2018

Middle East

Message from the Editors:

This is where I.B.Tauris’ publishing activities all began in 1983. As our flagship list, our mission is to publish dynamic titles that illuminate the Islamic World and Middle Eastern region, and help shape the field. Ranging from Current Affairs and History, to Gender Studies and Film we are proud to produce distinctive titles for scholars and general readers alike. Our 2018 catalogue introduces Frontline Turkey by Ezgi Basaran (p.5), which explains why the Kurds in Turkey are so central to the ongoing crisis in Syria and the Middle East. Readers will also find Nikolaos Van Dam’s Destroying a Nation (p.4) an essential text for understanding Syria’s recent history. We are delighted to welcome The Quest for Authority in Iran by Siavush Randjbar-Daemi (p.14) and to be publishing the first title in our new Gender and Islam series, Queer Muslims in Europe (p.31). For history, see details of the Early and Medieval Islamic World series, and for new books on religion, Wahhabism and the Rise of the New Salafists (p.32) promises vital new theological perspectives on the Wahhabi tradition. U.S. APPROACHES TO THE ARAB UPRISINGS International Relations and Democracy Promotion NEW Amentahru Wahlrab and Michael J. McNeal (Eds) University of Texas

The Modern History of Syria James Reilly University of Toronto

The Syrian state is less than 100 years old, but today it stands in ruins, shattered by brutal civil war. How did this happen? By charting Syria’s history over the last five centuries for the first time, James Reilly explores the fractious yet formative periods of Ottoman, Egyptian and French rule, and the ways -that these contributed to the rule of the Assad family; and to a civil war which produced the so-called Islamic State. Based on primary sources and recent historiography in English, French and Arabic, this is the essential book for understanding modern Syria and the Middle East. 312 PAGES 226 X 155MM SEPTEMBER 2018 9781784539610 HARDBACK £25.00 / $35.00

THE RAGE

The Vicious Circle of Islamist and FarRight Extremism NEW

Julia Ebner The early twenty-first century has been defined by a rise in Islamist radicalisation and a concurrent rise in far right extremism. This book explores the interaction between the ‘new’ far right and Islamist extremists and considers the consequences for the global terror threat. Julia Ebner argues that far right and Islamist extremist narratives – ‘The West is at war with Islam’ and ‘Muslims are at war with the West’ – complement each other perfectly, making the two extremes rhetorical allies and building a spiralling torrent of hatred – ‘The Rage’. Based on firsthand interviews, this book introduces readers to the world of reciprocal radicalisation and the hotbeds of extremism that have developed – with potentially disastrous consequences – in the UK, Europe and the US. 272 PAGES 198 X 129MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781788310321 PAPERBACK £11.99 / $18.00

REVOLTS AND THE MILITARY IN THE ARAB SPRING NEW

Through detailed exploration of events in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, Syria and Yemen, Sean Burns breaks down the concept of professionalism within the armed forces and demonstrates how variation in military structures determines their behaviour. THE FOREIGN OFFICE HANDBOOKS NEW The Middle East Sir George Prothero

Since Islamic State tore through Iraq and proclaimed a caliphate straddling the border with Syria, the Kurds have emerged as a lead actor in the global war against the extremist group. However, the story of the Kurdish fighters known as Peshmerga -- literally “those who confront death” -- is yet to be told. This book seeks to establish who they are, and what has motivated them to lay down their lives in one abortive revolt after another over the past century. It will trace the peshmerga’s ongoing and far from complete evolution from a rag-tag guerrilla force into a regular army. 256 PAGES 216 X 135MM AUGUST 2018 9781784538811 HARDBACK £17.99 / $25.00

DESTROYING A NATION NEW

The Civil War in Syria Nikolaos van Dam

Following the Arab Spring, Syria descended into civil and sectarian conflict. It has since become a fractured warzone which operates as a breeding ground for new terrorist movements including ISIS as well as the root cause of the greatest refugee crisis in modern history. In this important book, former Special Envoy of the Netherlands to Syria, Nikolaos van Dam, explains the recent history of Syria, covering the growing disenchantment with the Asad regime, the chaos of civil war and the fractures which led to an immense amount of destruction in the refined social fabric of what used to be the Syrian nation. Through an in-depth examination, van Dam traces political developments within the Asad regime and the various opposition groups from the Arab Spring to the present day, and provides a deeper insight into the conflict and the possibilities and obstacles for reaching a political solution. 256 PAGES 198 X 129MM JULY 2017 9781784537975 PAPERBACK £8.99 / $15.95

FRONTLINE TURKEY NEW

The Conflict at the Heart of the Middle East Ezgi Basaran St Antony’s College Oxford

Rather than a clash of civilisations, the West now faces revolts from the margins, driven by widening economic divisions, rising global elites and dangerous environmental constraints. As the balance of power starts to shift away from the West, this updated edition of Paul Rogers’ acclaimed book looks at the new challenges facing global security, and how we might start to address them. 272 PAGES 198 X 129MM JULY 2017 9781784538446 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $15.95

Turkey is on the front line of the war which is consuming Syria and the Middle East. Its role is complicated by the long-running conflict with the Kurds on their Syrian border – a war that has killed as many as 80,000 people over the last three decades. In its fight against ISIS, Turkey has declared war on western allies such as the Kurdish YPG – the military who rescued the Yezidis and fought with US backing in Kobane. Frontline Turkey shows how the Kurds’ relationship with Turkey is at the very heart of the Middle Eastern crisis, and documents, through front-line reporting, how Erdogan’s failure to bring peace is the key to understanding current events in Middle East. 224 PAGES 216 X 135MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781784538415 HARDBACK £17.99 / $25.00

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE MONGOLS George Lane NEW SOAS, University of London

The Mongol Empire was the mightiest land empire the world has ever seen. At its height, it was twice the size of Rome’s. It commanded a population of 100 million people, while the rule of Genghis Khan marched undefeated from the Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea. George Lane argues that the Mongols were not only subjugators who swept all before them, but one of the great organising forces of history. His book traces the rise of the Khan in 1206 to the dissolution of the empire in 1368 by the Ming Dynasty. He discusses the unification of the Turko-Mongol tribes, the establishment of an imperium whose Pax Mongolica held mastery over the Central Asian steppes; imaginative policies of religious pluralism; and the legacy of the Toluid Empire of Yuan China and Ilkhanate Iran. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM NOVEMBER 2017 9781780766058 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 9781780766065 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 I.B.TAURIS SHORT HISTORIES

THE LIFE OF THE RED SEA DHOW

A Cultural History of Seaborne Exploration in the Islamic World NEW Dionisius A. Agius University of Exeter

In two centuries of rule over Egypt and North Africa (969-1171CE), the Isma‘ili Fatimids threatened Sunni hegemony in the Arab heartlands, yet left few historiographical records. For the first time, Fozia Bora maps the survival of historiographical narratives from late Fatimid Egypt. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM MAY 2018 9781784537302 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 THE EARLY AND MEDIEVAL ISLAMIC WORLD

Dionisius A. Agius, one of the foremost scholars of Islamic material culture, offers a lucid and wide-ranging history of an iconic sea-faring vessel – the dhow – from medieval to modern times. While the history of global and seafaring exploration is more popular than ever, seaborne discovery from Islamic lands remains an understudied subject. Whether discussing trade and salt routes; shoals and wind patterns; spice harvest seasons; litanies and votive offerings to the sea; or the deep and resonant connection between language, memory and oral tradition, this is the first book to place the dhow in its full and remarkable cultural contexts. 304 PAGES 226 X 155MM JUNE 2017 9781848858060 HARDBACK £25 / $35

Evangelos Venetis (Translator) The first Iskandarnama, or ‘The Book of Alexander’, is the oldest prose version of the Alexander romance in the Persian tradition. Thought to have been written between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries by an unknown author, the lively narrative recasts Alexander as Iskandar, a Muslim champion – a king and prophet, albeit flawed but heroic, and remarkably appropriated to Islam. This new English translation of the under-studied text sheds fresh light onto the shape and structure of this vital document. 544 PAGES 244 X 172MM AUGUST 2017 9781784538798 HARDBACK £75.00 / $120.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES

Published in collaboration with the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean

As recent scholarship resoundingly attests, the medieval Mediterranean and Middle East bore witness to a prolonged period of flourishing intellectual and cultural diversity. Seeking to contribute to this ever-more nuanced and textured picture, The Early and Medieval Islamic World academic book series promotes innovative research on the period 500-1500 AD with the Islamic world, as it ebbed and flowed from Marrakesh to Palermo and Cairo to Kabul, as the central pivot.

SOCIAL CAPITAL AND WATER MANAGEMENT IN EGYPT

NEW

Dalia M. Gouda

T. Tvedt, University of Bergen, T. Oestigaard, University of Bergen, O. McIntyre & T. Kasse Woldesadik (Eds)

From the 1980s, billions of dollars were poured into irrigation improvement programmes in Egypt. These aimed at improving local Nile water management through the introduction of more water-efficient technology and by placing management of the improved systems in the hands of local water user associations. Dalia Gouda shows how the far-reaching social changes wrought at the village level in Egypt through the twentieth century rendered such a premise implausible at best and invalid at worst.

UNDERSTANDING IRAN

NEW

From Ancient Times to the Islamic Republic William Beeman University of Minnesota

Iran is rarely out of the media spotlight. Whether because of its nuclear ambitions, its confrontation with the US or the provocative rhetoric of its leadership, Iran demands attention. In this riveting book, William Beeman pries open the complex and multifaceted society that makes up Iran. Sweeping through its history, Beeman seeks to show how Iranian identity has been forged. Though Iran has been profoundly influenced by the experience of many invasions, its identity is firmly anchored in its deeply subtle literary and artistic heritage producing the most ethnically diverse yet culturally united country in the Middle East. This poetic ambiguity is felt in every aspect of Iranian social and political life today. 224 PAGES 216 X 138MM JUNE 2018 9781845119690 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $15.95

The Observations of a Mesopotamian Judge Al-Tanukhi Trans. by David S. Margoliouth, Intro by Robert Irwin

Entertaining, instructive, licentious and sometimes abhorrent, Tanukhi’s wonderful collection of anecdotes presents a rich and colourful mosaic of life and belief in the tenth-century Middle East. Always entertaining, and told with wit and eloquence, the result is a wonderful firstperson account of everyday life in medieval Baghdad and its surroundings.

POLICYMAKING IN THE GCC

State, Citizens and Institutions NEW

Mark C. Thompson, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals; and Neil Quilliam, Chatham House (Eds) The GCC is a major player in the post-2011 reordering of the Middle East. Despite the rise in prominence of individual Gulf states – especially Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and the growth of the GCC as a collective entity, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the actual mechanics of policy-making in the region. This book analyses the vital role that institutions are coming to play in shaping policy in the Gulf Arab states and shows how institutions are responding to citizens’ demands for better services and further empowerment. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784538842 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

GYPSIES IN CONTEMPORARY EGYPT NEW

On the Peripheries of Society Alexandra Parrs

The True Story of the Sinai Murders Saul Kelly King’s College London

Captain William Gill and his companions, the noted Arabist Professor Edward Palmer of Cambridge University and a young naval lieutenant, Harold Charrington, were killed in an ambush by Bedouin in the Sinai Desert in 1883. The gruesome murders shocked late-Victorian Britain, and led to pressure from the Queen, Parliament and the Press for the British government to launch a manhunt for the killers in a vast desert area, with mountainous terrain. This book traces the story behind the murder of the three men, uncovering the reason for their journey to the desert, the story of the murder itself as well as the backlash back home in England. It shines light on a fascinating, forgotten crime, as well as on early intelligence operations in the Middle East. 272 PAGES 226 X 155MM JANUARY 2018 9781784533410 HARDBACK £19.99 / $30.00 e ebook available

Spirit Possession, Music, and Healing Rituals in Egypt Hager El Hadidi

The April 6th Youth Movement began as a Facebook page that sought to mobilize young Egyptians’ support for striking industrial workers. Established in Egypt in 2008 when over 100,000 Facebook users joined, the movement consisted mainly of young Egyptians who had never been involved in politics before. The group’s unprecedented popularity meant that it eventually coalesced into a political movement and played a key role in the revolution against Hosni Mubarak’s rule. This book investigates the rise and fall of the April 6th Movement to explain the contentious dynamics of social activism in Egypt. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM OCTOBER 2017 9781784538668 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

Zisenwine offers an analysis of this authoritarian regime from its early days, to the attempts in the 2000s to reform economically (but not, crucially, politically) and the societal discontent that eventually led to the 2011 protests and Ben Ali’s ouster.

Kaya explores the balance the institution has to strike between the Islamic traditions of the Turkish population and the officially secular creed of the Turkish state. Kaya highlights the institutional mindsets of the Diyanet membership as well as evaluating its successes and failures as a governmental department that has to consistently operate within the context of Turkish society.

LIVING ISLAM

Women, Religion and the Politicization of Culture in Turkey Ayse Saktanber Middle East Technical University, Ankara

Encounters between Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam Alexandre Toumarkine, Laurent Mignon, Dilek Sarmis and Till Luge

How and why have women come to play a central role in the political project of Islamic revivalism and in the power struggles between Islamic and secular forces in Turkey? Ayse Saktanber examines the experiences of women for whom the discourse of modernity has no relevance and looks at the ways in which they have become crucial agents in the effort to make Islam a living social practice in a secular order.

MIGRATION FROM TURKEY TO SWEDEN

NEW

Integration, Belonging and Transnational Community Bahar Baser and Paul T. Levin (Eds)

Fatma Müge Göçek (Ed) University of Michigan The most significant political development of the post-Cold War era was, arguably, the diffusion of neoliberalism across the globe. This book now examines the emergence and consequences of neoliberalism in Turkey. The contributors look beyond the neoliberal cities of Istanbul and Ankara to take into account the rest of the country and the groups that are most negatively affected: such as the Kurds, women and migrants. Contested Spaces in Contemporary Turkey sheds new light on the societal processes that are re-shaping modern Turkey. 320 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784536107 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN TURKEY

TURKEY

NEW

An Economic Geography Aksel Ersoy University of Bristol

As Turkey positions itself for entry into the European Union it is vital that the country meets its national economic goals. A vital factor in achieving these will be the country’s regional economies and their associated economic policies. To date, however, many of the policy interventions adopted have been based on models drawn from developed economies and the outcome has raised a number of concerns. Are policy interventions drawn from advanced economies appropriate for transitional economies such as Turkey? Aksel Ersoy’s book is the first work to explore the dynamics of local and regional development in Turkey. In addition, he offers a new theoretical framework for understanding the local and regional dynamics of emerging and transitional economies more generally. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2017 9781784536060 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

FAITH AND FASHION IN TURKEY NEW Football in Turkey is a sport that encompasses politics, anger and resistance. Patrick Keddie takes us on a wild journey from the streets of Istanbul to the deserts of Anatolia. He meets gay referees facing death threats and Kurdish teams playing for their human rights. In doing so he lifts the lid on a new side to the story of modern Turkey. He also tells the stories of the scandalous ‘fixing’ of the Turkish first division, and sketches murky connections to the country’s leadership. 320 PAGES 216 X 135MM MARCH 2018 9781784538026 HARDBACK £16.99 / $28.00

CONSPIRACY THEORY IN TURKEY Politics and Protest in the Age of ‘Post-Truth’ Julian de Medeiros University of Kent NEW

From the Gezi protests to the attempted military coup, the concept of ‘post-truth’ plays a significant role in Turkish politics today. Examining the relationship between conspiracy theory and ‘post-truth’, this book sheds light on the strategies of political paranoia threatening to undermine the success of Turkey’s democratic model. As Turkish democracy continues to evolve with unpredictable outcomes, de Medeiros shows how the rise of paranoid politics constitutes part of a global trend towards post-truth narratives. He situates Turkish democracy as subject to a global resurgence of strongman leadership and antagonistic populism. 320 PAGES 216 X 138MM DECEMBER 2017 9781788311670 HARDBACK £59.00 / $95.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN TURKEY e ebook available

DEMOCRACY IN AFGHANISTAN The Golden Era of Reform and the Roots of Modern Conflict NEW Bahar Jalali, University of Arkansas

AMERICA IN AFGHANISTAN NEW

Foreign Policy and Decision Making from Bush to Obama Sharif Dorani

The decade of democratic reforms in Afghanistan, 1963-1973, is often viewed as a ‘golden era’ of stability and progress. Bahar Jalali demonstrates, however, that the roots of Afghanistan’s turbulent recent history can be traced back to precisely this period, when the swift implementation (and ultimate failure) of progressive reforms gave rise to extremist ideologies that would go on to become politically dominant over the next three decades. 336 PAGES 216 X 138MM MAY 2018 9781784538286 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF CENTRAL ASIAN STUDIES e ebook available

STATE FORMATION IN AFGHANISTAN NEW

A Theoretical and Political History Mujib Rahman Rahimi In order to distil the narrative of Afghanistan’s formation and early years, a Pashtun-centric version of history dominated the state’s history and the political process from 1880 to the 1970s. Since 1970, the ongoing crises in Afghanistan have opened the space for non-Pashtuns, including Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks, to form new definitions of identity, and call for the re-writing of the long-established narratives. 352 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784539498 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

For many years, Central Asia was the heartland of the mightiest military power on the planet. But after the fragmentation of the Mongol polity, the region began to decline. During the nineteenth century, the former territories of the great khans were overrun by Tsarist Russia. In the last volume of his acclaimed quartet, Christoph Baumer shows how China and Russia became the masters of their previous rulers. He suggests that, as traditional trade routes declined, it was the cold war between Imperial Russia and Great Britain which brought Central Asia back into play as a region of strategic importance. This epic history concludes with an assessment of the transition to independence of the Central Asian states and their struggle to contain radical Islamism. 352 PAGES 289 X 237 MM MAY 2018 9781788310499 HARDBACK £30.00 / $39.50

Gender, Islam and National Identity Munira Cheema University of Sussex After 9/11, the US campaign against al-Qaeda and the Taliban led to a surge of violence in Pakistan. This is the first book to cover all aspects of terrorism in Pakistan and to reveal the composition and ideology of TTP and its affiliates.

In the post-liberalisation period in Pakistan, television content significantly changed. This book looks at the different ways in which controversial issues relating to gender were broadcast on TV and explores how this impacted on Pakistani women. The author interviews the producers, writers and directors in the industry, as well as viewers, and explores the complex relationship between TV culture, gender and religious conservatism. The book contributes to debates about the role of media in the democratization of Muslim societies.

This book argues the dichotomy of ‘freedom of choice vs coercion’ is one that has not been challenged and seeks to expand the horizon of the debates concerning body power, agency and coercion. 352 PAGES 216 X 138MM SEPTEMBER 2018 9781784534585 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

GENDER JUSTICE AND LEGAL REFORM IN EGYPT NEW

Negotiating Muslim Family Law Mulki al-Sharmani

Orientalist Depictions of Arab Sexuality Feras Alkabani University of Sussex

30

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Arab-speaking regions of the Ottoman Empire saw a crucial change in attitudes towards sexuality. Notions of ‘respectability’ and ‘sexual morality’ were being transformed in literary and cultural discourses, a shift related to the gradual rise in anti-Ottoman Arab nationalism. However, contemporary Orientalists were oblivious to aspects of this cultural reconfiguration. While accounts of male-love poetry were being expurgated from the Arab literary heritage, elaborate narratives of Oriental homoerotic desire characterise the encounters of both Burton and Lawrence with the Arab East.

Drawing on an extensive four-year field study, Al-Sharmani highlights the complexities and mixed impacts of legal reform, not only as a mechanism of claiming gender rights but also as a system of meanings that shape, destabilize, or transform gender norms and practices. 208 PAGES 230 X 150MM AUGUST 2017 9789774167751 HARDBACK £29.95 / THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

Iran’s continued retention of discriminatory laws stands in stark contrast to the advances Iranian women have made in other spheres since the 1979 Revolution. Leila Alikarami here aims to determine the extent to which the actions of women’s rights activists have led to a significant change in their legal status in Iran. 320 PAGES 216 X 138MM FEBRUARY 2018 9781784533168 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES

This book foregrounds the lived experiences of queer Muslims who migrated to Belgium because of their sexuality and queer Muslims who are the children of economic migrants. Based on extensive fieldwork, Wim Peumans examines how queer Muslims negotiate silence and disclosure around their sexuality, maintain transcultural relationships and understand their religious beliefs. The book reveals the interrelated issues involved in migration, sexuality and religion and challenges the existing heteronormativity of Migration Studies. In focusing on people with different migration histories and ethnic backgrounds, this book provides a much-needed, more nuanced perspective. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788310789 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00

WOMEN AND PUBLIC SPACE IN TURKEY NEW

Gender, Modernity and the Urban Experience Selda Tuncer, Yuzuncu Yil University

Turkey’s process of twentieth century ‘modernisation’ was rapid. New social and legal reforms were institutionalised, and political changes resulted in a more liberated society. This text provides an understanding of women’s experiences of this modernisation between 1950 and 1980, when their participation in urban public life expanded through higher education and employment. Selda Tuncer examines how women perceived and experienced urban public space and social relations. 336 PAGES 216 X 138MM JANUARY 2018 9781784537524 HARDBACK £62 / $99 LIBRARY OF MODERN TURKEY e ebook available

Islam, Activism and Equality in Britain Khadijah Elshayyal, University of Edinburgh NEW

Revisionist Religion, Agnosticism and Disbelief in the Modern Arab World Ralph M Coury (Ed)

In the last fifty years, Muslim identity politics has worked to preserve religious identity, lobby the state and offer concerted responses to the political establishment. This is the first book to critically chart the national and global factors influencing the political mobilisation of British Muslim activists as Muslims. From analysing the establishment of regional organisations after 1960, Khadijah Elshayyal traces the changes of thought, direction and method for Muslim identity politics.

ORIENTALIST LIVES

NEW

Western Artists in the Middle East, 1830 – 1920 James Parry

In one of the most remarkable artistic pilgrimages in history, the nineteenth century saw scores of Western artists head to the Middle East. Based on his research in museums, libraries, archives, galleries, and private collections across the world, James Parry traces these journeys of cultural and artistic discovery. From the early pioneer David Roberts through the heyday of leading stars such as Jean-Léon Gérôme and Frederick Arthur Bridgman, to Orientalism’s post-1900 decline, he describes how these traveling artists prepared for their expeditions, coped with working in unfamiliar and challenging surroundings, engaged with local people, and then took home to their studios the memories, sketches, and collections of artifacts necessary to create the works for which their audiences clamored. Excerpts from letters and diaries, including little-known accounts and previously unpublished material, as well as photographs, sketches, and other original illustrations, bring alive the impressions, experiences, and careers of the Orientalists and shed light on how they created what are now once again recognized as masterpieces of art. 240 PAGES 210 X 240MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9789774168352 HARDBACK £45.00 / THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

An Architectural Life Leïla el-Wakil (Ed) University of Geneva

It sparked new developments and transformations in content and genre and laid open challenge to the powerful role traditionally played by the country’s ministry of culture in the field of artistic expression. This book offers a timely and much-needed survey of key realms of cultural production in Egypt since January 2011. They show how this explosion of cultural expression aligned with the change in people’s relationship to power and authority that took place after the uprising and yet how this cultural resurgence had its roots in political struggles that predated 2011. 352 PAGES 230 X 150MM AUGUST 2017 9789774167584 PAPERBACK £19.95 / THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

MIDDLE EAST 2018

When he first showed up at Captain Ali’s run-down boxing club, Said was mocked for his bourgeois accent then humiliated in the ring. After barely a year of training, he is consumed by the world of boxing. As his star rises, Said is faced with the challenger he came for, but at what cost? Representations of Power and Resistance in Gaza Atef Alshaer University of Westminster

Language is an important tool and symbol of Palestinian national identity. From resistance to Israel as an occupying power, to a mark of distinction from rival factions, language in Palestine reflects the upheaval in their society. This book shows how language plays a role in the construction of national identities, and how socio-political conditions have shaped the Arabic of Gaza and the Palestinian territories as a speech community 320 PAGES 216 X 138MM MARCH 2018 9781784536046 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF WRITTEN CULTURE AND IDENTITY

FOLKSONGS FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF IRAN NEW

Culture, Poetics and Everyday Philosophies Erika Friedl Western Michigan University

In the long literary history of the Middle East, the notion of ‘the beloved’ has been a central trope in poetry and prose. From the preIslamic ‘Udhri (romantic unrequited love), to erotic same-sex love in thirteenth century texts, divine Sufi reflections on the topic, and postrevolutionary love encounters in Iran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia – this book connects the affective and cultural with the political and the obscene. In focusing on the diverse manifestations of love and tropes of the lover/beloved binary, this book foregrounds what is often regarded as a ‘taboo subject’ in the region.

In Iran, folksongs offer an intimate portrait of a vanishing era. Based on fieldwork that began in 1965, Erika Friedl’s research on the folklore in Boir Ahmad represents the best-documented modern folklore compendium on an Iranian tribe.

The Last Ottoman Princess Murat Bardakçı, translated by Meyzi Baran

Travels and Studies in the Shadow of Ararat H. F. B. Lynch

Twice a princess, twice exiled, Neslishah Sultan had an eventful life. When she was born in Istanbul in 1921, cannons were fired – after all, she was an imperial princess. Sixteen years later on her marriage to Prince Abdel Moneim, the son of the last khedive of Egypt, she became a princess of the Egyptian royal family. Based on original documents and extensive personal interviews, this account of one woman’s extraordinary life is also the story of the end of two powerful dynasties thirty years apart.

THE LAND BEYOND NEW

A Thousand Miles on Foot through the Heart of the Middle East Leon McCarron

Tamerlane ruled over one of the largest empires in history – spanning between Syria, China, Russia and India. He was a ruthless conqueror, feared across continents and a superb military tactician. Yet he was also a patron of the arts, and turned his capital, Samarkand, into a great city. Arabshah’s contemporary biography of Tamerlane was written soon after the events described. It is the major historical source on a great historical conqueror. 376 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 2017 9781784531706 HARDBACK £75 / $120

There are many reasons why it might seem unwise to walk, mostly alone, through the Middle East. That, in part, is exactly why Leon McCarron did it. From Jerusalem, McCarron followed a series of wild hiking trails that trace ancient trading and pilgrimage routes and traverse some of the most contested landscapes in the world. The Land Beyond is a journey through time, from the quagmire of current geopolitics to the original ideals of the faithful, through the layers of history, culture and religion that have shaped the Holy Land. But at its heart, it is the story of people, not politics and of the connections that can bridge seemingly insurmountable barriers. 288 PAGES 216 X 135MM AUGUST 2017 9781788310567 HARDBACK £16.99 / $19.50
