Independent Training News (ITN) IATP & OCN Credit4Learning : Together we raise the bar

These days, people want more value for money, at the same time they demand the highest quality too. How can training providers assure their clients that they are providing a quality service without having to incur huge extra costs? It can be a real challenge, in a competitive market place when price is so often king. But it is also really important to balance price against quality, especially in a health and safety environment where the needs of the learners and clients have to be paramount. That is where OCN Credit4Learning can support training providers, not only in obtaining a competitive advantage, but also in delivering high quality training that benefits their clients, learners and reputation. This is one of the reasons we at OCN Credit4Learning are excited to be working in partnership with IATP. IATP is working hard to raise the bar in the Asbestos training field, and we fully support the hard work that is going on in delivering important and high quality training with this hazardous substance. By working in partnership with IATP and accrediting a number of their courses, we can provide the quality assurance that customers are demanding. Recognition for Quality Training: Accreditation is all about quality assurance and providing extra recognition for the learner’s skills, and the training providers’ service. OCN Credit4Learning has a long history of providing bespoke accreditation and support for numerous organisations up and down the country. Working with a range of organizations from University’s to Prisons, from Charities and NHS Trusts to Independent Training Providers we have built our reputation on developing a cost effective, efficient and user friendly accreditation service, and hence assuring your learners and clients of the quality of the training they are receiving.

level. Once a course has been accredited, we will also attach learning credits which are nationally recognised in Further Education as underpinning knowledge, this helps give the course a currency that the learner can use for their own personal development. Finally we moderate our members. When a training provider registers a group of learners we will send one of our moderators to visit the training provider and review the Assessment materials; ensuring that this matches what was agreed when the course was approved for accreditation. Therefore, the training provider, the client and the learner all gain from the quality assurance provided by the accreditation process. You’re in Control: The important thing to remember about all this process is that it is your course that has been accredited, not ours. Therefore the course that you the training provider has developed is being recognised, and rather then having to adopt external learning methods and materials, your unique training package is being recognised and supported by an Accreditation body. Supporting IATP’s Quality: It is a privilege to be working with IATP to help pioneer and develop the quality of training in this sector. IATP as a Community Interest Company is a unique partner to work with; therefore, we have developed a specialist model to support the members of IATP in delivering high quality accredited courses at a price that their clients can afford. As mentioned above, the courses will remain unique to the training provider, they will remain specialist and bespoke, but the clients who buy into IATP training accredited through OCN Credit4Learning will receive that extra level of quality assurance that comes from accreditation.

This is one of the main reasons we are working with IATP, we recognise the efforts that they have made to raise standards, and give their clients and learners more. IATP have recently accredited a number of courses through us, this means that IATP members who opt to deliver OCN Credit4Learning accredited courses have an extra opportunity that they can offer their clients. Their course, their style of delivery remains the same, they can still tailor it to their particular clients needs, however, it will now be independently verified by OCN Credit4Learning, which in turn provides the client with the quality assurance, and confidence that a third party is objectively checking and supporting the standards of the training provided.

If you’re interested in further information, please contact us, you can either call myself on: David Holmes 07748 901302, and email: dholmes@ocnotcom.com

How it works: OCN Credit4Learning is a membership organisation, and membership is a privilege that we will only give to organisations that are progressive minded, and have quality assurance procedures, appeals procedures and equal opportunities procedures. Furthermore, we will work closely with training providers to recognize the courses they have developed to map them to academic levels, and accredit the course at the agreed

Independent Training News (ITN) Compensation for Mesothelioma 22 November 2010 A man has been awarded compensation of £167,500 after contracting mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos in the workplace. A source at law firm Irwin Mitchell said the man developed symptoms of breathlessness in early 2009 after being exposed to asbestos during his employment at APV Pasilac Limited, formerly Pratchett Brothers, in Carlisle. He was reportedly employed by the company from August 1960 until October 1965. The firm manufactured industrial dryers, in the course of which dryers fitted with asbestos linings were manufactured in the panel shop. The boiler house and extensive pipe work in the factory were lagged with asbestos and the man regularly carried out repairs and maintenance on them. Irwin Mitchell argued that it was a result of this work that he was exposed to asbestos dust and fibres, and contracted mesothelioma. The lawyer’s Newcastle workplace injury team successfully settled the case for £167,500 in October 2010. Croner 22/10/2010

DATA PROTECTION what is it and how does it work? To most people the words ‘data protection’ can conjure up the same groaning response these days as ‘elf and safety’ – a necessary evil where common sense sometimes loses out to legislation and can hamper the straightforward way we try and do business. How many of us have been frustrated when trying to access seemingly innocuous pieces of information only to be told that because of ‘data protection’ such information is denied us? The Data Protection Act 1998 sought to ensure that Companies who processed personal data were registered with the Information Commissioner (IC) in order that such dissemination of information could be better regulated. The Act requires that each Company nominate a Data Controller who would be responsible for notifying the Information Commissioner when personal information may be shared with a third party. Notification is a statutory requirement and every organisation must notify the Information Commissioners Office unless they are exempt – and such registration is not expensive and dependent on the size of the business. Notification is the process by which a data controller informs the IC of certain details about their processing of personal information. These details are used by the IC to make an entry describing the processing in a register that is available to the public for inspection (on the ICO website at www.ico.gov.uk) and ensures transparency and openness. It is a basic principle of data protection that the public should know ( or should be able to find out) who is carrying out the processing of personal information and why it is being carried out in the first place. Put simply, if your Company intends to share personal details of staff or stakeholders with a third party i.e

Independent Training News (ITN) Planting Memories

By Marissa Carruthers Published on Fri Nov 19 13:26:44 GMT 2010 SUNDERLAND’S first memorial garden to mark the lives of mesothelioma victims has been opened. Widower Ray Turnbull was joined by 50 others for the planting ceremony of the garden at Woodridge Gardens, Columbia, which pays touching tribute to those who have died of the deadly asbestos-related cancer. More than 3,000 snowdrop bulbs were planted at the site, which will inject a bit of winter cheer for those visiting each year. Ray launched a support group earlier after his wife Jean died of the disease last year and his mum Jane died in 1979. Both worked at the notorious Turner and Newall chemical works in Washington. He said: “I set up a support group earlier this year and we decided we wanted to get some snowdrops because the snowdrop is the national charity’s flower. “From there, we wanted to create a snowdrop garden in Washington and as a group we set up this memorial garden. “We wanted a place where we could go to remember loved ones and I go there and sit for five minutes and think of my wife.” The names of lost loved ones are also being recorded in a memorial book, with names being added over the years. “If anybody who dies of mesothelioma they can contact the group, make a small donation and we can plant snowdrops in their memory and include their names in the book,” Ray, 64, said. “This is the fifth snowdrop memorial garden for the national charity but the first one in Sunderland.” The support group is hosting a Christmas fete on Sunday, November 28, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at Woodridge Gardens, Oxclose Road. Entry is free and there will be all the usual stalls. Call Ray on 415 1460 or 07912 637 386 for more information. HSE Introduction to asbestos learning package

An interactive lesson for apprentices about asbestos and its dangers This 45 minute interactive lesson with supporting activities and materials is aimed primarily at trade’s apprentices in the 16 - 19 age group, for delivery by college lecturers and other vocational education providers. It is also relevant to, and capable of being delivered by, industry professionals, eg: as part of workplace training. Research shows that although trades people know that asbestos is harmful to health, they believe that it is a historical problem, and so do not take action to protect themselves. This package is designed to raise awareness of apprentices about the risks they face when working with asbestos, providing them with basic guidance about what they need to do. Younger people, if routinely exposed to asbestos fibres over time, are at greater risk of developing disease than older workers. This is due to the latency of the affects of asbestos on the body. Providing apprentices with key information at an early stage means they are better equipped to challenge poor work practices and protect themselves. The learning package is free to download and consists of •Introduction and Lesson Plan for lecturers [1] •Right click the link below and select 'Save as', once saved, open the folder and 'Extract' the files to your desktop. 'Asbestos The Hidden Killer' power point presentation [2], [35Mb] (Including notes for lecturers) •Task sheets [3] The hunt for asbestos •Pocket card To order the free pocket cards, please send your order in writing to hsebooks@prolog.co.uk stating reference MISC946 (Introduction to asbestos learning package - pocket card) •Film poster [4] •Comic poster [5] •Asbestos building poster (ISBN: 9780717662999) You can buy this from HSE Books[6] for £5 (subject to availability) If you have any problems downloading this information you can order a disc for free from hsebooks@prolog.co.uk stating reference MISC947 (Introduction to asbestos learning package). http://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/learning-package/index.htm

Independent Training News (ITN) BANI: Ban Asbestos Network of India

Asbestos an Update from Canada

Ban Asbestos Network of India (BANI) is working to make India asbestos free. It is responding to public health crisis due to mining, manufacturing, use and trade of asbestos. Chrysotile Asbestos promoted by Russia, Canada, India & others, despite an epidemic of incurable diseases, is the most widely used form of asbestos. BANI is working on envirooccupational health issues in the shipping and ship breaking industry as well. Visit: www.toxicswatch.com

(Ottawa) An advertising campaign urging Prime Minister Harper to end Canada's asbestos exports was launched today in two major Canadian daily newspapers.

Ship-Breaking: Despite the asbestos risk, ship-breaking still a viable industry in Bangladesh. In late September, news came from Dhaka, Bangladesh that the State Minister for Environment and Forest, Hasan Mahmud, and the national government were in the midst of finalizing a policy to ensure that the ship-breaking industry would operate without polluting the environment. To prevent the elimination of the ship-building industry, which Mahmud claims will turn Bangladesh into a “market for foreign ironmongers,” the government is hoping to establish a separate zone for this industry.

"Stephen Harper's Killer Legacy," an ad endorsed by more than a hundred unions, organizations and health defenders from 23 different countries, was published today in the Ottawa Citizen and the Edmonton Journal. The ad features a mock cadaver with a toe tag which reads "Product of Canada. Cause of Death: Asbestos." It goes on to state: All asbestos kills. That is why over 50 countries have banned it, and why the World Health Organization has called for an end to its use. That's why no industrialized country, including Canada, uses it. That's why we spend millions of dollars removing it from our schools, hospitals and homes. But Canada still exports asbestos to developing countries. Stephen Harper is the only national political leader who still supports the export of asbestos.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring yet carcinogenic mineral long used in shipbuilding. Long term exposure to asbestos is known to cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lining of the chest and abdomen and the organs contained therein. Asbestos is most dangerous when it is disturbed, causing it to break and crumble, which in turn releases toxic fibres into the air that can be easily inhaled.

Prime Minister Harper, stop exporting asbestos disease to the developingworld. "This is an amazing example of international solidarity," said campaign founder Kathleen Ruff. "Canadians and people around the world are demanding that Prime Minister Harper end his deadly asbestos policy. He can no longer hide from this issue."

If they do not wear the proper protective gear and the industry is not properly regulated, ship-breakers are at a very high risk of breathing asbestos on a daily basis and contracting the oftentimes fatal pleural mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lungs. However, Minister Mahmud insists that all importers require clearance certificates that the ships do not carry any harmful substances and that the government is “now working on how to dismantle the vessels and ensure safe and hazard free environment at the same time.” http://www.mesothelioma.com/asbestos_news_dhaka_bangladesh_1012-2010.htm Editorial contributed by DSM Asbestos Consultants Limited

The ad appears at a crucial moment. An anonymous consortium of investors wants to open a new asbestos mine in Quebec to export quantities of asbestos to the developing world, increasing Canada's already substantial contribution to the global trade in asbestos. The campaign is organized by RightonCanada.ca, the human rights outreach and advocacy program of the Rideau Institute. The Rideau Institute is non-profit, independent research, advocacy, and consulting group based in Ottawa. Kathleen Ruff, Rideau Institute board member and campaign founder, kruff@bulkley.net (250) 847-1848 The Rideau Institute is an independent research, advocacy, and consulting group based in Ottawa. Independent Training News (ITN) HSE Myth of the Month Myth: Health and Safety has gone Mad

The reality

There are few greater myths than that health and safety has gone mad. During the last four years we've debunked some truly ridiculous misrepresentations of health and safety, including the banning of conkers, firemen's poles and park benches. We've scotched scare stories about excessive safety signs, rebutted rumors’ about onerous risk assessments and kicked back at claims that kids need to be wrapped in cotton wool. This trivialisation concerns us. It confuses businesses about their responsibilities and workers about their rights. HSE publishes advice setting out the sensible and proportionate steps we can all take to deal with workplace risks properly. As we retire the myth of the month series, let us leave you with one thought - health and safety is about saving lives, not stopping them.
