2 and 4 weeks to start feeling and seeing results. The recommended length of therapy varies, but if the patient is feeling great then it is not uncommon for patients to request to stay on hormone replacement therapy for years.

Is it safe? Hormone replacement therapy is completely safe. As with any treatment, there are risks, but they are minimal and any concerns will be discussed during the consultation.

FASTBRACES® - A LOT CAN HAPPEN IN ABOUT 120 DAYS! Time is a luxury for both the patient & the doctor. The unattainable luxury of measuring time in days in orthodontics is now becoming a reality. Introducing FASTBRACES®, a technology celebrating its quarter-of-a-century anniversary of providing products that help dentists and orthodontists straighten teeth. This high performance bracket systems upright the roots of the teeth from the beginning of treatment with just one square wire by torquing and tipping them from the very first appointment.

Thousands of consecutively treated patients and university research have shown that FASTBRACES® are not only safe but offer many additional benefits. Patients oftentimes experience less discomfort and there are no more risks with FASTBRACES® than those associated with traditional braces.

The treatment with FASTBRACES® Technology improves the patient’s lifestyle because treatment typically takes just a few visits at the doctor’s office. Less doctor visits mean less money spent, less gas used getting to and from the doctor’s office and less time off school or work.

Additionally, the fact that the braces are on for less time means that there is possibly less chance of tooth decay due to improper oral hygiene.

Dr. Don MacRae is a Master Affiliate of FASTBRACES® - So give us a call to see what FASTBRACES® is all about!

MD Codes™ – The New Approach to Facial Aesthetic Medicine Stop chasing the lines & start chasing a feeling: The new way of treating lines & wrinkles that zeros in on feelings first.

Recently I’ve been invited to several medical conferences and training seminars presented by Dr. Mauricio de Maio (in London, England, Toronto, Cancun etc). Given this new approach, myself and many leading-edge aesthetic physicians are taking another look at how we treat the signs of aging. Dr. de Maio, an internationally respected facial aesthetics expert, has pioneered an innovative way of treating facial lines – called the MD Codes™ – that focuses on the full face and on how patients want to feel, versus simply targeting lines. The MD Codes help cosmetic physicians recognize how areas of the face are directly linked to certain emotional attributes, and identify the right treatment points and techniques that will deliver effective and natural-looking results by focusing on how people want to feel post-treatment. We see a lot of patients focus on specific wrinkles, folds or facial lines – but what is their face saying about them and how do they feel? What do they really want to convey when they see themselves out and about, as other people see them? For example, a patient may say want to reduce their forehead frown lines – yet with more conversation and examination, together the holistic solution is to look less tired and less sad.

simply treating wrinkles to treating the face holistically and respectfully, and to deliver the best possible results that are consistently natural-looking. How do MD Codes™ help leading aesthetic practitioners offer the best treatment? The MD Codes: •

Show a series of strategic and formulated injection points, which help practitioners deliver natural looking and subtle results

Demonstrate how areas of the face are indirectly improved by their neighbouring areas – why it is essential to treat the face ‘as a whole’

Allow practitioners to show patients the strategy behind their treatment and what will be achieved by injecting in specific areas

They highlight ‘alert areas’ in red (e.g. facial arteries where it might be dangerous to inject)

Show what devices and techniques should be used at each injection point, particularly of interest near an ‘alert area’. For example, should a needle or cannula be used, and should injection be delivered through a linear or fanning technique.

Good cosmetic physicians need to be more than just injectors of Botox and dermal fillers (like Juvederm). They need to be experts. The MD Codes were developed as a new language in facial aesthetics to help physicians accurately read the messages of the face and develop the best possible treatment. The MD Codes system helps focus on results, so that a patient’s treatment is based on their individual goals, for example to look: Younger Happier Slimmer More attractive More feminine Less saggy Less tired Less sad Since everyone’s face and motivation for treatment are unique, the treatment approach should be adjusted to each person’s needs and emotional desires. We are looking at the full picture and helping our patients focus on how they want to feel from treatment versus focusing on bothersome lines and folds in isolation. Taking this approach leads to higher patient satisfaction. An MD Codes™ physician and clinic provides a comprehensive approach to assessing and treating patients. It is the next step in the movement away from

the tasting note

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

Oh yes, summer is finally here and that means summer wines are on the menu. As the weather begins to heat up, it’s time to start enjoying fresh, lively, easy-to-drink wines. The “Summer Sippers.” Gone are the heavy red, what we are looking for are refreshing sparkling wines, whites, a good rosé. The fresher and the lighter the better. Properly chilled, maybe even on ice. And we can find all of this right here in the Okanagan. So come and join us on our quest to find the freshest, juiciest summer sippers. How about ...

2015 TOWNSHIP 7 MUSCAT

2015 HESTER CREEK ROSE CABERNET FRANC

“A fruit salad in a glass” this Muscat is a perfect wine for the summer months. It displays classic aromas of orange blossom and ginger. The palate was fermented to a dry Alsacian style with notes of orange peel and stone fruit. The finish is crisp and refreshing.

Another perfect wine for a long Okanagan summer. The Cabernet Franc rosé varietal has a reputation for producing some of the world’s finest rosé wines, many of which come from the Loire Valley of France, but this Okanagan version is a strong competitor. The 2014 season had warmer-than-average temperatures, minimal rainfall and no early- or late-season frost - ideal growing conditions for the Cabernet Franc grapes.

The 2015 is an amazing example for this varietal as the 2014 growing season in the Okanagan Valley was fantastic, resulting in a charming wine with a pure, floral sort of grapiness, with hints of fresh Okanagan peaches and apricots.

This rich rosé is complete with flavours of fresh rhubarb, strawberry and a hint of candied fruit. Best enjoyed on a patio with friends, the off-dry summer-sipper pairs well with a plate of local charcuterie, blue cheese and a selection of olives.

Lovely as an apéritif, it also works well with spicy Asian dishes, particularly Thai cuisine. $17.97 Alc./Vol.: 12.5% www.township7.com

2015 GRAY MONK ODYSSEY ROSE BRUT

This rosé is a blend of Pinot Meunier and the traditional grape, Pinot Noir, and was made in the classic sparkling wine method to retain the fruitiness of the grape varieties. The wine displays fresh melon and berry flavours followed by a smooth creamy palate and crisp finish. (Yes, it is a 2012 bottle - the 2015 bottle didn’t arrive in time, which is why we used the 2012 our editor had in his wine cellar ... we truly enjoyed it!)

This Chardonnay is a blend of three micro-harvests from their single estate Chardonnay block. A nose full of fresh fruit, particularly citrus and stone fruit, with notes of butter, brioche and sea salt, the resulting wine is an elegant balance of toasted oak, fresh fruit and minerality, with zesty bright acidity. An ideal patio wine. Hurry to get the 2015, or opt for the equally amazing 2016 Chardonnay.

2015 PAINTED ROCK CHARDONNAY

Many of us like a Sauvignon Blanc as a summertime favorite, a white wine that is extremely food friendly, particularly with the fresh and light summer meals. Th Evolve Sauvignon Blanc is an excellent patio wine at a very compelling price. Tropical fruits with lime and nectarine. Bright, lively citrus and summer fruit flavours of melon, nectarine, and pear. Pairs well with Okanagan goat cheese at your picnic, or afternoons under a shade tree with a really good book. Evolve Cellars might be a winery you haven’t heard of before. It was launched in 2015 by BC wine ambassador Harry McWatters’ daughter, Christa-Lee McWatters-Bond, and is situated in Summerland, BC surrounded by vineyards with a spectacular view across Okanagan Lake. $15.99 Alc./Vol.: 13.9%

the last word...

What We Love About The Okanagan

1

Kelowna City Park: As a family, our number one favourite thing is to park at City Park and follow the boardwalk - we run and the kids bike - to the bird sanctuary. We look at turtles, and in the summer you can watch the people flyboarding on the lake. Afterwards the kids play in City Park.

2 3

Cedar Creek and Mission Hill Music Series: You can’t do better no a hot summer day than going to Cedar Creek or Mission Hill and having a great glass of wine while listening to Blue Rodeo or Chantal Kreviazuk.

Mission Creek Walkway: I love running on the Mission Creek Walkway. It’s beautiful, and you can see beavers, wildlife... there’s even a heron rookery if you go far enough.

4

Kolu: I was asked to speak at a Masterclass in Phlebology (the study of veins and vein disease) at the Sorbonne in Paris, and I loved the shopping there. Kolu in Kelowna really reminds me of the stores I found there.

5 6

The Fixx Cafe and Pasta Bar: This is right across from our office and I love running across for lunch. Lisa Cham, the owner, is really innovative, and tries to keep everything local, which I really like.

ICON OKANAGAN

Waterfront Wines: I really like the local flavour they incorporate. They have an excellent chef, and there is lots of variety on the menu. It’s great value and excellent quality.

9

Quail’s Gate: The restaurant - Old Vines has a world class view and world class view. They also try to be local in their produce, which is something I really appreciate.

10

French Immersion: I was offered the opportunity at the Sorbonne because I studied in a French Immersion program when I was in school here in Kelowna. A.S Matheson Elementary, at the time, had a great French immersion program, and now my kids are in French Immersion at . I also have about half French patients, so I always try and talk to them only in French.

7

Bear Creek and Rose Valley Hiking Trails: We love to hike, so these two locations are some of our favourites. There are trails in Rose Valley where you absolutely feel you are not in the city anymore.

Insider information is everything! This issue we speak to Dr. Janna Bentley, Medical Director of Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic about some of her favourite things in the Okanagan.

Sparkling Hill Resort and Spa: This is the best spa resort experience in the Valley. Staying there is an amazing experience, especially if you get a lakeside room. The spa is also lovely; I’ve had both the hot stone and the regular massage and both were wonderful.

11

Blonde: This is another great store. It’s a younger customer, but they always have fresh and quality clothes. Shout out to Raegan Hall, the owner.

12

Fintry Falls: The waterfall is beautiful. You go up a wooden staircase through the forested canyon, with spectacular views of three waterfalls and deep pools We used to live in the Fintry area and it’s a neat little community. They also have Fintry Estate, a museum that tells the history of Captain James Dun-Waters, the ‘Laird of Fintry’.

ALWAYS BUY DIRECT

All vehicles are always clearly priced on the lot as well as on their website. One of the things Kot has expressed as a key to their success is that, “Customers want transparency when they come to a used dealership. The bottom line is that they want selection and the best prices. We pride ourselves in being able to deliver both every time.”

Buy Direct Truck Centre, a division of Kelowna Hyundai, opened its doors in September 2012 selling quality used trucks. Since then, the inventory at Buy Direct Truck Centre has increased to include domestic and import used cars and suvs. Now with an inventory of over 100 vehicles always in stock, Buy Direct Truck Centre has become the Okanagan’s largest used truck, car and SUV dealership.

Buy Direct started in September 2012 and has become the largest used car operation in the Okanagan with over 250 used vehicles on display. In concert with Kelowna Hyundai, Buy Direct donated $100,000 towards the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre in 2015 and they have a yearly campaign to continue to raise more money for them to buy additional medical equipment. Kot says, “Giving back to the community we live in, and to the residents who have supported us, is important to everyone on the team and something we feel very proud about.” Their passion for providing the best customer experience and quality used vehicles, makes Buy Direct Truck Centre an essential stop when looking for your next vehicle. They are located at 1638 Cary Road and can be reached by phone at 778- 448-7057, or online at www.buydirecttruyckcentre.com .

Buy Direct Truck Centre, continues to exceed expectations and achieve impressive sales numbers. So far in 2016 they have sold over 500 used retail trucks / vans /cars. As well, the Wholesale Direct Division specializes in vehicles at affordable pricing - $7000 or under – has sold over 800 vehicles already this year. President John Kot says, “We found the used car market lacking in the Okanagan area and Buy Direct has filled a significant void. We are very excited to satisfy this need and intend to continue to provide great service to our customers.” Buy Direct started in September 2012 as mainly a truck store but in mid2013 their inventory grew to include commercial models, cars, vans, and sport utility vehicles. They now have over 250 used vehicles on display. The dealership has become the largest used car operation in the Okanagan, and the team includes three salesmen and two wholesale salesmen. Buy Direct have their own full detail shop, too. In addition, full financing options with over ten different banks and Buy Direct’s own in-house financing program are available. They have two finance managers helping people with good, bad, or even no credit at all. So no matter what your credit report says, Buy Direct Truck Centre will help you drive away in your next truck, SUV, or car!
