NEWS Environmental First For KBB Supplier EGGER is the first wood-based panel board manufacturer in the UK to be awarded the upgraded ISO ISO14001 standard for its Environmental Management System at its Hexham site. This new ISO 140001:2015 international accreditation is only awarded to those companies who satisfy a rigorous, externally audited programme and can demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the environment. Paul Turner, environmental, health & safety manager at EGGER, explains: “EGGER is extremely focused on reducing its environmental impact and achieving the new standard underlines this. “The ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System will operate alongside our existing ISO 50001 Energy Management accreditation and acts as another incentive for us to continue with our aim to further minimise our environmental footprint and our production efficiencies on an ongoing basis.” Improvements to the new standards The new standard has been introduced to reflect the increasingly complex environments in which businesses operate. It aims to help companies identify, manage, monitor and control their environmental issues in a ‘holistic’ manner. Paul Turner, added: “The new standard is focusing more on companies developing proactive initiatives to protect the environment, including sustainable resource use and environmental impacts associated with product use and end-of-life treatment or disposal.

“This ties in extremely well with our company mission of ‘Creating more from wood’. At EGGER we operate a closed-loop cycle for chipboard production, this means very little waste is generated in our manufacturing processes. “Our forestry operations manage and harvest woodlands, our waste wood subsidiary Timberpak provides recycled wood for us to make chipboard and our manufacturing processes lock in CO2. Only wood that cannot be recycled is used for our energy requirements. We work closely with our hauliers to gain a 70% figure for the backhauling capabilities of vehicles, for maximum efficiency and reduced environmental impact.” Ongoing environmental improvements EGGER is the largest chipboard manufacturer in the UK, producing 40% of the UK’s requirements. Since 2006, it has invested over £200m at its Hexham site and in the last six years alone has committed more than £100 million into highly energyefficient plant machinery and processes to reduce the plant’s consumption of fossil fuels. This has included a new glue-making plant, the replacement of three upgrading lines, as well as new technology on the chipboard line that enables the company to increase its efficiency and output. Dr Keith Lloyd Jones, lead auditor at Exova BM TRADA Certification Ltd said: “I congratulate EGGER on achieving the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management

Paul Turner, environmental health & safety manager by the Egger Hexham site reed beds

System Certification. Throughout my dealings with the company I have found them to be thoroughly dedicated to minimising the impact their activities have on the environment, and the latest standard certainly enhances this commitment.” The attainment of the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certification comes shortly after Timberpak won at the National Recycling Awards. The company was voted the outright winner in the Resource Management Business of the Year category by demonstrating exceptional customer service, market innovation, growth and high performance, as well as handling waste responsibly.

Combilift Set For Expansion Combilift, the manufacturer of 4-way forklifts and other innovative handling solutions, is set to double its output in the next few years as its new factory nears completion. ¤40 million has been invested in the new 46,000m factory on a 40 hectare site, which will be the largest single manufacturing plant under one roof in Ireland. Combilift invented the world’s first i.c. engine powered, all-wheel drive multidirectional forklift in 1998 and has experienced exceptional growth ever since. The new global HQ and production facility will include a dedicated Research and Development building and adjoining administrational offices and is based in the company’s home of Monaghan, Ireland,

close to where Combilift was first established. Production of some model ranges such as the Straddle Carrier has already moved to the new site, which will be fully operational in the spring of 2018. The expansion will also create around 200 new jobs, mainly for skilled technicians and design engineers. Combilift’s products are a popular choice in the furniture and joinery sector due to their ability to handle loads safely in confined spaces and for their space saving storage and versatile indoor/outdoor operation. “Whether you handle long awkward loads, pallets, containers, oversized products or a combination of these, there is a Combilift to suit your requirements. We

are continually adding to our range, so keep an eye on our website or visit us at trade fairs to keep up to date on developments,” said Martin McVicar, MD, Combilift.

NEWS Thomas Winfield Completes The First Foundation Degree In Kitchen Design At Bucks New University Three years ago, Thomas Winfield started the Foundation degree in Kitchen Design at Bucks New University. Today, he has a pass with merit, and a new-found respect for kitchen design. Thomas Winfield was sponsored by Blum UK – who lead the way in apprentices in their parent country of Austria. He comments, “I really enjoyed the course, and being exposed to the many different sides of design thinking. One lecture which really stood out was by Andreas Fabian, where he led an interpretation of design using the shapes and parts of spoons! I also enjoyed a project management scheme, which included a trip to the Roundhouse factory, following a kitchen from initial concept to the end installation. One of our most challenging projects was to design the kitchen area for a Maggie Centre, this was

in Dundee, designed by Frank Gehry, but it was great to be using our skills in a reallife situation.” The course consists of “blendedlearning” online tutorials, with weekly material released. There are also bi-weekly individual Skype discussions with lecturers, and three residential weekends a year. The students are expected to do approximately 15 hours a week, from September to June. The course is open for applications now for the 2017/18 year, at www.tket.co.uk As to the future for Thomas Winfield? “This course is going to be very useful in my role as Test Drive co-ordinator for our Test Drive kitchen at Blum in Milton Keynes, where retailers and consumers can bring their plans, and we create their kitchen using life-sized kitchen units, and then give advice about any changes they may find necessary.”

NEWS BA Components & Lark & Larks Feature On DIY SOS When kitchen & bedroom door manufacturer BA Components were approached by Lark & Larks about supplying doors for DIY SOS, they jumped at the chance. Steve Larkin, the MD at Lark & Larks spoke about how this opportunity to help came about; ‘We decided to take part in DIY SOS because we’ve been big fans of the show for years and couldn’t say no when DIY SOS contacted us to help out with a local family who were in an unfortunate situation. We like to help out with local charity work each year and it feels great to be in a position to help. We also work closely with another charity http://hhho.org.uk/ that we have been supporting since it started about 5 years ago. We’ve helped this great charity in lots of ways over the years and get a great sense of satisfaction giving back to the local community.’ After speaking with the DIY SOS designer Gabrielle Blackman, Lark & Larks decided to

send a sample of BA Components Pronto range as it is an in stock door and despatched within 48 hours. With such a quick turnaround, it was a great choice for them. Gabrielle decided to go with the Malton Hemlock Nordic, which was a great choice as it looked fantastic fitted with the curved units and black granite worksurfaces. When the show was aired the couple were shown their brand new kitchen Steve from Lark & Larks tells us they were sure ‘it was biggest WOW they gave when it was revealed, so we’re over the moon and hope they enjoy their beautiful new home as family for many years to come.’ ‘We supplied and installed the whole kitchen for free with the help of BA supplying the doors free of charge and the fact that we manufactured the units also helped with costs. We would love to work on another project with DIY SOS again at some point in the future.’

NEWS Festool Has A Successful Roadshow Thanks To Pedal Power Festool, the leading supplier of high-end power tools and accessories, is on its way to raising more than £25,000 for the British Lung Foundation (BLF) and to promote lung health to UK tradespeople. The company launched a Cycle Challenge last month as part of its “Breathe Easy with Festool Dust Extraction” campaign, featuring Wattbikes on its impressive UK roadshow as part of the European tour. Three lucky participants won £500 of Festool prizes for biking the fastest mile, three miles and five miles. Phil Elson, managing director of Healy’s Tools in St Albans, Hertfordshire, very generously trebled the money collected throughout the 15 stops across the UK and Ireland. He said: “We love hosting the Festool Tour as it’s a chance for us to offer our customers the opportunity to demo tools and receive professional advice. With the giveaways and prize draws customers can get a lot more for their money. “The roadshow gives us a chance to say thank you to our customers by being able to give them that extra bit more through giveaways, low prices and food and drink. For new customers it was a great chance to find out what both Healy's Tools and Festool have to offer. “We were really impressed with the hard work of the team to raise money for the BLF and it was our pleasure to donate a sizeable cheque matching their efforts.” Jonathon Burcham, Marketing Manager

at Festool, said: “We were blown away with Phil’s generous offer to match the money raised. We had a very successful roadshow and would like to also thank all our trade partners up and down the county, and across the Irish Sea, for being such great hosts.” Featuring Festool’s premium range of tools, the fully equipped truck provided trade visitors with the opportunity to use the tools and talk to a team of experts. Visitors got a sneak peak of upcoming products, as well as Festool’s complete range of dust extractors that help safeguard a dust-free work environment. As part of its fundraising initiatives, Festool has sold more than 100 top quality cycling tops through its eBay page here: http://bit.ly/Festooltop. The money made from the limited edition cycle shirts and the roadshow will go towards research into life threatening lung diseases, as well as help provided by the BLF for those living with conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), mesothelioma, asthma and lung cancer. The truck tour began in Portsmouth and called at Twickenham, Newmarket, Leyton, St Albans, High Wycombe, Mansfield, Derby, Rotherham, Glasgow, Dunfermline, Blackburn, Belfast and Dublin. See photos from the event here: https://www.festool.co.uk/campaigns/roads how. Jonathon Burcham added: “The sad truth

in our industry is that tradespeople are four times more likely to contract asthma compared to other workers. The HSE says tradespeople must always use dust extraction but we know that’s sadly not always adhered to. “We’ve been promoting the importance of safer, dust-free working conditions with the help of the BLF for the past couple of years and our latest campaign highlights the importance of lung health amongst tradespeople who are most at risk.” Ideal for mobile use and assembly, the Festool range of safe and robust dust extractors are lightweight and compact, ideal to transport from job to job, again saving time for the tradesperson. Festool offers a range of dust extractors which are suitable for any job from low to high class dust, including general work to anything that is a known carcinogen including lead, cadmium and asbestos. REVENUE REPORT Blum reports revenue increase of 8% in the financial year 2016/2017 Austrian fittings manufacturer once more reports a growth in turnover Innovative products, international market presence, consistent investments worldwide and highly flexible employees are the factors that have once more helped the Blum group to a revenue increase in the financial year 2016/2017. The family enterprise reports an increase of 8 % compared to the previous year. • 1,788.08 million euro turnover; an increase of 8 % compared to the previous year • Sales growth in all market regions worldwide • Successful launch of product innovations • Consistent investment – regionally and internationally With a revenue increase of 8 % to 1,788.08 million euro, fittings manufacturer Blum reports a successful conclusion to the financial year of 2016/2017, which ended on 30 June. Innovative products, international market presence, con-sistent investments in R&D and highly qualified staff mean that the family enter-prise headquartered in Höchst (Austria) can celebrate a revenue increase that is worth its name. 48% of the company turnover was generated within the EU, 16% in the US. Blum supplies 120 markets all over the world, making it one of Austria's largest export companies. In June 2017, the

company won the prestig-ious Austrian export prize, the "Global Player Award", in recognition of its out-standing performance in exports.

Employees as the basis of success "The high level of motivation of our worldwide team and the excellent cooperation of all departments and organisations within our group are an essential building block of our success", says CEO Gerhard E. Blum, summing up the fundamental importance that Blum attaches to its

employees. During the past financial year, 7,140 persons on average worked for the fitting manufacturer, an increase of 291 persons compared to the previous year. On 1 September, 93 new apprentices will start their technical training at Blum Austria, 15 of them girls. This corresponds to a 16% increase of the number of female apprentices compared to the previous year. In total, Blum has been training 341 apprentices within the group since last autumn, 16 of whom work at Blum USA. Three new Business Trainees started in the UK as part of an initiative to increase training throughout the business.

Growth rates in all market regions

During the past financial year, the fittings manufacturer based in Vorarlberg has seen growth rates across all market regions. For instance, most markets in Western Europe reported an increase in sales. The only exception was Great Britain, where the falling rate of the pound caused an artificial decline due to the value of Sterling against the Euro. In fact the overall market delivered an increase in Sterling revenue in line with our worldwide performance. Eastern Europe continued to thrive, with growth figures also reported for Russia and Turkey. The fittings specialist also achieved excellent results for North American and

the Asia-Pacific region. Throughout the financial year of 2016/2017, mate-rial prices remained a challenge. Steel prices soared towards late 2016, fol-lowed by zinc, packaging materials and other listed commodities.

Investments during the financial year 2016/2017 Total investments of the Blum group in the financial year 2016/2017 amounted to 174.62 million euro. In Vorarlberg, two construction phases of plant 4 in Bre-genz were completed. Construction work on the future plant 8 in Dornbirn, the new Blum stamping centre, is in full swing. With 66 million euro, this project constitutes the largest single investment in the company's history. The first pro-duction hall is scheduled to be operational by mid-2018; the second construc-tion phase should be completed by summer 2019. Plant 2 in HĂśchst will also include a new administrative building, with employees set to move in by the end of 2018. An important share of Blum investments goes into the expansion of international Blum marketing organisations. In the UK the Experience Centre opened in September 2016. In Greece, the company has commenced operation of its new office and warehouse complex; in Australia, the expansion of the au-tomated warehouse has been completed, and the new high-bay warehouse in Poland will be operational by the end of this year. Preservation of

The careful handling of environmental resources has always been important to Blum. During the past financial year, the company succeeded in reducing its energy consumption by 31,412,000 kWh, the equivalent of approx. 5,150 tonnes of CO2. This is made possible through decade-long investments in envi-ronmentally friendly technologies, for instance a ventilation and pressurised air system with waste heat recovery in the individual plants, the use of photovoltaic modules on the roofs and façades of buildings and many other initiatives. To-gether with other Austrian companies, Blum is also an active member in three environmental networks: the Klimaneutralitätsbßndnis 2025, the Energy Effi-ciency Network and the "Wirtschaft Mobil" network. Eight electric cars are available to employees for local work-related journeys.

differentiation throughout its product groups, for instance with new colours and designs for box systems, onyx black as an additional colour for hinges, a fitting solution for thin doors, and a new generation of lifts in a linear design and particularly small installation size. The Blum offer is completed by a range of services for manufacturers, from planning to ordering and manufacturing, all the way to assembly and fitting.

Outlook for the upcoming financial year 2017/2018 "The economic trend in Europe is positive overall. The biggest factor of uncertainty from our point of view is caused by the Brexit negotiations", is how Man-aging Director Gerhard E. Blum cautiously assesses the upcoming months. The fittings manufacturer hopes that the principles of European free trade will be upheld. For the Asia-Pacific region, Blum expects the positive economic devel-opments to continue. Signs of economic recovery in South America also con-tribute to the overall positive outlook.

New products and services According to data from the Austrian Patent Office, Vorarlberg is the most innovative Austrian province, with 62 registered inventions per 100,000 inhabitants. In this year's ranking published by the Patent Office, Blum came third. At the interzum, the leading trade fair for the furniture supply industry that was held in Cologne in May, Blum presented numerous new products and services, aimed at safeguarding its position as a reliable system partner in the long-term. Thanks to its innovative stance, the company offers a greater margin for design and

Increased Productivity For Gable Joinery When a company, formed in 2009, reaches the level of success they have achieved in just 8 years due to a reputation earned through quality and customer service, it speaks volumes when they turn to Biesse Group UK to purchase a Viet sander to provide a finish, which compliments their hard-earned standing in the market place. Working for many high-end retail outlets, accountants, legal firms and blue chip industrial giants, Gable Joinery are proud to

provide large and medium sized joinery projects within this prestigious sector. “The sander definitely opened up new markets for us, especially for fire doors,” enthused Managing Director, Alan Smith. “We bought the sander to increase our own productivity having previously finished by hand and immediately increased our efficiency by 30%. The machine is that good, we can now sand paper faces, creating a finish which now

saves spraying time.” “The main reason we chose Viet was the build quality as well as the quality of finishing. We always look at the long term, so longevity of the machine is of paramount importance in ensuring longterm reliability and finishing excellence.” Co-Director, Heather Smith commented, “We didn’t even consider that the machine could sand paper, it’s absolutely exceeded our expectations.”

“In fact it’s done more than we wanted it to do”, continued Alan, “The very nature of our work means we make some weird and wonderful things (such as 95mm thick fire doors) and the sander now plays an important part in our calibrating and finishing processes.” “It will have paid for itself in just 2 years on cost savings alone. We’ve reduced our spraying cycle as well as increased the material efficiency with less rejects from the spay shop due to the finishing quality of the sander”. Heather concludes, “The sander has had a massive impact on productivity. We make more in a day and achieve excellent and consistent quality.” Gable Joinery are also proud owners of a Biesse Rover K pod and rail CNC Machining Centre as well as an Akron 1400 edgebander, all with Biesse’s 5 year Total Care warranty and service package.

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

CASE STUDY Browns 2000 Selects HOMAG For New 60 Metre Laser Edge Banding Line Established in 1983, Browns 2000 is a family owned and managed business with a manufacturing facility of over 300,000 sq. ft. in Northumberland. The state of the art factory is equipped with the latest machinery to provide high quality doors and components to the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom trades. “We currently manufacture over 25,000 made to measure doors and glass splashbacks every week,” explains Graeme Brown, son of the founder. He continues, “The popularity of our Glacier range has been increasing since its launch and the number of colours and finishes on offer continues to expand year on year. “As with any successful business, our aim is to stay one step ahead of the demand from our customers. Our philosophy of investing in the best machinery on the market has put us in good stead with our customers who appreciate that we put our money where our mouth is and buy the best equipment available. This gives them confidence and peace of mind that we will always deliver a quality product on time and at a competitive price.”

Investing in a new laser edge banding line “To keep ahead of demand we made the decision to invest in an advanced laser edge banding line. We had been using Italian laser edge banders for some time, but it was a manual process which was timeconsuming and expensive. We wanted to automate the process, speed it up and yet at the same time improve the quality of the finished products. “When faced with such a significant investment there is a temptation to fall back on what you are familiar with. At Browns 2000, however, we take a different stance. We always approach such capital expenditure decisions with a completely open mind, the aim being to find the right long-term solution for the business; we refuse to take the easy or perceived ‘safe’ route. “Consequently, we evaluated all the options on the market to see which would

16 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

The cur panels are placed on to the start of the 60 metre laser edge banding line

best suit our needs. The quality of the machinery out there is very high and most solutions would probably do an OK job. We, however, wanted more; it was vital that this investment would deliver from the word go in every sense of the word. “The equipment had to be reliable leading edge technology that would futureproof our manufacturing to keep us competitive in the years ahead. It had to perform to the exacting quality standard our customers demand. It also had to be able to run at high speeds so we can maintain our record of meeting demanding lead times. “Also, the relationship with the supplier had to be one of trust and openness. We expect fast responses if issues arise and with technologically advanced machinery they always will. From the outset, we found HOMAG to be truly professional. Simon Brooks went out of his way to make sure we were happy with the specification of the laser line. He is extremely knowledgeable and willing to help, so it really is a pleasure doing business with him.”

A smooth and well-orchestrated installation “The installation procedure was very thorough and everything went smoothly. Our production manager, Richard Jenkins, went over to Germany to see the line when it was

built and make sure it was going to do exactly what we wanted it to. HOMAG builds and tests its lines completely at its factory prior to delivery which enabled us to be absolutely certain that the machinery did everything we required before it arrived. “He was extremely satisfied with what he saw and so the installation was planned for December 2016 when we closed for the Christmas period. Once the machinery arrived, the engineers from Germany just got on with the job and we were fully operational by the end of February this year. “They gave our operators three days training on site which went very well. Although it was a new software system for them and hence a steep learning curve, they found it very intuitive and were able to get to grips with it quickly. “The edge banders have been 100 per cent reliable and are easy to use so it has enabled us to improve the finish of our doors and yet increase the volumes we are producing. This is key for our business and takes the pressure off us. Quality is vitally important, service is important too, but lead times are critical these days and this laser line just eats through work and makes our lives a lot easier.”

A fast, reliable, automated laser edge banding line “Previously, we had seven laser edge banders in total and the work was put

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

CASE STUDY through those machines. But there were a lot more manual operations, it took longer and we knew we had to improve the quality to remain competitive. “The new laser line consists of four HOMAG KAL 370 profiLine laserTec edge banders with a feeding table at the front of the line and a rotary transfer unit in the middle. Each door or drawer component that requires edging on all four sides, passes first through the edge bander situated on the left and then is immediately cross transferred to the edge bander on the right where the opposite edge is applied. “As each door exits the second edge bander it goes onto a rotary transfer unit which turns it 90 degrees ready for the next edge bander which is again on the left. After that it automatically goes through the last edge bander on the right, so at the end of the line some 60 metres from where it started, each component has had edging applied automatically to all four sides. The beauty of this line is that every single panel can be of a different size and the line can handle them all without the need for stoppage or adjustments. “With the new line we can produce ten bespoke doors a minute which is significantly faster than we could achieve before. The high gloss and super matt finishes on our Glacier range of doors demand a premium quality finish and the new line is exceeding expectations on this front. “We could have an order from a customer which has 30 different colours and 30 different sizes on it so we have to be able to produce these items quickly and

The transfer unit rotates the panels in the middle of the line – so all required sides can be edged

with a high quality finish; the HOMAG laser line allows us to achieve this without slowing down production. The new laser line is so fast compared to our previous edge banders, it has released an incredible amount of production capacity which has allowed us to offer our customers an even better service. “It was a big decision to step away from an existing supplier, but going with HOMAG has proved to be the right decision. The quality, reliability and speed are impressive; it’s been a tremendous investment for the business and we are looking forward to it paying for itself sooner rather than later,” concludes Graeme Brown.

HOMAG KAL 370 profiLine laserTec edge bander The KAL 370 profiLine laserTec edge bander is equipped for a wide range of edge banding applications and is ready for networked production. It offers high performance in a compact space and is suitable for processing of all kinds of edge materials including solid wood, coil and strip material, melamine, PVC, ABS, aluminium, acrylic and veneer edges. It delivers optimum ‘zero joint’ edge quality with the edges and panels joined using an aligned laser beam whose oscillating action melts a wafer-thin function layer of the edging material. The HOMAG KAL 370 is maintenancefriendly and offers a greater economy due to minimised extraction output, low energy requirement and the best possible cost-toperformance ratio. With a wide choice of equipment the KAL 370 provides a high degree of flexibility and can be tailored to meet specific manufacturing requirements. If you would like more information or a demonstration of any of the HOMAG edge banders, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG on 01332 856424.

PROFILE

SCM’s Focus On Innovation The group confirmed its solidity by closing 2016 with a turnover of 600 million euro, up 15%. Systems for flexible industrial productions have doubled. SCM has become the reference brand for the woodworking sector, maintaining the heritage of the original brands in the names of the models. SCM embraces 2017 strengthened by a continuous and brilliant growth. 2016 ended with a turnover of 600 million Euro, up 15% compared to 2015, confirming its solid financial position with a good cash flow. An extraordinary result that has been driven by the wood sector, which has exceeded 430 million in turnover, with a growth of over 15%. 2017 began with a double digit increase in orders and turnover, a further improvement on the already good results of recent years. SCM’s confirms its leadership position in the technologies for woodworking processes, that today are represented by a single brand: SCM. The models inherit the distinctiveness and names of the original brands - Morbidelli for CNCs, Stefani for edgebanders, DMC for sanders, Gabbiani for beam saws, Celaschi for profiling machines and double-end tenoners, and so on. All market leading brand names that are rooted in the history of woodworking and that from SCM DNA. The doubling of the turnover for cell systems, plants and production lines for flexible industrial productions has been particularly satisfying for SCM. They are demanding orders, with investment costs that range from one and a half million to ten million Euro and the leap forward of this sector proves the maturity achieved by SCM Engineering. “Cell Lean 4.0” from panel to assembled furniture with one operator The “Cell Lean 4.0” is a concrete application of the concepts of “Industry 4.0” and “mass customization”. The aim of the cell is to meet the individual needs of the client, whilst maintaining the advantages of the industrial production. The whole system is completely automated, managed by the Maestro Watch software, supported by an anthropomorphic robot fitted with a piece recognition viewer and managed by a single, not necessarily expert, operator. The “Cell Lean 4.0” is extremely flexible and able to produce a wide variety of pieces, from the production of a large number of panels ready

18 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

to be assembled to “batch one”. The cell uses standard, absolutely reliable, high performing, easy to use and configure machines. The system operates automatically from the moment the order is launched and is open to every operating system. The cell is therefore able to automatically manage with a single operator, all the machining phases, starting from the standard panel to the assembly of the furniture. During Ligna 2017 the “Cell Lean 4.0” was used to produce libraries that have been installed in the recently rebuilt schools in Central Italy, destroyed in the 2016 summer and autumn earthquakes. A heuristic algorithm revolutionises the panel sizing software The new Maestro Suite software was presented at Ligna 2017. The most significant development affects Maestro Cut, the software for single blade panel saws that is fitted with a new completely “multi-touch” user interface on a 21” 16:9 screen, which makes management extremely easy. Maestro Cut, available across the whole range of panel saws, can be used to manage all the machine functions. The top of the line performance is achieved with the Maestro Ottimo Cut, the new optimiser produced in collaboration with a well-known Italian university, that has developed an extraordinary heuristic algorithm. This cutting optimiser for beam saws reduces calculation times from 10 to 30% and produces cutting diagrams that reduce waste by up to 50%. This achievement

places Maestro Ottimo Cut at the absolute pinnacle of its category. The CNC work centres have also seen new developments. The Maestro CNC has the new Maestro 3D function, which allows for the automatic creation of sophisticated machining programs, such as the ones required to create bas-reliefs. The Maestro CNC specialised machining operations have been augmented with the new version of Maestro Nest, that guarantees an infinite number of new nesting operations. Maestro Setting, an optimiser for stand-alone and line drilling units, is a new development that allows for the tooling of drilling cycles and reduces the times of the machining cycle, with a significant competitive advantage for users. All SCM software is open system to allow any type of connection with third party software, for the total control of the machine functions and ensuring that operators can work simply and intuitively. SCM becomes the single brand of the wood sector, each model maintains the distinctiveness and names of the original brands. Therefore within the group, SCM brings together the wood working technology and CMS the technologies developed to machine composites, aluminium, plastic, wood, glass, stone and metal.

Kündig – Improved Quality For finished Surfaces Cubby Construction is a multi-disciplined business operating throughout the UK that has been a leading name in construction, civil engineering, joinery manufacture and installation, and sustainable housing since 1968. Last year the joinery workshop purchased a new Kündig Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L sander, delivered in October 2016. Speaking nine months later, workshop foreman, Mariusz Pietruszka, expressed his delight with the performance the sander is providing. Cubby has a longstanding reputation for the manufacture of high quality domestic and commercial joinery for fitting by the client’s appointed contractor, or by Cubby craftsmen themselves. Working in both hard and soft woods, as well as modern composites and fibreboards, the company makes a wide variety of specially designed, bespoke or short run items. Products range from specialist one offs, staircases, doors and windows, panelling, fitted furniture and premium quality kitchens. See www.cubby.co.uk for more information. Mariusz explained that the previous sander was twenty years old, and had come to the end of its working life. “The old sander was causing more damage than sanding, so we decided to replace it with something that was flexible for veneer work, windows, doors, lacquer denibbing and denibbing for spray finishing. “I did my research, and found out that Kündig would be the right machine for us. It

has some of the best reviews on the market, I also looked to see how many second hand Kündig machines were available and was only able to find one which was over 20 years old. I took this to be a good indicator of the Kündigs quality and people buying them to keep. Mariusz listed the advantages of the Kündig sander and it has saved us at least 20 hours/week of labour compared to the old sander. It has also reduced our dependency on hand held sanders which has also saved time and the issues associated with HAVS. Now 95% of our work goes through the Kündig. “It is user friendly, and it also has a fixed bed, which is very handy for our work. The extension table is also advantageous when working with long items to keep them level and maintaining the finish quality. “It also has the shear head, which is very appealing, because you don't get parallel lines on the workpiece. Our previous experience had shown that sanding along the grain leaves lines, which need to sort out with orbital sanding: that problem has now disappeared. The Kündig definitely improves the quality of the finished surface.” The sander Cubby selected has two heads and a working width of 1,350 mm. It has been configured for lacquer sanding, although, as Mariusz explained, “We haven't tried high gloss yet, but we use a lot of the 240 and 320 grit for fine sanding, and the process works well. “We are very happy with the finish. We have

had the sander for almost nine months, and we haven’t had any complaints from the joiners on the shop floor as the Kündig does what it says it can do. “The sander is used for everything. We specialise in bespoke joinery and furniture, so use it for a variety of applications: yesterday we were sanding windows, tomorrow it will be sanding doors and possibly denibbing lacquer, Monday it will be doing kitchen doors. The Kündig sander is a multi task machine, and that is why Cubby has chosen it.” Asked if Cubby would recommend the sander, Mariusz replied, “Highly”. The Brilliant is the mid-range Kündig widebelt sander. It can be supplied in a variety of configurations. Kündig sanders are manufactured to the highest standards within Europe, and new sanders come fitted as standard with an energy saving mode: if no workpiece has been sanded for a given period of time, the energy saving function kicks in. The company estimates that this can save a workshop about 10-15% of the electricity that would otherwise have been used. SterlingOSB Sitecoat For EasyTo-Brand Site Hoarding In today’s brand-heavy world, contractors use site hoardings as advertising or branding billboards to project the best possible public image; Norbord’s SterlingOSB SiteCoat has been designed for this specific application. “Bare” SterlingOSB has long been the preferred material for hoarding. Now, Norbord offers SterlingOSB SiteCoat which is factory-coated; the surface is filled, smoothed and primed on one side to make it ready for painting or applying graphics. The primer comes in a choice of colours, and adds a smarter and more professional finish to building sites. SterlingOSB SiteCoat, which is easily fixed using standard woodworking

methods, is made from square-edged, moisture resistant SterlingOSB3 with a non-solvent coating applied. Like all Norbord OSB products, SterlingOSB SiteCoat is strong, durable and easy to cut and fix. More durable than untreated plywood, SiteCoat is also more environmentally-friendly since it is UKmade from homegrown wood fibre and has to travel far fewer miles from factory to site than imported ply.

Fast Drying For Wood Finishes Recently launched by the specialist heat company, Victory, the Heatlight Fast Bake Oven utilises infrared heat for fast drying of paint or other coatings on wood or metal. Finishes can be dried in minutes which previously would have taken hours to air dry, the company says. “We have developed infrared heat products for a lot of industrial processes,” says Alan Penman, Victory’s MD,” We saw that we could put this experience to use in the furniture industry as we realised that often manufacturers have to wait for finishes to dry before they can carry on working. They needed a way to quickly dry finishes on products such as furniture panels, doors and window frames. Our technology was the perfect answer.” The system comprises a drying cabinet equipped with four infrared cassettes. The cabinet has been designed to accommodate a mobile racking unit, so it

20 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

can be located well away from the spraying or painting area. The racking can be loaded with painted product and then simply wheeled away, into the drying cabinet. Alan explains that another benefit of the system is reduction of dust problems. “The drying process is fast and doesn’t involve any air movements and is of course in an enclosed cabinet, so dust problems are largely eliminated”, he says. “In fact, the whole workflow is improved and manufacturers can work more efficiently and increase productivity.” Supplied in flat pack format with easyto-follow assembly instructions, the Fast Bake Oven is supplied with 4 x 1500W cassettes — each mountable in three height positions. The cassettes are fully dimmable, so heat can be controlled to suit individual jobs. Optional controllers are also available on request.

The Heatlight Fast Bake Oven quickly dries paint and other finishes.

The system can be customised to suit the customers’ requirements.

Poplar – A Natural Choice Members of the woodworking and Interior Design press were invited to the Garnica Plywood production facilities in Rioja Spain. On the trip was Scott Brady, UK Manager representing Garnica in the UK and Miles Kember Depot Director of James Latham plc, Thurrock. (James Latham plc are sole distributors of Garnica Plywood Group in the UK and Ireland). The company was established back in 1941 as a sawmill and in 1973 the company Madera Garnica was formed and the plywood factory was inaugurated in Banos de Rio Tobia in La Rioja, Spain. Garnica have pioneered and explored new ways to manage and use natural resources wisely and to manufacture exceptional plywood solutions to suit the needs of customers worldwide. Garnica manufacture in six factories, four in Spain and one in France, producing 300,000m3 with sales of 200 million euros, selling to over 600 customers in 40 countries (93% export). Their main export markets are Germany, France, UK, Netherlands, South America and the USA. The plywood is made from poplar trees, Garnica own more than three million sqm of plantations which are carefully maintained, as pruning is essential, poplars grow extremely fast and can reach a height of 40 metres. The saplings are cloned and grown in plant nurseries until ready for planting which results in very solid wood with excellent yield. They are deep-planted every 5-6 metres apart and are situated close to rivers and and/or raised water table levels. Poplars grow four times faster than other coniferous and tropical species and have a high resistance to natural decay and are robust

and ideal for long lasting sustainable plywood solutions for different applications. Poplars are one of the most sustainable species of tress and its lumber is a replacement for tropical species. Forest management technicians trim/prune to two thirds of the trees branches allowing the poplar to keep its shape, they also check for any infestation. When they reach 16 years old they are really for cutting. The high quality plywood is produced for both interior and exterior use for demanding applications – poplar provides lightness, stability, surface quality and ease of machining. There are six factories within the group – the headquarters in Logrono (La Rioja), Banos del Rio Tobia 1 (La Rioja), Banos del Rio II (La Riogna), Fuenmajor (La Rioja), Valencia de Don Juan (Leon) and Samazan (Southern France). One factory alone requires 2,000 trees per day for processing. In 2010 Garnica invested 30 million euros in expanding and developing the factory in Banos de Rio Tobia and creating a new plant in Samazan in Southern France. James Latham plc will stock five of their products for sale in the UK and Ireland – the plywood covers a broad variety of applications in everyday life such as construction, decoration, and furniture including special fitted requirements in caravan and yachting applications. Garnica’s product range from 3mm to 50mm thickness consists of lightness, stability, surface quality made possible by the use of the poplar core with a variety of finishes at highly competitive prices. Duroply – modified, durable with innovative treatment allowing exceptional durability – immune to attacks of fungi and insects even in outdoor uses and demanding climate conditions, outperforming any marine ply produced from the Far East. On the engineered wood production Fireshield, fire rated modified plywood is certified even after sanding and machining, ideal for building/construction, marine and train use. Specialities like lightweight are sued in the manufacture and fitting out of caravans, luxury yachts, furniture, fire panels and decorative products. The panels can also be customised for customer requests. Structural sandwich panels offer both insulation and high performance. The excellent mechanical properties and decorative finishes of the plywood panel are combined with insulating materials such as extruded polystyrene or wood fibre. These give resistance, durability and sustainability than most other panels on the market. Garnica offer a wide range of finishes applicable to their panel, modified panel and specialities – UV

Finish, High Pressure Laminate, Medium Density Overlay, Prime, Extruded Polystyrene, Cork, Continuous Pressure Laminate. Garnica also provide added value with a finishing service and will soon be investing in CNC machinery for drilling and routing procedures.

PROFILE

AXYZ router takes centre stage at the RSC Following installation of an AXYZ 6010 CNC router in February of this year, the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratfordupon-Avon is said to have achieved considerable savings in production time and on outsourcing costs. The RSC is the foremost British theatre company, employing a staff of over 1,000 and responsible for around 20 productions a year, all of which require a variety of sophisticated scenic constructions that hitherto were crafted by hand. Head of Scenic Resources at the RSC, Rebecca Cubitt commented: “Having been impressed by the performance and reliability of the AXYZ 6010 CNC router installed at other scenic workshops, coupled with the quality of the on-site operator training provided by AXYZ International’s technical engineers, it was decided to purchase the same machine for the RSC carpentry department. This has enabled us to bring in-house all of our routing and cutting requirements and removed the previous need to use outside suppliers for the more intricate stage set and scenic designs required for RSC’s many and varied productions.” The AXYZ router is employed primarily to process plywood and polycarbonate sheets used to create the floors of the stage sets and for making components that are built into other scenic elements. Installation of the router has, according to Rebecca Cubitt, also helped resolve issues on manual handling and employee safety. She added: “In the past, it was necessary to hand-cut or use a wall-mounted panel saw to cut shaped floor panels and this proved very time consuming as well as presenting handling problems for staff when lifting heavy sheets of polycarbonate onto the saw.” Rebecca Cubitt continued: “Since installation, the router has been working non-stop, enabling a much faster turnaround on work to better accommodate critical deadlines on the various RSC

productions. Typical applications for the AXYZ 6010 machine have included a new stage set for RSC’s outdoor theatre the Dell and for cutting and profiling polycarbonate sheets used in a stage set for a recent production of ‘The Tempest’. The router was also employed to create the floor, senate steps and colonnades used in the current ‘Rome’ season, as well as providing stage sets for the new play, ‘Vice Versa’, presented in the RSC’s Swan Theatre.” The AXYZ 6010 router installed at the RSC scenic workshop has a processing area of 2159mm (width) x 3048mm (length). It also incorporates a seven-station AXYZ ATC (Automatic Tool Change) facility to accommodate multiple tooling requirements. Rebecca Cubitt continued: “As this was the first CNC machine installed in the carpentry department, it was a matter of choosing a router which was easy to operate and trustworthy and which would enable employees to learn how to use quickly and integrate into their working practices.” As with all AXYZ routers, however, the AXYZ 6010 machine can be supplied with a host of optional production tool

enhancements. These include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/cutting process and the A2MC machine controller with integrated AXYZ Vision System (AVS) for optimum accuracy and quality of cut. These are supplemented with the latest helical rack and pinion drive system. This features a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to faster throughput times, reduced material wastage, quieter operation and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. In conclusion, Rebecca Cubitt commented: “In addition to the performance and reliability of the AXYZ 6010 router, I was pleased with the on-site operator training provided by AXYZ International and to the support demonstrated throughout the entire installation process.”

Another Big Pluss For Daltons Wadkin And Salvador Second Salvador Crosscut for Pluss Organisation Having already benefitted from one programmable optimising and defecting crosscut saw, Pluss have invested in a second Salvador, this time a SuperAngle 600 with drilling head for bed frame component manufacturing. Over the past 45 years Pluss has helped thousands of people with disabilities and other disadvantages move into employment. The award winning Social Enterprise has a turnover of over £19 million and is recognised as one of the leading national disability employment specialists in the UK. The woodworking arm of the company, based in Barnstaple, produces high quality bed frames and components for luxury bed manufacturer ViSpring. The Salvador SuperAngle 600 crosscut joins the existing SuperPush 200, reducing processing times and freeing up a bottle neck in production. Machine technician for Pluss, Kevin Williams, was involved in both Salvador installations. ‘Our old processes were very labour intensive and offered no chance of optimising the material. That, coupled with a second drilling process meant that production of key components was slow, inaccurate and inefficient. I already knew the potential savings in waste a Salvador could bring. The SuperAngle 600 with drilling has now taken over from two separate machines. It’s only been installed for a few weeks but we are already matching our initial target of 2500 finished components per week with plenty of capacity to spare. Crucially material wastage

has been reduced from nearly 30% down to around 10%’. New for 2017, the Salvador SuperAngle crosscut saw is now available with a drilling head that can perform boring and counter sinking operations in combination with straight and angled crosscutting. Combining these two, traditionally separate processes into one operation increases efficiency with huge savings in labour, reduced material wastage and machining time while guaranteeing accuracy. The five spindle drilling unit is controlled through Salvador’s new software. A simple and intuitive operator interface allows the machine to operate in one of four modes; full cutting list optimisation with or without defecting, fixed cutting, sequential fixed cutting and cut to mark. The powerful optimisation software is continually scanning the infeed material, considering material length, head and tail angle and any defects in order to reduce waste and maximise yield. Another advantage of the new software is the addition of three new ‘intelligent’ functions providing valuable operator and management data. S-Money generates statistical information and manufacturing costs, reporting on the overall productivity of the machine, separate cutting lists, individual operators or different types of material. S-Help provides the operator with real time machine diagnosis with infographics accompanying error message. SExcel allows cutting lists to be programmed

remotely, away from the machine, taking data from third party production management software or simply from an Excel spreadsheet. David Jenkins, Enterprise Manager at Pluss, has been working Daltons Wadkin Sales Director Andy Walsh on the Salvador project. ‘The whole process has gone very well’, comments David. ‘Our company was made to feel special with the service received when investigating the machine. The Salvador met all of our requirements, the installation team were professional and dealt with all of our questions. Since then we have received regular communication to check on our progress and have arranged for an annual service contract with Daltons Wadkin. The machine is very safe, robust, accurate and delivers the production efficiency we as a company wanted to achieve. Its ease of use allows us to meet our vision which is to allow “people of all abilities to be inspired to achieve a career”. We are now in discussions with Daltons Wadkin for other machines based upon the service, reliability and functionality of delivering this project.’ The SuperAngle 600 and SuperPush 200 can be seen operating alongside other equipment at the Daltons Wadkin in-house Wood & Panel Machinery Show, from the 3rd to 5th October in Nottingham.

Trifibre’s “Jigsaw” Nests In Alphacam Aid Bottom Line It was an open and shut case when Leicester-based Trifibre were looking for CAD/CAM software to drive their new CNC router. They chose Alphacam. And now, around five years later, it programs their Biesse Rover, a Morbidelli, and their original small Pacer. Established in 1981, Trifibre Ltd has grown into the UK’s leading case producer, providing innovative casing design and manufacturing solutions to a wide range of industry sectors including aerospace, surgical and medical, motorsport and automotive, and clothing. Sales Manager Trishanth Parari says they specialise in working with major blue chip organisations, manufacturing flight cases that meet military specifications, bespoke polyprop cases, complex bespoke metal containers, made to measure metal fabrications, wooden packing crates, and

34 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

custom made wooden and plastic presentation cases. Trifibre invested in Alphacam when they purchased the Morbidelli to supplement the Pacer. “Previously, everything was routed manually. We simply added tool paths to the DXF files,” he says. “However, as the company grew we needed to reduce our labour time in producing drawings and preparing the machines. “The shop floor workers were physically routing the panels every day, and it was becoming increasingly inefficient to machine the foam inserts on the single head Pacer, so we brought in the Morbidelli which was a pod and rail system, and we converted half the bed into a flat bed. As it’s a twin-head machine we’re able to run it in tandem, programmed with Alphacam.” And Project Manager Martin Clarke says the next natural step was to further expand

their CNC suite. “Moving from the single head Pacer to the twin head Morbidelli improved efficiency in terms of speed and accuracy in cutting the inserts, and they were passing through the factory faster than the panels. So we decided to purchase the Biesse Rover for routing the panels.” Alphacam is involved in almost everything he does: “Everything that’s machined, every hole, every pocket – the more time we invest upfront turns into savings of minutes and hours. What one person does with Alphacam in the office saves time for 20 people on the shop floor.” He says once a prototype is approved, programming all three machines with Alphacam enables them to produce the same product quickly and efficiently every time. They use specific software for designing their flight cases, and the DXF file containing all the panel sizes, handle

cut-outs and catch holes, is imported into Alphacam for the toolpaths to be added. “This goes to the shop floor where the CNC machine operators create the nests getting the most efficient yield from every sheet…even where we’re producing oneoffs. For example, we can create a jigsaw of 20 one-off cases on the same nest. A oneoff flight case may only need a quarter or half sheet of Hexaboard plywood, but prior to using Alphacam we might have to use a full sheet. “Waste is expensive, but Alphacam creates what is essentially a jigsaw puzzle for routing, compared to the straight cut saw and beam saw where you’d have to go right through a panel. On our widely used materials, such as Hexaboard, the yield is well up around 90 per cent, so this represents considerable savings. Alphacam improves yield, and yield becomes profit margin, so Alphacam is directly contributing to our bottom line and profitability.” It also saves considerable time, which,

again, improves efficiency and profitability. “It varies from job to job, but the bare minimum is hours down to minutes. And

when we’re machining high production runs of the same case with a number of intricate routes, it can save us days.” Trishanth Parari says another aspect of Alphacam which plays a vital part in their production is simulation. “We’re able to see what the end product is going to look like before we start to cut the material. It’s also important to ensure that there aren’t going to be any collisions during the manufacturing process.” And he says having one software package to drive the routers from all three machine tool manufacturers makes their working lives considerably easier. “With Alphacam we have post processors set up for each CNC machine, so we can simply send the program to the shop floor knowing it will be absolutely right.” In conclusion, he says Alphacam means they can offer a maximum turnaround time of 14 working days on all orders – whether it’s for one case, or 100.

SOFTWARE Cabinet Vision Technology Aids Fri Projects’ Expansion Converting prospects into sales with Cabinet Vision’s powerful photo-rendering, has helped a bespoke joinery specialist to expand into new premises, almost triple the size of its old workshop. Fri Projects has recently moved from 6,800 square foot premises into an 18,000 square foot factory on the edge of Birmingham. Working mainly for principal contractors since setting up the business in 2013, owner Mark Jeffries says the last couple of years has seen them provide interiors for 56 BP garages, 25 Chiquito restaurants and a number of Frankie and Benny’s, along with their principal end-user, the award-winning Nandos chain. And with Cabinet Vision’s Screen-ToMachine module sending NC code from the design files to their two Felder Format-4

profit HO8 routers, most jobs are being completed five times faster, which means they can take on more independent work now, knowing that quick turn-around times can be met. Having served an apprenticeship with one of the oldest shopfitting companies in the country – Edmond Shopfitters, which was formed nearly 150 years ago in 1870, where he worked on projects at Windsor Castle, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the British Library – he went on to become a shopfitter travelling all over the country. Fri Projects was formed when he met Charlotte, who is now his wife. “I wanted to spend more time at home, get married and start a family. We couldn’t do that with the hours I was keeping out of town.” He set up

a small workshop, before eventually incorporating Fri Projects – on a Friday. Hence the name. Working with a range of materials, including panel products, Corian solid surfaces and solid timber, everything is designed in Cabinet Vision, and goes through the 3-axis flat bed matrix Felders, with NC code created in Screen-To-Machine. “Even something as simple as a straightforward hole is done on the machine tool,” explains Mark Jeffries. “If we did it manually we’d need to measure it, mark it, and then cut it out. But with Cabinet Vision it’s so much quicker, and we know that the precision will be perfect every time.” The company’s reputation was built on its two watch-words: speed and efficiency. “It’s vital that all our components are completely

SOFTWARE accurate so they fit together on site. We always know that’s the case, because we’re firm believers that technology is the way forward.” He invested in a Chinese CNC router within the first few months of starting the company, which he says served as a good introduction, but wanted to automate even further. “I spent six months researching CNC machines and CAD/CAM software, and realised that the Felders and Cabinet Vision were perfect to take the business to the next level, which is based on bespoke projects.” Cabinet Vision has been instrumental in successfully meeting two design and manufacturing challenges. “Before we even win a job, the software’s photo-rendering functionality is proving invaluable in converting the prospect to a sale. It means the customers can visualise exactly what the finished product will look like.” And, secondly, Cabinet Vision overcomes the challenge faced through skilled bench joiners becoming few and far between. “I realised if I could have a machine cutting components perfectly, I didn’t need a highly skilled joiner to assemble them because they all fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. It means we can take young lads on, and within around three weeks we can have them putting units together, which I couldn’t have done in my apprenticeship in those days without CNC and CAD/CAM.” He cites an example of how Cabinet

Cabinet Vision’s screen-to-machine module sends NC code from the design files to their Felder Format-4 Profit HO8 routers

Vision’s design and manufacturing functionalities integrated seamlessly on a particular project. “We started with the customer’s sketch for a cabinet, which I then set up on Cabinet Vision, including the materials he wanted, along with cable management and doors. Then I created the drawing and an elevation. Once it was signed off it went into production, with NC code generated in Screen-To-Machine. This

saved around 60 per cent of time on design, pricing, producing the cutlist, and generating the NC code.” And Cabinet Vision means they can take on particularly complex work that they say many woodworking companies would struggle to achieve; for example, the Nandos logo. “With Cabinet Vision we simply import a dxf file, and draw our complete design in 3D and add the toolpaths through Screen-To-Machine at the same time. Previously we’d have had to draw it in 2D and add the toolpaths separately. But now we do it all seamlessly in one operation. Which is vital for the work we do for our staple end-user, Nandos.” Manufacturing kitchen furniture for camper vans completes the company’s portfolio, and Mark Jeffries says Cabinet Vision’s parametric capability is vital to ensure complete accuracy every time. “Plywood board isn’t always an absolute uniform thickness, so we’ve created our designs completely parametrically. We measure the boards, and then change the material thickness if it’s necessary, which automatically changes everything else, and how it’s cut. This means our camper van kitchens are always perfect.” For further information: Fri Projects: www.friprojects.co.uk Cabinet Vision: www.cabinetvision.com

SOFTWARE Alphacam “Provides The Line Of Least Resistance” For Solid Timber Specialist, Woodbase Joiners The combination of Alphacam’s parametric function and its ability to drive 5-axis routers is the way forward for a company focusing on high end solid timber joinery. Woodbase Joiners specialise in bespoke doors, windows and staircases, along with skirting boards, architraves, mouldings and brackets, mainly for domestic customers and builders. The company, which operates from a 7,500 square foot factory and a 900 square foot unit on the same business park near the East Sussex coast, installed Alphacam Standard in 2016, but upgraded to the Ultimate package shortly afterwards. Managing Director Simon Bartlett explains: “We’d always intended to upgrade once we’d got to grips with the basic package. But we unexpectedly had the chance to employ a draughtsman/programmer who has worked with Alphacam for 15 years, and when he joined us he was frustrated that the Standard module couldn’t do what he wanted. So we accelerated our investment with Ultimate.” That someone was Stuart Betts, who Simon Bartlett says has now got their 5-axis Maka PE 70 router, with 6-metre x 1.4metre working area, “flying like it should be,” through Alphacam Ultimate. “My main prompt to go with Ultimate immediately, was when we needed to produce a large curved component,” Simon Bartlett says. “Although we did it on the router, without the benefit of 5-axis programming it was a longwinded process.” Alphacam is now used on many projects, and while they have a separate specialist software for general staircase work, Alphacam is becoming increasingly useful for handrails and other complex aspects of staircases. “Although we do use conventional machines for some things, since installing Ultimate we’re increasingly

38 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

cutting more and more components on the router, for the time saving, precision and repeatability that it offers.” And he says it is reassuring, both for Woodbase and their customers, that the products coming off the CNC machine tool will always be exactly as they’re drawn. “It eliminates the potential for human error, and means that if a customer wants more of a particular component in the future, we can simply run the program again.” He describes Alphacam as providing the line of least resistance. “People always do things the easiest way they can, so if it’s easier for us to draw a component in Alphacam and run it on the router, we will. Even if it’s a one-off which we may have previously done on the spindle moulder, we’ll now do it with Alphacam.” That point is echoed by Stuart Betts, who says 5-axis machining and parametricallycreated components are the way forward for Woodbase Joiners. One of his first tasks on arriving at the company was to set about establishing a full parametric door library in Alphacam, as well as all their hardware items such as butts, multi-point door lock components and weatherseals. With Alphacam’s Parametric Sketcher,

common CAD geometry is created automatically, regenerating the file with any required variables, meaning there is no need to redraw similar components. They are built using standard geometry commands, with different sizes being created by simply modifying the values of one or more variables. “The parametric function is an absolute godsend, as we don’t have to draw the component every time. We simply pull out a door that is similar to the one we want to create, put in the sizes and drag and drop all the ironmongery, then send it to the CNC router.” And he is now creating door rails, door styles, box frame windows and joinery components in the parametric library. “Once we’ve created a parametric program for any joinery item it’s so quick and easy to produce new components. Everything is simply driven from a measurement.” Appropriate parametric programs for new projects are pulled from the library, or created from scratch on the rare occasion there is nothing with a close reference to what they need. “Even Z-axis curved work is no problem – parametric programming speeds up the process and means we can

Doors and windows manufactured by Woodbase Joiners and designed with the use of Alphacam

produce exactly what we want with no constraints.” He says upgrading to Alphacam Ultimate is really pushing Woodbase forward. “Standard was perfect for our 2D and 3D work, but we couldn’t do shaped or wreath handrails, for instance. Ultimate supports

full 4- and 5-axis simultaneous machining for our high specification joinery. I use suction pods on the machine as well as pneumatic clamps and a laser positioning system, which Alphacam reads easily to speed up placement of workpieces.” The final word goes to Simon Bartlett,

who says they’re taking on work they would not have considered previously, because Alphacam now makes it cost effective. This includes gaining Fire Door Adjuster certification. “The increasing complexity of fire door components means it’s not simply a case of making apertures and cut-outs. It involves complicated HARDWARE as well, and to program and machine the components in any other way than on a router makes it prohibitively expensive. And we’re also looking at panel processing for fit-out cladding thanks to Alphacam.”

HOMAG’s Woodcad|CAM Software Improves Presentation And Drives Automation For Contract Furnishing Manufacturers There was a time, in the not too distant past, when the contract furniture industry seemed to be somewhat of a gravy train. The demand, by corporate and government clients, for acres of cubicle and panel systems provided good margin work for large and small manufacturers alike. That time has past and now, to be successful in this ultra-competitive market, producers have to ensure that every element of their businesses is run efficiently and professionally. To achieve this, contract furniture manufacturers are investing in advanced woodworking machinery that can be automated and linked together in production cells that deliver efficient, high quality production. The control of this advanced machinery is handled by specifically developed software that performs a multitude of tasks for their businesses quickly, accurately and consistently. Global market leader, HOMAG, is at the forefront of development for this software with its wood CAD|CAM product. This software enables manufacturers to do everything from detailed 3D room planning for quotations to parametric design, drawing output, part lists and automatic CNC programming. “HOMAG’s wood CAD|CAM software has given a more professional edge to our business,” claims Andrew Duncombe, a director at Leicestershire based Wreake Valley Craftsmen. He continues, “We’ve been in business since 1951 and are committed to combining traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods. “Our mantra has always been to invest in the best machinery and systems available; as a consequence, we have been a customer of HOMAG UK’s for many years. With the increasing competitiveness of the contract

Parametric design with 3D rendering allows users to easily view and amend designs

furniture market, we recognised the need to invest in software that would not only help us automate our processes, but also provide us with a more professional presentation capability.”

Making the right choice “Clearly, we had to make the right choice for the business as this software was going to become the foundation for the design and manufacturing processes within the company for the foreseeable future. As part of our due diligence, we evaluated the leading solutions in the market before deciding on HOMAG’s wood CAD|CAM software. “There were two key reasons we selected HOMAG’s solution. Firstly, with woodCAD|CAM the drawing and programming of the machines is integrated, unlike the competition where they are two separate processes. Secondly, we knew that the HOMAG software had been developed in conjunction with HOMAG machinery and therefore the compatibility was guaranteed. That was really important to us, because we didn’t

want a situation where one supplier was blaming the other for any issue that might arise.”

Streamlining processes “The software has enabled us to streamline our processes and increase our capacity whilst maintaining the high quality standards of finish and service we demand. The 3D rendering of products has enabled us to create a much improved standard of presentation drawings for clients. Instead of the old 2D drawings, these 3D renderings not only make it easy for them to see exactly what they will be getting, but they also facilitate changes to be made quickly and easily, providing clarity and eliminating potential miss-understandings. “As part of the investment in the software we took on a graduate who, whilst having little experience in cabinet-making, is an expert in CAD|CAM software. He has found the HOMAG software to be intuitive and easy to get to grips with. He was also impressed with the training he undertook both at HOMAG and here on site,” concludes Andrew Duncombe.

SOFTWARE Whiteleaf Furniture converts to HOMAG Based in Thame in Oxfordshire, Whiteleaf Furniture was founded in 1870 and has become one of the leading contract furniture specialists in the country. The company is committed to exceptional customer service and delivers the highest level of customer satisfaction. The company first bought machinery from HOMAG in the early 1990s. Its plant list now includes two edgebanders, three BHX 050 drilling and routing CNCs and a HOMAG BMG CNC, plus another BMG already on order. In early 2016, the decision to invest in four of the machines at the same time was made. This decision was driven primarily by the choice of software. Neil Thompson, production director at Whiteleaf Furniture takes up the story, “These days there is such a wide choice of machinery available for businesses like us and all will do a job, however, it was the build quality and most importantly the software that made us commit to HOMAG machines.”

HOMAG woodCAD|CAM and e-solutions “We looked at various software solutions from the other main CNC suppliers, however, the HOMAG woodCAD|CAM and e-solutions package stood head and

shoulders above the rest. It was by far the easiest to use and the demonstration by Chris was excellent, easy to understand and very comprehensive. “It was clear that with a minimum of training we would be up and running within three months and the addition of esolutions meant we would be able to programme everything from the office straight onto all the machines. “With e-solutions, we can design full kitchens, do costings for estimating, optimise board usage and programme the machines. In short, you can pretty much run your whole factory if you’ve got esolutions. “The software does everything we want. It alone has increased our productivity by at least 10% because it gives us the versatility of programming single bespoke items and large batches with ease. “Our main business is manufacturing student accommodation and we might, for example, have to produce one reception desk and 400 or 500 studio fit-outs; the HOMAG software allows us to do this, whereas it would appear that none of the other software packages available would.”

Parametric design drives efficiencies “When you design a cabinet using esolutions you can set certain parameters. So let’s say you’re making a cabinet that’s one

metre tall, so it will have two hinges for the door. Anything from one metre to two metres might have three hinges and anything over two metres will have four hinges. “The when you draw a cabinet, it works to these parameters and actually draws the hinges complete with the drilling positions for them. If you’re putting shelves in it, it adds all the drilling for the shelves. So basically, we draw a cabinet, and the software marks out exactly where all the fittings have to go. “If we put extra shelves in it will highlight any potential snags, for example, if the shelves are going to interfere with any hinges. This enables you to adjust the design accordingly. So, once you’ve set your parameters, you can design your products and it works out where everything goes for you. Then, you just send it to all the machines and they’re automatically programmed to do the necessary drilling.”

Customer confidence “Since we’ve had the HOMAG equipment and software installed, we have been able to bring clients to the factory to prove to them what we can do. Within half an hour, what they have seen gives them the confidence to believe that what we say we can deliver, we definitely will deliver. “We can say to them, sit here with our designer and create a cabinet you’d like in your project. Then, by the time we’ve finished the factory tour with them, we can show them the cabinet they designed as a finished product – it is very impressive,” concludes a very happy Neil Thompson. INSTALLATION Maton Rose Blooms With CEHISA Edgebander From Daltons Wadkin A new CEHISA Pro-12 edgebander from Daltons Wadkin has enabled Maton Rose Interiors to increase productivity and improve edge quality. Having operated a CEHISA EP-11 for some 15 years, the Northamptonshire manufacturer had no hesitation in looking to CEHISA again for a new replacement. Operating from two main factories in Wellingborough, the company pride themselves in being able to offer an extensive range of services including space design, bespoke furniture making, upholstery and window fittings all manufactured and installed by a dedicated team of craftsmen. As a relatively large panel processor, Maton Rose Interiors has built a reputation for offering tailor made bespoke installations with short lead times. Edgebanding is key to production workflow and is often required to work up to 8 hours a day. Performance and finish quality are key. Daltons Wadkin are the main distributors for CEHISA edgebanders in Great Britain. ‘The CEHISA Pro is proving a very popular model with larger sized panel producers’, comments Alex Dalton, director of Daltons Wadkin. ‘The Pro-12 model especially, with pre-milling, twin motor corner round unit and feed speeds up to 14 m/min. Large tracer wheels allow high gloss edging to be processed complete with top and bottom radius scrapers, glue scrapers and buffing unit’. Installed at the start of 2017, Maton Rose

Interiors has had a chance to put the machine through its paces. Owner, Rob Errington , is pleased with the performance to date. ‘While our old machine had corner rounding, the biggest advantage with the Pro-12 for us is the pre-milling’, comments Rob. ‘We are sizing our panels on a beam saw so edge quality is not always perfect. The pre-milling gives us guaranteed, quality consistency. The finished product coming off the machine is now perfect which has eliminated any post finishing by hand, and reduced fitting time onsite.’ CEHISA are a dedicated edgebander manufacturer producing over 1000 machines a year. The Pro forms part of an extensive range of machines including the Flexy,

Compact and flag ship Avant which are aimed at small to medium sized panel producers. Each model within the CEHISA range can be customised with pre-milling and corner rounding available from the entry level Flexy model upwards. Set up is quick and simple for even novice operators with well spaced operating units. For regular switching between tape thicknesses automatic setting is available. Controlled from the intuitive touch screen control (standard on all models) the operator can recall saved programs for automatic instant set ups. Daltons Wadkin offers specialist delivery, positioning, installation and training services with all edgebander sales. Alex is keen to emphasise the value of these services. ‘Our team of factory trained engineers take great pride in ensuring that each installation is completed to the highest standard. Whether a novice user or experienced operator our team will ensure you get the most from your investment. And of course, our regionally based service engineers are on hand for the duration of the machines life for on-going servicing and maintenance support’.

DUST EXTRACTION

DCS Eminence Saves Cardinal Energy Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has installed a complete extraction system for fit-out specialist, Cardinal Group, at the company’s newly refurbished manufacturing base in Laisterdyke, Bradford. Cardinal has family business origins dating back over a century, and is now a thriving company with a workforce steadily approaching 200 in number. With its core business in the retail sector, Cardinal has earned a prestigious client list of top high street names, but re-locating its manufacturing facility and headquarters, along with investments in new plant and machinery, is providing opportunities to develop into new markets. Dust Control Systems has looked after the company’s dust extraction requirements for over 20 years, and sales director Melvyn Bathgate, commenting on the contract to supply and install extraction plant at the new premises, said: “In our business it’s not often we have such a blank canvas to work with – Cardinal now have around 120,000 sq ft of manufacturing space and, being involved from the start, we were able to offer some guidance on workshop layout and machine positioning to ensure

maximum efficiency from the extraction system design.” The overall layout of the manufacturing areas is extremely neat, providing a natural workflow and generous space for queuing jobs and movement of product between different machining operations. As is the case for most fit-out companies, Cardinal manufactures a tremendous

variety of products, utilising a multiplicity of machines; from classic spindle moulders and band saws, through to modern hightech CNC machining centres. This diverse production requirement means that many machines are often used for short periods of time, and at irregular intervals. In a traditional workshop environment, the extraction system operates at full power, throughout the manufacturing day, even if some machines are idle but, at Cardinal, DCS have installed an energy-saving Ecogate® extraction system. With Ecogate®, optimum extraction is automatically provided, for every individual production machine, but only when machines are being used. DCS have installed FastClip ductwork throughout the factory and the ducting to each machine incorporates a motorised Ecogate® damper which is activated when the machine comes online. The dampers open to allow extraction, and then close automatically when machines are powered down – the Ecogate® system continuously adjusts extraction fan speed, in real time, to match machine usage. “The potential for power saving is obvious”, says Melvyn Bathgate. “Installing an Ecogate® system can achieve an average power saving of over 60% when compared to a system with fans

running all day at fixed speed.” Cardinal’s system is controlled by two Ecogate® greenBOX 12 units, with each greenBOX capable of autonomously controlling extraction for up to 12 different machines – DCS engineers conservatively estimate that energy bills will be 50% lower than they would have been with a fixed speed system. Providing filtration for all the production machines is an ATEX-certified, Schuko ECOVAR VALIDUS modular chain filter,

with an air volume capacity of 47,000m3/hr provided by a flow-optimised cascade system of three 22kW fans. Dustladen air extracted from the factory is drawn through anti-static, polyester needlefelt tubular filter bags – dust is continuously removed from the filter media by pulsed jets of compressed air, and a pneumatic-mechanical shaking system provides secondary cleaning. The waste dust falls into the lower hopper section of

the unit where the chain conveyor maintains a consistent flow of waste to be discharged, pressure-free, by means of a rotary valve. A waste transfer fan finally delivers the material to an enclosed container. The installation also includes two ATEXapproved CARZ back-pressure flap valves; one in each of the two main ducts. In the unlikely event of a dust explosion, the valves prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling from the filter, back along ductwork, and into the factory. DCS have also provided additional fire safety monitoring and protection at Cardinal with the installation of a BS&B spark suppression system.

DUST EXTRACTION Dust Extraction Has To Be Top Priority For The Trade Jay Hounsell, a Herts-based carpenter and business owner, explains why he believes dust extraction should be the number one priority for everyone in the trade. He says: “I’ve been working in the carpentry industry for 20-odd years. My new company – The Hertfordshire Kitchen Company – has been going for two years and is successfully placing itself in the market for the supply and installation of quality domestic kitchens in Herts and the surrounding areas. “Working in an environment with dust extraction has massively changed my working practices. I have a lot of Festool kit as its tools and dust extractors work together really well. My work means I’m continually using routers, drills and circular saws with extractors – it makes the working environment more comfortable, cleaner and safer. Jay says that the health benefits have to be the number one reason for using Festool kit. He says: “I’ve been lucky to never have

suffered from asthma or other breathing problems. I believe this is partly attributable to the use of my Festool dust extractors and their excellent integration with their tools. After years of working in carpentry I’m aware of the risks of working without a dust extractor and now use one whenever the tools allow. Kitchen fitting is indoor work so it’s a ‘must’ as it’s not always practical or possible to do all the cutting outside. “Dust extraction needs to be a top priority for people in the trade. I have two L Class extractors and, since we’ve developed our work with solid surface worktops that produce finer dust, I also have an M Class system now too. I use each one depending on the job. The ‘system’ is what I like about Festool, the systainers enable easy organisation and all stack on top of each other which makes the mobility of kit when

you’re on the job so much easier.” Festool, the leading supplier of high-end power tools and accessories, including a range of dust extractors, has been speaking with business owners as part of its latest Breathe Easy campaign. Perfect for mobile use and assembly, the Festool range of safe and robust dust extractors are lightweight and compact, ideal to transport from job to job, saving time for tradespeople. Festool’s dust extractors are suitable for any job from low to high class dust, including general work to anything that is a known carcinogen including lead, cadmium and asbestos.

“Wood Waste Heater Is One Of The Best Investments We’ve Ever Made In Our Business.” A shopfitting company is saying goodbye to unnecessary heating and waste disposal bills after buying a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Edge Interiors has offered shopfitting and bespoke cabinet making services for over 15 years from its 7000 sq ft workshop in Leicestershire. Generating a substantial amount of waste wood during manufacture, the business was spending between £200 and £600 a month on skips to dispose of the wood offcuts and other waste, and around £1500 a month on running a gas boiler to keep the workshop warm during the cold months. Hearing about the benefits of purchasing a wood waste heater to reduce waste disposal costs and provide free heating, Managing Director of Edge Interiors, Nigel Barratt searched the internet to find out how such an investment could help the business, and discovered the range of heaters on offer from Wood Waste Technology. Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT15 wood waste heater

48 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

into the factory earlier this year. Nigel Barratt says: “We’re so pleased we found Wood Waste Technology. On the day the wood waste heater was installed the workshop went from freezing cold to beautifully warm, and the team now works in shorts and t-shirts instead of layers of warm clothing. I’m delighted that we no longer have to pay for heating or hire a skip to dispose of our waste wood, and also with the service received from Wood Waste Technology – the purchase of the wood waste heater is definitely one of the best investments we’ve ever made in our business.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “It’s been a pleasure helping Edge Interiors, and, with the money savings on waste disposal and heating bills the company should get payback on its investment in less than 2 years.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and

offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.
