YOUTHZONE Children create a haven for bees and butterflies A total of 230 children from Berry Hill Primary and St Peter's Primary schools helped to plant a wildflower meadow at King George V Park, Black Scotch Lane, Mansfield. The seeds of native annual wildflower species were provided through a £750 Envirogrant from Veolia, the UK's leading recycling and waste management company and a £400 grant from OPAL, which aims to create and inspire a new generation of nature-lovers by getting people to explore, study, enjoy and protect their local environment. Naturescape British Wild Flowers, in Langar, provided the seeds and prepared the ground. The children, who were helped by Mansfield District Council's Parks staff, their parents, employees from Veolia and staff at both schools scattered the seeds, which will flower in the summer attracting bees, butterflies and birds. They also took part in a ball game to illustrate what happens during pollination. Ten pupils from Samworth Church Academy along with the Friends of Forest Road Park and the Council's Parks staff (photo right) recently planted five Silver Birch and Rowan trees at Forest Road Park (also known locally as Spider Park) thanks to a Greenwood Community Tree Planting Grant. Cllr Philip Shields said: "It is fantastic to have local schoolchildren involved as it strengthens our links with the local community and helps us work together to improve our local parks for the benefit of all our residents. The children were so enthusiastic and really enjoyed the experience - hopefully it will inspire a future generation of nature-lovers."

As parents you are the most important influence for your children and everything you do, no matter how big or small, will have an impact on their learning and development. We all want our children to grow up into healthy, confident and independent individuals who are prepared to meet the challenges of school life. In order to gain the confidence to engage with peers and teachers at school it is important that all children develop • early social skills, • the ability to listen and to communicate,

Regular Educational Feature Top Tips for Time Management With GCSE and A Level examinations season here, one of the most crucial parts of studying and preparing for examinations is to help our children manage their time appropriately. This isn’t always easy in a world of mobile communications, social networking and other distractions in the summer such as (hopefully) good weather and sporting events on the television. There are 1,440 minutes in a day which should give our children plenty of time to study in but with so many “time bandits” encroaching on ours and their time below are some top tips with help with time management: Switch off mobile phones when studying. This also provides something to look forward after an hour or two of studying. Encourage children to get a good night’s sleep. It can be really difficulty to concentrate when tired. Allocate a set time of the day for studying and stick to this. Let others know not to contact or disturb your children when they are studying. Work out with your child how long they can concentrate before needing a break. Try 30 minutes then a 10 minute break. Encourage your child to use a record book or diary. Creating a calendar of study identifies times for work and times for fun. Find out the best time of day for learning for your child and help them plan their study calendar around this. Remember, we are all individuals and learn in different ways so our children may not find the study techniques you used useful. Talk to your child and find out what works for them and then help them allocate time for study. Brighter Futures Education is a local business run by a mother and daughter team offering one to one tuition services for children of all ages. Jill and Hayley are pleased and excited to be contributing to “High Life” magazine.

• an understanding of number and a love of books For these skills to develop the brain needs to be stimulated and challenged repeatedly every day of every week. Attending a nursery or pre-school gives children the opportunity to learn alongside others with early years specialists working with the family to plan the next steps towards effective learning. The Government continues to support families by offering tax savings through childcare voucher schemes along with grants for eligible families from age two. We are personally committed to ensure children get the very best preparation for school and life by developing these all important skills. Community Year 7 talent sparkles at Samworth Church Academy

S

amworth Church Academy is celebrating the achievements of two year 7 students who are making a name for themselves in their respective disciplines of ice-skating and ballroom dancing. Rebecca Gillespie aged 12 (photo right) takes her ice-skating so seriously she trains 6 days a week getting up at 4.30 am and is on the ice for 6.30 am. Rebecca is modest about her achievements and says she was surprised at being placed so highly at the competition "I was expecting to do a little bit worse so I'm very pleased with where I came." But modesty aside, she has no doubt about where she intends to take her talent in years to come, "I'd like to skate at the Winter Olympics one day!" Ballroom dancer Kasey Meakin who is also 12 (photo left) competed recently, this time at Blackpool’s Nationwide Ballroom and Latin 2013 competition. Although this was the first time Kasey had qualified for the competition she was placed 15th overall. Jane Thompson, Welfare Manager at the Samworth Church Academy said: “We are very pleased at the Academy to have such successful and committed students both in and outside of the Academy. Both of these girls show such a dedication to their academic work, as well as their activities in dance and ice- skating after school hours that they are an inspiration to others.”

Charlotte will also be travelling to Majorca with Ollie for the GB camp, along with their Coach Glenn Smith, Mansfield District Council's Swimming Development Officer and coach to the Mansfield Nova squad.

Community The right team to brighten up a child’s life

F

ostering can be a challenging task, although with the right help and support, it can be a rewarding and fulfilling role.

With three children of her own, Ravenshead wife and mum Helen McBride is kept busy. But with the support of Team Fostering, Helen and her husband Simon have now fulfilled an ambition to become foster carers, something they have been doing for about year. Helen says: “It was something we always wanted to do. Children deserve somewhere safe and stable and once our own children were of a certain age, we decided the time was right. “Why wouldn’t you do it? There will be ups and downs and there will be challenges ahead but I would urge people to explore the idea and gain opinion from people.” Team Fostering is an independent, not-for-profit fostering agency that has its East Midlands office at the Mansfield i-Centre, in Hamilton Way on the Oakham Business Park. The website www.teamfostering.co.uk has a wealth of information and shows how working with Team Fostering delivers benefits to carers and children alike. Agency director Rosy Holden said: “Becoming a foster carer can be hard and challenging work but it can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We’d love to hear from anyone interested in taking the next step to becoming a foster carer.”

All Saints’ Runs for Life What do you do when one of your fellow students is diagnosed with a brain tumour and undergoes aggressive treatment? This was the question faced by Year 10 students at All Saints’ Catholic School in Mansfield when Lucy Jones became seriously ill in March. Their response: get as many students and staff involved as possible and support Cancer Research UK in ‘Race for Life’. Lucy’s classmates and friends wanted to do something positive to show their support and have encouraged staff to join them in the 10km run in Clumber Park on 22nd June. Around eighty year 10 girls and 14 female staff will make up ‘Lucy’s Dream Team’ and hope to raise a significant sum of money through sponsorship to help further research into finding cures for cancer. Lucy is currently being treated at The Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. Members of the public are welcome to support the team by donating at:

Sweeps the Boards at Mansfield 2020 Business Awards! Winners of 3 coveted business awards, Mansfield Manor Hotel has been recognised for their great efforts in refurbishing the old Portland Hall Hotel. This wonderful 1805 Georgian building had been neglected for some years until Paul Andrews and Diane Doran purchased Left to Right: Paul Andrews, Kim Wilson, Diane Doran the property exactly one year ago. Their efforts to reinstate the Hotel as a centrepiece for Mansfield was recognised by the award for “Most Promising New Business”. Paul Andrews told High Life Magazine: “We are delighted! We have worked very hard to bring a feel of modern sophistication to the building, whilst maintaining all the original features wherever possible”.

Paul and Diane have also worked hard with Community groups to reduce anti social behaviour, with great success and are fast on the way to becoming the Town’s premier wedding venue. “We have booked around 65 weddings in the last year, as people love the place right away”, said Diane. Leaving school with no qualifications, Paul and Diane both gained Masters degrees and worked hard to develop a property portfolio as well as several other businesses before purchasing Mansfield Manor Hotel. Their achievements in business were impressive enough to win the “Most Entrepreneurial Spirit” award. During the interview for the awards, Diane and Paul told the judges: “One of our sayings is from Goethe: “Everything is difficult before it is easy”. Its easy to give up when things get tough, but we try to stay focused and we are tenacious by nature”. The team is completed by Bar Manager: Connor Doran and apprentice Kim Wilson. Kim’s award for “Apprentice of the Year” completed the trio of awards for Mansfield Manor. At only 17 years old, Kim has become an integral member of the senior team and is looking to further her achievements by taking on a sales and marketing role following the end of her apprenticeship. Kim beat four other finalists and this was by far the most heavily entered category. Diane said: “We are so very Proud of Kim – she has thoroughly earned this !” “We are so grateful for the support of the Mansfield Community and looking forward to a great future here”. said Paul Andrews.

Q Editor’s Interview Mansfield Town Football Club

Basking in Glory Our local football club is currently in celebration following their long-awaited return back to the Football League. We invited Mark Stevenson, Head of Media & Communications to speak to us at The High Life and share not only their obvious excitement at moving back into the league but also the effects they believe this could have on the club and the local town. Name: Mark Stevenson Role: Head of Media & Communications How long been at the club? 6 years

Q

. Mansfield Town Football Club is at the heart of the town with most Saturday’s residents enjoying the sight of the blue and yellow dressed fans walking to Quarry Lane. We believe this is going to be a fabulous lift to the spirits in our area and already the media coverage both local and national has been immensely positive....so the question is how did you keep the team and fans positive when things were not going so well Football is a different business than any other. From a public relations point of view, there is no better ploy than when a team is consistently winning football matches. It creates a natural feel-good atmosphere around the club and in the terraces. When a team is experiencing an indifferent run of form, it is important that people see the long-term picture and this is the message which can only really be conveyed when a team is experiencing an indifferent run of results.

. From a business perspective many local companies are having to work even harder to motivate staff when things are not quite going to plan – so any tips on how you kept the team spirit and constantly inspired the players to keep going for it? Especially at the end when they really had to produce the extra mile to win the title and the fans were so relying on them to win. This is a question more for the manager, Paul Cox, than me. Nothing can be taken away from the magnificent achievement of him leading the team to the league title in a demanding league where only two places are up for grabs. Having worked with Paul for over two years, his whole ethos is based around hard work, employing the right strategy and ensuring his players’ mind-set is both level and focussed to achieving the desire goal; three points from the next game.

Q

. Being back in the football league after 5 years of absence what plans do you have in place to take advantage of this current situation? The Chairman, John Radford, is hugely ambitious and has led out plans for a new state of the art training ground at the side of the One Call Stadium. Having viewed the plans, they look very impressive and will bode well for the development of the players in the years ahead. In addition, a new academy is set to be formed in the summer, where young

players from our area will have the chance to move through the ranks at the club and have the opportunity of playing for the first team in the future.

Q

. Attendance maybe was an issue just being in the conference league, which obviously affects the financial status –– do you expect re-joining the football league to have a significant impact on your financial position both for paying for the club and for bringing in new talent? The average attendance for games at the One Call Stadium will increase because of two factors; firstly, people are attracted to success and want to be a progressive football club. Having won the league title last season, more fans are expected to ‘hop on the back’ of a successful campaign and add to the numbers of the faithful. Secondly, the clubs in League two are better supported and travel far greatly in their numbers to Mansfield than teams we have played against in the Conference.

Q

. Also judging by capacity of crowd for Wrexham match 6,000 – how to aim to keep that level of interest – a sell out?

11

Community Matches such as the one you mentioned, against Wrexham on the last day of the campaign, are exceptional days. I wouldn’t quite expect 6,000 inside the ground every home game, but the interest is there in and around the town to suggest that the home fans will swell next season. It is an exciting time to be a Stags supporter just now, which will have a great impact in the wider community.

Q

. What about investing in the actual football ground, for example the bishop Street Stand has been condemned – do you plan to do any renovation work? There are various ideas about developing the Bishop Street side of the ground, but they are in a very early stage. It will be a case of ‘watch this space’.

Q

. Already as stated previously the success bought an amazing much

Mansfield FC A4 Leaflet

3/5/13

needed positive atmosphere into the centre of Mansfield on a Saturday a few weeks ago. How much influence do you believe the club does have on the local area and the economy? The club is the oldest institution in the Town and whether people come to the matches regularly or not, I believe most people have a certain level of affection for the club and want us to do well. Research has shown that Mansfield Town as a Football League club adds an additional £5m to the local economy – so it is a big part of the town’s fabric.

Q

. Also of course any plans for increased local employment with football players/gate keepers, catering staff, etc? The club is developing at pretty fast pace. With the addition of a new training ground in the near future, this will create jobs for local people, as it is believed that the training ground, which will

contain a café etc, will be open to the public eventually.

Q

. Any plans for increased involvement within the community? The club has an excellent and thriving community program, where over 12,000 local kids are visited every single season. There are a number of activities which are available to youngsters in the area which can give young people the opportunity of getting even closer to their football club. The High Life would like to offer massive congratulations and encourage our local residents and businesses to stand proud of our local successful football club and go and support them! Gentlemen’s Club Top Trends: Daddy Cool Best Style Buys This Father’s Day Stuck for a Father’s Day gift this year? The high street is packed with men’s accessories ripe for present ideas. Here’s our Father’s Day rescue guide to help you choose the best style buys this summer. If you’ve got yourself a dapper dad, the growing popularity of smart tailoring means gentlemanly styling is no longer the sole realm of business wear. The advent of yacht club dressing and the growing popularity of the country tweed look offer plenty of choice for dads modelling themselves on Mad Men’s sophisticated Don Draper or Doctor Who’s bow-tied Matt Smith. For traditional dads, tweed has made a huge comeback with elbow patched jackets and flat caps ideal for a stroll in the country. Vintage inspired leather satchels are great for carrying the family picnic supplies. If dad’s off on his holidays soon, why not get him something for the trip? Retro inspired sunglasses and aviator shades are huge this year. Look for tortoiseshell frames, 60s styling and brow bars. Throw in a straw panama hat for the classic British summer look. Chair of the Mansfield and District Leisure Trust, Brian Taylor said: “It’s been an

incredible first year and I’m delighted that the improvements we’ve made have driven a substantial increase in usage across the board from the very young to the very old. We plan to build on our success and continue to improve the facilities to best meet the needs of the local community.” Portfolio holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, Councillor Philip Shields said: “This is a great example of how partnership working can create a fantastic service for the benefit of all leisure users across our District. “It is great to see how far the service has come in a relatively short time with investment in facilities, new activities and reduced pricing options.” Photo: Portfolio holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, Councillor Philip Shields and Ian Bagshaw Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex Facility Manager exercise in the refurbished Water Meadows Gym.

Regular Feature: Keys to Success Ask an INTERNET ENTREPRENEUR - Edition 11

Having a website is not enough!

Part 2 in the series of “HOW to Get MORE Visitors to Your Website and Convert to Sales” I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been asked to comment on whether I think a website looks good (hoping that I will say yes) Why? Because the owner is disappointed with (or at best, questioning) its performance. They aren’t seeing any results, specifically buyers! Unfortunately there’s a bad pattern to this; People so often and naively associate a ‘good looking’ website with an expectation for automatically getting visitors and making sales online. The reality is this – A website is similar to a bricks and mortar shop, it needs passing traffic (visitors, footfall) because otherwise, no one knows you’re there and so no one buys from you! Having an attractive website (or an ugly one for that matter) does not mean you’ll automatically get visitors and make sales! Sorry to be the one to have to tell you this, but I’d rather tell you an ugly truth than a beautiful lie. When it comes to spending your budget, it’s far more important to spend the largest amount of it not on the website, but on getting traffic to it! And what’s more, before the website even gets built, it needs designing with a SALES PROCESS in mind. I see very few websites

that have any clear evidence of this and it’s so critically important. I cannot overemphasise the need to have a clear sales process built into your website. (more to come on sales process later in this series when we get to “converting visitors”) When it comes to generating TRAFFIC, we can either “pull” it, or “push” it or both! I like to do both to maximise the opportunities. Introducing - “Search engine optimisation” or SEO for short. This is a process of maximizing the number of visitors to a website by ensuring that the site remains high on the list of results provided by the search engine. SEO can be categorised into two types; “On-site” and “Off-site” which I will explain in the next edition and then begin showing you some EXACT methods to help you drive unlimited traffic to your website! Look out for the continuation of “Search engine Optimisation” and “HOW to Get MORE Visitors to Your website and Convert to Sales” series in next month’s edition of The High Life Magazine In the meantime, if you have any questions, please email them to me at carl@carlkilvington.com and I’ll do my very best to provide you with the answers. Stage comics, situation comedies and comedy panel shows have all experienced a massive rise in popularity and I can only applaud this. LADY GAGA, JESSIE J AND PINK TRIBUTES ALL IN ONE NIGHT The award winning tribute artist, Vicky Jackson will be performing covers from Lady Gaga, Jessie J and Pink in the Lindhurst Rooms at the Mansfield Civic Centre in Mansfield on Saturday 15th June 2013. Vicky’s look-a-like and sound constantly delivers the attitude, vocals and performance that you would expect from all the acts she doubles. She was one of the very first Lady Gaga tributes on the scene and admits this is her most exciting venture to date. Songs include Lady Gaga’s number one hits and cult smashes ‘Pokerface’, ‘Paparazzi’, ‘Let’s Dance’ and

‘Edge of Glory’. She is quickly gaining a reputation as the best Gaga on the circuit. She also brings a brand new show for 2013 as Jessie J with the massive vocal impersonation of one of the most exciting stars to come out of the UK in years! Her show this year also features some of Pinks’ big hits including songs from ‘The Truth About Love’, and features hits from the early R’n’B inspired Pink days including ‘You Make Me Sick’ and ‘Get The Party Started.’ Vicky commented; ‘I am so excited about performing my new show this year at Mansfield in June.’ Tickets to this fantastic music night cost £10 and can be purchased in advance by calling 01623 656 766 or by buying them direct from the Lindhurst Rooms in Mansfield Civic Centre. Portfolio Holder for Tenancy Services and Special Housing Needs, Councillor Mick Colley said: “This competition is an exciting new initiative involving the great outdoors, which is open to all Council tenants. Culture

The Southwell Trail Walk Southwell Trail dates back to 1842 when it was part of the Midland Railway running from Rolleston via Southwell to Mansfield. Completed in April 1871, the line became renowned for poor passenger services, with the majority of use being for goods trains carrying coal. By 1968 the line was closed, a casualty of the modernisation of British Rail. The old Railway was bought by Nott’s County Council in the 1970s. Since then, the Southwell Trail, has been managed as a cross-country route used by walkers and cyclists to horse riders. The Trail now supports a wide range of habitats, because it crosses two distinct geological areas. The Sherwood Sandstone around Bilsthorpe and Farnsfield, which is acidic poor soil and supports few species, whereas the Keupar Marl south at Kirklington spreading towards Southwell has rich meadows and woodlands. Species to look out for include the common lizard (in the open around Farnsfield), various raptors including sparrow hawks and buzzards, and many butterflies, including the speckled wood. The trail is a long walk and will take a full day, being linear it can be a bit of a trek and you should have good walking boots and provisions to keep you going. There are four points to park (marked with a “P” on the map, with Farnsfield and Southwell offering the best and easiest starting points. Also marked on the map is a short pretty walk from the Station Road Southwell car park heading along the trail and then taking a right turn on a public footpath to intersect the river greet at Maythorne. Turn right after the buildings to follow the north side of the river bank back to the car park.

Dates unveiled for Mansfield Arts Festival 2013 Artists, musicians, singers, dancers, Thespians and entertainers are being invited to come together once again this summer to celebrate the best of Mansfield, when the Mansfield Arts Festival returns for a second year. The festival, which is organised by Mansfield District Council, will take place between 6 July and 21 July. A number of events have already been confirmed for the festival including the James Maude Camera Club exhibition and Mansfield Society of Artists’ exhibition at Mansfield Museum. The Arts Festival programme will also feature the closing show of the Palace Theatre’s community production of Brassed Off. People from across the District are encouraged to get involved during the fortnight by either holding their own performance or exhibition, or participating in one of the events currently being organised. If you would like to stage your

own event during the fortnight please register at www.mansfield. gov.uk/artsfestival Performances and exhibitions can take place in a venue local to you, or the Council may be able to help you find a suitable indoor or outdoor venue. All registered events will be promoted as part of the festival. The Arts Festival forms part of the District Council’s events calendar, which aims to attract visitors to the town. This year’s programme will also include a series of events in the town centre, which will be delivered in partnership with Mansfield BID. Following a significant reduction in the Council’s events’ budget, the Council has reviewed its annual programme and come to the decision that it is not able to hold the annual Party in the Park event. However, it is hoped that the alternative events and activities will help the Council achieve its corporate priorities.

. Night Shyamalan returns with a science fiction film that sounds like it was written with Will Smith and his son Jaden in mind. After cataclysmic events forced humans to leave Earth a 1000 years ago, Outer space, legendary General, Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from duty to see his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Smith Jr). However their craft crash lands on the strange planet of Earth, left to run wild for a millennium. Cypher is critically injured and with the clock ticking both must work together and battle across the planet to signal for help, avoiding an unstoppable alien that has escaped with them during the crash. As with all Shyamalan films, the plot is pretty vague and it is no surprise that the film unwinds with plenty of twists along the way and with ‘Smith & Smith’ meeting many newly evolved life forms that have evolved on Earth after humans departed

it doesn’t know who his mother is. What he does know, however, is that his father, Guy, is dying of cancer. Feeling his death is imminent, Guy gathers around him his oldest friends - or at least the friends with the most to lose by his death. Paul - the rising star in the Labour party who dreads the day a tape they all made at university might come to light; Alison and Robbie, corporate bunnies whose relationship is daily more fractious; Pris and Haze, once an item, now estranged, and finally Hol friend, mentor, former lover and the only one who seemed to care. But what will happen to Kit when Guy is gone? And why isn’t Kit’s mother in the picture? As the friends reunite for Guy’s last days, old jealousies, affairs and lies come to light as Kit watches on.
