Kurt Siebenaller Codes of Honor

Don Quixote in America If Don Quixote were to come to my community he might image the cars as an opponent and might get himself killed. I believe that he could make this event happen if he can imagine wind meals as giants. He could also get himself in to trouble by trying to help people move large things like TVs and will be accused of theft. He may also spend much time in the library reading books. This would probably give him more ideas about night hood.

He may also have a hard time understanding how times have changed. This may come in many forms from being made fun of for looking like a night. Other forms may be him putting trust in non­trustworthy people and being taken advantage of. I believe that this will mostly of him lending items with monetary value to people and them not returning it. To conclude I believe Don Quixote would get in to a lot of trouble if he came to my community.

My personal code of honor begins with obeying the laws of the land. The advantages of following the laws of a given land are obvious. Life is more enjoyable when it is spent not paying fines or sitting in prison. Laws in a democratic land generally protect all individuals, so they benefit the entire population. Most law abiding citizens enjoy greater success than people who disregard the law.

Although there may be times this code might create a situation where other codes could be broken, this is still a fundamentally sound principle.

The second code is that unkind or malicious words should be avoided. People are naturally drawn to kind, caring people, so they will have more friends. Controlling your words is a trait of maturity and self­discipline. These types of people are respected members of a society. A disadvantage of always being kind is the possible misinterpretation of being venerable or weak, which may attract mean, aggressive attention from others.

The last code of honor is that people should respect authority and elders. One of the most valuable advantages is the wisdom that can be gained from respectful relationships with the older members of society. Often the advice given is from experience and “tried and true.” Recognizing the value of older members of a community is an admirable quality. One of the disadvantages is that interacting with some older people requires a lot of patience.

All of these codes are examples of high expectations one might choose to live by. For example obeying laws is a given and almost everyone would have a desire to follow this code if for no other reason than to avoid the consequences. Speaking only kind and thoughtful words is too high of an expectation for most people, but generally not being malicious is an expectation that is accepted by society. Many people still use hurtful words when angry or filled with emotion. In our society our code of honor is called ethics and has a standard with some variation that is enforced.

I don’t recall ever having to choose between any two of my Codes of Honor. A scenario that comes to mind of having to choose between two of my codes would involve following a law that would create a moral dilemma. I would imagine that I may have been someone that may have hidden my Jewish neighbor during World War II. On a much smaller scale, speaking truth over kind words may also cause a clash of codes.

If I were to go back in medieval times, I think my codes of honor would not be as beneficial or relevant because they designed for a more modern, sophisticated society. This is mostly because my code of honor is not too different from theirs. I think technology would probably be the biggest divider between uses. Over all I think the
