PUBLISHER’S LETTER An Eventful Summer!

Yes, it sure was. We could fill a whole magazine with all the amazing events, and quite often we had to make decisions which one to visit with several taking place on the same day. And yes, we admit, we enjoyed it and had a lot of fun and can only hope that you had an amazing time as well. If you like cars you must have been very busy covering all the great car shows, from the Peachland World of Wheels, to the Father’s Day Car Show in Kelowna or the Penticton Peach City Beach Cruise. You love music? Well, with Martina McBride at Mission Hill Winery, Emerson Drive and Tom Cochrane at Cedar Creek Winery, Andrew Olaf Robrecht Allen at Ex Nihilo and so many others there was plenty to choose from. Terry Armstrong Or how about all the food and wine festivals? The annual Feast of Fields at Meadow Vista Artisan Farm Winery, the K-Town Showdown, or the Naramata Bench Tailgate Party ... again, too many to list. And if you follow us on social media you already know that we were invited to co-pilot the brand-new Vector Martini Rosso V40R before it left for England (competing in and winning both races in one of the toughest powerboat races in the world!). Or our meeting with Heidi Hetzer, the 78 year old lady circumnavigating the globe in a vintage car. Not to forget our iconic wine tour in a Ferrari and with a helicopter. And, and, and ... You can’t beat a summer in the Okanagan! But hey, Fall and Winter are equally amazing, so let’s enjoy! See you around!

Cedar Creek Winery, Kelowna August 26 & 27, 2015 Two consecutive sold-out performances by the pride of Lynn Lake, Manitoba’s Tom Cochrane were held in the beautiful rose gardens and Vineyard Pavilion at Cedar Creek Estate Winery. Though the audience didn’t have the usual view of a sunset over the lake the first night, smoke from nearby forest fires cleared on the second night, a welcome change for 420 appreciative music lovers. This was the last of the talent for the Telus Sunset Concert Series in 2015. Tom Cochrane, who has won eight Juno awards, is an officer of the Order of Canada, Grammy nominee and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee, brought along his band Red Rider for an intimate acoustic performance.

The Gentleman

by Dr. Christian Brix

They should have taught you this in school....

HOW TO LOSE YOUR DREAM GIRL ...

W

ell, you did it, you found a way to attract the girl of your dreams, and you couldn’t feel any luckier. You may be one of the few who have had that amazing fortune, and I can say from experience that there is no greater joy than looking over at the girl you love and recognizing that she is, in your eyes, perfectly perfect for you. Now is your chance to either take that love and care for it like Mr. Miyagi does his bonsai tree, or completely let it slip away. To lose the girl of your dreams, just follow this guide:

there is nothing worse than that. Also...no crying. Ever. Let’s just call it what it is, an argument; you are pretty much always right anyway. So what is the point of letting her talk too much? Her beautiful little spirit that gets pushed down a little bit more with each argument needs to stay down to avoid pain for you in the future. When she walks into the room, dressed so well she takes your breath away, even if it seems like she doesn’t care, she wants you to notice how gorgeous she looks, and she wants to hear you tell her. Don’t do it! It’s better to just notice quietly and tell her that you are now going to be late because it took her so long to get ready.

If you truly love her, make sure you don’t tell her too often. Don’t ever just grab her around the waist while she is busy doing something else and tell her that you feel so lucky to have “Never hold her her in your life. It will seem too clingy head in your anyway. Forget to choose her every single day. Wake up in the morning, say good morning, and get in the shower. She probably doesn’t want a kiss or cuddle anyway... morning breath, right??

hands and look her in the eyes to tell her she is the best thing to ever happen in your life.”

Freedom...too much freedom is a bad thing. Make sure you keep tabs on her, her friends, and the people she works with. You can never be too careful. There is a great chance someone is dying to steal her away from you, so make sure she knows how jealous and insecure you are.

If you might be smarter or more successful financially, it is important for her to be reminded of that whenever possible. She might not want to feel like you love her as she is, and that what she brings to the relationship is 10 times more valuable than all your books and money. DON’T LISTEN to too much of what she says. Your dream girl might find it annoying when you really hear what she needs to be happy, and there is nothing worse than remembering the little seemingly meaningless things that bring a smile to her face. It is always important to remain as mysterious as possible. If you share your fears and your real feelings with her, it will just be ammunition for her to use against you later. More importantly, you will look like a huge wuss, and

FALL 2015

When she is in pain, whether it is something really big, or just a bad day at work, the best thing to do is try to solve her problem as quickly as possible. She has friends if she just wants to “vent.” The problem needs to be fixed, and her pain needs to be seen as “silly” and “dramatic.”

If you don’t take any other piece of advice, and you are committed to losing this girl, at least take this one with you: never hold her head in your hands and look her in the eyes to tell her she is the best thing to ever happen in your life. It’s just too intense and seems a bit needy. Gratitude is too attractive, and she will never leave if she knows how lucky you feel. Shakespeare said “the course of true love never did run smooth.” The truth is that even with your dream girl at your side, you and she will still make mistakes, and you will still have pain. That IS love. It’s the ups and downs that give love life! What matters is who you want to be for her. We want to be a man who knows who he is, what he wants, and that he is a true catch. But at the exact same time we have to be the man who is humbled and completely grateful that this amazing and perfect girl chose him. The man who doesn’t know why she chose him, and he is perfectly happy to not ever ask. The Lady

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

KEEP CALM, IT’S JUST THIRTY ...

L

et’s be honest, older women constantly tell us that their thirties were their best years; and until you hit that “A-HA” moment when you look in the mirror and finally feel complete acceptance for who you are, it doesn’t make sense.

IKEA We’ll do it if we have to, but assembling an end table until midnight with mediocre instructions is no longer a thrilling task... and when did the hot dogs go from 49 cents to 75 cents anyway?

Then that day comes… and all of a sudden a few of these realities are endearing and not at all daunting…

Skirt Length There is that ghastly moment when you look in the mirror and wonder if your skirt is too short for your age? Mandatory panty hose are next – I think.

14 Things A Woman Realizes At Thirty: Kool Aid Gone are the days of KoolAid mustaches… the only KoolAid we drink at the age of thirty is the company kind. Spanx It really doesn’t matter how much junk you have in your trunk, every woman, no matter what size... needs a good pair. Wings These are no longer just a staple appetizer. Wings are when you clap your hands and realize your arm jiggles are clapping to their own beat. No worries, this happens to the best of us. PJs It not only becomes acceptable to spend Friday nights in your flannel pjs, it becomes something we look forward to all week!

Cosmo Mag Standing in line at the grocery store, when you read: “18 Ways to Make Him Want You”... You already know them all, tried them all... Forget it, now “18 Ways to burn belly fat” grabs you.

“Your twenties were about exploring whites, thirties you learn to sip and savour a glass of red wine (sometimes a bottle) … ”

Red Wine Your twenties were about exploring whites, thirties you learn to sip and savour a glass of red wine (sometimes a bottle)… Mom Calls She’s on speed dial. Still over-bearing and always has an opinion… but, we actually value her opinion today more than ever before. And she’ll still gladly make soup when we’re sick.

Small Appliances When grandma gifted you a new electronic mixer at twenty-two, you wondered “when am I ever going to use this?”... And at thirty, not only do you use the mixer regularly, but fingers crossed that this Christmas she gets you a new blender!

Brand Loyalty We’ve settled into knowing our favourite brand of mascara, selected a signature scent (that better not get discontinued!) and have a particular brand of shoes that fits our feet perfectly – Yes, gentlemen, we really do need that second pair… Quality Beats Quantity Having acquaintances is good. Having a couple of best girlfriends is priceless. Now go put on your pajamas, pour a glass of red wine, and call your mom because it’s all good ladies;)

Facebook Forget parties and self-indulging selfies, our Facebook uploads suddenly become more about food and kids – regardless of if they are ours or not. The Mall It used to be a place to hang out with friends. Now when we go to the mall we have a purpose… (even if it is just to collect a few more steps on our FitBit).

I am Spirit The Music of Chris Thompson It was fitting Chris Thompson popped seven corks on seven bottles in celebration of his latest album. After all, it has been seven years in the making. ICON caught up with the 34-year-old Kelowna-based musician shortly after he put his solo record ‘and himself’ to bed for some much-needed rest. “I know something great is going to happen,” Thompson says. Utilizing his producer (Danny McBride’s) influence and contacts Chris as been heard by and currently in negotiations with major labels ready to promote and distribute the record. It doesn’t have a name yet, but Thompson gushes about the work he’s collected with a roster of notable names from the Canadian music industry. The record was finished earlier this year under the watchful eye and “ears” of accomplished Canadian producer Danny McBride. McBride a two-time (CBS recording artist) also co-wrote the songs with Thompson. McBride says, “A few years ago, Chris came to me with some very solid ideas and I used the (unfinished

katchewan city for getting pulled on stage by Green Day in 1998 as a teen. From there, he formed a popular local band called The Mother Culture that released three independent albums. So, close, yet... Instead, he continued working or attending school. Then, one summer in northern Saskatchewan working at a fishing camp, the stars aligned again. A chance meeting with music lovers from Texas changed his path. Along with other staffers who could play music, Thompson was entertaining clients with his prowess on the guitar. After it was all over, some TV producers there to film a fishing show approached him with an offer he didn’t think was real. They said he was better than most in Texas. They invited him down south where he wrote more music, kicked around with more famous musicians hoping for that big break. It never did materialize and more reliable work in Canada beckoned him home — for a while.

i am spirit material) as a foundation to enable me to contribute as a ghost writer lyrically, and a surgeon with regard to song structure, arrangements and melodies. I love working with Chris” says McBride “the cat’s just got so much heart, we laughed, we cried and emotions always ran high, but at the end of each day we were always amazed with our accomplishments, that’s why I’m confident the music world will embrace Thompson’s record like a long-lost lover.” Thompson spends time in the Okanagan when he’s not playing guitar or working in the Alberta oil patch as a petroleum geologist, because his forays into the music business have been all about false starts or unfinished business. The country-folk-rock-roots musician is quick to admit he’s been kicking around the industry since he was a teenager, but this time he’s confident that his transition into a full-time music career awaits him. This album, he says, is going to be different. “There’s not a definable genre,” he said. “It has everything from U2 to the Eagles to folk-roots.” Thompson is a Saskatoon boy with a fair share of accomplishments to his credit. He was famous in the Sas-

After relocating to the Okanagan, he won Country Rock Idol in Kelowna and played the Merrit country music festival. Yet, Chris wasn’t able to crack that mysterious barrier that separates so many talented musicians in this world from widespread success. It wasn’t till he found McBride that the pieces started to fall in place, the songs started taking shape and great studio musicians suddenly became available, (Bryan Adams’ drummer) Pat Steward, (Wynton Marsali’s bassist) Sean Drabbit, (Barney Bentall’s Steel player) John Ellis, (CCMA award winner) Raquel Cole (b-ground vocals), Alan Doyle (keyboards) Darryl Havers,)…The album was mixed by Chris, Danny and Adam Witke (studio owner and engineer), even McBride’s old friend (RUSH ) producer Terry Brown offered to mix a song. “We’ve got ourselves one hell of a record” McBride says, and he should know with a career that’s spanned more than four and a half decades, touring with legends like U2, Supertramp, Joe Cocker and Chris de Burgh. McBride says, “I thought I’d done it all, but quite honestly I’m prouder of the work we’ve done on this project than any of my past achievements or successes, I can’t wait for the rest of the world to discover Chris Thompson.”

must read | books THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB By David Lagercrantz

The Girl in the Spider’s Web is the fourth installment in the Millennium series of novels (selling more than 80 million books), focusing on the characters of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. Written not by their creator, Stieg Larsson (who died of a heart attack at the age of 50 in 2004), but by a Swedish journalist and author named David Lagercrantz, the duo join forces again in this adrenaline-charged, uniquely of-the-moment thriller. Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker—a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the centre of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it . . . ? ?

WHO WILL BUY

by John-Erik Grain

? MY BUSINESS ?

How do you intend to exit your business? Who buys your business has a huge impact on your personal and professional reputation. Is this a legitimate concern when planning your business sale? The short answer is “YES”. “I need to sell my business, but, I’ve got too much invested to sell to just anyone”. These are words we hear on a daily basis at our brokerage. Handing over your business legacy and watching it crumble to the ground and/ or having your reputation tarnished is not an option and your graceful exit needs to be thoroughly thought out. The buyer of your business must be “the right fit.” Out of the five factors that determine a BUYER’s qualification:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Relevant Experience Liquid Capital Source of Liquid Capital Credit Standing Motivation

The declining loonie has been a convenient crutch for exports and our sustaining GDP; however, the average Canuck suffers with reduced buying power. We’re in real trouble as an economy if it bounces back substantially any time soon, but, on the flip side, we’re looking very attractive as a feasting ground for foreign investments. If you’re getting all twisted up reading this, it’s a good thing. Here’s one solution you may give a lot more thought to when considering a buyer for your business.

Let’s consider some recent facts; Canada’s economic recovery has relied excessively on debt-fueled consumer spending and housing investment crushing many Canadians dreams of purchasing their own business. Throw in the disgustingly low (and still declining) natural resource prices and we all need to rethink our strategy; not just as a business owner, but as individuals and as a country. Sure the writing was on the “wall”, but, these days I think too many of us are focusing on our Facebook “wall” a little too much to notice.

Nearly 250,000 international migrants arrive in Canada each year. Applications for landed immigrants have increased exponentially recently considering the global political and economic arenas. Increasingly more are destined for the out-performing Western Canadian marketplace. These business buyers are educated, have healthy bank balances, and have a great business plan. Our economic existence relies on this surge of foreign investment and future tax payers. These families can be a great fit for your business and our increasingly diverse communities. They are extremely motivated to live and work in the best country in the world and as a motivated business owner or seller, you need to consider these facts when sifting through your list of buyers.

In 4 months from now there will be more Canadians over 65 than there are under 14. As people live longer, the percentage of non-participants in the labour force is growing. BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan are experiencing unprecedented

skilled labour shortages and businesses are feeling the increasing costs to keep employees. Additionally, there will be crippling pressure on the health care system, pension plans and other social spending programs that will need to be bolstered by the business owner and tax payer. Your business vitality will depend on a cost conscious owner/operator that knows how to innovate and lead the industry.

tracting immigrant buyers for your business. There are many others. Your business broker is very familiar with these processes from introduction and translation, right through to closing the deal. If you are considering selling your business, contact a certified business broker that can find “the right buyer” for your business. Don’t gamble away your business legacy; sell for top dollar to the right buyer.

business profile most up-to-date technology on the market, carefully selecting only the equipment that has been proven to work. The clinic recently acquired a new InMode device, and clinic staff received InMode training from one of Beverly Hills’ top nurse trainers. “We just had a nurse trainer up here from the 90210 ZIP code,” Dr. Bentley says. “She uses this machine on Britney Spears, Simon Cowell, and McSteamy. So now, we can offer the same treatments that the celebs get.” Dr. Bentley and the team at Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics work hard to provide patients with safe treatments, which is why all of their services are physician-led. A lot of medi-spas will offer aesthetic treatments, Dr. Bentley says, but what makes Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics different is that there’s always a physician available to monitor treatments and ensure patient safety.

akeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic Delivers Effective Treatment for Vein & Skin Conditions Through Proven Science, CuttingEdge Technology

Local clinic strives to give patients a natural, refreshed look that they can love. Dr. Janna Bentley, a 10-year veteran of the vein and skin treatment industry, is one of the Okanagan’s foremost experts on skin-related and venous conditions. As the VP of Education for the Canadian Society of Phlebology and a faculty member with the UBCO dermatology program, she’s well versed in modern vein and skin treatments – and long has been. She wrote a textbook chapter on dermal fillers (artificial injected compounds that replace lost fat and restore face structure) while in med school, and her practice – the Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic – is one of only a few nonsurgical cosmetic centers in BC that offers surgical procedures for varicose veins. And the one thing that has propelled her throughout her career is a strong focus on getting safe, positive results for patients. “I love being able to make people’s lives better,” she says. “I want my patients to look natural – I want them to look refreshed.” The Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic prides itself on offering the

“I think people would be surprised to know that we do a lot of medical work, given our target market is cosmetic patients,” she says. “Not many people know that we treat hyperhidrosis and do biopsies and excisions.” The Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic receives over 1000 referrals every month from general practitioners all around the province, with much of their patient traffic coming to them for pre-cancer skin treatments. Dr. Bentley will be speaking at the Canadian Society of Phlebology’s 40th biannual congress in Montreal in October. Her panel will address the topic of clinical exams and the importance of proper diagnoses. But for Dr. Bentley and the staff at the Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic, the job isn’t about the cool tech toys or the lively conferences. It’s about improving patients’ lives. “My work is very satisfying,” Dr. Bentley says. “Our patients really care about their well being. They’re generally healthy, and they want to stay fit. I can do something about my patients’ problems. I can make people’s lives better.” Patients with varicose veins or skin concerns can schedule a consultation by phone or online.

To Jiggle or Not to Jiggle That is the question!

When I was 17, and living in Argentina, I was out on the farm and my host mother asked if I wanted to go horseback riding. Great idea, until I ended up galloping across the pampas (not my choice). The horse decided to abruptly turn around and gallop back to its stall for dinner. The next couple of days, I was acutely aware of why I should have worn a sports bra. Here is the funny part, many women put up with acute discomfort while exercising, and we have to ask the question, “why?” We all agree that staying active and exercising is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and when women choose to make time for themselves to exercise, we rejoice. It is just a shame that moderate to intense exercise can be so hard on unsupported breasts. According to bra fit expert Ali Cudby, whether you have a little or a lot, repetitive motion can increase the rate of damage to delicate breast tissue, causing sagging and stretch marks. Not to mention, it is the pain that sometimes stops women from continuing with the exercise that they enjoy. The great news is that there are now several sports-bra options available specifically designed for bigger-breasted women. ... extra space after “impact.” ... The simple rule of sports bras is: the higher the impact (running, horseback riding, jumping), the firmer compression you need to stop the jibble, wobble and bouncing. If you are participating in moderate impact activities (power walking, cycling, golf) a sports bra is still important, you just don’t need as much compression. A good sports bra will also support your posture while exercising. Please do not do high impact activity in your old stretched out, worn out bra. If the bra doesn’t provide proper support on a regular day - it is certainly not going to support during exercise. Also, if you are one of those women who are going to invest in “good bras” once they lose some weight... honour the body you have now! You are worthy of great bras everyday - love your body now and you will be amazed at how it responds. Bottom line: Make sure your breasts aren’t working out harder than the rest of your body - a good sports bra will lift your spirits.

Mod Salon Inc.

The Leading Edge of Fashion

Mod Salon Inc. is driven by love; the love of hair, style, and their clients & staff. With continuing education, creative photoshoots and team building seminars — the team at Mod Salon is always planning for the future. This translates to constant improvements and growth to their client service program. Mod Salon’s conception was born over 10 years ago. It has evolved from a small downtown boutique salon to the premier salon in Kelowna. With the success they achieved in the beloved downtown location, came the opportunity to create a bigger space in the Mission and capture Tabatha’s vision in its entirety. From the moment a client walks in the door, a one of a kind experience begins for them. Not only did her image take fruition, the salon has quickly become one of the busiest salons in the city. The team that works with Tabatha are hand-picked for their versatile skills and strong passion for creativity. The addition of an aesthetics room has made the salon a full-service stop for men and women looking to pamper themselves for a day.

Mod Salon takes the well-being of people and our planet very seriously. Their focus on being a Green Circle salon means that 90% of all products used are recycled — including hair trimmings. The trimmings are used to make natural oil booms and assist in the clean up of oil spills. As well, using ammonia-free products is great for the consumer and environment. Davines, Oribe, & Phytomer are considered some of the top products in the world. At Mod Salon the products are vegan, sulphate & paraben free. They only use the purest of ingredients. Each stylist/aesthetician is trained to know what product will be compatible with different hair & skin types. Mod Salon Inc. is setting a new standard in beauty and they would love for you to come and experience what Mod Salon is all about.

Restore Vein & Skin Centre, is excited to receive patients in their beautiful new clinic located in the Capri Mall, with an anticipated opening date of November 1, 2015. The doctors and staff are presently treating patients at their temporary location in Capri Mall until the new clinic on the second floor is complete. Dr. Mandy Wong will be joined by Dr. Henry Docherty, Dr. Harpreet Lotay and Dr. John Mah, along with advanced nurse injectors Laurie Chapman and Kathryn Woodcock, experienced laser services providers Gwen Osness and Kelly Priest, Coolsculpting technicians Carrie Lust and Karen Tostenson. These staff members, as well as clinic manager Lynda Burns RN and support staff have worked alongside Dr. Wong for many years and bring a breadth of knowledge and expertise to the new clinic.

Dr. Mandy Wong

Dr. Wong has been involved in the medical and cosmetic treatment of skin and veins for the past 15 years. She has obtained her Diploma in Practical Dermatology from the University of Cardiff and her Masters in the field of Skin Cancer from the University of Queensland. She is actively involved in the practice of phlebology (disease of the veins) and sits on the board of directors of the Canadian Society of Phlebology. She has written a chapter in a recent textbook on treatment of varicose veins and several scientific papers. She is frequently invited to speak at provincial and national meetings, educating doctors on skin cancer and treatment of varicose veins. She is an associate

clinical professor for the UBC Southern Medical Program and is involved in teaching medical students as they go through their dermatology rotation. Restore Vein & Skin Centre’s primary focus is to treat patients with the highest clinical standards, with the newest technology and innovative procedures. Dr. Wong is certified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC to provide endovenous laser procedures. This minimally invasive procedure eliminates the need for traditional surgical stripping of varicose veins. The clinic has the most advanced mole mapping system in the province to help diagnose malignant melanoma at an early, curable stage. The clinic’s four doctors have undergone specialized training in the clinical detection of skin cancer and sclerotherapy to treat varicose veins. Medically necessary treatments are covered by MSP. Cosmetic treatments performed at the clinic utilize state of the art technologies and injection techniques with safety and patient satisfaction as top priorities. “Our goal is treat our patients in a way that their friends and family think they look better rested and healthier, but can’t pinpoint why”, says Dr. Wong. So, any development came to a standstill, real estate came to a standstill, you know, we sold very few, I think there was one real estate sale in 2009/2010, so the biggest challenge coming on board is trying to revitalize and get that momentum back. RM: What would be the #1 advantage that your hill has worldwide? PP: There are a couple of advantages. One that we saw last year which was snow, it was a bad snow season all throughout North America and actually in the last two years, it was even kind of tough. Both seasons weren’t that great of seasons but compared to other resorts we still had a very good snow base, so snow is hugely an advantage. The other thing that we do have, I believe we have a true goal to bring the family into skiing. Not just aiming for the high end skiers or for the low end super recreational skiers but we have that broad range where you can ski a green run from the top of any lift and make it back down to the bottom of the lift and be with your family. I found that huge with my family even for my skiing. RM: Has the bill regarding foreign workers affected you at all? PP: Yes, it has. That’s been a struggle because the reality of the industry, especially as far as ski school is concerned, the realities of the industry is that very few people make year round living on teaching skiing. So those people travel, those people who do travel whether it’s Canadian’s going to Australia or Australian’s or New Zea-

lander’s or the UK coming to Canada, they are a travelling group so we feel we’ve been caught up in something that wasn’t directed at us but was cast wide enough to catch us. RM: How has your black belt background helped in terms of leadership?

PP: I was thinking about this today! The disciple of martial arts sometimes gives you the courage to wait, to sit back and be a little more respectful of time. There are sometimes that you just want to jump into something and be done and sometimes there is a better timing for it. When you’re sparring or when you’re fighting, you can attack and defend at the same time. If you try to attack and defend at the same time, you do neither well; it’s the one recipe for loss. So when you do attack, you attack with 100% commitment and when you do defend, you do it with 100% commitment, all the time while looking to turn your position around. That has allowed me to do the same thing from a business perspective as well. Sometimes you just have to take the blows to the chin and then move forward in a different direction. Or sometimes you just need to keep moving forward and pushing forward and pushing harder. Can’t do both at the same time. RM: So, you’re relatively new in the position and most great leaders know what their advantages and strengths are but they are also cognizant of their weaknesses. What would your weakness or area you’d like to improve in yourself ? PP: I would like to be a bit more patient and a bit less passionate about some things and a bit more objective. Sometimes being subjective and passionate gets stuff done, so it’s not always a bad thing, but sometimes I need to think two or three steps down the line and that’s what I am really trying to work on. That would probably be it. Not the only thing but the most important thing is I need to be more patient, less passionate, sometimes.

“Sometimes you just have to take the blows to the chin and then move forward in a different direction. Or sometimes you just need to keep moving forward and pushing forward and pushing harder.”

troubles that we had last year, we had a grooming team that went out there and worked magic that the public didn’t see. I also had the best powder that I’ve ever had in my life in early January. It was “The day,” to go skiing. I have been told by very good authority that the farmer’s almanac is looking after us this year so we’ll see how that goes. RM: The farmers are good that way. Is there anything else that you would like the season’s pass community to know about Big White that might be exciting news? PP: There is. We’re obviously building the new building at the Black Forest after being put on hold for a few years, going from the portable building to the nice shiny building, 150 lockers in there, giving more places for season pass holders to have something much nicer and drive up, ski off access. That’s happening. I guess the big thing is that we’re going to continue developing and investing in the resort. Since I’ve been here, there’s been close to 8 million dollars invested in the resort in the last three years. And it will continue. My plan is for it to continue and for us to keep growing and for us to be the best in the Okanagan, in the interior.

RM: The #1 thing people are going to ask, of you and of your staff is what is the snow going to be like this year? PP: Fantastic! I hope it’s amazing and I hope for the

Certain to be the finest tasting establishment in British Columbia, the hatch is a place where one can come and enjoy wine, and life. Icon: Hello, great to meet you. Glad you could make it here. Ross O.: Thanks for having me, yeah. I just got back from an investment opportunity in Eastern Europe, my somewhat apologies if I seem a bit out of it. It was a long trip, but highly successful. Icon: Oh, interesting. What were you doing there? Ross O.: As I said, looking for investments. And we came across a weight lifting Snowman. Exactly what we were looking for. We’re going to make a variety show based on him, should be quite good. Are you interested in investing? It’s all about the TV rights, that’s where the money is. All the good spots are taken up, but I can offer you Indonesia if you’re interested.

ICON OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Icon: Hmmm. Well, let’s talk later about that. Let’s get back to you and your project. So who are you and what’s your ‘day job’? Ross O.: Right, of course. I’m Ross O., mascot and corporate spokesperson for ‘the hatch’ in West Kelowna. That’s a new winery there, mostly thanks to me but the team have done alright in getting things going. Icon: Ross O., very interesting. Might I ask what the O stands for? Ross O.: Ostapowich. Icon: Really? Ross O.: Next question please.

FALL 2015

Icon: Alright then. So tell me about your place. Who are the people behind it? What’s your take on them and how do you all work together. Ross O.: Good Christ. Have you looked at me? I’m the symbol of what is the most unique winery in the Okanagan. I’d do it all myself, but turns out we needed some warm bodies to push some buttons and do this and/or that. Tragic, really. ‘Tis business, though, I suspect. Icon: Yeah, good help is hard to find. So who is your help? The winemaker there? The creative minds behind if you will. Ross O.: Ha! Pish-posh. Winemaker. What an absurd term. Wine is made in the vineyard, where I live and breathe. More like ‘grape don’t screw it up’ it should be.

Jason is a sweet kid though. More so a glam rocker than anything. Ever heard of Stuart Harper from ‘Iron Virgin’? That’s basically who’s making the wines here. Jason started out as a socalled ‘punk rocker’ then got into wine. Hey buddy, punk’s not dead, hint hint. Icon: Hmm. Never heard of him. Has he been in the Valley for long? Ross O.: Who, Jason or Stuart? But really, who’s heard of either of them? Nobody, that’s probably who. But allegedly Jason has been ‘making’ wine for about 15 years here. Likely story, though. Icon: Well, I look forward to finding out more about both of them. So Jesse Harnden, the ‘Sales and Marketing’ director, he’s had a big influence on what’s going on down there I’ve heard. They call him the ‘the mind behind’ or something like that, right? What’s his story? Ross O.: Cripes almighty. Sales AND marketing? That’s quite the title for a guy who used to waddle around Yaletown selling Antinori. This is a guy who can’t even manage a car (how’d that Lexus work out? Hint: look left even a red light) and when not driving a car manages to get them constantly broken into or towed. When the sign says no parking after 6, my question to you is ‘what makes you so special that you can continue to park there after 6?’ Long/short, Buster’s Towing with the win. Aside from that, yeah he’s something. Why are we still talking about him? Sorry, I’m jetlagged and hungover. Icon: Understood. Not pictured, but what’s the story with the ‘Chief Steward’, Andrew Melville? Ross O.: Yeah, he’s got issues. I’m not legally allowed to talk about them.

Icon: What kind of issues?

Jesse Harnden (GM) & Jason Parkes (Winemaker)

Ross O.: See above. Not legally allowed to talk about them. I will say he scrubs a mean toilet though. But really, that only leads to more questions than answers. Can we move on? Icon: Of course. I feel this discussion has gone a bit awry. Let’s talk wine after all. Ross O.: Speaking of issues, our wines aren’t one of them. Despite the disadvantage of Ziggy Stardust making us, and ‘Hardbody Harnden’ in charge of selling us, we wines are really delicious. I’m a snappy little Pinot Noir from our home Vineyard in West Kelowna, but all the lads on the wine team impress. Our strength is in our numbers, not our managers, and with the chaps at the hatch you’ll get everything from crisp and clean Sauv Blanc to rich and deep Reds like my Boy the ‘Dynasty Red’. My compatriot B. Yanco is a mean little tipple too. Our room for tasting us is legitimately wondrous; with Quails Gate right beside us we’re easy to find. And don’t worry, you won’t have to deal with those Moes mentioned above, the squad there are, as they say, tight. Icon: Sounds very interesting. So where can we find you and your other wines? Ross O.: I feel like hell. I need a Gin and Tonic, bad. Get me back up to normal, you know? Icon: Well, on that point I’d like to say thanks for your time and insight. It’s been interesting getting to know a wine like yourself. We hope things work out for you there.

AN ICONIC WINE TOUR Some of you may remember our very “Iconic” wine tour last year. We invited some good friends, among them our very own Batcherlorette Jillian Harris, left the car at home and instead took a helicopter for a truly unique wine tour. It was an amazing experience, and highly recommended. This year, however, we got the opportunity to test-drive a true super car – and combine it with a wine tour!

Our good friends at August Luxury Supercar, the Okangan’s new used luxury car dealership, handed us the keys to an amazing Ferrari California. This Italian supercar, a hardtop convertible with lots of luggage space, must be any gearheads dream to drive; especially in a location such as the Okanagan Valley with its winding roads along the lake, vineyards and orchards. And although the fires in Washington State caused some thick air we decided to have the top down ... and had a blast. From Kelowna, we headed north towards Vernon, left the highway in Lake Country to go up Okanagan Centre Road and turn into Camp Road. Ex Nihilo / Chaos Bistro Our first stop was Ex Nihilo Vineyards. Established by Jeff and Decoa Harder together with Jay and Twila Paulson, this modern Mediterranean-style winery is a must-stop with its beautiful location overlooking the lake. Ex Nihilo Pinot Noir v.2012 We fell in love with Ex Nihilo’s 2012 Pinot Noir. Notes of dried cherries, plums and ripe strawberries ... and quite simp-ly - just delicious! Well balanced with a smooth, lingering finish.

We actually had our helicopter pilot Peter from Alpine Helicopters pick us up at Ex Nihilo to go on a little sightseeing trip, but with all the smoke, it made no real sense, and so we decided to postpone it and instead have lunch at Ex Nihilo’s new Chaos Bistro. You have to try chef Jeff Kreklau’s fabulous pizzas from the woodfire pizza oven, one of the freh salads or the delicious charcuterie boards!

50th Parallel 2014 Rose (Pinot Noir) Our favourite is still the 2014 Pinot Noir, but this time we decided to sample the 2014 Rose (Pinot Noir), a fresh, dry and crisp bubbly. Vibrant and refreshing, a mix of fresh red berry-fruit, ruby grapefruit, florals and summer herbs.

Sparkling Hill Resort The “Okanagan Valley’s Crown Jewel” and an architectural masterpiece, Sparkling Hill Resort, would end our tour. The hotel is one of the premier wellness resort spa destination in North America. Offering 149 luxury rooms and penthouses, it is the 40,000-sq-ft, state-of-the-art wellness facility, considered by many to be the most unique in the world with its Swarovski crystal architecture, and offering 100-plus innovative healing treatments, that makes a stay a unique experience. We highly recommend to be there early so you can enjoy their wellness facilities and the restaurant.

What an amazing day ... so why not plan your own little luxury daytrip in our beautiful Okanagan Valley? You don’t need a Ferrari to experience a scenic drive to one of the many wineries, and there are numerous interesting B&Bs, hotels and resorts in the Valley for a restful stay in style. Or stay tuned ... we have some more ideas! Let’s see what we come up with next ...

50th Parallel Estate Winery Our second stop was at one of the newer wineries in the valley, 50th Parallel Estate Winery. It’s a short but beautiful 15-minute drive (a little bit faster in the Ferrari ...) from Ex Nihilo along the winding Carrs Landing Road (we couldn’t help but rev the California several times, the sound is simply amazing). Founded in 2012 by the “dynamic duo” Curtis Krouzel and Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel, we were fortunate

2011 Ferrari California Fast, comfortable and dramatic

Hard to believe, but the California is the entry level model in Ferrari’s lineup. The sveltelooking hardtop convertible has the automaker’s first (7-speed) dual clutch automated manual transmission and was also its first front-mounted model powered by a V-8 engine, a 4.3-liter V-8 with 460 horsepower and 358 pound-feet of torque. Which catapults it to 100 km/h in less than 4.0 seconds. Add the same F1-Trac traction control system that debuted on the 599 GTB Fiorano, Brembo brakes featuring carbon-ceramic discs, and an excellent suspension that makes it comfortable enough for daily use, and you will understand that we had an amazing day!

Cask & Barrel

West Kelowna’s Premier Liquor Store Billed as “West Kelowna’s premier liquor destination,” the recently opened Cask & Barrel on Stevens Road boasts the largest cooler in the Okanagan and features unique brews that can’t be found anywhere else. Thirty-nine doors of cooler space. Six doors of cold white wine. Four sommeliers on staff. The Okanagan’s largest selection of craft beers from all over North America. And a restaurant industry background that puts a strong emphasis on service. Those are the defining features of Cask & Barrel, West Kelowna’s newest liquor store. Cask & Barrel represents a new breed of beer, wine and spirit shop, one where finding the perfect brew is a quick and simple task as opposed to the arduous quest it once was. “People in the Okanagan tend to be more educated about wine, and they have a thirst for knowledge,” says Devin Smith, Owner and General Manager of Cask & Barrel. “The people living on the Westside and in the suburbs come in for an experience. Maybe they’re going to a barbecue where they’re having ribs, and they want a wine to pair with ribs. Or maybe they want to bring wine to dinner and impress their friends.” Smith says that Cask & Barrel is designed to cater to two groups of people: First, those who want to have an experience; and second, those who want to get in, get their beverage of choice, and get out. “All of the staff we’ve hired are people who have a background or interest in the industry,” he says. “We’re also doing a lot of tastings, wine tastings in particular. Because we have these experts on staff, we can open up some nicer bottles of wine and do tastings. That’s on Wednesday evenings – the sommelier will give a seminar about the wine and explain what people are tasting and why.”

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY

By the time you hold this magazine in your hands, the 35th Fall Okanagan Wine Festival is most likely in full swing (October 1-11) and expected to attract over 20,000 visitors who enjoy more than 120 events throughout the Valley. Part of the festival are the British Columbia Wine Awards, the province’s oldest wine judging competition ... and, with more than 600 entries and growing, this event celebrates the amazing quality of wines made from 100 per cent B.C. fruit. Well, we thought we do our very own Fall Tasting ... and here are some of our seasonally appropriate favourites!

QUIDNI 2014 VIOGNIER

2010 KETTLE VALLEY CABERNET MERLOT

1

After almost 25 years, Kettle Valley is the oldest singleowner winery on the Naramata Bench. We fell in love with their Cabernet Merlot, a blend of approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. The grapes for this wine come primarily from the Trovao, Murray and King Drive vineyards in Naramata. The grapes were hand picked between October 20 and November 4, 2010 at approximately 25.7 brix. The wine has gone through a full malolactic fermentation and was aged in French oak for 25 months.

Quidni Estate Winery is located in the South Okanagan on the Naramata Bench. They say “the proof is in the glass” and in the end we actually picked three of their wines. The first is the 2014 Viognier. A 100% Naramata Bench wine, this delicious Varietal Viognier is a pure example of this aromatic grape. Tropical fruit aromas leap out of the glass to load your senses and the taste of fruit forward citrus as well as peach and apricot notes swirling around your palate. This wine finishes clean and with a crisp and refreshing acidity that leaves you wanting more.

A bestseller (no wonder at $13 a bottle...) this wine combines floral and fruity Riesling flavors with the spiciness of a classic Gewurztraminer, making it slightly off dry and “easy to drink.” The Why Not White adapts well to most dishes. As with all other Quidni wines they are currently only available at the Winery or by ordering online!

BLACK WIDOW 2013 RED BACK

QUIDNI 2014 WHY NOT WHITE Why Not White ... is an aromatic fruity white, a 50/50 blend of Gewurztraminer from the Quidni property in Naramata and Riesling grown in the Oliver area.

Great aromas, concentration, depth of flavour, long finish - the 2013 Red Back has it all! Inspired by Australian Cabernet / Shiraz (thus the name of the Black Widow’s cousin from down under), this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Aromas of dried fruits, coffee and toasted oak. Medium bodied but richly flavoured, with a delicious note of chocolate on the finish. Retail: $32.00

QUIDNI 2011 BARREL SELECT MERLOT Another fantastic wine from our friends over at Quidni Estate Winery is the 2011 Barrel Select Merlot. The Barrel Selection is as close to what a wine can taste right out of the barrel as possible. But, hurry, only 42 cases were produced and it was almost sold out at press time. We have already sampled the 2012 and it is equally amazing with a big nose of dark fruit, dried flowers and bay leaf, with a finish that is full and long with ripe berries, spice and sagebrush. Retail: $29.00

THE HATCH 2012 HATCHCHILD

THE HATCH 2013 DYNASTY WHITE

Just read our article about The Hatch Winery in this issue .. and you will see it all is a little bit different at this unique winery! And so is this wine - a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (rare in the Okanagan) made with grapes grown in the Inkameep Vineyard which has consistently produced the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in British Columbia. A well balanced wine layered with toasty oak and soft tannins.

“A pachydermic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Viognier.” With scents of melon, peach, and apricot, this white wine has a complex, lingering finish and is great for sipping by itself or to pair it with seafood (especially oysters), grilled white meats or pretty much all “not-too-heavy” pasta dishes.

The

Canadian Brewhouse & Grill Canadian Brewhouse Brings Hand-Made Food, an Eye for Detail to Pandosy Village Alberta-based chain focuses on creating a memorable experience for guests, with daily meal specials and an extensive selection of wines and flavoured vodkas to enjoy. For Dustin Martin, the Canadian Brewhouse on Pandosy Street is about more than just serving up top beers on tap.

Bacaro Kitchen & Drink Kelowna

“We want to be a neighbourhood place,” Martin says. “The Mission is a beautiful place, and we want to be a big part of the community.” Martin is the General Manager for the Canadian Brewhouse Kelowna location, and for him, running a successful sports bar means creating a unique experience. And with lots of fun and interesting events happening all the time, it’s not hard to get out and meet other Kelownites at the Canadian Brewhouse. “We host weekly industry nights and monthly theme parties,” Martin says. “(During the first week of September) we had a Captain Morgan-themed event. We’ll be doing a big Halloween bash this year, plus a lot of fundraisers for local charities.” The Brewhouse’s next event – Lobster Fest 2015 - will be on Oct. 2, in celebration of Alexander Keith’s birthday. Starting at 6 p.m., Brewhouse guests can enjoy a 1.5-pound lobster, Caesar salad, pasta, garlic toast and a pint of Alexander Keith’s India Pale Ale for $29.99. The Brewhouse will give away several prizes over the course of the night. Martin says that the details are where the Canadian Brewhouse truly shines, from the Pandosy location’s underground parking to the maple leaf-shaped burgers to the vodka tasting room. There’s also 30 beers on tap, of which seven are from B.C. micro-breweries for those who enjoy craft beer. For Martin, being unique and unconventional is a key component of running a successful business. “It’s funny,” he laughs, “people point out that our staff is so happy. Well, all we do is to provide an environment where it’s okay to be quirky and goofy. Work should be fun. I love coming to work because there’s something new every day. Every problem is a chance for me to save the day and be a superhero. And I love the people.”

Mon Thong has been offering the Okanagan’s first and best Thai cuisine for nearly 30 years. “We came up to Kelowna from Vancouver to help a friend open the restaurant,” owners Joe and Sunee Karunyasopon laugh, “but who would have thought that we would become the sole owners. Described as an “unforgettable taste of Thailand” and emphasizing the use of fresh and quality ingredients in the preparation of all their dishes, Mon Thong’s new menu features both the classic Thai favorites, as well as several new dishes which explore modern Thai cuisine. “You need to know that nowadays, a lot of restaurants are serving pre-made food,” Karunyasopon explains. “Thai food requires a very specific cooking style, and at Mon Thong we work hard to make a visit an unforgettable experience, and we only used the best fresh food for our dishes. When you come to us, you will get a proper Thai meal!” So explore their menu to delight your taste buds with dishes such as Pad Thai, Tom Kha Gai, and Gang Pak Ruam Mit. Myra Canyon at Full Moon. This engineering wonder of the world is pretty special. On a moonlit night, it is spectacular to walk in from Myra Station to Trestle 11 and back. If the angle of the moon is good, you can walk through both tunnels without a flashlight. A backpack, a bottle of wine and glasses are mandatory. Treats for my dog Holly are also required. •Blair Baldwin, General Manager

Bliss Bakery. My fondest outing is to head out with my husband on a Sunday morning to the West Kelowna ferry dock and launch our kayak. We paddle to Peachland and treat ourselves to fabulous café and gooey cinnamon buns at the Bliss Bakery. We even do it in the fall with our mitts and toques on, although that makes handling the Baileys in the kayak a little tricky. •Patricia Husk, Project Manager

Kettle Valley Rail Trail. The newly resurfaced Kettle Valley Rail Trail from Penticton to Little Tunnel is such an asset. Start at Vancouver Hill and cycle out to Little Tunnel and back in about 90 minutes. It is so easy to cycle and the views and sense of history come alive. On our return, we like to stop at the Bench Artisan Market for lunch to replenish lost calories. •Lori Pike Raffan Pioneer Country Market. Grab a bunch of friends on your mountain bike and cycle the Mission Creek Greenway from bottom to top. And here’s the catch: Choose a Saturday morning and leave Lakeshore Road at 8 a.m. You will be back by 930am and must stop at Pioneer Country Market on historic Benvoulin Road in time for hot spudniks – made on site. Cliff Jumping at Rattlesnake Point. That says it all. Borrow a boat or beg someone to take you. Drive past Rattlesnake Island around to the point - cliff jumping is so Okanagan. There are plenty of small and medium jumps for you to practice on before you work your way to the big boys. •Blair Baldwin

Wineries. Having grown up here, our wineries have grown to be amongst the best in the world. So whenever we have friends visiting, we love going on a regional wine tour. There are many different wine regions in the Okanagan and every time we go out, we discover wonderful new wines and amazing characters. •Allen Tozer, Finance Manager

Naramata. Drive out to Naramata, rent paddleboards at Sun‘n Sup in the village and paddleboard along the quiet southern Okanagan shoreline. When done, stop for a scoop of ice cream at the Naramata Store. •Lori Pike Raffan, Earned Media & Public Relations Manager

Infusions Restaurant at Okanagan College. It’s an unknown gem. The food is innovative and the pricing superb value. It is so fun to dine on cuisine freshly prepared by culinary students under the direction of some of the Okanagan’s best chefs led by Bernard Casavant. •Blair Baldwin

Campbell Mountain Trail. Living in Naramata has its advantages. I love an early morning trek with my dog or my partner Rod – whoever has more energy - on the trail that circles Campbell Mountain, taking time to stop and marvel at the views that overlook Penticton. It builds up our appetite to go to for lunch with pizza and beer at Bad Tattoo followed by an outdoors nap if we don’t have to work the vineyard. •Marjorie King, Judging Manager

Cycling Lakeshore Road. On any day April through October, I love to make it home and grab my bike and cycle to the end of Lakeshore Road and back. I like dusk the best because the sky is stunning, the serenity is calming and the scenery is always interesting be it the animals, wine tourists or happy locals on their bikes. Riders wave to each other – a nice sense of community. •Blair Baldwin

Kelowna Rockets. When I think of winter and longer nights, I love to go to a Kelowna Rockets game – the arena, the team, the people of Kelowna always make it fun. Go Rockets, go! Allen Tozer, Finance Manager

Paul’s Tomb Hike. The walk to Paul’s Tomb from the bottom of Knox Mountain is beautiful 12 months of the year – even better if you end it with a swim at the end or at least a toe tip in winter. It is perfect for families, for dates and to just go out by yourself to unwind. •Tom Whittaker, Operations Manager

Insider information is everything! This issue we speak to Blair Baldwin and his team at Okanagan Wine Festivals Society about what they think makes the Okanagan so special.

Antler Beach. My fav. family outing is to drive to Antler Beach on the south side of Peachland. It’s an easy walk for kids and adults of any age love it, and Hardy Falls are spectacular. The beach for a picnic provides unparalleled views to the south. •Tom Whittaker

Cross training anyone? Brandt Fralick’s new Prime Performance men’s nights are so much fun. It’s an eclectic assortment of guys from 16 up to old guys like me working out, sweating and laughing together. The youngsters inspire us seniors to work harder and we inspire the kids to man up. Trying to be fit for life allows for more wine consumption. So I’m told. •Blair Baldwin
