Blacksmith (Indigenous Athlete), Mia Parker (Athlete Leadership), Ashlee Scofield (Coach Leadership) and Keira Buckpitt (Athlete of the Year). We were incredibly proud of Telaya taking out the UAA Indigenous Athlete of the Year award and Mia winning the Steadfast Athlete Leadership Award.

In 2023, we were privileged to have 283 up and coming athletes join the academy. It continues to amaze me the abundance of talented athletes who reside within the five LGAs that constitute the Illawarra region, all of whom are following in the footsteps of some remarkable athletes who have paved the way before them. Reflecting on the past year, we have celebrated several noteworthy highlights. In November, we partnered with the Illawarra Mercury to revive the Illawarra Sports Awards after a decade-long hiatus. Held at the Fraternity Club, the event proved to be a resounding success, with IAS Alumni Emma McKeon honoured as the Sportsperson of the Year. In an Academy first, the Regional Academies of Sport hosted the RAS Awards in February, celebrating achievements from the eleven academies across NSW and the outstanding achievements of all our athletes. The IAS award nominees were Jack Gibson (Athlete with a Disability), Teleya

We were delighted by the launch of the NSWIS ‘Ready’ Pursu32+ talent program to establish a high performance talent pathway program. The Illawarra region had 6 athletes selected in the elite program which connects regional athletes and their coaches to high performance expertise. Through a series of camps and online webinars, these athletes will have access to NSWIS coaches, sports scientists, and nutritionists, along with essential guidance on strength & conditioning training, aiding their preparations for the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032. Congratulations to the following athletes for their selection into the program. Their dedication and determination serve as a testament to the bright future that awaits them, and I am confident that we are providing them with the best possible opportunities to excel in their chosen sports. • • • • • •

At this year’s Presentation Evening,

we recognized many athletes on their outstanding performances throughout the scholarship year. These extraordinary athletes have achieved top honours in their respective sports, showcasing their talent, dedication, and commitment to excellence. The prestigious 2022/23 DRB Group Tobin Family Athlete of the Year was awarded to netballer and all-rounder, Grace Tracey. Grace’s outstanding performance and versatility has earned her this well-deserved recognition and she joins a legacy of great athletes who have gone before her. The past year has been characterised by growth, resilience, and remarkable achievement - highlighting the unwavering dedication of our athletes, coaches, staff, and supporters. I praise the collective efforts of all, which have further solidified the Illawarra Academy of Sport’s standing as a pillar of sporting excellence within our region. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Emily Robinson on her well-deserved promotion earlier this year, transitioning from the Communications & Events role to the Athlete, Coach & Program Manager position following Scott Hatch’s departure in December. Emily has embraced the role with remarkable finesse, drive and determination, exemplifying a commitment to excellence and a passion for fostering athletic development. Thankyou to former Head of Physical Performance Mitch Nielson for his passion for athlete development and ongoing contributions to the IAS. We welcome Lachlan Mackenzie as our

Physical Performance Coach and Samantha Diamond as our Head of Physical Performance, both revered professionals in their field, bringing unparalleled technical expertise to the Academy. Additionally, Claudia McGoldrick has returned to the Academy as a temporary staff member until the Comms & Events position is filled with a full-time replacement. While the turnover of staff and board members presented its challenges, it is commendable that the seamless transition has not compromised our programs. Our resilient and highperforming staff have gone above and beyond to ensure the continued sporting and personal development of all our athletes. The end of an era was also marked with the retirement of our CEO, John Armstrong,. John’s passion for the Illawarra Academy of Sport is undeniable - he leaves the Academy in good shape and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to him for his contribution and dedication over the past five years.

I must also acknowledge the significant contributions by our fellow board members, Brian Weir PSM, Amy Duggan, Canio Fierravanti, and Megan Hutchison over the past year. As Megan and John conclude their service on the board, we extend our profound appreciation for their active participation and representation of Shoalhaven and Kiama LGAs over many years. As always, thank you to all our sponsors and our longstanding founding partners – UOW and the five Councils that make up the Illawarra Region for their substantial financial contributions since 1985. These partnership have enabled us to continue to offer fee-free scholarships to upcoming, pre-elite young athletes who might not otherwise have the means. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Great Illawarra Walk for the second consecutive year. Their fundraising efforts in 2022 and 2023 will significantly enhance our ability to provide a nurturing

and inclusive environment for all our athletes, ensuring that each individual has the opportunity to excel and thrive in their chosen sports. To our major sponsors – Office of Sport, Illawarra Credit Union & BlueScope WIN Community Partners – your contributions continue to give us the ability to deliver exceptional programs for our athletes; to Qube Ports, our Coach Development Program partner for ensuring our coaches are best in business; and to DRB Group, Aceit Sport, MCT Solutions, Soto Engineering, BAiMed, Storage King & Steadfast for partnering with us in 2023 and your commitment to us again in 2024. Looking ahead, I am filled with excitement and anticipation to witness each and every successes of our new and returning athletes. Finally, to our graduating athletes, I offer our best wishes for your continued success, not only in your sporting career but also in your life beyond sport.

During the transitional phase, I assumed the responsibility of Interim CEO until October, when we welcomed Salv Carmusciano as our new CEO. Salv brings with him a wealth of experience, having demonstrated exceptional leadership in sports administration and governance oversight. Additionally, his dedication to athlete development and fostering strong stakeholder relationships aligns seamlessly with our key objectives, and I am delighted to be collaborating with Salv on charting the Academy’s future course and driving continued success..

CORPORATE VISION AND STATEMENT

CORPORATE VISION ILLAWARRA ACADEMY OF SPORT MISSION To provide emerging athletes of the Illawarra the maximum opportunity for success and development through excellence in athlete programs and associated support services. VALUES The IAS is committed to these core values: leadership, empowerment, excellence, integirty, respect, and community. • We instil growth and leadership qualities in athletes, coaches and administrators of the IAS. • We strive to empower our athletes to achieve excellence in their sport and to become future leaders. • We conduct our operations with integrity and treat all athletes and stakeholders with respect. • We are proud custodians of the Illawarra and committed to serving our community We aim to … •Promote athlete development and success through a range of targeted athlete services. The IAS believes in a holistic approach to athlete development and seeks to collaborate the desired program outcomes through financial and operational efficiency.

•Provide leadership for sporting organisations and promote the development of sport in the Illawarra region by embracing its broader social responsibility. It actively seeks to encourage athlete citizenship and an ethos of giving back to the local community. •Achieve a sustainable financial position that affords it scope to provide high quality services to athletes. Importantly, it seeks to ensure that financial constraints are not inhibitors to the progression of athletes to the IAS We will be measured by … •How our scholarship holders are performing in the competition arena. •How consistently our scholarship holders and coaches are experiencing personal growth and development due to our programs. • How extensively we are supporting the Illawarra community. • How competently we are managing our finances and improving our financial sustainability. •How effectively we are growing our alumni network. • How robust our frameworks and policies are for managing the IAS and protecting our stakeholders. • How capably we are satisfying the

needs of our key stakeholders. HISTORY The concept of the Illawarra Academy of Sport emanated from a community based investigation into sport and lifestyle opportunities in the Illawarra. A committee which comprised of representatives from government, education, business and community sport recommended the establishment of an Academy to expand sporting opportunities for talented athletes of the region. With the University of Wollongong facilitating its progress, the committee’s vision became a reality. Then the Illawarra Institute of Sport was launched in December 1985, becoming Australia’s first Regional Academy of Sport. For funding reasons, the term Institute, was replaced with Academy prior to incorporation in 1988. Since 1985, there have been 7061 scholarships offered to local athletes. The IAS will continue to build on the range of sports available to local athletes. The regional academy format, pioneered in the Illawarra, has now been replicated across Australia and overseas. Nine independent regional academies are in operation across NSW with the national network of regional academies increasing. The strength of the IAS has always been its strategic alliances and partnerships with Illawarra business, local government, sporting associations at regional and state level and the University of Wollongong.

“To provide emerging athletes of the Illawarra the maximum opportunity for success and development through excellence in athlete programs and associated support services.”

IAS POSITION IN SPORTS STRUCTURE

ACADEMY POSITION IN SPORTS STRUCTURE

As a provider of talent development services, the Academy aims to position itself within the sports system at a level which will be of most benefit to athletes. As an independent autonomous organisation, the Academy is in effect, working on behalf of the local and state sporting associations to develop talented athletes for the benefit of both the athletes and the sport.

WOLLONGONG WINGECARRIBEE SHELLHARBOUR

KIAMA

The Academy programs are designed to complement the activities the athletes receive through their club and representative structure. NSW GOVERNMENT OFFICE OF SPORT As the largest single partner of the Academy, there are close operational links with the Office of Sport with regular interaction with the South Coast Region and at senior officer level. LOCAL & STATE SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS The IAS maintains links with a range of organisations to ensure that the local talented athletes receive the best possible support in their path to excellence.

SHOALHAVEN

Administrative and coaching links are maintained with local and State sporting associations in the scholarship sports that have programs in the Academy NSW INSTITUTE OF SPORT IAS sports programs are structured to ensure the athletes have the greatest opportunity to feed into the NSW Institute of Sport programs (where appropriate). REGIONAL ACADEMIES OF SPORT INC (RASI) The Regional Academies of Sport (RAS) is a unique network that covers the regional areas of NSW and constitutes nine (9) independent Regional Academies (including

the IAS) and, in conjunction with two (2) Academies operated by the Office of Sport, forms the network. The RAS network shares information on best-practice in athlete development and enables shared utilisation of resources, education and sports management knowledge and practices. Inter-Academy camps and competition occurs as does the culmination of competition for the Academies through the Your Local Club Academy Games (normally held in the April). The 2023 Your Local Club Academy Games were held in Wagga Wagga. The role of the RAS network is becoming increasingly relevant

with many State Sporting Organisations forming agreements with RAS to enable consistency of outcome across the state. ACADEMY CATCHMENT AREA The IAS operates through the Illawarra’s geographic region comprising the five local government areas of: Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven, and Wingecarribee. ATHLETE, COACH & PROGRAM MANAGER REPORT

ATHLETE, COACH & PROGRAM MANAGER REPORT 2023 EMILY ROBINSON ATHLETE, COACH & PROGRAM MANAGER the strength and conditioning, education and personal development opportunities. The education curriculum covered sport psychology, media skills, social media awareness, high performance, leadership, nutrition and practical cooking, clean sport, pathways and FTEM, financial fitness, mental health, sports medicine, growth and maturation, and this year expanded to include male and female specific education sessions.

In the words of Ted Lasso, “Success is not about the wins and losses. It’s about helping these young fellas be the best versions of themselves on and off the field.” This statement could not be truer for the Illawarra Academy of Sport. We are so fortunate to be in a space that propels athletes and coaches not only along their sporting pathway, assists with sport specific development and holistic performance support, but also builds foundations and skills that can be taken into life. Through our athlete and coach’s relentless pursuit of excellence, determination and camaraderie, the 2022/23 scholarship saw a plethora of growth and success across programs and activities. For this intake, we offered 283 scholarships across 13 programs covering over 35 different sports. Each sport specific program participated in regular training and camps. All athletes took part in the performance support program, taking into account

In February, SAVVY hosted the annual IAS Personal Development and Leadership Day at Stuart Park, the athletes extended their skills in communication, leadership and teamwork to complete a variety of challenges and activities. The day was filled with plenty of smiles, especially with CEO, John Armstrong racing around the colour run and down the slip & slide! A significant development this year has been the increase in inter Academy opportunities, with camps being held regularly across the state for the major sports. The IAS hosted the Southern Academies Golf Camp in February. Our cycling, hockey, rugby, volleyball, BMX, triathlon and netball athletes participated in Inter Academy sessions and camps throughout the year. These events were held in addition to one of the major highlights of the program, the Your Local Club Academy Games. IAS coaches and support staff have had access to additional coach development support through the Regional Academies of Sport (RAS) Coaching Conference, Coaching Extension Program and Coach

Mentoring. Many of the State Sporting Organisations have also arranged regular sessions with RAS coaches and provided sport specific coach development opportunities. We are so fortunate to have such an incredible group of coaches and managers. I would like to say a huge thank you to the 45 coaches and managers that give countless hours to the IAS, in planning, delivering and reviewing the programs for these emerging athletes. A big thank you and congratulations to Hockey Head Coach, Alex Mackay, on his 10th year of service to the IAS hockey program. As we continue to strengthen the preelite pathway space, we look forward to building on the high performance foundations for a bigger and bolder 2023/24!

YOUR LOCAL ACADEMY GAMES REPORT

YOUR LOCAL CLUB ACADEMY GAMES REPORT 2023 EMILY ROBINSON ATHLETE, COACH & PROGRAM MANAGER A contingent of 135 Illawarra Academy of Sport representatives headed to Wagga Wagga for the Your Local Club Academy Games from 21-23 April 2023. It was a hugely successful event, not just with great results but also by the fantastic sportsmanship, camaraderie and enthusiasm from all squads. The IAS competed across all seven sports: basketball, cycling, hockey, golf, netball, triathlon and volleyball, fielding two teams for basketball, hockey, netball and volleyball. Wagga boasts state-of-the-art sporting facilities, including the brand new PCYC which hosted basketball. A highlight for the 2023 event was the Bolton Park precinct, with triathlon, basketball and volleyball all competing within one place allowing for a fantastic atmosphere with spectators and athletes easily able to move between the sports. Another highlight of the weekend was seeing 1400 of the state’s emerging athletes, along with countless dignitaries, staff, spectators and supporters join together at the Equex Centre on Friday afternoon for the Official Opening Ceremony – something that had been restricted due to COVID for the past few years.

Alec Forbes were named in the inaugural Academy Games All Stars team. IAS Golfers, Sage Laird and Samarah Gibson finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the Girls Nett. In triathlon, Skye Bell won the Youth Female division and Harry Fraser claimed bronze in the Youth Male. The strength of the IAS Cycling squad was proved, with Cameron Harrison winning the U19 Mens and Lucy Allen winning the U15s Women division. STRENGTH & CONDITIONING REPORT

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING REPORT 2023 SAMANTHA DIAMOND HEAD OF PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE

In 2022/2023, the IAS continued to provide a comprehensive strength and conditioning service which supported the long-term athletic development of all scholarship holders. To ensure a strong foundation was established for both present and future physical development, every IAS athlete had access to three sport specific strength programs designed for varying levels of experience. Successful progression to each phase of programming was determined by movement competency and consistent attendance at gym sessions. Originally a 12-phase program, a 16-phase strength and conditioning program was developed to allow for a greater range of movement qualities. Physical performance testing was conducted at both the start (October 2022) and end (August 2023) of the scholarship. A comparison of results indicated athletes that consistently attended IAS gym sessions made significant improvements in all measures of general athletic ability, a

key objective of the strength and conditioning service. Early in the scholarship we delivered an education session, for both athletes and parents on the importance and benefits of youth resistance training. Other topics included training load management, the effect of “growth spurts”, and an examination of common myths related to youth strength training. These education sessions were well received, and feedback suggested they were extremely beneficial to both athletes and parents. The delivery of our strength and conditioning program was strengthened by support from Lachlan Mackenzie, who works part-time as a Performance Coach. Lachlan’s expertise and experience with youth athletes has been invaluable in allowing us to provide a high-quality service to all athletes. Additionally, 10 Performance Coaches were employed by the IAS to assist on a casual basis. The recruitment of these coaches strengthened the delivery of strength and conditioning sessions in regions outside the Wollongong Council area in particular, ensuring all IAS athletes are provided with the same opportunities for supervised strength and conditioning sessions. Thank you to our gym providers Kiama Leisure Centre, Lakeside Leisure Centre, Bay & Basin Leisure Centre, Moss Vale Memorial Aquatic Centre, UOW, Ulladulla Leisure Centre and Barnstorming Fitness. This year we have partnered with Shellharbour TAFE Sport and Recreation Department to allow the athletes to use the identified Strength and Conditioning facilities available at the TAFE.

The IAS continued its partnership with NSWIS which primarily involved delivering strength and conditioning sessions for NSWIS athletes based in the Illawarra, this included Sarah Carli and Luke Pople, who were both selected for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022. Other NSWIS athletes also include the NSW Wheelchair Basketball Team. This partnership helps strengthen pathway opportunities for our athletes and provides direct access to world class physical performance expertise. We truly believe we are delivering an invaluable program that not only supports long term athletic development, but teaches our athletes safe and healthy gym practices that will hopefully stay with them long after they leave the IAS. We look forward to continuing this in 2023/24.

GOLF REPORT 2023 JUSTIN CLARKE HEAD COACH LUKE GRINHAM COACH TAHNIA RAVNJAK ASSISTANT COACH ETHAN HARVEY DEVELOPMENT COACH RICHARD HARVEY MANAGER

The 2022/2023 golf squad had eight participants from various clubs across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven areas, with skill sessions conducted fortnightly on Monday afternoons across a variety of golf clubs in the Illawarra. A big thank you to Kiama Golf Club for hosting most of our sessions along with the Links Shell Cove and Wollongong Golf Club. This year’s focus was to provide skill-based sessions concentrating on improving tournament performance, through utilising short game drills in a team environment. The Athletes split up into teams and competed against each other over a number of chipping, putting, and bunker drills. The aim of these drills and being able to complete them under pressure will no doubt assist the squad to achieve better results under tournament conditions. The IAS hosted the Southern Regional Academies for an Inter Academy Golf Camp in February at Port Kembla. All athletes learnt from a variety of coaches for a range of skills and drills sessions and matchplay. As a squad the IAS travelled to the Bathurst Junior Masters and the South Coast Junior Masters. In April, the athletes competed in the Academy Games at Wagga Wagga, with the golf squad doing very well. Member Sage Laird took out the win in the nett division pipping other academy athlete Samarah Gibson who finished runner up, great effort girls. Art Bussenschutt and Coopar Nianios were selected on the South Academies team for the RAS North v South Cup.

During the year golf athletes participated in strength and conditioning training conducted through the IAS to further develop the necessary physical requirements of an elite athlete. The individualised strength and conditioning programs will no doubt benefit these athletes in their future sporting endeavours. The golf squad had some fantastic achievements in the 2022/ 23 season. Leading by example team captain Sienna Clarke won the Blue Mountains Junior Masters and the Peter O’Malley Junior Masters, as well as having strong finishes in several other junior Masters events making her the 2023 Junior Masters champion, winning a spot to represent NSW in the Greg Norman Junior Masters Queensland held in December. Other notable performances came from two of the squad’s most improved golfers; Sage Laird and Samarah Gibson, both finding podium finishes in the academy games in Wagga. Further, Sage continued this form into July when she took out the nett division in this year’s State Age Championships played up in Byron Bay. Finishing off the season strongly, Art Bussenschutt placed first in the nett division at the South Coast Junior Masters breaking his handicap on both days. This was a common success with multiple athletes significantly reducing their handicaps. I look forward to following the progress of the 2023/2024 golf squad, in what is going to be a very exciting era for golf across the globe.

The 2022/23 cohort were trained by Ella Gibson, Thomas David and Alexander Mackay throughout the training season who guided the athletes to improve their skills, technique and hockey awareness. They were assisted throughout by various guest coaches who support the refinement of skills development and further holistic athlete improvement. Hockey specific training sessions were broken up amongst the supporting Local Government Areas to allow for athletes to utilise the various hockey fields available. This also allowed for athletes to attend training sessions closer to home and support all local hockey associations. Sessions were usually broken up into physical development, core skill improvement, structured game scenarios and small sided games to implement the key focus of the session. This allowed athletes to continually refine and develop their hockey specific skills in a learning focused environment.

hosting the initiative. Both squads then attended the Regional Academy Games held in Wagga Wagga during the April School Holidays. The IAS boys squad combined with SSA due to available athletes. The boys squad had mixed results where they continued to combine as a team to score some sensational goals, displaying the skills they had refined throughout the training season. With fatigue setting in as the weekend concluded, the boy’s team were unable to win their semi-final match vs Hunter, leaving them in 3rd position for the tournament. The girls team started the weekend with 3 draws before having their first win. Once this happened the team continued to create goal scoring chances to make their way into the semi-finals. A tight match versus Northern Inland meant Illawarra made their way through to the final against Metro. Emily Morrison put the ladies in Red ahead, only for Metro

Athletes attended a training camp in February where the IAS squad travelled to Lithgow for 2 days training with 4 other regional academies. This allowed athletes to utilise the skills they had developed throughout the season against athletes from competing regions. This was a wonderful way for athletes to develop their relationships with their teammates and opposition. Thank you to the Western Region Academy of Sport for

This is the first time the team had won the tournament, a wonderful achievement for all the hard work and dedication displayed by the whole team. Through participation in Strength and Conditioning programs, Sports Psychologist sessions with Condor and many other workshops to support the athletes, the 2022/23 hockey program continued to support aspiring hockey players in the Illawarra region to do their best. This is a testimony to the IAS staff, board and sponsors for their continued support of pre-elite athletes. 2023 has been a very successful year for the Netball Squad. The athletes have been exposed to high performance training and education. The squad also had the opportunity to train with and play against other Regional Academy Squads during the annual Regional Academy Netball Camp and their two tournaments held every year - Academy Games held in April and Academy Challenge (netball specific) in September. Throughout the year, one of our focus points has been doing the basics and doing them well under pressure and fatigue. Another focus points for 2023 was building trust within the squad and making sure ahletes were confident to back themselves on and off the court, creating a holistic athlete. The squad was led by captains Ella Brooks and Rhianna Clarke. The program began with a team bonding session which was held at Stanwell Tops. We used this to get the squad working together through challenges and thinking outside the box.

put into practice what they learnt on day 1. It was an awesome first hit out for the squad and their first of many opportunities to be talent identified before preparing to go away to Your Local Club Academy Games. In April, the squad headed to Wagga Wagga to compete against the other Regional Academies in a 2-day tournament. During the preparation for this event, the athletes were able to have special guest players attend from South Coast Blaze assist with defining some of their positional skills before the tournament. This year was one of the most successful years to date at this tournament. Both divisions were competitive, and their skills shined on court. Anastacia Etita and Danielle Mullard were both named MVP of their respective divisions. A great achievement! The squad coaches were able to receive mentoring during the competition, provid-

In March, the squad headed to the Regional Academy Camp held in Homebush, bringing together all the regional netball squads for a 2-day event. The Academy Challenge is a 3-day event which consists of a ‘challenge day’ and two match play days. is always a favourite for both players and coaches and this year did not disappoint. The netball squad performed extremely well at Academy Challenge with Ella Brooks from our Div 1 team being named MVP in the division one pool across all academies competing in that pool. Our program is designed to give athletes opportunities to be seen and exposed to high level netball with many chances to be talent identified which they may not have gotten without being within the program. This year we had several players talent identified, and it is a testament to the hard work the squad has put in. Some of the biggest highlights were Sally Wefel being named in the NNSW Regional Emerging Talent team, Sari Thompson playing for Malta in the Europe Netball Opens Challenge and Grace Tracey being named as the IAS Tobin Award winner for 2023 - a massive achievement for one of our netball squad members to receive such a prestigious award! Sally and Grace were also named our Athletes of the Year. Thank you to our coaches for 2023 – Shaye Wilkinson, Gemma Silver and our amazing manager Karen Clark for their time, commitment, and knowledge they have provided to our squad throughout the program year. The season had a bit of a bumpy start with little time to prepare for Academy Games but that didn’t dampen the spirit of the squad. With the whole squad travelling it was sure to be a good weekend both on and off the court. The athletes blew us away with their enduring, determined, and spirited performances on the court and also showing a more relaxed and fun attitude off the court. The girls managed to claw out a 4th place finish after narrowly missing out on making the finals, losing in the semi-finals to the eventual winners South-West Sydney. The boys weren’t so fortunate, missing out on the finals in a very strong and experienced boys’ division. They still performed above and beyond what was expected of them and improved drastically over that weekend alone.

of the competition which tested our girls resolve as a squad. They banded together, took on new roles and gave everything they had. Despite all this, they were sitting in second place after the first day of the competition. However, they couldn’t hold on to their hot start, letting it slip on the second day and finishing with another 4th place. Through all their adversities they played amazing volleyball and enjoyed the weekend. The boys came up against another strong and seasoned competition. Down on numbers and no substitutions, the boys competed valiantly in every game over the weekend but were unfortunately unable to improve on their result like the girls and missed out on the finals again. Coming off Academy Games we had two athletes, Madhu Mahen and Lewis

Coming off of Your Local Club Academy Games we saw a near perfect attendance from the athletes as they were hungry to prove themselves the next chance they got. The kids worked hard each week to improve both on and off the court together. It was fantastic to watch friendships and bonds be made both on and off the court and see the whole squad grow and develop as athletes and young adults. We were then fortunate enough to attend the RASi Volleyball Challenge in Port Macquarie to round out the year with one team in each competition again. We suffered a major injury in the first game

RISK, FINANCE & AUDIT COMMITTEE REPORT

RISK, FINANCE & AUDIT COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORT 2023 BRIAN WEIR RISK, FINANCE & AUDIT COMMITTEE CHAIR ($127,000) was provided for and would be expended in the required time and in accordance with the funding guidelines. Ms Duggan took the lead in these two categories. The third one was the need to continue the usual day to day financial operations of the Academy. The Acting President and I shared this burden with excellent support from the IAS Bookkeeper. With the commencement of the new CEO, I withdrew from this role.

The last five month have been a challenging period for the Academy in regard to both general and financial administration. Firstly, I wish to acknowledge the assistance and support I received from Ms S Wingate who worked with Ms Duggan and myself with respect to the financial administration. Following the departure of the previous CEO in late June, the financial administration fell into four broad categories.

The fourth category was the preparation for, and undertaking of, the audit of the 2022/23 financial year including compilation of the Annual Statements. Everybody contributed to this task in varying degrees to ensure that the audit could proceed smoothly. The major query was how to treat the two annual donations from the Great Illawarra Walk – the expenditure of which has not yet been resolved by the Board. Such was the workload in July that, unfortunately, we could not meet the Auditor’s initial timeline.

The first one was a review and analysis of the accounts (including costing, revenue allocation, income outstanding and program expenditure etc. up to 30 June).

The audit has now been completed and it was a “clean” audit. It found no evidence that the financial operations do not comply with the relevant financial, statutory and governance standards applicable to the Academy.
