18. 다음 글의 목적으로 가장 적절한 것은? [1점] A significantly increasing number of people nowadays are using smartphones for many reasons. Smartphones combine the versatility of cell phones, gaming consoles, PDAs, and personal computers into one handheld device. While many standard cell phones allow you to check emails, smartphones offer a complete Internet experience. You can send emails with attached files, browse the Internet or watch videos. Many smartphones support GPS ( Global Positioning System) that helps find directions to your destination in moments. They allow you to store and play your entire collection of music, and also allow you to download and watch movies and television shows. The greatest advantage to owning a smartphone is the availability of thousands of applications ─ called apps. For example, note-taking and calendar apps with reminders help you stay organized and make sure you don’t forget important tasks.

As an adult, ② she followed the same routine until one day she wondered what the purpose of cutting off the end of the roast was. ③ She asked her mother, who answered she hadn’t thought about it and just copied what her mother had done. She then asked ④ her grandmother, who explained that when she was a young mother, the only roasting pan she’d had was too short for a standard roast, so she had to cut off the end to fit into the pan. ⑤ She’d long since gotten roasting pans in larger sizes and hadn’t cut an end off since. I remember (A) driving / to drive to work several years ago, having recently made the decision to write a book. I was listening to a radio interview with Tom Clancy. The brilliant satirist Alexander Pope once wrote: “Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.” To me, it seems that Pope’s advice is the best way to live an objective life. Clearly, it is also very helpful in eliminating the effects of negative expectations. But what about positive expectations? If I listen to Joshua Bell with no expectations, the experience is not going to be nearly as satisfying or pleasurable as if I listen to him and say to myself, “My god, how lucky I am to be listening to Joshua Bell play live in front of me.” My knowledge that Bell is one of the best players in the world contributes immeasurably to my pleasure. As it turns out, expectations can sometimes become a source of ___________________ .

why. Sometimes their answers are about control or power. Other times I can tell that they are interested in the perks: a good parking place, the corner office, a better salary, a respected title, etc. Only rarely ② do I hear what I believe is the only right answer for wanting to be a leader: helping others. Of all the ten questions I ask myself, this is the one I focus on most often. Why? Because I know ③ what power can do to a person. It is very easy to move from being a ④ serving leader to being a self-serving one. Because one of the qualities that all good leaders have is the ability to assess situations very ⑤ quick, they are often in a position to take care of their own needs and desires first ─ to set themselves up ─ before helping anyone else. That is always a temptation for a leader, and it is always wrong.

[22~23] 다음 글의 요지로 가장 적절한 것을 고르시오.

People don’t always have a good opinion of us. If you do something that affects them in a negative way, however well intentioned it may be, that negative impact will color their opinion of your action. Have you ever tried to help someone, only to have your efforts end up being misinterpreted by the person you were trying to help? For example, you invite a colleague to join your group on a project, thinking the colleague wants to be included in an opportunity to work on something different, whereas the object of your attention thinks you’re scheming to get him or her to do your job. What you intended as genuine helpfulness comes off as meddling to someone else. We cannot predict with perfect certainty how people will respond to our behavior. Even though we behave carefully, there will be times when we have to employ the apologetic phrase, “I was only trying to help.”

different properties and foundations, to multiply the “world-ness” of existence. If the unit of biological thinking is an organism and the unit of chemical thinking is a molecule, the unit of philosophical thinking is a world. A philosopher thinks in worlds, and this may become a crucial capacity in the near future, with the proliferation of new, world-like virtual realities and multi-dimensional physical realities. A philosopher will ________________________ a new universe, or galaxy, or planet, or species. Through philosophical thinking, a logical possibility of a new world will be posited and tested, and then astronauts, engineers, and computer programmers will come to transform this possibility into reality, into a place where people have sufficient physical and existential conditions to grow as personalities and social beings.

Socioeconomic circumstances can greatly influence families. Income determines recreational pursuits. One family may be able to afford a vacation, whereas another family finds leisure opportunities in picnics and free community offerings. A family’s income level often influences choices such as housing, education, daycare facilities, material goods, and nutrition. Because of economic constraints, adults may have to work two jobs or several part-time jobs to provide for the family, which affects the amount of time they can spend with partners or children. Older siblings may be required to take on more household or babysitting responsibilities and daycare may replace home care for children. Moreover, this constraint also may potentially affect to the children’s mind-set. All these circumstances can place significant levels of stress on the entire family unit.

26. Music can transcend time and culture. Music that was exciting to

the contemporaries of Mozart and Beethoven is still exciting, although we do not share their culture. The early Beatles’ songs are still exciting although the Beatles have unfortunately broken up. Similarly, some Venda songs that must have been composed hundreds of years ago still excite me. Many of us are thrilled by sitar music from India, Chopi xylophone music, and so on. Of course music is not appreciated exactly in the way that the composer intended. Even members of a single society do not receive their own music in the same way. However, our own experiences suggest that there are some possibilities of cross-cultural communication. I am convinced that at the level of deep structures in music there are elements that ___________________ , although they may not appear in the surface structures. * Venda: 벤다 인(人) ** Chopi: 초피부족 ① connect different social classes ② only appeal to humankind ③ are common to the human psyche ④ make us keep listening to music ⑤ make us feel peaceful
