Images Images are the graphic elements that can bring a design to life. Whether as the main focus of a page or as a subsidiary element, images play an essential role in communicating a message and are thus a vital factor in establishing the visual identity of a piece of work. Images can be incorporated into a design in many ways, as shown in the examples throughout this volume, from full-bleed and passe partout to positioning using a variety of grid systems. Basic layout principles help the designer to use images in a consistent manner and in such a way that they remain in harmony with the other elements of the design.
