WHAT IS CIMIENTOS?

Tony Plana Actor, Director

CIMIENTOS presents texts with visionary craftsmanship. At the core of the program, it is also the diversity and inclusion with which Cimientos has been curated. 22 years ago, IATI Theater began a steadfast commitment to the playwright. Since then, hundreds of playwrights have graced the program.

Isolda Peguero Journalist

Cimientos, Spanish for “foundations,” now calls upon the most important member of this developmental step: you, the audience. From June 8th to June 12th, we will display 10 plays that have been years in the making and that are now primed for a public reception. We welcome you to help us make these plays all that they can be.

THE SPACE BET WEEN Written by Tommer Peterson Directed by Katrin Hilbe Wednesday, June 8, 2022 @6:00 PM Performed in English

This play is a meditation and inquiry into the imaginary space in time between one moment and the next. It explores “negative space,” the shape and nature of the emptiness between bodies on the human canvas. What is the space between an experience and our memory of the same? To what extent is memory a recording of the past events or a reconstruction informed by our own attachments? What about the space between you and I, the measure of intimacy? How is it shaped by what we hold to be true, and what maps the borders when our beliefs diverge? And how much of our painful human history hinges on our fear of allowing space for two opposing truths in the room at the same time?

L A ÚLTIMA LUZ Written by Camilo Vergara Directed by Ignacio García Bustelo Thursday, June 9, 2022 @6:00 PM Performed in Spanish

Soledad won the Stimulus for Theatrical Creation from the Colombian Ministry of Culture in 2018, and premiered at La Candelaria theater. In 2019, he was selected by the Ingmar Bergman Foundation to do a writing residency on the island of Farö in Sweden. From this experience, he began to write the play Silencios, winner of the Recognition of Playwriting for the Theater from the Ministry of Culture of Colombia in 2020.

Ignacio García Bustelo Director

Diego decides to write and direct a theatrical play about a topic he has spent time repressing: his parents’ story, both environmental activists assassinated in the 90s in Colombia. Diego understands that the only way to write an honest theater is to discover and portray what happened the night of the crime and the days that preceded it. In the life-size replica of his life that he has created in the theater, he discovers that his parents had lives different from those he’d imagined, that their moral complexity made them more human, and that those who ordered the crime were part of a web of corruption that still persists and is in a position of power. Fiction and reality will become indistinguishable, and Diego will only be free to live his life when he has been able to tell his

During a year, it lives beside a family that cares for it and feeds it. The year’s seasons advance, the sheep grows and starts observing the reality that surrounds it: nature, ancestral rites, animal sacrifices, and also the police violence that the Chilean state exerts against the Mapuche people. Faced with all of this, the sheep, filled with rage and hatred, decides to rebel from its condition of sheep and from having to be part of a confused, violent, and sick human society. Two fishermen, a father and a son, live at the base of a lighthouse next to a cold windy beach. One morning, hundreds of thousands of refugees appear on the shore. The son wants to help them, but the father forbids it; still, the son comes into contact with them. The appearance of the foreigners awakens the call of adventure in the son, challenging the authority of the father. Around them, a mysterious character, The Sandwoman, will reopen the wounds of the past... Tramontana evokes the Spanish exile in 1939, from the perspective of the host country, France. The work, however, resonates in the exiles of the present, starting from the most essential conflict: the struggle between selfishness and solidarity, when an entire people needs our help.

STARS WITH EXIT WOUNDS Written by Walter Sitati

Directed by Valentina Fratti

Consequently, all his works lean heavily on humor in all its shades, and are equal parts relatable and emotionally engaging. He also believes stories have to say something about what it means to be human in an imperfect world, and how to find a way to contribute meaningfully while in it.

Sunday, June 12, 2022 @3:00 PM Performed in English

In this socio-political tragicomedy, Odhiambo lives in a wheelchair with a bullet in his head. He has kept the faith that the government will compensate him for the pains the post-election violence caused him. When he learns that his would-be-daughter-in-law has terribly lied about the parentage of her daughter, and his son is being released from prison on the same day, he determines to do the only thing he is afraid to do: confront the legacy of a terrible past.

Walter Sitari Playwright His love for stories is deeply rooted in his family tradition. His mother is a gifted storyteller and singer, and she filled his childhood world with amazing characters who employed wit and demonstrated extraordinary strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. He was forever filled with a sense of awe and wonder about the possibilities of stories, the worlds they create, and the characters who inhabit them. This wonder and power of stories is what influences his style and tone in writing. He looks at stories as entertaining, first and foremost.

Valentina Fratti Director Most recently directed VIRTUE, a theatre/film hybrid project by Emily Bohannon, featuring Tony-Nominated Joshua Henry, and Paten Hughes. Other recent credits include the world premiere of Rebecca Gilman’s A Woman of the World starring Kathleen Chalfant, at 59E59; Adam Seidel’s Williston and They Promised Her the Moon by Laurel Ollstein.
