Welcome to the

2016 World of Bluegrass!

Welcome to the 2016 World of Bluegrass! So many people have been involved in planning this year’s week of bluegrass, which is like no other in the world. We are all excited about what is in store for everyone attending. I want to personally thank the many volunteers who offered their time and service to make a big impact on numerous committees, the IBMA Board of Directors, and the amazing staff who have worked tirelessly to pull together an exceedingly complex series of events throughout this week. Last year’s “hurricane party” brought out the best in everyone there. First and foremost, it brought out the best in our Raleigh partners. While they have been terrific all along, the commitment they demonstrated last year to move every aspect of World of Bluegrass indoors within 48 hours was nothing short of spectacular. They have clearly shown our bluegrass community that we are a high priority as the city’s signature event. For this year, we are hoping and planning for a return to normal weather so we can again fill the city with great bluegrass music and fun. We have more than 200 bands scheduled to play during the week to an expected crowd of over 150,000. The Red Hat stage performances are our signature event with 16 of the top names in bluegrass scheduled, including unique col-

laborations and a fun celebration of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s 50 years of music. We certainly owe them our appreciation for the impact their “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” album had on our music. If that isn’t enough, seven StreetFest stages offer a diverse selection of leading artists throughout the weekend too! With everything combined, there is more bluegrass music available to fans and professionals than any other event held anywhere in the world. Since the IBMA is a professional association with a major focus of connecting and educating bluegrass professionals, we continue to work to deliver the best possible seminar content and artist showcasing. The Education, Songwriting, Talent Buyer, and Leadership Bluegrass committees spent considerable time and effort to elevate the level of the conference experience this year. There is something for every level of professional. Please scan the schedule and invest in your career by making it a priority to attend these important sessions. This year we are also fortunate and excited to have a group of seven international event producers/promoters attending from countries such as China, Lebanon, and Mexico. Their interest in bluegrass provides our artists an opportunity to seek exciting international touring. They will be checking out our showcase bands as well as those on the Red Hat and StreetFest stages.

The awards luncheons on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by the ever-popular Awards Show Thursday evening, are important to recognize the many people in bluegrass who are making a huge impact. The awards nominees range from emerging talent to those nominated for Entertainer of the Year. Please don’t miss these celebration experiences. We hope you have a productive, music-filled, and fun week! All the best,

Paul Schiminger

QUESTIONS?

SEMINARS

Throughout the week, reach out to our volunteers at the registration desk or working throughout the conference. If they don’t know the answer, they can find someone who does.

Seminars start on time – please come a little early. We ask that you sit near the front when you can; we’ve hired photographers to document the conference, and we want the photos to accurately represent how engaging our panels are. You’ll receive an evaluation at the beginning of every seminar. Please fill these out so we know what to keep and how to improve in future years. Seminar doors will be closed while in session so we ask that you enter quietly if you arrive late. Please be advised that schedules and presenters are subject to change.

ORIENTATION

Is it your first time at IBMA? We’ve got you covered. Hang out with a group of veterans to ask questions, plan your schedule, get tips, and get acclimated. Coffee drinking optional but highly recommended. Come get your bearings with Kimber Ludiker (Della Mae), Christina Crowley (Crossover Touring), Jeremy Darrow (Front Country) and Ken Irwin (Rounder).

keynote address Marian Leighton-Levy Bluegrass, Community and Change Tuesday Sept 27, 2016 | 4:00pm - 5:30pm | 4th Floor Ballroom Marian Leighton-Levy has spent her entire adult life in the record business, having co-founded Rounder with partners Ken Irwin and Bill Nowlin the year she graduated from college. From a three-person collective, Rounder grew to encompass thousands of artists over a broad range of music in its nearly 50 years of existence. She focused her efforts in the areas of publicity, promotion and artist relations as well as the overall responsibilities of running an independent record label.

In addition to its own releases, beginning in 1970, the Rounder founders sold roots recordings from numerous labels, ran a record distributor, and operated a popular mail-order company. Leighton-Levy, along with Irwin and Nowlin, will be inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame at the

International Bluegrass Awards on Thursday, September 29, 2016.

Through the decades, Rounder has released ground-breaking, influential albums that have echoed and shaped the evolution of bluegrass music. Artists that have called Rounder home include Norman Blake, J.D. Crowe & the New South, Tony Trischka, Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, Sam Bush, Ricky Skaggs, Rhonda Vincent, Claire Lynch, Dailey & Vincent, the Grascals, Hazel Dickens, the SteelDrivers, Jerry Douglas, the Earls of Leicester, Steep Canyon Rangers, the Gibson Brothers, Doyle Lawson and Alison Krauss, among others. The label has amassed a catalog of more than 3,000 titles and their artists have garnered more than 45 Grammy Awards.

Leighton-Levy has lobbied for the Performance Rights Act which proposes that everyone who performs on a record be paid for the use of their work (currently only songwriters are paid a royalty fee) and has served on the Advisory Board of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, the Blues Foundation in Memphis and the board of the International Bluegrass Music Museum. She is a current board member of the IBMA. In addition to her work in the field of music, she is devoted to saving old houses, and is pursuing further graduate studies in literary theory/ criticism and psychoanalysis.

“They do things with fiddles you wouldn’t expect” -NPR All Songs Considered. “The Newest and Most Promising Voices in Americana”. “…A dynamic musical stew that covers a wide spectrum of acoustic-based roots music, hitting on old-time, folk and bluegrass, all delivered with a dash of rock and roll spunk.” -American Songwriter Magazine. 10 String Symphony is two 5-string fiddle players and veteran sidemen of Nashville’s music: Rachel Baiman, former Illinois state old-time fiddle champion, and classically trained violinist Christian Sedelmyer, who tours with the Jerry Douglas Band. Their mission statement is as clear as it is expansive: Two fiddles. Two Voices. Epic music. Instead of showcasing technical virtuosity, “Weight of the World,” the band’s latest recording due out Oct. 23rd, is raw, intimate, designed to move rather than impress its listeners. 10 String Symphony’s musical prowess and chemistry are on display for those in the know, but a deep listen reveals these flourishes are in service of reaching the listener emotionally. All Things Music describes the band’s sound as a “new take on old ideas”.

The Annie Lou band is fronted by Vancouver Island-based songwriter/instrumentalist Anne Louise Genest, who walks with the spirit of an old storyteller, creating songs steeped in the flavors of old-time mountain, Appalachian, traditional country and bluegrass music. With guitar and banjo in hand, she has spent years chronicling the rural lifepaths of Canada, writing into song the tales of the hard-hit, hard-won victories of these everymen and women. Her songs range from rousing to poignant, mapping a homescape of hard-drinking grandmas, rural dancehalls, small towns, and big cities. Genest’s vocal warmth blends the sweet tones of Kate and Anna McGarrigle with the raw emotion of Hazel Dickens. A Juno and multiple WCMA nominee, Annie Lou’s most recent recording is “Tried and True”. On tour, the Annie Lou roster is rounded out with seasoned Canadian acoustic champs Andrew Collins on mandolin, fiddle, and vocals, Sarah Hamilton on fiddle and vocals, and Max Heineman on upright bass and vocals. The Annie Lou Band is a tight ensemble offering superb musicianship and joyful energy.

With striking three-part harmonies and masterful instrumentation, Bill and the Belles breathe new life into early country music. At the foothills of the Blue Ridge and the forefront of old time music, Bill and the Belles (Johnson City, TN) further the music traditions of their region. Through sentimental Southern ballads, popular Tin Pan Alley songs and regional fiddle breakdowns, their show celebrates country music’s original diversity. They play alongside America’s top country and roots artists, including Hot Rize, the Gibson Brothers, and Larry Sparks, as resident band for Radio Bristol’s program Farm and Fun Time, and have brought their show to the audiences of television and radio broadcasts, and several major festivals around the country. Kris Truelsen, Grace Van’t Hof, Kalia Yeagle, and Karl Zerfas bring an uplifting show full of humor, high spirits, and all-around revelry. Their rare musical connection and deep love for the music is clear, their excitement contagious. Bill and the Belles are eager to share their music with new audiences.

Winners of the 2015 Spiral Earth Award for Best Debut, Cardboard Fox is an exciting new four piece with a fast growing fan base. All four musicians have their roots in bluegrass music but their collective influences reach much further and this shows in their music. Formed in late 2013 in Bath, England, the band features the sibling harmonies of Charlotte and Laura Carrivick (the Carrivick Sisters) on guitar/vocals and fiddle/vocals respectively, the extraordinary talents of young mandolin player Joe Tozer and the driving and technically demanding double bass playing and harmony vocals of John Breese. Focusing on original songs with a strong pop sensibility and energetic live shows, this is a group of musicians who are very, very excited about what this lineup can create and that’s what makes this acoustic quartet so special. The band plans to follow up the success of their EP with a full length album due for release in 2016.

Carolina Blue

The Andrew Collins Trio

Hackensaw Boys

High Plains Jamboree

Booking: Leslie Brown, Southern Belle Booking

Booking: Andrew Collins

Booking: Cassie Michel, Free Dirt Records

Booking: Brennen Leigh

Carolina Blue is a Brevard, NC based band whose roots run deep in the tradition of Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs. The band was formed in 2007 after the release of the album “Nothing So Blue” by Bobby Powell and Tim Jones. Carolina Blue won the South Carolina state bluegrass championship at RenoFest in 2011. The band’s repertoire consists of original songs including Tim Jones’ “Spring Will Bring Flowers”, which was recorded by 2014 IBMA entertainers of the year Balsam Range, and many bluegrass favorites, and gospel too, all done in the traditional style. Available recordings are Bobby Powell & Tim Jones “Nothing So Blue” (2007 produced by Steep Canyon Ranger Woody Platt and featuring Platt, Graham Sharp, Mike Guggino, Shannon Whitworth, and Roy Chapman) as well as “Carolina Blue Live at Renofest” (2011), and most recently released album “Goin’ Home Today” (2016). Band members are Bobby Powell on guitar and vocals, Tim Jones on mandolin and vocals, Reese Combs on upright bass and vocals, Seth Rhinehart on banjo and Emma Best on fiddle and vocals.

For fifteen years Andrew Collins has been at the forefront of a Canadian acoustic movement, blazing new ground in modern roots music. As a solo recording artist, and a founding member of the Creaking Tree String Quartet and the Foggy Hogtown Boys, he has earned an impressive reputation, winning six Canadian Folk Music Awards and five Juno nominations. In keeping with his ongoing exploration of new acoustic music, Andrew has teamed up with Mike Mezzatesta and James McEleney to form the Andrew Collins Trio. Committed to innovation, they join forces to create an original body of work blurring the lines between bluegrass, jazz, old-time, folk, Celtic and classical. Invoking the past while evoking a distinct, fresh voice, Andrew’s original music is joyful and innovative, with a deep respect for what has come before. Matching virtuosity with versatility, Andrew and Mike deftly trade off on mandolin, mandola, mandocello, fiddle and guitar, supported by James’ adroit bass playing. Their dynamic show is enhanced with their broad repertoire of songs and instrumentals, and by Andrew’s elegant lead vocals and James’ soaring harmonies.

“Charismo”, Hackensaw Boys’ 11-track album, feels like the zenith release of the band’s 17 years, gathering their diverse life experiences and myriad roots influences and crystallizing them into a magnum opus on the Hackensaw way of being. Traditional Appalachian and Delta music lay the groundwork, injected with a heavy dose of the contemporary, good-times-roll kind of spit and vinegar the band has become known for. Produced by Larry Campbell-who has lent his talents to Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, and countless others-”Charismo” sees the band reeled in and slightly refined. The songs (by longtime Hackensaws David Sickmen and Ferd Moyse), tinged with scrappy resilience, spin tales of everyday, working class struggles and triumphs. The Hackensaw’s somewhat casual, porch-front aesthetic is sharpened around the edges, focusing in on the simple beauty of their melodies and the earnestness in their delivery. Hackensaw Boys don’t let down on their signature everpresent, feel-good energy, always moving forward like a mighty wheel turning, continuing to spread the (not quite) bygone spirit of downhome music to old and new audiences alike.

High Plains Jamboree is a super group of four stellar singer-songwriter-musicians (Beth Chrisman, Simon Flory, Noel McKay and Brennen Leigh) based in Austin Texas. Featuring three-part harmony, fiddle, upright bass, acoustic guitar and mandolin, the foursome already boasts national and international tours, has had music covered by Grammy winning artists, and is working on their first collaborative album.

The Honey Dewdrops

Hot Buttered Rum

Booking: David Salada, The Sparrow Agency

Booking: Phil Einsohn, Sweetwine Group

Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish share more than most couples. As the Honey Dewdrops, they share stages from venues to festivals across North America, stretches of rolling, infinite roadway, and a lot of songs; they share one mic and a hunger to pay attention to what endures. With tight harmonies and a musical ensemble that includes clawhammer banjo, mandolin and guitars, the effect is to leave listeners with only what matters: the heart of the song and clarity over ornamentation. After a year and a half of living on the road, Laura and Kagey now call Baltimore, MD home and it’s where they wrote and recorded their fourth full-length album “Tangled Country” (2015) on Randm Records. Acoustic Guitar Magazine describes the set of songs as “a handcrafted sound centered on swarming harmonies and acoustic guitars that churn like a paddlewheel and shimmer like heat waves on the highway.” And like their stage performance, these new songs rock and reel, and then they console you when you come back down.

“Stunning instrumental and vocal virtuosity.” – Relix Magazine.“ Few things rejuvenate the soul like a warm fireside drink after an exhausting day in the snow. Hot Buttered Rum has that effect. Their original songs are instantly familiar and inviting, and their easygoing versions of timeless classics (the Beatles, Hank Williams) belie the intricacy of the arrangements.” –San Francisco Chronicle. Hot Buttered Rum’s three songwriters — Aaron Redner, Nat Keefe and Erik Yates — spin tales about the good times, the bad times, the roads in between, and belt them from the heart in three-part harmony. Bryan Horne’s athletic standup bass and Lucas Carlton’s tasteful percussion combine with the acoustic instruments to create what is California’s own acoustic music. The group’s onstage chemistry fuels the lovefest that is a live HBR show. Hot Buttered Rum has played with Phil Lesh, Chris Thile, Brett Dennen, and Robert Earl Keen, been produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Mike Marshall, and Tim Bluhm, and played Telluride, Newport, Bonnaroo, Strawberry, Hardly Strictly, String Summit, Grey Fox, and many more.

J2B2 (John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band) Booking: Jason Henke J2B2, an all-star bluegrass supergroup, features four legendary, award-winning musicians: John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen on banjo, acoustic guitar and vocals; Mark Fain on bass; and Patrick Sauber on acoustic guitar and vocals. Delivering bluegrass like it’s never been heard before, the band’s shows have received stellar reviews for a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock), and seasoned showmanship. Kaia Kater

The Lil’ Smokies

The Loose Strings Band

Hannah Shira Naiman

Booking: Martha Stracener Dantzic

Booking: Phil Einsohn, Sweetwine Group

Booking: Teresa Nale

Booking: Hannah Naiman

Kaia Kater is lauded for being one of the youngest performers in the roots scene, and at 22 years old, there’s not much arguing her progeny. But what’s special is that she’s blowing up the roots music scene in spite of her age, not because of it. Her old-time banjo-picking skills, deft arrangements, and songwriting abilities have landed her in the national spotlight on both Canadian and American soil. Kaia’s individualized approach to the traditional music of Canada and America is fully grounded in a deep respect for the genre. As she traces the connections between the two countries, and between the past and present, Kaia Kater finds the pulse that runs through the Appalachian Mountains.

With roots submerged in the thick buttery mud of traditional bluegrass, The Lil’ Smokies have sonically blossomed into a leading player in the progressive acoustic sphere. This Missoula, MT quintet has been playing to an evergrowing fan base for 6 years. They won the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass Festival band competition, were nominated for a 2014 IBMA Momentum Band of the Year Award, and won the 2013 Northwest String Summit Band Competition. Blending traditional bluegrass, newgrass, innumerable unique originals, sheer raw energy, and exquisite musicianship, The Lil’ Smokies weave seamlessly through genres. Sharing the stage with Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Keller Williams, Greensky Bluegrass, The Travellin’ McCourys, Sam Bush Band, and Infamous Stringdusters, the Smokies have played Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival, Bozeman Bluegrass Fest, Sandpoint Summer Fest, Wintergrass, Northwest Folklife Festival and Northwest String Summit. The Lil’ Smokies are Andy Dunnigan (dobro), Scott Parker (upright bass), Matt Cornette (banjo), Cameron Wilson (mandolin) and Matt Rieger (guitar).

Galax, Virginia’s all-girl group the Loose Strings Band (LSB), ranging in age from 15-22, are known in the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond for tight vocal harmonies and sweet rhythms. For nine years they’ve played bluegrass conventions, weddings, benefits, churches, and festivals. Once a youth band, LSB placed 8th in the adult competition at the 80th Galax Fiddlers Convention. They’ve played MerleFest and competed at SPBGMA, finishing in 7th. They have played in Alabama, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, and of course their home state of Virginia. The girls are also excited for the PBS televised show Song of the Mountains at the famous Lincoln Theater to air this year, they were fortunate to get to do a live show last year, and will be performing there again this year. Their newest 10-song CD, “Journey with No End”, features 7 originals. They could not do it without everyone’s support and hope to leave their audience with enjoyment and pleasure from each performance.

In the unlikely metropolis of Toronto, Ontario, many miles from the hills of Appalachia, young Hannah Shira is snuggly tucked in bed, light switched off, door gently closed— just down the hall, her parents’ old-time string band practice is about to begin. Today, the pulse of that music radiates in her original banjo-driven songs. Her 1st album, “Tether My Heart” (#6 on the US Folk DJ charts) was the culmination of her musical upbringing and her own explorations into the themes of traditional folk. Positive reviews show critics agreeing that Hannah Shira’s songs “could easily be taken as being traditional, such is her mastery of the genre...” (John Atkins, fRoots Magazine). In 2014, Hannah Shira studied Appalachian fiddle tunes, flatfoot dancing, and ballads in Virginia and West Virginia, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts. This fall Hannah Shira Naiman records her 2nd album, “Know The Mountain”, a collection of new compositions. Hannah performs solo or with a band including Rosalyn Dennett (from Winnipeg famed band “Oh My Darling), and her father, renowned banjo player, Arnie Naiman.

Missy Raines & The New Hip

Old Salt Union

Red Wine

Run Boy Run

Booking: Mollie Farr, Lost Buffalo Artists

Booking: Katie Keller

Booking: Mike Drudge, Class Act Entertainment

Booking: Herschel Freeman Agency

Red Wine, one of Europe’s most important bands, has been playing their style of traditional and contemporary bluegrass, country, gospel, and swing since 1978. They’ve played international festivals and concerts in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, Wales, Holland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Austria. Red Wine has toured the USA regularly since 1995, playing Bean Blossom, Uncle Pen’s Memorial Day, Walnut Valley, Strawberry, Poppy Mountain, Wind Gap, Hardly Strictly, ROMP Fest, Wintergrass, Delaware Valley, Grey Fox, the Mountain Song Festival, and many editions of IBMA’s “World of Bluegrass”, as well as Terry Herd’s Bluegrass Radio Network, Katy Daley’s Radio Show, and Michael Johnathon’s Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour. Following the huge success of their 30th anniversary celebration concert in Genova in 2008, Red Wine started a new yearly adventure in 2009, the Red Wine Bluegrass Party, with international guests like Tim O’Brien, Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Peter Rowan, and The Kruger Brothers.

Existing comfortably in the tension between tradition and the musical frontier, Tucson 5-piece Run Boy Run blends bluegrass, folk and the old timey American vernacular. Their newest album “Something to Someone” was praised by Performer Magazine, All Music Guide, PopMatters, The Guardian, and others. The band, who counts Garrison Keillor and renowned Irish fiddler Kevin Burke among their growing legion of fans, is brother and sister Matt Rolland (fiddle, guitar) and Grace Rolland (cello, vocals), sisters Bekah Sandoval Rolland (fiddle, vocals) and Jen Sandoval (mandolin, vocals) and bass player Jesse Allen. Three strong female voices weave a tapestry of sound, and the awardwinning fiddlers cut a path for a tightly formed rhythmic front. Winning Pickin’ In The Pines’ band contest, playing Telluride and NPR’s ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ (twice, plus having Keillor pen their debut album’s liner notes), Run Boy Run has been making fans across the U.S. with their open-ended musical approach and dynamic stage presence, and will take that live show back across the country coast to coast this summer and fall.

“Raines’ vocals bring a gorgeous, nurturing confidence.” -No Depression. “A seductive amalgam of folk, country, bluegrass, and rock, recalling the earliest platters by Lucinda Williams and Rosanne Cash.” -ICON Magazine. “Raines is not only a superb bassist but also an excellent singer, with a matter-of-fact, low-key delivery that’s sometimes hushed, sometimes seductive, sometimes channeling a simmering unease.” -New York Music Daily. With a smoky, seductive alto, 7 Time IBMA Bass Player of the Year Missy Raines heads up the New Hip, a quartet covering broad territory. The compass is set by Raines, planted right in the center of the stage directing with her bass every bit as much as she’s playing it. Missy’s 3rd Compass Records album -and her first all-original project- is due out this fall and features songs of home and family, and loss of both; of how faith and loyalty are tested in life. With Jake Stargel on guitar/vocals, David Benedict on mandolin/vocals, Cody Martin on percussion. The sounds are lush, the groove thick, and the songs memorable.

Old Salt Union is known for playing music by their own rules. While not complete rebels, they are certainly thinking about the future of music. They find influence in The Del McCoury Band and Sam Bush, and draw inspiration from Bill Evans, Danny Elfman, Punch Brothers. Their ability to stretch the boundaries of traditional bluegrass music, incorporating in-depth musical arrangements, a catchy hook, and uncanny pop sensibility, makes Old Salt Union special, a new generation of bluegrass in the industry. Their debut album “Western Skies” in 2013 was followed by extensive touring and their 2014 album, “Bridge”. They’ve won the STL Riverfront Times “Best Bluegrass Band” in 2013, “Best Country Band” in 2014, and made appearances at Bluegrass Underground, Music City Roots, The John Hartford Memorial Festival, ROMP, Wakarusa, LouFest, Stagecoach, and Yonder Mountain String Band’s Harvest Festival; sharing the stage with The Del McCoury Band, The Travelin’ McCoury’s, Sam Bush, Leftover Salmon, Jeff Austin Band, Greensky Bluegrass, Ricky Skaggs, and more – and no ma’am, they ain’t stopping yet.

Valerie Smith’s unique style has rocked the bluegrass world for almost two decades with national and international tours, acclaimed recordings, and Grammy, IBMA and Dove Award nominations. Val’s impressive vocals and expansive range prompted NPR host Dave Higgs to note, “She can be sassy, sultry, siren-like, sweet, smooth, soothing and smoldering---sometimes during the span of just one song!” An award-winning bluegrass/American roots artist and songwriter based in Bell Buckle, TN, Smith’s hit debut single, “Red Clay Halo,” climbed the Bluegrass Unlimited, Country Music and Americana reporting charts, receiving five years’ heavy radio airplay and a spot in BU’s Top 60 Songs of the Decade. VS&LP created a “Bluegrass in the Schools” program for IBMM and also presents an “American Roots Music” program here and overseas. They have appeared on television including Reno’s Old Time Country Music, Bluegrass Underground, and Song of the Mountains. Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike, with Hall of Famer Tom Gray on bass, are audience pleasers and skilled musicians: expect to be inspired, amused and thoroughly entertained.

Steep Ravine’s soulful sound takes roots music in compelling new directions, enthralling audiences by fusing elements of folk-rock, bluegrass, and jazz into their uniquely Californian sound. They are songwriter Simon Linsteadt (guitar, lead vocals), Jan Purat (violin, vocals), bassist Alex Bice (bass, vocals) and percussionist Jeff Wilson. Steep Ravine has toured extensively throughout the country, releasing two records of all original material. Following their humble beginnings playing at a Hawaiian barbecue spot in Santa Cruz and busking in the BART Metro Stations of San Francisco, Steep Ravine quickly gained a following in the Bay Area and throughout the west. After the release of their debut record “Trampin’ On”, the band went on several national tours, including notable performances at High Sierra Music Festival, Four Corners Folk Festival, Outside Lands, and Strawberry Music Festival. In 2015, Steep Ravine released their second record “The Pedestrian”, diving deeper into new musical terrain.

Firmly planted in Asheville, NC’s thriving roots music scene, Tellico is well schooled in bluegrass but with an unbridled organic “Appalachiacana” sound, combining some of the finest voices, songs and instrumental prowess in North Carolina and beyond. With Anya Hinkle’s and Stig Stiglets’ committed, authentic vocals alloyed with Aaron Ballance’s flowing and soaring dobro and Jed Willis’ textured and expressive mandolin, the quartet is rooted in the mountain music they grew up with while pushing tradition into a modern Americana sound aesthetic. Tellico independently released their debut album “Relics and Roses” on June 2, 2015. The album features the singing and songwriting of Anya Hinkle (guitar, fiddle) and Stig Stiglets (bass), and showcases Aaron Ballance on dobro and pedal and lap steel and Jed Willis on mandolin and clawhammer banjo. Guitar virtuoso Jon Stickley (Jon Stickley Trio) produced the album and makes a few guest appearances on guitar and drums. “Relics and Roses” is the first release since three of Tellico’s members regrouped after recording four records with the Asheville-based bluegrass band Dehlia Low.

Five highly acclaimed acoustic musicians join for this unique musical experience. Featuring Tim Carter, Babs Lamb, Matt Flinner, Tim May and Adam Chaffins.

Raw, soulful, and with plenty of swagger, Town Mountain’s palpable chemistry (and individual artistry) are on display, with Robert Greer on vocals and guitar, Jesse Langlais on banjo and vocals, Bobby Britt on fiddle, Phil Barker on mandolin and vocals, and Adam Chaffins on bass. 2013 winners of IBMA Momentum Awards for Performance Band and Vocalist of the Year (Greer), Town Mountain has earned raves for their hard-driving sound, their in-house songwriting and the honky-tonk edge that permeates their exhilarating live performances, whether in a packed club or at a soldout festival. Notes Greer, “It’s not supposed to be perfect but does it have soul!” Adds Langlais, ”We are taking a piece of what Bill Monroe’s band did in order to make our own bluegrass band. That’s just inevitable. But he borrowed from all these other genres, too – rock ‘n’ roll, country music, ScotsIrish fiddle music.”

Denver-based Trout Steak Revival has earned a place in the mountain states bluegrass scene, performing to sold-out audiences, winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, placing in the 2012 Rockygrass Band Competition, and even winning an Emmy Award for a soundtrack with Rocky Mountain PBS. Their most recent album, “Brighter Every Day,” was released in March 2015. Produced by Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters, the album has received radio play and acclaim both in Colorado and worldwide. Soulful narratives. Heartfelt songwriting. Tightlywoven instrumentation. Harmonies rooted in years of friendship. Blending the foregoing across a catalog of songs featuring five distinct vocalists, Trout Steak Revival pushes the envelope on a progressing genre while drawing creatively from the many canons of American roots music. Band Members: Bevin Foley Fiddle/Vocals, Steve Foltz Guitar/Mandolin/Vocals, Casey Houlihan Bass/Vocals, William Koster Guitar/Dobro/Vocals, Travis McNamara, Banjo/Vocals.

Performing on stage at 11, and recording her first album at 13, Tuttle has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, Hardly Strictly, been a cover artist for Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, won first place in MerleFest’s Austin Songwriting Competition, and graduated on a Hazel Dickens Memorial Scholarship from Berklee College of Music. Her lovely voice, impeccable guitar playing, and sensitive song writing make her a star on the rise. She has 2 million + YouTube views, and has recently released two EP’s with The Goodbye Girls and as a duo with John Mailander. Her highly-anticipated album of eleven original songs is set for release this year. The Molly Tuttle Band features John Mailander and Wes Corbett. The Molly Tuttle Band has dazzled audiences across the country with their energetic live performances and original take on roots music.

The Unseen Strangers have ambitiously cultivated a musical identity shaped by good old-fashioned bluegrass, the limitless barrage of contemporary musical influences, and a curious sense of humor. Newgrass ambassadors, The Unseen Strangers favor innovation over convention. With their 2016 album, “Stranger Places”, the band challenges the limits of what they are capable of, exploring the gamut of what can be done with strings. The resulting fun, stunning songs feature inimitable instrumental performances. The sevenpart instrumental kick off “Ice Jam” launches the listener on an expansive journey through nine original songs, including the three-piece horn section funkiness of “Old City Jail” and the psychedelic newgrass epic “Square Trance”. The Strangers also pay homage to their bluegrass roots on “Wicked Lover” and the freight train inspired barnburner “New Railroad Blues”. Working with producer Andrew Collins, on “Stranger Places” the band simplified their approach to the studio with quick, concise live off the floor sessions. Founded in 2008 by Adam Shier, the band won a Music Nova Scotia Award in 2009 for Bluegrass/Country Album of the Year, and Delfest’s Band Competition in 2013.

BANJO STAND

In 2014

, the Office of Raleigh Arts commissioned Wyoming artist Bland Hoke to create a temporary public art project in conjunction with the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) annual World of Bluegrass Week. Using over 500 necks and nearly 150 pots from off-spec components collected over 12 years from Deering Banjos, Bland created a 20-foot tall sculptural installation surrounding the city’s Bruno Luchessi bronze sculpture of Sir Walter Raleigh. Titled Banjostand, the installation’s location is a popular gathering point for impromptu jam sessions and selfies. A new addition for 2016 will be a custom-designed oversized banjo for Sir Walter, created by Remo and Deering Banjos!

September 26 – October 1:

• #Banjostand photo contest: Use the #IBMA or #Banjostand hashtags to send photo greetings from the banjostand and your winning photo could earn you cool prizes. • POKEMON GO! Banjostand will potentially be a site for discovering Pokémon

September 29 – October 1:

• Banjostand Prop Shop and Photography Studio: Gather up your friends and get your picture taken on the Banjostand (hours typically 12-2pm and 6-9pm daily).

September 28th, 6:30am and October 1st, 8:30am:

• Morning Yoga at Banjostand: Join instructors from Blue Lotus Yoga for free sessions of yoga on stage.

October 1st, 12:15pm:

• Large-scale Banjo Gathering. Come any and all banjo players to a gathering for a photo-op at Banjostand; how many banjos can we pull together?
