Hoffmann Central to Wealden Success ith extensive experience in the wooden window industry, Nicholas Gamble set up Wealden Wooden Windows in Storrington, West Sussex in 2007. The company supplies made to measure hard and softwood windows of various designs to the residential replacement market, to builders undertaking mid to high value renovations and extensions, and now also to the new build sector. Nicholas Gamble’s experience enabled him to set up a high quality supply of necessary profiles from leading national and European suppliers and had to set up his factory to process these profiles for sashes and main frames so that assembly and window construction of the highest quality could be achieved. In order to make the mitre joints on the complex profiles accurate, secure and totally permanent Nicholas Gamble opted for the renowned Hoffmann system of dovetail jointing and approached Hoffmann’s John Galvin to assess Wealden’s requirements in setting up a highly efficient production line. As a result Hoffmann installed an MS35-SF combination machine which is capable of double mitre cutting and drilling the profile in a single clamping and cycle. The profiles are placed against the fence and stops on an extended feed bed and length setting are determined by a Hoffmann digital slide stop. The 45 degree cuts are made and vent holes drilled for the window sashes – particularly for the “tilt ‘n turn” window designs.

W

4

The profile sections prepared on the MS35-SF are then sent to a Hoffmann PP2 machine equipped with a keyway routing head and twin (interchangeable) boring heads which drill the holes for the reinforcing dowels and then the keyway slot for the serrated Hoffmann dovetail key is routed. The interchangeable boring heads are for different profile sections – for instance double rows of dowel holes would be drilled for “tilt ‘n turn” designs. Nicholas Gamble is delighted with the Hoffmann set up in his new factory: This is incredibly versatile system which allows us to set-up and change for different profiles quickly and easily – the training we got from John Galvin was superb.” Once the mitred faces of the profiles are put The Hoffmann PP2 together and the dowels inserted, the Hoffmann dovetail key is inserted in the routed keyway and this pulls the joint together in a strong, permanent and totally accurate joint. “The joints we are achieving with the Hoffmann system are the best I’ve ever experienced” says Nicholas Gamble. With Wealden Wooden Windows’ customer base expanding fast the investment in the Hoffmann machines has given them the assurance of excellent quality, and assured capacity for the future.

Homag doubles capacity at Space-Build ll part of a single order, Homag UK have installed a Holzma HPP30 beam saw and Brandt KDF53 singlesided edgebander at specialist Huddersfield company Space-Build. Space-Build was started in 1996 by Managing Director Steve Bateman to offer a cut and edged board service to various sectors including house builders, shopfitters, bathroom and kitchen manufacturers and also the public. Steve Bateman explains that, as the company steadily expanded their customer base – including into the Scottish house building sector – their original machinery became over-stretched and at the limit of capacity. Careful and intense research of the machinery market resulted in the Homag Group and Homag UK as being identified as the preferred and most proficient supplier. “We were looking for machines that were the best engineered, that would offer us the best flexibility and reliability, and which would allow us to invest for the future growth of Space-Build” says Steve Bateman. “In Homag UK we identified a technical partner that would support and stand by us. Homag UK’s John Shepherd was extremely helpful in directing us in terms of the specification of the machines and the back-up and after sales service that Homag UK could offer was crucial in coming to our decision” he explains. Other factors that clinched the investment were the fact that Homag UK could offer fast delivery and installation as well as training for the Space-Build operators. “The CADmatic controller on the Holzma saw in particular is superb and the lads think it’s fantastic” says Steve Bateman. Dimensional accuracy and a perfect chip-free cut for the edgebander are absolutely crucial to Space-Build’s service and reputation. The Holzma saw is renowned for being able to deliver both of these in the long term. Te accuracy is, in the main, derived from the perfect positioning of the boar over the cut line by the program fence which is on rack and pinion drive and positioned by the controller via contactless magnetic encoder. The board is accurately aligned against the side fence by Holzma’s patented “shark’s fin” side aligner with optimised movements that can reduce cycle times by up to 25%. The perfect cut comes from Holzma’s famous mono-rail saw carriage guidance system that guarantees absolute alignment of the scoring and main blade. All movements are optimised on this advanced Holzma saw so that cycle times are considerably reduced and capacity significantly increased. Once the cut panels are delivered to the Brandt KDF53 edgebander pin-point board edge is ensured by a pre-milling unit and the coiled tape – from 0.4mm melamine up to 2mm PVC – is applied and finished including the final contour trimming with an in-line unit.

A Thank You To Sponsors rnie Hollister, publisher of Panel Production, and his son Tom would like to say a big thank you to COMBILIFT LTD, HOMAG GROUP UK and SCM GROUP UK for their generosity in sponsoring the Saracens U17 rugby squad for their summer tour to South Africa. The squad of 24 players spent two weeks touring South Africa playing some tough matches in Durban and Cape Town. They experienced amazing hospitality from the rugby mad nation and were welcomed wherever they went. The tour was a life changing experience for them; they were fortunate enough to experience a safari, visit Table Mountain, swim with sharks and a more sobering visit to Robbin Island. They played four highly competitive games of rugby and acquitted themselves well inevitably picking up a few injuries on the way but fortunately none that were too serious. Tom, who had the privilege of being Tour Captain, has played with some of the boys since they were 9 years old and this tour was their last together before moving on to the Colts section of the club and then going their separate ways to university and employment. Many years of planning and fund raising went into making sure that the boys had the best tour possible and without the generosity of our sponsors it would not have been possible, so Tom and I would like to say a personal thank you for making it a reality.

äfele has extended its range of structural furniture connectors for hollowcore board with new TAB 18 that also doubles as a shelf support. Tab 18 is the first of a new generation of universal connecting fittings for free standing cabinets and chunky furniture and is initially available for board thicknesses of 30 mm. As a connecting fitting, TAB 18 sets new standards for vertical and horizontal connections that are flush, rigid and strong. It is an extremely economical, design-oriented solution for connecting chunky furniture components and for the use of thicker carcassing and shelves as structural elements. This new plastic connector meets extremely high quality standards - after installation, the tightening screw is hidden behind an integrated, folding cover with a snapon mechanism. The cross slot of the screw is therefore invisible after the connector has been installed. TAB 18 consists of a boss insert for a drill hole diameter of 18 mm and a support part that is secured into the cabinet with one of Häfele’s own-design Varianta screws. The boss insert can be either manually fitted or magazine-fed for automatic insertion. For manual insertion, the boss is simply pushed into a pre-drilled hole in the panel and screwed flush so that the snap spring achieves a high standard of grip for a stronger cabinet. Since the fitting is not firmly seated until the support part has been tightened into position, housings that have not been correctly installed can be easily rotated for adjustment without damaging the drill hole. Once installed, the boss insert fits flush with the surface of the panel and can then be easily tightened down from above. A cross-head screwdriver is the only tooling required for an ultra-positive connection between panel components before the moulded cover is snapped into position. TAB 18 is available in a range of finishes including white, brown, beige, black or nickel-coloured lacquer.

Investment in Increased Production on Hoy, Sales Director of Gannomat explains the benefits of investing in state-of-the-art machinery from Gannomat. Since the inception of Gannomat Direct Sales to the UK and Ireland, Gannomat have been identifying with customers in ways to increase efficiency. So many applications in the industry, such as drilling for hinges and glue insertion, are labour intensive. An example is six operators applying glue by hand with a squeezy applicator can either apply to much glue or not enough so the solution is Gannomat Injekta which applies 35,000 electronically controlled glue shots. As a result, for a relatively small investment labour is reduced and there is zero glue wastage. Another example is drilling holes for hinges and inserting hinges by hand; Gannomats solution is the automatic drilling and insertion of hinges which takes 4 seconds. Many customers such as Carleton Furniture of Pontefract have increased production by 156% by investing in machinery from Gannomat with a pay-back in a matter of months. Jon Hoy says: “Upon our visits to customers we found that although they had made huge investments in state-of-the-art CNC machinery the assembly of carcasses are in fact overloaded with labour intensive methods. By looking at Gannomat Solutions they can reduce their labour costs dramatically and introduce increased efficiency. The costs of the machinery required can be calculated against the labour costs which will effectively pay for the purchases, allowing them to produce much more economically, efficiently and at a faster rate. Gannomat have been very successful with automated machines for the drilling of cabinet doors in a thru-feed system – a finished door – drilled and hinged or hardware inserted, drilled for handles and drawer fronts and handles with drawer clips are inserted in seconds with Gannomat application. Presses for the accurate and precise pressing of cabinets have surpassed all targets. Customers can press all cabinets in the Gannomat Lamella case clamps in a matter of minutes. They automatically process the cabinets on to the final stage assembly reducing a huge amount of labour. These types of systems are available to either short or large batch producers. In the age of bespoke kitchens made just-in-time Gannomat provide solutions for fast accurate production of cabinets to suit all producers large or small. Gannomat MATRIX is a complete cabinet producing point-to-point machine which drills holes on the carcass cables and applies horizontal drilling. MATRIX drills and inserts dowels; hinge areas door handles holes and any hardware, all on one machine which eliminates the function of up to five separate processes. A visit to every customer will identify the application and area required for tailor-made efficient solutions. The customers are then invited to the showrooms for demonstrations of how these methods are achieved manufacturers from the UK prefer this approach as they have direct access to Gannomat Technology and assistance with the particular area of their production they wish to enhance. Whatever size your company, whichever production Gannomat can and will save time and money. Everyone needs to be more

Tech Doors Continue to Invest with Homag ldham-based Tech Doors have an impressive growth and success record. Managing Director Dennis Ogden started production of bedroom and kitchen cabinet doors in June 2003. His latest investment with Homag UK has been in a Weeke Venture 1M CNC machining centre for enhancing the cabinet and carcase production in terms of quality and capacity. The company started as manufacturers of mitre-framed doors and PVC-edged doors made to any size and quantity. Recently the cabinet and carcase side of the business has experience an upsurge in demand hence the investment in the Weeke that gives Tech Doors significantly increase flexibility and capacity. Tech Doors can now supply carcases to customer specification no matter how high and complex including colour coordinated interiors. With a multi-late tool changer, 18 vertical drills and a grooving unit, the Weeke Venture 1M is an ideal machine for the job with superb engineering and excellent back-up and service from Homag UK and diagnostics from Weeke. Tech Doors have enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Jim Cox of Homag and Homag UK as technical partners. Up until April of 2006 Tech Doors were buying in all their mouldings that surround centre panels on the products however Dennis Ogden was constantly frustrated by the inflexibility of suppliers with regard to colour and pattern matching and, in particular, in introducing new colours. Quality and delivery were also problems regularly encountered. Following intensive discussions and research with leading European foil manufacturers the decision was made to take moulding production in-house. This was a major step for the company both in terms of a steep production learning curve and investment in machinery. But Tech Doors were determined to take production inhouse for reasons of quality and service control. Intensive research and discussions into the machinery supply market including quotes

O

The Weeke Venture 1M machining centre from over 10 different companies, Tech Doors identified a number of key suppliers. Chief among these was Homag UK to supply a Holzma beam saw to strip cut the MDF sheets before they were fed into the moulder. And also a specialised Friz profile wrapping line and foil slitter for cutting foils. A second Brandt single-sided edgebander was also ordered to cope with increasing demand for PVC-edged doors and panels. Homag was identified as one of their key suppliers for a number of reasons: The expert and exceptionally close service and advice they received from Homag are sales manger Jim Cox. Also vital was the level of technical expertise that both Holzma and Friz bring to their respective technical areas and the unparalleled level of engineering and after-sales service on offer from Homag UK. The Holzma beam saw is the best selling saw worldwide and benefits from a number of special and patented engineering features. Among these are the monorail saw carriage guidance system which endures consistent alignment of the main and scoring blades. The accuracy of program fence positioning is via a magnetic contactless encoding system while the special side pressure alignment device ensures dimensional accuracy. Investment in the Friz profile wrapping line is “one of the best investments we’ve made” says Dennis Ogden. The Friz profile wrapping line is the PUM100 machine which will wrap a variety of profiled materials with different surfacing foils and by applying either EVA/PO or PUR hotmelt adhesive. It has a laterally adjustable unwinding stations, an adjustable slot nossle unit, a foil heater and many other quick set-up and adjustable systems. It can handle workpieces from 10-300mm in width and in thicknesses from 690mm. The foil roll diameter can be up to 600mm. and their area wide range of additional optional specifications. Since full production began in January 2007, new doors have been introduced. Apart from mitre-framed doors other moulded components like plinths, cornices etc are produced. Tech Doors are now in a position to produce mouldings to customer specification in any size and quantity. And with the new Weeke, the cabinet side of the business is expanding strongly. Classic Joinery Software For Admin & Production Needs lassic Joinery Software (CJS) has introduced a fully integrated software package combining office functions such as quotations and production functions like cutting lists and CNC programmes. Until now, users of CNC machinery centres have had to buy separate management and production software packages from different suppliers, which were not integrated. CJS has changed all this with the launch of a range of specialist CAD/CAM software that takes care of all administration and production requirements. CJS is the only company to offer a total software solution for all makes of CNC machining centre in the joinery and cabinet industries. Its easy-to-use software has been developed in-house, with no reliance on third parties. The software includes an office management system that allows users to generate and print quotations, summarise material requirements and generate invoices. outing technology provided by AXYZ Automation has proved a decisive factor in the continuing success of commercial interiors specialist Stringer. Based in Greenwich, Southeast London, the company was formed over 20 years ago by its founder and principal designer Dick Stringer and adopted limited status in 1991. Stringer designs and produces both standard and bespoke interior solutions (including office workplace systems, shelving and tables) for multiple retail display and office and studio environments using a variety of wood substrates (predominantly medium-density fibreboard, plywood and birch) in combination with stainless steel and occasionally acrylic. Central to the high quality of the work produced by the company’s woodworking department has been the successive installation of routing machines supplied by AXYZ Automation. The first machine was an AXYZ 4008 router with a processing area of 2,440mm (length) x 1,466mm (width). It is part of the AXYZ 4000 series that is renowned for an ability to handle 8 x 4 sheets and to machine materials up to a thickness of 150mm. According to Dick Stringer, the decision to purchase the first AXYZ router was made on the basis of price, quality and service. And it was due to the high level of service and technical support provided by AXYZ Automation on the initial purchase that Stringer decided to subsequently install the larger AXYZ 4010 machine to meet increased production requirements. This router has a processing area of 3,048mm (length) x 1,524mm (width). Both of the machines installed at Stringer feature AXYZ Automation’s Automatic Tool Change (ATC) facility. Incorporating an eight-position carousel, the ATC facility provides a faster, easier and more convenient way of processing work requiring multiple tooling without operator intervention and by ensuring that the correct tools for a given task are always selected. Both routers are supported with the multi-featured ToolPath software from AXYZ that will connect with a choice of CAD, CAS and CAM systems that can export DXF, HPGL or NC file formats. At Stringer, designs are created in Vectorworks and exported as DXF files. According to Dick Stringer, both routers have performed outstandingly since installation, with only minimal problems under continuous operation. He commented: ‘The AXYZ routers have improved both the quality and productivity of the company’s woodworking department and we rate both machines highly. In combination with our excellent metalworking facilities, we can now offer a total production capability to our many blue chip clients. A typical example is the John Lewis Partnership for which Stringer has for a number of years provided a range of bespoke retail display solutions. Installation of the AXYZ routers has enabled us to provide

an even better service, improved quality of end product, faster turnaround and, of special significance, added more creativity to our design and production capabilities.’ On the service and after-sales technical support provided by AXYZ Automation, Dick Stringer concluded: ‘These have been first class and were a major factor influencing our decision to purchase the second machine.’ This correlates to AXYZ Automation’s policy of not only supplying robust and reliable routing solutions but also underpinning the consequent engineering excellence with comprehensive training packages and unrestricted after-sales technical support.

Dustraction Fits in at Cottage Furniture he Dustraction cyclo filter installation at Taylor Joinery at Leek in Staffordshire was in a semi-rural location where a lot of local attention was focused on the preservation of a clean environment. Now Taylor Joinery has been acquired by neighbour Cottage Furniture, which is in an even more sensitive location at Railway Crossing in nearby Stone, beside a beautiful canal with lots of tourist traffic and narrow boats by the tow path. As pretty and sensitive as the new location is, space - or the lack of it - was another of the problems facing the Dustraction team when they relocated their Dustrax 3X4 cyclo filter to a space barely bigger than the cyclo itself and rejigged the ductwork to accommodate no less than 16 joinery production machines. However, an advantage of the limited installation space, according to Dustraction’s Steve Matuska, is that noise from the Dustrax No. 40 37kW fanset is reduced by the close proximity of the two buildings. Cottage Furniture Ltd. imports and manufactures contemporary pieces for the pub, restaurant, hotel and hospitality sector as well as being an established manufacturer of seating and cabinet furniture for the contract sector. There are still items of furniture that can be made better and cheaper here to meet specific needs that imports don’t readily address, according to Purchasing Manager Derek Berger. And as he also points out: “Space is at a premium at this location. The new Dustrax cyclo filter and wood waste incinerator have been shoe-horned into a very narrow space between us and the building alongside so the Dustraction team had their work cut out. We won a low interest loan from The Carbon Trust for this project so in meeting their needs and those of local planners, Dustraction did a fantastic job in difficult circumstances.” Up to 95% of waste is cyclonically separated before reaching the tubular sleeve filter media on which the remaining fine dust cakes on the polyester felt and is dislodged by reverse pulse jets of compressed air. The installation also includes a Votecs EZ6/1 chipper unit by PRW with a load capacity of two cubic metres and with a hydraulic ram feed system to take heavyweight waste material for silo storage and incineration for factory heating purposes. Dustraction worked alongside Wood Waste Technology on the installation of their new wood burner to ensure a reliable supply of ducted waste to an on-site storage silo and feed system. Dustraction’s cyclone extraction and feed system is virtually free of moving parts and therefore requires almost no maintenance - it’s guaranteed for three years or for 6,000 hours continuous use and the heated, filtered air is returned direct to the new factory building in the form of heating as needed. Says Derek Berger: ”Dustraction helped us to make the very best of the resources we had available to us over the course of our move. Making effective use of the technology and containing the costs required a degree of flexibility from the supplier that was crucial and helped to make this transition a great deal easier than it might otherwise have been”.

Prospects Not So Dusty at Axiom Joinery xiom Joinery in Leicester has just been obliged to move at fairly short notice to a bigger factory in order to fulfil the volume of orders coming in from design agencies servicing the retail sector. It might be quiet in the high street, but Dominic Taylor at Axiom says that all the big retail names are spending money on their counters, displays and point of sale systems. The move took place over a weekend in order to minimise disruption on the shop floor and Dustraction won the contract to move the extraction system serving a dozen wood and panel machines at the old factory - only a few miles distant - and to upgrade the filter. The order specified a weekend working changeover and Dominic reports that the Dustraction team was ‘fantastic’. “Dustraction came in first with the hardware on the Friday afternoon, installed all the ductwork and linked the connections across during the Saturday and early part of the Sunday of the move. In fact, they were all done by midday on the Sunday and we all got home for Sunday lunch which, if you’d told me beforehand, I wouldn’t have believed possible,” says Dominic. The new filter is a Dustrax No. 27 BB Series unit and is of modular bolted construction to allow for ongoing increases in the size of the extraction plant to raise its capacity to accommodate new wood and panel machinery that Dominic Taylor has planned for 2008/09. Part of this will be sophisticated new technology to reduce the carbon footprint of Axiom Joinery on the Earl Shilton industrial estate to which they’ve moved. The Dustrax 27 filters wood waste via the tubular felt sock-type system which features an automatic shaker to dislodge build-ups of caked waste. Waste is transferred from the filter to an enclosed bagging hopper by a floor-mounted fanset to a series of five heavyduty, high capacity plastic waste sacks retained on spigot mounts with quick-release, toggle actioned sealing bands for quick, easy disposal. The new factory, with a workforce of around 20, will generate about 30 cu. mtrs of wood dust and chip waste weekly, in Dominic Taylor’s estimation, and he expects that figure to rise sharply in line with the order book. The enclosed bagging base of the filter enclosure is fitted with hinged doors for easy access and sight glasses for a visual indication of bag capacity remaining. The plant is also equipped with a fully sequenced control panel. Dominic Taylor says he feel ‘very confident’ in the Dustraction system to deliver an efficient and safe way to maintain a clean and efficient shop floor. And that’s important to him, he says: “I’ve got the fullest order book we’ve had in the three years of the company’s

A

life to the year end so I want to be completely confident in all aspects of shop floor operation. “Wood waste is something I don’t ever want to have to think about - that’s Dustraction’s job. And I have no doubt, from what I’ve seen so far, that they will do it - and do it well.”

Kundig at W8 eading sanding specialist, Kundig, will be showing a comprehensive cross-section of state-of-the-art machinery which will be of considerable interest to all small, medium and large-sized companies operating in the woodworking, joinery and furniture production industries. The Swiss company specializes solely in the development and manufacture of both wide-belt and edge sanders and sanding has always been Kundig’s single area of total commitment. Annual production exceeds 400 machines each year and the company enjoys a major share of the Swiss home market. In addition, Kundig has been particularly successful in many overseas markets including the UK and Ireland, the USA, Germany, France and Italy. Kundig’s wide-belt sanders are constant-level machines whereby additional support can be provided to the infeed and outfeed of the machine. This, in turn, ensures that even workpieces of differing thicknesses can be positively supported. This is particularly advantageous and ensures considerably increased accuracy over ‘moving bed’ machines where material can often tilt into the abrasive. Furthermore, being a constant-level machine, the Kundig widebelt sander can be easily integrated into a flowline production facility, thereby obviating the need for more than one operator. Kundig’s most recent wide-belt innovation is the patented oblique sanding technique where sanding is carried out in the ‘shear plain’. It has been proven in countless cutting applications that a far superior finish can be achieved when there is a ‘shear’ angle to the cut as opposed to the traditional full-on 90 deg. ‘attack’ angle. Kundig now produces a range of oblique sanding machines which are totally flexible and which can be used for a variety of applications including the calibration of solid wood and sanding of veneers. These machines facilitate an excellent finish when used for the preparation and sanding of lacquered surfaces. They are ideal for any company desiring to achieve a totally flawless finish.

L

Typical Kundig wide-belt sander installation At W8 Kundig will exhibit three wide-belt sanding machines:- the Premium-2 1100 RP, with roller and pad and which is especially suitable for calibrating solid wood and panels, finishing of solid wood and veneers and lacquer sanding; the Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L, which features oblique sanding with a pivotable combi head with contact roller in the first position and a straight electronic segmented pad in the second position, and which is ideal for lacquer sanding; the Brilliant-X 1350 Cd-L, a cross-belt oblique sander with roller and pad which is entirely suitable for both veneer and lacquer sanding. With Kundig’s wide-belt sander range, the use of the company’s ‘Enormatic’ automatic self-setting mode is of particular interest. When the workpiece is presented into the infeed, the machine then registers the thickness of the workpiece across the width of the machine and automatically sets the heads to a pre-determined depth of cut. This is most useful when processing large panels or frames as the feed conveyor automatically starts to take the workpiece through. This obviates the problem of ‘balancing’ the workpiece whilst endeavouring to reach the control panel. Many users have proclaimed that the Kundig wide-belt sander ensures guaranteed accuracy and is probably the easiest and quickest machine to set. Kundig’s popular, operator-friendly series of edge sanders will be well represented at W8. These rugged and reliable machines are competitively-priced and include:- the BASIQ sander, a single-sided, multi-functional machine which, within seconds, can be switched from sanding solid wood to veneered wood, from straight to beveled edges and from manual to throughfeed work; the UNIQ sander which features two heavy cast worktables on either side of the machine which facilitate both solid wood and veneer sanding; the UNIQ-S sander with integrated feed belt system for throughfeed sanding of both small and large workpieces.

and narrow aisle forklift, and operate inside and out, on semi rough terrain and in all weather conditions. Sideways travel with extreme loads allows aisle widths to be cut to 2m, enabling vast space savings to be made on available storage space. Low level transportation of long lengths also avoids risky high level manoeuvres for improved health and safety procedures. Combilift celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and from the outset the company has had close links with the timber sector. Customer feedback from the industry has influenced the development of the model range, and the 5t capacity C5000XL on the stand exemplifies this: a larger cab, higher ground clearance, extra heavy duty tyres and a host of other features such as a timber box and chainsaw storage have made this a firm favourite in sawmills and timber yards around the globe. Combilifts are available as LPG, diesel or electric models. A choice of mast height and chassis length as well as a range of attachments ensures that each Combilift is tailor made to individual customer requirements.

The machine bed has a single upright fitted with THK slideways for the blade carriage. The pusher and pressure units have also been redesigned to ensure smooth movements, precision positioning and optimised sawdust extraction. The PC–PLC control system and control interface have been designed to make life easier for the operator. Compact and ergonomic, the new SCM WINDOR 1, the latest CNC Machining Centre for window frame and door manufacturing, is completely enclosed in order to reduce noise to a minimum and ensure complete safe conditions for the operator. The new WINDOR 1 executes mitred tenons with twin or single angle mitre by interpolation. Overall dimensions are greatly reduced because the tenoning reference guide does not have to be inclined. Tenoning becomes semi-automatic with no manual positioning of the work piece for the processing of the second side is necessary because the clamping is through a central presser with electronic positioning, enabling the clamping of one or two work pieces at the same time depending upon their length. Thanks to the rotary movement of the presser, it is possible to process, in sequence, the two sides of the work piece in an extremely easy and fast way. WINDOR 1 is fitted with an end-cutting unit and one tenoning unit to process work pieces with a length between 220 and 2800 mm. For profiling, the machine is supplied with two 50 x 320 mm high precision spindles with 5-position pneumatic horizontal adjustment, and with the new duo working unit with 0-90° two position pneumatic angular rotation for glazing bead recovery in the horizontal position and hardware grooving in the vertical position. a supervisor developed by SCM, for the complete control of the machine and programmable systems with continuous electronic axes. The new Accord CNC machining centre, with new technology and a mobile portal structure complete with automatic loading and unloading systems is highly compact, and ideal for Nesting, but can also be used for flexible generic production. ACCORD brings all of these advantages and more, thanks to a set of technical features such as the exclusive SCM aluminium multipurpose worktable, with a standard worktable measuring 3650x1560 mm and optional extended worktable measuring 4250x2280 mm but taking minimal floor space, and with large vacuum channels to guarantee work piece hold-down by constant suction in all zones. The high level vacuum can secure both small work pieces and overlapping panels. Suitable for machining panels made of wood, MDF, plastics, resins and light alloys. The machining head consists of an 8.5 kW Routing Unit served by a ten-station tool magazine and it can hold an additional boring unit. The electro-spindle is available with various options (set up for angle drive heads, Vector ‘C’ axis, etc.) and may be fitted with the Rapid 8, eight-station tool magazine anchored to the mobile crosspiece, for an even faster tool change-over. The machine has an industrial numeric control and Office PC and dialogues using the Xilog Plus operator interface. The operator can manage the setting-up procedure with the mobile control panel. TI155 CLASS and TI 155 EP CLASS are the latest spindle moulder models of the new Class range manufactured by SCM, and are the only existing spindle moulders equipped with an SCM patented electro-spindle, a result of 4 years of research. The main feature of TI155 CLASS and TI 155 EP CLASS is the drive unit consisting of an electro-spindle specifically designed for all possible spindle moulder applications. Electro-spindle motor power of either 7.5kW or 10kW, tilting from -45,50° up to +45,50 and electronic tool speed control from 900 to 12.000 rpm, with the maximum power available from 3.400 rpm. All these features assure superior surface finishing and more freedom to process customised parts. The electro-spindle is made of top performance materials such

as spheroidal cast iron and light alloys, and high quality components like high performance bearings assuring maximum rigidity during machining. Therefore a total absence of vibration and improved surface finishing is guaranteed. Use of the electro-spindle means that drive belts are dispensed with and this allows significant reduction of maintenance times. TI 155 EP CLASS is available with two electro-spindle cooling systems, liquid cooling for 10 kW (13.5 HP) tool spindle motor power, or with forced air circuit, by exploiting the exhaust system, for 7.5 kW (10HP) motors. This is an SCM patented system. The TI155 CLASS is equipped with two front manual hand wheels for tilting and rising of the tool. Moreover, the TI 155 EP CLASS is equipped with “Easy” electronic controller for up to 6 axes, which assures time saving in machine set-up, as well as operator’s safety and ease of use.

Jet Press Gets Set to Impress at W8 oodworkers and furniture makers fed up with laboriously hammering in t-Nuts by hand are being invited to visit Jet Press’s stand at W8 to get their hands on the newest –and safest – hand-held insertion gun on the market. The furniture components supplier, based in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, is the only supplier of the new t-Nut handtool in the UK. It is using the show to launch the product and is holding regular sessions to demonstrate its capabilities. T-Nuts, which are widely used in the construction of beds, sofas and chairs, are commonly tapped into place with a hammer, but the tool will significantly speed up the process without breaking the bank. Inserting t-Nuts is a repetitive task which requires a high degree of accuracy, speed and stability, and all these factors have been taken into account in the handtool’s design. It makes locating the hole in the working piece easy and offers efficient, precise and deeper insertion, resulting in maximum push-out resistance. The tool, which is powered by compressed air, is fast and simple to reload – the t-Nuts are mounted on strips and fed into a magazine – and, most importantly, it is safe. Unlike previous hand-held models, it has a safety feature whereby the nuts cannot be released without the tool being engaged in the hole. Jet Press also offers a range of t-Nuts which are specially designed to be used with the tool and are available in varying thread and barrel sizes. Ben Newman, sales manager at Jet Press, said: “T-Nuts are used widely across the furniture and woodworking industries, yet, unless

W

companies invest in an expensive machine, they are very labourintensive to insert. “We believe that our t-Nut handtool offers the best balance yet between efficiency, economy and safety. Blum Products for “Inclusive Design” eading international furniture fittings manufacturer Blum have put considerable effort and research into developing products for kitchen users who may experience physical restrictions. Blum’s core product development has centred on ergonomics, ease of access and perfecting motion. In an effort to understand the difficulties that older kitchen users may experience, Blum developed a special suit called the “Age Explorer” which simulates typical physical limitations. The Age Explorer uses weights, goggles and ear defenders to restrict muscle use, eyesight and hearing. Special gloves simulate arthritic conditions in fingers and joints and internal weights limit normal muscular use like stretching, bending, reaching and pulling. 1) Bindings limit the motion of elbows and knees. 2) Special topstitches in the suit make it difficult to straighten the arms. 3) Weights that are attached directly to the arm and leg musculature simulate decreasing muscle strength. 4) Special gloves imitate arthritis and make it difficult to grasp and feel objects. 5) Glasses limit the eyesight. 6) Headphones mimic hearing limitations. 7) The yellow-coloured visor limits the field of vision and simulates the clouding and yellowing/colouring of the eye lens. Using the Age Explorer as a research tool Blum have realised the benefits to users of full-extension drawers and pull-outs – especially in base units where fixed shelves have to be replaced as they are

severely restricting. They also recognised the usefulness of special units like the SPACE CORNER instead of the conventional carousel in a corner unit and the benefits of proper internal organisation based around their ORGA-LINE system. More recently and critically the introduction of SERVO-DRIVE has shown enormous benefits. SERVO-DRIVE is an aid to allow the automatic opening of base unit drawers by pressure on the drawer front or just the slightest of pulls on the handle. Finally the importance of BLUMOTION soft close cannot be over estimated for this inclusive design sector.

ellissimo furniture has added curved and bespoke options to Saturn – the UK’s biggest range of vinyl doors and drawer fronts for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms.

B

The Saturn range comprises 40 colours and effects in total, including solid colours and woodgrains in matt and gloss. Bellissimo has been able to supply curved solid wood doors for some time now, but the curved option in vinyl opens up tremendous design potential to a much wider market. Equally, the availability of made-to-measure fascias across the Saturn range gives retailers the flexibility to meet customer requirements exactly, rather than having to work around standard sizes. Managing director Warnock Watson said: “When you add these two options to what is already the widest range of doors and drawer fronts available in the UK, you have a formidable package. Retailers which have the ability to offer this sort of choice will find themselves at a major advantage.”

Touch Release from Häfele he simple lines and uncluttered look of today’s iconic modernism needs no further embellishment. Or so says Accuride, whose design people have even done away with the need for handles or knobs as a means for opening drawers. Joining Häfele’s cabinet furniture fittings and components range for 2008 is Accuride’s new Touch Release mechanism with full extension telescopic slides supporting both drawers and roll-out shelf systems. Touch Release products feature a disconnect lever for easy assembly or dismounting of drawers and shelves together with the Northampton company’s signature cam adjustment for easy and perfect alignment of drawer front panels in all directions. Touch Release mechanisms come in standard domestic furniture grade and in a Heavy Duty format for business and commercial applications. Accuride emphasise Touch & Release is based on full extension telescopic suitability of the product for portable cabinets slides for both of drawers and roll-out shelf systems.

or equipment and also for medical or educational environments. In addition to the clean and simple visual aesthetic of Touch Release drawer systems, which require only a light push and release to open, they also have a more practical role to play for people who have difficulty grasping knobs and fittings. Touch Release also eliminates the ‘bump and snag’ hazard and contributes towards cleaner lines in living or working environments. Both the domestic and commercial versions of Touch Release come in nine even lengths from 300 to 700mm and a choice of three finish options: black, white and clear zinc. Blum Amongst Top Patent Applicants ittings manufacturer ranked amongst top five Austrian companies in terms of patent applications in 2007 Every year, “Statistik Austria” ranks Austrian companies according to the number of patent applications they file. Blum has always ranked amongst the top companies in the past few years, and this remained the case in 2007. The fittings manufacturer from Vorarlberg (western Austria) applied for 24 patents last year, putting it fifth behind other large and renowned companies. To date, more than one thousand patents have been granted to Blum. Blum first files for patents on new developments in Austria. After a year at most, the company has to decide whether to extend patent protection to include other countries. Appropriate and consistent investments are made in research and development so the company can meet the demands it makes of itself as world leader in the field of fittings and maintain its market position in the long term.
