t is my pleasure and my privilege to be writing to you at the end of this, another successful year for Taylor’s International School, Puchong. The TISPC family has grown positively in both experience and achievement with our students at all levels, producing excellent academic results in addition to staging outstanding stage performances and collecting numerous accolades in the sporting arena. As I write this second, and for me sadly, my last Yearbook introduction, I have great pleasure in reflecting back on a year of achievement, positivity and growth. Our IGCSE results, the first for TISPC, were released in January and placed us at a high level when compared to our competitors and comparing favourably with many Tier 1 schools in Malaysia. These were followed by our Bahasa Malay and Mandarin results for examinations sat in May and June. The results were truly outstanding with over 90% of students scoring A* or A grades with an overall A*-C grade percentage of 100%. Whilst we devote significantly time weekly to staff development and training, the additional support from Quantum Learning Education from the USA has an is further enhancing the pedagogical skills of our teachers and support staff. These changes will no doubt be reflected in our next set of examination results to be released in January 2019 and in the S.K.I.P.S inspection feedback that we will receive following our inspection at the end of 2018 academic year. We had the pleasure of celebrating our Year 11 graduation in November as our most senior students move on to their next chapters following a year of very hard work in preparation for the rigours of IGCSE. Our Year 6 students enjoyed a ceremony to mark the end of their Primary Education as they embark on new challenges in Year 7. Our Music and Drama performances this year have been nothing less than spectacular with “Hairspray,” “Taylorian’s Rhapsody” and “Taylor’s Got Talent” being three huge

highlights of the year. Breaking new ground, more students than ever are now involved with back stage and performance management duties in support of these events. One highlight has been the debut of student conductors for the orchestra and school band; both of which are populated exclusively by students. In the third term of 2018, we again celebrated the sporting achievements of our students and school in a whole host of sporting competitions. Our annual sports awards evenings became two events this year; one for the Primary School and one for the Secondary School, as a result of the increased numbers of children participating in team and individual events this year. An excellent year of sports with further expansion next year. Our students ventured to Japan as part of our student exchange agreement with Niigata School of Tokyo and enjoyed excellent hospitality in addition to an interesting learning experience exploring a new country and making new friends. Such excursions have huge learning value both academically and in terms of personal growth and will repeat next year in addition to a tour to the UK focusing on performing arts, history and literature. As I close and leave TISPC, I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to the school community of students, parents, staff and supporters of what is a wonderful institution. I look forward to seeing the school move forward and achieve great things in the years that lie ahead. nother jam-packed year has seen TISPC grow from strength to strength. This year marked the first set of results from our first Year 11 IGCSE cohort and the results are stellar. With well over 80% of the students achieving A*-C results and, of course, being Alma mater to the top Mathematics Student in the World – it is fair to say that the Secondary School team have done a tremendous job in preparing the students. It now all lies in the hands of the current Year 11s to continue and improve on these results.

As a strategic pillar of the school, new exciting projects will fill the calendar next year and provide opportunities for the students to share their talents and refine their craft on our stages.

Primary must also be commended on a fantastic launch and implementation of the International Primary Curriculum. This has been a welcome curriculum change which has seen much excitement and creativity in the classroom while allowing students to learn while taking part in various targeted activities. This will surely lay the ground work for more good results in the Year 6 end of year exams and also better equip the students for the changing world in the future.

The success of the Sports teams continues to be another major pillar in the school. The various teams continue to do exceptionally well and the numbers of participation and team entries have increased significantly. Teams and individuals have managed to set new records and win tournaments that have brought the school much credit and the hard work of the staff and coaches must be acknowledged and saluted. Sportsmen and -women continue to win and excel at various KLISS tournaments – a huge achievement for a school as young as ours. Being able to punch above our weight means that TISPC will always be a school with a strong sporting prowess, which is the envy of many an International School already.

TISPC was also awarded the Fiabci-Malaysia Property Award 2017 in the Purpose Built category, further substantiating the Puchong campus’ beautiful and Builtfor Purpose environment. The students and staff all still enjoy the conducive environment to develop and learn in all spheres of school life.

This year has been full of achievements, excitement, growth and reflection. Support for the school is always been encouraged and appreciated and to the parents and friends of the school, we thank you for the cakes for bake sales, the trips backwards and forwards to rehearsals and fixtures and of course dropping off the forgotten lunch bag!

Performing Arts continues to grow and produce many productions which have won acclaim from staff, students, parents and the wider community. This year saw the staging of HAIRSPRAY as the Secondary school major production, and ROCK BOTTOM as the first-ever musical for the Primary school. Our annual music event Taylorian’s Rhapsody received a “Broadway Classics” theme and was

A well-deserved break is now called for, a chance to relax and rejuvenate so that when the term begins in January, a renewed energy can sustain even greater achievements and endeavour.

t has become a yearly tradition for Taylor’s Puchong to hold an assembly for Chinese New Year, an event to symbolise the joy and happiness we feel during this time of the year. This year’s events were, as always, entertaining and amazing. The decorations in the atrium were spectacular, the long hanging strips of red packets flowing in the wind, the gold glittering in the sun. The door decorations were even more wonderful, the competition spurring students to do their best and outshine their fellow classes with each, unique in their own way. Even so, the assembly was the most outstanding event of all. Being one of the quiz emcees, we were all a little nervous but excited for the performance, and practised a couple of times to calm our nerves. Then, the doors opened and the classes and teachers came in, a whirlwind of red and scarlet. Many of the students were wearing traditional clothes too, joining in the celebrations. When they were all settled, the emcees made their appearance. After greeting everyone and giving a small introduction, they made way for Mr. Moreton to give a speech. After that, in the spirit of Chinese tradition, two students gave a sweet performance of Dizi and Erhu to start things off, allowing fellow students to experience the music of the

Chinese culture. Next, Alvin came on stage to give his performance and sang two Chinese New year songs, incorporating some stand up comedy that left the audience in stitches. After that, each of the year groups had a round of quizzes, bringing out the competitive side in students as they vied for the prizes. The next half of the assembly continued with a group of Year 9 students who sang a remix of two Chinese songs, accompanied by beat-boxing as the background music. Last came a group of girls who danced to the song by Jay Chou. It was light and uplifting, and their dance sweet and graceful. While this was going on, the Year 7 and 8 students were outside the auditorium having their own festivities. Many mini-games were set up for them to play, and their laughter rang throughout the whole school while they played with their friends, enjoying a rare moment of pure fun. We could not resist taking a peek of all the fun they were having! All in all, this year’s Chinese New Year’s events were a huge success. It will be very hard for next year’s assembly to top it!

HEAD OF CURRICULUM SUPPORT

rovision for children with additional needs has gone from strength to strength in 2018, building on the successes of 2017 and thinking ahead to the future. In order to better reflect the wide ranging support we provide to our students, we have had a name change, from Curriculum Support, to Inclusion Support. Ms Judith Lee has joined the school as Head of the Inclusion Department in the Secondary School, whilst Ms Rosie Greaves continues to lead Inclusion in the Primary School. Secondary Inclusion Support In term one and two, all Secondary School staff attended a structured and extensive in-house training programme to ensure that their knowledge on good inclusive practice is developed. This programme is ongoing with further sessions planned for term three. Furthermore, as part of the need to improve learning outcomes for all students in TISPC, the Secondary Inclusion department has identified individual learning needs, worked with teachers, students and parents to develop a robust learning profile to ensure that every student’s potential is maximised. It is early days but already the development of the department is well and truly moving forward. Primary Inclusion Support This year we have sought to develop stronger links with the community, and have invited a local voluntary organisation called ‘The Inclusive Outdoor Classroom’ into school to run their monthly inclusive football sessions. Until TISPC began hosting these sessions the Inclusive Outdoor Classroom had been using public parks, which often did not have adequate facilities to meet the needs of the children

who attend. With the support of TISPC, up to 5 0 children with varying levels of disability are now able to access good quality facilities, and access the same opportunities as their mainstream peers. This has also meant that many TISPC school staff have been able to volunteer their time by helping out at the sessions, which has enabled them to gain a deeper understanding of the range of needs that families can face. TISPC also hosted the premiere of ‘Inclusion Equals Love’, a documentary film about the development of the first fully inclusive pre-school in Malaysia. This was well attended, with more than 300 guests, including officials from the Ministry of Education and other government bodies. Term 2 saw the introduction of our parent support group, which aims to link up the families of children with additional needs at TISPC, to begin to develop a strong network of friends, advocates and advisors. Parenting a child with additional needs can be a lonely place, especially here in Malaysia where many people still prefer not to talk about these issues. By being more open and willing to share, parents can support each other through tricky situations such as finding the right therapists, managing shadow aides, or understanding and dealing with their child’s behaviour. The next steps for the Inclusion Support Team are to continue with developing staff knowledge and understanding of what inclusion is and how we can implement it here at TISPC, whilst also building stronger links between the Primary and Secondary Departments. n conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, teachers and students of Taylor’s International School Puchong recently gathered at the school’s assembly hall for a fun and exciting Hari Raya gathering at 10am, on the 22nd June 2018. All of the students in TISPC wore colourful and beautiful traditional costumes. The gathering began with the National Anthem by all teachers and students. The event continued with a speech from Mr Marco, Head of Primary. Upon which, the ceremony continued with a Fashion Show by Year 1 and Year 2 as well as a Singing Performance by Year 3 which included Hari Raya songs such as “Suasana di Hari Raya and Balik Kampung”. The school believed that by having this celebration, the students have gained awareness and insights into the culture of our Muslim friends. The festival celebration was followed by ‘Pantun Berirama’ (Poem) from Year 4 and Powerpoint Presentation from Year 5. It was an amazing presentation. Students were showed

Semua guru dan murid berpakaian dengan cantik sekali dan indah mata dipandang oleh mereka yang hadir. Majlis dimulai dengan nyanyian lagu Negaraku. Seterusnya, ucapan alu-aluan oleh guru besar sekolah iaitu Encik Marco. Selesai sahaja ucapan wakil guru, para guru diminta untuk ke dataran perhimpunan bagi sesi bergambar sempena dengan majlis yang diadakan pada hari tersebut. Setelah itu, acara persembahan murid menyusul selepas sesi bergambar. Bagi persembahan yang pertama, ianya diwakili oleh kumpulan nyanyian oleh murid-murid Tahun 3. Persembahan kedua pula ialah Pantun Berirama oleh muridmurid Tahun 4 dan Pertunjukan Fesyen oleh murid-murid Tahun 1 dan 2. Majlis disusuli dengan pertunjukan video

Year 6 than performed Choral Speaking. The celebration continued with ‘Titian Kasih Food Drive Charity’ by Ms. Tania, Year Leader of Year 6. The festival celebration also saw the berziarah session between the guest of honour, teachers, parents and students in bringing the spirit of togetherness amongst them. The celebration gave an opportunity to the citizens of school to foster closer ties with one another. The event was then concluded by Mr. Marco’s inspirational speech. All in all, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a joyous celebration that involves happy feasting with everyone. There were ketupat, lemang, noodles and Nasi Lemak. Everyone enjoyed the meals happily. It was a wonderful day and it helped us to learn more about the culture and customs of the different ethnic cultures in Malaysia.

Diharapkan agar majlis ini dapat memberikan kenangan manis kepada semua guru dan murid. Terima kasih kepada semua guru dan murid yang telah bertungkus-lumus bekerja bagi menjayakan majlis sambutan Hari Raya Aidilfitri tahun ini dengan baiknya.

he contribution of a teacher cannot be ignored at all. In many countries across the world, teachers’ day is a special day where celebrations are held to honour teachers of schools, colleges, and universities for the role they play and for their contributions to society. Teachers day in TISPC is no different. This year, our celebrations were held in the MPH. As the teachers entered the enormous and stunning hall, designated students were already waiting at the doorsteps to hand out beautifully trimmed flowers to all of the teachers that passed by. As soon as all the flowers have been given out to all respective teachers, the emcees of the day began their exuberant speech. Soon the hall was filled with exhilaration. The first presentation was a dance performed by Fang Ze Zeng accompanied by the song ‘Invaders Must Die’. It was an extraordinary and magnificent dance performance. Next, Neo Baker delivered an iconic song ‘My Way’, popularised 10

by Frank Sinatra. His voice was simply amazing and he managed to put his own charm to the song that successfully touched the hearts of all teachers and students. Ms. Judith was then invited up on the stage. She delivered short but meaningful poetic lines about teachers. Entertainment then filled the stage again. First we had Jeanette and Janice who sang ‘Titanium’, full of emotion and vigour. This was followed by Alvin, the comic relief. He mimicked the role of Mr Russell with such talent and in amusing situations. For the closing ceremony, Ms. Sharizan sang solo on behalf of all the teachers to the students present on that day. Her melodious voice touched everyone’s heart. At the end of the song, everyone burst out with thunderous applause and cheers.

n my opinion, Taylorian’s Rhapsody was definitely a highlight of the year. The production was a culmination and showcase of talent from across the school. It is one of the rare occasions where the Primary and Secondary schools work hand in hand to bring together a major event like this. The chosen theme for Taylorian’s Rhapsody 2018 was “Broadway Classics”. It featured tunes from Broadway hits such as The Phantom Of The Opera, Wicked, Cats and many more. A range of colourful and unique performances were showcased by the performing arts team. Notable performances include the rock rendition of songs from The Phantom Of The Opera, Matilda medley from the junior voices, a ballet and rhythmic gymnastic take on the Jellicle Ball from Cats and the finale, the Greatest Showman Medley which included both choir and band. I am really glad and grateful to have been apart of this event.

Initially I was a bit hesitant when I was approached to arrange and conduct pieces for the orchestra. But through hard work and perseverance which included attending countless practices and rehearsals with the orchestra and choir, I think the entire team managed to create a show that was both memorable and meaningful. Of course, the journey is more meaningful than the destination, so I’m really happy to have been given opportunities and challenges such as this. I am extremely thankful for Ms Rebecca and the entire performing arts faculty for their support and hard work. Finally, I hope that the tradition of an annual Taylorian’s Rhapsody may continue in the future at Taylor’s International School Puchong. I also encourage other students who are interested in music or performing arts in general to seek opportunities to join events like these as a stepping stone for your own character building and personal growth. Last but not least, I believe that with the support from the school, the success of this year’s performing arts showcase may be echoed in the years to come.

“Merdeka, merdeka, merdeka!” On the 29th of August 2018, our school celebrated the birth of our nation, Malaysia. We celebrated our identity as the people of our country and our hopes and dreams for Malaysia. “Merdeka” means independence, and the special assembly and activities were held for our Merdeka Day. In the morning, the whole of secondary flooded the Multipurpose Hall for the Merdeka celebration. The assembly started with performances from fellow students of the beautiful culture of Malaysia. Reysha from Year 10 performed a beautiful traditional Indian dance, Alvin from Year 11 gave a speech about Malaysia’s rich history and recited a Malay poem, or “puisi”. Afterwards, there was a sajak recital and a group of KS4 students took the stage to perform an authentic traditional Malay dance. Another group of girls from KS3 performed a graceful Chinese fan dance. The performance section of the assembly concluded with a touching rendition of the song “Sejahtera Malaysia” by Neo Baker from Year 11 and his surprise guest star Puan Nor. Nearing the end of the assembly, there was a special announcement by Mr. Russell about a brainchild of his and Ms. Judith. We were going to contribute to the social media activity participated by people from all over the country for Hari Merdeka, to make #proudtobemalaysian trend internationally! As a side note, we were also quite excited when we were allowed to use our phones during the first two hours of school, which is very rare. We were tasked with going to our designated areas and posting on social media photos and videos to express our patriotism and love for Malaysia. Many of our fellow students came up with amazing ideas, and we were all extremely happy for the chance to have fun with our friends and teachers, and just to let loose a little. Merdeka Day has always been a special and meaningful date for us, signifying the day our country became an independent nation. We were all very glad that the school provided us with a chance to express just how much we love Malaysia. By: Tan Jing (9P)

fter joining TISPC in 2017, I have had great pleasure in leading the Primary School through a period of extensive and positive change. This change is and will continue to have a profoundly positive impact on our learners and enable TISPC continue to grow its reputation as a high quality education provider. Schools are, and should be, a place of constant change and improvement. In this respect TISPC is no different so this year has seen changes across the Primary school in a number of areas as we continue to challenge ourselves to be the very best. This has included the inevitable movement in staff, reviewing how we communicate with parents and continuing to develop the curriculum and its delivery. As a result of our continued partnership with Fieldwork Education, from January 2019 all Primary students will undertake the International Primary Curriculum with the Early Years introducing the preceding programme; The Early Years International Curriculum. The primary team has been kept very busy with a range of activities and events this year including assemblies, sports days and educational excursions. This year saw a very successful KS1/Reception Sports Day following feedback the previous year from parents. This included giving children the opportunity to participate in six events across a range of sporting disciplines. KS2 also modified their sports day to allow parents more opportunity to go out onto the field and watch the events from a closer perspective. The feedback from these changes was overwhelmingly positive and we will continue to look at ways of developing Sports Days again for next year. Class trips are always a popular part of any year with the students. It is a great opportunity to make real life connections between the learning in the classroom and the wider world. Across all of Primary, there have been many opportunities for the students to escape the classroom for the day and get a chance to experience their learning in a community setting. This has included everything from the Nursery visit to ‘Farm In The City’ to the upper KS2 Residential overnight camping trips. We will continue to find the very best real world experiences for our students as we make learning in the classroom come alive.

Assemblies have been another key part of our every day business that allows children to develop their presentation skills and build confidence in public speaking and performing. Key cultural events have seen more opportunity for students to present during Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali festivals with special school assemblies taking place at these times. Class assemblies continue to prove popular with our families as an opportunity to share in their children’s learning and see them perform in front of a larger audience. We will continue to develop these and look at how they can be used to create stronger home-school partnerships. 2018 has been filled with many memorable events. With the risk of missing out on others, I would like to highlight two of my personal favourite events of the year. The ‘International Day” was a fabulous celebration of diversity and a beautiful example of a true community event organised by both parents and members of staff. The ‘Rock Bottom’ primary musical in the third term showcased the talent that we have in our school. It was an absolutely joy to watch the children sing, dance and act in the 4 shows. The collaboration between the performing arts department and the Primary faculty brought something quite special to the stage! With so many great things already taking place, there is still always room to introduce new initiatives and develop our Primary school further. One major focus point for 2019 is the relocation and upgrading of our Early Years Facilities so as to offer the most relevant and enjoyable learning experiences to our youngest learners. The school has taken on board a specialist consultant and visited Tier 1 and other premium schools’ Early Years departments as part of our development plans. Much of the development work will take place over the December holiday with more following in early 2019. This promises to be a truly unique facility that will ensure the best possible learning start to the school careers of all children in the EY phase. We are already planning for projects and events for the year 2019 which promises to be an exciting and prosperous year for our school . I am very much looking forward to the next year and I hope you do to!

BOOK WEEK

very year, TISPC organizes a special week dedicated to books. This is called Book Week. The purpose of Book Week is for the Primary and the Early Years to work together to promote reading and celebrate the power of books to inspire and spark imaginations. This year, there were many interesting and enjoyable activities throughout the week. Among the events were: ‘Stop, Drop and Read’ - Teachers and students Stop, Drop and Read for 15 minutes daily from 10:00am - 10:15am. Students brought a storybook from home and kept it in their class for the whole of Book Week. Door Display Competition. Class teachers chose a storybook to read to the students with a selected theme. Parents, class teachers and students decorated the back door of the classroom with much creativity. The competition was judged by Mr. David Flint and Mr. Marco. Prizes were given to each year level. It was so great to see their cooperation and teamwork as well as the wonderful displays done by them. Create a Bookmark. Students created a bookmark to exchange with a friend in their class. They were required to include the title “Happy Book Week 2018.” On their bookmark. They exchanged the bookmark on the last day of Book Week after assembly. Crazy Reading Photo Competition. Students took a photo of themselves reading in the most craziest and unusual way possible. The photos were displayed at the Atrium. Prizes were given to different levels (EY,Y1&2,

Y3&4, Y5&6). It was so interesting to see their wild and vast imaginations. This will instil the idea in students that reading can be fun too! Authors/Parents/Grandparents story time. We had authors, parents and grandparents who eagerly came and read their own favourite storybooks to their child’s year level during their CCA time. It was such a joy to witness this event. Buddy and Class teachers reading. Older students paid a visit to the younger students to read to them their favourite storybooks arranged by the class teachers. On the last day of Book Week, class teachers also read their favourite storybook to a different class. The students were so intrigued and kept asking for more. Charity book drive/ Book Fair. Teachers, students and parents graciously donated their books and swapped books for the needy. The books were donated to an orphanage home. There was also a book fair for three days at the Atrium. A timetable was arranged for each class to visit this book fair. There was definitely a variety of books for the students to buy and it was a great turnout. Book Week Parade and Assembly. On the last day Friday, 2nd March 2018, teachers and students dressed up in their favourite book character. The parade began at the Atrium, followed by walking to the cafeteria then they walked towards the basketball court and then entered the MPH hall. There was an assembly with performances by the students and also a prize giving ceremony by Mr. David Flint. The students and teachers were most definitely a great sport as they came in various costumes and really looked the part.

he much awaited Annual Primary School Sports Days were held in June for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 students. The fantastic turnout from the parents and the pleasant weather were the perfect boost for the students on their special day. The students entered into the spirit of the occasion in a grand way with a warm up taking place in the form of Zumba in the MPH before stretches were conducted. The Principal and Head of Primary, Mr David Flint and Mr Marco Damhuis, opened the ceremony with some motivational words. Our Key Stage 1 students competed in events including sprints, sack races, obstacle races and tee ball throw. Key Stage 2 took part in more conventional

Athletics events such as high jump, sprint race and three spring jump. Some of these events were related to the KLISS (Kuala Lumpur International School Sports) programme which the school elite sports teams are a member of. This gave students an element of inclusion and understanding as they had practised for these events during their PE lessons. Enjoyment and fun was had by all and it was great to see the parents and children alike being involved in the races, whether it be total commitment from the children or the motivation and enthusiasm given off by parents. The day ended with Mr. Marco Damhuis congratulating the winners with medals and certificates.

Nienke De Jong ASSISTANT HEAD EARLY YEARS & KEY STAGE 1

s I have only arrived in term 3 I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself.

My name is Nienke de Jong and previously I worked in the international field of education in The Netherlands, Indonesia, Nigeria and Russia. I have been in a variety of educational roles for over 18 years and have led professional development workshops and webinars about the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) for Fieldwork Education in London and Singapore on a variety of occasions.

I was very impressed with performances of the children in public speaking, dance and sports. I am very impressed by the dedication and passion of our learners which clearly shows through their expression of themselves and the way they make meaning of the world around them. The Early Years team is very excited to start the implementation of the IEYC (International Early Years Curriculum) which will be the precursor of the IPC to ensure a continuum for our learners as well as tailoring it to the specific needs of Early Years brain development.

I have arrived here with my husband Maurice who has worked as a swimming coach and is supporter of everything sporty. We have been exploring the world together and are excited to be settling into Malaysia.

We have attended the IEYC course in Singapore and are in close contact with Fieldwork Education as well as our family of schools to ensure rigour when rolling out the new curriculum.

It is always a challenge when moving to new places, learning together with new people and adapting to new situations. My experience with the way new people are being welcomed into Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s International School Puchong is one that showed the core values of the place that I am so keen on getting to know better.

We will communicate our goals and plans with the learning community so that we can celebrate our successes and share learning with you throughout.

The arrival of new leadership can also be challenging for the team and cohort of parents and therefore a good communication is very important. I was delighted to see that so many parents have shown great attendance at the coffee morning so that we could get to know each other. Many parents have come to introduce themselves. This is very much appreciated from my side as I believe that creating a learning community is very important to craft the right circumstances for learning. It is a joined journey. As the first weeks have flown by I am starting to learn about Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s International School Puchong. I have attended my very first Merdeka Day which showed me the rich culture of Malaysia. I had a taster of a variety of assemblies which gave me insight in the RECIPE and how the children showing global citizenship by fundraising for people who need help. 20

Year 1 and Year 2 are already in the middle of their getting to grips with the IPC and I have seen it in full swing with Entry and Exit Points, real life learning experiences, making links with the community, research from children and recording their learning in a variety of ways. Parents who I talked to are very supportive about this new curriculum and they are telling me that their children are very excited and are talking about their learning. Parents see the importance of the development of personal, academic and international dimensions. Learning is a dynamic process and therefore the next academic year we will anchor good practices and evolve our knowledge, skills and understanding of learning even further. I am looking forward to our shared learning journey and aim to create a powerful KS1 and EY learning community for the coming academic year.

David Hallas DEPUTY HEAD - CURRICULUM KEY STAGE 2

he 4th Year at TIS Puchong has been one of continual positive development. We have been lucky enough to welcome some excellent staff into the Key Stage 2 home rooms. Ms. Vio & Ms. Jayne have injected some youthful energy and innovative ideas into the team and Ms. Chin & Ms. Arfah have provided their experience and level headedness to help drive the group forward. They have been supported by some fantastic learning support staff; Ms. Marini has joined in Year 5 as well as Mr. Munir in Year 4 (also the TISPC Tiger at the Merdeka Day Assembly.) We look forward to moving on to next year with our existing staff to create the best learning environment. I have been really pleased with the implementation of our exciting and active new curriculum throughout Years 3-5. The International Primary Curriculum is an interactive learning experience which has allowed our children to gain better knowledge, skills and understanding whilst also really enjoying themselves. Years 3&4 started the IPC right from the get go in January with some really exciting topics. Year 3 had great fun learning about Chocolate and where it is from, I remember how excited the children were during the chocolate tasting station in their Exit Point, I was also impressed with their knowledge of the geography of chocolate. Year 4 sprang into action with a

disaster simulation at the start of their Active Planet Unit I still remember Ms. Jacqui being bandaged up by our Year 4 students who were pretending to be relief doctors after a natural disaster. Great fun had by all! I was also really pleased that the school gained permission to start the IPC a little earlier than planned in Year 5. We started in Term 3 and have had a great time in a topic called Bake It! I have enjoyed seeing the science side of the topic and know the children have enjoyed learning about the Carbon Dioxide behaved and how solids dissolve. The Assemblies team have been working hard on improving the format of the celebrations this year. They have introduced a number of new measures to improve the accessibility for parents; the RSVP has allowed us to ensure that there are enough chairs for parents to use and to allow the more digitally minded to add the event straight to your online personal calendar and the increased number of events has strengthened our Primary School community. The children have been really engaged with their performances in such events such as Merdeka Day and they enjoyed â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;high-fivingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; our new Merdeka Day mascot, Rimau the TISPC Tiger. I am looking forward to a lot more events and experience to involve both our parents and children in the next academic year!

ow quickly the year has disappeared! And what fun we have all had! Excursions, cultural celebrations and sporting events have all contributed to a diversified and exciting year. I believe there is always something special about teaching in the Early Years section of any school. I have decided it is watching special ‘light bulb’ moments occur, when a young child realizes they are able to read their first book, sound out and spell a word correctly, write their first sentence and understand numbers can be used in a variety of ways to tell us about the world we live in. Daily this occurs and the smile of achievement that passes over the children’s faces is priceless. In Term 2 the IPC Curriculum was introduced into Years 1 and 2. This inquiry based programme enables the children to explore, question, discover and share their findings with their peers, before exploring further. A fantastic way to learn! Year 1 After completing four weeks on ‘Brainwave’, Year 1 completed a unit called ‘The Magic Toyshop’. Incorporating many subject areas, the children explored how toys are made and have changed over time. Graphs of favourite toys were completed and stories were written. Science experiments were conducted looking at the features of various toys, not only exploring the materials they were made of, but also how they perform under differing variables. The exit point was amazing. The confidence of all the children to discuss their work and share their knowledge indicated deep understanding.

Term 3 started with ‘From A to B’. With each class choosing a mode of transport, entry point was a fun filled morning where the classes made planes, land vehicles and boats. The continuing learning experiences promoted research and informed conversations. Year 2 Year 2’s also started their IPC journey with ‘Brainwave’, then became totally involved with ‘Circus Comes to Town’. In this topic, they explored the history of the circus and the various attributes circus performers need to be a part of the troupe. The field trip to the Moscow Circus was certainly a highlight of the unit. The private performance had the children fascinated and excited. It certainly gave them some ideas for their own exit point performance. Term 3 started with ‘Super Humans’. In this unit, the children were introduced to the various body systems and how they operate. The scientific investigations led to many questions as they were able to make connections between the information they gathered and how their body works. Then it was onto the topic ‘Green Fingers’. Inquiries were made into plants and how to promote optimum growth. Learning and fun going hand in hand! A perfect recipe! As you would appreciate all of this doesn’t just happen. It requires a great deal of professional dedication. In this regard, we are most fortunate to have a fantastic group of teachers who so frequently go above and beyond to ensure the children’s learning experiences are meaningful and enjoyable. I thank them most sincerely for their hard work.

We began Term one with a focus continuing the development of the school’s core values through lessons about the Taylor’s RECIPE. We then started our first IPC topic called Brainwaves, which looked at how people learn and developed our growth mindsets. This was then followed by our next topic on Chocolate, which taught the children about the history of chocolate and ‘fair trade’.

In Term 3 we looked at the ‘Generation Game’ in IPC. It was interesting to learn about different generations and the types of games they use to play compared to what they play in today’s times. The students were able to share both in the entry point and exit point. Throughout the year the students have been developing their research skills and can find and share information from their research.

In Term Two we saw the first overnight camp at school for Year 3. The students and teachers had an amazing time sleeping in tents and the fun activities that were organised for the

With the introduction of the IPC, in Term One, saw the students first learn about the brain and how learning happens. This also taught the students about growth and fixed mindsets and which one allows for the development of new learning. This was followed by the next IPC unit of natural disasters. The students learnt how to deal in a Natural Disaster and were able to role play in their Entry Point the different jobs that would need to be done to help survivors.

During Term Two, the students went on an overnight camp to Radiant Retreats which was a lot of fun. This was linked to their IPC learning on ‘Adventures and Explorers’ and saw the children river trekking, using a compass in orienteering and learning basic survival skills such as which plants to use for healing, building fishing traps, basic first aid, how to make shelter and make a fire. In Term three the students have been learning about ‘Saving The World’. They are students are learning about rainforests, the people, plants and animals that live and use the Rainforest, while also learning the importance of protect this natural resource from deforestation. The students also made links to the natural resources and forests in Malaysia and thought about how they could use their new knowledge to protect and save forests and animals in this country.

tudents learn best when learning is active, when they are engaged in handson classroom games and activities, and involved in what they are learning. Scientists believe that when children use all of their senses it helps the brain create pathways that make it easier and quicker to retain information. Below are some pictures of Year 5 students learning in Mathematics, Science, and English, using hands-on classroom games and activities Mathematics - students work in groups when developing knowledge, using manoeuvres to enhance and explore new learning; when displaying skills students work solo to demonstrate understanding. Science - during learning sessions, students observe and show understanding using presentations, they used scientific questions as a basis to their scientific investigations. English - Reading is strongly encouraged in Year 5 during Big Read, Guided Reading and Library sessions. During English study units in Year 5, we use the ‘Talk for Writing’

approach; which enables students to imitate the key language they need for a particular topic orally before they try reading and analysing the text. Through fun activities that help them rehearse the tune of the language they need, this is then followed by shared writing to show them how to craft their writing, students are helped to write in the same style; then finishing each topic by inventing their own writing, using the structure that they have studied. International Primary Curriculum Launch Year 5 team were really excited to launch the IPC this year in Term 3. The students first unit was called the ‘Brainwave’. The purpose of the unit was for students to discover how we use our brains to learn lots of new and different things – gaining the knowledge, skills and understanding that we will need to become successful adults. The ‘Brainwave’ unit began with an entry point that introduced the students to the new theme, with engaging and thought provoking activities to set the scene of study. The students completed a carousel of activities, firstly they had to complete each activity without any given instruction, then after a short time they were given some knowledge of how to develop the skill. Lots of brains were busy learning during this Entry Point.

YEAR 6 LEADER

am pleased to report that Year 6 students have had a solid year of learning in 2018. It has been outstanding to see students embracing the ‘Learning Zone’ by trying something unknown and developing new knowledge, skills and understanding in different areas of the curriculum. A ‘growth mindset’ allowed students to see that challenges and learning are opportunities, and that failure is an opportunity for growth. Since joining TIS Puchong at the start of March, I have had many opportunities to see students at work and at play. Our students have put in effort, been guided by excellent, committed teachers, and their persistence, passion and strive for excellence should be noted. Added to this, they exhibit the key values of respect for themselves and others, integrity, and open communication. Viewing students talking and working collaboratively, supporting and challenging each other created a dynamic learning experience – leading to an enjoyable environment. As with any growing school, we have added new staff to our year level. Ms. Gavi joined us at the end of Term 2, taking over 6U. Ms. Gavi brought with her experience in integrating curriculum, knowledge of all key curriculum areas, and enthusiasm for engaging and challenging students. Ms. Ashley arrived early Term 3 as a graduate co-teacher, and within a fortnight she knew all the students’ names and was supporting students in all classes. Sadly, Ms. Hong retired after working at TIS for many years, and we wished her well with celebrations and tears. New students have also joined throughout the year, and it is a testament to the other students how well they have been welcomed and supported. I arrived during Term 1 and learnt from the students the history of the Vikings. They also developed their knowledge of natural disasters (earthquakes and volcanoes), water and weather. Students were writing persuasive letters and debating each other, developing their oral language. In Science, investigations centred around classifying animals and flora. Maths skills were honed through concrete and pictorial workshops, providing a base for new learning. 54

During Term 2, students used the framework of World War 2 to develop their writing skills, reading comprehension and general knowledge of history and geography. Our class trip to Penang was a huge success, and students consolidated their understandings by visiting the War Museum and Fort Cornwallis. We began our ‘Transition into Secondary” programme with classes in science, drama, DT and Maths. We celebrated Cultural diversity by learning about another country and sharing our own nationalities. Term 3 arrived in no time, and students worked diligently to scaffold their knowledge in all key learning areas, ready for GL testing. Linking the history of Malaysia to the celebrations of a new government on Merdeka Day was very interesting, as was celebrating Deepavali. Our end of year overnight trip to Janda Baik was a fabulous opportunity for students to work together in teams, enjoying camping and outdoor activities. I wish all the students future success as they embark on their secondary education. Continue to strive for excellence by putting in effort, ask for guidance and use your initiative. Be positive, curious and enthusiastic about what the future may hold for you. You have made me very proud.

STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT

hat a pleasure it has been working with so many enthusiastic students and teachers to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;make a changeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to our school, and to the local and global community. In April, a student from each grade was elected by their peers to be the class representative. Through their hard work, enterprise and creativity, much has been achieved. Thanks also to Ms. Kalai and Ms. Komal for their dedication and support.

Student councilors in Year 1-3 created posters for our cafeteria area about maintaining an enjoyable environment by keeping the area clean. Year 3-6 students are also encouraging students by awarding house points to classmates who listen attentively in assemblies and contribute to an enjoyable environment.

Student initiatives have included a charity project called Titian Kasih food collection, whereby students brought dry goods from home to be donated to disadvantaged families. The Make Over society, an NGO headed by one of our primary staff, distributed the many food packages to those in need in our local community. Another popular idea was wearing free dress on your birthday. Students surveyed their class, analysed the responses, and then presented their proposal to Mr Flint, who approved it and congratulated the students on their idea. It is wonderful to wish students birthday cheer as they enjoy their special day at TIS Puchong.

Pyjama Day was carefully planned to provide a fun event that assisted our global neighbours in a time of great need. I am humbled by the donations raised by the primary school which surpassed our goal of RM 5000, and at last count was a total of RM6004! The funds raised will be split between the two appeals. We look forward to continuing to help others and promote international mindedness. Our passion is to make TISPC an even better place, by stepping up and be the change. Written by Ms Tania.

CCA REPORTS EARLY YEARS & PRIMARY

his is the first year Chinese calligraphy and painting was formed as one of the primary CCA activities in line with TISPC aim in providing holistic development of pupils which this CCA helps to foster; an appreciation of art from a different perspective. At the beginning stage, this CCA aims to inculcate students’

interest in the art of Chinese strokes, Chinese pictographs and Chinese brush paintings with basic brush holding and manipulation skills. On top of that, this CCA hopes to encourage international mindedness through sharing of life and belief about art.

his year we have walked the journey of gaining understanding of the diversified cultures and lifestyles of the world through arts and crafts. YEAR 4 ARTS & CRAFTS

t has been great to see the student’s enthusiasm for every term on the netball court practising their shooting, footwork and passing ball skills. They worked together to progress the ball up the court using different passes. Some children showed excellent skills in defence. It was a fantastic experience for the Year 5 and Year 6 students who joined Netball CCA this year.

he importance of Performing Arts in education is significant in many ways. In the Performing Arts CCA, learners are exposed to opportunities that engages the creative side of the brain. Learning in Performing Arts CCA is highly learner centred where learners have ample chances to work in groups which promotes the development of collaboration and social skills. In particular, the Year 4 learners explored various Performing Arts activities including expressing their emotions without words, getting into character by creating hand animals, planning, writing, and performing a story that they have created! These activities provide a platform for learners to showcase their creativity in expressing their thoughts and feelings besides using just words. Year 4 learners also learned different techniques and knowledge about performing on stage such as how to project our volume on stage, elements of drama, as well as making stories with shadow animals. In short, learners develop various skills that are essential to prepare them better for future learning while having lots of fun expressing their thoughts in different ways.

YEAR 4 PERFORMING ARTS

t the Languages and Maths Club, the Year 4 learners have been exposed to various fun and engaging activities relating to English and Maths. Some of the activities that had been carried out in the area of English are Boggle and Taboo. While these activities might be familiar to some learners, it was still a great deal of fun for everyone as they made complicated words that exist in the English language or found creative ways to describe a word to their friends without saying the ‘taboo’ words. Learners also had a splendid time reflecting on how the school term was like for them and expressing it in the form of a poem. As for the area of Maths, learners played board games, that were topic-specific, and created their own games such as cootie catchers or ‘Figure Me Out’ posters with Maths questions for their friends to solve. The intention of these activities is to strengthen learners’ understanding of the topics learnt during Maths lessons while having fun at the same time. They did not just challenge themselves, but also did the same for their friends. All in all, learners had a fantastic time engaging their minds, collaborating with their friends and having lots of laughters!

YEAR 4 LANGUAGES & MATH Teacher: Ms Jayne.

otal 24 students joined this CCA who lead by Mr. Zulkarnain and Mr. Azwan. First day on CCA, we do pre-assessment to determine which level the students either beginner, intermediate or advance depend on student swimming skill. Type of assessment that we have done it with them are freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. Results from the assessment around half from all students are still beginner and intermediate level. Then following week, we separate them by level (Mr. Azwan – Advance level, Mr. Zulkarnain – intermediate and beginner level). Start from that day we continue focus corrected on student strokes, teach them from scratch and polish their talent on swimming. For beginner level, at least we have taught and improved students on freestyle swim. So far most of them able to swim freestyle without kick board for 25metre. For intermediate level, we have improved on their freestyle,

breaststroke also backstroke. Every CCA time we focused on one technique to other to make sure all of our CCA students be able to swim correctly. For advance level, mostly we focused on distance swim and speed rather than teach them about how to swim. Some of the advance level also are from our primary swim team. Other than that, we teach them about technical part during the competition like diving also underwater dive. All the student effort during CCA are very awesome. Because of that before 10minutes end of class we give them play time which them choose to play water polo. All of them are very enjoy and excited during CCA time. As we can see swimming bring lots of benefit to us like release stress/tension, promote healthy body, promote relaxation, burn fat & calorie, and much more. So, it is very good activity for students to make sure them get a healthy lifestyle.

s a new CCA, the Dodgeball club faced significant challenges this term. Among the 26 Year 5 and 6 students in the Dodgeball club, many of them experienced playing Dodgeball for the first time in term 2. Despite the hurdles faced, the resilience and passion of the students managed to take the newly formed Dodge ball club, and turn it into a club of energetic individuals, eager to learn more about the sport, and strive for greatness.

During the first few weeks, everyone managed to pick up the rules faster than expected, and made not only their teachers proud of their achievement and development, but also gave themselves a sense of pride and accountability for their own learning. We are proud to say that, through our observation, it seems that students have become more confident and capable in playing Dodgeball after only a few weeks of club activities.

We hope that we continue to grow into a club that will make the students who were the foundation of the club proud to have been part of something bigger, and the students who are part of the club in every term feel like they belong in an enjoyable environment.

Having an art club is very rewarding. The club has 20 participants. The energy these students bring is amazing. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. Children become involved in shaping their environments through art and design activities. The aims of Art Club are: To enable children to record from first-hand experience and from imagination and to select their own ideas to use in their work. hat an amazing year for the Secondary school with so many highlights to identify, but perhaps the most fundamental being the achievements and attainment grades of our Year 11 learners. When we reviewed the IGCSE results for 2017/2018, we knew the foundations were good from the May and June examinations, but we were not sure what to expect from the overview of all subjects across the Secondary school. To achieve 85% ‘C’ and above on all grades was outstanding for our first set of results, but the 56% ‘A to A*’ was just incredible. We are so proud of our learners and what they achieved as this particular result surpassed many other well established high level International schools in not just Malaysia, but around the world. This obviously sets a high level of expectation for future years and particularly next year. Learning continues to be the centre focus for all we do at TISPC. It underpins our vision, mission and planning. We believe that we are all learners regardless of our roles or responsibilities and that together we can achieve more. To this end we have introduced more learners awards this year and established a clear pathway for excellence in learning, setting out role models who have achieved and identifying those who are continuing to strive on that ongoing pathway. We celebrate our learning achievements together as we extend our potential individually and as a school.

There have been an increasing number of opportunities for showcasing talents and skills this year and each time we have been amazed at the competencies shown by our learners. Both the Sports department and Performing Arts department have seen learners participate and excel in many areas showing high levels of skills and talents in each case. Together with the increasing opportunities for leadership within the learning context, this cements the holistic development that Taylor’s stands by, excellence in all we do. As we are now building upon the foundations of the past 4 years, it is now possible to see and extend further the enterprising awareness of all our learners at TISPC. We are continually motivated by the creativity of our learners and constantly aiming to provide them with the opportunities to extend their entrepreneurial skills. To this end, it is now time to move forward even more strongly into the use of emerging technologies and relevant industries like robotics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and programming. Together with the dynamic business interests from all areas of our school community, 2019 will be an exciting year to watch as we combine the knowledge and experience from parents, local businesses and teachers in order to open even more doors of opportunity. With all that has been achieved from 2018, I cannot wait for what happens during the next academic year as I am quite sure it will be just as if not more exciting.

AIRSPRAY was our school’s second musical production; it was a wonderful experience filled with joy, laughter, music and dancing. I was fortunate enough to play the role of Seaweed in the production.

I am confident to say that this was the best experience in my time at TISPC. I am also extremely proud to say that we nailed this musical production! Everyone did well, they sang and danced with all their might. We even managed to handle unexpected situations professionally on stage. Behind the wonderful melodies and rhythm, is the hard work of the entire team. To say that the process was difficult would be a huge understatement. It wasn’t easy at all. It was not what I expected, reciting lines from the script, singing notes from the scores and dancing to the beat. It wasn’t as simple as High School Musical had made it seem like. It was difficult, but also oh so wonderful. When I found out that I got the role of Seaweed, I thought my struggles would be with time management. But it wasn’t, it was to be with the character - Seaweed. I will be very honest that I am not a “cool kid”. In fact I am a nerd! Seaweed is the total opposite of me, he was carefree, he was wild and outgoing, he doesn’t care about anything. I had to learn how to let go of myself, to ignore the comments from my friends, and immerse myself into the character. At the moment on stage, I am Seaweed, I am no longer Ken. It was a great life lesson and experience.

I am thankful to have Mr Ian Schoeman to help us. I have never had drama lessons, but he is such an amazing drama teacher. He helped me find my way to be Seaweed. I am also thankful to the crew who had helped me immensely too like my friends Janice, Claire and Rachel. HAIRSPRAY was a huge challenge for us, we had to get everything ready within a short amount of time. The cast had to learn how to become the character and at the same time we had to learn how to sing and dance. It was a challenge to all of us mentally and physically and it was a challenge we have proudly accomplished. I was glad that I decided to join HAIRSPRAY because it was the best experience of my life. I was able to make new friends and learn lots of new things. I am looking forward to the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third musical production next year!

n one of the hottest days of the year the whole of Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s International School Puchong Secondary school travelled to Panasonic Stadium together to celebrate the annual house-based Sports Day. The day began with a march around the stadium waving house flags they had created and built the atmosphere, which was electric! Competitors from each of the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 4 houses Red, Blue, Green and Yellow participated in a range of athletic events accumulating points for their house. It was particularly pleasing to see so much effort from both the athletes and others competing to get points for their house. Similar to the Primary Sports Day, the events were from both the KLISS programme we are signed up to and actual Olympic events such as High Jump, Shot Putt, Javelin and Discus throw. As well as field events the students also participated in the track events of 100m - 1500m which was very competitive. All students enjoyed a fantastic day and cheered on their houses. We had some outstanding performances from some gifted athletes but the main pleasantry to take away from the day was the teamwork, togetherness and inclusion on display from all our fantastic students.

take this opportunity to congratulate all the Year 7 students for your efforts this year. You have come a long way since the start of the 2018 school year. Although many of you have said you were ready for secondary school, you have also said that the secondary school provided you with various challenges. For some, the challenges were getting used to timetables and moving rooms, whilst for others it was organising yourselves in order to complete and submit homework on time. There were different challenges for different students. You are about to enter the next stage of your schooling and you will begin to consider your future and plan accordingly. First and foremost, I truly understand how daunting the change from Primary to Secondary might be. At Taylor’s International School, we aim to provide a structured and planned transition in order to ease pupils through what can be a worrying phase of their lives. As the Year 7 Coordinator, I’m pleased to say that the transition workshop which we carried out in 2017 had been fruitful and provided a stepping stone for the Year 7 students to achieve their full potential this year.

New Year Door Decoration by collaborating amongst their tutor groups to produce a creative output. Fun, Colour and Food! A great celebration during the Cultural Diversity Week at TISPC. It gives me great pride to see our lovely Year 7 students and their teachers working together to promote the diversity that exists within our school. Next, the students also learnt about building positive relationships and cherishing these relationship through restorative practises during their PSHE lessons. Puberty Talk was also given by our very own experienced teachers to the students as a part of their PSHE lesson. The students gained a lot of useful information about the emotional and physical changes of puberty for female and male students.

As your coordinator, I am very proud of your achievements and responsiveness to undertaking challenges, problem solving and working together. Many of you have come to realise the importance of using your diaries and some of you have had a go at creating and using electronic diaries.

Another main highlight for this year will be the Super Camp which took place from the 12th Sept’18 to 14th Sept’18 at Morib Gold Coast resort. Super Camp provides a highly engaging residential experience where our students manage to gain valuable social, leadership, communication and other essential skills. It is notable that confidence build throughout the camp as the students apply their new learning and life skills in Super Camp’s supportive environment. As the kids journeyed through this trip, they realized that any barriers can be overcome if they managed to combat their FIMAGE ( Fear of Image). A huge thanks to Mr. Devan, Ms. Shamini and Ms. Pavithrah who made this Super Camp experience a great success for our Year 7 students.

Throughout the year, we had many engaging Key Stage 3 assemblies whereby we joined venture with Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 to highlight the practise of RECIPE, the core values which embeds all that we do at TISPC. Besides this, the Year 7 classes enthusiastically took part in the Chinese

Pavithrah A/P Thirumoorthy YEAR 8 LEADER

his year has been an amazing learning curve for our students, they have trooped like champions from Year 7 to Year 8. This year provided a great opportunity for students to take up leadership roles as they transitioned gracefully from Year 7 to Year 8. This was prevalent largely during many occasions especially in welcoming new students to our school. Year 8, is the year group with the largest amount of new students intake throughout 2018. As the Head of Year 8, I take immense pride in the kindness and hospitality showcased by the Year 8 students who took it upon themselves and buddied their new classmates in welcoming them to the TISPC family. Some Year 8 students relished in shining in their respective interests as they enthusiastically took part in many events in 2018 to showcase their vivacious passion. To name a few, collectively as a class, students needed to put their hands together and work on door decorating competition for Chinese New Year celebration. Besides that, students put their research hats on to consolidate information on the assigned country and magically transformed their classrooms to one-stop global cultural experience during Diversity Week. Lastly, not forgetting our athletes who

diligently portrayed great sportsmanship throughout the year. As we work further keeping in mind initiatives to build character among their Year 8 students, 3 students from each year 8 class were selected by the tutors to be awarded certificates for best attitude, best leadership and best team player. These awards greatly boosts students confidence level and promotes positivity among the students One of the main highlights of the year was the Year 7 and 8 residential trip to Morib Gold Coast International resort from 12th to 14th of September 2018. We have joined forces with Quantum education (Supercamp) this year to give the students with learning tools and life skills that will be applied to every subject. In line with the aim of the trip, students have gained confidence and forged an even stronger bond in a friendship that will support and guide them in their daily life. Overall, it has been an outstanding growing year for Year 8 students. With all the winnings and lessons learned this year I hope it prepares the students to have a fruitful year in 2019.

s another school year draws to a close, we reflect back on the year and all the wonderful learning experiences the pupils have had in Year 9. It seems that only last week we were welcoming students to a new academic year and all that lay ahead. This year, we started with 150 students. The students have achieved so much this year, becoming more inquisitive and independent learners and also taking up leadership roles. These were all made possible by the Year 9 tutors who worked tirelessly and have been such important role models and mentors to their tutees throughout the year. To promote positive behaviour, three students from each class were selected for the following awards; Best Team Player, Best Behaviour and Best Leadership. They were given a certificate to acknowledge their achievement every term. We believe this will create a positive impact on the other students as they strive to gain these awards for themselves too.

In Term 2, the Year 9 pupils had to make an important decision concerning their IGCSE options and electives for the following year. Pertaining to that, a career workshop was set up and conducted by our school Counsellor to help the students decide their career pathway. The Year 10 student reps have also taken their initiatives by going into Year 9 CB sessions to help the students understand the details of each of the electives. On top of that, the school had conducted a briefing session specifically for parents to obtain more information about the options as well as an â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Options Eveningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for parents and students to meet the subject teachers in a Q & A session. I would like to once again congratulate students who have contributed towards the school in all areas. You have made all of us proud. I wish you all the best for next year and if you are leaving, good luck for your future endeavours! Finally, a special thanks to the Year 9 team. You have been amazing to work with.

s our academic year draws to a close we have much to celebrate and many happy memories.

Year 10 students have enjoyed another fabulous year in academic studies, sport, performing arts and charity. This year, we organized two workshops for Year 10 students to support and prepare them for the next year IGCSE examination. The “Study Sensei” and “Time Management” workshop run by Elevate Education is a programme that was delivered to improve study skills. 98% of the students have given good feedback and found the session really useful. We hope to continue the last workshop on next year. In addition, year 10 students were given opportunity to visit Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus and took part in a variety of workshops to introduce the different courses and areas of study they could select. This give them the opportunity to continue explore career opportunity, subject choices and programmes of interest to them. This year, the flow and the transition of the session were informative. Another remarkable moment was the community service project initiated by Ayer Holding and collaborated with Taylor’s Education Group to build furniture for the House

of Joy Children’s home. The event promotes learning through contribution which also in line with school value that learning should go beyond classroom setting. As a compliment, a certificate for their contribution is given for their heart work. Not forgetting the recent trip for year 10, they are 24 students went to Japan Niigata Technical High School for the cultural exchange experience. They were taking the opportunity to visit the Japanese student who came over to TISPC and this visit allowed students to learn some Japanese culture and knowledge about school life in Japan. Thank you Ms Rafferty who organised and planned the trip well. Over the summer break, I am working to screen through the result of 143 students and put into place some action at Term 3. The priority is to identify and help student improve further in the academic as well as their wellbeing in learning. We should always seek to do better; to challenge ourselves and our students to set the highest standards and achieve their ambitious goals. And it is always my pleasure to serve and support them in school. I wish that they will also feel the same like I do.

ach year is special in the life of the school and for this reason the yearbook is invaluable. It’s pages are filled with so many memories and images of happy and successful times spent in the TISPC Community. Once again it has been a year where our students participated in a myriad of activities.

We had the chance to part take in a diversity of workshops, which allowed the students to have an in-depth understanding of the different courses and areas of study they were offered upon graduation. This gave them the prospect to undertake and explore within their career expectations.

Throughout the year they have once again excelled in their academic, sporting, and cultural arenas, producing outstanding results, which cement their status outstandingly. Moving beyond these amazing achievements, 2018 has also been a year where several positive changes have occurred internally at our school. What I have had the privilege of seeing evolve this year has been a new surge of student voice, leadership, and unity within the school community amongst the Year 11.

Another astounding event we organised was a career session talk by our very own specialist teachers. This had given them an insight on the purpose of their schooling and career goals. This provides the pathway upon graduation when they embark into a new journey in their life. We had the opportunity to have the advice and experience of some guest speakers from Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. The students were given invaluable information and resources. They were encouraged to seek advice from them, such as the criteria of the courses and career pathways.

It has been a great pride to witness the Year 11s absorbed into the recent school musical “Hairspray”. There was a huge devotion and dedication by the students. It was obvious to me that we are improving every year, which is testament to the ongoing commitment of the students towards the Performing Arts team. Watching audiences respond to actors engaging with them directly was one of the great delights of the production. Apart from that, we were given the opportunity and were invited once again to visit Taylor’s University Lakeside

Indeed, it is really an honour to lead such an amazing year group. They have been a supportive learning community that have challenged themselves to achieve personal excellence and to develop as confident, caring, life-long learners positively engaged in our learning platform. Lastly, all great work is achieved with visualization of success and fruits of labour. Hence, I wish the Year 11 students the motivation and enthusiasm to achieve all that they want in the upcoming exams. I am looking forward to another busy year ahead of us.

ervice above self - a motto we live by here in Interact club. On June 17th, a remarkable moment in TISPC, interact club was born, marking it’s first in its name. A club known for its historical reputation for bringing both the joy and the philanthropist in a growing child. The fundamental of children being exposed to philanthropy at it’s finest and in the correct prescriptions is suitable for young children/adults. Here the exposure is just that. Ideally though it was our first year, we’ve accomplished so much together,if I do say so myself. With our aim of the 1st year to construct a supportive pedestal in which we strive to reach excellence & reaching gazingly with teamwork and with a little faith in building an outstanding establishment that sets the bars up high professionally for the many years to come ,like any started club we of course had a couple of faced challenges,all these growing problems that are what make up a flourishing club like ours. At the start of the interact year we targeted to a charitable year and a successful one as well. Truthfully enough we did achieve exactly that. But the numerous time we had days where we were confused or not really convinced that a particular plan was going to exceed our expectations, but we amalgamated our team and formed an event that not only satisfy the community but also it’s members, service=profits. JUL 17’ Our first official bake sale, that lasted for 2 days, what a hit! This was our milestone to a great year ahead. I remember thinking to myself: “well look at you, looks like the club is not gonna turn to ashes , even with your skill of not knowing what certain protocols are and basically hoping your pitch made the cut!!”- With that said,here I am today,not seeing any ashes .Although at then end of it all of us were drained, our blood sweat and tears and importantly the fundamental element of teamwork held proudly the achievement of our first minifundraising event . On to the next o n e

fundraising event the we had the CHRISTMAS CHARITY!, with, confidence and a suitable time of year to fit our next event in . NOV 17’, it was close to the end of the school year, now get conformable, all tuck in?, now this is tale like no other and one of the best memories we and I personally will always cherish. IN time for Christmas,we decided to give back to the community, even the furry ones! It was called “ The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year “,.With yet another success we were set on sending our charity collection from the bake sale,non-uniform day and gift giving service that we held for the past 2 weeks. So then we set off on our journey & it began to rain, chill frosted the air, red jackets pulled out,worn and so did a fighting spirit, we had loads of fun with some lovely high spirited K9’s, pet them, took some snazzy dog selfies and off we were to the next destination to spread joy, A Welfare home for single moms, orphans and underprivileged families . Despite all the splish-splash of the rain it was A Wonderful experience that everyone of us should feel. Indeed it was the most wonderful time of the year 2018, a year of goodbyes and hellos. We started of the year with love-FEB 18’ Valentines day Celebration,we offered rose,brownies and chocolate delivery service .With the sub-target to follow up to have our IU day this year and we’d realise to take on such a heavy topic such as “Empowerment”, we needed to have an introduction do the event so it won’t be a unmeaningful one because it was hard to comprehend .Empowerment is passion, my motive was to spread confidence and social understanding starting with the school, my believe was that everyone should feel empowered & not be afraid of the world or people they may encounter,in my opinion confidence is the key in life .Later on we celebrated teachers day by handing out beautiful fresh flowers as they entered the assembly hall. The joy on their faces proved to us that our gratitude towards them were much felt. In JULY 18’ we have our new set of board directors,to serve with the same level of professionalism that I have set up . Interact club is a well known establishment ,having said being the pioneers we set up the paradigm up high for other Interact-ers Finally I’ll like to add for the past 4 years of my high school experience and the 2 years of IC president has taught me that the achievements I have earned has built me up to how I look at the world at not how it was/is but how it could be.

Ayer Holdings Collaboration

s a blueprint laid out for the world’s ignorant and developing minds, Princess Diana, of Wales, had most notably uttered - “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” Charity work hails from the deepest corners of the heart; a sincere exudation of compassion, empathy and the act of giving. Those who engage in it are gifted with an overwhelming outburst of exaltation and satisfaction. It was on the 8th of July, 2018, that we, a handful of students from Year 9 and 10, had grabbed the opportunity to contribute to the local charity organizations. We gathered at Foreston, Bandar Bukit Puchong, at 9 in the morning. The subtle ambience lifted up our spirits to aim for the stars, and accomplish our mission that day. As soon as every one of us had arrived, the main supervisor Mr. Alan - briefed us regarding our objectives for the day,

as well as the safety procedures, plus a few easy-to-use tips, that would come in handy as we progress. We were split into four groups, each diversified with the two year groups. Two of the groups were assigned with the task of assembling a wooden food cabinet, whereas, the other two were to contrive a suite of dining furniture. We set to work, putting our skills to the test. Our motives were clear. Each one of our groups were supervised by proficient facilitators. Even as each of us had committed our minds and souls to the task, our senses of youthful exuberance hadn’t neglected. In between brief intervals, refreshments were served, by the workers from Ayer Holding, to boost up our zest. At lunchtime, we ceased all work for a quick bite while wiping away beads of sweat and recovering our jolly vibrancy. It was at about 5pm that we had achieved our intentions and retired for the day. The eventful day had concluded, with each of us going home with profound nostalgia. The day had bestowed several memories that we would soon chatter about at school, the next day.

We can say with great pride that a student at TISPC obtained the Cambridge Outstanding Learner Award for Top in the World for Mathematics. Ms Rajes speaks of her experience teaching this student and their peers; “I take great pride in my students’ achievements last year. I couldn’t ask for more. It is worth the effort to see students really learning and walking out of this school with an excellent grade.”

A team from TISPC won first place and one student also won the individual award. Our team organiser Mr Isaac speaks of the opportunity this gave students; “It was really encouraging to have our students appreciate Mathematics outside the classroom”. Students share their experiences... Esther Lim Jia Xin 90 Intermediate This year Mandarin lessons were full of excitement and very cheerful atmosphere in the classes. Teachers trained our confidence of speaking in front of our own class by letting us do a presentation. The fun part of these Mandarin lessons is how students caught the audience attention during presentations. I like Mandarin lessons because it’s my first language to communicate with people and my Mandarin teacher is easy to communicate with. I think Mandarin lesson can be improved by playing interesting games to make student enjoy the lesson. 96

Vidthya 9Y Novice I am fascinated by this language, Mandarin. The complex but “elegant” characters, the pronunciation topped off with the meaningful phrases. My Mandarin lesson seems to be a very enjoyable exploration into Chinatown; one of the few classes. I look forward to almost everyday. The pleasure of said lesson is that both the teacher and the lesson provide inspiring insights, while employing a series of jokes, videos and open minded discussions on the side. I favour the happy-go-lucky attributes of the class, teacher and my fellow classmates. Nevertheless, I would mention that the lesson could involve some team-building and sweat breaking games and activities, while also pursuing to learn the stimulating art of the Language. Zoe Loh Chi Yee 9H Advanced Mandarin lesson is certainly one of my favourite subjects. I’m always bubbling with excitement for most of the Mandarin lessons because they are enjoyable and interesting at the same time. We learn Mandarin through a variety of activities like presentations, speech and watching films to have a greater understanding. Our confident levels have also dramatically improved throughout the year. Besides, my Mandarin teacher, Ms Boey, is definitely a responsible and lovely teacher. She is concern about each other and every student’s progress, she will also give us feedbacks and motivations to move forward. I believe that Mandarin lessons are adored by a lot of students. I hope that everyone can undergo all these fun and inspiring Mandarin lessons. Rachel Ting Vay Syuen 10U Mandarin First language I managed to obtain a deeper understanding of the Chinese culture and history as a part of the lesson’s content, which nurtured my love for the subject along the journey. My teacher has taught a lot of about the Chinese traditions and it seemed largely connected to the core of my heart, this was the feeling I enjoyed the most in Mandarin First Language. There are copious opportunities to comprehend the language better by analysing texts and introducing significant authors to students. Getting to know my own racial culture empowers me to appreciate my roots better. My teacher (Ms Boey) has been a helpful and knowledgeable one, it was undoubtedly tough for her to deal with our craziness and curiosity, but we loved the fascinating atmosphere that has been created throughout the year. Honestly, Mandarin lessons would have been why more

tempting to attend if we are assigned less essay writing, but our teacher always says “it’s all for our own good” ! Lau Li Ying 10H Chinese as Second language Chinese is a very interesting language and so Mandarin lesson are also very meaningful. The students in the mandarin lesson are all very harmony. Every time the teacher started a new course, he will put some songs as a preface so that we can integrate into the new course more quickly. There are not much homework for us to do, but it will enable us to better understanding with the learning content. In Mandarin class, we learn new courses by playing some meaningful games which are included with the course. Also, we will play some games to learn new course content in every lesson. Teacher will often joke with us to let us have a relaxed and comfortable lesson. The fun in Mandarin lesson is the teacher and students sometimes will bring some China traditional food to class to let us know more about China. Wong Kai Sheng 9U Beginner My Mandarin lessons for this year were very educational. In mandarin lessons, it is fun to watch people mispronounce Chinese characters. I like that the teachers in Mandarin class try their hardest to teach their students because it shows they are dedicated. I hope that they can use English example and translate it to Mandarin. Shreya 9G Beginner Learning in a new language should always be a exciting experience. This is a language with culture and tradition. All mandarin lessons this year were fun and enjoyable. Every class is a great experience. Along with all of these, we learn many different lifestyle, culture and how are festivals celebrated in China in the older days and even today. We’ve also done many group activities and discussion which always make our class enjoyable. Every lesson not only teaches me the language but also the Chinese history and Chinese tradition. Every year was not the same but this year was something special. This unique year made my mandarin lessons fun, enjoyable and bright. This year will always be memorable and knowledgeable.

n Key Stage 3 Music, students study different musical genres through the three main activities of performing, composing and listening. In Year 7, students study a variety of projects which include World Music and Graphic Score Music Composition. Students are asked to study the different features of music from different culture and they apply the musical elements they have learned in their graphic score music composition. In Year 8, students continue to develop their skills in performing and composing. They learn to identify hooks and riff used in music through listening and apply them in their music composition. Students also studied the jazz genre (blues music) where they learn combining chords and melody in their performances as well as improvisation. In Year 9, students focus on creativity. The topics studied include music arrangement and film music. They learn to use the music software “Garage Band” which allows them more freedom to make music in a creative way. In each year group, there will be a term where students will be performing in an ensemble. They will be using resources from Musical Future which supports the development of instrumental skills on drums, guitar, bass and keyboard, using music that students like, enjoy and identify with. Students are

encouraged to bring in the instrument that they play to use as part of the practical projects whenever it is appropriate. I am really glad I chose to take Music as an IGCSE subject. With this beneficial course, I am able to explore the four different periods of music, identify the variety of styles and compositional techniques used in different pieces and when was this composed, who composed this piece and etc. Not only working on famous compositions, I get to be a young composer too! I learn to use music notation software such as Sibelius and Musescore. Writing my own music may seem as a challenge, but under my teacher’s guidance, many creative ideas bloom along the way. With the many composing techniques I have learned, I am able to apply

those in the coursework. Other than composing, there are many types of music too, for example world music such as African and Arab music. In this component I learn the different instruments used and the names of it. Also, there are opportunities to play or learn a new instrument. I would say IGCSE Music is where you can explore new things and also to develop your creativity. - Shevonne Seow Ee Jhin, Year 10O Being part of the Y10 Music lessons in TISPC had been extremely amazing . The experiential learning sets it apart from others as we get to enjoy music itself while learning. Throughout the year, I had the opportunity to explore

different instruments that I’m interested in and just have fun playing music with fellow peers who are also music lovers . We’ve learnt music arrangement and we could change the characteristics such as instrumental, tonality and more to our own style .Under the guidance of our teacher, we got to explore the four periods of music and world music such as African and Arab harmonies which portray a myriad of characteristics and style. Other than just playing pieces , we get to compose our own music too! It’s the time where we could unleash our creativity and insert the knowledge we’ve been taught into our own music . he year 10 music students went for a field trip on Tuesday, June 12th, 2018at International College of Music (ICOM).

They attended workshops on music writing, music production, practice techniques and audition tips by the lecturers from Berkeley College of Music. Students get to know more about music writing, music composition analysis and the way to practice effectively. At the end, they were given a tour in the music college and students were excited to be in the professional recording studio.

his year has been another fantastic year for the Humanities Department with lots of enthusiasm, hard work and dedication from both staff and students. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable year creating excellent learning opportunities, embracing new challenges and making memories with our students. Cultural Exchange at TISPC On Tuesday 21st August our Year 10 Humanities students hosted a cultural exchange programme with Niigata Technical High School, Japan for the second year running. Our Year 10â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had an enjoyable experience hosting this event and working collaboratively to deliver speeches in English and Japanese, performing Malaysian dances, demonstrating Batik painting and traditional games such as Batu Seremban and Chongkak. During our exchange programme we also had some Malaysian fruit and food sampling, such as Rambutans, Mangosteens, Nasi Lemak and Potong Ice Cream.

On the 2nd September 24 of our Humanities students headed for Niigata and Tokyo, Japan to participate in Niigataâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cultural Exchange programme. In Niigata we experienced a home-stay day visit, Origami, Karate, Judo and Kung Fu sessions. We visited a Japanese shrine and did some fruit picking in Niigata also. In Tokyo we went to Rinkai Earthquake Prevention Centre, Asakusa Temple, Odaiba & Shinjuku. A truly enjoyable experience had by all. Geography Field Work & Practical Experiments KS3 and KS4 Geography students have been involved in field work as part of their studies on Climate and Weather. This involved students undertaking the role of meteorologists, using weather stations, recording observations and measurements made to forecast weather patterns around the school site.

Year 9 Geographers also participated in practical experiments as part of their studies on Rock and Soil. Students created models of sedimentary rocks to help develop an understanding of how rocks form layers and represent the environments they are formed in. Year 8 students have enjoyed creating campaigns as part of their studies on Climate Change to raise awareness of human impacts & the consequences for our future planet. “We as a class had lots of fun with this hands on experience using real weather instruments to measure wind speed, temperature, wind direction and rainfall. We enjoyed finding a good spot on the field to place our weather vane and are very lucky to have a Geography class like this”. Global Perspectives

History

Y10 Global Perspectives students have been developing their collaboration and advocacy skills this year working towards completion of their team project which is 35% of their IGCSE. They hosted workshops and fairs throughout the month of October to raise awareness campaigning about their chosen global issues, such as Human Rights, Mental Health, LGBT Rights and Poverty & Inequality. These workshops involve students collaborating, gathering and sharing local, national and global perspectives on global issues. Y11 have been developing exam skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, identifying courses of action on issues such as Law & Criminality, Globalisation, Education and Demographic change in preparation for their IGCSE exam.

Year 7 students enjoyed learning about the Middle Ages & Heraldry (many people could not read or write in the Middle Ages, so they used heraldry as a way to identify themselves and their families. Year 7 created their own coat of arms using heraldry. They learnt that this also showed ranking in society during the Middle Ages. Year 8 Students presented “Why King Charles was executed” (English Civil War topic). Students carried out investigations about the execution and presented their findings. Year 9 have been learning about the Holocaust in Nazi Germany during the Second World War. They learnt about those who survived in Auschwitz (the concentration camp) and analysed their experiences during the Nazi regime. Year 9 have also learnt about WWI and the factors which contributed to the outbreak, they also explored why men joined up by examining War Propaganda and created their own recruitment posters based on examples they analysed in the classroom. Additionally, students created their own newspaper articles showing German perspectives of the Armistice that brought the Great War to an end.

HUMANITIES: ECONOMICS

n Economics, something to be highlighted this year is that the Y10 worked on analysing the determinants of demand on real life examples and researched about how the product will bring a shift into the demand, supply and market curves. This group work helped them to link into theory that they have studied. Besides that, they worked on groups to present on different banks’ characteristics and functions. Students are required to introduce different type of banks’ product and services as well as present fun facts about these banks. An interactive quiz activity took place after each group presentation to enhance students’ understanding. From this group work, students get to know more about different banks’ characteristics and the role of banks in an economy. An individual assignment was done by Year 10 students. This assignment provided an opportunity for students to link the economic concept they’ve learned to the latest news happening globally. Interesting topics, such as the US and China trade war, Malaysia abolition of GST as well as Brexit economy have been presented by the students. Analysing skill has been trained through this assignment and the students were giving opportunity to ask questions after each student presentation, which enhanced their evaluation skills. Year 11 focuses on the macroeconomics theories this year. Topics on Inflation, unemployment, GDP, taxes were highly related to what is happening around us. As a part of their lesson, the students worked on analysing the HDI, genuine progress indicator and GDP per capita of 10 countries and analysed on each countries status in terms of economic growth.

HUMANITIES: BUSINESS STUDIES

his year, the Year 10 students were involved in creating and presenting their business plan on their own business idea. Students need to consider business objectives, financial planning and also the marketing strategy in order to persuade the audience, who are the ‘investors’ to invest. Plenty of creative business ideas were presented by the students and the audience asked specific and business-oriented questions. This activity enhanced students’ understanding of entrepreneurship and the criteria of producing a quality and successful business plan. Business Studies students have also been involved in a mock interview session as part of their studies on Recruitment, Selection and Training of workers. Students were required to provide a formal resume and then they attended a interview in class. From the mock interview session, students learnt on how to create a clear and persuasive resume as well as tips for a successful interview, such as body language, eye contact and listening skills. Business students were asked basic interview questions by the business teachers and also challenging interview questions that require their decision making and organising skills. The Year 11 students however have come up with 3D models and slides presentations when they analysed on Marketing: location topic. In this task, students need to consider business objectives, location and also the marketing strategy in order to persuade the audience, who are the competitor. Plenty of creative business location ideas were presented by the students and the audience asked specific and location questions. This activity enhanced students’ understanding of entrepreneurship and the criteria of producing a quality and successful business location when they plan for their business location.

rama continues to do well at TISPC and this year we welcomed another teacher, Ms Norasila Laily, to the department. It has been great to have her expertise and enthusiasm and I look forward to working together going forward. Key Stage 3 students were once again able to experience Drama from its ritualistic origins to more modern-day examples of theatre and performance by exploring Stand Up Comedy and competitive Dance. Ms Norasila has taken Year 7 and Year 8 planning under her wing and I am pleased that the students have responded well to her adaptation of the syllabus. The number of students taking Drama for Year 10 has also remained stable and we look forward to working with them in the future. Key Stage 4 classes have enjoyed more specific instruction on Play texts, performance and devising and as we await the IGCSE results of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Year 11 Drama students, I am confident that this will be a good learning curve and benchmark for the future Drama students. Year 10 students will have also been able to see the works of their seniors and this will develop their confidence and channel their abilities on the stage when the time comes for them to be assessed. 2019 holds many new challenges and experiences. Workshops with KLPAC and an Artist in Residence Programme are being developed and both Key Stage 3 and 4 will be able to take part in these. We also depart on a Creative Study Tour to the UK with a number of secondary students who will be able to experience theatre and performance first hand and with industry professionals. All-in-all, Drama continues to be a popular subject which all students enjoy. We look forward to report on the successes of the students in the New Year. 104

Shakespeare @ The Park Fort Canning Park, Singapore.

Julius Caesar, one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays deals with many real world problems of today, politics, leadership and most importantly, the place between right and wrong; there are always two sides of the story. We, the lucky few, got a chance to see it all unfold at Fort Canning Park. Those who did not come, well, as Cassius says, “the fault lies not in our stars but in ourselves” that you missed this amazing opportunity. Even though we arrived in Singapore a little late (blame customs), we were still in time for the show. Hungry we made a beeline for the food stalls and then set our mats down to prepare for the much anticipated night. The adapted play was set in the modern world, and R.O.M.E was an intergovernmental alliance between 7 countries. It was extremely fitting, as it shined a light on the similarities between the real world and the world of Julius Caesar. The stage platform was a work of art in itself. It transformed to suit the setting of the scene automatically, becoming a meeting table, stairs, a platform, emitting light or smoke to suit the scene, and most wonderfully a fountain of gurgling water! The actors were truly talented, emoting from their hearts and were sublime orators. Brutus, Caesar, Cassius and all the other characters were brought to life on that night. The storyline was deep and powerful, and we all were anxious to see the end. Being the first time most of us have seen a real play, it did not disappoint. “Veni, vidi, vici”, we left with our minds satisfied and our knowledge expanded. The next day, we rose with high spirits and made our way to Singapore Zoo for breakfast with the orangutans and

peacocks. They were all adorable, and we all jumped at the chance to take a photo with them. After breakfast, we had some time to walk around the zoo, looking at the exhibitions. From snakes to giraffes to tigers, whatever you wanted to see, they had it. We sadly could not finish looking at everything, but we were still very happy that we had the chance to look around. Lastly, after settling down on the bus, we passed customs and were on our way back to home sweet home.

The Works of

William Shakespeare

Book Week 2018 Written by: Tan Jing 9P. Teachers-in-charge: Secondary English Department.

n honour of this year’s book week theme, The Works of William Shakespeare, our school was very lucky to have gotten the KL Shakespeare company to host a small Shakespeare play session in our atrium and auditorium, transforming our atrium into the Globe Theatre for the day. Students lined up along the railings of the floors, mimicking the different levels of the real Globe Theatre. For teachers and students alike, the chance to witness a Shakespeare play performed by professionals was not to be missed. For literature enthusiasts like myself, more so. The company performed a small excerpt of the opening sequence of Macbeth, where the three prophetic witches, Macbeth and Banquo prominently feature. It was absolutely wonderful! The background music, the marvellous acting and the voice work! All of it brought us into the dark world of “The Scottish Play”. Maybe we’ll all be cursed now……. but it was worth the excitement! For Year 9 students, it was a peek into what we would be studying for the rest of the school year, and what an amazing peek it was! It left us all quoting the infamous lines “fair is foul and foul is fair, hover through the fog and filthy air”. The performance concluded with thunderous applause from the audience, and anticipation

throughout for the next part of the session. We all trooped into the auditorium to watch a part from one of the classic romantic tragedies by the infamous bard himself, Romeo and Juliet. The scene takes place when Juliet is in her room, lamenting the long time it took for her nurse to bring back a message from her love, Romeo, and concludes with her parents forcing her into marriage with Count Paris. The extravagant emotions shown by the actors and their actions made the audience laugh uncontrollably at times, and hold their breaths in anxiety in others. The actors’ interaction with the audience made us feel like we were all a part of the scene, and we were experiencing the impatience and distraught of Juliet, the worry and weariness of the nurse, and the anger and rage of Lord and Lady Capulet. The ending of the scene came too early, and left us all yearning for more. At the end of the session we went back to our classes, with everyone talking non-stop about the plays and their thoughts, delving back with renewed excitement into our books to learn more about the stories of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet.

i, you might be wondering who am I. Well I’m Lye Xiu Xian from class 11P. I want to share my experience sitting for BM IGCSE papers. I’ve recently took my BM IGCSE and gotten an A grade for it. I would like to let you know how I got it and what I did in order to get A grade in those papers. I’ve been studying in Taylor’s Puchong when I was 13 years old and I would like to say that studying in Taylor’s Puchong has been a wonderful journey for me. When I was in year 8 I’m one of the worst students. I’m constantly getting low grades as in GE for BM and same goes to some of my others subject. Time passed by really quickly. In a blink of an eye, I’m in year 10 and things are getting much more serious. The more you grow up the tougher it become because you have to set a good example for the juniors. Until one day I have to sit with my teacher and had a long talked with her. She told me that I got to start being serious with my studies because things are getting much more serious in year 10. I just have to put in at least 80% effort in

my study in order to succeed. She put in so much effort and trusting me that I could get good grades in BM. She gave me extra classes for BM after school out of her free time. I didn’t want to disappoint her so I told her that I would give her A for my BM in IGCSE. In order to achieve good grades in BM I have to work hard and try to communicate with other people in BM in order to improve my BM. I did a lot of practices doing pass years papers and talked Malay to my teachers in BM. It’s really help me understands BM better. What I would like to say here is never ever give up no matter how bad you’re doing in your subject. You just have to try your best. It’s okay to make mistakes. At the end of the day even if you got a grade that wasn’t what you wanted at least you tried your best. If you just give up you might even get worse grade or you might not know your strength. So try your best by going out of your comfort zone and never give up.

his year has been a wonderful but busy year for the Design Technology Department at TISPC.

We started the year with foundation studies for KS3 comprising of Graphic products, Resistant Materials and Product Design. Being a part of this foundation studies, students work focused more on practical task. Year 7 worked on Pop-Up Book based on their own stories, where else Year 8 worked on creating candle holder made from wood and finally Year 9 planned and built a product based on the given option (table lamp, perfume display unit, or hand phone). Currently KS3 learners are working on Product Packaging, Wind Chime and Passive Amplifier to be consolidated into their end of year project. On the other hand Year 10 students have been working on their syllabus and strengthening their skills on drawing and sketching. Our Year 10’s also have started their coursework journey for their IGCSE in 2019. Year 11’s currently are working on their final product for their coursework, which is a Table Lamp. We would like to wish All The Best to our 2018 Year 11 cohorts on their examination. It’s always been a pleasure to work along with our students. We from the DT department would like to express our gratitude to all the staffs and students in TISPC for supporting our DT lessons and encouraging students towards achieving their best.

his has been an exciting and busy time for Art at TISPC. Our Art curriculum promotes logical, creative and imaginative thinking and encourages students to tackle problem solving. It has been rewarding to watch students gain skills and confidence in our innovative environments as they progress through each year group. Key Stage 3 Art had a successful year, with the introduction of new culturally inspired schemes of work that included projects like Fusion Wayang Kulit (shadow puppets) and Year 7’s Batik inspired paper works. The traditional genre of portraiture was also explored by Year 8 who produced quirky Frutti self-portraits and Year 9 who created fabulous selfportraits on canvas, inspired by the Pointillism movement.

Year 11 IGCSE students explored their own personal responses to Coursework topics in a diverse range of media and outcomes. From interesting start points, students developed their own style of painting and moved further and further away in an individual direction. The level of creativity shown throughout their IGCSE programme is outstanding. We wish them well on their new courses next year and hope they will stay in touch. I would like to thank all members of the Art Department for their dedication and expertise and commend the wonderful work by the students who make teaching Art so rewarding.

This year we saw some outstanding outcomes from Key Stage 4. The Year 10 cohort produced amazing reductive Lino cuts in their Printmaking project. Their innovative prints were displayed in the Atrium and offered to the School Community to participate in a Silent Auction for Charity. They also produced beautiful collage and ink media works in response to the theme ‘Architecture as a Reflection of Culture,’ which will be added to the previous year’s display in the library.

n Physical Education this year students have been challenged to develop their physical movement across a range of sports including: Athletics, Swimming, Football, Basketball, Badminton Volleyball, Touch Rugby and Rounders. This year we have introduced a fitness unit of work to the secondary PE curriculum to compliment the new Gymnasium we have build on campus. In this unit students have began understanding simple Biomechanics of movement and started exploring the equipment to build personalized training programs for themselves and their peers.

ICT Students share their experiences...

i, my name is Marcus Mah from Year 11U and I have participated in a competition called ICDL (a.k.a International Computer Driving License) representing Malaysia . This competition has allowed me to become a more confident person. This is my first time participating a competition in my entire life. As it was my first time, I didn’t know what to expect but I insist in getting out of my comfort zone. The anticipation before and during the competition was intimidating but I pulled through. The first day was crammed, time seemed non-existent. The competition was commencing and photographer snapping away. But all I conclude is this is just an exposure for me to view the different lifestyle. Getting medal would be a great achievement but taking the opportunity to join a competition is well worth it. Year 8: Stop Motion Clay Animation Group Project Who remembers making flip books when we were younger? We created them by drawing a small image at the bottom corner of a book page and drawing it again, a bit changed on the next page, and so on, and then “flipping” the pages to see the items move. But now….technology have move students to create their own stop motion animation with their own clay models. Davinia Raphaela Thai Rao (8P): it was challenging but a fun experience. I got to work with my friend and use my creativity for the project. I also got to work with clay, which I have never done before. So as I said, it was challenging. And after taking

all of the photos of the characters and seeing them come to life in a way, I was glad I got to experience this activity. Ethan Oey Jen-zen (8P):For me doing stop motion animation with my friends was a bit hard and a bit fun. I brainstorm about the title and research about it and I ask me friends to help me make that item in the act. In conclusion I really recommend to all the people to try this at home. It’s fun! Year 11 MYSekolah Competition Mysekolah was a competition that us four, Adrein, Eugene Teo , Chee En Yang, Ahmad Razeeq and Ethan Hon, have participated. It is a competition where we are tested for our storytelling and video shooting capabilities. We have learnt a lot after attending a seminar which was held by the hosting committee at BAC college. We have also made new friends and get to explore other genres of videos produced by students from other school. The competition was for us to showcase our school and values that the school carries. The competition was held from 25th of July to the 31st of August where we have produced a video called “Untold Chapters”. During the production of the video, we have used and learnt different skills and incorporate it into our video. On September 1st we have attended a screening of the finalists of the competition. We had presented our videos and observed all other contestants that got to the finals. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to win the top 3 spots but this experience definitely have nurtured us in many ways possible and we would join the competition again if we could.

DIRECTOR OF SPORT

his year has seen our sports teams hitting heights which have previously never been seen before in TIS Puchong. It was our first full year of Kuala Lumpur International School Sports (KLISS) and we continued our high level performances in KL Sports League and MSSD tournaments. During our KLISS year we have earned compliments from a host of other established international schools with our organisation, team spirit and professionalism during home and away tournaments. It is in the KL Sports League where we have flourished though, winning 5 championships and earning numerous runners up and 3rd place finishes which shows how much as a department and a group of athletes we are improving. The main aim this year was to push for more students to experience the pride and honour of representing the school against other International Schools, therefore we have created more B teams. In fact, there is only two schools in KLISS who have created more which just shows how

much our level of commitment has driven us on to be more inclusive in our competitions. We are now creating a sporting culture in the school which I can only see as continuing to increase year on year with the staff and students we have. Training sessions now take place at lunchtimes as well as after-school trainings which has given us an extra dimension and the feeling around the school is of pride and passion when the students talk about the sports teams. Leading on from last years huge success of the Sports Awards Ceremony, we will be hosting this again this year with great anticipation. I would like to thank all my staff for their dedication, the staffing body as a whole for helping us achieve our goals, the parents who have trusted us with their students sporting progress and safety, but most importantly our amazingly talented students as none of this would be possible without their commitment, drive and personality.

he Athletics Team of Taylor’s International School Puchong was created by Ms. Noorhaliza Binti Rasli in 2017 and has started participating in Athletics events ever since. This year, the Athletics Team of has represented the school to compete in several tournaments in the first term of the year. One of the highlights of the year is that the Athletics Team were able to proudly represent the school by bring 60 members to take part and compete against 8 other international schools in the Kuala Lumpur International School Sports (KLISS) 2018 Athletics Tournament for the first time ever in the school’s history. KLISS was held on the 9th of March at the Shah Alam

National Sports Panasonic Complex. For the past few months, the team had put in their full effort into the training and preparation for this tournament as they have been anticipating it for quite some time. All the athletes were very excited for this tournament and were eager to do their best. The behaviour of all the team members was exemplary as they showed great sportsmanship and professionalism on the day. The determination and passion that the athletes had for their events were also displayed on the day of the tournament while they did the events that they participated in. As a result, many of the athletes achieved very well in their events and proudly represented their school as they received their medals. It was an absolutely fantastic day at the tournament as the results achieved were excellent. The Athletics Team will represent Taylor’s International School Puchong to join the KLISS tournament again next year in hope to achieve even better.

n March 2018, Taylor’s Puchong went for the first ever Primary Athletics competition in IGB International School. It was a really competitive day for all of us. We fought against 8 or 9 schools’,we tried our hardest to beat those schools to get a medal/medals for the proud of our school. Our favourite teachers Ms Haliza and Mr Mark taught us lots of skills and techniques to run faster and throw further. Ms Haliza and Mr Mark gave us a lot of inspiration and motivation. They both gave us excellent training even though we had a short time of training .They both are really amazing and wonderful. Thank You Ms Haliza and Mr Mark.
