ith the traditional groundbreaking ceremony, the WEINIG Group launched one of the largest construction projects in the recent WEINIG history at the Nürtingen loca-tion. The newly designed headquarters of subsidiary Holz-Her will be built by au-tumn 2019 for an investment sum of 10 million euros. The strong growth of the Pan-el Processing business unit in recent years was the decisive factor for this decision. In addition, the number of employees doubled in the last eight years. The existing structural solution no longer met the increasing requirements. This is about to change: A spacious, modern building complex is now being built in the “Großer Forst” industrial estate on a total area of 5,800 sqm. It provides sufficient capacity to concentrate sales, technology, development, service and administration “under one roof”. The heart of the new building is a 1,400 sqm showroom. A tech-nology center with training rooms and the administration wing will also be located there. During the planning phase, the focus was on the shortest possible routes. In accordance with the basic architectural idea, the new building, measuring 70 x 50 metres, has a continuous floor slab on which the office area and a special hall con-struction are arranged directly next to each other. Its outstanding stylistic element is a wooden frame that spans the 30-metre wide hall without supports. Visually, the architecture is characterized by a particular lightness. The high strength of the se-lected composite material plays a significant role in achieving this effect. The so-called “BauBuche” (laminated beech veneer lumber) allows much slimmer compo-nents than softwood composites. An integral part

At the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony, the WEINIG Board of Directors, Holz-Her managers and the building planners took the spade

of the concept is the option of sub-sequent structural modifications without great effort. Future building measures of the WEINIG Group will be carried out according to the same CI specifications. 85 em-ployees will move into the new building. The building project is actually designed for as many as 125 employees. Holz-Her thus retains sufficient flexibility to be able to respond to increasing space requirements. The surrounding area also offers space for expansion: In a further expansion stage, an additional area of 1,500 to 2,500 sqm can be developed and built upon in the open field. The groundbreaking ceremony was characterized by a strong sense of departure. An extension to the Holz-Her production plant in Voitsberg, Austria, was started only last September. With its investment at the headquarters of Holz-Her, the WEINIG Group has now started the second forward-looking project in the latest success sto-ry of the panel processing specialist. “Holz-Her has made a great development since joining the WEINIG

PANEL & JOINERY PRODUCTION – SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Group in 2010,” WEINIG CEO Wolfgang Pöschl empha-sized in Nürtingen. This is also reflected in the large investment, he said. Frank Ep-ple, Managing Director of Holz-Her GmbH, particularly pointed out the potential that the new building opens up: “The functional integration of sales, customer presenta-tions and administration into one building will ensure maximum customer proximity and the highest level of support in the future,” he said. With the technology and de-velopment center, the appropriate infrastructure for an innovative company such as Holz-Her is now finally in place, he added. Since its integration into the WEINIG Group in 2010, Holz-Her has tripled its sales to approximately EUR 120 million in 2017. However, this is only intended to be an intermediate stage: “Today was the starting signal for further growth”, Frank Epple was confident. For further information: www.weinig.com

uilding on the success of previous events, AXYZ International will be holding another Open House event on 10 October at the company’s main assembly and supply facility. This is situated on the T54 Business Park in Telford, adjacent to the M54 motorway and with links to other major road networks. The event will be open to both existing and potential new customers in the industrial woodworking, furniture and joinery production, panel processing, sign manufacturing and plastics and metal fabrication industries. Senior AXYZ International management and technical personnel will be on hand to offer advice and explain the company’s product training courses, ongoing technical and maintenance support and the comprehensive online 24/7 spare parts and accessories facility available. Key products to be demonstrated will include routers from the company’s power brand AXYZ and Pacer series of machines, including the latest AXYZ Trident hybrid combined routing and knife-cutting system. This has enabled owners of the machine to maximise the huge new business potential that exists in industries not currently served by their core manufacturing activities, including primarily the digital printing, labelling and packaging sectors. For the first time, a new waterjet cutting machine will be shown. It marks AXYZ International’s entry into the highly specialised waterjet cutting technology sector, enabling the company to provide a viable alternative to traditional CNC routing and knife-cutting systems for the processing of materials these cannot handle.

T

he Blum Group upped its turnover by 2.8 % in the 2017/2018 financial year thanks to products and services that are consistently geared to furniture manufacturers’ needs, international market presence and great flexibility on the part of employees.

Manufacturer of fittings, Blum, increased its turnover by 2.8 % in comparison to the previous year and recorded 1,839.42 million euros in turnover in the business year ended 30 June 2018. Blum achieved 48 % of its turnover in the EU area and 15 % in the USA. The fittings specialist delivers its products to more than 120 countries all over the world and is represented internationally by 30 subsidiaries and representative offices. It has been decided that the third generation will take the helm of Julius Blum GmbH on 1 July 2019. Employees are the basis of our success “Our success is mainly due to the high performance of our team worldwide and the excellent collaboration between all our departments and organisations, says Managing Director Gerhard E. Blum, underlining the importance of employees to Blum. On average, the fittings manufacturer employed 7,509 persons worldwide, which is a growth of 368 employees in comparison to the previous year. In addition, 94 new apprentices (14 of whom are girls) will start a technical course of training with Blum Austria on 1 September. The Blum Group will provide vocational training to 361 apprentices (19 of whom in the USA) as of autumn. Different market developments Most markets in Western Europe achieved an increase in turnover in the 2017/2018 financial year. The company benefited from continued recovery in South European

markets and recorded ongoing positive developments in Eastern Europe. The upswing of the Russian market was very pleasing. The strength of the euro had a negative impact on sales in America, the Pacific region and in Asia over the last 12 months. This led to a decrease in turnover in North and South America, although the development was positive in the national currency. In Asia, above all in India, China and South East Asia, growth continued despite negative currency effects. Regional and international investments The first production hall of the new Stamping Centre (Plant 8) in Dornbirn was completed and employees started moving into the new premises before the start of the holiday shutdown. The high bay warehouse with 11,600 places will go into operation at the same time. The second production hall should be completed by April 2019. Employees will move into the new office building at Plant 2 in Hoechst from September to December 2018. A substantial amount is also invested in Blum’s market organisations to further improve the

company’s offering worldwide. For example, a new high bay warehouse was put into operation in Poland, and a new showroom opened in Slovakia. The extension to the office building and warehouse in Portugal should be completed by September 2018. Investments of the Blum Group totalled 216 million euros in the 2017/2018 business year. Environmental protection and careful use of resources Blum attaches importance to environmental protection and careful use of resources. That is why the company has been investing in environmentally-friendly measures for decades. Since the start of 2018, 100 per cent of Blum’s energy has been generated from certified hydropower. With this measure the manufacturer of fittings intends to reduce its CO2 emissions in Austria by well over a third. Blum has teamed up with other companies in the province and is an active member of three environmental protection networks: Climate Neutral Alliance 2025, the Energy Efficiency Network and the “Wirtschaft Mobil network.

13 electric cars are at employees’ disposal for business journeys in the region. Being one of the largest employers in the region, Blum supports its employees in using environmentally-friendly modes of transport. The company advertises and actively promotes ecological campaigns such as the “Radius - Bike to Work Competition” held throughout Vorarlberg. Bespoke package of products and services For Blum, the Eurocucina in Milan is a very important international trade show. It provides a yardstick to assess how well furniture manufacturers accept the company’s products. This year in Milan, customers displayed many new Blum products which the company had presented at trendsetting interzum in Cologne the previous year. These included Expando T, the unique fixing method for thin fronts of special materials which opens up completely new design horizons and the new Aventos HK top lift system. Customers also presented the multitude of differentiation options offered by Blum’s box systems. There is still a very strong trend towards handle-less designs which can be implemented with Blum’s wide range of motion technologies (both mechanical and electrical systems). All motion technologies are tailored optimally to every application. Blum again extended its offering of services in the last business year. In addition to products, services are an important part of Blum’s overall performance. Change to corporate organisation The transition to the next generation in Julius Blum GmbH will be initiated at the start of this financial year. Managing Directors Gerhard E. Blum, Philipp Blum and Martin

Blum will jointly manage the company from 1 July 2018. They will be supported by longstanding employees Urs Bolter (Managing Director of Blum International Consulting) and Gerhard Humpeler (Head of Finance). The Management Team and the Corporate Management Group will gradually take over the responsibilities of Gerhard E. Blum as of the start of the 2018/2019 financial year. After the transition on 1 July 2019, Gerhard E. and his brother Herbert Blum will continue to jointly manage the holding company of the Blum Group. Forecast for the 2018/2019 business year “We will approach the new business year with restrained optimism. There are many question marks and there is a great deal of uncertainty about future developments. On the one hand, the Brexit process in Europe has still not been clarified and it is uncertain what direction the EU should take. On the

6;CF'?>EC@2DD9F/)/F3?4B=,F 5D=<EBDA>F*D@F8== History Masterwood Spa is one of the leading suppliers dedicated to CNC solutions, supplying machines all around the World and is still run by the three Italian families of Muti, Zangheri, and Boschetti that started their companies over 50 years ago. In March 2018 a new partnership was announced with Guangzhou KDT Machinery Co. Ltd, the leading Chinese woodworking machine manufacture. The partnership will ensure that all the Masterwood CNC machines continue to be designed and built in Italy, a large unit has already been added to the Rimini factory to allow a higher level of production to meet today’s demands. The partnership will also allow Masterwood to sell their machine range into the Chinese market. A full range of machines that include the Muti oscillating chisel mortises, drilling machines, and routers, which are ALL built in the Rimini and San Marino factories in Italy using proven designs and leading suppliers for components like HSD, Beckhoff, Yaskawa, THK, Schmalz, and Becker. Over the last ten years the company has

10

redesigned much of the range to meet customers’ needs following the worldwide recession; as a result a more efficient company can now supply more individual solutions but keep production times to a minimum, with various “kit” options like horizontal routers and C-axis controls easy to retro fit at sensible prices. Pod & Rail CNC’s Starting with an entry level Project 250, moving through the larger 300 and 400 Project series to the top end Project 500 range these CNC machines can be supplied in all formats for solid timbers, panels, composites, and other materials. This includes long or short beds, cantilever or gantry designs, manual or automatic beds, in 3, 4 or 5 axis formats.

PANEL & JOINERY PRODUCTION – SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Flat Bed CNC’s To compliment the pod and rail range Masterwood have increased the range of Matrix beds for “nesting” and special works. These range from the entry 2500mm x 1250mm bed through a large range of sheet sizes up to beds of 7500mm in length. All the flat beds are to a heavy bed design by Masterwood with the gantries driven on both sides of the machine bed for added accuracy and long lasting reliability. The flat bed range can have infeed and outfeed systems to automate the production, allowing full sheets to be loaded, fully machined, finished panels pushed out, and the bed cleaned before the next sheet is loaded. On top of this a manual or fully

Preview

automatic arm can be added for sticking labels on to the sheets prior or after machining. Special CNC’s To add to the main CNC range Masterwood then produce dedicated machines like the 4WIN (Windows), Project Door (Full size doors), DoorLine (Door locks and hinges), Teknomat and MultiMill (window and frame components). These machines can be manually fed, or in most cases supplied with a mixture of automatic loading and unloading equipment, including Robots, the employees of the future? Production Lines In recent years Masterwood have been asked to provide more and more automated production lines to leading manufacturers around the World. This has covered such products as windows, doors, frames, and sun glasses. The special systems have included such items as inserting weather seals into components, selecting and fixing locks into housings, special beds for machining gun parts, and special drill heads for multi drilling acoustic panels. Dedicated Software All the developments and improvements to the CNC machines is one thing, but the biggest changes have been with software. As our PC’s have become more powerful than the software has too, allowing customers to produce programmes that would consist of thousands of lines of code in minutes, allowing carvings and intricate work to be produced on the very basic 3 axis machines, often dismissing the need to go to more expensive 5 axis machines and software.

Masterwood have always produced software with their own companies, but to take this to higher levels they now work under contract with some of the leading software houses, this ensures that machines and software are fully compatible at all times. All the machines are supplied with the tried and tested MasterWorks Cad/Cam, an easy to use, but powerful package for most CNC work. To add to this there are dedicated packages to cover Staircases, Windows, Door Sets (timber frame & solid core), Traditional box windows, Cabinets, Furniture, Louvres, and the latest 3D software for 3, 4 and 5 axis work. Any of the packages can be added to a customer’s machine at any time, giving them the ability to change direction or production methods if required. All the Masterwood software packages come with full on-site installation and training to tailor to the customer’s manufacturing needs. Support Selling and supplying machines is one thing, supporting and helping customers is the next stage, in our eyes it is the most important. For first time buyers CNC is likely to be the biggest investment their company makes, so it is important that they see the

results on their production as soon as possible and feel comfortable with the direction they have taken. Masterwood GB uses up to twelve technicians in the UK and Ireland to cover the installation and training for new CNC machines and software, support & back up, servicing, repairs, and breakdowns, plus upgrading old machines to be more compatible with the new machines when installed. We also have the expertise of our Italian company staff to help with the more “specialised” jobs when required. We have over 300 companies in the UK and Ireland using our machines, many of these are family run, and within time we find they totally rely on their CNC, so if there are problems, for whatever reason, it is important that they are back running in the shortest time possible. Our growing team have vast knowledge and experience of the Masterwood machines, not just today’s models, but those produced in the last 30 years, many still operating every day including CNC machines and the Muti oscillating chisel mortisers. For Masterwood GB our customers are important, they become our “showrooms”, in many cases new sales have resulted from visits to see existing customers machines in operation, and the good reports that are passed on, so it is in our interest to provide the best service for our growing family of customers, and we never lose sight that there is always room for improvements. abinet hardware expert TITUS is showcasing its comprehensive range of connectors and cabinet construction components at the W18 Exhibition and Elements 2018, which run from 30 September to 3 October at the National Exhibition Centre. Titus cabinet connectors are engineered to improve furniture quality and simplify manufacturing processes. The new and innovative Quickfit TL5 “Full Metal Jacket” dowels provide strong, reliable joints in all types of wooden materials, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that it is no longer necessary to use different dowels for different materials, or to reinforce joints by adding supplementary wooden dowels. In addition, the new dowels offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to 50% for home-assembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume production applications, they can be inserted automatically using TITUS FastFit machines. Another important innovation from Titus that will be featured on the stand is the

Tekform family of double wall drawers. These are simple to mount and have an integrated soft-closing mechanism that provides reliable life-long performance. Tekform Slimline drawers, the second generation of the company’s double-wall drawers, combine elegant appearance with thin side panels that make best possible use of the drawer space. A further benefit is that Tekform Slimline drawers have the same bottom and back panel dimensions as the original Tekform drawers (DWD series), allowing easy interchangeability and flexibility in use. Slimline drawers are available in white and anthracite grey, with lengths from 270 to 550 mm. They are offered in the same heights as DWD drawers (H70, H145 and H182). A new height (H100) has also been added to the range. Various internal front panel options (low or high glass, aluminium panel or bar) are available, and there is also a glass side option. The front panel brackets can be attached with standard screws, or by the unique TITUS “Easy-Fix” method. Experts from TITUS will be available on the stand throughout the show to provide information about the company’s latest

pecially trained chemotherapy nurses and specialists administer outpatient chemotherapy regimens, supported by consultants and specially trained doctors. The unit was an expansion of existing services provided by the hospital to create a new 22 bed facility. The inspiration for the artwork on the interior walls of the Unit was the flora and fauna of the surrounding the area of Weybourne, with research carried out so the right plants and leaf patterns could be used by the artist Vicki Johnson, Creative Director and Co-founder of Print to the People – a Norwich based organisation. Her art has a varied imagery, combining both digital and traditional printmaking techniques. Emma Jarvis, Environmental Arts Manager responsible for the project said “Our decision to use a film to cover the walls and as a base for the artwork was determined by a number of factors including; infection control, cleaning and

fire safety Emma continued “We trialed a range of different films printing Vicki’s designs directly onto the film and then tested it with actichlor which is a hospital bleach used throughout our hospital.

We selected LG Hausys Interior Film from David Clouting because it not only passed the bleach test but the quality of the white colour of the film was also significantly better than the others we tested. It has a slightly softer tone and worked best with the building finishes within the unit. Installation was also a key factor together with the type of glue on the film itself. We needed to ensure that the film would not fall off the wall in any way and also peel off and replace with ease when required. The air channels and the slightly thicker make of Interior Film helped significantly in ensuring first time placement and installation with no repositioning required. Available in a range of over 400 designs and finishes, Interior Film is CE and IMO Certified so can be specified with confidence across a wide range of applications. After all, the Kronodesign team combined unrivalled insight and experience with extensive research to develop a globally unified range of decorative panels aimed at setting trends in the furniture and interior design sectors. A range that in a few short months has already inspired designers, architects and interior specialists with its originality, innovation and creativity.

R

anging from authentic woodgrain designs to stone and concrete effects with a variety of finishes from gloss and matt unicolors and stunning metallics, the 2018 Global Collection comprises over 220 decors, featuring 73 brand new for this year. Success is the new trend A Harmony of Contrasts has been a theme for 2018, combining beautifully contrasting

designs, colour shades, surfaces and textures across decorative boards and worktops. The concept of uniting intense, pastel and monochrome colours; dark and light woodgrains; stone, marble, concrete and metals across a range of textures and finishes has had a very positively response. The innovative Avant-garde combinations of acrylic gloss, mirror gloss and acrylic matt boards with the contrasting sheen of real brushed metallic boards has also

made an impact, notably in the high-end residential and commercial areas. And the new range of Melamine Faced Boards, including authentic textured woodgrain reproductions, or unicolors in muted or vivid shades, are finding favour in furniture and interior design projects. There has been some tremendous feedback on the 2018 Kronodesign Global Collection, not least for the way architects and designers can mix and match, complement and contrast with such creative freedom across the whole range, whatever the project, thanks to the integrated approach and inspirational design. art of the dp-specialist range, Decorative Panels Lamination are now stocking Serica matt PVC’s. The captivating and silky finish gives the surface a real wow effect both to the touch and to the eye. Incorporating anti- scratch and antifingerprint technology, SERICA is designed to cover all types of furnishings in homes, offices and stores and is an excellent choice for exhibition contractors and specialised projects. One of the main advantages Serica has over other matt products on the market is its ability to be repaired. Serica surfaces

have anti-scratch properties but in case micro-scratches do occur, the surface can be easily repaired with thermal heating. A simple iron can be used to renovate the surface and give it a new life. The surface is robust enough not to require a protective film making it easy to process within a factory. Decorative Panels can offer Serica in 30 colours and on short lead times. Available laminated on MDF and dp-lite Hollowcore board. The Serica surface is extremely flexible and can also be used for membrane pressing and profile wrapping.

AccoyaÂŽ Sourced from fast growing sustainable forests, AccoyaÂŽ wood, which spans eight decades of research, is a certified softwood which uses Accsys’ proprietary wood acetylation technology to deliver exceptionally high levels of performance, stability and durability. Boasting a 50-year guarantee for exterior use and 25-years when used in the ground, AccoyaÂŽ wood offers all kinds of new possibilities and solutions for outdoor projects which may involve challenging and demanding applications. It can be used for virtually any joinery project and is a perfect solution for exterior cladding, siding and façades where aesthetics, less frequent maintenance, dimensional stability, durability and insulation value are key factors. Plus, for window frames, AccoyaÂŽ wood is the material of choice. Not only does it have extremely low thermal conductivity

MediteÂŽTricoyaÂŽ Extreme offers a guarantee of 50-years when used above ground

but it matches or exceeds the durability and dimensionally stability of the best tropical hardwoods. It can be opaque coated or, for those wishing to enjoy the natural look of wood, translucent coated. AccoyaŽ wood’s low maintenance requirements add to its cost effectiveness and environmental credentials. MediteŽTricoyaŽ Extreme This panel exhibits outstanding durability and dimensional stability, allowing it to be used in applications once limited to products such as concrete, plastics or metals. With the added benefits of light weight, sustainable raw materials and a guarantee of up to 50 years above ground

and 25 years in ground, MediteŽTricoyaŽ Extreme provides architects, specifiers and designers with an entirely new construction material, allowing greater design flexibility and endless opportunities for creativity. The combination of acetylated wood fibre with the manufacturing technology of Medite MDF means it can be used in situations and applications where normal MDF panels cannot. However, it maintains all the design, fixing and machining flexibility of medium density fibreboards. Using sustainably sourced FSCŽ timber, MediteŽTricoyaŽ Extreme is made using a high-performance resin which has zero added formaldehyde in its formulation, ensuring the product is also suitable for environmentally sensitive areas. James Latham’s Technical Timber Sales Development Manager, Justin Hayward explained, “These products offer ground breaking levels of performance in both stability and durability as well as outstanding environmental standards and they are fast becoming recognised by architects, joiners, specifiers and the construction industry as the materials of choice for exterior applications. “ For further information: Tel: 0116 257 3415 www.lathamtimber.co.uk marketing@lathams.co.uk

n display and ready for demonstration will be examples of the wide belt and edge sanding machinery manufactured by Kündig AG of Switzerland. Kündig are widely recognised as a premium class product and cater for those demanding the highest quality surface finish. All machines are heavily constructed and engineered to ensure vibration free running and that absolutely no movement takes place during the sanding process. Sanding machines from Kündig can be found in a large number of the UK’s finest furniture makers, whose clients expectations and demands are that quality is everything, from the accuracy of construction to the perfect unblemished finish of exotic veneers and marquetry to the pure reflective surface of high gloss finishes. Users of Kündig have often commented on

how such an intricate and ordinarily time consuming process to achieve such a finish is made so easy. Kündig have worked hard not only to produce a machine to give such a quality finish but to make it as user friendly as possible whether the machine is to be used for calibration of different materials, sanding of the thin veneer on boards whilst protecting the more vulnerable corners and edges or even removing just microns from the surface when lacquer sanding. W18 will see the most popular selling wide belt sanders on display which as always will be ready for demonstration including the Premium-2 1100 RP ideally suited for joinery and solid wood applications and the Brilliant-2 1350 Red-L which is a genuine ‘all rounder’ for solid wood, veneers and for lacquer sanding. The Brilliant machine also uses Oblique sanding technology to generate a flatter, fibre free surface whilst also eliminating the possibility of oscillation marks and belt defects being transmitted to the working surface from the abrasive. On display at W18 will also be examples of the Kündig Uniq edge sanding machines which due to their versatility are also popular amongst the UK’s furniture makers. These double sided machines allow the accurate sanding of both solid wood and veneered edges, have a large capacity 200mm wide abrasive with programmable oscillation to allow full use of the belt and with motorised tilting of the abrasive makes easy work when sanding bevelled edges. The Uniq-S is complete with an integrated feed system with easily adjusted speed control. The Uniq machines can be fitted with a host of options including a mobile kit and additional tables to allow the use of bobbin attachments or to sand curves off the main drive roller.

eil Haynes a cabinet maker and musician started Haynes Guitars three years ago, with a love for woodworking and a passion for music combining the two and manufacturing his own guitar bodies and necks for other guitar makers from the UK and Europe seemed the logical progression. At W14 Neil decided to take a massive leap and take his business to the next level and purchase a CNC from the FELDER GROUP, a profit H08 from the FORMAT-4 range. “I have been making guitars by hand for 25 years, I had no knowledge of CNC and I thought that FELDER would be the best for me. As a new customer to CNC, I knew I would need a lot of help and it has always been there, I did the training and learnt the basics, from there anything else I needed I picked up via the telephone support and thanks to the Help from the staff at FELDER GROUP UK I was able to pick up it up easily.”

Since then Neil has purchased two more machines from FELDER’s Hammer range the A3-41 planer thicknesser equipped with the spiral-POWER silent cutterblock and the K3 basic panel saw. When talking about his machines Neil said “with the CNC accuracy is key, it works great with the Alphacam software and I can make up to five bodies at a time, it’s 100% accurate time after time”. Going on to say “I couldn’t go back to a normal cutterblock on my planer thicknesser now that I have used the silent-POWER one, it is so quiet, so accurate and the blades are so easy to change. The sliding table saw is superb, it’s still very industrial and the sliding table makes the small machine very powerful”. Neil finished by saying “I have used machines at a much higher price that are not as user friendly and not as good”

he woodworking industry is rapidly changing and in a world where technology is the main driving force of the future, digitalisation is key. Positioned at the forefront of HOMAG’s developments lies a digital platform specifically designed for manufacturers to gain more efficiencies from production as well as representing a universal transformation within the industry. Unveiled for the first time at LIGNA 2017, and more recently shown at the HolzHandwerk and Xylexpo exhibitions, HOMAG presented its latest technological partner, tapio - a cloud-based service built in partnership with Microsoft. Working across the entire manufacturing chain, the platform opens up the countless possibilities of networked production to all workshops. Whether it’s a small workshop, medium-sized operation or a global cooperation, tapio ensures the accessibility of true transparency and optimally controlled production. Pooling knowledge of mechanical engineering, servicing, software and ultimately the status of machinery, tapio provides operators with live updates of their complete manufacturing facility. Accessible through a mobile phone app, tablet or even a smart watch, automatic

alert notifications are sent highlighting where detailed attention is required. The platform also reports when future maintenance requirements are needed as well as sending warnings when a critical value exceeds or falls below a certain level, ensuring peak production times are not comprised. The data which tapio produces allows companies to monitor their entire production process, ensuring the performance of all equipment is maximised at all times.

ServiceBoard – fast support at your fingertips When error messages arise during production, operators sometimes find it difficult to solely rectify the problem and require the assistance of the HOMAG Service centre. ServiceBoard offers a simple, yet effective remote solution to ensure faults can be identified quickly with the aid of video diagnoses, ultimately avoiding any unplanned interruptions to production. Electronic layout plans, 3D models and drawings can easily be exchanged enabling better error identification via mobile video whilst the operators are in front of the machine. Operators are also able to easily keep up to date with machine maintenance by having all relevant documentation to hand as well as the opportunity to electronically order any parts via the online shop. With simple machine prediction the ServiceBoard also shows upcoming maintenances within Homag’s digital solution tapio revolutionising productivity for all workshops on a range of devices the calendar function.

DataSave – automatic data backup Whether resources are short or simply due to a lack of IT knowledge, data backup is sometimes overlooked within businesses, yet in situations where a machine has a malfunction this can be fatal for productivity: in some extreme cases, loss of data can lead to a complete system restart. DataSave ensures that data losses and related problems are a thing of the past. With this mobile solution, machine production data is guaranteed to be automatically and securely saved within the central cloud of tapio. Freely accessible at all times, this tapio function prevents machine downtime and service costs. MachineBoard – optimum machine operation Delays in production can have a crippling effect to manufacturing and are unwelcomed within any environment, yet the effective monitoring of machine operations can prevent any unnecessary delays. Nobody works more closely nor is more involved with machines than the operators themselves so, the opportunity to tend to machines in good time and continuously react flexibly is an unquestionable advantage. Whether the remaining time of a CNC program needs to be checked, impending set-up processes need to be viewed or remotely activating the glue unit on an edge bander, the MachineBoard’s capabilities are indisputably true time savers. Automatic push notifications can be displayed on smartphones or smartwatches allowing operators to act as soon as manual intervention is required. “

Alphacam is one of our energisers – it’s definitely helped us get where we are today. Those are the words of Gerard Magee, Director of family-run Allwood Architectural Joinery, which celebrated its 21st anniversary last year. Based at Ballymacken, Portlaoise, in the Irish Republic, the company originally focused on hotel and bar fit-outs, but diversified when the recession hit. He says their 5-axis Maka PE 70 pod and rail machine programmed with Alphacam helped them to stand out in the recession, by providing the ability to produce complex components. “It showed our capacity to do something different for clients, which was instrumental in getting us through the recession. One of those clients was Newbridge Silverware, and the ‘something different’ for them was an art deco cornice, based on a 1950’s ladies’ fan. “They loved that piece, and we did several shop fit-outs for them throughout the recession. I firmly believe that without Alphacam driving our 5-axis machine the company would not have survived at that time. And Production Manager Connor Magee explains how Alphacam continued to make a huge difference to them as the effects of the recession subsided. “It’s helped us grow and control our processes to produce parts, including complex components, much quicker, and expand our services to the commercial sector. Nowadays their customer base includes a number of bigname clients, having completed three fitouts for Google, along with Twitter’s Dublin operation, and Zendesk. As well as the Maka 5-axis machine, Alphacam also drives a 3-axis Biesse Rover 10x5 nester. Workshop Manager Eoin Byrne says: “While we’d always used Alphacam Ultimate Router with the Maka, when we got the Biesse and started

nesting, we quickly realised we needed the post to include that machine, too, to speed up the programming process. “That, in turn, has speeded up our overall production time, meaning we can turn jobs around much faster. He says Automation Manager has taken a “crazy amount of time out of programming, and the company could never go back to manual programming and remain competitive; a point echoed by Connor Magee: “Previously, we’d spend a minimum of six minutes optimising a single sheet. But with Alphacam we can have 30 sheets with up to 200 nested components, complete with labels and reports, at the machine in ten minutes. It takes the manual part out of the process by importing CAD drawings automatically, inputting directly to the machine. “We design our products in Sketchup, as many of the architects we work with like its final 3D visual. Once the drawings are approved we simply click a button to explode it, and the DXF files go down to the shop floor, run through Alphacam’s Automation Manager, and the individual components are nested. He says Automation Manager has revolutionised their production process. Previously, while a cutlist add-on to their Sketchup software nested the sheets, it all had to be done manually, and the machining was also applied manually. “Breaking down a typical kitchen ready for the CNC machine tool used to take us a full day. But with Alphacam’s Automation Manager that’s down to an hour – in some cases just half an hour. He says the process is quick and simple. “We break down our Sketchup drawing into separate files, and all components are nested in the sheet materials that we’ve

listed. Rules are set up for drilling, so all the tools and styles are applied automatically and everything is sent out to the machine with layouts. They also use Alphacam’s labelling system, so the machine operator only has to pull up the sheet, and when the parts come off they’re labelled and stacked on the trolley for forwarding to assembly. “It means everything’s tracked and organised on the system. Concluding, Connor Magee says it is important to keep up with each of Alphacam’s twice yearly releases. “Every update contains new or enhanced functionality that speeds up our process, making it easier and better. Alphacam is a huge part of our company now and is absolutely integral to the manufacturing process with our two CNC machine tools. “We certainly wouldn’t be able to hit our targets without it, especially on the number of large scale jobs we undertake on a regular basis. And in the future we’re likely to invest in a larger nester with offloading capabilities, and maybe a dowel drill/inserter. Alphacam will definitely be programming that, too. For further information: Tel: 01189 756084 E-mail: stewart.bint@verosoftware.com Allwood Architectural Joinery: http://www.Allwood.ie Alphacam: http://www.alphacam.com/

inning a major contract for a series of intricate acoustic panels covering a 60-metrelong ceiling prompted a joinery company to invest in CNC machine tools and Alphacam CAD/CAM software to program them. And taking the automation route has doubled the company’s turnover from £1.2m to £2.5m in just 12 months. Previously, Kent-based Joinery Fixing & Finishing Ltd used beam saws and bench work to manufacture bespoke cabinets, furniture, joinery, door frames and staircases for a variety of private clients and companies. But directors Tony Groves and his wife Claire realised they needed to automate complex panel production for a lottery-funded project restoring the Battersea Arts Centre, after the Grade ll Listed Building was severely damaged by fire. The restoration involved

keeping everything as close to the original as possible. Stuart Betts was hired as Production Manager because of his extensive expertise in CNC and Alphacam. “My first step was to install a new 4-axis Homag Vantage 43M machine tool in November

last year, with Alphacam coming a week later. I wouldn’t have felt comfortable working on this project without Alphacam.” Manufactured from 9 mm plywood, the ceiling comprised around 360 individual components run through the Homag… each one requiring a separate Alphacam program. Overall, the panels covered 56 metres in length, and around 18 metres at the arc radius. Stuart Betts explains that programming the entire ceiling took two weeks, and about five months to machine. “I created the components as 2D and 3D AutoCad drawings and transferred them into Alphacam for the toolpaths to be added. Where we had a bank of six rows of panelling they were identical, so I produced a program for the whole row, and we mass produced from that.” The design process involved drawing the panels as a series of 9 mm layers laid over each other in a different colour. “I did it all as one layer in AutoCad, converted it to a DXF file and dropped it straight into Alphacam.

“Once I’d got the drawing I set up a Machining Style for that particular program, allocating it to the layers. With other software we’d need to change every layer for the computer to recognise it, along with the line, to be able to do any machining. But I can control all that with Alphacam’s Machining Styles.” He says the first layer had to be recessed by 1 mm to allow a gold-plated centre to be installed. “That involved importing the 3D CAD file into Alphacam, putting all the styles on it, and the recess. The panels are 1810 mm square, and because the maximum sheet size the Homag will take is 1220 mm, we had to break each one down into two separate programs, so I’d run the component, then use half a sheet of ply for the second component and layer it over the top so the meeting joints matched, and it would form the full panel.” One aspect which he would not have attempted without Alphacam was to create a tolerance for the radii. “Pulling the two panels together on a radius meant there was a sag in the middle, so the backbone needed to grow slightly to accommodate the radius. That would have been extremely tricky to achieve without Alphacam.” With the shopfloor operatives readily taking to Alphacam, a second Homag – a BHX 050 –followed, and was fully commissioned in July. “Going from working on a bench and beam saw to CNC machine tools and Alphacam has changed their jobs considerably, and they’re excited about it as it’s taking the company in a very different direction. It’s all about keeping costs down, getting work out of the door much faster, getting our money in quicker, increasing turnover and improving the bottom line.” The Homags currently run around six hours a day. “Within this short time of having Alphacam it’s now a 100 per cent integral part of our production process, and was the main reason for brining in the second machine, which we’re using

mainly for carcassing, to make us more competitive.” Alphacam’s powerful parametric capability is giving the company the opportunity to develop its door business. “Common CAD geometry is created automatically, regenerating the file with any required variables, meaning there’s no need to redraw similar components. They’re built using standard geometry commands, with different sizes produced by simply modifying the values of one or more variables. It’s an absolute Godsend for that side of the business, as we don’t have to draw the component. We simply pull out a door that’s similar to the one we’re making, put in the sizes, drag and drop in all the ironmongery and send it to the router.” He says he has a door and door frame prepared and programmed, ready to start cutting wood on the machine tool in less than 15 minutes. And he also produces door rails, door styles, box frame windows and joinery components in Alphacam’s parametric library. “Once we’ve created a parametric program for any item, it’s so quick and easy to produce new components by

pulling a program from the library. Everything is simply driven from a measurement.” Stuart Betts has worked with all the Alphacam modules over the years – entry-level Essential, Standard, Advanced, and the 5-axis Ultimate. For Joinery Fixing & Finishing Ltd he opted for Advanced, which he says is perfect for their needs, with its powerful capability for complex 3D machining strategies, solid model importing and feature extraction, and constrained parametric part creation. In conclusion he says: “While nesting and parametrics are particularly valuable to our operation, the whole package combines to bring about a massive change to the company’s production. And its simple GUI makes it so user-friendly. “It’s definitely the way forward for us.” For further information: Tel: 01189 756084 Email: stewart.bint@verosoftware.com Joinery Fixing and Finishing: www.joineryfixingandfinishing.com Alphacam: www.alphacam.com

Nederman Insight provides customers with key insights that help them get more out of their filters with less effort and less cost.

How it Works Nederman Insight puts information at the fingertips of the user wherever they may be. It provides valuable data on how a filter is working and it also helps to build a broader understanding of the filtration system, its performance, maintenance needs, associated costs and potential improvements. The Insight technology incorporates a series of sensors that monitor conditions in the filtration system. From the sensors, data is securely uploaded to the cloud via an Industry 4.0 gateway. This data can easily be read and interpreted via the Nederman Insight web-based user interface and dashboard. What this gives the end user is around the clock access to real time and historical data that enables optimisation of filtration systems and an understanding of how to utilise it fully. This system performance is complemented by a risk management alert feature that informs the user when action is required to prevent extended downtime and keep the work place safe. This feature also helps meet the longer term need for environmental compliance whilst reducing the potential for incorrect filtration management.

Nederman has exciting plans for its Insight Industry 4.0 platform

This alert system ties-in with maintenance schedules and the access to historical data and the ongoing control of performance data will enable end users to plan maintenance needs. Nederman experts will help interpret the data and advise on settings, adjustments and product management strategies. The improved awareness and maintenance of the filtration system will allow businesses to detect problems before they arise. By resolving issues or replacing spare parts in good time, customers can avoid unplanned stops and the associated costs of unscheduled downtime. With increasing demand on sustainability, Nederman Insight gives the user greater control of energy consumption, emissions and safety. Whilst these benefits of the Nederman Insight system are genuinely impressive, the World Leading innovator can also offer considerably more features and benefits. The Nederman Insight ‘Action Centre’ will track filtration system performance and quickly identify issues, providing a full overview of filter operation via one or more dashboards with drill-down functions. Nederman is continually evolving the Insight platform by adding advanced modules that give greater functionality and more valuable insights into an air filtration system. At present, this includes a ‘Machine Learning’ smart algorithm that looks for patterns in data to help the user identify and

mitigate risks. With machine learning, filtration systems will automatically improve from experience, without being re-programmed. The ‘Workflow Engine’ module will help to manage business processes. It determines defined processes and workflows, orchestrating routines to carry out in case of an alert. Additionally, it will automatically set up e-mail notifications and contingency plans that will be available in an advanced ‘reporting’ platform that will provide more sophisticated and customised reports to gain insights into areas such as system performance, sustainability targets and investment requirements. Nederman has exciting plans for its Insight Industry 4.0 platform and to achieve the ambitious goals the company has set up a Digital Solutions Division. This division has been specifically created to develop digital solutions for a complete ecosystem of services that work in combination with a robust infrastructure for the Industry 4.0 platform. OFA International, a global leader in fume and dust extraction technology, has launched a new range of woodworking dust extraction units for small workshops and schools and colleges. The new DustPRO Wood range comprises six models, each tailored to specific performance requirements but all capable of capturing airborne wood dust that can cause serious health issues The units’ extraction range covers larger chippings down to dust just 0.3 μm (3 microns) in size, and their design makes them ideally suited to smaller workshops and education and training establishments. Each unit combines large filter capacity with high vacuum fume and dust extraction performance, and incorporates BOFA’s unique reverse flow air technology to enhance filter capture and ensure longer filter life. Other features include reusable bags, low

52

friction filters, High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) technology and drop-out chambers for wood chippings. “Sawing, routing, milling and particularly sanding processes are known to generate inhalable dust, with the potential to create lung disease and breathing problems unless appropriate extraction systems are in place,” says John Horsey, BOFA’s technical manager. “If not captured through effective local exhaust ventilation (LEV), this fine particulate can lead to occupational asthma, skin disorders, rhinitis and, in the case of hardwood dust, a rare type of nasal cancer. The fumes associated with dyes and solvents also need to be managed effectively.” By law, all employers must assess the risk to worker health by reference to workplace exposure limits (WEL) set by the Health & Safety Executive under Control of

PANEL & JOINERY PRODUCTION – SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations. Both airborne hardwood and softwood dusts have a WEL of 5mg/m3 averaged over an eight-hour period. Not only must employers install appropriate LEV, ideally a fume and dust extraction system, they must also test each LEV system every 14 months (effectively every year) and keep records for five years. “What’s commonly overlooked is that as well as having a primary health benefit, a properly designed and installed extraction system also delivers productivity gains because maintaining a dust-free environment keeps machinery in optimum working condition and can avoid costly downtime caused by equipment contamination,” says John Horsey. 6;CF8@EF-*F0$E@?:EBDAF F <?=BE, 5<:EBDA F"B7;E2CB7;EF.@B:CF Chris of Lasercut London purchased a new dust extractor in mid-April of this year. An avid fan of German high-end tools Chris was seeking out a second dust extractor to help with his own studio build, which started within that same month.

T

he studio build was to take place over 8 weeks and comprised of a complete custom fit out of his new show room design studio and fabrication space. As the walls were concrete block and brick he wanted to keep the dust down during the installation phase. “I already have a pretty good extractor but I found the power was a bit lacking, and I wanted a 35mm hose on the machine to improve suction. Instead of forking out for just a hose upgrade, I opted for a FEIN one which had the hose diameter I wanted as standard, and following a demo, definitely had the power I needed. During the build itself, I needed to use my SDS drill to deliver over 400+ holes into concrete block, and spent a lot of time cutting sheet material and using the router table. The extractor tip matched up to my existing nozzles and drill extractor I had available, and I used the FEIN one in conjunction with my existing one on the router table, it cleaning up much quicker than I expected. The building work lasted a little over two months, the extractor fitting with most alternative tools and accessories, although a few took a bit of fiddling to adapt them correctly. I have some criticisms. The first is that the hose does not have anywhere to be fastened, but to be fair this was solved by wrapping it around the body of the machine. Also, there is no variable flow on the compact 25L machine. I never expected anything like the power from a

machine this small; it sticks to everything, or sucks up anything within its path. I rarely had to sweep up at the end of each day. The thing I enjoyed the most was the extra time the extractor would run for after the tool trigger was released.

work, this machine is not suitable, but if you need dependable and powerful extractor when SDS drilling, using woodworking tools or generally cleaning up the studio, then I recommend this to all construction or renovation businesses.

For me, I was well chuffed with the little price for the FEIN tool. Even with my criticisms, for £220-50 this is a bargain, and whilst variable speed is good, maybe it isn’t worth the extra £200. The machine is easily moved about using the handle and I really like the shape, as it pivots around very nicely, and over uneven floors easily without marking the floor either. Despite using it every day since April, I am also still using the first filter bag with space left for another month or two. For delicate wood

I have a little man at home, and having been hustled into building cabinets during my summer break, I will be taking this machine home, to ensure he is not eating dust during construction!” The Dustex is available in 25-35L, L or M class from various FEIN dealers. owntime is costly to any business but when faced with a factory that operates a minimum of 20 hours a day and supplies over 45,000 cut parts for the production of 300 three-piece suites every 24 hours, fitting a brand-new extraction system into DFS’ Lincoln House Woodmill was no mean feat for dust extraction specialists, Dustraction. “To put things into perspective, one hour of downtime in our factory would cost us £10,000,” explains Eddie McDermott, Woodmill Manager at DFS Lincoln House Woodmill. “So, when installing a new extraction system, turning the machines off, or limiting the number of machines in use whilst it was being fitted, was simply not an option for us. We needed to use a company that we could rely on to get the job done quickly and efficiently. For us, this was Dustraction.” The site has grown significantly in the past few years, with the introduction of several new traditional woodworking machines and CNCs on the factory floor. Working off two separate cyclo-filter systems to accommodate the latest machines, Lincoln House Woodmill’s extraction systems had

reached their maximum capacity. And, with a new MZ CNC machine centre ready to be installed into the factory, Dustraction was set the task of creating a new extraction system that would simplify the operation and future-proof the business by offering 30% expansion, without resulting in any downtime. In order for the team to achieve this, Dustraction built the new extraction system around the existing design and, when it came to fitting the extraction system to the machines, the team worked when the factory was closed. “Dustraction even modified the old system so we could use our new MZ machine centre before our new system was fully up and running,” adds Eddie. “This is why I like working with Dustraction. They really do go the extra mile for their customers and they get the job done with minimal fuss. Where other companies may have been put off by the idea of working late nights and weekends, the Dustraction team put the hours in and the results speak for themselves.” The system’s reliability was also an important factor for Eddie to consider. “For us, money saving comes from having no break downs. We work to a ‘just in time’ philosophy, so a fault with our extraction system could lead to production grinding to a halt. Customer service is extremely important to DFS and delivering our customers’ orders on time is paramount to the company’s ongoing success. Having used Dustraction before, I have every confidence in the new system and I know the team are on hand if any issues do arise.” The new Dustrax 4X6 cyclo system, which has been designed specifically for operating on a continuous basis, has streamlined the overall dust extraction process and has allowed for 30% growth if new machines need to be added to the factory floor. Maintenance has also been minimised, reducing ongoing downtime and servicing costs, thanks to very few

moving parts and a robust 3mm thick mild steel sheet body. The clever design also extends the life of the filter sleeves and guarantees efficiency levels lower than 0.2 mg/m³, falling in line with existing European Legislation. Eddie adds, “The new cyclo system fits the brief perfectly and it was installed with minimal disruption to our work. I have every faith in what Dustraction’s team do and the systems they install. They are experts in their field and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.” The relationship is also set to continue, as planning for another extraction upgrade in another site is already in the pipeline. Dustraction is due to start work on the new system in the coming months. For further information: Tel: 0116 271 3212 ww.dustraction.co.uk @DustractionLtd on Twitter

he owner of a furniture manufacturing company is delighted with his purchase of a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology, as it delivers everything promised regarding its provision of free heating and reduction in waste disposal costs. Barn 6 Furniture is a high-end bespoke furniture manufacturer that has been trading for around 22 years. No stranger to biomass technology, the company already owned 2 wood waste heaters. However, when Richard Bullock, MD of Barn 6 visited another business and saw a heater from Wood Waste Technology, he decided that when the business moved to its new 5300 sq metre workshop in Letchworth he was going to invest in a new one‌ Richard explains “Having seen the heater from Wood Waste Technology whilst visiting another business, I couldn’t believe the difference between the wood waste heaters that we’d got from one manufacturer, and the ones produced by Wood Waste Technology. So, I decided it was time to replace and upgrade. The whole investment in biomass technology just makes sense – what’s the point of throwing wood away then paying for heating!â€? Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT10 wood waste heater into the furniture workshop at the end of last year. Richard says: “We’re very impressed with the new wood waste heater – it definitely seems to burn better than our previous ones. It does exactly what Wood Waste Technology promised it would do. We especially like how cleanly the new heater burns, as that was one of our worries being situated in such a populated area.â€? Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology says: “Businesses with a significant amount of wood waste can get payback on their

investment in a wood waste heater in as little as 12 months because of the savings that can made by reducing heating and skip hire bills. Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. Dust Extraction

ust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) have supplied and installed a complete dust extraction system at Auditoria Services’ manufacturing facility in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The energy-efficient system, which features an externally-sited, high-performance modular filter unit, also benefits from the inclusion of Ecogate® extraction optimisation technology. Founded in 1977, Auditoria Services is a family business with a wealth of experience at its disposal, and is widely-acknowledged as the UK’s market leader in the design, manufacture and installation of fixed, retractable and folding seating for theatres, cinemas, lecture rooms and sporting venues. The company is extremely proud of its reputation for manufacturing auditorium seating to the highest quality

standards and, wherever possible, the company endeavours to patronise local companies and to utilise locally-sourced materials in the manufacturing process. Auditoria’s joinery manufacturing workshop is well-equipped with a range of highspeed woodworking equipment; including a vertical moulder, various saws and sanders, as well as edgebanding and CNC routing machinery. However, it was becoming clearly apparent that the existing dust extraction system was no longer coping efficiently with the demands being placed on it, and so the company invited DCS to undertake a full survey of the factory, and also accepted the offer of a free energy-saving appraisal. The existing filter unit, which was internallysited, wasn’t providing effective suction from the woodworking machines but, more

significantly, the collected waste was being fed directly to a briquettor. This arrangement had persistently proved to be problematic for Auditoria; whenever a glitch occurred with the briquettor there was nowhere for the waste to go – the only solution was to shut down the entire extraction system to prevent waste backing up and blocking the filter unit. The proposal put forward by DCS was accepted and the company installed and commissioned an NFSZ3000 3HJLR Screw Filter unit, with the capacity to handle up to 24,500m3 of dust-laden air per hour through its patented antistatic Superbag filter media. The system is powered by a 45kW direct drive main fan, extracting wood chips and dust from a total of 10 machines, and the ATEX-certified filter construction includes 3 explosion relief panels. Dust is continually removed from the filter media by a reverse air regeneration fan, directing it to the lower hopper section of the filter unit, from where it is dispelled by a screw conveyor before being transferred pressure-free, via a rotary valve, to a new hopper installed inline ahead of the briquettor. The storage

hopper is effectively a buffer unit; ensuring a regular flow of waste to the briquettor and, in the event of a breakdown, the rotary valve includes an emergency discharge outlet to a bulk-bag container – allowing uninterrupted operation of the extraction system. Although the system installed at Auditoria has the capacity to provide sufficient extraction to allow continuous operation of all machinery throughout the working day, this is a scenario which, in common with all joinery workshops is seldom, if ever, a reality. With variations in machine usage, depending on the day’s production requirements, downtime for loading and offloading, shift changeovers and operator rest breaks, extraction is typically required for around 80% of the working day – yet the extraction fan on a traditional system will continue to run at full load, all day, every day. At Auditoria, the energy-saving appraisal carried out by DCS revealed that installing an Ecogate® system would reduce the average extraction volume requirement by 22% which, remarkably, equates to a reduction in power consumption of over 50% ¬– reducing the company’s electricity bills significantly, and providing a return on the investment in just over 4 years, with continued nett savings for years to come. In the workshop, DCS installed an Ecogate® automatic damper in the

ductwork to each machine. The dampers open and close automatically when an individual machine comes on or offline and the change in extraction requirement is signalled to the Ecogate® greenBOX 12 controller, which in turn instructs a variable speed drive inverter unit to adjust the fan speed accordingly. UK Sales Manager for Ecogate Ltd, Ian Rayner, who assisted DCS with integration of Ecogate® technology into the dust extraction system design, commented: “The data that DCS gathered during the site survey showed that Auditoria were consuming over 93,000kWh of electricity per year and, with electricity costs rising year on year, the option to invest in the

Ecogate® system and reduce power consumption by at least half was a nobrainer for Auditoria.” And, as Ian continued to explain: “Installing an Ecogate® on-demand extraction optimisation system not only reduces power consumption and customers’ electricity bills but, because fan speed is continuously controlled to exactly match extraction requirements, in real time, wear and tear on component parts of the extraction system is reduced, noise levels in the factory are noticeably lower, and the reduction in average airflow effectively provides additional filter capacity to accommodate machine changes and future expansion.” Auditoria director, John Penistone, is understandably delighted with the difference the new installation has made, and was equally appreciative of the role played by Dust Control Systems: “We were impressed with the professional service DCS provided from day one and, during the actual installation, their engineers worked efficiently around our production team. In just 7 days, including a weekend, the new extraction was up and running and the Ecogate® system commissioned just a few days later.”
